With Love From… How would you like to borrow outfits for fancy events FOR FREE from your local library? You just turn up with your library card, browse the rails of beautiful, preloved clothing offering everything from ballgowns to dresses for the mother of the bride to hats and handbags, available in a wide range of sizes. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it isn’t! Introducing “With Love From…” a shared wardrobe concept, lending party, event clothes and accessories via Oswestry library (soon to launch in Shrewsbury library), enabling people to borrow lovely clothes just like books - and we also offer dressing up bags for kids! It’s completely FREE! You can choose up to 10 items (so you can have a good try on session at home) and check them out for three weeks. No more dragging yourself around the shops, flinching at price tags, and regretting having said yes to the event as you don’t think you’ll ever wear your new outfit again, meaning you get to keep more of your hard-earned cash so your budget stretches further; plus, you can get to wear something different to every event you go to! All you need is a Shropshire library card, and all we ask is that
items are returned in the condition they were borrowed in. If something does happen to the items while they are on loan, we collaborate with local repair café teams where possible and if items are beyond repair, we put them into a collection for our sustainable fashion workshops where they are customised and upcycled. Since January 2025, of the 750 items donated to Oswestry library shared wardrobe, 423 were checked out, 99 were renewed and 77 of those were purchased. Pretty impressive. But aside from the fun of borrowing clothes for free, it also means that we stop clothing going unnecessarily into landfill. The hard facts are that the current fashion system is extremely harmful to people and
planet. It can take around 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton t-shirt. ONE! And approx. 70% of clothing today is made from synthetic fibres, which is basically plastic – and plastic is made from fossil fuels. Each year, the UK generates around 1.45 million tonnes of used textiles, with nearly 350,000 tonnes ending up in landfill instead of being recycled or reused. Shockingly, one bin truck full of textiles is sent to landfill or incinerated EVERY SINGLE SECOND. Think about that. However, there is good news extending the lifespan of clothing by just nine months can reduce its carbon footprint by up to 20%; similar research suggests that an extra 18 months of wear could roughly double that saving. By simply by sharing our wardrobes, donating clothes we no longer wear and keeping them in circulation we can slow down the fashion cycle, reduce waste and protect the earth’s precious resources. We want people to keep re-wearing and sharing for as long as possible, reducing their carbon footprint easily, one party / wedding / prom at a time. With Love From ... is on a mission to bring joy to recycling, re-wearing and re-using. Grab your library card and come and have fun browsing through our clothes, hats, bags, and shoes. And don’t forget, it’s completely FREE! By Pamela Green, volunteer It’s beautiful

Ladies Who Lunch for Good an event celebrating connection, inspiration and community Ladies Who Lunch for Good is a fundraising event from Community Resource, bringing together women from across Shropshire’s business, charity and community sectors. Taking place at The Wroxeter Hotel, the event promises an afternoon of conversation, inspiration and fundraising. Designed to spark new connections and celebrate the difference being made across Shropshire, it offers the opportunity to come together, share experiences and support a cause that is making a real impact in local communities. Funds raised through the event will support Community Resource’s work helping people access support, stay independent and remain connected, while strengthening the communities around them. The charity supports individuals facing challenges such as loneliness, rising living costs and health concerns, and helps sustain vital local services that enable people to live well within their communities. Community Resource has supported people and communities across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin for more than 60 years, from supporting local organisations and volunteers to helping people navigate the challenges they face. Every ticket sold at Ladies Who Lunch for Good contributes directly to this work. Hanna Clarke, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Community Resource, said, “Through this event, we’ll be raising funds for Community Resource while bringing together inspiring women from across Shropshire to connect, share ideas and celebrate the difference being made in our communities.”
importance of staying connected to the community where it all began. Deborah said, “I spend much of my time working and travelling around the world for my business, and while it’s incredibly rewarding, it can also be quite a lonely journey. That’s why I truly value the opportunity to spend the day with such an inspiring community of accomplished, likeminded women.”
