PHOENIX + SCOTTSDALE

Elevated Mexican Cuisine

Longtime restaurateur Damian Rangel brought Santo Agave to Peoria, where he serves elevated Mexican cuisine in an inviting atmosphere.

The restaurant reimagines traditional Mexican dishes with a modern twist, serving them in a warm, high-energy atmosphere inspired by the vibrant spirit and service culture of Mexico City and the Riviera Maya.

Settle in here and get comfortable—the concept emphasizes Mexican hospitality that is non-transactional and deeply personal, encouraging you to linger in a casual environment. The goal, Rangel says, was to create a space where dining feels like a shared cultural experience rather than a routine outing.

The menu showcases regional Mexican influences, including Sinaloa-style seafood, Jalisco beef, Yucatán seasoning, and elevated takes on traditional dishes such as dry fideo noodle soup. The from-scratch dishes are cooked using a Josper charcoal oven.

Wine, cocktails, and tequila also take center stage here—make sure to try a curated three-tequila tasting paired with chocolate, which is designed to highlight regional differences and flavor profiles.

High Energy, Global Fare

JING has officially arrived in Scottsdale, bringing its signature blend of globally inspired cuisine, subtle Asian influence, and high-energy dining to the Valley, marking the brand’s first Arizona location and fourth nationwide (Aspen, Denver and Las Vegas).

The name translates to “energy,” a fitting moniker for this stunning locale that’s known just as much for its atmosphere—waterfall chandeliers, champagne glass-inspired columns, a statement wraparound bar, immersive audiovisual elements, gold accents, and a fun vibe—as it is for its food.

The menu spans handcrafted sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi, raw bar selections, hand-folded dumplings, shareable plates, Wagyu hot rock, grains and noodles, chilled and fire-roasted shellfish platters, and Josper-grilled meats.

A robust happy hour is offered from 3-6 p.m. daily, which turns into an elevated dinner service, which then builds to a sophisticated lounge atmosphere as the evening unfolds. DJs subtly activate the space beginning at 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, carrying the atmosphere until close.

HOME SWEET HOME

Nestled in Roosevelt Row, Downtown Phoenix’s walkable arts district known for its galleries, independent restaurants, boutiques, and vibrant street art, is the new Matilda’s All Day Café, a warm and inviting concept serving coffee, meals, and cocktails from morning to night.

The restaurant is set in a 1,860-square-foot historic 1914 bungalow that has been reimagined into a layered, livedin café. You’ll enter through a grassy garden and front porch

before moving toward the service counter and bar area.

There are two intimate dining rooms, a lounge anchored by custom millwork, and a back patio designed for both daytime and evening use.

Choose from pastries from local bakers, as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items. There’s also beer, wine, and cocktails.

And of course, the coffee is always available.

Italian Flavors From Texas

Those from Texas know the lure of il Bracco, known for its buzzy atmosphere and housemade Italian-inspired cuisine. Now, those in Scottsdale can experience the lure, as its restaurant group opened a new location—the first outside of Texas—here in late February.

The Scottsdale locale’s menu centers on made-from-scratch Italian-inspired cooking with an emphasis on quality ingredients and precise technique. Think pastas, breads, and desserts, alongside fresh seafood and prime meats butchered in-house daily. The fan-favorite Spicy Gemelli, featuring fresh housemade noodles in a vibrant vodka sauce, made the Scottsdale menu, as did the pan roasted Mediterranean Sea Bass with mint gremolata and broccolini, and a USDA Prime NY Strip Steak. And don’t forget the Italian Sundae—topped with chopped pistachios, whipped cream, and a generous drizzle of local Queen Creek Olive Mill olive oil—for dessert. 6160 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; ilbraccorestaurant.com/scottsdale

TELEFÈRIC

You may be visiting Scottsdale, but you can still experience the flavors of Spain. Telefèric Barcelona, the authentic Barcelona-born tapas restaurant group beloved for its lively atmosphere and Spanish cuisine, recently opened a Scottsdale outpost at Scottsdale Fashion Square, bringing the flavors, culture, and celebratory spirit of Spain to Arizona.

Telefèric Barcelona’s menu centers on vibrant tapas and signature, authentic paellas that are meant to be shared.

IS TERRIFIC

Standout dishes include patatas bravas, jamón ibérico de bellota, gambas al ajillo, pulpo Telefèric with truffle and pimentón purée, and creamy croquetas filled with jamón or king crab.

