Celebrating Oswestry

This year’s Britain in Bloom judging in Oswestry fell the day after St Oswald’s feast day, 5th August. To celebrate the origins of “Oswestry”, the Oswestry in Bloom team decided to focus on St Oswald’s Well. Once a site of pilgrimage and devotion, the well is now a quiet area to sit, overlooked by a huge statue of a large bird. The team have been tidying the area planting spring bulbs and perennials, whilst Oswestry Town Council have been repairing the platform above the well.

Inspired by the well-dressings seen in Derbyshire, the team decided to create their own interpretation. The traditional clay method takes a huge amount of experience, and the technicalities are complex. Oswestry’s cut down version consists of panels decorated with natural materials celebrating the town, location and fauna & flora.  Designed by the committee, the panels were decorated by volunteers, the public and children at workshops held in Oswestry Memorial Hall over the weekend. The workshops were held in conjunction with the Rural Art Hub.

The panels were put up on St Oswald’s Day and complement the floral arrangements by Oswestry & Borders Flower Arranging Club

Tom’s open garden raises £1,851 for Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire

More than £1,850 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire when award-winning Shropshire horticulturist Tom Pountney opened his beautiful country garden to visitors for the third year running.

Tom, who owns Offcot in Kynaston, near Kinnerley, Oswestry, is a loyal charity supporter, welcoming visitors regularly to his half-acre garden to raise money for the National Garden Scheme.

“We had a fantastic day, with a record attendance and the garden looked absolutely amazing,” said Gill Eleftheriou, spokeswoman for Shrewsbury Macmillan Fundraising Group.

“We would like to thank everyone who came and supported us and helped raise a wonderful £1,851 which will provide much-needed support to people affected by cancer in Shropshire,” added Gill.

The group’s next fundraising event is on Friday, September 5, when Halls Fine Art hosts a Shrewsbury Macmillan Coffee Morning and Antiques Experience between 10am and 2pm at Halls’ headquarters on Bowman Way, Battlefield, Shrewsbury.

For more information, please contact the group by email at shrewsbury macmillanfundraising@gmail.com or Halls Fine Art on Tel: 01743 450700.

Designs in Mind Call for Storage Support

Oswestry based Arts for Mental Health Studio Designs in Mind is currently downsizing their Studio space. The CIC has been based in their current location for 20 years, and their current studio space is a warm and encouraging environment for over 100 regular attendees.

However, due to increasing challenges in the fundraising landscape, Designs in Mind is moving their services into their ground floor studio.

“It has been essential for us to take drastic steps to lower our costs in order to protect the delivery of our core workshop programme,” says CFO Charlotte Phillips. “By moving into our groundfloor space and leaving our upper two floors we will reduce our overhead costs significantly and be able to continue to support people living locally for many years to come.”

Designs in Mind supports people living within Shropshire with mental health challenges, and for many is a crucial part of their continued wellbeing. Their exciting, colourful public art commissions provide access to a friendly community of designer-makers, listening support, and steps to better wellbeing.

In recent years the Design Studio has created ranges for Habitat and The Sanderson

Group, a larger-than-life Hands

Sculpture installation at RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital and several other large scale public art installations.

However, in reducing their studio size from 3 floors to just 1 floor, the Design Studio is facing storage difficulties and has put a call out for help with storing equipment.

If you are able to provide free or low cost storage options to Designs in Mind within North Shropshire, please reach out to them via phone 01691 655140 or email hello@designsinmind.co.uk.

A Smashing Sport: Oswestry Badminton Club Invites New Players to Join the Action

Badminton might not enjoy the same limelight as tennis or the growing hype around pickleball and padel, but it remains one of the most exciting, fast-paced racket sports around. Offering a unique blend of fitness, fun, and social connection all under one roof—and as the new season approaches Oswestry Badminton Club is keen to show just how accessible and enjoyable it can be.

As one of the area’s longest-established sports clubs, Oswestry Badminton Club has a proud history and passionate membership and is welcoming new players to grab their rackets and come down for some rallies.

Meeting every Monday night at Oswestry Leisure Centre (8pm-10pm), the club hosts a lively and inclusive evening of games. Where everyone gets to play with a range of partners, helping to mix abilities and create a fun yet competitive atmosphere.

Whether you’re wanting to improve your technique or get back into the sport after a break, the pace is lively, the games competitive, and the focus is firmly on enjoyment and development, then Oswestry Badminton is the place.

Craig Marston, long-time member and captain of Oswestry’s Men’s A Team, has been playing badminton for over 30 years. Passionate about the sport and its benefits, he’s clear about what makes it so special.

