Lingen Davies
1,000 Cancer Champions Celebration

A regional drive to train cancer champion volunteers, encourage more everyday cancer conversations, and increase the uptake of cancer screening invitations has surpassed the 1000 recruitment mark.
The project was launched by the LiveLife Cancer Awareness team at Lingen Davies Cancer Support in 2022 as part of its work to help prevent cancer in the wider community. Building on its remit to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, the organisation was approached to partner with NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Oswestry Community Action, formerly known as Qube, to deliver its part of a national NHS England programme to address areas of health inequality.
To date, more than 600 people have been recruited and given cancer champion training in Shropshire and Telford, exceeding all expectations initially set for the Core20+ project. Lingen Davies bosses also appointed a dedicated Welsh Cancer Champion to deliver the same work in Mid Wales – ensuring people across the region were supported and upskilled, so far 400 people from across Mid Wales have taken part in training.
Lingen Davies, which is currently running a £5million Sunflower Appeal to deliver cancer services into Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital, took on sole funding for the Cancer Champions work in 2024. Health engagement professionals have worked with groups and industries as diverse as colleges, builders, industrial manufacturers, IT professionals, art therapists, beauticians, hairdressers, and community groups across the region.
Cancer Champion training was also delivered to both prisoners and staff at Stoke Heath Prison
– which has led to interest from further afield about rolling the programme out to additional locations across the country.
Naomi Atkin, CEO for Lingen Davies, said the success of the Cancer Champions project is testament to the passion and commitment of the delivery team.
“We are proud that our LiveLife Cancer Awareness work was recognised by NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and that the cancer champions project grew from that. To date the small team from Lingen, alongside colleagues at Oswestry Community Action, have recruited and trained more than 1,000 people.
“That is a phenomenal achievement. That is 1,000 people who have been given the skills and knowledge to hold everyday conversations within their own networks about the importance of taking up cancer screening invitations and are working in their own communities to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of cancer.
“Our half day training sessions are open to everyone, not just those who are working in the health sector. They are designed for people to hold everyday conversations about cancer, many of which will go on to save lives.”
Kim Wootton, Chief Officer at Oswestry Community Action says, “We are delighted to be part of the Cancer Champions project and to mark another fantastic milestone. Our Cancer Champions are helping to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and we are incredibly proud of the impact this work is having. Early diagnosis really does save lives.”

Caring for pets, supporting people: Our vision for veterinary care in Newport, Shropshire
At Nova Vets, we believe veterinary care is about much more than medicine. It’s about community, trust and the relationships we build with the people and pets we serve.
As a new independent veterinary practice in Newport, our vision has always been simple: to create a place where pets receive exceptional care and owners feel supported every step of the way. Our practice was founded by local veterinary professionals who wanted to bring a more personal approach back to veterinary medicine, one that puts pets and their families first. Being independent allows us to focus on what truly matters, delivering thoughtful, compassionate care tailored to every animal we meet. Every decision we make is guided by the wellbeing of our patients and the trust of the community around us.
Pets are family members and they deserve healthcare that reflects that. Our clinic was designed to feel welcoming, calm and reassuring for both pets and their owners. From separate waiting areas for cats and dogs to carefully planned clinical spaces, everything has been created with patient comfort in mind.
We offer a full range of veterinary services, from routine preventative care such as vaccinations and health checks to advanced diagnostics and surgical procedures. But beyond the equipment and facilities, what matters most is the way we approach each patient with time, attention and genuine compassion.
Newport has an incredible sense of community, and we feel incredibly proud to be part of it. Since opening our doors, we’ve been warmly welcomed by pet owners from across the town and surrounding villages. Our goal is to build long-term relationships with local families, caring for pets from their first vaccinations through to their senior years. Veterinary care works best when it is built on trust and continuity and we value the opportunity to support both pets and their owners through every stage of life.
Join Us at Our Open Day
On Friday 25 April, we’re excited to open our doors to the community for a special Open Day. It’s a chance for pet owners and families to visit the practice, meet our friendly team and take a relaxed look around our purposebuilt clinic.
We’ll also be attending Newport Show 2026, where we look forward to meeting even more members of our local community and celebrating the important role animals play in our lives.
Whether you already have a beloved pet or are simply passionate about animal wellbeing, we’d love to welcome you.
At Nova Vets, our mission is simple. To provide outstanding veterinary care with kindness, integrity and a genuine commitment to the community we call home.

BINGO’S NEW CROWD
If you’ve never visited a bingo club before, you might wonder who actually plays bingo, why they play, and what really happens inside a bingo hall.
Bingo is often associated with the stereotype of sweet older ladies marking off their cards. While they may look gentle, many are seasoned professionals when it comes to dabbing! However, the reality is far more diverse. According to a recent survey by Which Bingo, 40.2% of bingo players are millennials aged 29–44. They are closely followed by Generation X players aged 45–60. This wide age range shows that bingo attracts a much broader audience than many people expect.

a fun and budget-friendly option. In fact, the most common spending range among players is between £0 and £10 per visit, less than the cost of a family bucket from a well-known chicken chain.

So, what actually happens at a bingo club? For many people, it’s a chance to catch up with friends or meet new ones in a welcoming environment. For others and for the majority, it’s all about the excitement of the games and the chance to win fantastic prizes.

The same survey also revealed why people visit bingo clubs. Around 43% attend primarily for entertainment, while 28% come for the social aspect. Bingo clubs are quickly becoming one of the newest places to meet up with friends and enjoy a night out.

