INTRODUCTION

The Text of the Edition

The Greek text of this edition is identical to the text of the 6th edition of the UBS Greek New Testament (UBS6) and the 29th edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (NA29). At the time of going to press, these two editions are still in preparation, so this Reader’s Edition is the first edition of this Greek text.

Like UBS6 and NA29, the Reader’s Edition follows the Editio Critica Maior (ECM) of the Greek New Testament insofar as volumes of this edition are already available. This applies to the Gospel of Mark, the Acts of the Apostles, the Catholic Letters, and Revelation. In the other parts of the New Testament the text remains identical to NA28 and UBS5. The ECM is the major critical edition of the Greek New Testament, which is being edited at the Institute for New Testament Textual Research in Münster in co-operation with international teams of scholars. The link to the ECM ensures that the Reader’s Edition represents the current state of scholarly research into the text of the Greek New Testament.

One change compared with previous editions will immediately catch the reader’s eye when leafing through the book: the sequence of the 27 New Testament writings has changed in parts. The Catholic Epistles now appear between the Acts of the Apostles and the Pauline Letters, and Hebrews is placed after 2 Thessalonians and before the Pastoral Epistles. In this way, the sequence of writings has been brought into closer agreement with the early Greek manuscript tradition. The order known from older editions of the Nestle-Aland, the UBS Greek New Testament and, in fact, from almost all modern Bible translations, goes back to Erasmus in the early 16th century. It therefore does not fit well with an edition whose aim is to come as close as possible to the origin of the text’s history.

The following typographical features appear in the Greek text:

[ ] Brackets in the text indicate particular doubt of the editors as to whether the enclosed word, words, or parts of words are to be reconstructed as the earliest form of text.

⟦ ⟧ Double brackets in the text indicate that the enclosed passages are not considered by the editors to be a part of the earliest text, but an addition at an early stage of the tradition. Unlike in earlier editions of the Nestle-Aland and the UBS Greek New Testament, including the Reader’s Edition, all verses assigned a number within the New Testament are now integrated into the text in double brackets. Previously this was only the case for individual passages which traditionally enjoyed an exceptional position in the church (e.g. Mk 16.9–20; Jn 7.53–8.11).

Quotations from the Old Testament are marked in bold type, and a list of references can be found in an appendix.

The Running Greek-English-Dictionary

The running Greek-English Dictionary was compiled by Barclay M. Newman, the author of A Concise Greek-English Dictionary on the Greek New Testament. It was originally based on the text of the 4th edition of the UBS Greek New Testament, which was the latest edition when the Reader’s Edition was first published. The adaptation to the current Greek text was carried out at the German Bible Society by Florian Voss.

The glosses at the bottom of each page comprise translations of all words that occur 30 times or fewer in the New Testament, except for personal and place names. In addition, morphological parsing of Greek verbs is often provided even if these words occur more than 30 times.

The following rules have been applied:

(1) Each word that is accompanied by a definition is identified in the text with the corresponding number provided in the list of definitions at the bottom of the same page on which the word occurs. These numbers begin anew on each page of text.

(2) If a word occurs more than once in a paragraph, it is usually defined only on its initial occurrence.

(3) Word definitions are based on what is appropriate for the context, thus enabling the reader to make immediate sense of a passage without struggling through a series of unnecessary definitions. The intention is to provide easily accessible definitions that are clear, concise, and contextual.

(4) When a word is used with a meaning decidedly different from its other New Testament occurrences, the broader meaning is also often provided.

(5) Where significant differences of opinion exist regarding the meaning of a word in a given context, alternative definitions are included.

(6) Occasionally, idiomatic word combinations are defined, especially where the combined meaning is difficult to determine on the basis of the individual word meanings.

(7) When an unusual form of a word (especially of verbs) occurs in the text, its root form is identified and defined. (For a list of abbreviations used, see p. X.)

(8) In the dictionary, the different parts of speech appear (with a few exceptions) as follows:

Verbs: Present indicative active first-person singular, except where only passive and/or middle forms occur in the New Testament.

Nouns: Lexical form, genitive ending, article.

Adjectives: Lexical form, nominative endings for each gender.

Adverbs, prepositions, and particles: Fixed form.

An appendix offers definitions of words occurring more than 30 times.
