Oswestry Life June 2026

Page 1

Hello June!

This month we celebrate the wonderful dads, grandads and father figures who make such a difference in our lives. Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together – maybe a family barbecue, taking a countryside walk, visiting a local café, or simply sharing a homemade card and a few heartfelt words. It’s often the small gestures that mean the most.

Wishing all the dads a happy and relaxing June.

Much-missed nurse leader honoured with award

A hugely respected nurse leader who died suddenly has been honoured with a prestigious national award from the Chief Nursing Officer for England.

Sam Young was Interim Chief Nurse at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital when she died following an accident in June last year.

Now her contribution to the nursing profession has been recognised with a special – and rare – Chief Nursing Officer for England’s Gold Award. On 6 May, the posthumous award was presented to Sam’s partner Roo in a ceremony held outdoors at the hospital. As part of the event, an Aeolian Wind Harp was also unveiled on the hospital’s Path of Positivity, recognising Sam’s lifelong love of music.

The Chief Nursing Officer’s Award is an accolade that recognises the exceptional contributions of nurses in their clinical practice, education, research, and leadership. It is presented to nurses who demonstrate excellence in various areas, including patient care,

education, research, and leadership.

Duncan Burton, the Chief Nursing Officer for England, was unable to attend, so Jacqueline Barnes, the Regional Director of Nursing for the West Midlands, made the presentation on his behalf.

The harp was then unveiled jointly by Stacey Keegan, Chief Executive at RJAH, and Roo.

Stacey said: “I miss Sam, Sam who I could talk things through with, laugh with and put the world to rights with! I miss her sense of adventure, her calming presence and her optimism.

“Sam joined us at RJAH in 2022, and from day one she demonstrated exemplary nursing leadership, supporting staff across all professions. She promoted a sense of empowerment and engagement, ensuring that everyone felt valued and heard, creating an environment where we truly put patients at the heart of everything we do. She stived for continuous improvement and was not afraid to innovate.”

Also taking part in the ceremony

was Harry Turner, the Trust’s Chair, who said: “In Sam, I saw someone who led with empathy and made a significant difference in the workplace, fostering a positive and collaborative environment.”

Speaking upon the unveiling of the wind harp, Stacey added: “will stand as a tribute to Sam, gently playing its tune whenever the wind blows. Our Path of Positivity is so popular with staff and patients alike, as it was for Sam and this sculpture will serve as a memory of her for all who pass by it.

“The plaque alongside it is inscribed with a quote from the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley: ‘I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.’

“These were words which meant so much to Sam, and which she wrote in the front of every new notebook she started at work. The poem celebrates the writer’s willpower and strength in the face of adversity. They are words which inspired and guided Sam, and now they will stand here to help others too.”

Come and Sing with Cantiones Choir

Cantiones Choir will be hosting a “Come and Sing” event at Hermon Chapel Arts on Saturday 27 June between 2pm and 5pm. The event will be led by Cantiones musical director Anthony Coup (pictured above) and the singers will work on excerpts from Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”.

There will be an interval for refreshments and homemade cake (included in the ticket price), followed by a performance of the prepared pieces. Tickets are available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ cantioneschoir and on the door.

Prior to the event Sarah Wright-Owens (vocal coach) and Stephen Owens (Pianist) will be holding singing workshops for the “Come and Sing;” these may be helpful for singers who do not yet know “Carmina Burana” and for any who would feel more confident if they attended a slower paced rehearsal prior to the main “Come and Sing”. The workshops will take place at Hermon Chapel Arts on 6 June 2026 and 13 June 2026. Further information at www.ticketsource.com/hermon-arts

Live Music Fundraiser for Hope House

On Sunday 5 July, 2pm-6pm, Gals with Guitars, a fundraising event for Hope House, is being held at Ebenezer Gallery in Cefn Mawr. With free entry, this is a unique all female performer event.

Jenny La Femme Guitare (Jenny Harris–White), a well known local female guitarist, singer songwriter, and Charity Event Organiser from Oswestry has brought together a ‘collective’ of female artists, to present a very diverse performance in aid of Hope House.

Dave Metcalfe from the Holly Bush Inn, Cefn Mawr, has very generously given the use of the delightful Ebenezer Gallery free of charge, for this very exciting adventure.

Sonya Smith is a singer songwriter, known for her emotive lyrical songs and distinctive voice. Influenced by contemporary folk and blues, she sings covers songs as well as her own.

Lauren Kynaston, the youngest performer in her 20s, is an acoustic covers singer from Oswestry. Teresa Dale sings covers, writes and performs her own material, and sings quieter romantic, soul searching numbers.

Vicki Jefferys explains, “My relatively new found love of guitar gave me the opportunity to dip my toes into the local music scene and I haven’t looked back! With an eclectic taste in music, I bring folk, rock, punk and pop songs from the 60’s to the current day.”

Ready for a Blooming Summer?

Do you take pride in how where you live or work is viewed by other people? Oswestry is a smashing town that looks even more lovely thanks to the efforts of so many people - and that could well include You. Why not showcase what you’ve done by entering this year’s Oswestry In Bloom competition? It’s open to households and businesses, schools and community groups.

It’s absolutely free, you’ll get a certificate to recognise your work, and you’ll be invited to a cheese and wine evening later in the year to mix with others just like yourselves. You can even get some tips there from some professional horticulturists.

You might say, “My garden’s nothing special.” But the competition is more than just planting plans and dazzling colour. One of last year’s awards went to Edwin Pitcher. He arranged his front garden in memory of his late wife, with a mixture of plants and ornaments. It quickly became a talking point for passing students from The Marches school. Sue Lloyd attracted attention with her vari-coloured hedges on a prominent corner plot.  And the Thomas Dental Care frontage in Lower Brook Street was praised by many for its spectacular red flowering bushes on an otherwise bare patch of land close to the busy main traffic lights in town.

Youngsters are also encouraged. Connor Robbins received the

annually presented silver trowel for his leadership in The Marches’ Gardening Club, and there are prizes for school community projects, for the tallest sunflower (there’s quite a rivalry between local primary schools!), and for specific photographic and (new this year) colouring competitions.

The multi-event organisers, Oswestry In Bloom, also plays its part in making the wider townscape tidier and more attractive. A happy band of volunteers take on a range of tasks, from helping in Cae Glas Park to weeding town centre streets, planting troughs, organising seed swaps and plant shares, maintaining open green spaces, clearing litter, and even painting town passageways that have become a little shabby. Last year also saw them work on invigorating the rather forgotten Oswald’s Well areathis included involving the public in a traditional well-dressing event. This year, with welcome support from the Oswestry & Cambrian Rotary Club, OIB is instigating the Oswestree Trail - a formal trail around Cae Glas Park with information on its many established trees.