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected.
We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it!
Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art.
Why not get a free valuation from our experts at one of our roadshows. There is no queuing and our experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve.
If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself.
The whole process of Valuation is free of charge and very private, so you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

WHITTINGTON MUSIC FESTIVAL
A classical music festival held annually in a rural North Shropshire village attracts visitors from across the UK and boasts a programme performed by a team of internationally acclaimed artists.
Whittington Music Festival was established in 2013 as a chamber music festival held in St John the Baptist Church in Whittington. The church’s wonderful acoustic makes it a perfect venue for concerts, and the warm welcome shown by the community means musicians are keen to return year after year. In recent years Artistic Director Sophia Rahman has diversified the repertoire to include jazz and song, broadening the festival’s appeal to new audiences.
Once again, the festival musicians will include violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason, who has recently been named one of Classic FM’s Rising Stars of 2026, a list highlighting 30 of the most inspiring classical musicians under the age of 30.
For 2026 the festival theme is “Natural Wonders”, with concerts including a twist on Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations, Schubert’s iconic Trout Quintet, and works by Beethoven, Bizet, Brahms, Fauré, Finzi, Gershwin and Mozart. The programme will also feature the world premiere of “Break Out”, a specially commissioned work by Katherine Hunka. Alongside the concerts, Whittington Music Festival runs
an outreach programme in which visiting musicians lead workshops for local primary school children and students at Derwen College in Gobowen.Talented young musicians will take part in masterclasses on the Saturday morning, and also perform in a very special Family Concert at 2pm on Saturday afternoon. This year the Festival is delighted to welcome two members of the famously musical Kanneh-Mason family, with mum Kadiatu as narrator and regular Whittington favourite Braimah playing violin in a programme inspired by the animal kingdom. Come and hear the story of Ferdinand the Bull, and listen to a lovely cello piece all about Whittington’s swans! TIckets for all concerts are free to under 18’s. After the concert, Dr Kanneh-Mason will be signing copies of her books, which will be available for purchase thanks to the festival’s partnership with Booka Bookshop.
Returning by popular demand are Trio Archai on Saturday and the Far Flung Trio, bringing their unique energy to the Sunday afternoon concert. The line-up also includes the Whittington String Quartet, and clarinettist Mebrakh Haughton-Johnson. Familiar to Shropshire audiences are cellist Daniel Brandon, mezzo-soprano Samantha Lewis and soprano Kizzy Lumley-Edwards. The full programme can be found at whittingtonmusicfestival.org.uk

Dre Accountants
Megân Roberts, Audit & Corporate Manager
From a young age, I’ve always believed in making my voice heard. When I was 10, I was appointed Junior Mayor of the small Welsh border town where I grew up.
That experience gave me early opportunities to represent my community – including travelling to France as part of a town twinning committee. Looking back, I now realise I was the only female (at 10 years old no less!) on that committee, and it shaped my confidence to step forward, say “yes” to new challenges and push boundaries.
I began my accountancy career in our Ludlow office. I’ve always been ambitious, and whilst training, I was already thinking about what my career development could look like, and what I needed to do to get there. What I didn’t anticipate was that this would lead me to our Oswestry office, and how quickly I would progress.
Midway through my ACA studies, I was approached by the Audit and Corporate team in Oswestry, who needed temporary support during a period of maternity leave. I remember thinking it might be a chance to make
a name for myself, and so I accepted, fully expecting the move to last no longer than a year. As it turned out, I found I really enjoyed audit. I made the move permanent, left home, relocated to Shrewsbury, and settled into the department. This felt really daunting at the time, but soon became one of the best decisions I’ve made in my career.
Four years on, I’m now a Chartered Accountant and am delighted to have been promoted to Audit and Corporate Manager, thanks to all the support given to me throughout my career.
I’m proud of pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, but I also recognise that I wouldn’t be where I am without the encouragement of the women I idolise; my mum, my sisters, my aunties, my friends, and my colleagues. My hope is that one day I might inspire other women, as they have inspired me, to be tenacious, take up space and let their voices be heard.

CARES Tutoring and Consultancy
Karen Colton, Founder
When I founded CARES Tutoring and Consultancy, I wanted to build something that went far beyond tutoring or SEND advice. I wanted to create a service where families felt genuinely heard, supported, and empowered, because throughout my years as a teacher, SENCO, and now dyscalculia specialistintraining, I’ve seen just how overwhelming the SEND system can be for parents who are simply trying to secure the right support for their child.

My journey into business wasn’t planned; it grew organically from a deep frustration with the gaps I saw every day in education. Too many children were being misunderstood. Too many parents were being left to navigate complex processes alone. I knew I could do more, so I did. CARES was born from the values that guide everything I do: Collaboration, Advocacy, Relationships, Empathy, and Support. These principles aren’t just my brand; they’re my purpose.
Through CARES, I now offer psychometric assessments, dyslexia and dyscalculia screening, EHC needs assessment support, EHCP reviews, parent guidance, GCSE and resit tuition, and hands-on help with CAMHS and referral paperwork. One thing I am passionate about is fairness: if something is the legal responsibility of the local authority, I will not overcharge a family for it. Integrity matters to me, and families deserve honest, ethical support.
Alongside consultancy, I still work directly with children, delivering dyscalculia interventions, teaching numbersensefocused programmes, and running creative maths sessions. I love helping students who have lost confidence rediscover their abilities. Nothing compares to watching a child go from believing “I can’t” to “I absolutely can”.
Being a woman in business has allowed me to carve out a space where compassion and expertise sit side by side. CARES continues to grow, not because of marketing or strategy, but because families feel the difference in the way I work. I’m proud that what started as a small idea has become a lifeline for so many.
My mission remains simple: to change lives by ensuring every child with SEND receives the understanding, support, and opportunities they deserve.

Stagecoach
Performing Arts
Lisa van der Horst, Principal
Lisa is celebrating 12 years of running an inspirational business as a sole trader. Stagecoach Oswestry and Shrewsbury have operated successfully for nearly

30 years. After the former principal reached her potential with the business, Lisa took over the helm and has since grown the schools to full capacity and not looked back.
Lisa was previously a professional performer, singing, dancing, and acting in shows across the UK and the world. Having gained extensive experience in West End productions, she felt it was only right to help continue teaching and creating dreams for the children of Shropshire.
Students aged 4–18 attend Stagecoach to learn essential life skills and the theatre. Lisa’s philosophy is simple: “Just be brave, believe, give it a go, and don’t think ‘what if’—just try.” Children love attending to gain confidence, build skills, and make friends with like-minded peers.
“We are an inclusive school that welcomes all children. This is a place where children with specific needs can flourish and grow, as every child is unique and talented in their own special way. Children with differences ignite and come alive in our classes; we welcome everyone.”
Lisa notes that while being a
businesswoman isn’t always easy, the rewards are immense. She finds joy in working with wonderful children and Stagecoach families, keeping the school evolving with new ideas.
She credits much of this success to her amazing team of teachers. All performance-educated professionals, they do more than teach; they inspire, direct, and share their knowledge while maintaining high standards. Each teacher adds a unique spark that keeps the school vibrant and very creative.
This year, Lisa is focusing on unique performances, including a circus-style show in the local parks written and directed by one of her team members.
Lisa loves to breathe new life into her schools and intends to stay involved in the business as long as she can. While the work—training, teaching, accounting, devising, costuming, designing, safeguarding, and communication—occupies her time, she finds the job incredibly rewarding.
As Lisa says, “It just does not stop! I do love everything about being my own boss, especially seeing children smile each week doing what they love doing.”

