Resilience and Recovery Through the Arts

Artists have known since time immemorial of the healing power of the arts.  But what does science have to say?  Christopher Bailey, Co-Founding Director of the Jameel Arts and Health Lab and the founder of the Arts and Health Program at the World Health Organization, explores the science of the healing power of the arts through real life experiences from around the world.  What explains the feeling we get from singing and dancing together, or gazing out at a beautiful sunset?  What evolutionary purpose does it serve?  Bailey will describe the latest evidence on the arts’ healing ability and why the arts are an essential ‘health behavior’ just like regular exercise and good nutrition - and beyond that, how the arts can contribute to and reinforce community and shared identity, a key contributor to resilience.

THE JOY OF BALI IN OUR BLACK HILLS VILLAGE

The Black Hills Balinese Gamelan “Joyful Heart” invites you to enjoy this informal celebration of Indonesian music. We will perform some of our favorite pieces, teach about Balinese art and life, and invite you all to join us to create the sounds of gamelan!

In October 2017, master Balinese musicians I Made Lasmawan and Ni Kethut Marni dedicated our gamelan instruments and helped us to bring this wonderful music and special sense of community to the Black Hills, our own little village.

You may contact Rod Garnett for information about joining our group or booking us for a performance or workshop: garnett.rodney@gmail.com

The coloful ‘bhoma’ was created by Laurel Antonmarchi, a graphic artist from Mitchell, SD.