The paellas are prepared to order and served with socarrat—the prized crispy rice layer at the bottom of the pan. Our recommendation? Pair it with a glass of sangria for the perfect meal.

Where to drink and dine al fresco this spring

Patio season is back. Across Greater Phoenix, restaurants are opening their doors to sunshine, desert breezes, and glowing sunset skies, offering countless ways to enjoy the Valley’s vibrant dining scene outdoors.

VIEWPOINTS

Some patios shine because of the views they deliver. Perched dramatically along Camelback Mountain, the terrace at Elements at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain (5700 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley; sanctuaryaz.com) remains one of the region’s most breathtaking outdoor spaces. Floorto-ceiling glass doors open to a sleek patio where you can enjoy cuisine and cocktails while watching the sun dip behind layered desert peaks. Lucero Rooftop Lounge & Terrace at Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU (7 E. University Drive, Tempe; omnihotels.com/tempe) offers a similarly cinematic vantage point. The rooftop terrace frames sweeping views of “A” Mountain and the Valley skyline, where sleek lounge seating surrounds glowing fire features and an infinity-edge pool. The vista plays just as much a role in the outdoor experience at Spire Bar at the Arizona Biltmore (2400 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix; arizonabiltmore.com). Overlooking the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, the dramatic patio—complete with circular bar, fire, and water features—blends bold architecture with the surrounding desert landscape.

Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows

At the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Tía Carmen (5350 E. Marriott Drive, Phoenix; tiacarmendesertridge.com) celebrates the Sonoran Desert in every direction. Natural wood tones, woven textures, and native landscaping frame views of the surrounding desert mountains while an adobe-style fireplace and latilla structures immerse you in a true Southwestern setting.

ROMANTIC RETREATS

Patio season also invites romance.

At Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows (6114 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; andazscottsdale.com), sculptural seating and glowing fire pits frame a serene patio where you can dine under desert skies, while the Adobe Bar & Grill at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Course (2400 Biltmore Estates Drive, Phoenix; azbiltmoregc.com) offers a hidden gem of a romantic retreat. Shaded ramadas and towering palms overlook the lush fairways and surrounding mountain silhouettes, making it an easygoing setting.

Epic in all ways, the courtyard at LON’s at the Hermosa Inn (5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley; hermosainn.com) unfolds around a trickling fountain surrounded by desert flora, plush seating, and five wood-burning fireplaces. The peaceful setting makes it ideal for an intimate brunch or a romantic dinner beneath the stars.

And at Old Town Tortilla Factory (6910 E. Main St., Scottsdale; oldtowntortillafactory.com), which is set within a historic 1930s adobe home, one of Scottsdale’s most romantic patios is an idyllic retreat set amongst mature trees and softly

glowing string lights. Here, the stunning 1,400-square-foot flagstone patio is surrounded by green vegetation and shaded by 100-year-old pecan trees.

GARDEN AND COURTYARD ESCAPES

Some of the Valley’s most beloved patios feel more like hidden gardens than restaurants.

In Queen Creek, the sprawling patio at Queen Creek Olive Mill (25062 S. Meridian Road, Queen Creek; queencreekolivemill. com) transports you to the Mediterranean countryside. Gather beneath pergolas and olive trees while enjoying olive oil tastings and housemade fare on Arizona’s only working olive farm.

Italian-inspired patios also flourish across the Valley.

At Veneto Trattoria (6137 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale;

venetotrattoria.com) screen shaded tables with dimmed lights capture the warmth of a neighborhood café in northern Italy, where you can settle in and enjoy classic pastas, sumptuous seafood, and an exceptional list of Italian wines. Marcellino Ristorante (7114 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; marcellinoristorante. com) also offers an elegant al fresco setting where shaded tables, climbing greenery, and soft lighting evoke the relaxed charm of an Italian piazza.

Meanwhile, il Bracco (6160 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; ilbraccorestaurant.com) channels the spirit of a lively café terrace. The spacious patio is anchored by a beautiful stone fireplace, with crisp umbrellas shading clean-lined tables that invite sunset dinners paired with spritzes and fresh pastas.

SOCIAL SCENE

Some patios are as much about energy as they are the food. AZ88 (7353 E. Scottsdale Mall, Scottsdale; az88.com) remains one of Arizona’s most beloved patio hangouts. Overlooking Scottsdale Civic Center Park, the stunning outdoor space

pairs modern design with an unmistakably artistic spirit. Contemporary lighting and clean-lined furniture create a stylish backdrop for AZ88’s famously inventive martinis and eclectic menu.

