From silent mental health problems to blarring noises of student suicides
BY GLEN ISRAEL M. GAURANNOT IN FAVOR
65% of Filipinos opposes the call for Mindanao Secession due to the point of inevitable struggle on stabilization of their own constitution, boundaries, anthems, flag, economy, and international relations. 32% agrees and points out the cultural and economical capacity of Mindanao to be independent. The remaining 3% refused to share their viewpoint.

ehind the vibrant facade of lively campuses and youthful aspirations lies a vexing trend that demands immediate attention. With each tragic loss, the urgency intensifies, prodding the issue of mental health and academic pressures into the forefront of national discourse. As families mourn and communities struggle with disbelief, a collective call to action resonates, urging rapid and decisive measures to confront this escalating crisis. Recent years have witnessed a troubling rise in student suicides, casting a somber shadow over the pursuit of education. Beyond the tangible pressures of exams and deadlines, an intricate link of societal expectations, familial dynamics, and personal struggles often exacerbates the mental health challenges faced by Filipino students.
WHO underscored that student suicide is identified as the 4th leading cause of death among individuals, 15 to 29 years old. The government strived to resolve this issue. However, UNICEF pointed out the irrationality between the number of guidance counselors in comparison with the amount of students they each need to concentrate to.
It is truly alarming that suicide attempts inclined drastically from being 3% back in 2013 to 7.5% in 2022, representing an increase of 150% in the rate of suicide attempts in the Philippines.
Despite of the issue of mental health as gravely concerning since it triggers the drive to commit suicide, cultural attitudes towards mental health perpetuated silence and stigma, hindering open discourse and access to crucial resources. In a society where seeking help for psychological distress is sometimes viewed as a sign of weakness, students may hesitate to reach out for support, further exacerbating their struggles. a study conducted by Alibudbud and Martinez et. al. said that most students developed a stigma towards mental health, perceiving it as a personal weakness that may contribute to loss of character, embarrassment, and disgrace. This is the reason why students resort to taking their own lives in silence.
WHO also detailed that 20% of Filipino students considered committing suicide. The number, though relatively small, represents about five million young individuals driven to the same corner of hopelessness.
Amidst the government’s expedition to find answers, WHO and UNICEF plunged into potential pathways to safeguard the well-being of the Philippines’ future leaders.

A TASTE OF HIS GUNPOWDER

ICC reprobes on Duterte’s crime against humanity; spells hope to families of drug war victims
BY GLEN ISAREL M. GAURANNanette’s Christmas was never the same since the fateful day came when the life of her beloved eldest son, Aldrin was taken by the hands of an unknown group of assailants with hidden motives toward the victim himself or his past record related to usage of illicit drugs. The night that was supposed to be similar to the rest, turned into a horrific incident that forever scarred Nanette Castillo and caused a maelstrom in Tondo as the blood of her precious son filled the gaps of Herbosa street.
Castillo is just one of the thousands of families that lost a family member due to an executive declaration of something similar to a purge that is exclusive for users and dealers of illegal drugs, whether alleged or caught redhanded.
The traces of tragedy that had been tainted in the eyes of the victims’ families reflected the former state of our nation enveloped with the fear of one thing.
THE WAR ON DRUGS
Beginning shortly after Rodrigo Roa Duterte assumed office in June 2016, the government launched a brutal crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse, characterized by a significant increase in extrajudicial killings. These killings, often carried out by law enforcement or vigilante groups, bypass the judicial process, resulting in the deaths of thousands of suspected drug offenders.
Duterte’s aggressive stance stems from his campaign promises to eradicate drugs and crime, advocating for a straightforward approach to restore law and order.
However, critics argue that the methods employed violate human rights and lack due process, sparking
condemnation from human rights organizations and foreign governments.
Despite the widespread criticism, Duterte’s administration has remained steadfast in its pursuit of what it perceives as necessary measures to combat the drug epidemic plaguing the nation.
DUTERTE’S DOGMA
His firm advocacy for extrajudicial killings as a means of combating drugrelated offenses has sparked outrage from human rights groups and foreign governments alike.
Duterte’s uncompromising standpoint, often characterized by his infamous remarks encouraging violence against drug suspects, reflects a belief in swift and severe punishment as a deterrent.
Despite mounting criticism and calls for accountability, Duterte has remained unapologetic, viewing extrajudicial killings as a necessary measure in his quest for law and order, a stance that continues to polarize both supporters and detractors within the Philippines and beyond.
sponsored violence.
However, amidst the mounting pressure from international bodies and human rights advocates, Duterte’s government had the resolve to announce its withdrawal from the ICC in 2019, just days after the ICC’s preliminary examination was initiated.
This withdrawal has raised concerns about the accountability for the alleged human rights abuses, as it removes the Philippines from the jurisdiction of the ICC and potentially shields perpetrators from international inspection.

THE ICC EVASION
The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to launch an investigation towards the alleged crimes against humanity commited during Rodrigo Duterte’s regime has brought the spotlight back to the hman rights situation in the Philippines.
This move follows years of international criticism over Duterte’s brutal anti-narcotic campaign, which has been tarnished by extrajudicial killings and widespread allegations of state-
Nanette’s quest for justice has been going on for almost seven years; not any different from other families of other drug war victims. She could remember considering voting for Duterte during the elections, but her son discouraged her.
“If you vote for Duterte, the police will become shameless.”
Alrdin said.
A year later, Aldrin was last seen by his mother and relatives, wrapped in black cloth, cold and stiff as a rock as a victim of the extrajudicial killing.
REIMBURSEMENT
After being put on hold in 2019, and even upon president Ferdinand Marcos’ agreement not to rejoin the court. The decision to return to the International Criminal Court is now being considered by the current president of the republic, thus, giving the ICC newfound jurisdiction to reprobe the case of extrajudicial killing in the Duterte administration.
The court’s decision to reinvestigate the allegations of
extrajudicial killings under the administration of the former president has reignited analysis over human rights violation entailed in the drug war operation.
As the investigation progresses, although being repeatedly refused by Philippine government, it raises questions about the potential implications for Philippine politics and the country’s international standing, while signaling significant step towards accountability for human rights violation. However, in response to this, some legislators tend to protect Duterte from being in trial with the Rome Statute. This resulted to the anger of the victims’ families including Castillo.
She stated in an interview, pointing out to the legislators trying to protect Duterte, “You are laughable – as if Duterte is so oppressed, He’s now loking for protection? From who? No one will touch him here in the Philippines.” WILL JUSTICE PREVAIL?
“Let the ICC come.” This is one step to show that you want to change the old ways.” Nanette Castillo addresses the president.
The reinvestigation initiated by the International Criminal Court into the extrajudicial killings represents a glimmer of hope for the families of the victims who have long sought for justice. While challenges may lie ahead, the ICC’s commitment to pursue the truth and accountability serves as the beacon of hope for those who have suffered long unbearable loss, reaffirming the importance of international mechanisms in addressing impunity and upholding human rights.
The way the government is hindering the continuance of ICC’s probe on Duterte’s case, will Nanette along with thousands of families ever find justice?

