Bubble-hemmed tartan capes. Ruffled collars fit for a Tudor. Baroque pearls the size of small bird eggs. Hello, Ascot-worthy levels of sartorial drama.
As the deliveries for this year’s Jumps Season Lookbook started piling up in my flat, it became clear with every box I unpacked that I wasn’t dealing with clothes so much as pieces of art. Perfect to match the elegance of this year’s shoot location – The Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire.
A honey pot-esque bag crocheted entirely by hand from strands of satin ribbon? Check, courtesy of Isla de Gar. A headpiece covered in flowers hand-embroidered (imagine the time!) by embroidery artist Alice Archer? Check, courtesy of Emily London. A bag reminiscent of a Furby in the chicest way possible? Check, courtesy of Angie Power’s aptly named ‘monster flouff’ bag.
There are silk scarves printed in Greece by Idle Kings, inspired by the scarf that was handed down to one of the brand’s founders by her Greek grandmother. There are belts drenched in jewels the size of hard-boiled sweets (it could only be Sonia Petroff).
What I’m getting at is, this year’s Jumps Season Lookbook is brimming with clothes that are talking points. Conversation-starting clothes. Clothes are art just as much as any painting hanging in the National Gallery, so it’s quite right they should start conversations. And from there, they should be passed down between generations, shared between friends. Clothes as heirlooms, as storytellers – that’s what I hope this Lookbook showcases.
Crucially, in the same breath, the clothes in this Lookbook are wearable clothes. They’re not clothes that are talking points because they are ridiculous. Art and wearability (and key for the Jumps season – practicality) are and should be friends. Take Suzannah’s coat dress. It boasts the most elegant of cowl necks and a bow-adorned back, but an elements-defying durability exists alongside this beauty courtesy of its fabric – tweed sourced in Cumbria. (Naturally, this is traditionally neutral tweed reimagined in an ice queen-worthy duck egg blue). Likewise, Banshee’s red suit combines the warmth of velvet with decadent details – militarystyle frog buttons (each made totally by hand) and a pink, rose-print lining.
I hope, therefore, this Lookbook inspires you to look at clothes as more than a simple utility. They are so much more than that. Dressing up is at the very heart of what makes us human. There’s a reason we’ve been doing it since time immemorial. And there’s no better time to dress up more wholeheartedly than this Jumps season.
