Major fix needed for art and heritage centre By Sue NewmaN

Ratepayers are about to fork out $65,000 to pay for a detailed design on remedial work that’s required to fix a range of issues with Ashburton’s art gallery and heritage centre. And that could just be the first step in what could become a very expensive fix of a building that has been plagued by performance issues since it opened. The hefty bill to fix the building will come on top of a $3 million blow-out on its build cost. The Ashburton District Council has already spent a considerable amount of money on a long investigation into what were some quite complex issues with the building, council business support manager Paul Brake said. He presented a report on the building’s problems and a plan for a way forward to councillors at Thursday’s council finance and business support committee meeting. “We relied on expert advice with this building and it seems we’ve been let down. We need to ensure this building can deliver what we need it to deliver. It’s not the site, it’s technical design issues and water ingress,” he

said. There had been many occasions when water had made its way into the building, but the locations varied and the ingress occasions were irregular. In addition the air conditioning/heating system was not meeting expectation and there were concerns regarding design and construction quality issues, Brake said. “The efforts staff have made in mitigating problems in this building to keep exhibitions and collections safe have been time consuming and have incurred additional costs.” The issues divided into three groups – technical and design that resulted in condensation dripping down inside walls, water ingress and finishing where water entered the building

through the roof, through external concrete wall panels and some bay windows and mechanical where the air conditioning plant is not performing as it should. With so many problems that would clearly be complex and expensive to fix, councillor Stuart Wilson asked whether a demolition of the building had been considered. It hadn’t, Brake said. “We’ve looked at the problems and at remediation but not at demolition. At a high level it doesn’t make economic sense to abandon and rebuild. We need to firm up what is needed and what the costs will be,” he said. The preferred option to make the building fit for purpose was a full re-

mediation that could include full over cladding of the building, remediation of three bay windows, the installation of an additional roofing structure over the existing roofing in the museum storage area, the installation of buffer tanks and rerouting of the existing mechanical services and pipework. If all of that was done, Brake said, known issues would be dealt with and the building would not only be able to meet operating specifications, it would also have a longer life. “It’s a matter of coming up with a realistic way of mitigating these problems.” The council will now commission a consultant to carry out detailed remedial design work and when this is completed the council will have a better understanding of the scale of the work required and the likely cost, Brake said. The council believes many of the issues should be remedied by the relative parties responsible for the design and/or construction work and proceedings have been issued by the council against those parties. These are before the High Court and therefore the council was limited in the comments it could make.

financial budgets and reporting of this project. An independent report was commissioned from Morrison Low on procurement, planning and construction processes. This was made public in December 2014. It included a number of recommendations that have since been implemented on other council projects. A number of building performance issues became evident once the building was fully occupied. The council started investigations into these but it quickly became apparent the nature and complexity of the is-

sues required expert advice. Prendos New Zealand was commissioned in early 2017 to undertake a full investigation of all issues identified to date. Their preliminary report was received by the council in June that year. Further investigations identified a number of additional issues and Prendos has now completed its final report with recommended remedial actions. Running alongside the Prendos report, Powell Fenwick, consultant engineers were commissioned this year to undertake a peer review of the air conditioning and heating system.

This report was received in August. It identified that the current system could not deliver the agreed and contracted temperature and humidity specifications. A critical need for buffer tanks was confirmed and while they were in the original design they were deleted to save costs. These will now be installed but the load bearing capacity of the timber bearers in the roof will need to be assessed first. Six buffer tanks have been ordered and are expected to arrive in late January.

Art gallery, heritage building flawed from its inception W

hat you see on the surface does not always tell the true story of what lies beneath and that’s never more true than in the saga of Ashburton’s art gallery and heritage centre. On the surface the building is a success. It houses art that inspires and challenges and is home to a pretty amazing collection of items, artefacts and collections that tell the story of our district from its first settlers to today. That’s on the surface. The building itself, however, is flawed and has been mired in controversy from the moment the first draft plans were drawn up. Initially there was huge community anger over its site. Many wanted the two users to remain in their then home, the former county council building in Baring Square east – revamped and redesigned. As many didn’t want any rates money to be spent on improving the lot of the district’s art and history. And some were keen for the current West Street site. There were protest rallies, petitions, huge community discontent, but the council of the day held firm. The district would have a new gallery and heritage centre and it would be built on West Street. End of story. The story, however, did not end there. The build process was dogged by arguments with neighbours, Environment Court hearings, stalled work, plan revisions, cost cutting and a growing disquiet over the actual building’s design.