“Pickleball and padel may be trendy right now, but badminton remains the fastest racket sport out there with smashes reaching speeds of 350mph! You compare that to the fastest tennis serve which tops out at half the speed at 163mph.

“Badminton is quick, skilful, and good exercise. At Oswestry Badminton Club, we have a strong membership of all levels and ages. We’re a friendly group, and we want to see new players joining us.

“So, whether you’ve played in the past or currently play recreationally, you’ll find a warm welcome and a good game waiting for you here,” Craig adds.

“Our club night is two hours long, everyone gets plenty

of court time and there is no time for sitting out and having a rest,” Craig stated.

Competitive players will also find plenty to enjoy as the only local club to field teams in the Shropshire County badminton league, offering members the chance to take their game to the next level. League players regularly support and challenge developing players, offering encouragement and advice to help improve their performance

One such example is Amber Owen, a recent addition to the club who joined after relocating to the area.

“I joined Oswestry badminton club in January and previously I only played casually with family and friends in a village hall, but since joining the club my game has really developed thanks to the help of other members,” she says. “I love the game and now I’m keen to form a ladies’ social team. Recently we’ve had a few more ladies of similar standard join, and we are looking to set up a ladies team to play other clubs for competitive fun and match experience.”

The club is building momentum with visitors welcome at any time. You just need to bring a racket, suitable footwear and a big bottle of water to rehydrate.

Above all, Oswestry Badminton Club prides itself on being both friendly and competitive. It’s a club where social sport meets serious skill.

“Badminton is such a great sport, it’s fast, fun, and brilliant exercise,” says Craig. “Whether you’re returning to the sport, looking to sharpen your skills, or just want a great way to stay active and social, Oswestry Badminton Club is the perfect place to play. We’d love to see some new faces on court.”

If you’re interested in joining or would like to visit one evening to try it out, get in touch with the club by emailing oswestrybadders@gmail.com or calling 07866 679436.

Meet The Team

St John Ambulance has been in Oswestry since May 1885, and our cadets have been around since 1931. Throughout our 140 years our volunteers have proudly served our community.

Every year we teach hundreds of people vital first aid skills at our workshops, events, and public demonstrations so that everyone can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved!

We provide first aid cover at lots of local and national events every year, including the food festival, Shrewsbury half marathon, Theatre Severn, and Oswestry Olympians events to name just a few!

We inspire the next generation of lifesavers through our cadet programme!

You would be surprised how many famous singers started out in a church choir - Come and find out why

Mike Donkin, Choirmaster at St. Oswald’s Church in Oswestry says we don’t just mean classical ones. Lots of pop singers, folk singers and jazz singers started out in a church choir.

Why?

Firstly: We teach the Royal School of Church Music’s ‘Voice for Life’ programme which considers the person as a whole. As a singer, your body is your instrument, so we don’t just teach you to sing the notes, but we develop the singer’s body through good posture, breath control and voice production.

Secondly: Right from the start we teach musicianship, therefore the young singer gains a thorough understanding of how music works. The chorister will sing music from different periods and styles learning how to adapt the voice to different genres. Here we sing music from very early right up to the most modern,

Thirdly: Ordinary choirs rehearse for a long period before putting on a concert whereas we perform music to a high standard each week. Therefore, the young singers develop the ability to learn music quickly and become

good sight readers. As a spin off from this, these skills affect all other aspects of the chorister’s life, and they do well academically.

Whatever sort of music you want to sing we will give you the techniques to do so successfully.

We are having a Taster Session on Saturday 20 September at St. Oswald’s Parish Centre from 10.00am to 12.30pm. This will be lead by Samantha Lewis.

The morning will start with a brief session for young people and parents and go on to give you an idea of what being a chorister is like. It will be good fun.

Obviously, we hope that those attending will want to join but there will be no pressure to do so. So, there’s nothing to lose and perhaps everything to gain.

You can just turn up, but it would be helpful to know if you are coming. Just email Mike at michaeldonkin44@ gmail.com or call 07779 917724.

We hope to see you there.

Monthly Giving with The Movement Centre

The Movement Centre, based here in Oswestry, is a registered charity with a dedicated team providing specialist therapy for children who face movement challenges due to conditions such as cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, acquired brain injury, Down syndrome, and developmental delay.

The Centre’s core therapy is Targeted Training, a fully funded, 12-month programme that helps children gain vital skills like sitting, standing, and walking. This unique approach focuses on the principles of paediatric neuromuscular development, using custom-made equipment, regular reviews, and personalised treatment plans. Family involvement is key, ensuring every child receives the best possible support throughout their journey.

