This is when our historic market town really comes to life. Twinkling lights above, festive stalls, and so many events to go to in the run up to the big day. Lots of opportunities this year to take the kids to see Santa: Park Hall Farm, The Ironworks, Cambrian Heritage Railway, Santa’s Village, The Highwayman.
The Oswestry Life team, David, Tracy, Victoria, Aileen, Paul and Graham would like to wish all readers, advertisers and contributors, a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Oswestry Team Tennis Celebrates This Year’s Young Tennis Talent
On Saturday 8 November, Oswestry Team Tennis, held their annual awards evening to celebrate Oswestry’s finest young tennis talent. Oswestry Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Jonathon Upton, attended to present the trophies and Tennis2You Director and Head Coach at Oswestry Team Tennis, Blake Strefford, was the ‘Master of Ceremonies’.
Club Chairman, Clive Knight commented, “It was fantastic to see so many families having fun and for our club to celebrate our young tennis players. The club wishes to thank everyone who supported the evening with donations and raffle prizes including Oswestry Framing, Booka Bookshop, Milanos, Coach House Fitness, Meraki, TNS, Heatwave Hair, The Bailey Head and Morrisons. Also, we’d like to thank Midac Batteries and Richard Burbidge Ltd who helped to pay for the event.
Blake adds, “Oswestry Team Tennis is predominantly a junior club; however we also offer coaching to adults of all ages and abilities and this year we have introduced walking tennis for those with limited mobility and a special cardio tennis session for 14-18 years olds, partly funded by Oswestry Town Council. Everyone is welcome at our club.”
For information on the club, please email oswestryteamtennis@ outlook.com or visit the website at www.oswestryteamtennis.co.uk.
Deck the stalls –Friends Christmas Bazaar awaits
The League of Friends to The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) is delighted to announce the return of their highly anticipated annual Christmas event, taking place on Friday 5 December, from 9am until 3pm in the main entrance of RJAH.
Entry to the event is free of charge.
This year’s event embraces the charming theme of gingerbread men, promising a festive celebration filled with fun and fundraising for a great cause.
Visitors will enter a magical winter wonderland featuring themed decor and a variety of local festive stalls offering unique gifts, handcrafted items, jewellery, and seasonal treats.
Festive delights await at the Coffee Shop, with offerings such as luxury gingerbread hot chocolates, chai lattes, and a selection of treats. For heartier appetites, Denbigh’s Restaurant will serve a delicious array of holiday meals to warm your spirits.
The Christmas spirit will come alive with live performances, including carols by local schoolchildren and a special festive performance by the renowned Ladies Orthopaedic Choir.
Adding to the magic, Father Christmas will make an appearance, thanks to the support of the Rotary Club of Oswestry and Cambrian.
Victoria Sugden, Friends CEO, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from our local community, vendors, and volunteers, whose generosity makes this event possible.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone for a day of festive fun and celebration while raising vital funds for the hospital.”
Junior Parade now included in Oswestry Illuminated Tractor Run
This year the Junior Parade is taking place on Saturday 13 December and entries are by 3pm.
They are looking for any children up to the age of 10, on any illuminated ride-on toy (pedal or battery), to take part in our Junior Parade that will take place undercover in one of the market buildings. Judging will be done by Santa who will present a beautiful toy tractor, donated by the Wynnstay Store in Glovers Meadow, Oswestry to the winner. All entrants will be given a certificate to take home.
To give every child the opportunity to take part, there will be a few additional illuminated ride-on toys for them to use so they can also enjoy themselves. Entry is on the day at the market and is a £5 cash donation to Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.
The Oswestry Illuminated Tractor Run is the main event and leaves the Oswestry Livestock Market at 5pm. They will be mustered by 3.30pm to give the public the opportunity to go around up to 100 illuminated tractors and meet the local farmers. Then travel 38 noisy miles through Oswestry and Morda, through local towns and villages, returning through Oswestry again to return to the Livestock Market about 8.15pm (ish). Some limited free parking is available at the market. Information available on the Facebook page @OswestryIlluminatedTractorRun.