The architects, it seemed were not specialists in that field, they were at best generalists. And that choice of architect may lie at the heart of today’s problems – a building that fails to perform as it should. Decisions made perhaps for expediency, perhaps with the best of intentions five years ago are now coming back to bite ratepayers, and to bite them hard. The building cost $3 million more to build than the original quote and hundreds of thousands of dollars have already been spent trying to fix on-going performance issues. Today’s council team have been left to mop up the mess. They’re looking at a building that’s failing at every turn but they’re determined to come up with a fix that’ll last well into the future. The path they’re walking could become an expensive minefield for ratepayers, but full marks to the council team, they’re baying, if not for blood, then at least for compensation. Court proceedings have been initiated against several of the companies involved. How that will play out is anyone’s guess, on the surface it would seem someone will be paying to fix this building and it won’t be us, the ratepayers.

hecking stoat traps along the Mt Hutt access road is a satisfying job for ski area fleet mechanic Rob Teasdale. He is among a team of employees at the skifield who are passionate about wiping out as many of the pests as possible, along with possums and rats. Extracting yet another large mustelid from a box trap, he is thankful for the number of humane kills to date – about 50 since Mt Hutt’s trapping programme began about six weeks ago. It is a programme reaping death and destruction upon populations of small and furry creatures, introduced by humans many years ago. And it is all for a good cause, to save the rare and enigmatic kea. Named after the call it makes as it flies through mountain valleys and soars above snowy peaks, the kea is the world’s only mountain parrot and it exists solely in the South Island. That call was regularly heard at Mt Hutt every year, until this season when the skifield fell eerily silent. Just about every Mt Hutt visitor had previously come to see the birds as regular residents, admiring both their beauty and

charismatic nature. Their predominantly olive green and black plumage is highlighted by a striking red, orange and yellow on the underwings, commonly viewed as the parrots ambled about the carpark and base building, eyeing up lunchboxes and launching themselves onto shiny new vehicles. There was the odd sighting of keas at Mt Hutt during the 2018 ski season, representing a reduction from last year when there were about three regulars on site most days. This represented a drop from previous years, when there could be up to 20 of the birds getting up to their usual tricks in the carpark and base building area. The reduced numbers are a sad indictment on just how troubled the species has become. It is estimated that less than 5000 remain in the wild. They were once seen as a pest, and rogue birds have been known to attack sheep. Populations fell following more than 150,000 being culled up until the 1970s in a government bounty scheme. Not content to sit by and watch the decline continue, NZSki has launched itself onto the scene like an environmental superhero,

Keas can be real clowns and have kept many a human entranced determined to bring back higher numbers of the nationally threatened bird which has provided staff and visitors alike with endless entertainment. In October the NZSki fields of Mt Hutt, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak announced they would collectively spend more than $250,000 on kea conservation initiatives over the next five years. At Mt Hutt the intrepid team is Teasdale, alongside patrol head of department Mike Ward, snow safety officer John Hooker and sales and marketing co-ordinator Richie Owen. On their kea-duty days they are negotiating mountainous terrain to clear out and rebait the wooden box snap traps along the access road from the information booth upwards, and monitoring automatic resetting traps throughout the steep valley beneath Mt Hutt. All in all there are about 60 traps in operation, including about 25 automatic resetting traps, which kill immediately by piercing through the head of prey. Mt Hutt manager James McKenzie is hoping to be able to double

the number of automatic traps, and hopes Mid Cantabrians will come to the party in a new trapsponsoring fundraising initiative. Trapping locations have been chosen after seeking advice from the Department of Conservation, as these areas are most likely to have been used by keas as nesting spots in the past. The birds nest

have been spotted around the sub-alpine area, suggesting at least some were breeding there. McKenzie is among Mt Hutt staff who would love to have the keas return. He has seen them wreak all sorts of havoc at the skifeld over the years, mainly due to their penchant for slicing up anything which takes their fancy with their large hooked beaks. In 2014 while a pump was being installed into a well at the skifield, a flock descended upon the area and attacked its temperature probe cable, holding up work for about half an hour. They have also stopped the triple chair lift by chewing into cables, and regularly wreck new snow mobile seats and snow groomer accessories. Demolishing rubber seals on skiers’ cars is one of their favourite activities, generally choosing the most modern and luxurious-looking varieties. “We are really only the ultimate custodian of the land that we operate on,” McKenzie said. “So we need to take some responsibility. I think increasing awareness around our pest problem is definitely important. And most of our staff are very passionate about the environment they work in. It’s a pretty special area, so it’s awesome to be able to do something and give back.”

Trainees’ achievements recognised Forty-one Industry Training graduates have been recognised for their achievements at a graduation ceremony hosted by the Ashburton District Council earlier this week. Industry training graduates study while working and are supported in improving existing work skills or gaining new skills by employers, sponsors and industry training advisors. The ceremony, held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Monday recognised the new graduates’ positive contributions they make to many local organisations, said mayor Donna Favel. The council has hosted these awards since 2015. The Industry Training work/ study scheme is made available through the New Zealand Industry Training Organisation, the Mayor’s Task Force for Jobs Initiative, and the Ashburton District Council.