Each year, around 70–80 children benefit from this life-changing therapy. But to continue offering it free of charge, and to grow our reach we must raise £350,000 annually. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on charitable donations, much of which comes from the

generosity of our local community. That’s why we’ve launched Monty’s Monthly Giving Programme

By donating a small amount each month, you can help us secure a stable future for the children who need us most. Regular donations

provide vital income that allows us to plan ahead and continue delivering this specialist therapy.

Your support can truly change lives.

Minutes with the MP

It’s now a year since I was re-elected as your MP, and I wanted to share an update on what I’ve been doing on your behalf over the past 12 months.

In Westminster, I’ve spoken in Parliament 182 times, voted 184 times, and submitted more than 450 written questions to Government ministers. I’ve used every tool available to raise the issues that matter to North Shropshire.

Locally, I’ve fought hard to protect and improve public services. I was proud to work with the community and help save Oswestry’s main Post Office, and I continue to press for better mobile coverage, stronger banking provision and outreach Post Office services.

Transport and infrastructure remain key concerns. I recently met the Roads Minister who we need to provide funding to upgrade Llynclys Crossroads. Designs have been made to build a completely new junction, and I’ll keep making the case for the Government to invest. I continue to call for the Gobowen to Oswestry rail link to

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your existing fireplace or find a beautiful statement piece to warm up your home, we’ve got you covered.

All our fireplaces are of the highest quality.

be restored and for better bus services to help people without access to a car.

Flooding has become more frequent in rural areas like ours, and I chair a cross-party group pushing for long-term solutions, while also working on local problems like those in Gobowen and Pant Glas.

As the Lib Dem Health Spokesperson, I’ve led calls for better access to GPs, NHS dentists, ambulances and mental health services. I’ve also stood up for family farms, small businesses, veterans, and service families.

Finally, I’ve enjoyed getting out and about—visiting schools, farms, and local events, and helping over 7,500 constituents through casework over the last year alone.

I’m incredibly grateful for your continued support. I will keep fighting for a fairer deal for North Shropshire—whether it’s decent healthcare, proper investment in our towns, or the basics like reliable transport and broadband.

If there’s anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

LEGAL BEAGLES

Being a pet guardian in the UK comes with legal responsibilities, as stated in the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Guardians have a duty of care to keep pets healthy and happy. All domestic animals have the legal right to:

• live in a suitable environment

• eat a suitable diet

• exhibit normal behaviour patterns

• be housed with or apart from, other animals

• be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease

At home, in someone else’s home, or on private property

Allowing your dog to be ‘dangerously out of control’ is illegal on private property, and in public.

Even if no bite occurs, if a person feels your dog may hurt them, they may still be considered ‘dangerously out of control’. An exemption is if a dog bites someone who has no legal right to be in your home (e.g. a burglar).

Dog barking can be classed as a ‘statutory nuisance’, resulting in legal action.

Out and about in public

Dogs need two forms of identification when in a public place: a collar with your contact details, and microchipping is advised.

Cleaning up after your dog in all public spaces is legally required.

Many public spaces and roads legally require dogs to be on a lead. You are fully liable for any accidents or damage your dog causes, including injuries to people or damage to property such as gardens or crops.

Drivers who injure dogs with their vehicle must give their name and address to the owner.

Cats are considered free-roaming animals with a legal ‘right to roam’. But cat owners still bear responsibility if their cats cause damage or injury.

Control your dog to protect livestock. If your dog is found worrying livestock, farmers have the right to intervene e.g. euthanising the dog.

Dogs in Cars

The Highway Code requires dogs (and other animals) to be ‘suitably restrained so they cannot distract or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly’.

Experience the joy of volunteering at Derwen College

Derwen College is inviting members of the public to find out how they can make a real difference in young people’s lives at a Volunteer Taster Day on Tuesday, 23 September.

The College, which supports 16–25-year-olds with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), is offering taster sessions in its onsite charity shop, garden centre & gift shop, and walled garden. Whether you’re greenfingered, love meeting new people, or simply want to make a difference, there’s a volunteer role for you.

Morning (10am–12pm) and afternoon (1pm–2.30pm) sessions will give would-be volunteers the chance to roll up their sleeves and try out a range of opportunities – from helping in The Vintage Advantage charity shop and garden centre shop, to working alongside our horticulture and grounds teams in the gardens and campus grounds.

Events & Volunteer Coordinator Meg Charman said: “Volunteering with Derwen Charity means making a direct impact on the futures of our students. Our Marketplace outlets give learners vital work experience to help them move on to employment, supported living and greater independence after College. Whether you’re behind the till and sorting donations in the charity shop, or planting seeds

and mowing lawns, your time makes a real difference. If you can spare just a couple of hours or a whole day each week, we can create a flexible role to suit you.