More than a networking event
Hosted by Amy Bould, Community Resource Trustee and Managing Director of Be Bold Media, the afternoon will bring together women from across Shropshire for conversation, inspiration and connection. Guests will enjoy a two-course lunch, a talk from Deborah Mitchell, a prize draw and a guest pack, while having the chance to meet other women who are making a difference across the county. Whether they are building businesses, supporting charities or championing their local communities, Ladies Who Lunch for Good celebrates the women who help make Shropshire such a vibrant place to live and work. The event takes place at The Wroxeter Hotel on Friday 2 October from 12pm to 3pm. Tickets are £38 per person. “Ready Is A Decision, Not A Feeling” by Jenna Ward, Life Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
I read this somewhere recently and it really resonated with me. We often think we need to learn more, train more, buy more or become more before we’re ready. But what if ready isn’t something we feel? What if it’s simply a decision? It reminded me of a cycling trip I did through Spain with a friend in 2016. We cycled from Seville to Santiago, following one of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes, and then to the ocean and, finally, Gijon. We did it over six weeks, during June and July, with daily temperatures of 35 plus degrees celsius, over hills and mountains, and with only about five rest days. You might wonder how many months we’d trained for this trip and what specialist gear we invested in. The answer is, we didn’t. I said yes to the idea just three weeks before we were to meet in Seville. I barely sat on a bike beforehand. I borrowed almost everything: bike, helmet, panniers, tent, sleeping mat. I bought the other basics, including a seat, measured specifically for my bum (my one ‘luxury’! Yes, it’s a thing and my bum didn’t hurt once) and cycled in my trusty Birkenstocks, my friend cycled in her flip-flops. We started early, stopped for lunch, which we would have bought the day before - usually a bread roll, tin of tuna and slices of tomato - and rested as best as we could with a siesta. These were almost always outside, in whatever shade we could find and sometimes in quite unusual spots including, on one occasion, under a highway overpass! Depending on if we were staying in an albergue (the accommodation for people following the Camino) or wild camping, we often then rode until dusk. Some days were hard. There were climbs where I physically couldn’t move the pedals because of the incline and had to get off and push. There
We can spend weeks, months or even years thinking, planning and trying to feel ready, or we can decide to simply begin. was the day we set off and I wanted to cry, I was so exhausted. We turned around, went back to the albergue we’d stayed at the previous night and took a rest day. I must have slept but my dreams were all about needing to sleep and not being able to. I’ve never experienced physical exhaustion like it, not before and not since. I’m not generally one for jumping in at the deep end and this was definitely that, but what the experience taught me was something invaluable. We can spend weeks, months or even years thinking, planning and trying to feel ready, or we can decide to simply begin. Because here’s the thing: even when we can’t pedal, we can still walk. To this day, this is one of the greatest experiences of my life, one of the things I’m most proud of having achieved and one of the greatest adventures I’ve chosen for
myself. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, even the moments I thought my heart might actually explode after a long, steep climb! We don’t have to do everything ‘perfectly’. We don’t have to do anything like others might. We don’t have to look like anyone else and nor does our experience have to look like anybody else’s. The goal isn’t to ‘ace’ every moment or “do it right”; it’s to have the experience in the first place. It isn’t about living a perfect life but about living life. How many experiences have you talked yourself out of because you didn’t feel ready? What excited you but you shelved it because you thought, “I need to do xyz first and then I’ll be ready”? And what might change if you decided that you already are? It’s beautiful

Jewellery and Coin roadshow
Willington Road, Tarporley, CW6 0NB
A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it! Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art. Why not get a free valuation from our experts at one of our roadshows. There is no queuing and our experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself. The whole process of Valuation is free of charge and very private, so you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

L-R: Tom and Kyle
Opening the Door to Shropshire’s Growing Holiday Let Market Whether it’s the rolling hills, historic market towns or peaceful countryside retreats, Shropshire has become an increasingly popular destination for visitors looking to escape the everyday. As more people choose selfcatering accommodation over traditional hotels, the county’s holiday let market continues to thrive, creating exciting opportunities for local property owners. For those considering turning a second home, investment property or holiday cottage into a successful short-term let, having the right management partner can make all the difference. That’s exactly what StayShropshire was created to provide. Founded by local friends Tom and Kyle, StayShropshire has grown from a simple idea into a trusted local business managing holiday properties across the county. Having worked together for more than 20 years in the building management systems industry, launching a business together felt like a natural progression. The inspiration came during a family trip to Bath, where staying in a serviced apartment rather than a hotel highlighted just how much travellers value having extra space, flexibility and a home-from-home experience. Later, while travelling across the country for work, Tom and Kyle stayed in numerous holiday lets themselves, giving them a unique insight into what guests truly appreciate and, just as importantly, where many operators were falling short. They began by managing their own properties before taking on a handful for friends and family. As recommendations spread, so did the business. Today, StayShropshire remains proudly rooted in the county it was founded to promote.”We love Shropshire,” says Tom. “It’s an incredible place to live and visit, and we’re passionate about helping more people discover everything it has to offer.” That local knowledge is one of the company’s biggest strengths. From Oswestry’s independent shops and welcoming cafés to the historic streets of Shrewsbury and the character of Ludlow, the team understands what makes each corner of the county special and uses that knowledge to help market every property they manage.
