01| The Open Canvas
ARC 202: Design Studio Year: 2025
The open canvas is a place that is imagined by the community, for the community. In the heart of Southeast Raleigh, the Open Canvas is an expression space where expression isn’t just welcomed, it’s vital. Rooted deeply in the rich cultural tapestry and enduring resilience of this predominantly Black community, the Open Canvas is more than a physical location, it’s a sanctuary where voices are amplified, stories are shared, and identities are celebrated. Here, art becomes a universal language, fostering connections across generations and backgrounds. In essence, the Open Canvas is more than just an expression space; it’s a beacon of hope, unity, and transformation, illuminating the path toward a more inclusive and vibrant future for Southeast Raleigh.

Process Models

ARC 202: Design Studio Year: 2024
The design features an elevated platform that immerses visitors in the experience of being above the Little River, highlighting its cultural importance to the Pee Dee people. Water features throughout the space evoke the sensation of capturing the river’s essence, allowing visitors to take small bowls of water with them. These bowls serve both as symbolic tokens and functional tools, used for harvesting plants that can be taken home as a cultural souvenir. The space creates a memorable interaction between people and nature, honoring the historical significance of the river while fostering a deeper connection to the land.

03| Balance
ARC 302: Technology Studio Year: 2026
This playground uses the see-saw as a symbol of balance, between light and shadow, energy and calm, movement and stillness. Like childhood itself, experience is shaped by contrast; moments of excitement rise and fall, creating awareness and growth. Architecture becomes the pivot that allows these shifts to happen safely and playfully. Through changing levels, light conditions, and spatial transitions, the design celebrates the natural balance that connects all parts of life.

Through an abstract model of the forest’s three layers and an exploration of the balance between the life and death of trees, the conceptual framework for the playground emerged.

Thank You