The study topics available range from construction to agribusiness management, hairdressing, water reticulation, wool harvest-

Christmas in the Ashburton District is about more than lights and Christmas trees this year, it’s also about entertainment. As part of the Ashburton District Council’s new Nights of Lights festival, two buskers’ nights will be held starring local entertainers. The two music under the stars events will provide an opportunity for people to roll out the picnic rug, unpack their food and sit back in Baring Square to take a brief break from the Christmas rush, says council events co-ordinator Verity Jackson. Caleb Livingstone and Michael Baker will share the MC role each night of the Baring Square east event. “This is a great chance for local entertainers to showcase themselves,” Jackson said. The first buskers’ night will feature Erin Connelly-Wright, Liam Pram and Teague Kruger who will each perform 45 minute sets. The second night will star Ni-

kita Hyde and Teague Kruger and will introduce festival-goers to Frisbee golf, led by Ashburton Youth Council member Malakai Swindley. The Ashburton Guardiansponsored events will be held on December 7 and December 21 and will run from 6.30pm until 10pm. The two buskers’ nights are part of what will be a full Friday festive programme for Ashburton in the lead-in to Christmas. Last night the town’s giant Christmas tree in Baring Square was lit and in addition to the two Friday buskers’ nights, there will be a special event for families on December 14 with an outdoor screening of the family movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This will screen in Baring Square east and families are encouraged to bring their chairs, picnic blankets and food and settle in for the evening. There will be some food stalls on hand and there will also be a competition for the children wearing the best Grinch-themed outfits.

Mid Canterbury residents and visitors will have the chance to view a quality range of artwork as Christmas time approaches. The Ashburton Society of Arts are hosting their Christmas Show, with the exhibition opening to-

morrow at their Short Street Studio. The exhibition features 14 local artists, as well as guest artist Barbara Nutsford, who is from Leeston and has been painting for 14 years. Nutsford said she has exhibited in the society’s main exhibition

at the Ashburton Art Gallery, but never at the Short Street Studio. The show will be open from 10am to 3pm, and is open for two weeks, closing on December 16. Convenor Ngaio McKee said it will be exciting to see what people bring in, and that she expects there to be a big range of pieces.

I lied to Congress: Cohen President Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, confessed in a surprise guilty plea yesterday that he lied to Congress about a Moscow real estate deal he pursued on Trump’s behalf during the heat of the 2016 Republican campaign. He said he lied to be consistent with Trump’s “political messaging.” The plea agreement made clear that prosecutors believe that while Trump insisted repeatedly throughout the campaign that he had no business dealings in Russia, his lawyer was continuing to pursue the Trump Tower Moscow project weeks after his boss had clinched the Republican nomination for president and well beyond the point that had been previously acknowledged. Cohen said he discussed the proposal with Trump on multiple occasions and with members of the president’s family, according to documents filed by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the presidential election and possible co-ordination with the Trump campaign. Cohen acknowledged considering travelling to Moscow to discuss the project. There is no clear link in the court filings between Cohen’s lies and Mueller’s central ques-

Still, the case underscores how Trump’s business entity, the Trump Organization, was negotiating business in Moscow at the same time investigators believe Russians were

Horror Queensland bushfire crisis rages on There is no end in sight to the bushfire crisis in Queensland, with severe heatwave conditions forecast to spread across the state. Thousands of people have been forced from their homes as firefighters battle up to 140 wildfires during the unprecedented seven-day emergency. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll says crews have been confronted with high temperatures and “unimaginable” conditions. “(But) due to all the proactive work conducted over the

last several days, we have lost a minimal amount of houses, thankfully,” she told reporters. Two houses, two cabins and 15 sheds have been destroyed, with a further 14 homes damaged, since the crisis began on Saturday. “This number could have easily been greater,” she said. Ms Carroll says the extreme temperatures have also taken down 15 firefighters with heat stress, with more hot days forecast. Three blazes of significance continued to burn at Tinnanbar, south of Hervey Bay,

Deepwater and North Stradbroke Island. The small isolated community of Tinnanbar was cut off by bushfire and told to seek shelter as fire bombers and more than 20 fire crews fought the blaze. Six other towns were ordered to pack up their valuables and evacuate as fires continue to rage in central Queensland. In the state’s south, a blaze on the eastern side of North Stradbroke Island threatened campers and powerlines. The Bureau of Meteorol-

hristchurch lawyer James Rapley didn’t need a map of the crime scene when he defended a young Ashburton man charged with murdering his brother by stabbing him. The McDonald Street house that was the scene of a violent confrontation was just around the corner from where Rapley grew up. Times were different back then. He says he was lucky to grow up in a normal, hard-working, middleclass family where education was encouraged. Rapley, who grew up in Porter Street, went on to develop a love for history and became a prominent lawyer. He was this week appointed a Queen’s Counsel, status reserved for barristers who excel in their profession. He went to Hampstead School, Ashburton Intermediate and on to Ashburton College from 198084. In his final year of secondary school, he went on an American Field Scholarship (AFS) and spent 12 months in America. “Back then, there was no McDonald’s, and no internet so it was a big thing. I loved it.” He came back to Ashburton, worked for six months at RX Plastics to save up some money, then headed to the University of Canterbury.