Behind the scenes, StayShropshire has built a dedicated team that supports both guests and property owners throughout every stage of the holiday letting journey. Three full-time guest support specialists are available seven days a week, helping visitors from their initial booking enquiry through to check-out. Property Manager Ian regularly visits every managed property, carrying out inspections, ensuring compliance requirements are met and coordinating maintenance whenever it’s needed. Marketing and social media are managed in-house by Liv, while the recent appointment of full-time Maintenance Engineer Chris means many repairs and preventative maintenance jobs can now be completed quickly without relying on outside contractors. Alongside them is a trusted network of local cleaners and specialist tradespeople who help maintain the high standards guests expect. For landlords, perhaps the biggest attraction is peace of mind. Running a holiday let involves far more than simply handing over the keys. Pricing, marketing, guest communication, cleaning schedules, maintenance, compliance and bookings all require careful management. StayShropshire takes care of every detail, allowing owners to enjoy the financial benefits of holiday letting without the day-to-day demands. While remaining a friendly local business, the company has also invested heavily in technology, giving owners clear reporting and real-time visibility of their property’s performance. It’s a combination of personal service and professional systems that many landlords find reassuring. As more visitors continue to choose Shropshire for weekend breaks and countryside escapes, demand for quality holiday accommodation shows no sign of slowing down. For local property owners, there’s never been a better time to explore the opportunities the holiday let market can offer. And with a knowledgeable local team managing everything from guest experience to property maintenance, StayShropshire is helping ensure both owners and visitors can enjoy the very best of what our county has to offer. ‘Daunting experience’ improved thanks to funding from local cancer charity A Shropshire hospital clinic room has been transformed following the addition of a natureinspired mural, funded by the region’s primary cancer charity. Lingen Davies Cancer Support commissioned local artist Charlotte Tisdale to design, and hand paint a piece of artwork for the ceiling in a clinic room at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Most of the treatments that take place in the room include the removal of skin cancer – a procedure that typically requires patients to look up to the ceiling, often lasting up to 45 minutes per session. The cancer charity started the project following a request from Helen Childs, a nurse working in the unit. As the clinic room is used for patients of all ages, the charity-funded ceiling mural was designed to create a relaxing and engaging scene that would be suitable for both children and adults. Emilie Kerr, Events and Marketing Coordinator at Lingen Davies, said, “After having the pleasure of designing an interactive mural for our Sunflower Appeal in the waiting area of the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, I was delighted when we were approached by Helen to do something similar in one of the clinic rooms. “The sunflower design in the Centre waiting area was well-received by both patients and their families, with lots of great feedback, so we immediately knew just how beneficial this project would be for local people undergoing cancer treatment and other procedures in this room. “Everything we do as a charity is to make a positive difference for those in our community affected by cancer, so it was great that we could work with a local artist to help create a comfortable and engaging space for patients of all ages.” Helen Childs, Dermatology Nurse at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, said: “Having any sort of procedure under local anaesthetic when you are awake throughout can be a daunting experience. calm and inviting. We see all ages in our procedure room so having a mural with lots to see and interact with was a priority. “Charlotte has done a wonderful job. The ceiling tiles are bright and colourful - there are insects to find to distract our patients from their clinical procedure and the patients have fed back how it has helped make their surgical experience be a more positive one. Thank you Lingen Davies and the very talented Charlotte.” Shrewsbury-based artist Charlotte said: “The brief was to paint something fun, colourful, and engaging that would help distract patients. I decided to go for a woodland inspired scene with creatures to be found and winding leaves that the eye can follow. “It was really lovely to meet and work with Emilie and the team from Lingen Davies and come up with something we thought could help the service users that visit this treatment room. I really hope it helps those who need it.” Charlotte Tisdale from Shrewsbury is well-known locally for her murals around the town centre, in particular for the large feature piece covering the front of the former House of Fraser building on High Street. Her work can also be seen in the multi-faith room at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Lingen Davies Cancer Support is the primary cancer charity dedicated to making a positive difference for people living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid Wales. In June 2025 the charity launched the £5million Sunflower Appeal to grow cancer care across the region through the development of the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital by 2029. The Longest Yarn… Britain’s wartime story woven in wool Currently halfway through a three year tour of the UK, The Longest Yarn exhibition is open daily to the public from 10am to 4pm, until 30 September. The exhibition depicts life in Britain during World War II and features eighty, one metre tableaux created entirely from wool either knitted or crocheted. Britain at War examines how Britain navigated World War II, from the declaration of war on 3 September 1939 to VE Day on 8 May 1945. This includes significant events such as D-Day, the King’s Speech, The Blitz, the bombing of major cities, Britain coping with the war – the Home Guard, the Women’s Land Army, rationing, and much more. The 3D wool art display will feature eighty panels. In addition, there will be life-size knitted displays representing real people such as army leaders and land girls. There are also a number of talks, concerts and plays that complement the exhibition. The Longest Yarn is run by a small, passionate, self-funded non-profit association. They’ve brought this exhibition to life through determination, creativity, and the support of generous people like you.
