This past year was a year of creativity, connection, and growth at Arts Umbrella. More than 20,000 young people across the Lower Mainland and throughout Canada took part in our programs - from classes and outreach initiatives to performances by the Arts Umbrella Dance Company and Theatre Troupes. Their creativity and commitment continue to inspire us every day.

We are proud that nearly 80% of these students participated at little to no cost, thanks to our community partnerships with schools, healthcare facilities, childcare centres, and community organizations. These collaborations help ensure that access to high-quality arts education remains open to all.

Our reach continues to expand across Canada and beyond. Through Connected North, we bring arts programming to young people in remote and northern communities. Our Creative Launchpad students are pursuing post-secondary arts studies across the country, while our PostSecondary Dance Program attracts dancers from around the world to train in Vancouver.

Arts Umbrella was built by the community - and continues to thrive because of it. From the artists who contribute to our annual Splash Art Auction, to the donors, corporate partners, and foundations who champion our mission, your support sustains us. With less than 5% of our annual funding from government sources, private and individual giving remain essential to all we do.

Arts Umbrella provides full and partial scholarships to students in select programs who are keen to stretch their artistic boundaries in a mentor-based learning environment. These include: Creative Launchpad, Dancers of Today, McCall MacBain Cultural Leadership Scholarships, and RBC Auditioning Scholarships.

Carol Henriquez Honoured with Business / Arts Peter Herrndorf Arts Leadership Award

On October 28, 2024, we were proud to celebrate our Co-Founder, Carol Henriquez, as she received the 2024 Peter Herrndorf Arts Leadership Award at the annual Business / Arts Awards Ceremony in Toronto, in recognition of her exceptional leadership in the arts sector.

This prestigious national honour recognizes Carol’s unwavering commitment to shaping Canada’s cultural landscape, and her lifelong dedication to

arts education. Through her visionary leadership, Carol has inspired generations of young people to live creative, authentic, and courageous lives.

As Co-Founder and long-time executive director of Arts Umbrella, Carol’s passion and guidance have empowered countless children and youth to discover their artistic potential, develop essential life skills, and embrace the transformative power of the arts.

Innovation with Rentals

Through our Rental Program, we aim to increase earned revenues while cultivating community in new and meaningful ways. By doing so, we expand our role as a vital contributor to the Granville Island and greater Vancouver arts ecosystem.

We were fortunate this year to secure several rentals from the film industry—an area we have been actively working to enter and grow. In January, the Jack and Darlene Poole Theatre was rented for a singleactor film setup, and during the summer months, two additional film crews utilized the space for their latest productions. These opportunities allowed us to build valuable relationships within the film community while also expanding our on-site technological capabilities. The equipment upgrades and technical experience gained through these rentals have strengthened our capacity to accommodate larger, more complex projects in the future, further positioning the theatre as a versatile and attractive venue for both live performance and film production.

In April, we hosted our first-ever wedding, transforming the Atrium and patio into an elegant setting. The space beautifully accommodated a reception, a festive cocktail hour, and dinner for 100 guests.

Arts Umbrella Dance in Collaboration with Symphonic Cinema 2024 Union Gospel Mission x Arts Umbrella Workshops

On October 23 and 24, 2024, Arts Umbrella was thrilled to partner with the Union Gospel Mission’s (UGM) Eastsiders after-school program to deliver a special series of visual arts workshops.

The initiative, organized by Polygon Homes, a valued supporter of both organizations, brought together 23 children ages 8-12 for a drawing and painting experience inspired by Tom Thomson’s iconic winter landscapes. With guidance from Arts Umbrella artist instructors, participants discovered new ways to express themselves, applying foundational art techniques to create their own winter-inspired pieces.

Several of the students’ artworks were later selected to appear on Polygon’s 2024 corporate holiday card, celebrating their creativity and the power of community collaboration.

In March 2025, 16 talented dancers from the Lindsay Mearns School of Dance were invited to participate in the filming of LOSS, a breathtaking production created by Symphonic Cinema, inspired by The Planets by Gustav Holst, starring Emma Thompson and Greg Wise.

