So, here we are...SUMMER. Finally. We can feel the anticipation when the weather apps (7 in total) start popping up on a daily basis. The turf starts to come alive with color and once again feels like plush carpeting under our feet. Butterflies start to emerge from their cocoons and land right in our bellies, as we think about the magic in store over the coming months. Along with our cornerstone Polo, CabCab events and private special events, we have some big dreams coming to fruition. We are delving into the large-scale concert arena. The opportunity to partner with huge, national acts to make a difference for charities that we hold dear means the world to us. Weâ€™ve always wanted to grow on this scale. The fact that we can achieve our goals with purpose and a mission, harkening back to our not-for-profit roots, feels awesome and just...right. We are excited to invite you along on this journey. A CONVERSATION WITH DAVID YURMAN At Arranmore, we are passionate about making connections with like-minded folk, who share our vision and enhance the experience of everyone entering the gates of our farm. When we asked David Yurman, our team sponsor for the Chicago Polo Women’s Invitational tournament, about the connection between design and equine, we knew we’d found yet another kindred spirit. “The only thing I like as much as designing is riding my horse.” ~David Yurman A love of horses and a lifetime of riding inspires David Yurman to explore equestrian themes in his jewelry. David’s first equestrian design unknowingly introduced his signature cable. This bracelet with twisted silver wires and gold end caps he called the “Trail” bracelet. It was an expression of his passion for riding 30

that he still wears every day. Based on his design, David made a second bracelet for his wife, Sybil, adding pink tourmalines and emeralds to the end caps. Horses’ shoes kick up shallow chunks of grass from the field, leaving divots throughout. At the halfway point of the match, spectators are invited to take a glass of champagne with them out to the field and replace the divots, leaving a smoother, safer field for the remainder of the match.

The match-winning goal scored during the extra chukker when score is tied at the end of regulation (also known as “Sudden Death”).

In grass polo, the ball is a hollow but hard plastic composite with a 3” diameter. Wooden balls were originally used centuries ago but would split.

C: CHUKKER/CHUKKA

F: FIELD

7- to 7.5-minute period of play, interrupted only by a goal or the ball going out of bounds (7 minutes is standard chukka time, plus up to 30 seconds to finish the play). 34

H: HORSE

The Arranmore Polo field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide. The most popular way to view a polo match at Arranmore? Fieldside tailgating, of course!

The traditional term is “polo pony,” however, polo is actually played with adult horses, usually on the small side of around 15 “hands” high. (A hand is 4 inches, measured up to the withers.) A true pony is 14.2 hands or less.

I: INTERVALS

A 3.5-minute break is taken between each chukka. During this time, players must change ponies and cannot play the same horse for two consecutive chukkas.

L: LEAGUE

Arranmore Farm + Polo Club has been a hub of Chicago polo since 1999, hosting private matches between professional league players. 2018 is the fourth year of public tournaments.

M: MALLET J: JOHN GREENE

A Naperville resident since 1960 and founder of john greene Realtor, John, with his late wife Patti created the pastoral setting that is Arranmore Farm + Polo Club.

K: KIDS

Kids are a big part of events at AFPC, from dancing under the stars at CabCab, to the programs provided by our sister company ArranmoreArts. Family is everything.

Outdoor polo mallets are made of bamboo and hardwood. The head has a blunt end and an angled end; however, the ball is struck with the broad/long side of the mallet, not from the ends.

N: NEARSIDE

The horse’s left side, from which a horse is led, tacked up, and mounted. This stems from the days when mounted soldiers wore swords on their left hips.

P: PLAYER POSITIONS

#1 “Forward,” attacking offense, front runner, accurate shooter, defends against opposing #4. #2 Secondary offense, picks up passes or rebounds, great fluidity, defends against opposing #3. #3 Aggressive attacker, strategizer, and scorer, often highest-rated player and/or Team Captain. #4 “Back,” goal-defender and strong back-shooter.

Q: QUALIFIER O: OFFSIDE

The horse’s right side. Polo players do take shots on the offside, stretching across his/her own body and over the horse.

A series of matches of regional teams, the top winners of which will meet in a semi-final “round.” In the World Polo Championship, there are 5 qualifiers, with one team from each region. 35

R: RATING

Players, horses and matches are “rated,” a.k.a. ranked with a “handicap,” which is an average of the number of goals scored over the course of a career. A player with a +1 rating is not as formidable as a player rated +7; a match with a +20 rating is sure to be an exciting one!

S: SIDEBOARDS

Wooden sideboards form a physical border around a polo field. If the ball goes over a sideboard, it is out of bounds and play stops.

X: X FACTOR

Polo players have to have a magical “X Factor” to be in the right place on the field at the right time in order to assist their teammates, or receive the ball to make a shot on goal.

V: VETERINARIAN

AFPC has a vet on-call at all times, should any injuries or issues occur to the horses. The safety and health of these majestic creatures is priority one.

W: WEDNESDAY

Wednesday can mean just one thing at AFPC: “Wine Down Wednesday!” The tailgating events allow folks to park fieldside and unpack their picnic tables and fun décor for an evening of nosh, camaraderie, sunshine, and casual polo.