Sun City
Sarah Adlington, Owner
I’m Sarah Adlington, the owner of Sun City Oswestry. Originally from Birmingham, I’ve spent most of my life in Shropshire and now live in a village near Oswestry with my family. I’m also a proud mum to my daughter, Lauren, who is in her final year at university studying English Literature.
Sun City has been part of the Oswestry community for 14 years, but my story with the brand began long before that. Back in 2001, I was managing a Sun City salon in Stafford whilst also overseeing another salon in Shrewsbury. When the Oswestry salon opened in 2012, it marked the beginning of something special. But it was in 2018 that the salon truly became my own. Taking the leap to buy the Oswestry salon and turn it into my own independent business was one of the biggest decisions I have made.
Today, Sun City is a thriving hub of the community, offering a range of high-quality tanning services including seven sunbeds, (lie-downs, stand-ups and infrared), whilst also stocking some of the industry’s most trusted tanning lotions: Australian Gold, Power Tan, Devoted Creations and more.
Leaving a secure job to step into the uncertainty of business ownership was not easy. There were no guarantees, no financial stability, but I had a clear vision. So, I rolled up my sleeves and set out to build the salon I had always imagined.
Owning and managing my own salon has taken me out of my comfort zone, but it has allowed me to grow immeasurably and I am proud of what I have achieved so far. I have grown Sun City into a successful business, but what truly sets us apart is our focus on customer service and responsible tanning. I haven’t looked back, although in 2020 I did wonder if I had made the right decision during Covid as we were closed for 35 weeks! But resilience has always been a trait of mine, and so I refused to give up.
Owning Sun City has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it is not over, as I am looking forward to continuing the development of Sun City and its place within the community.

Surplus Station
Natasha Rendell, Managing Director
As a girl I loved football, karate and riding motorbikes. I was told by the strong women who raised me, that ‘anything a man can do, you can do better’, that was in the 80s.
In 2026 I’d like to think that business has me thriving. I have had hardships that created situations where I had to problem solve. Being disabled brings its own disadvantages but never let a problem get a strong woman down.
Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair of Disney Media Networks said, “Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live.”
That is how I think we all should live. There are many days when I can’t get out of bed, I make excuses as to why I can’t attend things, but the reality is that sometimes my disability prevents me from doing what my mind tells me I can do. Because I set my own terms, achieve it by my own rules and am building a brand that I am proud to live by, I know I will

succeed. Even though some days I can’t use my legs, I can still use my fingers.
Being a woman can put you at a disadvantage, like having a disability— you must be strong and adapt to be taken seriously by men in business and I have managed to forge some amazing relationships.
If you think that clothing is led by women, you couldn’t be further from the truth. All our suppliers are male, and every one of these men, I am happy to say, take me as an equal.
The Surplus Station has a strong team of females who all bring their own unique personalities. It is our job to make sure that these women achieve every success in their work life and to help them become strong individuals.

KC Accountancy Services
Kim Cleminson-Jones, FMAAT
I didn’t build KC Accountancy Services in a fancy office with an amazing coffee machine. I built it in my little (boiling hot!) loft office, with a six month old baby beside me and a belief that
business support could feel more human.
Like many women, I was juggling multiple roles at once — professional, mum, problemsolver, planner. I knew the technical side of finance, but what I’d seen again and again was this: brilliant business owners were carrying stress because they felt they had to “know it all” before asking for help. Too often, the money side of business is made to feel complicated, judgmental, or out of reach.
That’s where my vision became clear. I wanted to create an accountancy practice that people weren’t nervous to contact. A place where clients could ask the “simple” question, admit they’re unsure, and leave feeling calmer and more in control. Approachability and understanding aren’t extras, they’re the point.
Starting from scratch was a leap. It demanded courage, resilience, and learning on the

go. But that leap has grown into something I’m proud of…a small team of brilliant women who share the same values. Together, we’re not just keeping businesses compliant; we’re helping them make confident decisions, plan ahead, and build something sustainable.
Being based on the Shropshire–Powys border gives us a frontrow seat to the talent and determination of women building businesses across our region. These founders, creatives and changemakers are building brands, creating jobs, driving innovation, and opening doors for the next generation, often while quietly carrying a lot behind the scenes.
For me, this journey isn’t just about success. It’s a tribute to leadership with purpose, ambition with heart, and the power of women who dare to lead, even if it starts in a loft, with a baby, and a big idea.

Martin & Jones Marketing
Ruth Martin, Director
After 15 years working within marketing, Ruth Martin reached a turning point. She knew the industry inside out, but she wanted to build something different: a space where

professional excellence and personal well-being didn’t just coexist - they fuelled one another.
Seven years later, Martin & Jones Marketing Ltd, her Shropshire-based marketing & PR agency has become a beacon for businesses and charities alike. With a core team of five, supported by specialist freelancers, the agency is built on a foundation of wellbeing, trust and community. In an industry often defined by “ASAP” requests and high-pressure launches, Ruth’s philosophy is refreshingly grounded.
“Marketing and PR are deadline-driven, but we have a team motto: No one ever died of a marketing emergency,” Ruth explains. “Maintaining perspective is vital. We aren’t brain surgeons! We want to deliver world-class service without letting stress or anxiety spiral out of proportion taking away the creativity that’s so vital to the work we do.”
This human-centric approach
extends to the community. Ruth is a fierce advocate for the local economy and communities, prioritising Shropshire-based freelancers and suppliers. Her commitment to the region is further evidenced by her role as a Trustee for the Shropshire Community Foundation, where she helps raise vital funds for the county’s third sector.
With over 100 years of collective experience, the Martin & Jones Marketing team steers clear of “flavour of the month” tactics. Instead, they focus on a solid mix of traditional and digital marketing & PR activities, that create a sustainable return for clients and ensure every penny of a marketing budget is spent effectively.
Ultimately, Ruth and her team are proving that you can reach the top of your game while keeping your feet on the ground. They aren’t just building brands; they’re building a stronger, more connected Shropshire.