At JING (10605 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; jingrestaurant. com), sleek dual patios bring cosmopolitan style to Scottsdale with striking fire-and-water fountain features at their center. Chic lounge seating and glowing light fixtures in the restaurant’s signature green and gold hues create a polished see-and-beseen setting.

Social Tap Eatery (4312 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale; socialtapscottsdaleaz.com) offers two distinct outdoor experiences, both buzzing from open to close. The groundfloor patio features plenty of screens for game days, while the second-level patio Balcony Bar is also casual, with fire pits, views of Old Town Scottsdale, and comfortable seating that’s a perfect place to relax and watch the sun go down.

At Oak & Fork at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino (15406 N. Maricopa Road, Maricopa; caesars.com/harrahs-ak-chin),

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: KONA GRILL; 32 SHEA; OAK & FORK AT HARRAH'S AKCHIN CASINO; AZ88.

comfortable lounge seating and soft evening lighting create a peaceful desert backdrop for Italian-inspired fare and craft cocktails, but it also doubles as chic, open-air lounge space for those seeking a quick break from the lively casino floor.

In Downtown Phoenix, The Pemberton (1121 N. 2nd St., Phoenix; thepemberton.com) offers one of the most eclectic patio experiences in the city. Vintage trailers, colorful murals, and shaded garden seating create a playful outdoor space that feels equal parts party and art installation.

Newly opened Starfish (8390 E. Via de Ventura, Scottsdale; starfishhospitalitygroup.com/scottsdale) introduces tropical Asian coastal design to Scottsdale with a spacious patio filled with plush banquettes, circular booths, and rattan ceiling fans. Festoon lighting and garage-style doors create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow ideal for groups and long evenings over cocktails and seafood-driven dishes.

NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITES

Patios also serve as familiar gathering places for family and friends.

Few restaurants capture that spirit better than Postino (multiple locations; postino.com), where patios filled with communal tables, cozy lounge corners, and warm string lights invite you to settle in with glasses of wine and bruschetta boards.

At 32 Shea (10626 N. 32nd St., Phoenix; 32shea.com), what was once a 1980s drive-thru photomat has transformed into a leafy outdoor oasis. Towering trees shade patio tables by day, while bistro lights glow around a Buddha statue, water feature, and sculpture garden once the sun goes down.

Long-time Valley staple Kona Grill (multiple locations; konagrill.com) also offers a lively sun-filled patio where you can sip mimosas while digging into sweet and savory brunch favorites in the morning, followed by some of the Valley’s best sushi and Asian delights at lunch, happy hour, and dinner.

And finally, the bold, buzzy Boo and Henry's Memphis Pit BBQ Restaurant (16500 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; booandhenrysbbq.com) pairs Memphis-style barbecue with a laidback patio where the scent of slow-smoked meats drifts through the air, giving the space the feel of an inviting backyard cookout.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: VENETO TRATTORIA; BOO AND HENRY'S MEMPHIS PIT BBQ; STARFISH

Creative cocktails to sip, savor, and swoon over

Across the Valley, bartenders are leaning into drama, creativity, and indulgence, crafting drinks that arrive with smoke, sparkle, scent, and serious personality. These are the truly unique sips worth the drive, where each glass feels like an experience and every pour delivers a show that starts the moment it hits the table.

DRAMA QUEENS

If spectacle is the point, Maple & Ash (7135 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; mapleandash. com) delivers with the unapologetic IDGAF Old Fashioned ($65). Jefferson’s Tropics bourbon meets Pedro Ximénez, amaro, maple reduction, and chocolate truffle bitters, and the drink is finished with 24k gold. Rich, layered and unapologetically decadent, it refuses to be subtle and practically demands a photo before the first sip.

At Wolf by Vanderpump at Caesars Republic Scottsdale (4747 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale; wolfbyvanderpumpscottsdale.com), Sheep’s Clothing ($23) reinvents the sour with flair. Jalapeño vodka and bergamot liqueur blend with fresh strawberry, lime, and jalapeño honey, and is topped with airy aquafaba foam, cotton candy, and 18 karat gold flakes.

