Welcome to the Asheville Symphony’s most ambitious season yet! After years of innovation, creativity, and artistic excellence, we are delighted to share with you an exuberant 2022-2023 season — filled with exciting new initiatives and a reimagined take on the classics, as well as the triumphant return of the Asheville Amadeus Festival. Our 2022-2023 Masterworks Series offers seven extraordinary concerts that feature a wide range of composers — from Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonin Dvořák to Fazil Say and Jessie Montgomery — and unique programs, including a Night at the Opera (think Verdi, Puccini, and more), an icy Scandinavianinspired program, our New World-themed exploration of American orchestral music, and more. Speaking of American music, we are thrilled to announce the long-awaited return of the Asheville Amadeus Festival, this year featuring banjo superstar Béla Fleck as the festival headliner! Taking place May 11-20, this evolution of Asheville Amadeus will explore the many shades of Americana, from bluegrass, jazz, and classical to pop, rock, and folk. Stay tuned for more details this winter about this exciting ten-day festival. The wildly popular ALT ASO chamber orchestra series returns this season as well, bringing your Asheville Symphony out of the concert hall into new and unusual venues. We will return to Highland Brewing and the Orange Peel, and will also expand our list of iconic Asheville venues to include Hi-Wire Brewing’s brand-new R.A.D. Beer Garden and Salvage Station’s mammoth outdoor stage on the banks of the French Broad River. Seven Masterworks concerts, New Year’s Eve (with Bond...James Bond), four ALT ASO performances, a polyphonic piano recital, the return of Symphony in the Park, and an all new Asheville Amadeus Festival coming in May 2023 — there will be no shortage of opportunities for you to experience your Asheville Symphony your way. MASTERWORKS 1 Thomas Wolfe Auditorium Saturday, September 17, 2022, 8:00 p.m. We open our 22-23 season with the spirit of virtuosity. Montgomery captures the energy of young virtuosos with Starburst, Mozart spotlights the dazzling range of the clarinet with the first concerto written for the instrument, and Brahms takes on his idol, Beethoven, with his hard-earned first symphony (often referred to as Beethoven’s Tenth).

Clarinet Anthony McGill Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character,” Avery Fisher Prize winner Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. Currently serving as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — that orchestra’s first African-American principal player — McGill also maintains a dynamic international solo and chamber music career, including his performance alongside violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Gabriela Montero at President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

Explore the vast, wandering Silk Road and central Asia with Say and Borodin. From De Falla, visit a moonlit oasis with his iconic work for piano and orchestra: Nights in the Gardens of Spain.

Piano Adam Golka With “brilliant technique and real emotional depth,” Adam Golka returns to the Asheville Symphony. Polish-American pianist Adam Golka (born 1987) first performed all of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas when he was 18 years old, and in 20202021 Adam Golka performed the cycle of Beethoven’s 32 Sonatas at the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park (Florida) and at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue (NYC).

Piano Evren Ozel “The daring creativity and fierce passion Ozel channeled surpasses musicians twice or even three times his age.” American pianist Evren Ozel has won numerous honors and awards including scholarships from the U.S Chopin Foundation and Young Arts Foundation, first prize at the 2016 Boston Symphony Concerto Competition, and second prize as well as Mozart and Chopin special prizes at the 2018 Dublin International Piano Competition. Ozel presents an exquisite program exploring polyphony, the musical concept of multiple independent melodic lines occurring at the same time.

Piano Jacob Bernhardt Winner of the 2021 Cleveland Institute of Music’s concerto competition, Jacob Bernhardt, a native of the Chicago area, earned his bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Bob Jones University, and his master’s degree in collaborative piano from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
MASTERWORKS 5 First Baptist Church of Asheville Saturday, March 18, 2023, 8:00 p.m. Inspired by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez outside of Madrid, Rodrigo captures “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains” in his concerto for classical guitar. Accompanied by Vrebalov’s Gratitude from Sea Ranch Songs and Frank’s Coqueteos from Leyendas, Beethoven closes this program with his “revolutionary” First Symphony — a sparkling declaration of his young talent.

Our soloist and Asheville Amadeus Festival headliner, Béla Fleck, brings that same approach to the banjo by rediscovering and redefining the instrument. Banjo Béla Fleck Just in case you aren’t familiar with Béla Fleck, there are some who say he’s the world’s premier banjo player. Others claim that Béla has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations.