There are various categories, including front and back gardens (whatever size), hanging baskets and wildlife areas. Commercial premises are also invited to take part, and there’s a separate shop window display category - the theme this year is Growing Together.

Under the leadership of Natalie

Bainbridge, Oswestry has achieved national recognition. A couple of years ago Oswestry was proclaimed ‘best large town’ in the national Britain In Bloom contest.  “While it’s fantastic to see Oswestry recognised on a national stage, it’s also very much about local people bonding together and making a huge difference in our wonderful town, and we’d love to see as many as possible getting involved this year,” says Mrs Bainbridge. That’s a view echoed by national In Bloom judge Gareth Manning, “Oswestry knows how to pull out all the stops, from the hardworking main committee and through the volunteers under its umbrella, and it really excels as an example of working together for the common good.”

Oswestry is entered in the Midlands heats of In Bloom once more this summer, where it’ll again face stiff competition from towns across Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, which makes its long streak of gold awards over many years all the more commendable.

Oswestry In Bloom is looking forward to YOU being part of it. Entries close at the end of June. Entry forms and further details about categories and volunteering can be found via the Oswestry in Bloom website -  oswestryinbloom. wordpress.com - its social media pages @oswestryinbloom - or email direct louisehumphreys@oswestrytc.gov.uk (01691 680222).

Remodelling Service

Our jewellery always has huge sentimental value. Wedding rings, 21st birthday gifts and inherited items from beloved relatives are all “special”…they all hold unique memories, tell stories and evoke strong emotions. With many precious metals now trading at all-time highs it’s tempting to sell or scrap those items that no longer fit, complement your other jewellery or suit the current trend. Many are choosing to liquidate the value in these items, but if selling these sentimental pieces is too painful or just feels “wrong”, there is an alternative.

Not many realize the true potential or possibilities of the old junk or broken items in their jewellery box – it’s not only VALUABLE but very RECYCLABLE! Very few jewellers have the capacity to do this. As a workshop, we’ve always offered this service. We can REMODEL your GOLD, SILVER or PLATINUM into a new wedding ring, bangle or even mini bar of bullion! So don’t scrap your old or unwanted items, REMODEL them and preserve all the sentiment and memories forever. Please call, or email, to book an appointment to discuss your options…we’re here to help!

We’re green! Unlike many, the jewellery trade has always recycled their material. The finished article, a “new” 18ct wedding ring, manufactured from 12 g of “scrap”! N 4 S MITHFIELD STREET SY11 2EG T EL EPHONE (01691) 238297

MAYOR’S MINUTES

Mayor Cllr

On 11 May, I handed the baton to the next Mayor of Oswestry. As my year drew to a close, I wanted to offer a heartfelt thank you to the residents of Oswestry for trusting me with this role, and to Oswestry Life magazine for sharing the journey.

The past few months have been full, joyful and busy — a reflection of the spirit that has shaped the whole year. I was honoured to represent our town at an investiture celebrating local recipients of the British Empire Medal, including Alison Humphreys of Connect for Life for her work supporting people living with memory loss and dementia, and Annabel Gittins for her service to young people through her leadership in library services.

One of my proudest moments was hosting my endofyear civic celebration at Hope Church — an event focused on recognition, community and gratitude. It

brought together many of the people and organisations who make Oswestry such a vibrant and caring place. Among those celebrated were Maona Cinema, Oswestry Youth Music Festival, With Love From, Oswestry Climate Action Hub, Oswestry Repair Café and Oswestry SEN Parents — all shining examples of creativity, collaboration and commitment to our town.

I was delighted to visit Our Lady Catholic Primary School to open their new forestthemed library, supported by Town Council grants. I also want to recognise the dedication of my colleagues at Oswestry Town Council; being named NALC Star Council of the Year is a welldeserved achievement.

The Oswestry Youth Music Festival has once again been a highlight — a week of performances across multiple venues, showcasing remarkable young talent and culminating in a joyful winners’ concert.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the many volunteers who work quietly behind the scenes — bringing people together, offering care and strengthening our community in ways that may not always be seen but are always felt.

Thank you for your kindness, support and community spirit. Serving as your Mayor has been the greatest privilege. As I step aside, I do so with pride, gratitude and confidence in Oswestry’s future.

ESTABLISHED IN 2007, The Oswestry Food & Drink Festival is a popular mainstay of the town’s summer calendar focussed on quality local and regional food & drink exhibitors and producers. As part of the Festival Fringe, why not enter this year’s fabulous OSWESTRY BAKE OFF competition!

Wellbeing fun with RunChums

RunChums is a fun, friendly mixed running and walking group for adults, based in and around Four Crosses, helping people improve their social and physical wellbeing. Whether you’re starting from scratch or building towards a big challenge, the group is designed to make running and walking feel welcoming and achievable. The club meets 6.30pm on Mondays.

Formed in April 2020, shortly after the pandemic, what started as a small group of friends and two leaders desperate to get back to regular activity, grew rapidly. Six years on, they have four leaders and a leader-in-training and look after around 80 members. They meet at various locations in Powys and Shropshire, which keeps it fresh, provides a diverse range of routes and scenery and ensures there’s something for everyone. The member base covers a wide area, from Ruyton XII Towns, to Marton, to Llanfair Caereinion and St Martin’s.

RunChums Co-Founder, Claire Allen says, “We introduced a walking group in 2024 to encourage more people to get out and about. This has been very successful, with walkers often asking to join the next Couch to 5K running group, or tired runners joining the walkers, so they don’t miss out on the social side and still get the benefits of fresh air and friendship.

We aim to create a relaxed, safe space where people can move more, meet others and feel good doing it.”

Unlike traditional running clubs, RunChums focuses on encouragement over performance. “It’s not about being the fastest,” says member Marcus Matthews. “It’s about showing up, having a laugh, and leaving feeling better than when you arrived. Marcus completed the 2025 C25K course and has recently smashed the Brynkinalt 10k, which is a challenging and gloriously muddy trail run.

Run sessions include interval groups for those who need walk breaks, continuous run groups for the more experienced members, with options for different paces. In addition, a 10-week C25K course is offered early each year, for new or returning runners – which definitely requires commitment. This year’s course members recently celebrated their final run at Newtown parkrun, after which they joined the regular running groups.