Naughty “I loved my time at Ashburton College. It was a very formative time for me. It was a great school.” He has fond memories of the college, even if his third form (Year 9) reports suggested the young Rapley was a bit naughty in class, “distracting and could do better”, teachers told parents Jackie and Richard. History teacher Brian Edmondston was able to turn that around by realising he had a love of history and needed some direction. “Thanks to him, and mum and dad, who said the power of learning and the need for higher education could be channelled in a subject I love … the Roman Empire and the Middle East. “And so I made up my mind to buck my ideas up a bit and ensure I started to do better and achieve, which I did and made my way to uni … and once I was there, a whole new world opened up. “I never intended to be a lawyer. I was going to be a doctor and I was very lucky. We came from a very normal, hardworking middleclass family. Mum and dad always encouraged us to try and do well and emphasised the benefit of school and education. So a doctor was where I was going to go, but I hadn’t done physics and I needed that for first year health sciences.” So Rapley followed his high school love of history and enrolled at UC. “I took history and political science and law as a filler. It turned out I loved law and enjoyed the history that comes with law, and really enjoyed the debating and arguing that is part of the discipline.” The rest is, well, history. Rapley graduated from Canterbury with a law degree in 1989 and was admitted to the bar the following year. He worked for several Auckland law firms and got his masters before joining the Serious Fraud Office as a prosecutor. He worked overseas and then returned to Christchurch, where he now practises from Bridgeside chambers specialising in criminal litigation.

Students When he’s not working for clients, Rapley teaches law at the University of Canterbury. For 15 years, he has been teaching students courtroom skills, like how to cross-examine and how to open and close a case at trial. There is stiff competition for jobs among law graduates, he says. He advises them to develop skills that help them stand out

from the crowd, be it a double degree, high marks, charity work, or sporting achievement. “I tell them just because you have an LLB it does not make you special. Everyone who is applying for that job has one of those. What else have you got?” He also tells them to have a plan. If they want to work in the country, think resource management; in the city, then commercial law. And have more than one law string to your bow. Criminal law is the most exciting arm of the profession though. But it is a tough road and can be all-consuming. Rapley has rep-

resented murderers, rapists and other serious offenders. “You can walk in some pretty dark shadows,” he says. Rapley was appointed amicus curia (friend of the court) to assist Ashburton Winz killer Russell John Tully, who refused to co-operate with his appointed defence counsel. He also represented Bronson Kelekolio who admitted the 2012 murder of Ashburton mother Sino Solomona, and Jayden Alexander, who was found guilty of killing his brother with a single stab to the chest at the McDonald Street house in 2016. He was also defence counsel for Kooly Te Tomo, found guilty of the manslaughter of Arran Gairns, whose body was found in a ditch off West Street in 2014 after a drug deal went bad. Rapley is appealing the conviction and a decision is expected by the Court of Appeal soon. “It is rewarding, but some cases are really upsetting and distressing.” He is sometimes asked how he can defend people others see as unpleasant and despicable. “It is part of the obligation as a barrister. There is a rule, the cab rank rule, that you have to accept a brief if it is in your area. It is a historical rule and one of the foundations of our justice system.” Rapley works with his wife Tuula; they share the dark moments and make sure they have healthy interests, including their children, outside the profession to keep them sane. “Most of my clients though are just normal people who have got themselves into bother. People who get into situations and need some help. They might have committed a crime, or not, but all of a sudden are facing the judicial system where they are on trial, with serious consequences. “That is where it can be really rewarding. You help them through it and get a great result if it turns out there are some problems with the evidence or witnesses are lying or not involved at all.”

is still a noble profession. “We are very fortunate in New Zealand. We are a small country and people know each other. We are a nation of people who care and do the right thing in most instances, and the legal profession is the same.” He says one of the biggest challenges facing the profession is the fact that many people can’t obtain the services of a lawyer for their court case … these “working poor” who don’t quality for legal aid end up representing themselves. “It is an issue of real concern to the New Zealand Bar Association.” He says he knows of many barristers and advocates doing pro bono work or working for reduced rates.