Forward-Thinking Marketing

Soul Shropshire
Elisa Powell, Director
For Elisa Powell, Director of Soul Shropshire, business has always been about more than commercial success. It is about purpose, wellbeing, and creating meaningful experiences that positively impact everyday life.
“That belief is what led me to take over Soul Shropshire in February 2025, alongside my business partners, and begin a new chapter for a brand I had already been part of for many years.
“Having worked with Soul Shropshire for around six years, providing freelance marketing support, I had a unique perspective on the business. I could see both its potential and the areas where it had lost direction over time. When the opportunity came to take it on, I knew it was a chance to bring it back to what it was always meant to be.
“The first step was making the difficult decision to scale things back. The brand had drifted from its original purpose, so I wanted to refocus on the core reason it was created in the first place - supporting wellness through home fragrance.
For me, it’s about more than products, it’s about how scent can influence mood, create calm, and transform everyday spaces into something restorative.
“The transition came with its share of challenges. When the previous owner chose to step away from the business entirely, it created a period of uncertainty that could easily have meant starting again from the ground up. Instead, I made the decision
to re-engage the original founder, whose insight and experience have been instrumental in bridging those gaps. This collaboration has allowed us to reconnect with the business’s foundations while moving forward in a clear and sustainable direction.
“Today, everything we do at Soul Shropshire is intentional. From the way we develop products, to how we present the brand, it’s all guided by a renewed sense of purpose and authenticity.
“Being part of Shropshire’s community of female-led businesses is something I’m incredibly proud of. There’s something powerful about women’s support, building and leading with ambition and heart.
“After spending the past year refining the business and truly understanding what it needed to thrive, we’re now taking an exciting next step by opening our first store in Shrewsbury, the heart of Shropshire.

Filling in National Insurance Contribution Gaps
National Insurance credits can help eligible individuals fill gaps in their National Insurance (NI) record. This can be important because the number of qualifying NI years you have can affect the benefits you receive, including your entitlement to the State Pension.
To receive the full new State Pension, most people need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits. If you have fewer years, your pension entitlement may be reduced. This means it is worth checking your NI record from time to time, particularly if you have spent periods out of work.
Gaps in your National Insurance record can arise in a number of situations. For example, this could happen if someone was:
• employed but had low earnings
• unemployed and not claiming benefits
• receiving National Insurance credits for less than a full tax year
• self-employed but did not pay contributions because profits were too low
• living or working outside the UK for a period of time
National Insurance credits are designed to help protect benefit entitlement during periods when people are unable to work or are not paying National Insurance contributions. Credits may be available to individuals who are looking for work, who are ill or disabled, receiving sick pay, on maternity or paternity leave, caring for someone, or undertaking jury service.
In some cases, National Insurance credits are applied automatically, while in others an application must be made. There are two types of credits available: Class 1 and Class 3. Class 3 credits count towards the State Pension and certain bereavement benefits, while Class 1 credits count towards these as well as other benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance.
Taxpayers may also be able to pay voluntary Class 2 or Class 3 contributions to fill gaps in their record and protect their entitlement to the State Pension. Usually, voluntary contributions can be made for the previous six tax years, with the payment deadline being 5 April each year.

Jemma Groves is a corporate solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler in Shrewsbury, who works on large business transactions such as management buyouts and company re-organisations.
Jemma is also a member of the education team at Lanyon Bowdler dealing with a variety of matters from academy conversions and the transfer of nursery schools and pre-schools to name a few.
It was her love of the classic film, Legally Blonde, that first pointed Jemma towards a career in law, but she also has experience of being a secondary school science teacher prior to joining Lanyon Bowdler…
From Lega LLy B Londe to science teacher to corporate L awyerJemma’s story
Did you always want to become a lawyer?
I had somewhat of an obsession with the movie, Legally Blonde as a teenager and I wanted to follow in the steps of Elle Woods and study at Harvard Law School. Whilst I didn’t quite make it to Harvard, I did spend a year of my degree at The University of New South Wales in Sydney and got to pursue my other dreams of visiting the Neighbours set and watching the Australian Open live.
If you hadn’t found a career in law, what would you be doing?
Our People, Your Team
Here to Help
What’s your favourite thing about living and working in Shropshire?
I enjoy having the beautiful countryside on our doorstep with many outdoor attractions such as Attingham Park and BeWilderwood for the kids to burn off energy at but equally having the hustle and bustle of the town alongside it, with a great variety of independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
We continue to offer meetings via telephone and video and where necessary we are able to offer face to face appointments, please use our letterbox when dropping off documents.
After graduating with a law degree and prior to joining Lanyon Bowdler, I did have a ‘short’ five-year career as a secondary school science teacher having completed the Teach First graduate scheme, and so I would either be back in the classroom or otherwise a GP!
What local causes are close to your heart?
Families are referred to the service through agencies, health professionals (midwives, health visitors, social workers, GPs etc) and other charity partners, and so you can be sure that by supporting Little Stars any donations, monetary or otherwise, are benefiting the children, and mums, in our county who need it the most.
What’s your view of the explosion in AI - pros and cons?
I have to confess I am a lover of AI, both at work and at home, and I am looking forward to implementing Chat GPT’s design for my garden over the next few weeks in readiness for summer. I have also joined the recently formed AI working group at Lanyon Bowdler and I am excited to get stuck in with sharing insights with colleagues as to how we use AI across the firm and developing best practice.
How do you relax away from work?