DepEd mandates removal of ‘everything’ on classroom walls; receives mixed reactions from Teodorean faculty, students
BY PRINCESS THANIA M. SARAThe Department of Education issued DepEd Order No. 21, a direct ordinance for schools to maintain bare classroom walls by removing all materials including traditional educational posters and other visual teaching aids, August 3.
Signed by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, the order provides guidelines for this year’s Brigada Eskwela, mandating schools to clear school grounds, classroom and its walls to remove all the unnecessary artwork, decorations, tarpaulin and posters starting this school year 2023-2024.
Realizing the goal of the mandate for the learners’ betterment, most teachers of San Teodoro National High Schoo faculty expressed their support and positive responses believing in its affirmative impact to students’ learning.
“Pabor ako sa hakbang na ito ng departmento dahil makatutulong ito para makapagfocus ang mga bata sa kanilang mga aralin. ,” Jessel V. Mendoza, faculty president, stated.
However, some faculty members still favored the old style of classroom set-up where posters and other informative materials are posted and displayed for viewing and

“Nawala ang art sa classrooms. Nawala ang kulay at buhay. Para sa akin, malaki ang naitutulong ng mga iyon sa pangkalahatang pagkatuto ng mga bata. Lumaki kaming maraming nababasa sa silid-aralan at wala naman kaming naging problema doon,” said Arnel A. Caeg, a grade-7 class adviser.
Aside from the purpose the posters serve in classrooms, some educators were also dismayed by their efforts exerted in the past years to come up with creative and informative classrooms.
“Sayang ang aming ipinundar at pinaghirapan sa loob ng maraming taon. Malaki na rin ang aming nagastos sa pagbili ng mga panlagay sa classrooms,” added Caeg. Students also expressed their mixed views and opinions on the matter stating the pros and cons of those changes in the classroom environment.
“Boring but not destructive. For the sake of focus and learning, it is better but the life in classrooms vanished,” uttered Christian E. Umali, a senior high school student.
Despite varied reactions, STNHS teachers responded to the order relying on DepEd’s assurance on the results.

BY RYLLA L. ESPINOrowing cases of committed suicides across the Municipality of San Teodoro particularly in Barangays of Lumangbayan, Calangatan, and Calsapa raised concerns on youth protection management.
According to Police Senior Master Sergeant (PSMS) Edison Gamilla, the victims took their own lives by brutally hanging themselves in secluded places including an area deep within a mountain resulting to a very low process of search operations.
The results of the investigations revealed that the significant reason of the self-destruction instances was depression and mental health disorder.
“Usually, pinipili nilang magpakamatay dahil sa family problems, depression, at mental health issues na meron sila kaya dapat maaga pa lang, naaaddress na ang mga pinagdadaanan nilang ito”, Gamilla, said.
The quick spread of these alarming cases raised an issue towards the ignorance and lack of concern on
the youth inflicting self-harm due to the same set of reasons, especially because more students also began to have suicidal attempts.
San Teodoro National High School (STNHS) recorded an alarming number of cases where students harm themselves due to weak handling of stress adopted from their environment specifically from their family.
With this intriguing statistics, STNHS guidance designate Luningning R. Axalan reminded teachers and parents to extend massive efforts to provide sufficient support for their child in all aspects of their lives to avoid the worst case scenario and save lives.

LGBTQIA+ students call for more inclusive school community
ennifer De Guzman (not her real name) was walking on the pathways of her new school to spend her grade 10 year. It was her first day as a transferee after leaving her former school when the latter didn’t allow her to wear the type of uniform she would like to wear as a lesbian.
De Guzman is just one of the many students in San Teodoro National High School who, over the years, struggle to stand firm for their beliefs and rights for self-expression as members of the third sex.
In 2017, the Department of Education (DepEd) under the Secretary Leonor Briones brought our country’s system of basic education closer to more gender inclusivity. Under the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte, DepEd issued Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy through DepEd Order 32, Series of 2017, which aimed to integrate the principles of gender equality, gender equity, gender sensitivity, nondiscrimination and human rights in basic education.
DepEd issued that LGBTQIA+ students and teachers will be able to express themselves more freely in the gender they identify as without fear of discrimination.
Unfortunately, some students expressed their disappointment against school communities for failing to embrace and accept their gender expressions.
“Gusto lang namin mabuhay nang masaya habang nag-aaral. Hangga’t nagiging responsable at mabuti kaming estudyante, nakapantalon man kami o palda, wala kaming nakikitang rason para hindi kami tanggapin at ituring na kahiya-hiya sa eskwelahan,” expressed De Guzman.

DepEd cuts off admin tasks for teachers to prioritize ‘more classroom time’
Aiming to uplift the quality and standards of teaching-learning process in schools through focusing on the real-world classroom challenges and dillemas, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte implemented Department Order (DO) No. 002 series 2024 which mandates the immediate removal of administrative tasks of public-school teachers, January 26.
In her speech, Duterte stated that Department of Education (DepEd) believes that the core of quality basic education is a creative and quality teaching workforce. Aligned with the MATATAG Agenda, the department is committed to enhancing the delivery of quality education and teacher welfare.
Moreover, DepEd also discussed that administrative tasks shall be performed by school heads and non-teaching personnel because they are designated with the exclusive responsibility to do so.
School division offices have the authority to group deployed non-teaching staffed based on the deployment parameter established by the Bureau of Human Resources and organizational Development.
Teachers acknowledged the new ordinances as a sigh of relief since it consumes most of their time

“Mabuti ito para sa aming mga guro sapagkat mas makakapag-tuon kami sa pagtuturo. Hindi katulad noon na mas marami pang nagagamit na oras sa ibang mga bagay, katulad ng coordinatorships that made the teaching-learning process” Deo Gaveria, a junior high school teacher from San Teodoro National High School said.
Based on the directive, teachers’ extra tasks will be given to employees whose functions are administrativerelated.
Meanwhile, in line with the aforementioned directive, during the transition phase, schools without existing or sufficient non-teaching personnel may be clustered by school division offices within period not exceeding 60 days, with each cluster composed of a maximum three schools.

OrMin, OcciMin student leaders unite in Mindoro convergence
BY RYLLA L. ESPINOtudent-leaders from various educational institutions across the provinces of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro unified in pursuit of knowledge and skills in the first held Mindoro Convergence(MinCon) 2024. MinCon is a 3-day program held on January 24-26, which includes collaborative assessments and sessions focused on Constitution and By-laws, Child Protection Policy, Basics of Parliamentary Meeting, Leadership Guides, socialization and team building activities. PGOM grants cash incentives for OrMin teachers
BY ARVIN M. DE CASTROHonoring teachers’ contribution to the society as provider of quality education, Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito A. Dolor gave Php 2,000 monetary incentives to San Teodoro District teachers last December 6, 2023. In accordance with the Provincial
Ordinance No. 137-2022 titled “An Ordinance Providing Monetary Incentive to All Public Elementary and High School Teachers to be Granted During the Celebration of Teacher’s Day Every October 5 of Each Year, Subject to full Compliance of All Applicable Rules and Regulations.”
“Maliit lang na halaga ang incentives na ito galing sa gobyerno ngunit yung impact nito sa magigiliw na guro ay tagos sa puso,” stated by Dolor.
With this, he showed his gratitude to all of the teachers who strive hard and this incentive is the symbol of their sacrifices and work for Mindoro’s youth.

San Teodoro drivers, commuters dwell on jeepney modernization law
Relying on jeepney operation to provide the food he serves for the sustenance of his family, Roger Santiago raised his concerns towards the Public Utility Vehicle modernization pogram (PUVMP) that was said to cost P1.4 million to P3 million pesos, enough to feed his family with basic meals over a decade.
For more than 14 years of driving, he has been roaming around the northern part of Oriental Mindoro for 13 hours everyday traveling one municipality to another to make his objective revenue.
As a mode of income generation, the four-wheeled vehicle allows him to cover up their regular necessities including educational expenses. With only (P1000) earnings daily, he was able support and send his three children to primary and secondary schools.
The 41-year-old driver pointed out that if the rampant phase-out of traditional jeepneys step foot in the province of Mindoro, him along with other jeepney
drivers will be hard-pressed to surrender their careers and find alternative job otherwise, their families will starve to death.
“Kung makarating yung pagbabago ng jeep sa probinsya natin, malamang sa malamang ay mawawalan kami ng trabaho ng mga kapwa ko tsuper. Hindi naman ganon kabilis makahanap ng trabaho na may sapat na kita, kung wala naman kaming pagkakakitaan, edi siguradong mamamatay kami sa gutom ng mga pamilya namin”
While the government perceives that investing to PUV modernization program will resolve the persistent issues in the Philippines’ land transportaion system, Santiago believes that this will only cause another seed of problem especially for commuting students that was milesdistanced to their learning institutes.
“Kung ganyan ka mahal yung sinasabing modern jeep ay mauubos ang mga jeep dito sa atin dahil kakaunti lamang ang kayang bumili niyan. Kungw walag papasadang jeep sa’tin ay ano

