INTRODUCING DR. KIMBERLY FLEMING, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BANDS
Greetings alumni and friends of Illinois Bands! I’m excited to be serving as the assistant director of bands and honored to be joining the distinguished tradition and legacy of the Illinois Bands program. I look forward to working with my colleagues to provide enriching experiences for our students.
I recently completed my DMA in wind band conducting from the University of Michigan. Before my time in Michigan, I earned my MM in wind conducting from Northwestern University and taught high school band in Wauconda, Illinois. I’m excited to be back in Illinois and to reconnect with many of my former colleagues throughout the state.
Before moving to Illinois, I earned my BM in music education from Ithaca College and taught middle school band in New Jersey. I’m an active guest conductor and clinician, and my research focuses on making connections between ensemble conductors and music teacher educators, leading to presentations at the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium and the Instrumental Music Teacher Educators Colloquium. I look forward to creating connections with Illinois Bands alumni and friends and becoming a part of the Illinois Bands community.
INTRODUCING DR. HANNAH RUDY, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC BANDS
Hello everyone! I am thrilled to be serving the Illinois Bands as the assistant director of athletic bands. It is truly an honor to be part of the historic and prestigious Illinois Bands family.
I grew up in Georgia, where I most recently served as assistant director of bands at Kennesaw State University, working with the athletic bands, concert ensembles, and teaching music education courses. Prior to my graduate studies, I earned my BM in music education at the University of Georgia.
After teaching middle and high school band in Georgia, I earned my MM in wind band conducting and repertoire at the University of Colorado, and then completed my DMA in wind band conducting at the University of Oklahoma. During my time at OU, I began my research in artistic score study and ensemble engagement, which I continue to expand and share with the band and music education community. I am an active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator.
I look forward to being part of the long-standing traditions and working with the alumni and community to continue to uphold the distinguished reputation of the Illinois Bands. GO ILLINI!

Jacob Arche is pursuing a master’s degree in music education at the University of Illinois and serves as a graduate teaching assistant for the Illinois Athletic Bands. Jacob earned his bachelor of science degree in microbiology with a minor in music from the University of Michigan in 2018. While at Michigan, Jacob was involved in several ensembles including the University Band, Michigan Basketball Band, and Michigan Marching Band.

Michelle earned her master of music degree in wind band conducting from the University of Minnesota. In 2018, she was appointed visiting assistant professor of music at Emory & Henry College in Emory. Michelle graduated from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst in 2011, earning her bachelor of music education degree as well as a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard.

Blacksburg, Virginia
Isaac received his master of music degree in wind conducting at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory. At UMKC, he served as a band graduate teaching assistant and conductor for the Saxophone Ensemble. Isaac earned his bachelor of music education degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Isaac then served as assistant band director at Discovery Middle School in Granger, Indiana, where he teamtaught concert band, jazz band, and served on the Penn High School marching band staff.

Saxophonist Nathan Maher is currently pursuing a master of music degree from the University of Illinois under the tutelage of Debra Richtmeyer while also serving as a graduate teaching assistant for the Illinois Athletic Bands. He earned his bachelor of music education degree from the University of Illinois where he also acted as a teaching assistant to the award-winning saxophone ensemble.