Oswestry In Bloom Committee
Oswestry’s Michelle raises thousands skydiving for Hope House
Local, Michelle Lloyd has overcome her fear of heights and leapt from a plane, raising thousands for Hope House children’s hospice in memory of her friend’s son.
Michelle took on the skydive at Tilstock Airfield, near Whitchurch, jumping from a plane at 13,000ft. “My friend’s son Thierry was born sleeping when she was 39 weeks pregnant and they were supported by Hope House, and I know how much the vital care their offer for local families is. It was thinking about Thierry that got me on that plane and up into the sky.”
As she parachuted through the air, Michelle saw a perfect circular rainbow. “It was quite something. Whenever we see a rainbow we think about Thierry, but to see that in the clouds during the skydive was amazing and I thought – that’s Thierry.”
More GOLD for Oswestry
Oswestry has been awarded GOLD in the Large Town Category at the annual RHS Britain In Bloom awards highlighting its community involvement and support from local organisations. Natalie Bainbridge, chair of Oswestry In Bloom, stressed the importance of volunteers and encouraged more people to join future efforts.
The annual awards were held recently in Brighton. Following strong support from the Heart of England judges last year, Oswestry advanced to the national finals and secured Gold in the Large Town category. The achievement was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry BID, local organisations, and dedicated volunteers.
The awards, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), recognise community groups that enhance their local environments through horticultural, environmental, and community initiatives.
Oswestry received several accolades: Gold for Oswestry In
Bloom, Gold for Cae Glas Park, and a special award for Natalie Bainbridge. “Outstanding” awards were also presented to CROP (Cambrian Railways Orchard Project), OsNosh, and The Derwen in the “In Your Neighbourhood” categories. Oswestry has now achieved Gold for 17 consecutive years at the Heart of England awards.
Michelle has raised an amazing £4,600 for Hope House, which has largely come from sponsorship from customers and colleagues at the Stonehouse Brewery. You can still donate to Michelle’s page by visiting www.justgiving.com/page/ michellelloyd
During the judges’ visit in August, they toured the town’s floral displays and met with various organisations. The diversity and commitment of these groups, particularly the involvement of young people, left a strong impression. The focus of In Bloom has evolved from primarily horticultural to community-driven, an area where Oswestry excels.
Oswestry In Bloom Chair Natalie Bainbridge commented, “Winning this award is a testament to the dedication and cooperation of everyone involved. From individual efforts to large community projects,
every contribution matters. Our continued success depends on expanding participation and building on these achievements. The strength of Oswestry lies in its community and volunteers.”

Morda Primary School Receives Grant & Donation
Morda Primary School has received a £10,000 grant from the Wesleyan Foundation and a huge donation from Jewsons in Oswestry to transform an area of their playground.
Over time, part of the playground became unusable for the children with overgrown trees and uneven ground. So, on 9 October, Andy Banks from Jewson and both Wesleyan and Practice Plan (owned by Wesleyan) colleagues volunteered to start the work, spending the day at the school, building, painting, digging and regenerating the area.
Head of School, Helen Chapman explained, “The updated area will be calm, safe and a peaceful outdoor learning space. This will be especially important for the children with sensory needs who find the playground overwhelming and too loud. Classes will be able to work outside and use the space. All who have come to help today have been amazing.”
The Y6 school council, Holly,
Imogen, Benj and Jac came out to inspect the ongoing works and show support for the volunteers. They helped design how they wanted the area to be used and how they wanted it to look.
The school wish to thank Andy Banks from Jewsons who donated the membrane for the ground and all the wood chipping. He also took the time to remove the old, loose surface and prep it, saving the school a lot of time.
The school also thanks the Wesleyan Group, because without the grant, the school wouldn’t have been able to make improvements to the space due to the soaring costs of materials and manpower.
Jacob Ayre, Community & Citizenship Manager at Wesleyan said, “At Wesleyan, we’re passionate about supporting education and helping young people reach their full potential. Morda School plays a vital role in the local community, and we’re thrilled that the Wesleyan
Foundation’s donation can help them continue providing a positive, nurturing environment for their pupils.”

Heartfelt Goodbye, Without the High Cost.
Because a meaningful ceremony shouldn’t be out of reach after direct cremation. Many families choose direct cremation for its affordability, often feeling that a full ceremony is simply too expensive. But what if you could have a beautifully personal and dignified tribute for just a few hundred pounds? I work with families like yours to create intimate ceremonies for when you gather the ashes – a true celebration of life, free from the pressure of traditional funeral costs.