STNHS records highest absenteeism on
‘Catch-up’ Fridays
BY MIA V. FAJILANSan Teodoro National High School recorded an average of 180 absentees during ‘Catch-Up Fridays’ as revealed by a study conducted by Teodorean Gazette. Initiated by Department of Education, ‘Catch-Up Fridays’ is program that aims to provide opportunities for learners to improve their academic performance particularly in reading which is done every Friday of the week. Moreover, it targets to strengthen the foundational social, and other needed skills to achieve the ultimate goal of teaching and learning process. However, despite its notable goal of improving students’ progress, more students tended to lose interest in reading which resulted to absenteeism on Fridays which are supposed to improve their learning. With the statistics at hand, the teachers expressed their views on the matter mentioning the difficulty in developing the love for learning among
some of the learners despite their effort to reach out to them.
“Kung sino pa yung kailangan ng catch-up, sila pa yung nawawala tuwing Friday,” Arnel Caeg, a grade seven adviser, said.
In a meeting spearheaded by STNHS principal Dr. Victorino B. Agellon, he mentioned the alarming situation and opened discussions on how to attend to the problem.
“As teachers, we have to come-up with a variety of teaching strategies to trigger and hold the interest of our learners. Siguro napapagod na sila magbasa nang magbasa so it is our job to rekindle their interests and get them back to school every Friday,” stated Agellon. He further intensified the battle for catch-up through mobilizing the clubs and organizations to come up with programs that would cater and hone the skills of Teodoreans every Friday to achieve the goal of the program as it improves Teodorean learners as individuals.
pang sasakyan nung mga estudyanteng galing pa ng ibang munisipyo papunta ng Calapan”, Santiago asserted.
In 2017, under the governance of former President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) launched PUVMP but eventually had deferral issues due to the immergence of COVID-19 pandemic.
The program was brought back to life last year by the Marcos administration with the aim of serving Filipino commuters a better transportation experience.
On the otherhand, in the viewpoint of a jeepney driver, the decision made by Department of Transportaion was quite impulsive and inconsiderate knowing that jeepneys has been one of the trademarks of Philippine culture.
“Naging parte na ng tradisyon natin ang jeep. Dito nga tayo nakilala ng mga foreigner eh. Bakit nyo tatagtagin yung sasakyang naging parte na ng makulay na kultura natin?” Santiago stated.
Multiple robbery cases in schools frighten students, teachers
nlocked classrooms, missing properties, and obvious signs of robbery had been recorded consecutive times in San Teodoro Central School earlier this year.
The staggering incidents of plunder started on the first week of January swept away properties with an estimated amount of 16,000 pesos.
Determined to retrieve the belongings and to appeal for safer learning environment of students and staff, the school immediately reported the incident towards the authorities.
In response, San Teodoro PNP moved an investigation but found no lead due to lack of evidences and security cameras leaving the school head, Agnes Ribon, cautious and disappointed.
“Simula ng maging principal ako ng school, ngayon lang kami naka encounter ng ganitong case kaya nagpunta agad kami sa mga pulis. May suspect na sila kung sino pero hindi pa nila sinasabi kase walang ebidensya.” Ribon said in an interview.
The police initiate an ocular visit to further investigate the fearless acts of robbery and figure out the holes in the school’s security.
Due to these cases, the school immediately regulate stricter protection policies, limiting the individuals who enter and exit the school campus.
Aside from that, teachers are held responsible of bringing home their working devices to prevent another unlawful circumstances.
Teodorean youth orgs join Project Yey for skill development, empowermentBY ANGELO R. VILLANUEVA
elieving in its goal of developing the skills of the youth and empowering them to take up space in the society, San Teodoro National High School’s big organizations Supreme Student Government (SSLG) and Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) joined Project Yey held at D’ Captain’s Cabin Private Resort, Tacligan, San Teodoro, January 27-28. Supported by Youth Leadership for Democracy and One South Luzon Coalition through the IGNITES grant, Project Yey is a joint project of USAID and The Asia Foundation which targets to cultivate a thriving community of young leaders poised for success and meaningful contributions.
Moreover, it also aims to help many individuals especially the youth today to make change and to discover their leadership style, molding young leaders to be active and inspired in leadership.
According to Yanzly Mirabete, a Grade 11 STEM student in STNHS, being part of project YEY is very fulfilling. It helped him to improve his knowledge about the types of leadership.
“Nakakatuwa yong proyekto kasi bukod sa mababait yong mga kasama ko marami rin akong natutunan at nadiskubre bilang estudyante at kung paano maging isang mabuting halimbawa para sa iba pang mga kabataan ng San Teodoro”, Mirabete said. The group is working on this project in an effort to advance it and get ongoing support from youth. Numerous young individuals in San Teodoro will benefit in many ways from this project and it also help them develop as individuals and as role models for other youth.

WARP BELOW STAGGERED BRICKS
For the second time since 2018, the Department of Education (DepEd) participated in the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) as part of the quality basic education reform plan and a step towards globalizing the quality of Philippine Basic Education. But after almost five years, from the latest result from 2022, it was evident that the Philippines is still lagging behind other countries that are part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It was reported by PISA on December 5, 2023, that the Philippines landed 10th place out of 81 countries that participated. More than 75% of 15-yearold students in the Philippines were below the minimum level of proficiency in Mathematics, Science, and Reading. For the range of five years, DepEd has set its development initiatives only to focus on saturating the learning environment for effective learning, and as the curriculum transitioned to the MATATAG curriculum, it is no surprise that history would still repeat itself by the way the education institution put too much emphasis on the general factors while neglecting the variables that require more focus to achieve more positive changes. The learning center has been to so many modifications and now it’s time to focus on what the students are lacking. In the forum on PISA 2022 National Results, held on December 6, 2023, the Vice President and the Education Secretary Sara Duterte underscored the need to pool all the efforts together to build a more resilient MATATAG
education system. An Education system that aims to improve learning outcomes by prioritizing student and teacher wellbeing and promoting accountability to close remaining disparities in education. This includes initiatives and new learning modes that make learning more efficient.
Despite the goal of the said curriculum, the gap between students and the luxury of proficiency in the subjects being assessed remains relatively huge. As education strives for improvement, modifications, and developmental initiatives; the access to education becomes unreachable for students who are in socioeconomically disadvantaged homes. Tech-based education, as formulated in 2021, seems favorable for those who have actual and convenient access to technology and digital devices, leaving those who are incapable of acquiring these devices stuck in the same old learning mode. It was mentioned in the latest PISA Result from 2022 that 36% of students were in the bottom international quintile of the socioeconomic scale. It became a huge factor affecting the proficiency levels of students as compared to their advantaged peers.
That wouldn’t be a problem if learning materials and equipment were being equally distributed to schools. Unfortunately, that remains a hindrance as well. Facilities, materials, and equipment are some of the most crucial elements for effective learning to occur in a school environment. However, it is such a shame that a portion of more than 30% of students reported that they study in a disciplinary climate that is not favorable
to learning. Not to mention that the index of shortage of educational material in the Philippines was relatively high, blocking us from attaining the quality education that we hoped would lead students to achieve the required level of proficiency in the next PISA examination. Another factor that hinders our course from being well performing in the PISA examination is the lack of teaching staff from 19% to 43%, as well as poorly qualified teachers, which have doubled in five years. The latter appears to be neglected by DepEd that merely focuses on idle improvements. So instead of finding solutions on broad details, DepEd should focus on specific factors that may result in big changes.
“We are already putting the building block to improve the learning outcomes, hopefully in the next few PISAs or the next few large-scale assessments.”
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian stated in the latest forum on the PISA National Results. But the more we stack bricks for improvement, the misplaced bricks on the foundation will never be fixed. It will cause the whole tower to collapse. If DepEd focused on adding improvements without considering the basic factors, our education would temporarily go higher but eventually decline. Key officials of the institution that realize the same should voice out – we need to improve our foundation, not the stacks of development that don’t lead us anywhere. If DepEd would set their minds to setting initiatives that focus on the macro, then and only then, would we be able to attain that excellent results on the next PISA and other upcoming large-scale assessments.