Every contribution — big or small — makes a real impact. Your support helps cover essential costs like travel, transportation, and protective display boxes, making it possible to share this work with communities across the UK, Ireland, and beyond. Any surplus funds are donated to veteran charities, ensuring all generosity continues to make a difference long after the exhibition moves on. The event takes place in huge marquees and tipis at the bottom of the park, providing cover for most of the festival. Shropshire Oktoberfest has taken place annually since 2017, and is affectionately named ‘Shropshire’s biggest party.’ Beth Heath, Director of Fun at Shropshire Festivals, said, “The festival offers the perfect vibe for a brilliant night out – whether you’re there with mates to dress up in Lederhosen, eat street food and dance the night away, or you want to sit down with old friends and sample some fantastic local beers, this is the date you need in your diary.” Shropshire Oktoberfest puts a local spin on the Oktoberfest format, bringing in local brewers, distillers and drinks producers to serve their beers, ciders, cocktails, wines and spirits directly to customers. There is a live music stage, silent disco tent, Aion’s carpool karaoke, a Saturday comedy club, a marquee with long Oktoberfest-style seating, and a VIP Area with premium toilets and a view of the live music stage. Don’t Let Back Pain Ruin Your Day By Scott Gormley, Shropshire Physiotherapy Back pain can change your entire day. Getting out of bed becomes a challenge, sitting at your desk becomes uncomfortable, playing with your children can feel impossible, and even a simple walk can become something you think twice about. The good news is that back pain doesn’t have to control your life. For many people, the right combination of physiotherapy, movement and strength training can make a significant difference, helping you return to the activities you enjoy and giving you confidence in your body again.
Understanding back pain
Back pain is extremely common. Most of us will experience it at some point, and in many cases it is not caused by one single injury or problem. Pain can be influenced by a combination of factors, including physical activity, strength, sleep, stress, work habits and previous injuries. This is why simply resting and waiting for the pain to disappear isn’t always the best solution. In fact, avoiding movement because your back hurts can sometimes make things worse. Muscles can become weaker, confidence can decrease and everyday movements can start to feel more threatening. This can create a cycle of pain, fear and reduced activity.
Physiotherapy can help
A good physiotherapy assessment looks beyond the painful area. Your physiotherapist can help identify what may be contributing to your symptoms and, importantly, understand how your back pain is affecting your daily life. Treatment might include hands-on therapy to help reduce symptoms, but physiotherapy should not simply be about treating you on a treatment table. The goal should be to help you understand your pain, restore movement and gradually build your capacity so you can get back to doing the things that matter to you.

Strength is your friend
One of the most effective ways to build confidence in your back is through progressive strength training. Strengthening the muscles around your spine, hips and legs can improve your ability to handle everyday activities such as lifting, bending, walking and carrying. You don’t need to be a gym enthusiast or lift huge weights. Strength training can start with simple exercises using your bodyweight, resistance bands or light weights and gradually progress as your confidence and ability improve. The key is progressive overload: gradually asking your body to do a little more over time. Your back is designed to move and tolerate load. The aim isn’t to avoid every movement that might cause discomfort, but to gradually build your body’s ability to cope with it.
Don’t wait for the perfect time
One of the biggest mistakes people make with back pain is putting life on hold until they feel completely better. Instead, think about what you can do. A short walk. A few simple exercises. Getting up regularly from your desk. Returning gradually to the gym. Playing with your children. Small amounts of movement can add up to significant changes over time. If back pain is affecting your ability to work, exercise or enjoy everyday life, don’t simply accept it as something you have to live with. Physiotherapy can help you understand your symptoms, while strength training can help you build a stronger, more capable body. Your back doesn’t need to be perfect before you start moving. It needs the right support, the right progression and a little consistency. Don’t let back pain ruin your day. Start moving, get stronger and take back control. Quality home care is life changing Visiting Angels North Shropshire is delighted to have been awarded an overall GOOD rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The inspection recognised the high standard of care provided to clients across the region, as well as the dedication of the local office team and caregivers who support them every day. Now based in Shrewsbury, Visiting Angels continues to have strong roots in Oswestry while expanding its services across North Shropshire, helping more people access high-quality care in the comfort of their own homes. “Oswestry remains our flagship area, but our move to Shrewsbury has enabled us to reach even more people across the county who could benefit from personalised care and support,” explains Rachel Wintle, Operations Manager.
As the colder weather sets in
As autumn turns to winter, practical support can make a world of difference to older people and those living alone. At Visiting Angels, winter preparation often starts well before the cold weather arrives. The team works closely with clients and their families to help them feel safe, comfortable and ready for the months ahead. This can include helping to arrange boiler servicing and safety checks, ensuring homes are warm and energy efficient, checking that essential supplies are readily available, and helping clients unpack warmer clothing and bedding as the seasons change. For clients living in rural communities, planning ahead can be particularly important. The team develops contingency plans so that everyone involved knows how support will continue during periods of severe weather. “We want our clients to feel reassured that they are prepared, whatever the winter brings,” says Rachel. “A little planning can provide enormous peace of mind for both clients and their families.” The team can also signpost clients and relatives to local services and community resources that may help with heating costs, transport, social activities or additional support during the colder months.