How would you describe your job? If I were to describe my job in three words it would be ‘fast-paced, exciting and collaborative’ (or is that four words!).
• Clinical Negligence
• Court of Protection
I recently nominated Little Stars to become one of Lanyon Bowdler’s two partner charities for this year. Little Stars are a relatively new charity having achieved charitable status in July 2020, and they support families across Shropshire with essential items for babies and young children, such as emergency nappies, stair gates and cots, preloved clothing and school uniform.

Where Dreams come to life

Clear space, clear mind Home
Local home organising and decluttering business Zen Space is celebrating its first birthday this spring, marking a successful first year of helping families and businesses create calm, functional spaces that make everyday life easier.

Based in Oswestry, Zen Space offers a hands-on decluttering and organising service often compared to Stacey Solomon’s BBC programme Sort Your Life Out — just without the camera crew. The business was founded by local mums Lauren Williams and Chloe Breeze, who share a passion for organisation, simple living and beautifully calm homes.
Both founders have children under five and understand first-hand the realities of managing busy family households. The idea for Zen Space grew from their shared belief that an organised environment can have a powerful impact on everyday life, helping people feel calmer, more productive and in control of their space.
“Our aim has always been simple,” said Lauren Williams, owner and co-founder of Zen Space. “We want

to help people create homes that feel calm, functional and enjoyable to live in. When everything has its place, daily routines become easier and people can spend less time searching for things and more time enjoying their home.”
Since launching in March 2025, Zen Space has worked with households and businesses across the local area, transforming kitchens, playrooms, nurseries, bedrooms, wardrobes, staff rooms and offices through practical decluttering and organising systems designed to be easy to maintain. The team also supports homeowners preparing to move, offering packing assistance, home staging and decluttering before properties go on the market.
A typical Zen Space session lasts between two and six hours and involves one or two supportive, non-judgemental organisers working alongside clients to declutter, sort and reorganise a space. Practical storage solutions and clearly labelled systems are created to help maintain order long after the session ends, while unwanted items are responsibly donated or disposed of by the team.
Research highlights the growing importance of organised living spaces. Studies suggest people

in disorganised homes spend an average of 55 minutes a day searching for lost items, while cluttered environments can reduce productivity by up to 40 percent. Children living in cluttered homes are also significantly more likely to feel stressed and overwhelmed.
The Zen Space team also includes Emma Hinton, a home organiser who works alongside the founders to support clients across the region. Together the team brings experience from education, finance and home interiors, combined with real-life understanding of the challenges faced by busy households.
Clients say the results can be transformative
One client described the experience as “absolutely transformative”.
“In two hours, Lauren supported us to achieve what we had been trying to do for almost two years. We are inspired.”
Another customer praised the team after a kitchen transformation. “I can’t thank Lauren and Chloe enough. After struggling for years to keep on top of the clutter and make the space work, in just one day the kitchen was completely transformed.”
Another review highlighted the care taken by the team. “Lauren truly went above and beyond. She didn’t just help organise everything, she labelled it so it’s easy to keep tidy and manageable. She also sorted donations and removed rubbish so nothing was left to overwhelm me afterwards. I really feel like I’ve reclaimed my space.”
For more information about Zen Space or to book a session, contact Lauren Williams on 07792 982642 or email zenspaceorganising@gmail.com.

Dancing with the Unknown - The Other Side of “What If”
by Jenna Ward, Life Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
Uncertainty is uncomfortable isn’t it. The unknown. In the face of uncertainty our minds can go wild with all sorts of imaginative storytelling, rooted in doubt and fear, focusing on worst-case scenarios, catastrophising. In uncertainty we can experience stress, worry, anxiety. To counteract this discomfort, we start trying to control outcomes, to force what we want, how we want it, wanting our expectations to be met, needing that ‘certainty’, whilst afraid that our expectations and desires won’t be met and believing that if they’re not, it will be the worst case possible.
The thing is, when you think about it, there are very few actual certainties in this world and in life. We have no idea - really - what is going to happen from one moment to the next. Perhaps it will be the same uneventful break for tea, in the garden, that we have every day at 11am. Or perhaps today a robin will land on the bench and look at you. Perhaps someone unexpected will stop at the garden gate to say hello. Perhaps an ankle will be twisted on the path. Perhaps a spark of inspiration will arrive and quietly change the trajectory of your life. Anything can happen. All is possible. In every moment.
We often meet uncertainty as a threat, as scary, fearful, potentially disastrous. But it’s also true that in uncertainty is the possibility of wonder, magic, opportunity, beauty, life changing incredibleness.
I don’t know the full science on this but, in a nutshell, our brains respond in the same way to both fear and excitement (you could say it doesn’t know the difference), the heart races either way. If our thoughts create our emotions, and our emotions drive our physical response, then it is our thinking - the stories that we tell ourselves - that shape whether that racing heart is fear or excitement. Here’s the crux, the body is simply doing its job, we get to choose how we interpret the sensation, whether we experience that racing heart as fear or excitement.
So, whilst uncertainty is certainly uncomfortable, it doesn’t have to mean doom and it doesn’t have to be experienced as fear, anxiety or

worry. We can turn it into excitement, an openness to wonderful possibilities and opportunities.
“There is freedom waiting for you, On the breezes of the sky, And you ask “What if I fall?”
Oh but my darling, What if you fly?”
― Erin Hanson
We can choose to let fear of the unknown place us in freeze, hold us back and keep us from our light and the life we truly desire and deserve, focusing on “what if it all goes wrong?” Or we can choose to dance with uncertainty, to rest in gentle excitement of the beautiful possibilities and opportunities that lay on the other side of ‘what if’, to wonder, “what if it all works out?”
My greatest desire for you is to be free of what holds you back, to be emboldened to make your dreams reality. If you’re ready to explore your own “what if”, I offer confidential 1:1 life coaching, Reiki and wellbeing workshops to help you build your confidence, self-trust and self-belief, and the courage to take a leap and to dare to fly. Lamb Cutlets with creole mojo sauce
Ingred I ents
• 8 lean lamb cutlets or 4 lamb loin chops For the marinade/sauce
• 4 tbsp olive or vegetable oil
• Grated zest and juice of 2 oranges
• Juice of 1 lime
• 2 tsp ground cumin
• 3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
• 1 tbsp hot pepper sauce tip:
• For that extra-special Latin effect, why not add 2 tbsp Tequila to the marinade? to serve
• Quinoa and sugar snap salad
For more recipe inspiration, cooking tips, and nutritional information, visit www.simplybeefandlamb.co.uk. This Latin American-inspired recipe requires marinating to ensure super-tasty and succulent lamb – making a great midweek meal that’s big on flavour and small in effort!
method
1. To prepare the marinade, in a large shallow nonmetallic dish mix all the ingredients together. Place the cutlets or chops in the marinade mixture and coat well on both sides. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or, if time allows, overnight.
2. Preheat the grill to moderate/medium. Remove the cutlets or chops from the marinade, reserving the marinade. Grill the cutlets under the preheated grill for 6-8 minutes each side, or to preference.
3. Meanwhile, heat the reserved marinade in a small pan until piping hot and pour over the cutlets before serving.
4. Serve the lamb with a quinoa and sugar snap salad, or salad of your choice.