FROM SUMMER SUNSHINE TO WINTER LIGHTS
What a busy and inspiring few months it has been in Oswestry! I had the joy of starting the Oswestry 10K, with over 1,500 runners and countless supporters cheering from start to finish. My thanks to Alan Lewis and the Adrenaline Sports team for creating such a supportive, caring environment.
One visit that stayed with me was to the Oswestry SEN Parents CIC team during half-term. Volunteers there provide incredible support — for some families a lifeline, for others guidance, and for many a moment to pause and breathe. Thank you to Stripe and the team for welcoming me so warmly.
Pin T Massageong
I was equally inspired by presenting Gold, Silver, and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Derwen College. Meeting students overcoming daily challenges to achieve their awards was heartwarming — their resilience is remarkable. Founders’ Day at Oswestry School, marking an incredible 616 years, was another highlight. The service was both moving and inspiring, especially hearing Chris Symonds, the longest-serving teacher, reflect on his 43 years of dedication to the school community — a true example of passion and commitment.
Remembrance Sunday was a day of reflection and I was proud once again to stand at the Park Gates for the service. I also look forward to the Christmas lights switch-on, Christmas Live, Christmas Parade, and the illuminated tractor run. Our volunteers support every aspect of our community. They light up the world when it seems dark, add a little sparkle to our local environment, and bring joy to all generations seeking friendship and connection — so thank you to you all. Therapeutic & Relaxing Massages
On 16th October, Youth Awareness Day, I was proud to encourage local schools to raise awareness of the challenges young people face today — a wonderful celebration of youth and community spirit.

HELPING YOUR PETS TO SURVIVE THE FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS
We may not realise it but the festive season can be very stressful for our pets. Celebrations often bring busy, noisy gatherings and disrupted routines to households, which can affect our furry friends detrimentally.
Dogs, cats, rabbits etc experience stress when their routine is changed. Bringing out the decorations, or having extra visitors in the home may cause them to get irritable, hyperactive, vocal or disruptive, and we will need to offer extra support to help them cope.
Some pets can get snappy or try to hide away. Children act differently to adults and they may be frightening to pets that aren’t used to being around them. The same is true about elderly visitors, especially if they use mobility aids.
Supportive Measures
• Essential Oils: Chamomile, Lavender, Valarian, Jasmine: For general anxiety, dilute essential oils with aloe vera gel/almond oil for topical massage, or mix with lavender hydrosol as air mister.
• NEVER use oils topically on CATS!
• A THUNDER COAT or a TELLINGTON WRAP fits snuggly to make your pet feel more secure.
• Turn an armchair upside down or put a blanket over a table to provide you pet with a safe den to retreat to.
• Homeopathic ACONITE works well for fear and anxiety.
Toxins
Festive foods, attractive decorations and presents will be very tempting to your pets, but some of these things may be harmful if consumed. Keep pets away from mouldy food, nuts, raisins, alcohol, chocolates, tinsel, and de-icer/antifreeze on roads and in puddle water.
If consumed, CONSULT VET IMMEDIATELY!
So that they don’t miss out, make some homemade pet treats, which are healthier, cheaper and SAFER for pets, eg freeze-dried chicken/beef, liver cake or raw apple/cucumber chunks or carrot and yoghurt biscuits?
Finally, no matter how tempting, PLEASE do not buy a cute pet on a Christmas present whim. They grow, cost money and live way past Christmas week!
Wishing you, and your pets, a safe and happy time!