In addition to the Monday groups, for those wishing to improve their running skills, weekly training sessions on Wednesdays are held for those who have completed a C25K course or who are already established runners. We also offer longer runs on Friday mornings for those who want to challenge themselves to a 10k race

or beyond. often going off-road, which is a totally different dimension. This April, several members completed the Welshpool 10k, Wrexham 10k, the Virtual London Marathon and London Marathon itself.

There’s no upper age limit for members and the club has runners and walkers up to 80 and beyond. New members are supported from day one and no one is ever left behind, whether running or walking. They do ask that all applicants are able to walk briskly for 30 minutes.

If you’d like to give RunChums a try, contact them at info@runchums. co.uk You can attend two guest sessions before becoming a permanent member.

What the members say:

“I’ve found my love for running again – I’ve gone back to basics and learned how to run properly. I can’t thank you enough. Angela L I highly recommend RunChums to anyone looking to start their running journey or just wanting to be part of a friendly community. It’s been fantastic, and I look forward to continuing my running adventure with this amazing group! Annette B “I have now progressed to running 5k and 10k races and have moved up a speed group. I am so grateful to the leaders who give up their free time to encourage people like me to get moving. Sharon T

Sun City’s Sarah Adlington

I’m Sarah, the owner of Sun City Oswestry. Originally from Birmingham, I’ve spent most of my life in Shropshire and now live in a village near Oswestry with my family. I’m also a proud mum to my daughter, Lauren, who is in her final year at university studying English Literature.

Sun City has been part of the Oswestry community for 14 years, but my story with the brand began long before that. Back in 2001, I was managing a Sun City salon in Stafford whilst also overseeing another salon in Shrewsbury. When the Oswestry salon opened in 2012, it marked the beginning of something special. But it was in 2018 that the salon truly became my own. Taking the leap to buy the Oswestry salon and turn it into my own independent business was one of the biggest decisions I have made.

Today, Sun City is a thriving hub of the community, offering a range of high-quality tanning services including seven sunbeds, (lie-downs, stand-ups and infrared), whilst also stocking some of the industry’s most trusted tanning lotions: Australian Gold, Power Tan, Devoted Creations and more.

Leaving a secure job to step into the uncertainty of business ownership was not easy. There were no guarantees, no financial stability, but I had a clear vision. So, I rolled up my sleeves and set out to build the salon I had always imagined.

Owning and managing my own salon has taken me out of my comfort zone, but it has allowed me to grow immeasurably and I am proud of what I have achieved so far.

I have grown Sun City into a successful business, but what truly sets us apart is our focus on customer service and responsible tanning. I haven’t looked back, although in 2020 I did wonder if I had made the right decision during Covid as we were closed for 35 weeks! But resilience has always been a trait of mine, and so I refused to give up.

Owning Sun City has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it is not over, as I am looking forward to continuing the development of Sun City and its place within the community.

It’s that time again – holidays have been booked for months and you’re ready to pack your bags. But what are you going to wear? Mix and match with different tops, skirts and trousers and have a nice one-piece ready for the chilly evenings.

Taking your pet to Europe

If you’re driving to an EU country this summer, you may want your dog, cat – or even ferret – to come too. Just make sure you know the post-Brexit rules.

You’ll need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) each time you go to Europe or Northern Ireland. This can cost several hundred pounds, and there’s a specific process to follow:

Microchip your pet This has to be done before or at the same time as your pet is vaccinated against rabies.

Get a rabies jab for your pet A vet must administer a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, and your pet must be at least 12 weeks old to have one.

Obtain an Animal Health Certificate To get the AHC, take your pet to an “official veterinarian” (check your vet is one) with proof of its microchipping date and vaccination history. You must enter the EU within ten days. The AHC is then valid for four months.

Check if your dog needs tapeworm treatment Some countries, including Northern Ireland, Ireland, Finland and Norway, require dogs to be treated for tapeworm by a vet.

BRINGING YOU THE VERY BEST IN RAW, APPROPRIATE FOOD FOR YOUR CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS

Whether you are already a seasoned raw feeder or interested in switching your animals to a raw diet then we have everything you need and much more.

As well as our large range of top quality raw minces, chunks and bones we also supply air dried chews and natural treats as well as herbal supplements to complement a natural diet.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF RAW FEEDING:

■ Less Sensitivities ■ Great for allergy sufferers

■ Smaller less odorous poop ■ Clean teeth & breath

■ Shiny healthy coat

Treatment must be given no less than 24 hours before you arrive in your destination country and no earlier than five days.

Once all this is done, just show your AHC at the point of entry to Europe. However, dogs must be treated for tapeworm before returning from most countries.

For more information, visit www.gov.uk/taking-yourpet-abroad.

New Combination Courses! Starting September 2026

We are excited to announce our new combination courses, designed to give students flexibility, broaden their skills, and create pathways to exciting careers. These courses allow learners to mix and match subjects, gaining expertise in complementary fields while tailoring their studies to their interests and career goals.

Available Combination Pathways:

Social Sciences Pathway

Students following the Social Sciences Pathway can choose three courses from the following options:

A Level Sociology

Level 3 Applied Psychology

Level 3 Criminology

This pathway is ideal for students interested in understanding society, human behavior, and the dynamics of community and individual development. It provides a strong foundation for careers in psychology, law enforcement, social services, and public sector roles.

Health Professions Pathway

The Health Professions Pathway combines Level 3 Health and Social Care with one additional course from the Social Sciences Pathway either Pyschology or Sociology. This combination offers students both practical skills in healthcare and an understanding of human behavior, preparing them for further study or careers in nursing, social work, healthcare support, and allied health professions.

Sport and Exercise Science Pathway

The Sport and Exercise Science Pathway includes Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science along with one course from the Social Sciences Pathway either Pyschology or Sociology. This combination is perfect for students with a passion for fitness, sports, and human performance, and provides the knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in coaching, sports therapy, fitness training, and health promotion.

Blue Light Services Pathway

The Blue Light Pathway pairs Entry to Uniformed Services with one course from the Social Sciences Pathway either Pyschology or Criminology. Designed for students aiming to pursue careers in emergency services, public safety, or law enforcement, this pathway develops practical skills, teamwork, and a deep understanding of social and psychological factors relevant to uniformed services.

Why Choose a Combination Course?

Flexibility: Choose the subjects that suit your interests and career aspirations.

Interdisciplinary Skills: Gain knowledge from multiple areas, making you adaptable and employable.

Career Opportunities: Each pathway is designed with future careers in mind, giving you a competitive edge.