Fantasy follows at The Guest House Scottsdale (7135 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; welcometgh.com) with Tulgey Woods ($60). This ever-changing seasonal margarita arrives in miniature potion bottles nestled in moss beneath a cotton candy tree, with rose water and orange blossom fog drifting across the table.

Sexy Roman at W Scottsdale (7277 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; sexyroman. com) turns dessert into drama with the Stiletto Espresso ($40). Chopin vodka, Italian coffee liqueurs, and cold brew sit beneath a vanilla smoke bubble guests pop

themselves, releasing a warm aroma before the first sip. The result is indulgent, aromatic, and interactive.

At Kembara at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (21050 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix; kembaradesertridge.com), The Sympathizer ($25) spotlights Akashi White Oak Japanese whisky infused with genmaicha tea and toasted rice. Cherry wood smoke adds warmth, depth, and a lingering toasted note that makes each sip more complex than the last.

And at Caldwell County BBQ (multiple locations; caldwellcountybbq.com), do not miss the Texas in our Blood ($12), a twist on a margarita with both blood orange and activated charcoal in the build.

FLAVOR OBSESSED

At COURSE (7366 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale; courserestaurantaz. com), I’m A Dude, Playing The Dude, Disguised As Another Dude ($18) showcases serious layers of flavor as vodka infused with clarified pesto and toasted rice is paired with clarified pineapple, orange liqueur, Calabrian chili oil, and black garlic oil.

Hecho Libre (4743 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; miralinaresort.com/scottsdale-restaurant) similarly goes big, delivering smoky swagger with The Salva el Tigre ($22). It boasts Vida mezcal, Amaro Nonino, passionfruit, grapefruit, and cinnamon for a cocktail that balances smoke, citrus, and subtle spice.

Across The Pond (4236 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; acrossthepondphx.com) presents the Suntory Sling ($16). Suntory Toki whisky, citrus, genepy, and house sling syrup are poured over pineapple ice that melts slowly, transforming the

drink from crisp and structured to juicy and lush.

At Platform 18 (3626 E. Indian School Road; bartershake. com/platform-18), 21 Hours to Louisville ($21) blends bourbon, Fernet Branca, PX sherry, caramelized peach, spiced pear, and fresh mint. It is whiskey driven yet surprisingly light on its feet.

The Gold Rush ($22) at The Boulders Resort & Spa (34631 N. Tom Darlington Drive, Carefree; theboulders.com) refreshes a classic with housemade honey infused with mint, adding herbal lift and a polished finish to the bourbon base.

PLAYFULLY OVER THE TOP

The Pemberton (1121 N. 2nd St., Phoenix; thepemberton.com) embraces nostalgia with its Cocktail in a Bottle Series ($13 to $15). Jarritos-based drinks range from a Tajín-kissed grapefruit Paloma to a guava soda spiked with mango chile rum and topped with boozy whipped cream, each one playful and party ready.

At Antidote at The Westin Kierland (6902 E. Greenway Pkwy., Scottsdale; westinkierland.idaypass.com), the NaHCO Tres Margarita ($21) blends tequila, mezcal, and guava, and is finished with a glitter dusted tortilla chip crafted with buzz button flowers. The garnish gently tingles the palate, making the drink as interactive as it is flavorful.

Camello (2525 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; camellobiltmore. com) serves Blue Balls ($18), a frozen blend of blanco tequila, passionfruit, pineapple, and Supasawa. Blue spirulina gives it an electric color without altering the flavor, resulting in a vibrant, beachy escape in a glass.

Jade Bar at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa (5700 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley; sanctuaryaz.com/ dining/jade-bar) elevates tiki with the Mai Captain ($24). Aged rum and Aperol meet tropical juices and a playful Captain Crunch garnish that adds texture and whimsy.

The Sympathizer at Kembara
Cocktail in a Bottle Series at The Pemberton

CLASSIC, UPGRADED

On The Rocks (2000 W. Westcourt Way, Tempe; marriott. com/phxtm) offers the Lavender Collins ($18), combining Hendrick’s gin, fresh lemon, and lavender syrup with crisp club soda for a floral refresher that feels effortless yet refined.

Litchfield’s (300 E. Wigwam Blvd., Litchfield Park; wigwamarizona.com) delivers a Smoked Old Fashioned ($19) with Knob Creek Single Barrel bourbon, maple syrup, and black walnut bitters, unveiled beneath aromatic smoke for a dramatic reveal.

