Through the eyes of 5 landscape artists

Clair Bremner

Kelly Kondis Painting from Melbourne’s misty Sherbooke rainforest, Kelly Kondis creates landscape works full of atmospheric light, the drift and movement of weather and cloud, and the subtle ecological variations that pass by. Kelly’s landscapes are constructed over many layers and in a subdued palette of oils as a means to describe shifts in the weather.

“For most of us in Australia, the aurora australis is something that happens further south in Tasmania. With the recent solar activity, and the camera in our pocket, people are pointing their phones at an ordinary dark sky and pulling something extraordinary out of it. Ribbons of red and green that our eyes simply can’t register on their own made me wonder if it was always there but we previously didn’t have the tools to witness it. That idea sits quietly inside this painting. Glazing layers of red and green were built up beneath the surface in colours that exist in the work the way the aurora exists in the sky. In person they’re subtle but hold your phone up to the painting and the camera finds them the way it finds the aurora; to draw forward what is always present but not always perceived.” – Kelly Kondis

MOSTLY CLOUDS THAT I KNEW

“This was my first time painting on linen and I can say with confidence it won’t be my last. There’s something about the way linen takes oil paint with a subtle, natural tooth that seems to hold the paint in all the right ways. The weave becomes part of the painting itself, adding a depth to my brushstrokes that could be felt as much as seen. That was especially true with a sky like this, where layers of cloud needed room to breathe and move. Working on linen for the first time felt a bit like discovering a material that had been waiting for me and one that could match the scale and richness of the sky I was trying to create.” – Kelly Kondis

“Merwin’s Lament for the Makers reminded me that no work is made alone. Just as he wrote with the poets who shaped him beside him, I paint with the Australian and European Impressionists who taught me how to look. To follow light, weather and the changing atmosphere of the landscapes I love.” – Kelly Kondis

Inspired by her close surroundings along with her love of travel, Kelly balances the qualities and details of realism with a more impressionistic, emotive expression. With compositions full of organic light, subtle texture and smooth layered palettes, her art details the fleeting moments she encounters.

Clair Bremner Aiming to capture the essence of a landscape, Clair Bremner paints stylistically, employing colour, pattern and repetition to create layers of foliage or shifting landscapes. Bold colours and a textural, detailed style create magical worlds that draw us in, tempting us to disappear. Each piece a contemplative, reflective, and oftentimes complex depiction of our natural world, brought to life under her brush.

“Before I began creating this collection I walked grounding myself in the spirit of the land around me, I drove past the blossoms, and fields of cotton , the grape vines, and open spaces, to feel the breath and deep grounding connection of the earth . I reflected on lifes pathways, where we are, the roads filled with detours, the stories within stories, our strengths and courage. This collection of work was created as I explored the grounding landscapes, and the gentle balance of life’s pathways on our heartspace.” – Jac Puntoriero

HEART ON FIRE

103 x 83 cm, acrylic on canvas, raw frame $2,500

“I walk every day in bushland near my house and this particular day the light was illuminating this tree with gold. The effect of the afternoon light often makes me catch my breath, and I have learnt to spend a moment and not rush past it. Light often fills me with a kind of bubbling hope, which I am forever trying to capture in paintings. From this place, my heart dares to dream, create, and imagine what could be” – Lisa Kerr

“The garden of this house glows with autumn colour, but the weeping willow was what caught my eye and led me to paint it. The willow tree and the trees losing their leaves caused me to ponder how a home can be a sanctuary during the changing seasons, both the weeping and the golden times.” – Lisa Kerr

For over 50 years, Trust for Nature has worked alongside Victorians to create a future where our native plants and animals can be valued, protected and thriving. As one of Australia’s oldest conservation organisations, they have unique powers enshrined in legislation to protect Victoria’s natural wonder forever, help meet biodiversity targets locally and globally, and to mitigate the effects of climate change. Trust for Nature works in partnership to accelerate private land conservation in Victoria and help landowners protect nature on their property. They have partnered with more than 1,500 Victorians to protect more than 119,000 hectares of native habitat in Victoria.

Victoria is Australia’s most intensively settled and cleared state. With two-thirds of land privately owned, protecting, managing and improving habitat on this land is vital to safeguard nature.

Through the Land for Wildlife initiative, conservation covenants, habitat restoration, and education projects Trust for Nature protects, expands and improves natural habitats on private land and across the state.

Facing the biodiversity and climate crisis, now is a critical time to protect our remaining native habitats and the plants and animals that rely on them for survival.
