“I love the gestural mark making that comes naturally from my body when I start a painting. The first step is very important and all intuitively. Then, the structural work comes next; the challenges of working out relationships between the shapes (that was created intuitively) into a successful composition. Whether I work on an abstract or a representational, this challenge is the same. I like to experiment with shape, line, unexpected color relationship, value, primitive brush stroke, and texture. When I paint a landscape, my focus is on creating a certain mood. I want to transform a common scene into a work that is unique.”-Monique Carr