Dirty Pearls ($23) at STK Steakhouse (3815 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; stksteakhouse.com) pairs gin, olive brine, and orange bitters with a caviar garnish, adding a briny pop and a luxurious texture to every sip.

Thirsty Lion (multiple locations; thirstylionrestaurant.com) leans cozy with the Salted Caramel Moroccan Coffee ($13), blending rum, coffee liqueurs, caramel, and whipped cream into a sweet, spirited nightcap.

Seasonal flair shines at LOVECRAFT (3128 E. Cactus Road,

Phoenix; lovecraftphx.com) with Hatching Into Spring ($14). Hatch green chile-infused Japanese whisky adds gentle heat, while Midori brings melon sweetness, and Amaro Montenegro layers herbal depth. Fresh lime keeps it lively, and mint, cantaloupe, and melon balls finish the chilled coupe with a playful polish.

Citrus is also back in style. At Buck & Rider (multiple locations; buckandrider.com), Diego Rivera ($17) refines the Paloma with Corazón Blanco Tequila, housemade grapefruit thyme cordial, and Giffard Pamplemousse. Shaken over fresh ice and garnished with thyme, it is bright, herbaceous, and impeccably balanced.

Ingo’s Greyhound ($10 glass; $25 carafe) at Ingo’s Tasty Food (multiple locations; ingostastyfood.com) blends Prairie Organic Gin with freshly squeezed grapefruit and lemon juices.

Finally, Tía Carmen at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa (2401 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; tiacarmendesertridge.com) presents the Hibiscus Desert Balloon ($28). JCB Gin mingles with hibiscus and soothing aloe beneath a translucent bubble you'll pop before sipping.

THINGS TO DO

IN THE VALLEY

6 Arizona James Beard Award Contenders

Arizona’s culinary ascent continues. This year, 12 local hospitality leaders earned James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist nods. Often called the Academy Awards of food, the honors culminate June 15, and as with the Oscars, the nomination itself is significant. Here are six of this year’s contenders to try when you’re visiting the Valley.

1

FNB RESTAURANT

FnB co-founder and executive chef Charleen Badman, a 2019 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef in the Southwest, is one of just 20 chefs nationwide who is in the running for a national title (Outstanding Chef). Celebrated for vegetable-forward, seasonally driven cooking, she spotlights ingredients from Arizona farms and her own garden. Her 2019 win marked the first time in more than a decade an Arizona

chef had claimed the regional honor. 7125 E 5th Ave., Scottsdale; fnbrestaurant.com

2

CHULA SEAFOOD

Kyle Kent, head chef of Chula Seafood, is up for Best Chef in the Southwest, for his ability to prepare impeccably fresh seafood despite living in the desert. Kent builds ever-evolving menus around seasonality, daily catches, and team inspiration with a “dock-to-plate” mentality, purposefully sourcing directly from San Diego’s Fisherman’s

Wharf and selecting other sustainable purveyors. Multiple locations; chulaseafood.com

3 INDIBAR

Indibar is a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant. Since opening last March, the Paradise Valley restaurant has drawn diners with vibrant regional Indian dishes, layered spices, and refined presentations that honor tradition while embracing modern technique, all within a chic, cinematic setting. 6208 N. Scottsdale Road, Paradise Valley; theindibar.com

4 CAFÉ MONARCH

Advanced sommelier Zac Adcox has been the architect for several venues’ cocktail programs, most recently Café Monarch in Scottsdale, which is lauded as among the nation’s most romantic restaurants. A semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, Adcox’s approach centers on balance, ensuring each pour complements the ultra-fine dining menu. 6939 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; cafemonarch.com

5 LITTLE RITUALS

Hospitality veteran Ross Simon, co-owner of Little Rituals and proprietor at Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour, is a semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service at Little Rituals. Recently named Best U.S. Hotel Bar at the 2025 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards, the Downtown Phoenix bar is known for seasonally themed menus featuring housemade syrups, rare spirits, and top-notch hospitality. 32 S. Central Ave., Phoenix; littleritualsbar.com

6 ATRIA

Rochelle Daniel, partner and executive chef of Atria in Flagstaff, is a semifinalist for Best Chef in the Southwest and a recent competitor on CBS’ debut season of America’s Culinary Cup. Previously recognized as a James Beard Emerging Chef, Daniel blends seasonal ingredients—some foraged—with a fine-dining French technique to create thoughtful, cleverly plated dishes. 103 N. Leroux St., Flagstaff; atriarestaurant.com