DEAR FRIENDS,
How fast seven years can go! It seems like only yesterday I was gearing up for my first newsletter and first year at Illinois. As I write this final note to you, I must admit I am not missing the annual knot in my stomach that would normally be forming right about now. But there are SO many things I will dearly miss about Illinois: Thursday night rehearsals in the stadium, the incessant metronome outside my office window for the drum line, my nod to Mr. Harding and Hindsley every time I drove past their headstones on Fourth Street, the great talks and special memories alumni would share with me along the way, the march to the stadium (I’ll never forget it!), the incredible concerts in our world-class concert hall, the countless rehearsals in Harding 141 that were always the highlight of my week, the priceless interactions with our amazing Illinois students, and, of course, the great joy of my daily work with the best band faculty and staff anywhere.
These Illinois years were the best times one could ever hope for. After forty-three years of teaching, 412 concerts,1784 pieces, and sixth-four new commissions, it feels like the time is right to move on to life’s next phase. It has been the privilege of my life to serve as the sixth director of bands at this, our iconic institution, and I will be forever grateful to have been entrusted with the leadership of the Illinois Bands during
this time. Together, we have accomplished a great deal. I am very comfortable saying that the Illinois Bands are in great shape.
Thanks to your support of our work, our students are afforded a word-class music experience while they are here at this world-class university. I am absolutely thrilled with the new faculty that will be joining us this fall. They are all extremely talented, and I could not have possibly asked for a better successor than Kevin Geraldi. He is perfectly equipped to lead this great organization into its bright future. Of course, Barry Houser will continue to do his amazing work as associate director of bands, director of athletic bands, and chair of the conducting area for the School of Music. I shall miss him greatly. Thanks to everyone for your support over the past years.
On a personal note, Beth and I have moved to our happy place— Colorado—where we join her dad, my mom, our two children, a couple of siblings, and many friends who made it here before we did. While it has never officially been home, it had felt like it for quite some time. We both hope to remain very active in the band world we love so much. We look forward to seeing you in the future, as we hope to return to Illinois often. My most sincere thanks to the faculty, staff, and students who made my tenure at Illinois simply the best. When I look back at my career, I feel like the luckiest guy around. All the best to each of you.

I LOVED my time at Illinois and I am grateful to all of you for your support during my seven years with Illinois Bands. In addition to missing you, I will miss the concerts, rehearsals, and conducting classes. I will also miss collaborating with the music education majors to help them find their best student teaching placement.
I am super excited for the next chapter in Illinois Bands history and wish Kevin Geraldi the best of luck as the new director of bands. I first met Kevin at an American Bandmasters Association conference several years ago. After sharing information about our
backgrounds, we realized that his father, Matt Geraldi, was my beginning band director and trumpet teacher in the mid 1970s. Steve and I are proud to share that Kim Fleming and Mike Vecchio, both new faculty members in Bands and Music Education respectively were students of ours at the Ithaca College School of Music. Our band world is amazingly small and wonderful.
I wish you all the very best and hope to see you at a football game, Illinois event, or on the hiking trails of Colorado in the years to come!

ILLINOIS WIND SYMPHONY PRESENTS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL CONCERT FOR AMERICAN BANDMASTERS ASSOCIATION
The Illinois Wind Symphony, under the direction of Stephen Peterson, was invited to present a concert on March 3, 2022, at the National Convention of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, held on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis.
The event, which was shared with the Indiana University Wind Ensemble, was highly lauded by all who attended. The American Bandmasters Association is the most prestigious band organization in the world. Membership is by invitation only. Illinois directors A. A. Harding, Mark Hindsley, Harry Begian, Gary Smith, and Linda Moorhouse are all former presidents of the ABA.
Tradition dictates that each performing band use guest conductors for most of the program. Along with Stephen Peterson, conductors included Barry Houser, associate director of bands at UIUC; Paula Holcomb, director of bands at SUNY Fredonia; Cynthia Johnston Turner, dean, faculty of music, Wilfrid Laurier University; James F. Keene, former director of bands at UIUC; Beth Peterson, associate director of bands at UIUC; and Gary Smith, former associate director of bands at UIUC.
This performance enhanced Illinois Bands unsurpassed legacy of leadership through national appearances. The most recent was a performance of the Illinois Wind Symphony at the College Band Directors National Association Convention in Tempe, Arizona in 2019.