2. Drizzle the honey inside the circle and then sprinkle with lavender, if using.
3. Arrange the nectarine slices on top of the honey, allowing them to overlap slightly.
4. Sprinkle the toasted flaked almonds over the nectarines.
5. Cut out a 20cm diameter circle from the rolled-out shortcrust pastry. Brush one side of the pastry with raspberry jam and place that side over the nectarines.
6. Tuck the pastry nicely around and over the nectarines, and press the edges down slightly with a fork.
7. Transfer the baking tray and tart to the fridge to chill for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4.
8. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes.
9. Remove from the oven and cool slightly. Carefully turn the tart onto a plate and serve with vanilla ice cream and an extra sprinkling of toasted flaked almonds.

Crumble in a Glass

Unlike a traditional crumble that ideally needs to be eaten freshly baked before it goes soggy, this topping will stay crisp and can be made well ahead of time.
INGREDIENTS
For the crumble topping
• 50g walnut halves
• 130g unbleached plain flour
• 80g demerara sugar
• 1⁄4 tsp ground cinnamon
• A pinch of sea salt
• 90g non-hydrogenated margarine, chilled For the fruit base
• 500-600g fresh fruit, prepared weight (depending on the season, you can use mangoes, pears, apples, peaches, cherries or plums)
• 125ml water
• 6 tbsp agave or maple syrup
• 1⁄4 tsp bourbon vanilla powder or ground cinnamon
• 2 tsp lemon juice
Serves 4
Preparation time 20-25 minutes
Cooking time 35-40 minutes
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4 and line a baking tray with parchment. Spread the walnuts on a baking sheet and toast for 10 minutes (you can also toast more nuts than you actually need, to use them as a snack). Take the nuts out of the oven, let them cool and then coarsely chop them.
2. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the margarine and rub it into the dry ingredients until you get a fine crumbly consistency without big pieces of margarine left. Now add the chopped walnuts. Spread onto the prepared baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 15-17 minutes, stirring it every 5 minutes to prevent uneven baking. Allow to cool and then store in a tightly closed jar.
3. Before serving the crumble, wash, peel, stone and cut your fruit into wedges. In case the fruit is very ripe and soft (this is especially the case with mangoes, peaches, apricots and pears), just blend them into a puree in a food processor or blender with the remaining ingredients. If the fruit is only fairly ripe or slightly underripe, put it in a saucepan and add the water (it should go 1 cm up the side of the pan), syrup and the vanilla or cinnamon. Cover, bring to a boil, lower the heat to the absolute minimum and simmer for 10 minutes, or longer if you want very soft fruit. Next, mix in the lemon juice.
4. Take a dessert glass and layer it generously with tablespoons of the fruit, then 3 tbsp of the crumble topping. Repeat with three other glasses and they’re ready to serve!

Discovering the Spirit of Ellesmere
There are moments in a family’s educational journey that feel particularly significant—crossroads where possibility becomes something you can sense, hear, and see unfolding in front of you. Ellesmere College’s Lower School Open Morning, taking place on Saturday 25th April 2026, offers precisely one of those moments. Running from 10:00am to 12:00pm on the vibrant Lower School campus, the event promises far more than a tour. It offers a window into the rhythms, relationships, and real learning that define life at Ellesmere.
Where First Impressions Become Lasting Understandings
The Open Morning invites families to step directly into the spaces where curiosity is nurtured every day. As visitors move through the classrooms, they witness how teachers bring learning to life— intentionally, creatively, and with a warmth that encourages pupils to explore ideas with confidence. These are not staged experiences; they reflect the authentic atmosphere that students enjoy throughout the year.
For those considering the next step in their child’s educational path, seeing the Lower School in action is invaluable. It reveals the meaningful balance Ellesmere strikes between academic development and personal growth, a philosophy that extends through the whole College and is rooted in its longstanding ethos of helping every child become truly Life Ready.
Meeting the People Who Make the Difference
One of the most compelling elements of any school visit is meeting the individuals who animate it— teachers and pupils. At the Open Morning, families can speak directly with staff who know each child as a learner and as a person, answering questions with insight drawn from daily experience.
Just as valuable are the conversations with current pupils. Their enthusiasm for school life, whether they speak about academic challenges, friendships, or favourite activities, often reveals a culture more powerfully than any brochure ever could. Ellesmere’s nurturing, family oriented environment is consistently highlighted by students across the College, who benefit from modern facilities, specialist teaching, and a strong sense of belonging.
The Creative and Sporting Heartbeat of the School
Ellesmere is a place where talents are not only recognised but celebrated—and the Open Morning showcases that energy beautifully. Visitors can enjoy classroom activities offering a glimpse of the artistic passion that thrives here.
Not far away, the sports fields come alive with matches involving the school’s young athletes. These moments highlight not just skills and
achievements but the teamwork, discipline, and joy that sport brings to school life. Ellesmere’s wider reputation for excellence in sport, music, drama, and art is well established, with the College maintaining a strong record of supporting pupils to pursue their aspirations across all spheres.
A Welcoming Community Rooted in Place
Set within 150 acres of Shropshire countryside, Ellesmere offers a learning environment that is both inspiring and grounded, providing children with the space—literally and figuratively—to grow. The Lower School embodies that same spirit of openness: an environment where young learners feel known, supported, and encouraged to take their first steps toward independence.
During the Open Morning, families can experience the ease and friendliness that characterise the Ellesmere community. Staff are on hand not only to talk about curriculum and classroom life but also to help parents understand the broader journey through the College, including cocurricular opportunities, support structures, and the values that guide every phase of education here.
Why an Open Morning Matters
Choosing the right school becomes easier when you can see, hear, and feel what everyday life might look like for your child. For many families, events like this become a turning point: where a school moves from an option on a list to a place that feels like a natural fit.
The Lower School Open Morning offers precisely this clarity. It allows parents to see Ellesmere’s strengths—its warm community, its balance of academic ambition and personal development, its commitment to developing confident, capable young people—revealed through genuine, lived experiences rather than marketing slogans.
An Invitation to Explore Possibility
Whether your child is drawn to the arts, ignited by sport, inspired by classroom discovery, or simply ready for the next stage of their learning, Ellesmere provides an environment designed to help them thrive. Families attending the Open Morning are warmly invited to witness this for themselves and to discover why so many children flourish here—often in ways that surprise even their parents.
To join the event, families can easily register via the Lower School Open Morning page on the school website. Ellesmere looks forward to welcoming visitors and sharing not just a snapshot of school life, but a genuine sense of the journey that could lie ahead.