Above all, regular communication ensures clients and families remain informed, connected and confident that support is always available when needed.
Companionship is vital
While practical support is important, the companionship provided by Visiting Angels is often what clients value most. Loneliness and isolation can have a significant impact on wellbeing, particularly during the darker winter months. Having a familiar face call in regularly provides reassurance, conversation and friendship alongside day-to-day assistance. Visiting Angels carefully matches clients with a small, consistent team of caregivers, allowing trusted relationships to develop over time. Many clients come to see their caregivers as an extended part of the family, enjoying the comfort and familiarity that comes from seeing people they know and trust. This person-centred approach enables people to maintain their independence, remain in their own homes and continue living life on their own terms.
Don’t wait for a crisis to hit
For many families, recognising that extra support may be needed can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re concerned about an ageing parent, a partner, or your own wellbeing, reaching out for advice is often the hardest step. At Visiting Angels, the team encourages families to start conversations about care early, before a crisis occurs. “We would much rather people pick up the phone and talk through their concerns than struggle alone,” says Rachel. “There’s absolutely no obligation. Sometimes a simple conversation helps families understand their options and feel more confident about the future. “Introducing support gradually can be a positive experience for everyone involved. It allows people to remain in control, maintain their independence and access help in a way that feels comfortable for them.” If you or a loved one could benefit from support at home, contact Visiting Angels North Shropshire on 01691 888558 or visit www.visiting-angels.co.uk/ northshropshire

Clearing up the confusion
A million people in the UK have dementia, but how much do you know about it? Is dementia the same as Alzheimer’s?
Dementia describes a set of symptoms that affect memory, problem-solving, language and behaviour. Two out of three people with dementia have Alzheimer’s, caused by a buildup of substances in the brain. The next most common is vascular dementia, which is caused by damage to blood vessels supplying the brain. Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) can cause slow movement and is related to Parkinson’s. ‘Mild cognitive impairment’ refers to mild problems with thinking and memory. Causes include stress, sleep disorders, medication side effects and thyroid conditions, as well as Alzheimer’s or another cause of dementia.
What are the signs of dementia?
Early symptoms include: • Forgetting recent events or people • Repeating yourself • Problems making decisions and following instructions • Mood or personality changes It’s good to be home
• •
Being confused about time or place Struggling to find the right words People may become more aggressive, develop unusual sleep patterns, wander or become paranoid as their symptoms get worse.
What can I do?
A diagnosis can help you make adjustments, get extra support and plan for the future. Medications are available that temporarily ease symptoms for some people, but two new drugs that can actually slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s are only available privately. People taking Ozempic/Wegovy for diabetes or weight loss have been found to have a lower risk of dementia.

Choc Therapy As evenings are getting darker and crisp autumn days encroach, here starts the annual debating of when is too soon to embrace cosy seasonality? In one camp we have those cheering in the first signs of spooky décor on retail shelves, and in the other are those booking holidays through September to get one last hit of sun in a hotter climate, with ears firmly covered to any pre-October mentions of PSL. This month I’m taking a gentle step into cosy season with a look at something that is (almost always) a sure fire route to uniting tastes…chocolate! Exploring the changing perception of cacao, from guilty pleasure to a ceremonial tool, and why people around Shropshire are shouting the virtues of cacao as something that could increase livelihood and perhaps help banish winter blues. So, step aside sommeliers and coffee connoisseurs, it’s time to start talking about drinking chocolate as more than just a hand-warming cold day go-to.