“Our Volunteer Taster Day is a relaxed, hands-on way to find out more. Come and meet our students, clients and staff, learn something new, and discover how rewarding volunteering can be.”

Volunteer Taster Day participants are welcome to attend either the morning or afternoon session or stay for the full day. There’ll be tea, coffee and Derwen-made cake on offer, plus a 10% discount in the on-site Café or Garden Centre shop for those staying through lunch. Alternatively, visitors can bring a packed lunch to enjoy in our gardens.

Volunteering roles are available in a wide range of areas, depending on your interests and skill set – from retail and gardening, to helping at events or even beekeeping. Derwen Charity also enjoys hosting corporate volunteer days with businesses including HSBC bank, British Gas and Aico.

To find out more and register your interest, email charity@derwen.ac.uk or call 01691 661234 and speak to Megan Charman.

Friendly society’s special taster events

Friendly society, Oswestry Oddfellows is inviting local residents to a series of special taster events as part of its annual Friendship Month celebrations this September.

The local not-for-profit group, made up of around 250 members, mostly older adults, is appealing for people to push past any uncertainty or self-doubt, and to say ‘yes’ to giving their friendly group a try.

They are kicking off their festivities with a free Coffee and Cake Morning on Thursday 18 September at 10am Held at The Memorial Hall, Festival Square, Oswestry.

Promising a warm welcome to any newcomers, Lana Shtakun for Oswestry Oddfellows, said, “Trying new activities inevitably puts us in situations where we might feel uncomfortable or a little out of place – but that’s all part of the experience. People who try us always leave saying they wish they hadn’t worried so much and they were pleased they came along.

“It’s easy to say ‘no’ to anything that challenges our regular habits. But these tasters have been specifically designed to put you at ease.

“Saying ‘yes’ to giving something new a try, especially a shared experience, has so many rewards, especially for wellbeing.”

Oswestry Oddfellows has been celebrating Friendship Month since 2010, aiming to bring local people together through special taster events and to encourage the formation of new, supportive friendships. It’s one of 96 branches of the Oddfellows, which is one of the oldest and largest friendly societies in the UK.

The Society aims to improve its members’ lives through friendship and support. As well as its events, members can access a variety of benefits including care and welfare support and a travel club. There are also opportunities to take part in fundraising and volunteering initiatives.

To register an interest in attending one of Oswestry Oddfellows’ Friendship Month taster events, or to find out more about the group and its activities, email Lana.Shtakun@oddfellows.co.uk, call 07927 515230, or request a local info pack at www.friendshipmonth.com.

OF THE MONTH

SEPTEMBER 2025

Sew Torn (15)

AVAILABLE FROM NOWTV/SKY CINEMA AND ELSEWHERE.

Seamstress Barbara will do anything to save her failing business, so when, during a mission to replace a missing button for a demanding client, she comes across the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, she has three choices, call the police, do nothing, or take the money and run.

The different consequences of each decision are played out in this ingenious comedy thriller from 2024, now streaming in the UK.  Barbara’s business skills may be questionable but her sewing skills might just save her life.  The thread isn’t so much narrative as deadly, give this woman a needle and some cotton and she might just make you regret underestimating her. A small cast of mostly unknowns consistently surprise and entertain in this beautifully written 90 minute gem of a film.

Can you offer some time to help Oswestry’s new cinema grow?

The Maona cinema, which is opening in the old Kinokulture building, will be showing films four days a week – Thursday to Sunday – to give local audiences of all ages the chance to watch a large and varied selection of films. But they need a bank of volunteers to help realise that aim.

Cinema manager Holly Maries is looking for people to help in various roles, from stewarding to helping behind the bar, from being a projectionist to doing a spot of cleaning!

The former Kinokulture had a loyal band, and Holly has contacted them directly – but with more films than ever on offer, obviously extra helpers are needed.

“I’ve already experienced the community spirit and the real desire to see the cinema work,” she said, “by those who’ve been with us to help revamp the building ahead of opening day. They’ve worked so hard and with pride for this new venture.”

If YOU feel you have the desire to make a difference by spending some time as art of the Maona crew, then do contact Holly – her email is holly@maonacinema.com.

Maona is also renewing an appeal for donations, which you can check out via the Spacehive community fundraising website.

POETRY

Old Racecourse

One moment all was still

On Cyrn y Bwch hill

The next a breeze

Rocked autumn trees

Shaking down

A shower of golden brown

To carpet my way

And on that day

A hint of winter underlined

That another summer’s left behind.

History is being made as Oswestry’s newest cinema

opens its doors

The Maona cinema is filling the gap left by the closure of Kinokulture almost 18 months ago, and in the same premises they will be showing a wide variety of films.