Greetings to our Band Alumni, families, friends, University of Illinois faculty, staff, and students! I hope this finds you well.
We are thrilled to welcome our new director of bands Kevin Geraldi and new assistant band directors Kim Fleming and Hannah Rudy. The Band Alumni are looking forward to working with Barry Houser and this amazing team in 2022 and beyond. We are also looking forward to introducing them at Homecoming.
Homecoming 2021 was a terrific event highlighted by our alumni tailgate hosted in Grange Grove. We welcomed more than 200 alumni and their families and friends to this event and had nearly 200 alumni who joined us on the field and for various Homecoming festivities over the weekend. Thank you to everyone who came out and a big thank you to all of our Alumni Band Board volunteers and for the Marching Illini parents who helped out as well.
The Band Alumni joined the Department of Music and Dr. Jeffrey Sposato, director of the School of Music, in honoring Steve and Beth Peterson as they retired in May 2022. We were treated to a beautiful concert and then hosted a reception with the Band department afterwards. Thanks to all the alumni who attended this event. We will miss you, Steve and Beth!
Recently, the Band Alumni participated in the “First Annual” Alumni Band Camp event featuring our participation in the Pride of Illinois Ceremony. This ceremony included a very heartfelt welcome by Barry Houser and a musical serenade of the incoming band members by their fellow Marching Illini. Although the weather was a disappointment, the alumni who were able to attend enjoyed the evening and agreed that this
should be an annual event. Band Camp was then topped off with an ice cream treat provided by the very generous donations of several of our Band Alumni. It was the perfect way to enjoy the final day of pre-season prep and the Marching Illini members were very thankful!
We are looking forward to a fun and busy Homecoming 2022 weekend as the University combines the Homecoming celebration with Foundation Weekend. The Illinois Foundation is celebrating the successful completion of their huge fundraising campaign and the Marching Illini will be a big part of the festivities planned. Homecoming 2022 includes many of the traditional activities, but also includes participation in the Friday night celebration outside Memorial Stadium featuring the Marching Illini, fireworks, a street fair and more!

Greetings from the iconic and historic Harding Band Building!
What a year it has been. We have traveled and experienced many transitions, departures, celebrations, arrivals, and many emotions along the way. We celebrate the retirement of Steve and Beth Peterson as they start a new chapter in Colorado. During their time at Illinois, they elevated the quality of our ensembles, the music education experience, and the culture of the University of Illinois Bands. They were and will continue to be impactful mentors, educators, conductors, and simply amazing people who cared deeply about each person they came into contact with. We will miss them dearly but wish them well in Colorado—and extend an open invitation to return for any of our events or just to visit anytime.
We welcome three outstanding new faculty to the Harding Band Building this fall. After a very quick search, we hit a true grand slam with the hire of Kim Fleming, assistant director of bands and Hannah Rudy, assistant director of athletic bands. They are impacting our program positively in their short time at Illinois already. In addition, we conducted a national search for the seventh director of bands at the University of Illinois. We are elated to welcome Kevin Geraldi and his wonderful wife Gina and daughter Sarah. Kevin brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and vision for the future of Illinois Bands. Personally, I have enjoyed and look forward to working with our new faculty this year.
Before I share more about Band 154 and the 2022 season, I want to share my sincere gratitude to our staff who assisted in getting us through some major transitions and changes this summer and fall. Joy McClaugherty continues to juggle more items each day and does it with a smile on her face. Aaron Kavelman has contributed significantly with regard to percussion on both the concert and marching band areas. A B1G thank you to our fantastic grad students: Michelle Bell,
Isaac Brinberg, and Jeremy Sison for their tireless work in assisting me this past spring and summer. Together, we were able to keep the ship sailing forward!
Now we shift to #band154 and the 2022 edition of the Marching Illini. We are so grateful that we have been able to get the band together for the kick off the 154th season of the Nation’s Premier College Marching Band, the Marching Illini. The musicality, The System, energy, and culture of excellence that is created by the Marching Illini continues to enhance the University of Illinois and the experience of our fans, friends, alumni, and students.
As we start this season with True Illini Spirit and an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE, I want to thank you for contributing to our March Forth campaign. The 2022 campaign smashed all previous fundraising records for this event! Your generous donations are being used daily and will benefit the students in the Marching Illini for years to come.

Some highlights include seven home games in Memorial Stadium, a trip to Pontiac, Illinois over the Labor Day weekend, performing an exhibition performance for the Chicagoland Marching Band Festival, a return to Soldier Field for a Bears halftime show, and a road trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the ILLINOIS vs Michigan game.