Ceremonial
The origins of hot cacao as more than a drink but as a tool in ritual dates back thousands of years to Mesoamerican civilisations, where in different forms the Olmecs, Mayans and Aztecs would all use the sharing of cacao as part of religious ceremony. Prepared as a thick, frothy drink it would be served across symbolic occasions; from summoning fertility in marriages, guiding the dead into afterlife, and later as an elixir of strength drunk by warriors preparing to fight. Today’s cacaocurious can more likely expect a ceremony to include meditation, yoga and dance. The modern-era comeback of ceremonial cacao emerged from the 20th century mindfulness and spirituality movement, with an increased interest in cacao’s benefits driven by more globalised recognition of indigenous voices and more accessible travel to Central America.. There are many practitioners of yoga and bodywork throughout Shropshire who will shout the benefits of cacao and weave it into their own practice. However, for those wanting to dive head-first into community-focused chocolate celebration, Forever Cacao (who run events monthly based around Oswestry and Shrewsbury) create cacao fuelled evenings that will have your energy shifting between barefoot ecstatic dance rave to blanket-coddled gong bath…leaving you wondering how all this started with a cup of warm chocolate, but feeling all the better for it! Forever Cacao have been championing organic and ceremonial cacao since 2011, partnering with Peruvian small-scale farmers to bring this product to the UK, and cultivating a dedicated local community in the process. 34

Kitchen rituals
For those who would rather all experimentation of the conscious and culinary variety to happen from the comfort of their own kitchen, ceremonial cacao is simple to shop for and prepare. Matcha lovers may already be familiar with the labelling of ‘ceremonial grade’ when it comes to quality assurance. What makes ceremonial cacao different to your regular hot choccy is the way in which the product has been grown and processed, or rather, lack of processing. Made from whole cacao beans, ground into a paste whilst retaining the cacao butter, making a rich block full of natural fats along with essential vitamins and minerals. Low-processed cacao is actually one of the most nutrient rich foods you can get, offering cardiovascular support and improved blood flow from flavanols (leading to it’s ‘heart opener’ moniker) combined with overall mood and energy boosting caffeine. Country of origin, variety of bean and small batch production methods all also come into play, in the same way you would find with coffee or wine production, giving each batch individual character. To make your own home comforts ceremonial cacao, combine shaved or granulated cacao with warm water or milk in a blender. Popular flavour additions include honey, maple syrup, sea salt, cinnamon and rose. When combined you will instantly see why this is a very different, adult feeling, chocolate drink…velvety-thick bubbles with an oil-like shine demand a switch-off moment of ‘me time’, something we could all benefit from, even if not an intentionally planned ritual moment. Chocoholic credentials firmly levelled up!

A shining example of what happens when imagination meets our collaborative process is our recently published book, This is NOT a picture book!: A laugh-out-loud rhyming book about self-acceptance and why being different is brilliant, by Alex and Zoe Peart-Johnson here at TSE. It’s been making major waves with families, earning rave reviews across the board. Readers have called it a "clever and hilarious book" that leaves kids "falling about laughing," while others praised its "gorgeously funny" style and brilliant message celebrating individuality. One reviewer even hailed it as a "cheeky rhyming book that ka-pows the reader with design rather than images". To Board or Not to Board? A Taste of Boarding Life When considering the best school for your child, there used to be only two choices: boarding or not boarding. Today, families have far greater flexibility, with a wider range of options available to find the right balance. Alongside academic excellence, parents value an environment where their child can grow, develop confidence and enjoy a consistent, supportive education. Many boarding schools now offer a variety of options, with part-time or weekly boarding becoming increasingly popular. Providing a bridge between day school and full boarding, it allows pupils to experience the benefits of boarding while maintaining the comfort of home.
It’s Beautiful Family Voice | 44
Flexibility is Key Distance from school is often one of the biggest considerations when choosing the right school. Weekly boarding can open up new possibilities, allowing pupils to stay during the week before returning home at weekends or, where appropriate, part-way through the week. For many families, this makes schools that may once have felt too far away a realistic option. Rather than spending hours travelling each day, pupils can focus their time and energy on learning, activities and friendships. Weekly boarding can also work well for students who have experienced occasional boarding, whether due to family commitments, travel arrangements, or academic and co-curricular opportunities. It provides a flexible approach that can adapt as needs change. For parents, this offers practical support in balancing family life and work commitments. At the same time, pupils benefit from a consistent routine, evening activities and opportunities to develop their time-management and organisational skills. As students progress through the school, weekly boarding can provide a natural pathway towards full St. Bede’s
St. Hilda’s
boarding, particularly in Sixth Form. It helps pupils build the independence and confidence they will need for university and life beyond school. Independence, Community and Opportunity Weekly and occasional boarding give pupils the chance to become part of a wider school community. They can build friendships across year groups, meet students from different backgrounds and nationalities, and take part in opportunities beyond the classroom. Living alongside others also develops teamwork, communication and responsibility. Opportunities such as becoming a Head of House provide further chances to develop leadership skills and confidence. Creating Memories That Last a Lifetime And last but not least… boarding is fun! Whether weekly or full-time, pupils can enjoy a wide range of activities, from sport, drama, CCF and Duke of Edinburgh to golf, swimming, gym sessions, debating and evening activities. Weekend trips and activities also provide opportunities to try new things, strengthen friendships and make the most of life at Ellesmere. Come and Experience Boarding for Yourself There’s no better way to discover what boarding at Ellesmere is like than by seeing it for yourself. Join us at our Open Morning on 26 September, from 10am–1pm, where you can explore the College, meet staff and pupils, and experience our boarding community first-hand. Whether you’re considering full, weekly or occasional