The Camel Who had The hump by Rachel Bright & Jim Field
The Camel Who Had The Hump is a fun and relatable picture book that captures those grumpy, off-days perfectly. Cuthbert the camel is hilariously stubborn, and young readers will recognise that stubborn mood straight away. The rhyming text flows beautifully, making it a joy to read aloud, and the message about turning your day around feels natural rather than forced. The friendship element adds warmth, showing how a small connection can shift everything. Paired with bright, engaging illustrations, it’s an uplifting story that children will want to revisit. A charming reminder that a little positivity can go a long way.

BlaCk BeauTy by Michael Morpurgo
Whether you agree with a re-write or not, this is still the classic tale aimed at young teens and horse lovers.
A retelling of Black Beauty, this introduces a timeless classic to a new generation of young readers. Michael Morpurgo’s gentle, heartfelt storytelling brings Black Beauty’s journey vividly to life, capturing both the kindness and cruelty he encounters along the way. The story’s powerful themes of compassion, empathy, and respect for animals remain just as important today, encouraging readers to think about how we treat others. Enhanced by stunning full-colour illustrations, the hardback edition feels quite special and makes a wonderful gift. Morpurgo’s warmth and sensitivity shine through, making the story both engaging and emotional without being overwhelming. Perfect for young teenagers, this unforgettable tale is not only a compelling read but also an important reminder of the value of kindness, ensuring it will be read many times over.

an oTTer Called peBBle by Helen Peters
An Otter Called Pebble is a gentle, heartwarming story that’s perfect for young animal lovers. Jasmine and Tom’s rescue of the tiny otter cub feels exciting but also believable, and the urgency of trying to reunite Pebble with her mother keeps the story moving. We liked how it balances a sweet narrative with real facts about otters and conservation, making it both enjoyable and educational. The short chapters and illustrations make it easy to read without losing emotional depth. Pebble is adorable, and you can’t help but root for her. It’s a touching tale about kindness, teamwork, and caring for wildlife.

I am reBel by Ross Montgomery
I Am Rebel is one of those rare stories that stays with you long after you finish it. Told from Rebel’s perspective, the bond between dog and human feels incredibly real… loyal, protective, and emotional. As Tom heads off to war, Rebel’s determination to bring him home drives a touching and often heart-wrenching adventure. It balances warmth, humour, and tension beautifully, never feeling overly sentimental. The voice is simple but powerful, making it very accessible. This is an unforgettable tale about love, courage, and devotion.

Health Harry discovers his immune system
One of his friends was off school – he apparently had the “kissing disease”. Not much chance of that for me – yet, thought Harry with a sigh. It was called Infectious mononucleosis or glandular fever and could make teenagers ill for some time. He found out that, if you test adults, 95% show signs of having been infected. Almost all of the infections were what they called asymptomatic and you never knew you had it. In fact, Harry found out that asymptomatic infections were common – the amazing thing was that you were immune after them so not only did you not fell ill but you were not going to get the infection again. How is this possible? wondered Harry. His immune system turned out to be both amazing and really complicated. Right from his birth, or even before that, his body was gearing up to face thousands of attacks. He had all sorts of cells that worked together to combat bugs. T cells and B cells featured prominently and were totally awesome. There were armies of T cells, some of them called commanders and killers. He had a gland called his thymus gland that was just behind his breast bone that sort of programmed the different T cells to do different jobs. Memory T cells did just what the name said – they remembered an infection and lay in wait to ambush it if it appeared again. T cells sort of talked to other cells – sometimes the other cells presented bits of the infection to them, at other times the T cell prompted other cells to fight the infection.
wandered around like sentries keeping an eye out for intruding infection. Others waited in various places like reinforcements that would mobilise when needed. Harry was astonished to read that the B cells were made in his bones. Somehow, he’d thought bones were well, just bones. Now he knew they were hollow and the hollow bit, or bone marrow, was like a factory for his blood cells of all types.
Harry read about the “major histocompatibility complex” or MHC. Now, that’s a mouthful, he thought. Apparently, he had 46 things called chromosomes that carried all the information needed to make and run his body and they were all numbered. Number 6 coded for this MHC which acted like a kind or presentation tray showing the T cells objects that were alien to his body.
There were different sorts of B cells: some wandered around like sentries keeping an eye out for intruding infection. Others waited in various places like reinforcements that would mobilise when needed.
Then came the B cells. They sort of made the bullets that killed the infection. These were called antibodies and the T cells did their communication thing to help the B cells multiply and produce more bullets. There were even different sorts of B cells: some
I need my immune system thought Harry. He discovered that it could go wrong – both ways! Sometimes it could attack your body by being too active. Sometimes it just didn’t work well enough, and you got nasty infections. His grandad had been in hospital with a chest infection after receiving treatment for a cancer so Harry already knew about that. He was struck about all the military like words used to describe the immune system. It was just like an army with ranks of different cells doing different jobs and he was determined to keep his army ready – especially because he read that the immune system didn’t like the teenage years with growth stress and “kissing” types of behaviour adding extra risks! He was going to look after his troops! That meant a good diet, regular exercise, not starting to smoke (he hated the smell anyway), enough sleep (not his strong point). Watching his alcohol intake (maybe one for when I’m older he thought) and making sure all his jabs were up to date. I can do that he decided.
Ludlow Art Society may be 80 this year but it’s still young at heart
The venerable Ludlow Art Society is 80 years old this year but is still young at heart, vibrant and welcoming. It was founded by and is still run by a group of volunteer members who are all united by the desire to promote and inspire artists and art lovers from Ludlow and beyond.
“They draw, paint, sew, carve, sculpt and hand print unique, original works of art for our twice-yearly exhibitions and entice visitors from around the country and abroad,” says Jane Taylor, Chair of the Society.