When choosing a performing arts school for your child, it is important that as well as a versatile arts education, you are also selecting a school that meets their needs. At Stagecoach, we pride ourselves on offering exciting theatrical and creative experiences while maintaining a caring and nurturing atmosphere that suits all. #stagecoach #performingarts #singdanceact #creativecourageforlife #artseducation #thatstagecoachfeeling
A new theatre is coming to Oswestry!
The arts have long been underfunded in our schools and communities, but at Oswestry School we have never forgotten the importance of artistic expression for the wellbeing of young people.
And nothing could prove our commitment to the arts in our community more than the creation of an exciting new Performing Arts Centre.
The Oswestry School Performing Arts Centre £1.5 million appeal seeks to raise the funds needed to convert the school’s War Memorial Hall into a theatre and arts facility for all to enjoy.
Community Use
This facility is being created for both Oswestry School and the local community to use.
Headmaster Peter Middleton said, “At a time when funding for the arts is being reduced at a national level, our vision is rooted in a deep belief in the fundamental importance of the performing arts for young people. Our ultimate objective is for the new facility to benefit as many people as possible, and to become a treasured and much-loved part of the town of Oswestry and our local community.”
Oswestry School
Performing Arts Academy
This project is a commitment not only to the future of our pupils, but also to the wider Oswestry community, and builds upon the foundations already established by the Oswestry School Performing Arts Academy.
Established over ten years ago by Director of Performing Arts, Claire Thompson, the academy is open to anyone between the ages of 2 and 18. With over 115 members from 21 local schools attending, the academy
is thriving! Pupils learn dance and performance skills which build and nurture confidence, self-expression and imagination. Not only that, but lasting friendships are created and a real sense of community is fostered.

Mince pie Toastie
Fancy a mince pie with a twist? Then ring the changes with this tasty festive toastie, using puff pastry instead of bread.
Ingred I ent s
• Borderfields Lemon Infused Rapeseed Oil Spray
• 375g ready-rolled puff pastry, defrosted if frozen
• 6 tbsp good-quality mincemeat
• 1 egg, lightly beaten
• 100g mascarpone
• 1 tbsp whisky (optional)
• Icing sugar, to serve
For more recipe inspiration using the Borderfields range of Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oils, visit www.borderfields.co.uk.

1. Preheat your toastie machine. Cut the sheet of puff pastry into 4 squares, each the same size as the square in your toastie machine. Spray lightly with the infused oil spray.
2. Divide the mincemeat between 2 of the pastry squares. Use a little of the beaten egg around the edge of the pastry, then press another square on top to create a parcel.
3. Carefully place these in your toastie machine and cook for 5-6 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
4. Meanwhile, whip the mascarpone with the whisky.
5. Serve the toasties cut in half with a spoonful of the mascarpone cream, then dust lightly with icing sugar.

The Power of Belonging
Human beings are social creatures; we need community. Community gives us emotional and practical support, reduces stress and protects us from isolation. Research shows that strong social bonds are linked to a longer, healthier life. They improve mental health and encourage healthier habits. Deep social connections are even associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death, with evidence suggesting they may help slow the ageing process itself.
We already know that gym membership supports physical health, but what we talk about less is the impact on social health – how a gym community builds connection and belonging, and how that affects our overall wellbeing.
Exercising alone can be hard, but when you have people around you — instructors and other members — supporting you, celebrating your progress and helping you through challenges, and sometimes simply expecting
to see you show up, it creates a powerful sense of motivation and inclusion.
Regular exercise can boost our self-esteem and sense of achievement, but the conversations we have between sets and movements are equally important. These interactions help us develop confidence and our ability to engage more thoughtfully throughout the day. Social confidence built in the gym can be a game-changer when it comes to initiating conversations, making new friends or joining group activities, things many of us struggle with.
We live in a world where loneliness is rising as more of our interactions move online. In contrast, the gym can be a friendly and encouraging place. Exercise in the right gym is not only a path to a healthier body, but also a gateway to a more fulfilling social life and a greater sense of wellbeing.
At Coach House Fitness, we pride ourselves on our diverse community and prioritise creating a safe and empowering environment. If you’d like to be part of our community, please get in touch. We’d love to welcome you in and show you what we’re all about.