SCrushing Expectations
BY KIARRAH FENDER M. ALMEDILLAtudents of all ages experience academic pressure, which is a widespread problem with roots that frequently extend back to childhood. Even though it is common, a lot of people don’t realize how big of a burden it is or don’t take significant action to lessen it. Considering the critical role that youth play in determining the direction that our society will go, this lack of action is very alarming.
The pressure students face is characterized by intense competition, high expectations, and a relentless pursuit of success. These expectations, coming from various sources including family, peers, and teachers, often manifest in unhealthy ways and take a
unhealthy habits, such as skipping meals and overworking themselves, in quest of academic success. This lifestyle often leads to stimulant abuse, primarily through excessive caffeine consumption, resulting in sleep disturbances and insomnia for a substantial portion of students.
We must prioritize student wellbeing to ease the effects of academic pressure. This involves raising awareness of the issue and promoting a culture that values effort over outcomes. Recognizing and appreciating students for their efforts and sacrifices can go a long way in fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel valued beyond their academic achievements.
In addition, providing resources and support systems for students to cope with stress and seek help when needed is necessary. This includes access to mental health services, promoting healthy work-life balance, and encouraging open dialogue about academic pressure and its effects. Ultimately, by addressing academic pressure and prioritizing student welfare, we can create a more nurturing and inclusive educational environment that empowers students to succeed academically, emotionally, and socially. This approach not only benefits individual students but also contributes to the development of a healthier and more resilient society for generations to come.
“The weight of academic pressure can lead to feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and a persistent drive for perfection.”
toll on students’ mental well-being. The weight of academic pressure can lead to feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and a persistent drive for perfection.
While some may argue that a certain level of pressure can motivate students to excel, research suggests that the negative consequences far outweigh any potential benefits. Students become fixated on grades as a measure of their worth, leading to chronic stress and anxiety. This obsession with academic performance can strain relationships and isolate students from their support networks.
Moreover, the impacts of academic pressure extend beyond mental health. Studies have shown a correlation between academic pressure and divergent behavior in young adults, which can persist into adulthood. The rise in anxiety levels among students is alarming, with potentially devastating consequences such as depression and even suicide. Shockingly, a significant percentage of student suicides can be attributed to the pressure to achieve high marks.
The impact on physical health is also profound. Many students develop

VBeyond the Naked Eye
BY GILVIRT JUDE C. RAMOSn the complicated fabric of governance in the Philippines, the municipality stands as a vital yet often overlooked unit, endowed with corporate status and self-governing powers. In the middle of this administrative tapestry is the town of San Teodoro, whose story has generated whispers and introspection, especially while nearby municipalities go on with events and development initiatives.
Citizens lament the absence of amenities and opportunities found elsewhere, sparking judgments on San Teodoro’s standing. One stirring online post captured the sentiment, criticizing that our town is being left behind. This begs the question: Is San Teodoro truly trailing behind, or is it simply charting its course with a conservative stride?
Despite its classification as a fourthclass municipality, San Teodoro boasts a commendable revenue surpassing seven other municipalities ranked higher, including Baco, Bulalacao, Gloria, Pola, Roxas, Socorro, and Victoria. Remarkably, this feat is achieved despite having the smallest population, estimated at 19,000 to 20,000 according to online provincial records. This economic resilience owes much to the town’s vibrant trade, facilitated by infrastructure supporting the sale of various goods, both wet and dry. San Teodoro’s signature as the “Land of Cascading Waters” reflects its natural bounty, featuring a tapestry of waterfalls and inland waters that serve as magnets for tourists seeking a break in their fresh embrace. From Aras Falls to Botolan Falls down to the picturesque shores of Punta Beach, these attractions represent the town’s allure. Amidst this natural splendor,

ice President Sara Duterte’s use of confidential and intelligence funds has sparked controversy and raised questions about transparency and accountability in government spending. Critics are scrutinizing Duterte’s allocation of funds, with concerns about the lack of transparency and the need for greater oversight to ensure taxpayer money is used appropriately. The confidential fund often envelopes itself in mystery, a secret that may help others and the government but on others, it is rather a cloak to hide. It is for confidential expenses of government agencies that are associated with security forces and intelligence operations. But when Vice President Sarah Duterte used funds meant for intelligence and confidentiality, it caused grave worries among the public and led legislators and other stakeholders to wonder what happened to the fund and how the money was being used. Despite criticism, the vice president stayed composed and defended herself in a speech during the 122nd police service anniversary in Butuan City. She explained that the confidential fund is crucial for addressing unforeseen challenges like terrorism and organized
crime. Addressing concerns about the quick spending of 125 million pesos, she argued that the allocation of confidential funds should prioritize security, regardless of the timeframe for spending. A significant issue arose when Duterte’s office, not traditionally entitled to such funds, received a substantial allocation. Former Vice President Leni Robredo’s office confirmed they had not requested any confidential funds, raising questions about their proper usage. Duterte also warned the public who is contradicting the confidential funds as an enemy of peace. How come the public is the enemy when all they were asking is how and where their money was spent? They are the original proprietors of the money; it came from their diligent daily labor, and it seemed as though she wanted us to donate it without asking again how it would be used. That is supposedly not the response we should be receiving from the vice president of

the Philippines if the money was spent and handled appropriately. Moreover, Duterte’s recent request for 650 million pesos in confidential funds for the 2024 budget has faced backlash for not being clear and transparent enough. Opposition senators are pushing for thorough scrutiny to ensure these funds are used for their intended purpose. Transparency and accountability are paramount when it comes to public funds. Moreover, San Teodoro’s agricultural landscape thrives, encompassing poultry farming, crop cultivation, and fisheries, yielding an abundance of fresh produce that sustains both locals and beyond. With approximately 81% of the population engaged in agriculture and related activities, the town is characterized as an agricultural hub. Notably, initiatives such as the Bigaan Agriculture Cooperative (BARCO) in Barangay Bigaan serve as catalysts for economic empowerment, augmenting incomes and fostering community resilience.
It is imperative to dismiss misconceptions surrounding San Teodoro’s status as the poorest or stagnant in progress. Rather, it is a narrative of measured progress, where incremental steps pave the way for sustainable growth. Similar to a standing store in an area that has a ton of content inside, but nobody is buying from it or supporting it, it won’t become better or expand further. Like the Municipality of San Teodoro, our hometown will not develop and flourish to the fullest, particularly in terms of economic elements, if we will keep overlooking and pointing out its shortcomings. As Mahatma Gandhi aptly stated, “You must be the change you wish to see in this world.” Embracing this ethos entails a shift in perspective, from highlighting shortcomings to championing local endeavors and fostering a culture of support and appreciation for one’s hometown.
San Teodoro beckons not only for recognition of its inherent potential but also for active participation in its journey towards prosperity. Just as a neglected store remains stagnant without patronage, so too does a municipality fail without community engagement and support. Therefore, let us heed the call to action, embracing the spirit of change and collectively nurturing San Teodoro’s evolution into a beacon of progress and prosperity.