Tatenda Jamera, says the project has been a long-held dream – he took up the cudgels when plans fell through to keep Kinokulture going when the previous proprietors retired, and despite facing many hurdles has beavered away behind the scenes to get Maona up and running.

And while it’ll be a work-inprogress in the early days, with improvements continuing around the cinema programme, he stresses that he’s not in it for the short-term.

“My long-view plan is to gut the building, make it a two-screen cinema, introduce a café and workplaces, and even set up outdoor summer screenings,” he told a meeting of former and prospective volunteers who will help run the place.

Mr Jamera comes from a solid film background. He studied filmmaking at Oxford, and then at the National Film and Television School. In 2021 he launched Maona, initially to help support those from a minority background to show their films,

and the company grew to work with established cinemas across the country.

Oswestry is the first time he has his own cinema base though, and he told the volunteers how excited he is to get it up and running.

He plans to have ten screenings across four days, Thursday to Sunday. And there’ll be a wide range of films, from the latest releases to independent films –with everything in between.

Before Kinokulture, there have been three big cinemas in Oswestry. Two started in the years before the First World War.

The Plaza in Oswald Road, advertising “the greatest successes” on screen, was originally the Plaza ballroom, opening in the 1860s. Later renamed the Playhouse, it stood on the site of the current KC Jones garage.

The King’s Theatre – later the Century after being modernised in the 1950s – had over 1,000 seats. It was in New Street, occupying the site of the now closed Wilkinson store.

The “baby” was the Regal, opening grandly in May 1933 during the pre-WW2 cinema boom. It was also large, with

around 750 seats in the stalls and over 300 upstairs in the circle.

It was taken over by the national Granada chain in the 1950s, closing in 1975 before reopening as the independent Regal a year later. That then closed in 1994, along with many others in the face of competition from TV.

Does Oswestry need a cinema? There’s been a national cinema revival in recent years, with big movies generating big publicity and big attendances. And it’s not just for the older generations: blockbusters for children and teenagers have seen that share of the market grow hugely, and they of course are the cinemagoers of the future.

At the time of going to press, Oswestry Life can’t bring you the opening schedule - we will publish film lists in the future – so keep an eye out on social media for what’s coming up.

And whether it’ll be your first foray into a local cinema, or if you’re a returning Kinokulture or Oswestry Film Society customer, do support this exciting venture, and help Maona grow and establish itself for future generations and for a long time to come.

Managing Fitness Around the Menstrual Cycle

Coaching women is often ov erlooked in the fitness industry, yet there are clear and important physiological differences between men and women. Women are not just “smaller than men.” I’m Luke, a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Coach House Fitness, and I want to highlight how essential it is to consider the menstrual cycle when it comes to training, nutrition, and overall health.

Hormone levels fluctuate throughout a woman’s cycle, leading to changes in energy levels, stress response, training performance, and nutritional needs. One key hormone to consider is testosterone, which supports bone health, muscle mass, cognitive function and energy. A woman’s highest testosterone level during her cycle is still only about 10% of a man’s lowest. When testosterone is at its lowest, typically

Are you grappling with the trials of pain, discomfort, or limited mobility? in the early follicular phase, strength and energy may dip, making physical activity feel more challenging. On the flip side, when a woman ovulates, testosterone peaks, and many may notice a surge in strength or performance during this time.

Following ovulation, the body enters the luteal phase, during which the basal metabolic rate (BMR) naturally increases. This means women can burn an additional 100–400 calories per day at rest, depending on their size. While this can support fat burn, it also means women in a calorie deficit need to be careful. Fueling properly during this time can help maintain energy and avoid unwanted strain on the body.

While these shifts might seem small, they can significantly affect how a woman feels and performs in her training, and that’s why I believe factoring the menstrual cycle into a fitness programme and nutrition plan  is essential for long-term progress and well-being.

Honouring the Equinox

The Autumn Equinox or Mabon (22 September) marks the moment when day and night are in perfect balance. It’s a time to celebrate nature and the harvest, a time of reflection, gratitude, and preparation as we transition from the warmth of summer to the chill of winter. The balance of light and dark on this day also symbolises a need to find balance in our own lives—between work and rest, light and shadow, action and reflection.

Here are some lifestyle medicine inspired ways to celebrate this time:

Nutrition: Seasonal fruits and vegetables such as apples, squash, pumpkins and root vegetables, are often used to symbolise the earth’s bounty. Pick your own pumpkins at local farms such as Llynclys, Winston, Northwood or Arscott and then fling them on the first weekend of November with Fizzgigs in Ellesmere! fizzgigs.co.uk final-fling.

