SyriacWitnesses

TheLeidenPeshittaedition(Rignell, Job)wasconsultedfortheSyriactextofJob. Thetranslationthathascomedowntousseemstobetheresultofacomplex, multistagetranslationprocess.AccordingtoRignell(Peshitta,364—74),itwasproducedintwostagesinvolvingbothJewsandChristians.ItseemslikelythatSyrian ChristianswereresponsibleforthefinalwordingofS,whileJewswereresponsible fortheoriginaltranslationoftheHebrewtextthatwasavailabletothetranslators. TheymayhavebeenwellacquaintedwiththeHebrewlanguagebutlesssowith Syriac.HebrewwordsareoftenrenderedwiththeirapparentSyriaccognates,even thoughtheseSyriac “equivalents” haveadifferentmeaning.

Therearenumerousalternativetranslationsincorporatedintothetext.Syriac equivalentsformajorwordsaregiven,butminorwordsseemtohavebeenomitted, andprepositions,pronouns,andverbalsuffixesinterpretedinexactlyornotatall.The firsttranslationfailedtoconsideradequatelythemorphologicalformsofHebrew words,forexample,plural/singularnounsortheconjugationsofverbs.Successive Syriaccopyiststhenproducedtheirversiononthebasisofanimperfecttranslation. ThereareindicationsthattheywereChristians(seethetranslationof28:13;30:23; and42:6,wheretheChristianwayofthinkingisapparent).

ThosewhotransmittedtheoriginalSyriactranslationprobablyhadonlyalimited knowledgeofHebrew,orperhapsnoneatall,andwereprobablynotJews.The HebrewwordsofthefirsttranslationwereusuallyrenderedaccuratelyintoSyriac andincorporatedintotheSyriacwayofthinking.Therefore,onthewhole,theSyriac textcorrespondstotheHebrew.Itoftenhappens,however,thattheSyriactextyields ameaningdifferentfromthatoftheHebrew.ThisisduetothefactthatlaterSyriac copyistsmadeassociationsinlinewiththeirownideas,withoutbeingabletoconsult theHebrewtext.

Itfrequentlyhappensthatacorrecttranslationhasbeenmisreadbylatercopyists. Theymayhavemisread d for r (itispossiblethatthedistinguishingdotwasnotinthe originaltranslation)or g for Æ andviceversa.AttimesSdeliberatelymadecertain adjustmentsinrenderingtheoriginalHebrewintoSyriactoadaptthewordstothe context,asunderstoodbyS.Anexampleofsuchachangeappearsin29:19,wherethe Hebrewword yd/bK,thefirstwordofv.20inM,appearsas arqta, “Iamcalled,” a misreadingof arqya, “honor,” whichistheusualtranslationof d/bK.Sunderstands itasconnectedwithv.19.Thetranslatorsofthecontinuoustextneededaverbinv.19 tocompletetheirtrainofthought.Theythereforechanged arqya to arqta.

RignellimaginesthatthefirstSyriactranslationwaswrittenontoaHebrewms., abovethelinesandinthemargins,andwasincomplete.Oftenonlythemeaningof themoreimportantwordswasgiven,andthisfirsteditioncontainedalternative translations.ThefirsttranslatorwasalsonotacquaintedwiththeMasoretic vocalization.SincetheSyriacscholarshadnotmasteredHebrew,theyhadtoguess

accordingtothecontext.Copulas,pronouns,andverbalsuffixeswereadded,fitting whatthetranslatorsthoughtwasthecontext.ThishelpstoexplainS’spreferencefor establishinggreatercontinuityinthetextbyusingconjunctionsandoverstepping verseboundaries.ItwouldalsoexplainwhySsometimesdividesacontextwhichis clearlymarkedinM.Rignellbelievesthatthetranslators “havebeensatisfiedwithan imperfectoriginal.Allbythemselvestheyhavetriedtocopewiththiswithoutany seriousattemptstoconfronttheresultoftheirworkwiththeHebraictext” (Rignell, Peshitta,375).

Weitzman(“HebrewandSyriac,” 387)basicallyagreeswithRignell’stheorythat thetranslationtookplaceinmultiplestages, butsuggeststhatthemanipulationof Syriacequivalentswaslimitedtoindividualpassagesratherthancharacteristicofthe entiretranslation.Hegiveshismodelthename “scratchpadtheory,” proposingthat thetranslatorfirstwrotearoughtranslationona “scratchpad” andthenadjustedand rearrangedthattextuntilitmadesatisfactorysense.

Szpek(TranslationTechnique,269—70)proposesanevenmorecomplex translationprocess,reconstructingnofewerthanfivestagesthattheSofJobhas undergone:(1)thefirsttranslationwasmadeonthebasisofanunvocalizedHebrew textclosetoMandcontainednumerousvisualerrorsandborrowingsfromGandT; (2)severaltexttypesbegantocirculate,asevidencedbydoubletspreservedinthe translation;(3)atexttypethatpreservedalargenumberofvariantreadingsfromthe othertexttypesgainedprominence;(4)lectionaryreadingsforreligiousservices werecreatedfromthistext;(5)thetextofthetranslationwasrecopiedseveraltimes, withnewauralerrorsoccurringduetothefamiliaritywiththeliturgicalreadings. Also,accordingtoSzpek,inthefinalstageofthetranslationprocess,theStextwas notcomparedwiththeoriginalHebrew,norwithGorT.

Insummary,whilescholarsdisagreeaboutthenumberoftranslationstagesandthe translators’ method,theyagreethatthefinaltextofSwasproducedwithout consultingtheHebrewtextofJob,whichexplainsthenumerousdeviationsfromM (cf.Loopstra, “Introduction,” xvii;Carbajosa, “Peshitta,” 188—89).

TheStextinallessentialsassumeditspresentformatanearlystage.Quotations fromtheearlySyriacauthors,suchasAphrahatandEphremtheSyrian,confirmthis. TheredoesnotappeartohavebeenanyrevisionoftheSyriactextafterthedateofthe oldestmanuscriptsthathavecomedowntous(S6h8 andS6h20),i.e.,afterthesixth centuryC.E.

ThefinalformoftheStextismostprobablyentirelyindependentofG,butatan earlierstageofthetranslationprocess,Gmayhaveinfluencedsomeofthe translators’ choices.Theduplicatesappeartobeinterpretationswhichhadtheirroots intheHebrewtextknowntous(Rignell, Peshitta,379).Regardingtherelationshipof StoT,Rignell(Peshitta,380—81)holdstheopinionthatSonthewholeisadirect translationoftheHebrewtextofJob.

Ononehand,ScansupplyusefulinformationaboutcertainHebrewwordsand expressionsbecauseSyriacandHebrewwordsarecloselyrelated.Ontheotherhand, theSyriactranslatorsworkedquiteindependentlyoftheHebrewtext,sothattheir wayofrenderingitscontentneedstobeexaminedverycarefullybeforebeing employedtothrowlightontheHebrew(cf.Rignell, Peshitta,363—82).Inmostcases thereislittledoubtthatMmustbegivenpreference.AlthoughMwasfixedinwriting laterthantheSyriactranslation,theMasoretesbasedtheirworkonoldoraltraditions regardingtherightinterpretationoftheHebrewtext.However,anySdivergence

fromMshouldbecarefullyconsideredonitsownmerits,alsotakingintoaccount thecontext.