ISK: Sowing Knowledge
BY GILVIRT JUDE C. RAMOSn our quest for societal progress, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) has long been hailed as a beacon of hope, symbolizing the potential and drive of our youth. However, a critical examination reveals a plain reality: the SK may not be as morally upright or effective as commonly perceived.
A recent study sheds light on the negative repercussions associated with SK involvement. Far from being a platform for wholesome development, it has been implicated in numerous of negative effects. From a lack of personal time for self, family, and education to the fostering of dishonesty, corruption, and stress, the SK landscape appears loaded with challenges.
Dr. Jose Rizal once proclaimed, “Youth is the hope of our Nation.” Yet, amidst this hopeful rhetoric, we must confront a pressing question: What kind of hope does a youth leader embody when their priorities lie in fulfilling the physical desires of their constituents rather than addressing their intellectual, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs?
A survey examining SK projects reveals a concerning trend. While sports activities dominate the agenda, sectors crucial for holistic development, such as education, receive minimal attention. This uneven focus fails to address the complex challenges confronting our youth, as highlighted by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies. Moreover, the neglect of mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being is evident. Sports, while valuable for physical health, offer only temporary relief from deeper emotional and psychological struggles. SK initiatives must encompass a comprehensive approach to youth welfare, addressing these fundamental aspects of the human experience.
“It is time for SK leaders to broaden their horizons and embrace a more inclusive vision of youth development.”
Spiritual development, often overlooked, holds immense significance. Morality, discipline, and ethical values are integral components of a well-rounded individual, yet they are conspicuously absent from many SK agendas. The scheduling of sports events on Sundays further intensifies this oversight, reducing valuable time that could be dedicated to spiritual growth and reflection.
It is time for SK leaders to broaden their horizons and embrace a more inclusive vision of youth development. Beyond traditional sports-centric programs, other initiatives must be explored: workshops, career guidance programs, educational camps, and spiritual activities are just a few examples. By prioritizing the holistic growth of our youth, the SK can truly fulfill its mandate as a fuel for positive change.
The youth are undeniably the hope of our nation, but this hope should not be deferred to some distant future. It is mandatory to empower the youth of today to become agents of change, equipped not only with physical skills but also with the intellectual, emotional, mental, and spiritual resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.
As we envision a brighter future, let us demand more from our SK leaders and inspire them to rise. The time for comprehensive youth development is now, and it begins with reimagining the role of the SK as a facilitator of holistic growth and empowerment.

Beyond the Bell
BY CINDERELLA RUBY A. ALMIROLt’s no secret that extracurricular activities play a significant role in shaping a student’s holistic development. From sports to journalism, these activities allow students to explore their passions and talents beyond the confines of the classroom. However, with the strict enforcement of the policy, students may find themselves torn between academic responsibilities and extracurricular pursuits.

While focusing on academics is crucial, it’s essential to recognize the value of extracurricular activities in nurturing students’ talents and skills. For many students, excelling in nonacademic domains is equally important for their personal growth and future success. Therefore, a rigid adherence to the policy may inadvertently hinder students from fully exploring their potential outside the classroom.
Moreover, the added responsibilities placed on teachers to oversee extracurricular activities can be overwhelming, especially in the absence of professional trainers. This not only adds to their workload but also raises concerns about the quality of guidance provided to students. Without adequate training and support, students may not receive the necessary resources to excel in their chosen activities. Furthermore, the relentless schedule imposed by the policy leaves little room for students to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Long hours of studying and participating in
extracurricular activities can lead to burnout, negatively impacting students’ mental and physical well-being. This highlights the need for a more flexible approach that prioritizes students’ overall wellness.

juggling academic commitments and extracurricular pursuits. It’s disheartening to feel constrained by rigid policies that fail to consider the diverse needs of students. Finding a balance between academics and extracurricular activities is essential for fostering a supportive learning environment where students can thrive.
Instead of viewing extracurricular activities as disruptions, we should recognize them as integral components of a well-rounded education. By striking a balance between academic rigor and extracurricular engagement, we can create an environment that encourages students to excel both academically and personally.
While the No Disruption of Classes Policy seeks to improve academic achievement, students’ overall development may unintentionally be hampered by its stringent implementation. It’s time to reevaluate our approach and prioritize a balanced education that nurtures students’ talents and well-being. After all, education is not just about what happens inside the classroom but also about empowering students to explore their passions and reach their full potential.

IWeaving the Fabric of Inclusivity
BY PAULA ANGELA B. APOLINARn today’s society, the debate between expression and inclusivity is still heated. The concept of inclusivity has become increasingly prevalent and rightfully so, meanwhile, expressing oneself is the essence of humanity. However, in our noble pursuit of inclusivity, we must not overlook the importance of individual expression. Through expression, we can convey our thoughts, emotions, and unique perspectives to the world.
Whether it be through art, fashion, language, or any other creative outlet, expression is the cornerstone of human communication and connection. The suppression of expression can have detrimental effects on individual well-being. When people are unable to authentically express themselves, it can lead to feelings of alienation, frustration, and even mental health issues. In contrast, when individuals are empowered to express themselves freely, it can lead to increased confidence, creativity, and overall happiness. In contrast, when individuals are empowered to express themselves freely, it can lead to increased confidence, creativity, and overall happiness.
As stated by the American Psychological Association, women are more likely to internalize emotions which results in withdrawal, loneliness, and depression. On the other hand, men have a higher probability of
externalizing emotions that lead to aggressive, impulsive, coercive, and noncompliant behavior. The differences between the two genders may be seen in how expressive they were. Men are more expressive than women, meaning there is no equality in expressing oneself, some sides are still locked from conveying their insights, emotions, and opinions.
“When people are unable to authentically express themselves, it can lead to feelings of alienation, frustration, and even mental health issues.”
While inclusivity seeks to embody diversity, it should not come to conform to a certain standard or suppress aspects of one’s identity that may be deemed controversial or outside the mainstream. By allowing individuals to freely express themselves, we not only enrich our collective culture but also foster a greater sense of understanding and acceptance. So, it is important to recognize that promoting expression does not mean endorsing letting someone have harmful and discriminatory behavior. Rather, it means creating spaces where people feel comfortable expressing their true
selves without fear of judgment or reprisal, while also upholding principles of respect and empathy towards others.
Isn’t it selfish to express ourselves? When we see people connect through something, for example, an opinion, it will be a letdown if we clash their insights for the sake of expressing themselves. But if we are more inclusive, we wouldn’t have a problem joining in groups or organizations. Inclusivity connects people in all its forms, including embracing unity. I’ve seen people being uncomfortable with someone who is very expressive, however, expressing yourself should not come too far to the point where individuals feel awkward around you. Expression should consider limitations.
Although inclusivity is undoubtedly a noble and necessary goal, it should not come at the expense of individual expression. By fostering an environment that celebrates diversity and encourages self-expression, we can create a more vibrant, inclusive, and harmonious society for all. Let us embrace the beautiful tapestry of human expression and weave it into the fabric of our inclusive communities. Grow a community where expression isn’t a barrier to building an organization because even if you are expressing yourself freely, you still can have similarities to the people you want to be associated with.

RANTS & RAVES

We’re just human, we need rest too, please be understanding enough and give us sufficient time.
A RAVE to the students who pushed through the hardest times, staying up all night and giving their all to get things done. They really showed their strong determination and their desire to achieve the top spot.