Fire and ice
With the chill of wintery weather upon us, now is the time that some crazy folks (like me) take to cold water swimming.
Small scale and anecdotal research has shown that cold water immersion (dip, swim or shower) can have a host of health boosting benefits including: reducing muscle pain and stiffness after exercise, lowering blood pressure, decreasing stress hormones and increasing serotonin, dopamine and endorphin levels that elevate your mood and act as natural painkillers.
Ice swimming (under 5°C) has been made popular as part of the Wim Hof Method which combines cold therapy, breathing techniques and mindfulness. Participants report an increase in both mental and physical resilience.
However cold water therapy isn’t without risk so if you are new to it then start slow – you get the same physiological benefits from a 30 second cold blast in the shower as you do a five minute ice dip. There are local groups of swimmers – Shropshire Bluetits Chill Swimmers, (thebluetits.co) and The Bersham Bathers (on Facebook) that will gladly introduce you to local swim spots and the delights of the cold!
Alderford Lake has a Winter Solstice swim 20 Dec 7.30am (alderford.com) if you’d like to embrace the cold in a safe, welcoming setting.
Then after the cold comes the fire! Try Cosy Cask Sauna (cosycask.com) based at Alderford after your swim!
Saunas have been used for centuries in Scandinavian countries and have steadily increased in popularity here in the UK. Benefits include relaxation, pain relief and improved heart and circulation health in a similar way to cold therapy. Combining the two is the icing on the cake!
Outdoor saunas around the area include Stōked Sawna (stokedsawna.co.uk) Llangollen, Sauna Cwtch (saunacwtch.co.uk) Hope, and Niku_Naku Sauna at Bala Lake (niku_naku.com).
Combining a fire circle, Pilates, sauna and optional cold dunk is the ‘Embrace Winter Experience’ at Camp Plas, Dolanog 7 December (lovepilateswirral.co.uk) the perfect way to slow down and learn about how ‘wintering’ is essential to us all.
Have a happy healthy month!

It’s not the load that breaks you. It’s the way you carry it
Do you worry when you forget things? As we all get older this question assumes greater significance. 1 in every 11 people over 65 years will have dementia. I used to say that if a patient thought they were dementing then they weren’t. I was wrong – we were really only diagnosing it too late in the illness and when there were no effective treatments there was not a lot to be gained in early diagnosis. Thankfully that has changed.
What is dementia? It’s defined as a group of symptoms caused by damage to brain cells which results in a decline in brain function. Rather scaringly the word derives from a Latin origin meaning “out of one’s mind”. There are a whole range of illnesses that cause dementia: the most common are Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia where the blood supply to the brain is impaired by furred up arteries. It causes a range of symptoms that include
Lena Horne
memory loss, loss of mental acuity, confusion and misuse of words, withdrawal form normal activities and difficulty with daily tasks and organising things. It develops insidiously and, like cancer, is a disease you want to avoid.
When a diagnosis is frightening, as humans, we do our best to not confront it and often ignore the problem until it confronts us. Now there are effective treatments that slow down the progression of the disease, this is not a good strategy. If you, or someone you know, is showing signs of this illness then seeing your GP is a good idea. What will they do? A simple mental test, often the GPCOG test, and blood tests. The GPCOG is available on line but it is not recommended to self-diagnose: although it may reassure some people who get 1000% of the answers correct! Remember that early diagnosis, like our heading today, can alter the way you carry the load.

Tis the Season… to Slow Down
by Jenna Ward, Personal Growth Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
It’s an interesting thing we humans do. We are nature - mere mammals - yet we regularly and consistently separate ourselves from it.
This time of year is an extreme example. As winter sets in, nature draws inward. Trees drop their leaves, letting go of what’s not needed to conserve energy for spring. Squirrels settle in, having collected food for hibernation. Humans, meanwhile, plan Christmas parties, shopping trips, lavish dinners, and endless gatherings. Madness!
When nature calls us to rest - with shorter days, longer nights, cooler temperatures - we resist. Instead of
slowing down, we speed up. I don’t know about you, but I want to hide under my duvet just thinking about it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the festive season! The lights, the music, the movies, the gatherings - I adore it all. But it can also bring pressure: to attend, to host, to buy, to be everywhere.
Ask yourself, where does that pressure come from? Do people truly expect these things, or is it a belief you carry? Maybe you’re all secretly thinking, “I hope they cancel so I can stay home in my pj’s.”
Consider saying no. Just that. I once heard “no is a full sentence”and it is. It’s empowering. Own your no this season. Choose what you really want to do - whether that’s a few key events or none at all.
For me, I’ll pick a handful of things I love: wreath making, dinner with
friends, a Christmas fair or two. The rest of winter will be candles, books, blankets, movies, hot chocolate, and naps.
So, buck the trend. Get rebellious. Say no to calendar chaos. Gift yourself time to rest (top tip: don’t fill it with doing). Hunker down, get cosy, and honour your need to rest.
Happy hibernation, fellow beings of nature.