Maori Rapley is also concerned about the over-representation of Maori in the justice system. Maori make up 15 per cent of the population, but 50 per cent of the prison population. He believes more lawyers should call for cultural reports that have been legally allowed since the 1980s but rarely used. He called for the specialist report when representing Alexander. It was powerful and helped the sentencing judge understand how influences and events in the young man’s life had shaped his destiny. Alexander, 25 at the time, had no connection to his Maori identity after being placed in foster care with Pakeha families since the age of 18 months. Filling the cultural void would be life-changing. “There is so much more that can be obtained than a report provided by a probation officer.” But the questions going forward around cultural reports will be who pays and who is qualified to write them. The responsibilities of his new Queen’s Counsel title are beginning to sink in. “I am proud. It is a massive professional accolade of my abilities, skills and standing as an advocate and barrister.” The appointment process is intense, with input from the Attorney General, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, the Solicitor General, president of the Court of Appeal, the chief High Court judge and president of the New Zealand Law Society and Bar Association. While it recognises Rapley’s excellence, it also carries with it a special responsibility for leadership and giving back to the profession, especially helping younger lawyers. “It is a real privilege and very special honour.”

Government spend up The New Zealand government spent more than expected in the first four months of the financial year and posted a small deficit in the period. Treasury reported an operating deficit of $258 million before gains and losses in the four months ended October 31, compared to a deficit of $308 million a year earlier. The council can’t afford to fund that and meet its environmental obligations and has proposed selling up to 45 per cent of the business through a share offer in order to free up capital and diversify the council’s investment base. If the sale proceeds it will be the first new opportunity public investors will have had to buy shares in a port company since Christchurch City Council delisted Lyttelton in November 2014. The regional council will next week hear oral submissions on the proposal and alternative options to fund the port’s expansion from loans and rates, leasing it to a long-term operator, or selling

half the business to an operating partner. Almost 3500 groups and individuals submitted on the plan with about 57 per cent backing the proposed share sale. Ngati Pahauwera manages more than $13 million of investments, alongside the 15,500-hectare Mohaka forest, which it leases to Pan Pacific Forest Products. It also manages about 3500ha of farm land, according to its website. If a share sale proceeds, the regional council favours some sort of preferential offer to ratepayers and port employees. The option for iwi investment has previously been raised with the senior staff at the council, which would remain the controlling shareholder with at least 51 per cent anyway. Ngati Pahauwera was one of relatively few organisations and companies to lodge formal submissions. Of those that did, many urged the council to accelerate the port’s development without expressing strong views on the funding and ownership options. Napier City Council favoured the share sale option, but suggested its size should be limited to meet only the port’s immediate capital needs. Napier’s port needs to expand to cope with massive growth in apple and log exports from the region and the increasing demands of the cruise ship industry. The port, which expects to turn away as many as seven cruise ships next year, recently gained resource consent for a $142 million berth extension to reduce congestion. - NZME

Iwi seeks bigger stake in port Ngati Pahauwera is urging Hawke’s Bay Regional Council to offer shares in Napier Port to residents and iwi at a discount in order to secure a local cornerstone holding in the firm. The iwi’s development trust said it would consider investing up to $5 million in the port, with a two-year restriction on sale, were the shares offered at a discount to the general offer. Trust chair Toro Waaka noted the council’s proposal to offer locals the first option over any shares sold, But in a submission on the proposal, he said that is unlikely to be attractive enough to secure a large cornerstone holding within the region. Waaka said that, from a portfolio risk perspective, Mohakabased Ngati Pahauwera would be better to invest across a range of ports – particularly given the development risk that comes with Napier Port as it expands. On that basis, it would be unlikely to subscribe for more than $100,000 without some other incentive. “It is for these reasons that HBRC should seriously consider the manner in which an IPO is presented to the public and the benefits that large, cornerstone investment from local iwi would bring to the table.” Napier Port, wholly-owned by the regional council, is the fourthlargest container operation in the country. It expects to invest about $350 million during the next decade to cater for the region’s growing log, timber and apple exports.

Lime’s venture into the New Zealand market has quickly proven fruitful since launching their escooters in mid-October. The American-based ride sharing giant has recorded more than 500,000 rides and already has 150,000 active unique riders, according to figures released by the company. And the Lime phenomenon may just be heating up, with Lime Launcher Hank Rowe saying the company is looking to expand its services to a number of other communities across the country. “We have received numerous requests for more scooter pilots to be launched and we are in conversation with a number of cities discussing how Lime can benefit their communities,” Rowe said. “Our rider community has grown exponentially since [our] launch and we want to provide more opportunities for New Zealanders to become part of Lime’s global community.” Lime initially launched 600

It’s time to get into the Christmas spirit T

oday is officially the day we can start celebrating Christmas – or is it? Conjecture surrounds where and what point it is appropriate to start recognising the impending arrival of one of the most anticipated days of the year. Generally, as long as people don’t start hearing Snoopy’s Christmas in the middle of September, they can handle the odd bit of tinsel being hung around the place a month or two later as long as it’s not over the top. But when the clock strikes December, it’s all for one and one for all when

it comes to unleashing the Christmas spirit on the world. We’ll now see shop windows glistening with signage and well wishes, Christmas music playing over the radio channels at a frenetic pace, stores advertising their seventh, eighth and ninth