Patrick Duncker attended Champaign Central High School in Champaign, Illinois where he served as drum major for two years. He is a senior studying oboe performance. Patrick has been a member of the Marching Illini since his freshman year, marching in the tenor saxophone section. This fall will be his first season serving as drum major for the Marching Illini. Patrick has his Smith Walbridge Clinics Drum Major First Class in the traditional style.
MATTHEW FELBEIN
Matthew attended Naperville Central High School in Naperville, Illinois where he was a member of the Marching Redhawks for four years, serving as drum major for two years. He is a sophomore studying choral music education and has been a member of the Marching Illini since his freshman year when he was in the mellophone section. This fall is his first season serving as drum major. Matthew also serves on the Marching Illini’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access (DEIA) committee. Outside of band, he is a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity, and music director for Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the men’s music fraternity. In addition, Matthew has received his Drum Major First Class in the corps style at Smith Walbridge Clinics.

Poorna attended Metea Valley High School in Aurora, Illinois where she served as drum major for one year. She is a sophomore pursuing a dual degree in community health and trombone performance. Poorna has been a member of the Marching Illini since her freshman year, marching in the trombone section for one year. This fall is her first season serving as a drum major of the Marching Illini. She is a brother of the Kappa Kappa Psi Nu Xi chapter and currently serves as the alumni relations officer. Poorna also serves as a health communications intern at the University of Illinois.

JAMES F. KEENE OBITUARY
James F. Keene retired from the University of Illinois in 2008, where he held the titles of director of bands and Brownfield Distinguished Professor of Music. Appointed in 1985, he was only the fourth to hold the director of bands position since 1905.
During his tenure at Illinois, the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony, under his direction, were selected to perform for every major music conference in the US, toured throughout the US and Europe, and his ensembles performed in America’s most prestigious concert halls including several appearances at historic Orchestra Hall in Chicago, as well as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York.
His ensembles produced an extensive recording series on several labels. These recordings have been broadcast on National Public Radio in the US, as well as such diverse places as the United Kingdom, Tokyo, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Sydney and on Vatican Radio. Prof. Keene was past-president of the American Bandmasters Association and served as chairman of the board of directors.
He was a past-president of the National Band Association, having previously held several other NBA offices. Additionally, he was a member of the board of directors of the historic Goldman Memorial Band of New York City as well as a frequent guest conductor of that iconic ensemble.
honored as International Outstanding Bandmaster of the year by Phi Beta Mu in a ceremony at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and in 2018, he was presented with The Midwest Clinic Medal of Honor.
Professor Keene earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, where his major professors included Dr. William D. Revelli, Elizabeth Green and Larry Teal. Previous to his appointment at the University of Illinois, Professor Keene taught at all levels, including building nationally-recognized programs at East Texas State University (now Texas A & M–Commerce) and at The University of Arizona.

For several years, he was chairman of the ABA/Ostwald Composition Contest and was a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Band Research. Up until his death, he served on the board of directors of the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
In addition to membership in several professional and honorary societies, Prof. Keene was an Evans Scholar, past-president of the Champaign Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation. In 1993, he was named honorary member of the board of directors of the International Percy Grainger Society and was presented with the coveted Grainger Medallion in recognition of his noted performances of Grainger’s music in recordings and on five continents.
In 2002, he was named honorary life member of The Texas Bandmasters Association, only the fifth person so honored in their sixty-five-year history, and in 2009, he was installed into the Bands of America Hall of Fame in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 2013, he was

Jim Keene’s true loves were his wife Alice, their son Sean, his two granddaughters, every aspect of teaching and making music, mentoring future music educators, and the game of golf.
He grew up in a rough neighborhood in Detroit but was resourceful and found a way to earn money by caddying at the Western Golf and Country Club in Redford, Michigan. Because of his skill and work ethic as a caddy, he was awarded an Evan’s Scholarship which provided him full tuition and housing at the University of Michigan. He loved the integrity and history of the game. That integrity clearly carried over into his teaching and conducting. In retirement, Jim was invited to become a member of the Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Dornoch, Scotland, a membership he maintained for the last eight years.
Jim leaves behind his wife of forty-eight years, Alice Keene; son, Sean Patrick Keene; and granddaughters, Kylie Charra Keene and Olivia Grace Keene. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Keene Kuzdel. Jim is predeceased by his parents, Orville and Lucille Keene; sisters, Patricia Keene and Janet Keene Connally; and brother, Jerome Keene.