The Tax Treatment of Christmas Gifts and Parties
As the festive season approaches, many businesses like to thank their staff and clients with gifts or a Christmas party. But before the tinsel goes up, it’s worth understanding how these gestures are treated for tax purposes.
Staff Christmas parties
The good news is that HMRC offers an annual exemption for staff events, provided certain conditions are met. The total cost must not exceed £150 per head (including VAT, food, drink, entertainment and transport). The event must be open to all employees (or all employees at a particular location), and it must be an annual function such as a Christmas or summer party.
If the cost exceeds £150 per head — even by £1 — the entire amount becomes a taxable benefit for employees, so it’s worth keeping a close eye on costs.
Gifts for employees
Small festive gifts can fall within the trivial benefits exemption, provided each gift costs £50 or less, is not cash or a cash voucher, and is not a reward for work or performance. Typical examples include a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, or a supermarket gift card.
Anything exceeding this limit or given as part of a reward scheme will count as a taxable benefit and must be reported via PAYE or a P11D.
Client gifts
Client gifts are usually not tax-deductible, unless they are inexpensive (up to £50 per recipient), carry a clear business logo, and are not food, drink or tobacco. Branded diaries or calendars often qualify.
With some careful planning, festive generosity can remain both tax-efficient and spirit-lifting. A little foresight ensures your goodwill gestures bring joy to recipients without an unwelcome tax hangover in the new year.

After a week’s work experience in Oswestry inspired her career as a solicitor, returning to the town as a partner for Lanyon Bowdler has been a proud moment for Kate Lawson.
She has been chatting about her route into law for the firm’s ‘Her Legal Story’ series of podcasts - discussing her career and offering advice for those aspiring lawyers of the future.
Kate grew up in Maesbrook and went to school just over the border in Llanfyllin, where she completed her A-Levels before studying law at Aberystwyth University.
She says, “My first taste of law was actually here in Oswestry when I had work experience at Longueville Gittins, later LG Solicitors, which merged with Lanyon Bowdler back in 2010.
“I spent a week in the residential conveyancing department and loved it, which led to me taking law at university and going on to take my LPC at Chester College of Law.”
Kate’s training contract brought her to Oswestry with Longueville Gittins.
“I really enjoyed the crossover between private client work, which includes wills, trusts and estate administration, and commercial and agricultural property work,” she says.
“I enjoyed meeting clients in Oswestry - we would see a lot of agricultural clients from the Oswestry and Mid Wales area - and it was nice to be able to see a whole process completed, working closely with the commercial and agricultural property team.”
Kate then joined Lanyon Bowdler when it merged with LG Solicitors in 2010, working in the firm’s Shrewsbury office. She has now returned to Oswestry as a partner to head up Lanyon Bowdler’s Oswestry office coinciding with Kevin Thomas reducing his workload and stepping back from his involvement as a full partner.
“I became a partner in 2024 and it was lovely to return to the Oswestry office where I did my training contract, and continue to develop and strengthen the team here,” Kate says.
And Kate’s best piece of advice for anyone thinking of starting a career in law?
“I would say work experience is invaluable,” she says. “It’s fantastic to get a true taste of what goes on within a solicitors’ office and what different roles there are. It’s not only legal professionals who work for a law firm - there are all sorts of options for a fulfilling career within the legal sector.”

Comfort and joy
Transform your home into a haven of cosiness, where every corner is filled with warmth and a sparkle of festive spirit.
Focus on creating a warm and welcoming home full of good cheer, whatever the weather outside. So turn up the heating, turn down the lights and get ready for sociable evenings with family or friends, or cosy nights with a book or a box set.
Create atmosphere with lighting
Christmas lighting is all about achieving a gentle glow. As well as fairy lights around the tree, you can also string them along shelves, across the mantelpiece or around windows. Turn off harsh central lights in favour of side lights, table and floor lamps, and add features such as illuminated wreaths or stars. Group candles – real or battery-operated – in clusters of varying heights to cast flickering shadows.

