hey come for everything from mountain biking to night photography and hiking to evening campfires. They come hoping to spot some of the last indigenous herd of Big Horn sheep in the Tucson Basin and to view the 80-arm saguaro, the tallest ironwood tree in Arizona, as well as what’s left of a Titan Missile Silo. They come by the thousands—a little under 200,000 per year, in fact. We’re talking visitors, of course, who arrive at Ironwood Forest National Monument—which takes its name from one of the longest living trees in the Arizona desert—to view the rugged, wild desert sanctuary’s stunning scenery and explore its secrets. This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of the proclamation creating Ironwood Forest National Monument, which was one of the first national monuments established as part of the Bureau of Land Management’s National Conservation Lands system. National Conservation Lands represent the most ecologically significant and exceptionally unique landscapes. Ironwood Forest National Monument spans over 189,000 acres and is home to some of the world’s oldest ironwood trees, as well as mesquites, palo verdes, creosotes, and saguaros. There is also a wealth of desert wildlife, and cultural sites include ancient petroglyphs and the remnants of historic settlements. “In one respect, the Ironwood Forest hasn't changed much in the 25 years since its proclamation,” says Tom Hannagan, president, Friends of the Ironwood Forest. “That was the original intent, as it is part of the Conservation Lands program." Visitors can also take in the stunning mountain ranges, including The Silver Bill, Waterman, and Sawtooth, which rise from 1,800 to more than 4,200 feet in elevation. In all, it’s a truly unique showcase of the Sonoran Desert. “As a nearly native Tucsonan, I realized that I had never seen a Gila monster in the wild. When I visited Ironwood the first time, I spotted one and it was so special,” says Stefanie Boe, tourism and marketing manager, Discover Marana. “The wildflower, cactus blooms, and birds were also just spectacular. It feels like you have the desert to yourself, and it's there just for you. It's pure magic.” For information: www.discovermarana.org. ven though it’s hot here in the Valley, there is still plenty to do and see. Explore a variety of destinations for a cool summer escape. From surf parks to water parks and splash pads to museums, there are so many ways to chill out.

Enjoy thrills and chills at one of Metro Phoenix’s water parks. Yes, even in the desert water fun abounds. First, many hotels and resorts offer day passes, so even if you’re not staying at a locale overnight, you can enjoy the ambiance and water features (check with the location directly or at www.resortpass.com). JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (www.jwdesertridge.com) has the 140,000-squarefoot AquaRidge WaterPark, complete with a lazy river, three water slides (including a dual-person vertical wall tube slide), splash pads, a waterfall tower, the adults-only Sky Island, and more. Chill Out Indoors While in many areas of the country people head outdoors during the summer, in Metro Phoenix, we head indoors. Spend time at these fun locations while soaking up the air conditioning. During Prohibition, hundreds of hidden bars popped up nationwide. These secret spots would be nicknamed speakeasies because they required guests to “speak easy”—or quietly—about them. While Prohibition is long gone, hidden speakeasy-style haunts continue to be popular in the Valley. Here are some stunners.

STRAIGHT UP WHISKEY BAR

There is a telephone booth situated just off the main lobby at Hotel Adeline. Given it's 2025, anything other than a smartphone feels out of place. Or is it? The telephone booth is a hidden door, and that door is the clandestine entrance to Straight Up Whiskey Bar, a secret lounge that requires a password to enter (ask those at the front desk to provide it). THE CAVE

Located in Downtown Phoenix, popular experiential bar Quartz features gemstonethemed cocktails. While impressive on its own, hidden behind the main bar space is a secret doorway. Those who sneak through will find The Cave. This “gem” inside of Quartz features rose-gold mirrors from floor to ceiling and features a menu inspired by deserts around the world. POPPY’S OFFICE

Paul Keeler, often called Poppy, was a giant in the Arizona culinary scene, beloved for Liberty Station American Tavern & Smokehouse and Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse, among others. When he passed away in 2021, his family honored him by creating Poppy’s Office. Tucked in near Liberty Station Terravita, the speakeasystyle cocktail bar is a near replica of Keeler’s private office, complete with personal mementos, family portraits, and memorabilia of Keeler’s favorite teams. 34522 N.