IWorld Wide Wisdom
BY CYRELLE MAE B. RAMOSn a wide digital landscape, where connectivity and communication thrive on social media platforms, an obscure underworld of cybercrime lurks, preying on the unsuspecting and vulnerable. Scammers, experts at disguising themselves and exploiting trust, have honed their tactics to deceive and defraud innocent internet users. The spread of this so-called virus has been somewhat the citizen’s mistake to entirely trust and fall for clickbait.
The Philippines, like many countries around the world, has witnessed a surge in online scams, particularly on widely used platforms such as Facebook and Messenger.
According to recent reports, thousands of Filipinos have been targeted with devastating effects on individuals and their families. Despite efforts to raise awareness through news articles and public service announcements, the prevalence of scams persists, highlighting the need for a more forceful response.
One of the contributing factors to the proliferation of online scams is the inherent trust placed in digital platforms. With the rise of social media influencers and online personalities, many users are more inclined to believe information shared online without verifying its authenticity. This blind trust creates fertile ground for scammers to operate, exploiting loopholes in cybersecurity measures and exploiting naive victims.
Furthermore, the rapid advancement of technology has left many individuals ill-equipped to cross the complexities of the digital world. Not everyone is techsavvy or familiar with the latest cybersecurity protocols, making them easy targets for cybercriminals. This lack of digital literacy further worsens the problem, as unsuspecting users carelessly click on malicious links or share sensitive information without realizing the risks involved.
In response to the escalating threat of cybercrime, the Philippine government has taken steps to address the issue. The passage of Republic Act 11934, also known as the Sim Registration Act, was a significant milestone in this regard. The legislation aims to regulate the registration of prepaid SIM cards, in so doing reducing the anonymity
that scammers often exploit. While this is a positive step forward, more comprehensive measures are needed to combat the complicated nature of cybercrime effectively.
Education and awareness are crucial components of any cybersecurity strategy. Both the government and private sector have a responsibility to educate the public about the risks associated with online activity and provide resources to help individuals protect themselves. This includes promoting digital literacy programs, organizing workshops and seminars, and collaborating with industry experts to develop best practices for online safety.
“This blind trust creates fertile ground for scammers to operate, exploiting loopholes in cybersecurity measures and exploiting naive victims.”
Furthermore, individuals must take proactive steps to safeguard their personal information and mitigate the risks of falling victim to scams. This includes exercising caution when sharing personal information online, using strong and unique passwords for online accounts, and staying informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and trends.
Combating cybercrime requires a multipronged approach that involves collaboration between government, industry, and individuals. By raising awareness, promoting digital literacy, and implementing robust cybersecurity measures, we can create a safer online environment for all. We must take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our communities from the widespread threat of cybercrime.
A RAVE to the coaches/advisers! Big props to those who have their students’ backs and help them chase their goals and dreams! I absolutely adore them, and I hope they achieve their dreams too.

UNVEILING THE SPLENDOR OF TRADITION
The Untold Saga of Iraya Weavers
n the quaint village of Caagutayan, nestled amidst the verdant landscapes of San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro, a silent legacy quietly thrives. Basket weaving, a timeless craft, serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Iraya community. For generations, weaving intricate patterns has been a cherished tradition, a labor of love passed down from mothers to daughters.
At the heart of this cultural heritage stands the SKMC (Samahan ng Katutubong Manggagawa ng barangay Caagutayan), an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting indigenous craftsmanship. Armed with locallysourced materials such as Abaca (Manila Hemp), Nito (Rattan), and Baging (Vine), the weavers transform humble fibers into works of art, each basket a symphony of skill
Yet, behind the beauty of these finely-woven creations lies a tale of struggle and perseverance.
Felissa Maghusay, a seasoned weaver, recounts the arduous process of gathering materials, trekking into the mountains to collect the raw fibers needed for their craft.
With hands weathered by toil, these women pour their hearts into every stitch, their efforts a testament to their resilience and unwavering commitment.
Despite their dedication, the challenges loom large.
Lidia Mahusay, another skilled artisan, shares the burden of balancing household duties with the demands of
weaving. The long hours spent crafting each basket are met with meager returns, as sales remain sluggish, limited to occasional tourists and distant orders.
For the women of the tribe, education has been a distant dream, with many forced to abandon schooling after primary grades. Yet, fueled by determination, they channel their earnings from weaving into supporting their families, alleviating the burdens borne by their husbands. However, even with support from the Department of Trade and Industry, the struggle persists, as the market for their artisanal goods remains limited.
Amidst these trials, the specter of discrimination casts a shadow over their daily lives. As members of an ethnic minority, the Iraya community faces prejudice and ostracism, their heritage often met with disdain. Yet, rather than succumbing to despair, they stand tall, instilling in their children values of compassion and perseverance, nurturing a vision of a brighter future.
Their story serves as a beacon of hope, a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Through their struggles, they impart a lesson in fortitude, urging us all to persevere in the pursuit of our dreams, undeterred by the judgments of others. Let us heed their call, embracing gratitude for the blessings we possess and drawing inspiration from their unwavering resolve.
ETERNAL MURAL
The Unique Art of Ink
that endures through time, a representation of individuality and
and a canvas that reflects one’s willingness to endure pain for the sake of pure body artistry. Tattooing stands as a unique form of body modification, employing needles or machines to repeatedly puncture the skin and inject ink, resulting in the projection of intricate patterns and stunning designs
In the municipality of San Teodoro, Arvin Arandia, a local artist from Barangay Ilag, embarked on a venture in 2022 to create magnificent works of ink. From lifelike charcoal portrait commissions to vibrant posters and paintings, Arandia, a college student at Mindoro State University, turned his passion for art into a means of supporting his studies and contributing to his family’s Original Gangsta Tattooing, an ancient art form, has endured through millennia, weaving its presence into cultures and traditions worldwide. Evidence of tattooing dates back to ancient times, with notable examples such as the mummy nicknamed Otzi, discovered preserved in ice with over fifty tattoos adorning his body. This timeless art form transcends eras, leaving its mark on human history.
Culture Shocked? Despite its rich history, tattooing is often met with skepticism and disapproval. However, across different cultures and traditions, tattoos hold significant cultural and symbolic meanings. In Polynesian islands, tattoos symbolize courage and strength among warriors, while in Mayan, Incan, and Aztec tribes, they are integral to religious rituals. In the Philippines, Whang-Od—Maria Oggay— preserves an ancient tattooing tradition in the remote

village of Buscalan, inspiring young women to carry on the legacy of this art form. Tattooing is not merely art; it is a reflection of our heritage and cultural identity.
Beautiful Trauma Tattooing is not for the faint of heart. Whether it’s Whang-Od’s traditional hand-tapping method or a modern tattoo artist’s high-tech equipment, pain is an inevitable part of the process. Some may falter at the first prick of the needle, but those who persevere are rewarded with a visual masterpiece—a testament to their bravery, strength, and endurance.
Timeless Beauty often comes at a price, and in the case of tattooing, patience is key. Every drop of blood, sweat, and dedication contributes to the creation of a lasting masterpiece—an expression of one’s identity and values that stands the test of time.
Reputation Tattooing has long been subject to misconceptions and prejudice. Some view it as an act of rebellion or vandalism, tarnishing the body’s natural beauty. However, Arandia challenges these misconceptions, emphasizing that tattooing is a legitimate form of art—a unique way of creating masterpieces using the human body as a canvas. With its roots deeply embedded in history and its ability to showcase beauty and individuality, tattooing transcends mere vandalism—it is a celebration of artistry and self-expression. Tattooing is not just a form of body adornment—it is a timeless art form that speaks to the human spirit. As the ink etches its way into the skin, it leaves behind a lasting legacy—a testament to the enduring allure of the eternal mural.

Do you still remember the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division from everyone’s beloved subject, Math? Planted and nurtured in our minds from an early stage of development, these fundamental skills have remained by our side—etched into our consciousness. They are essential for everyone to acquire, not only as solutions to numeric problems in academics but also as tools for navigating real-life situations. However, are these tools adequately integrated into our curriculum?
Every elementary and junior high school student knows the painstaking and innumerable hard work that is required. Mountains of activities to complete and piles of lessons to learn within the span of a quarter can be exhausting to contemplate. The old K-10 curriculum expected a staggering 11,738 competencies to be mastered. With such a vast array of skills to achieve in a limited timeframe, it’s no wonder that some crucial lessons are left untouched and undiscovered by learners.
This reality has led to the dismal performance of the Philippines in the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment. As disappointing as it may sound, the assessment revealed that the students of the nation are significantly held back, lagging behind by five to six years in competency acquisition. Moreover, the Philippines embarrassingly plummeted to the bottom among 81 countries in reading comprehension, mathematics, and science. This proves that with great quantity comes great difficulty. But with the power of the equation of the new and improved curriculum, enter the “Matatag Curriculum.”