boarding, our Open Day is a great opportunity to discover whether Ellesmere could be the right fit for your child. Dangers of using ai to access legal aDvice highlighteD A leading law firm is warning of the dangers of using Artificial Intelligence to generate legal advice. Lawyers at Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices across Shropshire, Herefordshire and North Wales, say there are growing concerns that people think they can obtain adequate information about legal matters simply by asking AI. The reality, however, is different and searches often result in a lack of accuracy with AI-sourced information which can sometimes include the fabrication of case law. Other problems highlighted with AI responses include detailing outdated legislation and amalgamating UK law with that of other countries. There are also real fears within the legal profession that using unreliable AI information could lead to further litigation problems while threatening personal data security, resulting in a loss of legal privilege. Brian Evans, managing partner of Lanyon Bowdler, said: “The use of AI is increasing and will continue to do so, and there is no doubt that AI is going to prove extremely beneficial in many areas. But we need to issue a warning and urge people to exercise caution when it comes to legal advice and data security. “AI is easy to use when looking for answers to problems but the thought that anything generated by AI is accurate and safe to use is misplaced, and potentially very dangerous. I would strongly advise anyone looking to access legal advice through this medium not to do so. “There was a recent article in
the Law Society Gazette concerning the use of AI generated documents in court proceedings, which acts as a very good example. The article reported on an employment tribunal case involving claims of various forms of discrimination. “Following the remedy judgment, the claimant applied for reconsideration and submitted a number of AI generated documents, including a 47-page overview document. “The employment judge noted that the documents appeared to have been generated using AI, were lengthy, highly repetitive, and written in language that was difficult to understand. “The judge commented that, while it may be tempting for parties to rely on AI when preparing submissions, it is generally more clear and effective for the court or tribunal to understand arguments when litigants set them out in their own words. “In addition to the clarity issue and the need to address a court or tribunal in a fit, proper and relevant way, there are a number of potential risks in using AI as a basis for legal advice. “These include relying on outdated legislation, omitting up-to-date case law or amendments - or even placing faith in what could easily be the invention of legal precedents, laws and cases that simply don’t exist. “Another common mistake people make when using AI is failing to understand that AI draws on information from across the world and this can result in a mix-andmatch of laws and procedures from different countries.
Brian Evans.
Searches often result in a lack of accuracy with AI-sourced information which can sometimes include the fabrication of case law.
“Something that applies in one country is unlikely to apply here in the UK, so the information you are being given by AI may have no relevance to your particular situation. “There are also serious concerns about parties involved in litigation inputting data about the case into a public AI system to assist them in dealing with the case. This could very well amount to putting the documents in the public domain, which means that they may no longer be protected from disclosure to the other side in the litigation process. “Parties don’t realise this and would be horrified to learn that the advice letter they had from the solicitor, or the detailed barrister’s opinion setting out the strengths and weaknesses of their case, which they put into a public AI system to obtain a summary, might then have to be handed over to the other side as part of their disclosure obligations. “Advice should be taken before putting any information relating to a legal case into an open access AI model.”

Charity urges older people to stay one step ahead of scammers Community groups across Shropshire are being invited to arrange a free talk to help older people recognise the latest digital scams and take simple steps to protect themselves. A local independent charity is encouraging people aged 55 and over to become more Scam Smart as fraudsters continue to find new ways to target people through phones, emails, text messages and the internet. Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is offering community groups, clubs, societies and other organisations where older people meet the opportunity to invite a guest speaker to talk about current digital scams and how to avoid becoming a victim. The charity’s Scam Smart sessions provide practical, easy-to-understand advice about the types of fraud older people are likely to encounter. The sessions explain how scammers operate, the warning signs to look out for and, importantly, what people can do to protect themselves. Advice includes simple steps such as stopping and thinking before responding to an unexpected message or phone call, checking that a request is genuine, being careful about clicking links and never rushing into
sending money or sharing personal information. Jim Hawkins, Wellbeing Services Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: “We would particularly like to hear from community groups across Shropshire where older people get together socially. Whether it’s a club, society, lunch group or another community organisation, we can come along and provide practical advice that could help members stay safer.” The charity says people do not need to be particularly confident with technology to benefit from a Scam Smart session. The talks are designed to be accessible and relevant to anyone aged 55 and over who uses a smartphone, computer, tablet or other digital device - as well as those who simply want to understand more about the scams they may encounter. For more information or to arrange a Scam Smart talk, contact Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin on 01743 233 123 or email enquiries@ageukstw.org.uk.

Practical Magic After such a hot summer you might find yourself craving the grim weather so you can get cozy on your own terms. And autumn provides an abundance of opportunities to get cozy especially in our homes. Decorating your home for autumn doesn’t have to be dominated by a Halloween theme, instead you can go all out on natural elements like simple pumpkins and warm textures over bats, skeletons and spiders, but you can also easily add in witchy elements without going for the scare tactic. This autumnal edit is inspired by revisiting nostalgic themes from the 90’s especially from classic autumnal movies like Practical Magic. So, get yourself a warm coloured throw blanket, decorate your surfaces with pumpkins and herbs, curl up in your chair, light a candle and fully lean into that practical magic vibe.