Engaging Learning: Mix theory with practical experience, preparing you for real-world challenges.

Our new combination courses start this September, offering a unique opportunity to explore multiple areas of study and build a tailored learning pathway for your future.

Oswestry’s Art Culture: Where to Get Creative this Summer

With the arrival of summer, it is time to get out and about again.

The good news is, if you are creatively inclined and looking for a way to spend the summer months, you need not go further than Oswestry. We are lucky enough to have a thriving art culture, countless talented artists, workshops and creative spaces people can lose themselves in.

So, if you feel like trying something new or discovering some local artwork, here are some of the creative hotspots you can escape to this summer.

When it comes to galleries, Oswestry is spoilt for choice. The town’s art displays include: The Qube (an organisation positively impacting people’s ‘quality of life’ in Shropshire and the Borderlands’) and The British Ironwork Centre (the leading metal sculpture park in the UK, boasting seventy acres of grounds).

Down Willow Street, you can also find The Willow Gallery, a showroom which has been showcasing the talent

of artists in Shropshire and Mid-Wales for the past fifteen years. Earlier in the Spring I spoke to director Anthony about The Willow’s mission and their upcoming exhibitions.

Walking into the gallery, I was met with an array of works from talented local artists. The Spring Opening Exhibition (on display at the time of my visit) featured the work of four artists from Anglesey, exploring the fine art aspects of photography. For example, photographer Sian Monument aims to create ‘an emotion of uncertainty’ in her work by exploring how ‘light and dark fall through recognisable shapes and spaces’ (see ‘Edifice’).

Also on show were a variety of pastels, oil paintings and a medium which will feature heavily in the summer exhibition: textiles (see Alison Holt’s incredible ‘Winter Forest’ created from free-motion machine embroidery on painted silk). Another particularly notable

piece was June Mclaughlin’s ‘Petal the Lamb,’ made from needle felting sheep’s wool to create the final sculptural piece.

For Anthony, this diversity is key when it comes to drawing together an artistic community. He considers the gallery to be a blank canvas for people to fill and the art of students, amateurs and professionals all decorate the Willow’s walls. The gallery’s aim is to provide a nurturing environment for artists and Anthony has been proud to see a lot of those he first supported become well known in their own right. He knows galleries can be intimidating to approach and encourages anyone interested in exhibiting to get in touch!

A key part of the Willow’s mission is helping visitors to engage with the local artists and their work. Anthony does this by holding ‘meet the maker days’ where people can talk to the exhibitors and learn the story behind each work. The gallery’s café and giftshop are also a way visitors can immerse themselves in the local art: come and get a coffee with friends whilst surrounded by the latest exhibition or take home a piece of locally made jewellery! Anthony does not want the gallery to feel like a library but a place where people can talk about the work they see.

If you are interested in getting creative yourself, the gallery runs an extensive list of workshops led by the exhibitors. The workshops generally run on a Saturday ten till four and upcoming events include ‘Character and Mood Portraits with David Bannister (13 June) and ‘Logwood Natural Dye and Foliage’ with Jane Hunter (20 June) (full list on website). All the workshops are designed for beginners. ‘No experience is needed: just bring enthusiasm and give it a go!’ Anthony told me.

Over the next couple of months, there is also a craft fair and ‘Stitch Unbound Summer 2026’ to look

Winter Forest, Freehand Machine Embroidery by Alison Holt

forward to. The Willow Gallery is truly spoiling us over the summer months.

The Borderland Visual Arts Exhibition will also be opening at the Willow on the second of May from 16:30-18:30. This will be an opportunity to meet some of the forty BVA artist members, see their fantastic work on display and find out more about the Open Studios Art Trail (taking place in and around Oswestry on the weekends of the 13 and 20 June).

I was lucky enough to have a chat with one of these artists, sculptor Bob Knowles (based in the Cambrian Studios). We spoke about his work, workshops and the importance of connecting people with their environment through creative skills.

Before our interview, I found Bob clearing litter from the hedgerows outside his studio. A big part of his work is environmental: whether this is the recycled materials he uses for his artwork or the overgrown spaces he has been clearing in the town for people to enjoy. (Yes, it was probably him who you drove past clearing the abandoned patch outside Sainsbury’s over the winter months!)

For Bob, his environmental endeavours and artwork are not that different. Either way, ‘it is about using creative skills to get people to connect with where they are and care about it.’

Indeed, much of Bob’s recent artwork has been created using foliage from within five miles of Oswestry. The evidence of a recent string making course Bob went on was everywhere to be seen in his studio. The beautiful hues of foraged willow, grass, nettles, iris and dandelion leaves could be picked out in the strings and baskets Bob had woven. A particular basket I admired had been made from the fallen branches of a one hundred- and eighty-year-old tree just a few miles away. Bob described transforming natural resources into artwork as an ‘almost mythical process.’ The important message from Bob’s work was to appreciate the magic of the everyday and the natural beauty of the local area.

Bob runs workshops on Mondays and Wednesdays and if you are interested in meeting him, you can visit his studio on one of the Open Studio weekends in June.

Also based in the Cambrian

Studios is The Claypit: pottery classes for all skill levels in a social, community space. I spoke to owner Rachel about why people should give it a try and was even inspired to go to one of the taster sessions myself!

Rachel explained to me that working with clay is a mindful practice, allowing you to escape somewhere else for a while and simply focus on the clay in your hands. There is also the bonus of chatting to like-minded people and taking home a new piece of art! It is mindful, focused and sociable.

Rachel’s students Bharti and Kate could not agree more. Bharti felt truly ‘welcomed into the ‘Claypit’ family; attending the classes ‘fills my soul with joy!’ For Kate, the Claypit is a ‘wonderful, mindful place;’ Rachel

‘encourages, guides and makes all your ideas happen irrespective of your skill or abilities.’

For those feeling a little apprehensive to try something new, Rachel says to come and have a chat during one of the open studio weekends. It is a chance to suss out the space and meet the friendly faces at the Claypit. The classes are tailored so students can make ‘the Claypit journey:’ complete beginner to full-fledged creator. Beginners can come to one of Rachel’s weekend taster sessions (which I can highly recommend after attending one this month!) or jump straight in with a six-week course. There are general pottery, hand building and throwing courses to choose from and family sessions once a month on a Saturday! There is something for everyone at the Claypit and it is definitely worth a visit this summer.

There you have it, just a few of the many creative spaces you can visit over the summer months. It has been a pleasure talking to some of the town’s creative minds and the upcoming Open Studios Art Trail is an excellent opportunity to meet them!