Movement: Seasonal Yoga Saturday Mornings with Jilly Shipway – Radbrook Community Hall Shrewsbury. 20 Sept, jillyshipway@hotmail.com 01743 249489. www.yogathroughtheyear.com

Community: Donating to food banks or volunteering in your community connects you to the traditional spirit of sharing the harvest.

Mental Wellbeing: Take a nature walk, Colemere countryside heritage site is a personal favourite or visit a sacred site such as Valle Cruis Abbey Llangollen, part of the Welsh Cistercian Way (britishpilgrimage.org). Take your own mini pilgrimage to St Oswald’s Well through Cae Glas and Brynhafod Parks, observing the changing colours of the trees that signal nature’s transition and the ongoing cycles of growth, decay and renewal. During your walk reflect on balance and change in your life, mirroring the natural balance of day and night.

Sleep: Spend a few minutes before bed meditating or journalling on the changes in nature and how they reflect your own life’s cycles. Write down at least 5 things you are grateful for from your day to honour the idea of gratitude at this time. All these practices have been shown to be beneficial for improving sleep and deepening a sense of positive wellbeing.

Have a happy healthy month.

Joy Isn’t a Luxury - It’s Your Birthright

A few years ago, I discovered a book, Choosing Happiness (Stephanie Dorwick). I’d always believed that happiness just happened - or didn’t. It was a revelation for me - that I could choose happiness.

At the time I was in a real funk - scratch that, miserablefeeling lost, sad, resentful, totally disconnected from the me I used to know. What I realised with this book, was that I wasn’t unhappy because of my circumstances, I was unhappy because I was focusing on what I didn’t have, what wasn’t working and fear of the future. No wonder I was miserable.

So, I made a new choice. I chose joy.

I began noticing what felt good,

what was beautiful, what was working. I wore bright colours. I sat in the sun. I noticed ladybirds, curious cloud shapes, the kindness of strangers. And as I made space for joy, my sense of happiness grew.

What is joy? It’s a spectrum - a small smile, a burst of delight. It’s colour, sunshine, laughter, birdsong, bubbles, that first sip of coffee. It’s both the little and the big things. It’s what lifts you on a dark day. And it matters. Joy reduces stress, builds resilience, strengthens immunity, deepens connection, and anchors us in the present moment. It’s mindfulness. Joy isn’t something you earn. It’s your birthright. It’s a sign you’re thriving. I believe. Would there be laughter and music if not for enjoyment? We’re not here just to work and worry - we’re here to enjoy being alive.

Health with Dr Paul Middleton

“Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”Noel Coward

Have you been hot this summer? But have you been too hot? A part of your brain called the hypothalamus controls your temperature – at around 37 degrees centigrade – which is the temperature your body processes like to operate at. If you are too hot you get heat exhaustion. If your temperature rises above 4O degrees you get heat stroke and that is serious.

Most of us have probably had a degree of heat exhaustion: you feel tired and weak, perhaps have a headache, and are generally sweating with warm skin as your brain tries to compensate. If this starts happening then you should move to a cool place, take off some clothing, have a cool drink, perhaps even spray cold water on your skin, or put cool packs in your groin or arm or neck and use a fan. If this fails to make you feel better in 30mins than you may need medical care. Children, the elderly, women, and people with chronic disease are all more vulnerable.

How can we prevent heat stroke? The UK health Security Agency (UKHSA) issues health alerts in very hot weather so this should prompt us to think. Avoid going out in the “midday sun” between 11am and 3pm. Wear light coloured and lightweight clothes and perhaps a hat. Stay hydrated but not with alcohol or caffeine! Keep windows and curtains closed. Consider a cool shower, stick to the shade where possible and, if your job involves working outdoors then be more alert to the danger on very hot days.

Now, heatstroke is where the poor old hypothalamus can’t cope with the heat. The symptoms worsen, perhaps associated with confusion, poor co-ordination, drowsiness and, paradoxically, a hot dry skin. This can result in fits and should be treated as an emergency. The patient may need placing in the recovery position and 999 called.

Have a smashing, sunny, safe summer!

Who keeps the family pet when a relationship breaks down?

Going through a divorce or relationship break-up is hard enough, but when a beloved pet is involved, emotions can run even deeper.

For many of us, pets of all sizes are considered members of the family, and the challenges of deciding who keeps the pet or how to share responsibility are often overlooked.

Prianka Muruhathas, a solicitor in Lanyon Bowdler’s family team, says it’s crucial to consider what will happen to the family pet in the event of a break-up.

She says, “All pets are considered chattels following a divorce - meaning they are legally defined as personal property, like a piece of furniture - even though they are frequently cherished members of the family.