This extraordinary production, including choreography by Lukas Timulak, will be brought to life on stages around the world, including performances by the London Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. The National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands will proudly open the tour in January 2026.

For our dancers, this experience was an incredible opportunity to work on a world-class production, collaborate with internationally renowned artists, and showcase the exceptional talent nurtured at Arts Umbrella on a global stage.

Season Finale PROGRAMMING SPOTLIGHT

Season Finale, generously supported by RBC and the Wesik Family Foundation, saw students from Arts Umbrella’s Lindsay Mearns School of Dance take to the stage of the Vancouver Playhouse from May 22–24, 2025, for a series of stunning performances.

Season Finale is the culmination of a year of dedicated training in the studio, where students have the opportunity to collaborate with locally and internationally renowned choreographers and educators. This year’s Season Finale program featured choreographic works by

celebrated artists including Crystal Pite, Sharon Eyal, Aszure Barton, Johan Inger, William Forsythe, and more. The performances were attended by more than 1,600 audience members, providing students with invaluable live performance experience.

Season Finale features students from Arts Umbrella’s Professional Training Program and Post-Secondary program, which are generously supported by the BC Arts Council, the Government of Canada, and RBC Foundation.

Nancy Chan Creative Horizons Community Program Theatre, Music & Film Presents Hadestown: Teen Editon

Arts Umbrella is committed to making its programs accessible to young people. The Nancy Chan Creative Horizons community program, generously supported by the Chan Family Foundation, is one example of how we collaborate with community partners to remove barriers to participation, and empower children and youth to explore their creative voices. Based out of Arts Umbrella’s Surrey Centre location, the program includes two streams; Artful Afternoons and Teen Arts Studio.

Artful Afternoons

For ages 8–12, this after-school program offers theatre and visual arts activities for students from several Surrey elementary schools. Participants are bused to and from Arts Umbrella and receive a healthy snack to support full engagement.

Teen Arts Studio

Open to youth ages 13-19 across Surrey, this stream offers Acting for Film and Visual Arts classes that introduce students to a variety of art mediums and acting techniques while building skills and confidence. Many alumni have continued to post-secondary arts training.

The Mainstage Production of Hadestown: Teen Edition, presented in March 2025 by the Robert M. Ledingham School of Theatre, Music, & Film, was a significant highlight of the season and exciting for many reasons. It was the first production of our new Sunday Advanced Musical Theatre Troupe, created when our two weekday Musical Theatre Troupes reached capacity. It was also the first time we have been able to present a play that is currently in its first Broadway run. This beautiful story of love and trust was a big challenge for the students, and they all rose to the occasion; the epic story of Orpheus and Eurydice is completely sung through, and in addition to that, of the 15 teenage cast members in the show, six of them played instruments live onstage while performing.

The excitement of a Tony Award winning musical on the stage of our Jack and Darlene Poole Theatre resulted in seven of the eight performances being completely sold out.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2024

On Monday, September 30, 2024, Arts Umbrella once again honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to remembering the children who endured the Indian Residential School system and those who never returned home. This year, Arts Umbrella continued its commitment to learning from and with Indigenous communities by offering opportunities for young people and their families to engage with the stories, strength, and creativity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.

For 2024, Arts Umbrella introduced a new orange shirt designed by contemporary Coast Salish artist and Arts Umbrella Board Member James Harry (Nexw’Kalus), created specifically to mark Orange Shirt Day. All proceeds from shirt sales, along with contributions made on the day, were donated to two organizations supporting Indigenous youth empowerment and well-being - Urban Native Youth Association and All My Relations Indigenous Society.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the many individuals and partners who made this year’s observance possible, including dedicated Arts Umbrella staff and volunteers, as well as community collaborators across Granville Island and beyond. Their support helped create a space for reflection, learning, and connection.

Vancouver Pride Parade 2025

Arts Umbrella staff and students came together once again for the 2025 Vancouver Pride Parade, celebrating joy, creativity, and community. On August 3, the group filled the streets with colour - sporting newly designed “ART FOR ALL” shirts, waving pride flags, sharing a spirited choreography, and leading the way with a vibrant, staff-crafted “Art is For Everyone” banner.