Alongside the artists, galleries, and workshops I have featured, there are many more spaces, workshops and events in Oswestry: ‘Under One Roof’ and ‘Girlies Get Creative’ just to name a couple.

So, what are you waiting for…? Time to dive in!

The most Perfect Pasties have landed in Oswestry!

Delicious award winning Cornish pasties and sausage rolls have landed on the corner of Willow Street. Based in a shop opposite Pearl Dental Practice, Perfect Pasties is run by Liz, who’s married to Ben, both newcomers to Oswestry but having happily relocated to the area very recently.

The shop is Liz’s passion, who wanted to open the Cornish pasty coffee shop but have it including a softplay area for parents with young children. The softplay upstairs has already been a hit with lots of parents stopping by for a ‘hands free’ coffee and bite to eat.

Liz’s background is as a Level 4 Nursery Practioner, which is where the drive for the softplay area comes from. So, Liz took training before they moved here, from someone she knew who already owned a coffee shop, showing her the ropes and telling her everything she needed to know and do to deliver delicious food and coffee.

All the sausage rolls, breakfast turnovers and award winning pasties are made in Cornwall and shipped up to Oswestry, meaning you won’t get any pockets of air, they’re full of flavour and they keep you full until your next meal! What makes a real Cornish pasty? Well, the ingredients have to be sourced in Cornwall and they must also be made there. You’re also going to find a brand of ethically sourced coffee that no-one else sells in town, with a lovely smooth flavour – 100 House Coffee.

This is the only shop in town with a hot counter, meaning all the hot food is cooked on site and kept hot, and not left to cool down during

the day. You’re really going to get a hot snack on demand. And if that’s not enough, Liz also sells the pasties frozen so you can always take a couple of flavours home with you for another day. So many options, where do we start! Although the shop only opened a few months ago, they now have regulars coming back for more and even some will take up a seat and bring a laptop to get some work done.

Did you know: there’s additional seating upstairs as well as the separate softplay area for parents and children?

Own a dog? Perfect Pasties is dog friendly so feel free to take along your furry friend.

Drop by the shop for a coffee or pasty at 6 Willow Street, Oswestry. Liz and Ben look forward to seeing you!

Food for Thought

Hello, carrying on from last month’s top tips I have included a list of useful hacks to help you cut down on food waste.

• Plan ahead – Think about what you want to cook during the week ahead, this helps to make a list before you go shopping to deter overbuying. However, if you do buy extras, don’t worry, these can be used in future meals.

• Don’t throw away your leftovers: add them to soups, casseroles, omelettes, bubble and squeak or stir frys

• Batch cook: make one large amount and then separate into smaller portions which can be frozen and used for future meals. Using a slow cooker will make this energy efficient too.

• Portion control: cook what you need and what you know you will be able to consume. This will reduce waste and will help to make your cooking more energy efficient.

• Check vegetables and fruit at supermarkets before buying – check for firmness and colour. Newest items will last and stay fresher longer.

• Beware of ready meals. They may save time but generally are more expensive and less nutritious.

Now that summer is upon us, you may be able to buy, (or harvest) gluts of fruits and vegetables. Think about making jams and chutneys, using fruit such as strawberries or tomatoes. Search for a recipe and enjoy making something from scratch. Great as a gift or just enjoy it at home.

My name is Bex and I work at OsNosh, which is all about preventing food waste either through a share table or cooking delicious food in our café. We open Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.30 till 1.30 pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

berry nests Mini summer berry nests

At their most flavourful – and abundant – during June and July, sweet and succulent strawberries combine with other soft fruits in these irresistible treats.

Makes 12

Preparation time About 30 minutes

Cooking time 6-8 minutes

INGREDIENTS

• 50g butter

• 1 x 270g pack of 6 frozen filo pastry sheets (defrosted) – use 3 sheets

• 150ml double cream

• 1 x 400g tin low-fat ready-made custard

• Grated rind of 1/2 orange and 1 tbsp juice

• 3 tbsp strawberry jam

• 450g mixed berries (whole raspberries and blueberries, and strawberries, halved or quartered)

• Icing sugar, sifted, to decorate

METHOD

1. 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4.

2. 2. Warm the butter in a small saucepan until melted and use a little to grease a 12-hole deep muffin tin. Separate the pastry sheets and brush each one with butter, then cut into 12 rectangles.

3. 3. Lay one piece in each section of the muffin tin, then arrange a second and third piece, each at a slight angle to the previous one, to give a jagged, nest-like effect.

4. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 6-8 minutes until golden and crisp. Leave in the tin to cool.

5. 5. When cooled, carefully take the pastry cases out of the tin and arrange on a large serving platter. Whip the cream until it forms soft swirls, then fold in the custard and orange rind. Spoon into the filo cases.

6. 6. Warm the jam and orange juice in a small saucepan, stirring until the jam has melted. Add the berries and coat with the jam glaze, then spoon into the nests. Dust the top edges of the pastry nests with a little sifted icing sugar and serve.

The health benefits of spending time in nature are well documented and include improving your mood and reduced feelings of stress or anger. This helps you to be more active which improves your physical health and can reduce loneliness by meeting new people in your local community.

As Summer approaches why not get out and soak up some of the health benefits with some local events such as:

Social Media vs Real Fitness

In Coach House Fitness’ last contribution to Oswestry Life Magazine (Issue 109, May 2026), my colleague Liam spoke about what a “gym-goer” looks like and why diversity in a gym is so important. He mentioned overhearing someone say, “He doesn’t even look like he goes to the gym.” That comment stayed with me. It made me think about where these attitudes come from and the impact they can have.

It’s difficult to ignore the role social media has played. Alongside the rise of online platforms has come a growing “fitness influencing culture”. What started as people sharing their training for fun quickly became something far more commercial. Fitness became marketing, and with thousands competing for attention, advice began flooding our feeds from every angle, and not always from qualified or trustworthy sources.

So how do people stand out online amongst the

thousands? Usually not by showing average results, but by presenting a polished version of reality. Lighting, angles, filters, editing and timing (whether it’s dehydration or training for a “pump”) all shape how physiques are displayed online. What we often see is not everyday progress, but a carefully selected highlight reel.

When this becomes our idea of what a “gymgoer” should look like, expectations can become distorted. Real progress, such as improved strength, energy, confidence and overall health, can start to feel underwhelming, despite being genuinely life changing.

This isn’t to say social media is entirely negative. It has helped increase awareness of fitness and contributed to rising gym participation across the UK. But it’s important to recognise the difference between online presentation and reality.