Add seasonal scents
Scent is the most evocative of the senses. Citrus and spice are Christmas classics: add drops of essential oil to a bowl of pine cones for a lovely table centrepiece, or make a traditional pomander by pushing whole cloves into an orange and hanging it from a ribbon. Easiest of all is to add scented candles, wax melts or reed diffusers.
Layer tactile textiles
Cosiness is about texture as well as temperature. Pile up throws in chunky knit, warm wools, soft fleece and quilted velvet, and scatter plump cushions in tactile fabrics like faux fur. Drape sheepskins over chairs and throw down a deep-pile rug or two to help block out draughts and add softness, colour and pattern.
Introduce homemade decorations
On your next winter walk, gather greenery, pine cones or holly and ivy to add rustic charm at home. Meanwhile, those cute angels or reindeers the kids made at school will be just perfect for the tree. Dress mantels, shelves or banisters with eucalyptus garlands, or fill glass jars with fairy lights and sprigs of red berries.
Style a festive table
Start with a linen cloth or runner for texture, then add a centrepiece – perhaps a wreath with candles, a bowl of shiny baubles or an arrangement of dried flowers. Other variations could include a grouping of lanterns or a row of small, wooden Christmas ornaments. Fold napkins neatly, topped with a cute addition such as candy canes, mini wrapped gifts or small wooden stars, and complete the look with perfectly arranged crockery, glassware and cutlery.

December in the garden
by Graham Mitchell
We have no idea what this winter will bring. Will it be mild or come with lots of snow? Either way, a bit of planning and care makes gardening way easier during the colder months. Veggie lovers, you’re in luck—some crops like parsnips and brussel sprouts actually taste even better after a good frost! That means they’ll be perfect for winter meals. Toss a layer of straw over your parsnips if the ground’s frozen—it makes them much easier to dig up. Celeriac and leeks are ready too. If you’ve got kale or other brassicas, pull off any yellow or old leaves to keep disease away. And don’t forget: if pigeons are causing trouble, just pop some netting over your plants to protect your hard-earned harvest.
Now’s also a great time to think about spring. Anything you get done now will make things much smoother when the weather warms up. It’s also a perfect moment to plant fruit trees. Got limited space? Try training your trees as cordons, fans, or espaliers—they look good and work well as screens. It makes harvesting much easier too. Don’t forget any of your preparations for the cold. Make sure any tender plants are inside or covered
and stash your watering gear so it doesn’t crack from freezing. Keep pot drainage holes clear, since sodden soil can kill plants. For houseplants, cut back on watering, but watch out — they can dry out fast. Check outdoor trees, shrubs, and garden structures periodically to keep wind damage at bay.
If you have a pond, scoop out fallen leaves and leave them by the edge for a few days so little water creatures can crawl out before you compost the pile. Feed the birds to help them through, but make sure your stored veggies are safe from sneaky rodents.
Once all that’s sorted, take a step back, enjoy everything you’ve done, and treat yourself to a bit of festive cheer. Wishing you a wonderful and relaxing Christmas! Grum
Now, what did I plant there?

in Evergreen appeal
when there are low light levels, few flowers and very little colour. At this time of year, these plants are elevated to become the stars of the outdoor stage.
Evergreens are stalwarts of structure. They create privacy, interest and texture once the garden has been reduced to a winter skeleton. These plants provide havens for wildlife at a time when there are few places to hide. From an aesthetic point of view, you can be sure that if your garden looks good during winter, it will be great all year round.
There are some beautiful evergreen conifers, but also shrubs, grasses, climbers, ferns and perennials. Just remember that evergreen plants DO lose their leaves, but rather than shedding them all at once when the cold weather hits, they drop gradually throughout the year. And don’t be fooled by the name: evergreens can be yellow, golden, orange, cream, red, pink and lime, as well as every shade of green you can imagine.
Groundcover
Bergenia is known as elephant’s ears because of its large, rounded foliage. It will survive just about anywhere, covering the ground in a cluster of colour-changing lush leaves, from which beautiful blooms emerge in early spring.
Euphorbia myrsinites measures only a centimetre or two high. It loves sunny, free-draining soils and rock gardens.
Others in the same family include the tall, spectacular Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii, loved for its huge heads of lime-green flowers in spring.
Creeping thyme, Thymus serpyllum, thrives in gaps and cracks, helping to stop weeds from claiming difficultto-reach areas. Its foliage releases a delightful aroma when crushed.
Vinca minor (lesser periwinkle) is a shade-loving evergreen that will help to anchor the soil and prevent erosion, as well as fill gaps that weeds can populate.
Creeping phlox will cover the surface of a sunny bed and give you a carpet of flowers in spring.
Hellebores, known as Christmas or Lenten roses, produce wonderful flowers during winter.
Evergreen heuchera (coral bells) come in an astonishing range of foliage colours.
If you have poor, arid soil and perhaps some sea-spray to contend with, Helianthemum rock roses will perform magnificently.
Hedging
Hedges bring style, biodiversity and environmental benefits to any scene, making beautiful boundaries whether in public parks, rambling manor gardens or social housing schemes.
If it’s topiary and ‘clipability’ that you’re seeking, look at yew. More unusual evergreen possibilities include Pittosporum, Fargesia (clumping bamboo), Choisya (Mexican orange blossom), evergreen Euonymus (spindle), Griselinia (especially for a sunny seaside location), Escallonia, Photinia, and privet.
Even leylandii (Cuprocyparis leylandii) has its loyal supporters, not least wildlife. Maintenance is key: leylandii does not need to eat up the neighbours provided it’s clipped at least once a year.