Christmas sale and a somewhat jovial nature about people as the countdown to the holiday season really begins. And it’s that part I want to really talk about. Over the past few weeks things have been pretty glum out there. The weather has been rubbish and as the rain continued to fall earlier this week you could sense people’s growing frustration as they looked out of the window in disappointment at yet another grey and wet day. Chuck around a little bit of bright red and the prospect of, potentially, some much more

suitable weather for this time of year and there is, all of a sudden, renewed hope. There is light at the end of the tunnel after all. That all-consuming grumpiness is magically a distant memory and everyone is seemingly happier, cherry and bright. But the real joy about this time of the year comes from the excitement in children. They are literally mesmerised by the prospect of a visit from Santa Claus and with letters written and wishlists penned, the next few weeks will seem like an eternity for those who become all

encapsulated by the occasion. For them, December is magical – a month of counting down and excitement. So, whether or not you are a believer in getting into the festive spirit, it’s worth remembering that, for many, the festive season is the most exciting and enjoyable time of the year. We could all probably do with a little cheer in our lives at the moment as we try and emerge from the tiresome grey of the weather and what better way to do it than getting into a little bit of Christmas spirit.

et’s talk cows. Seriously, that was one of the first headings I ever read in the Ashburton Guardian when we first moved here. I started to laugh as I could not understand why talking cows would even be in a newspaper let alone a whole article. Of course I had no understanding of the importance of the dairy industry to the town of Ashburton. I think of that little headline a lot when I read the Guardian and I am very happy to read such earth-shattering headlines every now and then from this fine local paper. So of course today I opened the paper to be amused by the bold statement – ‘Council Gives Pothole Repairs Priority’. Yip, in this month of record rains, tragic road accidents, politicians being thrown out of the debating chamber and the devastating Californian wildfires, we have pothole priority! Don’t get me wrong, potholes are serious, especially as a biker, and I’m pleased something is being done, but to me that is just business as usual for a group that is in charge of the conditions of our local roads. It’s like school saying – ‘reading now a priority at school’ or the police announcing – ‘theft is a crime’. So it gets me wondering, who

writes these little headlines that improve our time here on earth? Who is responsible for stringing short sentence starters of salacious sensationalism? Sub-editors. These are truly the forward pack of a newspaper, the engine room, the coal-shovelling, industrial bootwearing, time-clocking salt-ofthe-earth workers. Once you know what to look for, a sub-editor is easy to spot. Ever seen a pale office worker furtively crossing East Street with a buffalo hump – that’s a sub-editor. Have you ever been to a Christmas do where a desk jockey speaks in short, staccato statements and sound bites? That’s a sub-editor. They exist at times in a catatonic coffeeinduced state, pouring over roughly written opinion pages like an auditor reads annual financial reports. Sub-editors are the grammar police and do real good work to make sure not much mistakes

get published. They are at the beck and call of the editor who demands titillating text and tenacious titles that entice early-morning risers to read on. Many times the subs are first to arrive and last to leave as they scurry to arrange the crumbs of a local story into a palatable feast for the eyes. Being involved in the heart of newspaper production makes the sub-editor a conduit of news and gossip. Want to know why your neighbours were visited by the boys in blue, ask a subeditor. Ever wondered what really went on behind closed council doors, our local subs will know exactly who was there and how many ratepayer-funded sausage rolls were consumed. But for all their cardigan-wearing, macramé-loving exterior, they are the plastic surgeons of the media world. No-one else can cut and put together the amateur efforts of an opinionated outsider like a sub-editor. We never hear from them directly, yet we read their work every day. In a world of overcrowded, self-appointed social media wannabes, the sub-editors are the voice we hear. Their ability to finely craft and coerce sentences and paragraphs

that succinctly capture the main points of an article is evident in the black and white that sits in front of you. So next time your eyes immediately fixate on a heading of hyperbolic proportions that draws you into a report, article or opinion, know that a sub has done their job. So what will they title this piece? Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. When Logan McCorkindale was nine and looking for a sport to play, his mum suggested croquet after seeing an advertisement in the paper for a have-a-go day. He went along to Ashburton’s Waireka Croquet Club and never looked back, and now – almost 10 years later – he is eyeing up his first ever trip out of New Zealand next year, to the world under-21 croquet championships in England. McCorkindale, 18, is one of a group of young Mid Cantabrians who had performed with distinction on the national stage in recent years, and this year he has decided to really chance his arm. With his schooling now finished and a gap year planned for 2019, croquet has become McCorkindale’s number one focus, spending a good two hours a day training, although the recent run of bad weather meant he hadn’t frequented Waireka as much as he would have liked. The summer season has been pretty good to McCorkindale so far though. Of the four national or South Island tournaments he’s competed in he’s made the finals in three, and won two. Most recently he competed at the South Island golf croquet championships in early November and took it out, beating one of the country’s top players to win it. McCorkindale was currently ranked 35th in the national golf croquet rankings and he beat Dennis Bulloch, who was 10th on the list. This South Islands were just a part of his build-up to the New Zealand Golf Croquet Championships which will be held from January 18-25 in Nelson, and the New Zealand Open in Mt Maunganui which is held just before the nationals. But McCorkindale has a bigger picture in mind too, with selection for the national team for the under-21 worlds in England in July next year a big part of that, and the open world championships which follow that. He is already a member of the national under-21 squad, but knew he had a lot more hard work to do to get there, and he is determined to do it. His early season form so far