If you want sustainable, supported progress, my advice is simple: speak to a qualified professional who can help you set realistic goals and celebrate genuine achievements along the way. At Coach House Fitness, every new member is offered a one-to-one consultation and a bespoke training programme tailored to their needs. Visit coachhousefitness.net to find out more.

Stepping Away to Move Forward

I recently took a bit of a holiday from my life. I’d realised I was going in circles with the same “problems”, trying to solve them with the same thinking. There’s a quote that says something like, the mind that creates the problem can’t be the one to solve it. So, I decided to change my mind, by changing the input.

I went to Portugal for three weeks and did a WorkAway (voluntary work in exchange for room and board), swapping my usual routine for something completely different. New place, new people, different

SHREWSBURYOFFICENOWOPEN

“My

conversations. Using my body more than my mind. Being outside instead of behind a screen. Giving my mind new problems to solve and fresh perspectives to play with.

And it worked. I came back feeling lighter, inspired and motivated. I don’t know fully what’s next, but I’m excited for it.

Before the trip, I felt stuck. In limbo. Now, something has shifted and started flowing again.

The experience reminded me of the power of stepping away. I’m a big proponent of this. If I’m struggling to see a solution, I step away from the problem - usually for a walk (it’s amazing the clarity and calm a walk can bring). This was simply a bigger version of the same idea.

Not everyone can take off for a few weeks, but the principle is the same: do something different. Give your mind something new to play with.

It might be as simple as going for a walk, taking a different route, listening to something unfamiliar, learning a new skill, or meeting new people. The new and the different nudge your brain into working in fresh ways, shifting your perspective, your energy and your sense of what’s possible. And sometimes, that’s all it takes for things to start flowing again.

Trypanophobia from the Greek for borer and fear

What is the difference between normal fear and a phobia? If you’re one of the 15% of us who suffer from a phobia then you know the answer only too well. Fear is a natural response to threat: phobias are irrational, persistent and extreme anxiety responses to a specific object or situation. Trypanophobia, or needle phobia, affects 10% of us and often prevents the person accessing medical care they would benefit from.

Often treatment involves a desensitisation process which might start with a simple discussion and an exploration of the thought processes behind the phobia, moving on to a graduated list, perhaps pictures of needles, then handling needles, perhaps observation of needle use etc and the use of techniques to defuse the body reaction and anxiety. Common phobias include arachnophobia (spiders), acrophobia (heights), agoraphobia (open spaces), aerophobia (flying) and social phobias triggered by specific social situations. As you can see there are a lot of words derived from

the ancient Greeks who must have been an easily frightened lot!

When I was in the RAF I saw a discharge letter from the doctor who had been desensitising an aircraft technician with a spider phobia. It was short: “I think this patient has responded well to our treatment. He brought his pet tarantula with him to today’s appointment!”

People are often embarrassed by their phobia and particularly by the anxiety accompanying it. This often involves dizziness, over-breathing, sweating, heart pounding, feeling sick or vomiting, trembling and faints or collapse. Not surprisingly people avoid the trigger and this then reinforces the anxiety and limits their lives. The first step is to talk to someone about the situation – after that there are many treatment options which normally involve successful talking therapies and, quite rarely, some medications. There are a number of webbased resources but be careful that these do not involve triggers for your phobia. The website www.keepingwell. nwl.nhs.uk seems to be useful.

HOW ARE YOUR FINANCES LOOKING SIX MONTHS IN?

When you look back over the past six months, do you feel that your finances are moving in the right direction?

If you find yourself thinking ‘I don’t actually know’, you’re not alone. We often begin the year with good intentions, but as time passes it’s easy to lose track of how everything is shaping up – even when you have a plan in place.

Markets move, interest rates change, and personal circumstances rarely stand still.

That’s why many financial planners recommend a mid-year review.

For some people, this will simply be about checking that everything is still doing what it should. Are your investments performing as expected? Do they still reflect your goals and attitude to risk? Have you started using your allowances and tax planning? You might even want to revisit your pension contributions or emergency savings to make sure they’re still at the right level. Plans and portfolios naturally move around as things change, so it makes sense to see if any tweaks are needed.

For others, the last six months may have brought changes. A different job, a shift in income, or new priorities at home can all affect how your finances should be structured. If so, looking at how these impact your plan is important for maintaining a financial strategy that works for you now.

And if you didn’t get round to putting a plan in place at the start of the year, there’s still time to make meaningful progress.

All of this can be difficult to assess on your own. That’s where a conversation with an independent financial planner can really help. It gives you the chance to talk things through properly, understand your current position and decide what needs to change.

If you’d like to review what comes next, you can speak to Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554.

This guide is for information purposes and does not constitute financial advice, which should be based on your individual circumstances. The value of investments and pensions and any income from them can fall as well as rise. You may not get back the full amount invested.

Celebrating 21 Years of Engineering Success in Oswestry

An Oswestry-based manufacturing company is marking its 21st year in business with the launch of a new advanced X-ray imaging inspection service aimed at supporting both its own production operations and businesses across the wider electronics industry.

IS Fusion Ltd has invested in a state-of-the-art Seamark PCB X5600 X-ray inspection system at its Oswestry factory, strengthening quality control procedures for the company’s intrinsically safe fuse products while opening the door to commercial imaging and inspection services for external customers.

The company, which has built a strong reputation for specialist fuse manufacturing, says the new technology represents a significant step forward in its long-term growth strategy.

Liz Hindmarch, Managing Director, at IS Fusion said the investment reflects the company’s continued commitment to innovation, precision engineering and customer confidence.

The newly installed Seamark PCB X5600 system uses high-resolution X-ray imaging technology to inspect electronic assemblies and components in minute detail, allowing engineers to identify hidden soldering faults, voids, cracks, bonding issues and manufacturing defects that cannot be detected through conventional visual inspection methods.

The system will play a central role in quality assurance for IS Fusion’s intrinsically safe fuse range, products widely used in hazardous and safety-critical environments where reliability and compliance are essential.

As well as supporting internal manufacturing standards, IS Fusion is now offering specialist X-ray imaging and inspection services to other manufacturers and electronics companies seeking independent analysis, fault investigation and production quality verification.

The advanced imaging system is capable of inspecting a wide variety of electronic and industrial components, including SMT assemblies, semiconductors, BGAs, LEDs, automotive electronics, battery technologies and photovoltaic components.

Features include automated void ratio calculations,

infrared navigation and positioning, multiple operating modes and customised software algorithms capable of identifying issues such as broken wires, component offsets and dimensional inconsistencies.