SALLY EMRICH PIERCE AND C. DAVID PIERCE SCHOLARSHIP
A PIERCE FAMILY LEGACY

Last spring, Illinois Bands named Mike Tuleo as the first winner of the Sally Emrich Pierce and C. David Pierce Scholarship. The new scholarship endowment was established by David Pierce BME ’54, MME ’55 along with family members and friends in loving memory of Sally Emrich Pierce BME ’53, MME ’55 (1932–2021). Married for sixty-seven years, Sally and David continued their contributions to the worlds of music and education for decades to come upon leaving the Illinois Bands program.
The new scholarship will be awarded each year to an undergraduate student studying music education who works on the Illinois Bands student staff and displays outstanding musicianship.
David and Sally both played in the Illinois Concert Band directed by Mark Hindsley. Sally was placed as principal baritone as a freshman. David, a year younger, started in one of the other bands on trombone. David was moved to the Concert Band his junior year. David and Sally both worked at the original band building. Sally was a copyist, handwriting parts for Mark Hindsley and David worked in the properties department with Eldon Oyen. They first met when David surprised Sally in the hallway with a cymbal crash! David regretting it immediately, seeing how Sally was so startled.
At first, Sally rebuffed David’s requests to go out on a date with him. She replied to him, “No strings attached.” For several rehearsals after hearing this response, David carried a string with him to every rehearsal. During the rests and stoppage in rehearsals, David could be seen playing with a piece of string. Finally, Sally relented. They were married in December 1953.
Sally received the A.A Harding Award in 1953, with her name engraved onto a plaque that is still on display in the hallway of the Harding Band Building. Her other accomplishments at Illinois included her participation and service as president of the Alpha Lambda Delta chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota and her participation in the Oratorio Society. The rest of her music career focused on teaching piano and baritone, while also playing baritone in the Woodstock City Band for a spectacular thirty years. In 2012, composer Timothy Mahr composed “Löwenzahn March” on a special commission by Sally’s family for her eightieth birthday.
David also played in the football band known today as the Marching Illini. The football band went to the 1952 Rose Bowl, where David remembers leading cheers from the front of the band, cheers that were
caught on television. The game was the first-ever national telecast of a college bowl game. On the return trip from the Rose Bowl, the football band members pooled their lunch money to take a detour to the Grand Canyon—a decision David says was worth every penny.
After getting his master’s degree, David worked in a small school for a year. At the end of that first year, in the was drafted. He served in the United States Army for eighteen months. Upon his discharge, David and Sally moved to Woodstock, Illinois where David taught middle school band and eventually became the director of bands at Woodstock High School. He taught there until his retirement in 1988. David was also the director of the Woodstock City Band for over twenty-five years.
All four of David and Sally’s sons went on to study at Illinois and were in the Illinois Bands. David Michael (BM ’79, MM ’80, DMA ’86), John (BM ’80, MM ’82), and Eric (BM ’83, MM ’85) graduated with degrees in bassoon, voice, and oboe, and Kirk (BS ’86) studied computer science. David Michael joins his mother, Sally, on the wall in the Harding Band Building as another recipient of the A.A. Harding Award.
Almost seventy years later, Kathryn (Katie) Pierce, granddaughter of David and Sally, enrolled in the Illinois music education program and is soon to graduate with the same degree as both David and Sally. She walks by Sally’s plaque on the walls of the Harding Band Building, and plays and works in some of the same rooms where her grandparents met and worked for years. Katie not only strives to uphold the tradition, excellence, and loyalty to her school, but to her grandparents who came before. The world she will enter as a teacher will be vastly different than the one David and Sally entered, but the Illinois legacy is and always will be, steadfast.