“There is often evidence that one person is the primary carer for the pet, and it may even be feasible to determine who purchased the animal, which could help decide where the pet should reside following the breakdown in marriage.

“Couples are also urged to consider whether decisions would have an impact on any children, and who would be most suited to look after the pet after a separation.

“If there is a shared care agreement regarding a child and the pet is a dog, it is very likely that the pet will accompany the child between homes, and each parent will need to care for the dog while it is with them. This may not be as effective for other species (like cats, for example), who may find frequent house changes more challenging or unpleasant.

“The best approach is to try and reach agreement about where your pet will live, but if you are unable to do so the Family Court will decide, which can be a time-consuming and stressful experience for everyone involved.

“One way of avoiding this is to prepare what is known as a ‘pet-nup’ - an agreement made in advance that specifies ownership, custody, and other terms for your pet.

“A more conventional pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreement can also contain provisions for the pet. Unlike pre-nups, pet-nups are not legally binding documents, however, a court is likely to take it into account unless there is a good reason not to.”

An Oswestry-based business that began in 2000, is celebrating a significant milestone this September with 25 years of delivering innovative shading and security solutions to homes and businesses nationwide.

Roché Systems, headquartered at Artillery Business Park, Oswestry, has grown from a small team specialising in domestic security shutters to becoming one of the UK’s leading providers of outdoor living and security products.

This family owned-and-run company remains firmly rooted in Shropshire, where its growing team supports innovation and product development across both the outdoor living and security sides of the business.

The event will also welcome Vicky Bradbeer from Hope House Children’s Hospices, Roché’s chosen charity partner. Vicky will be on hand to discuss the charity’s latest fundraising events and how local businesses and individuals can get involved in supporting children and families.

“This event is a way for us to reflect on our journey, showcase what we do, and thank the people and partners who’ve supported us over the years,” Jodie added.

Playrooms

Playrooms are a blessing. Having a designated separate space to corral all the colourful and noisy paraphernalia that find their way into children’s lives, is a godsend. While storage is still key, for keeping spaces tidy and helping to teach the art of organisation and tidiness, this is also the best room to go all out on colour and pattern. You can create a bright and fun space to be in that also inspires creativity and playful expression. Consider using alphabets and educational charts as decorative accessories, fun shapes on everyday items like lighting, and brightly coloured squashy bean bags for a relaxing slump after all that play.

Prep your lawn for all year round success

For over 15 years, GreenThumb has been providing exceptional lawn care services in Oswestry, and surrounding areas, with a strong focus on outstanding customer service and quality results. Husband and wife team, Jason and Vicki Bell, have successfully managed the Oswestry branch since 2008. Together with their skilled and dedicated team, they deliver bespoke lawn care programmes and exceptional customer service to over a thousand lawns across the Oswestry, Llangollen, Ellesmere, Whitchurch, Malpas, Welshpool, and Newtown.

Two of the most beneficial treatments we offer are Lawn Aeration and Lawn Scarification

Lawn Aeration involves creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. This process relieves soil compaction, reduces moss-friendly conditions, thins out thatch, and encourages strong root growth, resulting in a healthier, more resilient lawn.

Lawn Scarification mechanically removes excess surface thatch — the layer of organic matter that can suffocate grass and encourage moss and weeds. Using professional machinery, thatch and moss are carefully extracted, allowing water, air, and fertilisers to penetrate the soil more effectively. This reduces disease risk and promotes vigorous new growth.

Join GreenThumb this summer and give your lawn the boost it needs with our Oasis NutraBooster treatment — completely free when you book our professional Aeration or Scarification service. This exclusive offer combines the long-term benefits of machine work with the immediate impact of advanced lawn nutrition.

NutraBooster is designed to relieve stress and strengthen your lawn from the inside out, delivering essential nutrients to help it recover from drought, heavy wear, shade, and poor soil conditions. Tailored to your lawn’s needs, it works alongside Aeration and Scarification to encourage denser growth, stronger roots, and that lush, carpet-like turf we all want.

By booking both the machine work and NutraBooster together, you’re giving your lawn the ultimate combination of improved soil structure, reduced thatch, and balanced nutrition — setting it up for success all year round.

weather * When you book both Aeration and Scarification machine work.

Our lawn care is year-round. We seed them, feed them, even control the weeds. And, be it maintenance or repair, we do the heavy lifting. Like Aeration and Scarification, releasing compacted soil and reducing thatch (both causes of moss) to allow moisture, air and nutrients down to the roots.

provides essential nutrients to revitalise your grass, promoting a lush green appearance whilst enhancing root development.