Addition of Nationalism
The Philippines is a melting pot of different cultures, groups, and races. A Filipino cannot be defined in a single category or classification because every individual is different and unique. Despite these differences, one quality binds together and unites the people of the Philippines, and that is their love and pride for their country—nationalism. Nowadays, this quality is slowly slipping through the fingertips of Filipinos. Some neglect their identity while others disrespect the country, they were born in. The Matatag curriculum reignites the sleeping flame inside the hearts of every Filipino child by prioritizing education towards the enhancement of learners’ nationalism.

Good food is more than mere sustenance; it nourishes our bodies and delights our senses. Similarly, our mind craves more than just information – it yearns for knowledge that enriches and empowers. In the pursuit of intellectual growth, the introduction of “Catch-Up Fridays” marks a significant step towards addressing educational challenges and fostering a culture of reading among Filipino students.
Despite the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage and vibrant community, Filipino students have struggled to excel in subjects like reading, mathematics, and science on international assessments. According to the Programme for International Student Assessment in 2022, the Philippines ranked 77th out of 81 countries in student assessment conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Recognizing the urgency of improving educational outcomes, the government introduced Catch-Up Fridays as a strategic initiative to bolster students’ foundational skills and overall academic proficiency.
Feasting on knowledge for the mind
Commencing on January 12, 2024, Catch-Up Fridays serve as dedicated periods for students to immerse themselves in the world of reading. These special days are designed to provide uninterrupted opportunities for students to engage with a diverse array of texts, fostering a love for learning and igniting intellectual curiosity.
Exploring Historical Narratives
Just as a tantalizing aroma transports us to distant memories, reading allows us to delve into the rich tapestry of history. Catch-Up Fridays offer students the chance to journey through different epochs, eras, and civilizations, experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of bygone eras. From the Renaissance’s intellectual fervor to the Industrial Revolution’s technological innovations, students can savor the flavors of history and gain a deeper understanding of the world’s complexities.
Wandering across the world
Traveling to distant lands and experiencing diverse cultures is a dream for many. With Catch-Up Fridays, students can embark on literary adventures that transport them to far-off destinations without leaving the classroom. Through the pages of books and novels, they can immerse themselves in the traditions, languages, and landscapes of foreign countries, broadening their perspectives and enriching their cultural awareness.

Lumangbayan coral reefs face threats amidst human ignorance
BY MARK DANIEL R. CARAIGLumangbayan’s marine sanctuary is critically endangered due to human activities. As of today, corals lost their colors and were deformed and the existence has severly decreased affecting numerous marine wildlife in Lumangbayan San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro.
The fish sanctuary there contains different types of corals, sea grasses, and seaweeds, as well as habitats for saltwater creatures such as the barangay’s favorite, the sea shell called “taktakin,” some various types of fish, crabs, starfish, octopus, and even sea cucumbers.
The reef is visible during low tide since it is close to the shore. So locals there take advantage and do “pangangatihan,” their customary method of catching edible marine creatures during low tide. They bring heavy, sharp objects like hammers, axes, and knives to break up the coral so they can get the marine life that are hidden inside the corals. During high tide, they dive into the reefs and use the method of spearfishing to catch their meal or satisfy their needs.
Trash is also present in the coral reef, including plastic bottles and other items that visitors or locals have left behind, which contribute to the loss of the habitat of marine wildlife.
Locals there said, “Kung hindi man nila masira ang bato, maaari rin na inililipat ng mga nangangatihan ang bato,” resulting in the organism losing its home and crushing its egg or offspring. They also stated that the fish

The Department of Trade Industry MIMAROPA (DTI- MIMAROPA) imposed this bold move. The towns affected were Bulalacao, Bongabong, Bansud, Pinamalayan and Naujan. These town’s hog raisers may encounter loss to their businesses. The agency’s advisory stated, “The prices of basic necessities are automatically frozen at their prevailing prices effective for the duration of the condition that brought it about, but for more than 60 days.” This outbreak will result a big loss to people whose business in pig husbandry. These citizen’s businesses are in crisis because of the incident. This dilemma not just affects individuals but also the economy of Oriental Mindoro. Their economy mainly comes from hog raising in terms of animal husbandry. Based on the Philippine Statistic Authority (PSA), Oriental Mindoro leads the swine production in MIMAROPA with 1.8 growth rate on 2021. Which clearly state that piggery is needed in advancing their economy. The current situation at the 5 towns serves as a warning to other towns to prioritize safety and awareness of effective precautions to ASF to avoid having a price freeze as this situation can lead to a total bankruptcy.

Paano namin mapipigilan kung naging tradisyon na o nakasanayan na ng taga rito.”

Endangered angelshark found dead in Lumangbayan shore
BY AYRA MICHELLE O. ALDABAn endangerd angelshark was found dead on the shores of Lumangbayan San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro on Saturday, February 3. The shark measures 1.06 meters in length and 0.34 meters in width on the wing side, and weighs approximately 15 kilograms. The specimen’s gender is still unknown. There is a fishing hook pierced in its mouth which might be the reason for its tragic death. According to the witnesses, the reason for its death might be the traditional way of catching fish called palapat. This way of harvesting marine resources is
not that lethal but it depends on what they catch.
The locals stated that palapat is a way of catching fish using the tandem of tansi or nylon and a fish hook. The witness also said that the shark was there for over 24 hours because of its foul and rotten smell.
Teodorena Gazette tried to coordinate and contact the Philippine Biodiversity Conversation to know the exact details about its species but there is no lead from them that is why until now, the exact specie of this this creature remain unsure.
According to NOAA fisheries, common angelsharks are critically endangered so sideswiping this phenomenon is no good. Some of the threats to the angelshark are overutilization in commercial and artisanal fisheries, particularly demersal fisheries. The event that occurred on the coast of Lumangbayan will serve as

TEODOREAN ‘BAGUIO’:
Perfect replica of distinct farming
BY MARK DANIEL R. CARAIGYK? Baguio city is a place with cold and windy temperature despite being in the country that is known for having tropical weather where plants such as strawberries, carrots, and cabbages that only survive in a shivering climate are farmed. But what if there is something like that in the hidden parts of San Teodoro? A jaw dropping discovery can be a feast of an eye. Icy-cold environment is required to imitate the wonder of Baguio and San Teodoro takes the advantage of the town’s elevation of ground. BY AYRA MICHELLE O. ALDABAlon Musk’s Brain Chip: The New Face of Future The billionaire and CEO of Tesla and X social media platform Elon Musk unveiled his Neuralink human brain implant in Viva Tech Fair in Paris, France, on June 16, 2023, drawing attention from the business case for accessibility design. In his latest X (former twitter) post, he stated that the first human who received the brain-chip implant from Neuralink is recovering well, meaning that the operation was a success. Moreover, the world’s first patient named Noland Arbaugh,
a 29-year-old quadriplegic has tweeted saying “just by thinking”. With that post Arbaugh is the first person to generate a text using his mind with Neuralink’s implant. This benefits Musk’s brain-chip. In addition, Arbaugh joked that “Twitter banned me because they thought I was a bot, and @X and @elonmusk reinstated me because I am.”
Furthermore, Neuralink discussed that the people who are paralyzed due to the cervical spinal cord injury or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Southwestern Palawan (CGSSWP) station commander Ens. Gabriel Infante stated that because of strong waves during that time, the waves washed off the sands, exposing the shells that was why suspecting that there might be more, they dug up and found the pile covered with sand.