HOW TO CHOOSE A FINANCIAL ADVISER
As we approach the end of the year, it’s natural that many people start thinking about their finances.
From reviewing pensions and savings to planning for holidays or retirement, it’s a good opportunity to take stock and plan for the year ahead.
But with so much advice out there, finding the right information can feel overwhelming.
Here, Craig Roberts, co-founder of Belgrave Wincham Independent Financial Planners, shares his top tips on what to look for if you’re searching for a financial adviser.
1. Are they independent?
“Start by checking whether they’re an independent financial adviser (IFA),” says Craig.
“Being independent means they can look across the entire market, rather than being tied to a single provider or limited panel.
“In turn, this can give you greater choice and flexibility, as well as a more personalised approach.”
2. Are they transparent about fees?
He continues: “All financial advisers must explain their fees upfront, but the details aren’t always clearly understood.”
“If you’re left unsure about what you’re paying – or why – that’s a red flag. A good adviser will explain costs clearly and make sure you’re comfortable before going ahead.
“Be wary of unclear or complicated terms too,” Craig adds. “You should be able to ask questions and get straight, jargon-free answers.”
3. Do they feel like a good fit?
“Choosing a financial adviser is a bit like choosing a doctor or solicitor,” Craig continues. “Qualifications matter, but so does trust. This is someone you might speak to regularly for years. So, ask yourself: do they listen? Do they explain things clearly? Are they genuinely interested in your goals?
“Many advisers offer a free initial meeting, and with quieter diaries in December, now can be a good time to explore your options.”

Why should I use a solicitor for a remortgage?
Q: We are looking to remortgage with another lender at the end of our fixed term. My brother recommended we use his solicitor but I didn’t realise we needed a solicitor for a remortgage. Please can you confirm whether we do and if so why?
A: The quick answer is: you don’t need a solicitor for a remortgage. However, there are advantages to using one, especially if you are moving to a different lender. A solicitor will review your mortgage offer and check that all details are legally correct. They also ensure that your current mortgage is correctly repaid and ensure the old lender’s charge is removed from the Land Registry. Failure to remove an outdated charge from Land Registry records can delay or prevent a future sale and leave the property vulnerable to fraudulent schemes such as someone impersonating you to register a new forged mortgage against the property. Whilst your old lender is responsible for discharging a charge it held against your property this does not always happen automatically. Remortgaging through a solicitor will ensure the register reflects the property’s current status and protect you from being held liable for a debt you do not have.
In handling the remortgaging your solicitor will verify your identity, carry out money laundering checks, review your new mortgage offer, request and review copies of your title deeds, identify and resolve any issues arising from the Land Registry review, request a redemption statement from your current lender, repay your old mortgage and register your new mortgage. Different lenders work to different timescales, which can affect the length of time your solicitor will take to handle the remortgage, but generally if there are no legal complications with the title the process should take 4 – 8 weeks.
Many people who use a solicitor for remortgage also seize the opportunity to update or make a Will, set up an LPA, or update old ownership agreements at the same time.