The investment comes during a milestone year for the company as IS Fusion celebrates more than two decades of trading from its Shropshire base.

Over the past 21 years, the business has continued to evolve from a specialist fuse manufacturer into a broader provider of electronic manufacturing and technical support services, supplying customers across multiple industries in the UK and overseas.

My dad died without a Will. Do I and my step-siblings divide the estate between us?

Q: My mother died a few years ago and my father has recently passed away. I have one biological sibling and two step siblings (from my mother, not my father). My father, however, treated all of us exactly the same and raised all four of us as his own. I do not think he left a Will, although I do not know where to start. If he did not leave a Will, can I assume that the estate is to be divided equally between the four of us children?

A: You should first establish whether your father left a Will or not, as if he left a Will you would carry out his wishes. However, if he did not leave a Will the intestacy provision would prevail. The intestacy rules decide where the estate passes in the absence of a Will. If your father did not formally adopt your step-siblings, then the intestacy rules would determine that his estate is divided only between his biological children, meaning that your step-siblings would not receive anything from the estate.

You may first wish to carry out a Will search to see if one exists. You would not want to divide the estate as per the intestacy rules and then later find out there was a Will, as the beneficiaries of the Will might then make a claim, which would impact you.

Even if no Will was made, if you and your stepsiblings were all on the same page and all agreed to divide the estate between the four of you, this could be achieved through a deed of variation. However, if this is the case you should speak with a solicitor as soon as you can and act fast, as there are important timelines to consider, particularly when the issue of inheritance and capital gains tax arises.

Money matters

P11D season is approaching – and employers should not leave it too late

As summer approaches, many employers will be thinking about holidays, year-end admin and planning ahead. But there is another date worth circling in the diary: the deadline for reporting employee benefits and expenses.

If your business provides staff with benefits in kind – such as company cars, private medical insurance, low-interest loans or other perks – these may need to be reported to HMRC each year. It is one of those compliance tasks that can easily slip down the to-do list but missing it can prove expensive.

For the 2025–26 tax year, employers must report expenses and benefits to HMRC, and give employees the relevant details, by 6 July 2026. The same deadline applies for submitting form P11D(b), which is used to declare the total Class 1A National Insurance due, unless all benefits have been dealt with through payroll.

After that comes the payment deadline. Class 1A National Insurance must be paid by 22 July 2026, or

by 19 July if payment is made by cheque. Employers with a PAYE Settlement Agreement have until 22 October 2026 to pay any tax and Class 1B National Insurance due, or 19 October if paying by cheque.

Some employers now choose to payroll benefits, which means the tax and Class 1 National Insurance are collected through the payroll during the year. That can simplify matters, but it does not remove the need for care and accurate records.

Keeping clear supporting paperwork is just as important as meeting the deadlines. Employers should be able to back up the figures reported, including how benefits were valued. In some cases, exemptions can reduce what needs to be reported, but they should be checked carefully.

The key message is simple: start early. Late P11D(b) forms can trigger penalties of £100 per 50 employees for each month or part month they are overdue, with interest and further penalties possible on late payments.

Meet the team at Lanyon Bowdler: Angharad Hird

From wanting to save the world to helping people through some of the toughest moments of their lives, Angharad Hird took a quick break from her role as a private client solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler to share her thoughts about her job and working in Oswestry.

How do you help people in your job?

I help people navigate some of life’s most difficult and important moments. This could be dealing with the loss of a loved one, planning for the future, or making sure their wishes are carried out properly. A big part of my role is making complex legal and tax matters feel manageable and giving clients reassurance during what can often be an overwhelming time.

How did you get to where you are today? I followed the traditional route into law, starting with a law degree, before briefly branching off to complete

a Masters in Human Rights Law, which was fuelled by my desire to save the world! I then returned to a more conventional path by completing the Legal Practice Course, and a training contract. I found that I particularly enjoyed Private Client work which is where I qualified into.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The people. Every client’s situation is different, and you are trusted with very personal matters. It’s incredibly rewarding to know you’ve helped make a difficult process smoother or given someone peace of mind for the future.

Where is your favourite lunch spot in Oswestry?

I’m spoilt for choice with Oswestry’s independent cafes, but on a sunny day my favourite “spot” is actually the park opposite the Lanyon Bowdler office. Either with a takeaway sandwich, or most likely a slice of cake! The perfect opportunity to have some fresh air and switch off for a little while.

If you could change one thing about Oswestry, what would it be?

It’s a great place to work, but if I had to pick something it would probably be to improve the traffic flow out of town at the end of the day. Overall, it has a strong sense of community, which is hard to beat.

Contemporary Coastal Style

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t capture that feeling of carefree, holiday happiness in your home. Bright, sunny days, a fresh breeze, no clutter, no worries – this look takes traditional coastal style and adds a modern twist.

Colours of the coast

Colour plays a leading role, with white (or off-white) as the foundation, used generously across walls, ceilings and perhaps on floorboards. Blue, too, is key – in easy-to-live-with, washed-out hues and sometimes verging towards turquoise. Instead of stark contrasts, contemporary coastal includes a spectrum of in-between colours, such as chalky greys, warm beiges, sandy taupes and muted greens.

Introduce natural materials

Today’s version of coastal style is likely to focus on natural timber, woven rattan or wicker, and coir, jute or sisal. Add elements of ceramic, glass (including sea glass) and brushed metal, and unfussy fabrics. Linen is breathable, sustainable and lovely for loose covers, relaxed curtains and laid-back bedding. Muslin and lightweight cottons add to the sense of softness, and ticking stripes have a timeless feel with a little more structure. More important than pattern is texture.

Why light matters

Maximise natural light by keeping window treatments minimal. The aim is to let light wash through the space as much as possible. Look for sheer curtains, barelythere blinds or wooden shutters with louvres. And when the sun has set, opt for a layered approach to artificial lighting that introduces pools of warm, ambient light. A mix of pendants, wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps, some controlled by a dimmer switch or using a smart lamp for flexibility, is ideal. Choose simple styles with clean outlines made from natural materials.

Furniture and more

Choose furniture that is simple yet refined, with generous, comfortable proportions. Don’t be afraid to mix and match (but do avoid overcrowding), creating a look that is organic and evolved. A deep sofa might, for example, sit alongside a reclaimed-wood side table, or a sleek 1960s sideboard with a rattan armchair.