“They use every available material to enhance and decorate the surfaces of their artwork or leave them stylishly understated for your imagination to do the rest,” she added. “What will you find? What will you see?”
The Society’s, longevity and success is not all down to the undoubted talent of its members, much as they deserve to take most of the credit.
They are blessed with the fabulous medieval town of Ludlow as a backdrop for their Summer Plein Air Group painting sessions, along with their annual Spring and Summer Exhibitions.
Artists can be inspired by townscapes, landscapes, woodland, riverside walks, rapids and bridges; plus the opportunity to create intimate studies of the local architecture or hectic market scenes.
Famously, Ludlow Castle has been painted by J.M.W. Turner many times, from every angle, including many imaginary but equally delightful viewpoints.
The town has been praised by many notable observers, such as Henry James, for its history and atmosphere but, to be fair, every visitor loves Ludlow’s history and atmosphere including the Shakespearean plays and rock concerts held in the outer bailey of the 900-year-old brooding castle.
Another favourite summer activity not to be missed by local artists, whether experienced or just starting out, are the Talks, Presentations and Demonstrations held in Ludlow Assembly Rooms by the Society, which will stimulate artists’ brains and senses - especially when the bar is open!
And there are plenty of other welcoming watering
holes in the town centre such as The Church Inn, which shares its beer garden with St Laurence’s Church, the 13th Century Rose and Crown which has panelling carved by Mousey Thompson and the magnificently restored medieval Castle Lodge overlooking Market Square. Or try Vine & Juniper for that essential wine bar experience and the Ludlow Brewing Company, conveniently situated in an old railway building near the Station.
All great artworks deserve a setting like St. Laurence’s Church. This magnificent Gothic masterpiece showcases the members’ work beautifully and is an added attraction for visitors. The Society’s presence helps to fund the ongoing expense of maintaining such an ancient building, while encouraging extra footfall for their excellent cafe and shop.
Ludlow has no shortage of quirky independent shops, delicious delicatessens and irresistible cafes such as The Pale, No 1, Harp Lane Deli and Broad Bean. Along with other specialists like the stylish Planta Bay, where you’ll find living botanical art to help green up your living space.
For local artists, Roundabout Stationery and Castle Bookshop also stock artist materials and for framing there is The Castle Gallery, Willow Picture Framing and Frames by Sebastian.
There are so many reasons to come to Ludlow and a visit to Ludlow Art Society’s Spring Exhibition is the perfect excuse. It opens on Friday 10 April until Sunday 19 April inclusive.
Here visitors will see around 200 unique artworks, all available to purchase. Entry is free so looking costs you nothing!
Ludlow Art Society is always welcoming of new members. For more information, find them online at: www.ludlowartsociety.org.uk

Supporting your Body from the Ground Up: Custom Orthotics
By Scott Gormley, Shropshire Physiotherapy
At Shropshire Physiotherapy, we often say that everything starts from the ground up. Your feet are the foundation of your body. When that foundation is not functioning optimally, it can create strain and imbalance further up the chain, affecting your ankles, knees, hips and even your lower back. Custom orthotics are a simple but highly effective way to support your body and improve long term comfort and performance.
Many people assume foot pain is just something they have to live with. Others experience recurring issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles pain, shin splints, knee discomfort or lower back stiffness without realising that foot mechanics may be contributing. Poor alignment, over pronation, reduced arch support or asymmetrical loading can all place excessive stress on joints and soft tissues.
Custom orthotics are individually prescribed insoles designed specifically for your feet and your movement patterns. Unlike over the counter inserts, they are tailored to your structure, your gait and your lifestyle demands. Whether you are on your feet all day at work, training for an event, or simply looking to walk comfortably without pain, orthotics can provide targeted support where you need it most.
During your assessment at Shropshire Physiotherapy, we conduct a detailed biomechanical evaluation. This includes looking at your posture, walking and running pattern, joint mobility and muscle strength. We do not just assess the foot in isolation. We consider how your whole body moves together. This ensures that any orthotic prescription is part of a comprehensive treatment plan rather than a standalone quick fix. One of the key benefits of custom orthotics is

improved load distribution. By correcting excessive movement or supporting areas of weakness, they help reduce strain on irritated tissues. This can allow inflamed structures to settle while you continue to stay active. For many patients, this means fewer flare ups and a greater ability to maintain consistent exercise.
Orthotics can also enhance performance. For runners and gym members, improved alignment can increase efficiency and reduce energy loss through unnecessary movement. For those with physically demanding jobs, better foot support can decrease fatigue and discomfort over long shifts.
Orthotics can also enhance performance. For runners and gym members, improved alignment can increase efficiency and reduce energy loss through unnecessary movement.
Importantly, custom orthotics are not about restricting natural movement. Modern designs aim to guide and support the foot while still allowing it to function dynamically. They work alongside strength and mobility exercises to create a balanced, resilient system.
At Shropshire Physiotherapy, we believe in empowering you to move well for the long term. Custom orthotics are one tool that can help support your body, reduce pain and build a stronger foundation for everyday life. If you are experiencing persistent lower limb discomfort or want to optimise how you move, a professional assessment could be the first step towards lasting change.