EDITORIAL
BY MARK DANIEL R. CARAIGumangbayan is known as a barangay with decent economy in municipality of San Teodoro and the main factor is their wide bodies of water with bountiful marine treasures. With their proud coral gardens and the recently the phenomenon of harvest season of tuna, the community has more to ask for. Even though they are living at ease, Lumangbayan still strives to pull their resources up. In Sitio Calabugao, construction of crocodile farm for leather and meat production has already begun. Triggering social talks and debates, if it is really needed to be desperate for.
There is a law for abusing animal, Republic Act (RA) 8485-Animal Welfare Act of 1998. Whereas, prohibiting acts of towards animals such as maltreatment, torture and killing. A hindrance for the farm to be continued. This is a guaranteed issue that will be addressed by the higher government and ban the farm or punish the proctor. Truly a brutal act as it can cause extinction of crocodiles.
However, the animal’s life is not the only thing in danger. Calabugao is located at a swampy place with mangroves and a flood prone area. Endangering locals there since the environment in Calabugao is suited for crocodiles. In addition, according to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Science Focus, crocodiles are known for being ferocious and taking the lives of 1000 humans every year.
A post from a group page about Calabugao farm, the farm will hold Philippine Crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis). A critically endangered animals where only approximately 100 are left based from the experts. Surely provoking programs for caring wildlife. Concerning a country issue and an embarrassment to the town.
Regardless of the unwanted traits, the farm will surely improve the towns budget because the leather and meat of crocodile are considered as expensive and will be a tourist attraction for those who want to see crocodiles. But pursuing this project will only go in vain. Moreover, the Philippine Crocodile is nationally protected by law since 2001 by Republic Act 9147: The Wildlife Act. And killing a Philippine Crocodile carries a minimum penalty of six years’ imprisonment or a fine of 100,000 Pesos.
Crocodile farming is not necessary as Barangay Lumangbayan is already blessed by their fisheries. There are many things to enhance the income, instead of putting animals’ in danger, gardening is an option. Therefore, caring for animals especially the endangered and love for nature is observed.

Artificial Intelligence:
BY CHERRY ANN KARLA A. GABRIELrtificial intelligence (AI) is undeniably helpful in every aspect, making our lives filled with cheat codes. Students in the Philippines nowadays rely on AIs to aid them in their schoolwork, like the infamous ChatGPT, which is just a simple type on certain keys, essays, assignments, and speeches are done. It is truly disappointing that the laziness of most pupils continues as they keep exploiting the use of ChatGPT. And that is more burdensome knowing how immense the effect would be as the students learning will be limited.
Recently, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) revealed the result in reading comprehension: The Philippines was ranked 76th out of 81 countries in 2022. The indicators of the test also said that the performance of the top-performing students in the country did not go well in percentage points, while low-performing students registered a 4.3 percent decline in reading comprehension proficiency levels. And these are some effects of too much usage of ChatGPT by the students. This is for sure an embarrassment for the country—not just the students performing poorly, but also the reputation and quality of some high universities. Students always ask ChatGPT to create essays for a certain topic or the answer to a basic question from some story since they are too lazy to read, affecting their comprehension skills. Moreover, with the kind of performance the students are presenting this day, it is fair to say that the presence of ChatGPT in the faces of pupils is not a good thing, and completely putting it to an end will be a good move for the sake of the student’s quality. According to PMC PubMed Central, excessive dependence on ChatGPT can lead to students relying
on it for answers without truly understanding the material, which states that the AI tool is not a good thing to begin with. This kind of tool will only be a burden to humans’ advancement.
This AI tool, called ChatGPT, should be banned. Because the tool itself is the thing that retrains humans to acquire a lot of intelligence. Many countries have already made a move to permanently ban ChatGPT. Countries like China, North Korea, Russia, and 14 more have officially banned ChatGPT since it portrays the act of cheating. The production of this AI tool just gives students a new type of cheating and is limiting everyone’s knowledge to relying on it. Regardless of the negative effects on learners, ChatGPT did help pupils who were struggling with their projects and requirements, having a hard time catching up, and answering all their confusion. ChatGPT really supports students, as it was created for, but the mere fact that this AI tool is not convenient since it is the cause for learners being irresponsible. It also poses a detrimental act, such as cheating, which is a crime in some countries like China that could take one into jail.
It also restricts the user’s ability to learn on their own because they rely too much on it. The over reliance is leading the students to stop learning on their own. As people think that it helps students to learn, it only impedes the way of studying. This new type of technology has interfered to the thoughts of students, instead of doing their best they go and ask AI to do things for them. Stephen Hawking said, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” AI has something to offer as they persuade future generations into depending on AI tools like ChatGPT so they will get dumber until the time comes when they are powerful enough.

Pindoro carries Galerian Shooters, upsets Teodorean Dribblers in their hometown
BY MYRELLE KAYE S. GACUTAN | DALE SEBASTIAN S. BARQUILLAnit Meet ‘24 - Puerto Galera National High School survived a nailbiting match against San Teodoro National High School, edging them out with nine points, 81-72, to be renowned back-to-back champions of the basketball boys held at Lumangbayan covered court, Febuary 25.
Carrying PGNHS in his back, Seth Abraham Pindoro was named player of the game after recording superstar numbers with 33 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Galerian’s coach, Mitchell Lopez presumed that the highlight of his team is their brotherhood.
PGNHS, feeling it from the get go, fired up a 16-4 four run early on. STNHS couldn’t match their opponents’ intensity on defense, pacing them off-track committing turnovers due to travelling calls, Puerto Galera controlled the first five minutes of the game.
But as the game continued, Renz Mancil and Javes Balanquit had taken over the offensive load of San Teodoro, combining with eight points, helping their team to bring the lead to single digits at the end of the quarter, 24-16.
The second quarter was full of drama, with the frustrated Jaja Abe receiving a technical foul after he got into a heated exchange of words with the referee. His teammates have to pull him back because he still wants to argue with the referee.
Using their well-rounded offense and pushing the pace more in fast breaks, Galerians ended the quarter strong, extending their lead to 14 points, 46-32.

San Teodoro couldn’t score inside, due to the presence of Puerto’s bigman Deliverio distrupting shots.
Puerto Galera’s defense was on full display in the third quarter, using the full court trap to pressure the guards of San Teodoro, then converting good defense to better offense, keeping their lead to double digits, 65-50.
San Teodoro had a good run starting with a spectacular sequence which started with a steal at the other end, then Hernandez showing off his dribbling skills passing through his primary defender with ease, then dishing it out to Balanquit who knocked down an open three. Their ferocious guard, Adrian Barquilla, was feeding Abe well in the paint with two consecutive alley-opp finishes. Hernandez evened the game with a silky-smooth banked shot.
Pindero displayed his clutch genes, silencing the crowd with five crucial baskets, one of which is a dagger three over Balanquit with just 1:30 left in the game, helping his team broaden their lead to 12 points.
The time remaining isn’t enough for STNHS to make a comeback, PGNHS jumped with excitement as they are hailed champions of Unit 1 and will represent our unit in the forthcoming Provincial Meet’24.

The Department of Education aims to enhance the learner’s capability to every matter, with the strict enforcement of the policy, every school are forced to postpone their daily trainings and preparation for the upcoming Unit Meet. Coaches and trainers have no choice but to guide them after school hours which can be a factor that hinders the student to rest.
A crucial play from different districts as players from different sports of San Teodoro lost, seeing that these student athletes lack training. The No Disruption of Classes Policy affected the athlete’s skill to engage in more intense training and more extreme game-play, as the potential to achieve success ends up as disappointment.
The responsibilities as an athlete itself by now stay restless,
while others expect them to handle it with ease, but managing both academics and sports can be difficult to accomplish flawlessly. Long hours of training in addition to studying can cause significant harm to a student in terms of physical tiredness. Having a restless routine can seriously damage their well-being as it can be hard for them to take a break.
No Disruption of Classes Policy will indeed boost every learner’s capability to study and concentrate understanding the concept of studying more. Considering that some student player excels at taking part in sports but fails their class, the Department of Education considered the negative effects this may bring to the student’s future such as failing grades and lack of knowledge.
While DepEd intends to provide meaningful learning experiences to the learners, having thoughtful considerations like allowing players to partake from training in a period of having a sports event like Unit Meet to succeed and achieve their goal to triumph, as one of the factors of losing is the lack of training.
Whilst student players suffer from the negative effects of this policy, instead of restraining them from the passion they have for playing, the Department of Education should support and provide them enough time to train. Education is essential whilst being an athlete is to achieve the objective and discover deeper of their potential.