Switch for Johnson Shaun Johnson’s anticipated move to Cronulla would not only bring a change of scenery but could also see the former Warriors star make a positional switch from halfback to five-eighth. Johnson’s career remains up in the air, but it’s widely expected he will join the Sharks next season. Warriors captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck took to social media to wish his former team-mate all the best, joking he was anxious about the prospect of lining up against his good friend next season. “Crazy week! He placed first in the secondary schools’ doubles championship with his partner Josie Tallents, and in the doubles for national under 21s Tallents and McCorkindale were second in the four-day tournament. Fellow Waireka members Christopher Spittal and Kaleb Small won the doubles at the national under 21s, while another – Edmund Fordyce – won the singles. Fordyce, Spittal, Small and another Mid Cantabrian, Jacob Smith, were also in the national under-21 squad. The next big thing on the cal-

endar for many local players, including McCorkindale, was the South Island Association Croquet Championships. So, with his Year 13 exams done and dusted, once the rain finally clears and summer kicks in, his training would hit top gear. “I practise for about two hours every day, mainly because this year is my last year of school and I’ve sort of got the time before I figure out what I’m going to do,” McCorkindale said. After two ranking tournaments he’d got his national ranking up to 35 and wanted to keep improving on that. At the moment, the top golf

croquet player in New Zealand was a 19-year-old, with Fordyce ranked third. In recent years more and more young people had taken up the sport in New Zealand, and Mid Canterbury had proven to be a top breeding ground for young croquet talent. McCorkindale was keen to try and encourage other young people to try the sport, which he described as surprisingly challenging. “It takes a lot of hand eye coordination and a tactical mind to play croquet, the sort of challenge that many young people would enjoy”.

Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has refused to stand down, once against stalling his swap with Anthony Seibold. The NRL coaching swap had been mooted for months after Bennett confirmed he would coach at South Sydney on a two-year deal from 2020 – the same year Seibold had agreed to begin mentoring Brisbane on a four-season contract. “The (immediate) Souths move was never instigated by me,” Bennett said. “I did a contract with Souths for 2020 and 2021. We never talked about 2019.” - AAP

Stars will come out NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg has guaranteed the league’s biggest stars will be on show at next year’s inaugural World Cup of Nines despite a packed calendar. The first edition of the tournament, which will feature 12 men’s teams and four women’s teams, will be held on October 18-19 at the new Western Sydney Stadium. It will be held two weeks after the NRL grand final and before the international window, which will include Australia taking on New Zealand and Tonga as well as Great Britain’s tour. The NRL season kicks off with the Indigenous All Stars game on February 14, with round one a month later. - AAP

It’s taken a fair few years of hard work and a whole heap of passion to get Andrea Cousins to where she is today. A netball coach who started her coaching career with club teams in Mid Canterbury, spending Saturday afternoons braving the elements at the old Middle Road netball courts, Cousins decided to take it to the next level eight years ago and took her coaching skills up the road to Christchurch. There, she took a club from premier two to premier one champions, and last year landed the role of assistant coach with the Mainland team in the national Beko Netball League. Where netball could take her in the future, Cousins doesn’t know, but one thing she did know was that Mid Canterbury Netball gave her an ideal start to her coaching career, so whenever opportunities arose to give back, she was keen to do just that. So next weekend, when Mid Canterbury Netball’s new coach developer Claire Tappin holds her second weekend of coaching sessions for local netball coaches, Cousins would be there to share her experiences and give an in-

sight into the life of a busy coach. Cousins had coached in Christchurch for eight years now, making regular trips up the road during winter to help steer a number of sides through their seasons. It was an approach by Christchurch’s Technical club that started it all for her. Cousins had been coaching Hampstead and Mid Canterbury A when she got a phone call from Technical asking if she’d be interested in taking on their A team. The team was in premier two in Christchurch and determined to get out of it, so Cousins decided to take herself out of her comfort zone. “I do like a challenge and I’m a person who likes to set myself goals, and that was a really big incentive,” Cousins said. It took two years to get Technical out of premier two and into premier one, and last year – after four years of making the premier one finals – Technical finally took the title out, for the first time in the club’s history. Cousins said the club’s other goal had been to get its B team into premier two, and they’d also achieved that. Job done, Cousins had decided to move on, and had resigned