AUTUMN RESET
Why Your Bed Matters More Than You Think A seasonal guide to comfort, rest and recovery As autumn arrives, there is a natural shift in the way we live. The evenings become darker, the temperature begins to fall and many of us find ourselves spending a little more time at home. It can also be a good time to think about something we often take for granted, our bed. We spend around a third of our lives in bed, yet we may give far more thought to the chair we sit on, the shoes we wear or the food we eat than to the place where our body spends hours every night resting and recovering.
Your bed is more than somewhere to sleep
A supportive, comfortable bed provides an environment where the body can settle, rest and restore. But our needs don’t necessarily stay the same throughout life. Changes in age, mobility, weight, health, lifestyle and even stress levels can alter what feels comfortable and supportive. A mattress that suited you several years ago may not necessarily be the right one for you today. Autumn is therefore a perfect opportunity for a simple Bed Health Check.
Ask yourself: •
Do I regularly wake with stiffness, aches or discomfort? • Am I constantly changing position trying to get comfortable? • Does my mattress sag or feel noticeably different from when I bought it? • Do I sleep better in another bed? • Is getting into or out of bed becoming more difficult? • And perhaps most importantly, do I actually look forward to getting into my bed? These simple observations can tell us a great deal.
Creating an autumn sleep sanctuary
Your mattress is only part of the picture. As the nights become cooler, think about your whole bedroom environment. Comfortable bedding, supportive pillows, gentle lighting and a room that feels calm and uncluttered can all help create a stronger sense of preparation for rest. It can also be tempting to turn the heating up and pile on heavy bedding as temperatures fall. Instead, aim for comfortable warmth without becoming overheated, and choose bedding that allows you to adjust easily as the seasons change. Your evening routine matters too. Even a few minutes spent slowing down before bed putting away the phone, dimming the lights, reading or simply allowing the day to finish can help create a clear transition between activity and rest.
Think of your bed as a health tool
This idea inspired my book, Your Bed as a Health Tool. After many years working with beds, alongside my background in health and well-being, I began to realise that we often think about sleep without considering one of its most important foundations: the bed itself. A bed isn’t a medical treatment but it can be an important part of the environment we create to support comfort, rest and well-being. So this autumn, as you prepare your home for the colder months, take a moment to consider the place where every day begins and ends.
“Your bed is more than somewhere you sleep. It is one of the places where your health is quietly shaped, every single day.” Allison Timmins is the author of Your Bed as a Health Tool and Showroom Manager at Newport Beds.

There are still Asters like Michaelmas daisies blooming in October.
Gardening
Enjoy the show! While we can’t do anything about the changing seasons, we can alter the way we look at them. Most people feel a little sad that summer has passed but now is the time to appreciate one of the greatest performances staged by nature – completely free of charge. While we humans add on a few layers of warm clothing, plants do the opposite. They cast off their seasonal mantles. This means we are privy to some wondrous colours, improving in intensity as October progresses. Leaves are a type of food processing factory and as they wind down, they shed layers. First to go is the outer chlorophyll and when it fades, we can see yellow, orange and red anthocyanin.
Star performers
Some of the best autumn colour comes from Japanese maples. In fact, most of the Acer family excel at this time of year, offering gold, red, orange or scarlet hues. The Juneberries, or Amelanchiers, and Liquidambar, known as the sweetgum tree, also put on a great display. It’s a good time to note your favourite trees and shrubs, as the planting season looms. Perhaps you have room for just one more? There is still some flowering interest in October, including Nerines, with bright pink blooms, autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale), Asters, Chrysanthemums and Dahlias.
Jobs for October
Before the clocks go back on Sunday, 25 October, there are tasks to tackle. • Plant spring-flowering bulbs and remember that flowers in casual groups are far more effective than singles or straight lines. Plant as early in the month as possible, so that the soil is still warm and roots have a chance to sprout. Don’t be tempted to plant tulips just yet, however. The warm, wet soil conditions that can be normal for October mean that the risk of fungal disease is high. • Divide perennials that are outgrowing their space and exchange interesting clumps with friends. • Prune back shrubs that look too large or untidy, bearing in mind that winter seed heads are invaluable for birds. Take care not to prune anything that might be a bit tender, because frost gains access through new cuts. • Prune roses now, so that they don’t rock in the winter winds, which can loosen their roots. • Scarify and aerate the lawn to get rid of dead grass and open up the airways. • Set the lawnmower blades high and give the lawn a final trim. • Aim to achieve contrast with evergreens, placing maroon and dark-leafed shrubs next to variegated or yellow-leafed specimens. We are about to enter the season when foliage comes first. Enjoy this month of transition; it can be a magical time. Pyrus Chanticleer is one of the last trees to lose its leaves.
Both the red oak and pin oak have red leaves in autumn.
Nerine flowers provide valuable nectar for insects late in the season.
