A competent artist who never got the breaks, John Myatt might have remained a footnote on the page of art history. True, not many artists can lay claim t,9 having written a Top 1979 -but he wanted to be 40 t뿌또gs he had -3 illy Games known for his ad, t as a one hifwonder.

Casting around for ideas, Myatt was'commissioned from a friend tQ ��PY_�.pai�ting by the French Post Impressionist Raoul Duty. Tlitco was so good i! had fooled experts. At the time Myatt had -shrugged �ff the 'compliment b�t now it played on his mind.

Then Myatt received a call from a 'Professor Drewe' who claimed to be a nuclear physicist wanting to purchase paint ings to decorate his home. One evening Drewe phoned Myatr� "I too\,one ofyour paint ings to Chri�tie's, and they said it �as �rth £30000." Myatt says "That was the moment that the legitimate business stopped and the crime began. Myatt said: I can't believe it. Are you a\\fare it's painted in emulsion paint?" "My vanity was quite gh?stly," Drewe says. "The mistake occurred here. My reaction• w interest.· He worried that his fraud would be discovered.

And indeed it did - in 1999 John wa entenced to l2 months for Art Fraud and eventually serv언 6 months in Brixton Prison. Upon his release the arresting officer contacted John and became his first customer for one ofJohn Myatt's 'Genu ine Fakes'.