This year’s participation offered another meaningful opportunity to uplift 2SLGBTQAI+ voices and highlight Arts Umbrella’s ongoing commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, and equality for all.

Splash 2024

On Saturday, October 5, 2024, the 42nd annual Splash Art Auction - proudly presented by Nicola Wealth - filled the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver with extraordinary art and community spirit, raising vital funds to support Arts Umbrella’s bursary and program initiatives. We remain deeply grateful for the incredible network that makes Splash possible: our dedicated Co-Chairs, the 90 talented artists who contributed their work, the many gallerists, sponsors, donors, and the remarkable team of volunteers who brought the evening to life.

More than 60 Arts Umbrella student performers added their energy and artistry to the event, while over 900 business and community leaders joined us in person and online to advance accessible, high-quality arts education for young people across Metro Vancouver.

Dana Claxton Steve Driscoll

Dana Claxton is a critically acclaimed artist working in film, video, photography, installation, and performance. A member of the Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation in southwest Saskatchewan, she lives and works in Vancouver. Her practice explores Indigenous beauty, the body, spirituality, and socio-political realities through contemporary media. Challenging colonial narratives, her work asserts Indigenous futurity, resilience, and continuity rather than placing Indigenous culture in the past. Drawing on popular culture, Hollywood imagery, and mass media, Claxton exposes stereotypes and reclaims agency over Indigenous representation. Rooted in Indigenous feminism, her work centres Indigenous women, confronting colonial and patriarchal structures while amplifying strength, power, and visibility. Her monumental work Headdress – Shadae and Her Girlz, donated to Splash 2024, exemplifies her commitment to Indigenous self-representation and reimagining power in contemporary visual culture.

Steve Driscoll is a significant figure in Canadian contemporary art, known for reimagining the landscape tradition through abstraction, material experimentation, and scale. Born in Oakville, Ontario in 1980, he received his BFA from OCAD University in 2002. His vibrant, immersive paintings translate encounters with the Canadian wilderness into an abstract language that evokes memory and sensation rather than specific locations. Using a distinctive process combining oil pigments with industrial urethane, Driscoll creates fluid, richly textured surfaces that recall geological formations and the passage of time. His work aligns Canadian landscape concerns with international abstraction while retaining a strong sense of place. Recurring Dream, generously donated to Splash, exemplifies this approach. Driscoll’s large-scale installations and exhibitions in galleries, museums, and public spaces highlight his ability to work at a mesmerizing scale, with recent museum shows at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

2025 Nicola Wealth Invitational

Held on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the beautiful Point Grey Golf & Country Club, the 28th annual Nicola Wealth Invitational to Benefit Arts Umbrella delivered another memorable day on the course. Led by Co-Chairs Cameron Conn and Johanie Marcoux, this year’s tournament welcomed nearly 200 golfers and raised more than $357,000 in support of Arts Umbrella’s bursary and program funding.

The impact of the Nicola Wealth Invitational continues to be profound - these funds expand our ability to offer accessible, high-quality arts education to children and youth across Metro Vancouver and beyond. With the help of 60 enthusiastic volunteers, an online auction featuring more than 90 exceptional items, and over 30 participants in the Get Golf Ready Clinic, the success of this event was truly a collaborative effort. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making the day such a success.

The 2025 Inspiring Creativity. For Good. Awards were presented at the Vancouver Playhouse on May 22 in conjunction with Arts Umbrella Dance Company’s Season Finale performance. These annual awards honour the achievements of the Arts Umbrella community, corporate partners, volunteers, and staff.

Concord Pacific received the Inspiring Corporation Award for their extraordinary commitment to Arts Umbrella, beginning in 1985, with support of our programs. David’s leadership of the Arts Umbrella Association was invaluable and the organization would not be where we are today without his service and wise counsel.

This year, artist Ted Jolda was recognized as Inspiring Splash Artist. Ted has contributed to Splash for 30 years, and we were incredibly honoured to mark this extraordinary milestone, and for his friendship and generous contributions to Arts Umbrella and the community we serve.