from Technical and had no plans to take on any other premier teams at this stage, in order to focus on a new role she landed last year, as well as herself. Cousins wanted to focus her attention on the Mainland Beko team, and use the season to finish off the high performance pathway modules she was yet to complete. Times have changed in netball. Cousins said if you wanted to go places as a netball coach and even apply for representative roles, you needed the Netball New Zealand qualifications behind you. But over the past few years she’d been so busy doing the actual coaching, that she hadn’t had the time to invest into getting her qualifications up to scratch. Now, she will. Last year she was up to Christchurch five times a week, and the year before that when she was coaching Christchurch Girls’ High School, Christchurch Under-17 and Technical, she was up the road six days a week. But it had been well worth it. Cousins said that every coaching job she’d held over the years had helped her grow, even coaching her youngest daughter’s Year 5 and 6 Allenton Eagles team in

the local competition. Cousins said it wasn’t always about getting results on the board; coaching was just as much about getting results with players, and growing an individual’s game, and she was passionate about youth netball because that was where future stars were formed. Cousins said she took a lot of learnings from her early days coaching club and representative netball in Mid Canterbury, that were still relevant today. When she returned next weekend to deliver a session at the Mid Canterbury Netball coaches courses, she was keen to teach up-and-coming coaches the importance of communication. “It’s about how to communicate with the players, that feedback and empowerment, and getting to know your players to get the best out of them,” Cousins said. Anyone who had ever played with, or under, Cousins would tell you she had a true passion for netball, and that wasn’t diminishing with time. “I try to get away from that word ‘enthusiastic’, but it follows me wherever I go,” Cousins said. “But I just love what I do – I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t.” Her first year with the Beko side

had been a chance to work with some fabulous athletes who had to be ready to be called up to the region’s top team – the Mainland Tactix – at any time, and Cousins loved it and was looking forward to another shot next season. What other challenges were in her future, Cousins didn’t know. “I think my big goal now is to be the best coach I can be, and I don’t meant that as in to coach the Ferns or anything like that. “I simply mean it as in I want to keep progressing as a coach so that I can connect with more players and have the ability to grow their games,” Cousins said. Dec 9, 10am-midday: Player centred coaching with a question and answer session with Andrea Cousins. Mid Canterbury’s open grade cricket competition is set to make a return today after almost a month of no play. Two wet weekends and a long holiday weekend break mean there has been no play for the past three weekends, and teams will be eager to get back out on to the field and blow the cobwebs away again today. With only four teams in the Muirhead Rosebowl 45-over competition and having missed two rounds, it means that today’s round is actually set to be a replay of the sole round that has actually been played so far this season. The Muirhead Rosebowl is the second competition of the season, with a three-week T20 competition having got the season under way, and round one followed that back on November 3. On that day, Lauriston played Tech at the Ashburton Domain and it was Lauriston who came away with the win on what was a low-scoring day all round. Lauriston won by 24 runs after batting first and making just 92, which proved to be enough, while in the other game in the opening round Coldstream beat Methven by four wickets. Methven batted first at Coldstream and, like Lauriston, posted a relatively low total of just 78 all out for Coldstream to chase, thanks largely to the work of

Kids among the medals It was a successful weekend just gone for some of Ashburton’s springiest kids. Last Sunday 10 trampoline athletes took to the tramps at Olympia Gym to compete in the final TCI competition of the season. Competing against other clubs from

Second fine for Braswell The NBL have doubled down on their punishment for New Zealand Breakers coach Kevin Braswell’s latest outburst against referees. Braswell has copped a $1000 fine after a tirade against unjust officiating following last Friday’s loss to Perth in Auckland. Home track advantage

Carl Markham is hoping a little local knowledge can go a long way on his home track tomorrow at Methven. The current junior vice-president of the Methven Trotting Club will line up three horses at the annual Christmas meeting for the club and while hopeful, more than he is confident, he’s sure none of his team will disgrace themselves in their respective contests. Based just out of Methven, Markham and his wife Lyn train a small team, but take three-quarters of their current racing stock to the meeting with Jafa Kitten, Midfrew Tarpediem and Bear’s Rest set to do battle. Midfrew Tarpediem is engaged in two races at the Mt Harding Racecourse meeting but will only line up in the one, with a decision on which race to be made at some stage on Saturday. “He’s in the Green Mile and also a lower grade race,” Markham said. “We put in him in there to ensure the race got off the ground for the club, but he gets in well with a good draw (1), and with his gate speed he might be able to get the right drag along behind the right sort of horse. “If not, he’ll line up in the other race and he’s drawn one there and is as good away from the standing start as he is behind the mobile, so he’d land in a good spot in that race as well.” Son, Jeremy, will do the handling of the 10-year-old gelding as he builds back up to form and fitness following an injury earlier in the year. He will also do the driving of Bear’s Rest who is a recent acquisition to their stable having