Finally, position a few carefully chosen accessories, including beautiful artworks, whether originals or prints. Think too about how they’re framed. Structural house plants, a blue-and-white ceramic dish, a wool throw and hand-blown glassware can create the right atmosphere.

New property concierge service takes the stress out of selling your home

They say that it’s one of the most stressful things you will do in your life, but The Property Experts are here to tear up the estate agency rule book.

If you’ve sold a home before, you’ll know the feeling. You sign up with an agent, a different person does the valuation, another handles the viewings, and by the time you’re chasing for an update, you’re not even sure who to call. It’s a frustration that has become so common that most people simply accept it as part of the process, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Morgan Nunns, a coach and marketing expert, is set to help take away the stress and uncertainty of property buying and selling with his new business, The Property Experts - a national network operating across the UK, and it’s launching this June in Oswestry.

Your personal property concierge service

Essentially, this bespoke estate agency service puts one person in charge of everything from start to finish. Every client gets a dedicated expert who knows their property, their situation, and their timeline. The network carries close to 5,000 five-star reviews nationally and has an open house strategy with an 87% success rate.

“With a traditional agency, your property is just one of many on a board. I work with a limited number of clients at a time, so I can actually give each home the attention it deserves,” explains Morgan, whose background in investment and deal structuring alongside his agency work makes him well placed to think creatively when a standard sale isn’t quite the right fit.

“It’s not just about a straightforward listing, either”, he adds. “I also work with homeowners who need more flexible solutions - whether that’s a quicker-than-usual sale, help navigating a difficult chain, or simply exploring options they didn’t know they had.”

In addition, Morgan brings local knowledge, knowing the streets, the schools, the community, and what buyers in this area are really looking for, having lived in the area for 45 years.

Shaking up the selling process

Continuity and trust lie at the heart of this model, and this is what bridges the gap between what The Property Experts provide and the traditional, more disjointed estate agency experience. Rather than repeating your situation to multiple people or waiting days for a response, clients deal directly with Morgan throughout from the first conversation to completion. Not only does this save time, but it also removes much of the uncertainty that typically surrounds property transactions. “Some people just want a straightforward sale handled properly. Others have a more complicated situation. Either way, I’d rather have an honest conversation about what’s actually going to work for them.”

All-round expertise

Drawing on his background in coaching, Morgan also understands that selling a home isn’t purely a financial decision. “There is so much emotional weight involved.

People might be moving on to the next chapter, downsizing, or dealing with unexpected life changes,” he says. “Having that one go-to person can be a relief for many clients. The whole process is so stressful, and the traditional methods just aren’t in keeping with expectations,” he says. “I take a proactive approach that aligns with how today’s buyers search, view, and make decisions.”

Presentation is also key. Morgan ensures each property is positioned to stand out, using targeted strategies designed to attract the right buyers rather than simply listing and leaving. “Some people just want a straightforward sale handled properly. Others have a more complicated situation. Either way, I’d rather have an honest conversation about what’s actually going to work for them.”

In a market where service can sometimes feel transactional, this more tailored, people-first model offers something refreshingly different for Oswestry homeowners.

The Property Experts launches in Oswestry this June. To mark the opening, Morgan is offering free, no-obligation market appraisals for anyone curious about what their property is worth in the current market - with no pressure, and no hard sell. If you want a no obligation discussion about how to sell your property with less stress and better outcomes, get in touch with Morgan at morgan.nunns@ thepropertyexperts.co.uk or via WhatsApp on 07861144070

June in the garden

June is one of the busiest months in the garden, but it’s also among the most rewarding. With longer days and warmer temperatures, growth accelerates, and attention is needed across flower beds, vegetable plots and greenhouses alike. Regular care is essential at this time of year to keep everything healthy, productive and under control.

As plants grow taller and fuller, make sure they are well supported to prevent damage from wind or their own weight. Deadhead flowers frequently to encourage continued blooming and take a moment while doing so to check for pests. Aphids, if spotted early, can often be dealt with simply by wiping them off before they become a problem.

This is a satisfying time for harvesting early crops such as strawberries, broad beans, lettuce and early potatoes. Alongside harvesting, continue sowing quickgrowing vegetables like lettuce, beetroot and carrots to ensure a steady supply through the season. If you have not already done so, now is the time to plant out tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans and sweetcorn, as the risk of frost has passed.

When it comes to general garden maintenance, a little

effort done often is the most effective approach. Keep on top of weeding and water only when necessary. During dry spells, raise the cutting height of your lawn mower; this reduces stress on the grass and means you will not need to mow as frequently.

If space allows, consider leaving part of your garden to grow wild. Long grass and wildflowers provide valuable habitats for pollinators and other wildlife, and allowing herbs to flower is another excellent way to attract beneficial insects. Fresh water is always welcome, but it should be kept clean and topped up regularly. Current advice suggests pausing the use of seed and peanut bird feeders over summer to reduce the risk of disease such as trichomonas. However, small amounts of fat balls, suet or mealworms can still be offered safely.

12 months on the Plot

Twelve months ago, I took on an allotment that can only politely be described as “a bit of a project.”

And by “a bit of a project,” I mean an overgrown patch that needed serious clearing before I could even begin imagining vegetables. There were brambles, weeds, mystery plants and enough rubble to make me question whether I’d accidentally signed up for demolition rather than a hobby.

I remember thinking about raised beds, pumpkins climbing arches, rows of sweetcorn and homegrown flowers, while staring at land that looked more suited to hiding abandoned wheelbarrows than growing food.

But somehow, twelve months later, we’re here.

This May feels like a turning point because the allotment feels like what I imagined it could be.

The beds are built. The paths are mostly visible. Plants are going into the ground rather than sitting hopefully in trays waiting for me to “sort the plot first.” There are onions and garlic growing, peas scrambling upwards, brassicas settling in, and sweetcorn waiting for warmer days. Even the pumpkin arch experiment is underway — ambitious? Possibly. Optimistic? Always.

But just because the plants are finally in the ground doesn’t mean the work suddenly stops. Whether it’s an allotment or a few raised beds in the garden, it’s a constant job. There is always weeding to do, watering to remember, plants needing tying in, slugs plotting against you and seedlings demanding attention.

Of course, it hasn’t all gone smoothly. There have been plants that refused to thrive, seeds that vanished

without explanation and moments where the weather has laughed in my face. But I think that’s part of the joy.

An allotment teaches you quickly that progress doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes it happens one cleared patch, one raised bed and one surviving seedling at a time.

And now, a year on, I can finally stand on my little plot and see less of the chaos and more of the dream coming to life.