Gardening

An End to a Beautiful Season

As August closes, we celebrate a beautiful summer which has drawn plenty of visitors to our lovely Powys gardens. We have welcomed over 6,000 garden-lovers and raised almost £50,000 for the National Garden Scheme charities. With over 70 gardens (including five village-openings) generously opening for us this year, we thank all the garden owners and volunteers who have worked so hard to raise these amounts for the UK’s bestbeloved health and well-being charities.

Now it’s time to look for new gardens to swell the ranks in 2026. Do you own or know of a garden which might fit the bill? It doesn’t have to be Chelsea-standard with sweeping lawns and hundreds of specimen plants: visitors can often identify more with small village-gardens with wildlife-areas and tidy vegetable plots. Our villageopenings are increasingly popular: strolling around 5/6 gardens followed by home-made tea in the village hall is a great way to spend a lazy sunny afternoon.

If you are interested, please contact Powys Area Organiser, Susan Paynton on 01686 650531 susan. paynton@ngs.org.uk who will be happy to advise you.

We still have a few garden openings to finish the season. On Sunday 7 September, take a trip to the

beautiful gardens of Cwm-Weeg near Newtown (SY16 4AT). Set in 24-acres of wildflower-meadows and woodland, this 2.5-acre garden has extensive herbaceous plantings, grottos, sculptures, stumpery and vistas. Home-made teas. Admission £6, children free.

In October, The Dingle Nurseries near Welshpool (SY21 9JD) are opening 11th/12th for the NGS to showcase the glorious autumn colours in this special 4.5-acre garden. Further afield, Gregynog Hall near Newtown (SY16 3PL) will also be opening by donation on the 18th/19th.

Time to sign off for the season and thank all our visitors for their support in 2025. COULD YOUR FINANCES HANDLE THE UNEXPECTED?

We plan for so many things in life - holidays, home improvements, even what’s for dinner next week. But how many of us really plan for the unexpected?

The statistics reveal a sobering picture with Scottish Widows finding that 60% of UK adults have no life cover, and Shepherds Friendly discovering that even less - just 14% of people - have income protection.

It’s easy to overlook these kinds of cover when there’s so many other demands on our finances, but having them in place, can mean the difference between being financially fragile and financially resilient.

So where do you start?

Here are several ways you can improve your financial resilience:

Income protection – this steps in if illness or injury prevents you from working, providing a monthly payment (often around 60% of your salary) until you can return to work.

Critical illness cover – is typically there to provide a one-off tax-free lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a serious condition. It can help pay off debts, fund home adaptations, or simply give you breathing space to focus on your health.

Life insurance – this commonly pays out a cash sum to loved ones if you were to pass away, providing you with peace of mind that they will be financially supported.

Savings pot - lastly, try to set aside an emergency savings pot to cover around 3-6 months of expenses if possible. Think of this as your financial cushion for life’s unwanted surprises.

It’s all about ensuring you and your family can continue living life on your own terms, even when life doesn’t go according to plan.

If you’d like to explore what income protection, critical illness cover and life insurance options would be right for you – or review your current policiesgive our friendly team at Belgrave Wincham a call on 01691 886554 to arrange a free consultation.

Q&A

with GHP Legal’s

Q: My husband and I were on the brink of divorce, but after having counselling that revealed he is suffering from PTSD I have decided to stay and support him. He served in the armed forces in Afghanistan, finishing his last tour in 2010. Afterwards he was a different person, withdrawn, unstable, prone to violent outbursts over nothing.

Over the years things have got worse and, on occasions, he has hit me. I begged him numerous times to get help but he wouldn’t accept anything was wrong with him until I said I was leaving. Now he has a diagnosis I feel angry, and I believe we should get compensation for what he went through. He says he would have needed to apply within seven years. Is this right?

A: Whilst the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) generally requires compensation to be claimed within seven years, delayed-onset PTSD is recognised and therefore does not necessarily negate the potential for making a claim after that time. In fact, there is evidence of a significant number of veterans who have experienced delayed symptoms and diagnoses, which often get worse after they have left the disciplined environment of the military.

The AFCS provides compensation regardless of fault, meaning your husband could claim compensation for his PTSD, even if this was not caused by negligence on the part of the MOD. A specialist lawyer can help him to access the scheme.

The key to a successful claim is to establish the link between your husband’s PTSD diagnosis and his experiences in Afghanistan. Reports from the medical professionals he has seen, together with evidence of his treatment plan will help to strengthen the viability of a claim.

PTSD in military personnel who experienced the horrors of combat can have devastating and life-changing effects on both the sufferer and their family. Proving the severity of those effects will be fundamental to gaining the right level of compensation.