Y: YOGA

Yoga is widely considered the best equestrian athlete stretching routine. Polo players especially must be extremely limber, flexible, and able to bend and twist quickly. “Sunset Yoga” is also a favorite AFPC event.

T: TACK

Tack is the equipment put onto horses. Saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, martingales, and breastplates are all forms of horse tack. Equipping a horse is often referred to as tacking up.

THE WINE DOWN WEDNESDAY PHENOMENON We thought, “Hey, let’s do some casual Wednesday games. The guys are here playing. It’s fun to grab a glass of wine and watch them, for a midweek respite. The sunsets sure are pretty… WAIT A MINUTE! What if we open this to the public! Will anyone want to come? Well, let’s try it.”

And try it, we did. In 2016, the first year of WDW, we had an average of 15 cars per game. “Not too shabby!”, we thought. So, in our planning season, we decided to do a little more promo and apparently word spread, because at the first WDW of 2017, we looked at the line of cars streaming in and did a little happy dance that our

casual, polo party had captured the hearts of the community. Over 50 cars showed up that day! Our average climbed throughout the season. So much so, that we decided to open the other side of the field this year, to be sure everyone gets a front-row, fieldside spot. In addition, we’ve had a blast with our live-stream, tailgate contests. Our Executive Team swipes the golf cart to visit each vehicle and determine who brought the most festive, delicious, creative tailgate. Winners receive bragging rights and CabCab tickets. We also found it was a great way to keep the intimate feeling of a family party by inviting your family to become a part of our own. We also love having the chance to show the other side of polo. It’s still a fast-paced, fun sport to witness, but our Wednesdays give people the chance to witness the more casual side of the game. The side where we call the players “cowboys” and we get to watch as players hone their craft and green horses are developed into world-class competitors. Some Wednesday are, in fact, tournament matches and it always feels like a sneakpeek into the heart and soul of the art of Polo. So, don’t feel like you have to get all dressed up on Wednesdays. But do dress up your tailgate, bring your tribe and your BYOP (Bring your own Party, food, beverages) and we will see you fieldside.

WHAT’S A CABCAB? THE LITTLE CONCERT THAT COULD...AND STILL DOES

The first Cabernet Cabaret was a small affair. However, looking back, it already exemplified the qualities that grew into the current “CabCab” phenomenon, the “party of the summer.” At Arranmore, we hold community as our highest ideal. If we can encourage community between artist, audiences, friends, family, neighbors, nature…it’s been a great day. Every sweet summer night, as the sounds of music drift through the air, we watch grandparents dancing with kids, we laugh at the ever-evolving seating and transportation choices of our audience, who continue to step up their game and we look out on an audience that has quadrupled since that first night. As we delve into bigger concerts, National acts and grow into a world class polo venue; as we fill our calendar with weddings, parties and special events, like Yoga and art festivals, we constantly return to the foundation of the event that started it all. CabCab is our gift to the community. We hand select the stars of the Chicagoland entertainment scene. Audiences who at first ask with trepidation, “Well, who is the band?” walk away stunned to realize they just saw entertainers they recognize from TV shows, Broadway productions, with credits including Grammy nods and feature films.

There is something ambiguous about what a CabCab is and who the performers are. We like it that way. This is our surprise party for our most loyal fans. This is an annual reunion of the best performers in the region. No matter how big we get, we will always treasure our CabCab concerts as the cornerstone of who we are. So, for real though…. What IS it?? We thought it would be fun to ask the artists themselves to describe the experience in their own words. “What is a CabCab? A night to enjoy the outdoors on a beautiful (or stormy) summer night, eat a picnic, drink wine and listen to amazing singers rock out to an awesome live band and dance your ass off! As an artist my favorite part of CabCab is that I love to sing songs in a style that I don’t usually get to do with my super talented friends and colleagues. And the band is always so impressive!” “The best part of CabCab is how everyone just decides they’re gonna be the biggest, loudest, craziest version of themselves. Onstage and off.” “CabCab is a moment in time when friends and family gather together in a beautiful setting of nature, experiencing music as a community of music-lovers and nature-lovers of all ages. The band is a powerhouse of musicians and the singers who collaborate together to make music as one collective artist. As a veteran CabCab performer, my favorite part each year is experiencing the collective joy from the audience whether they are dancing, singing along, or sitting and enjoying the music while they picnic under the sun and stars.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Can’t wait to share the love with you!

ARTIST SHOUT OUTS Every year, we look back at the accomplishments of our family of artists and feel incredibly humbled that they carve time out of their incredibly busy and successful lives, to come out and play with us. This past year was no exception. Check out a sampling of some of the coolest accomplishments, from some of our coolest friends. Sophie Grimm is not only an incredible artist, but also has one of the most generous hearts we’ve ever known. It just makes sense that her biggest accomplishment last year was her featured role in the award-winning, world premiere of TREVOR, the musical based off the OSCAR-winning short film of the same name, inspiring the non-profit suicide-prevention organization The Trevor Project, and changing the lives of youth and the LGBTQ community across the world. Word on the street is TREVOR is back in workshop development and headed for Broadway. Dave Budrys, who has played nearly EVERY CabCab show, actually had to miss one last summer. We decided to give him a pass since we decided he had a pretty legit reason. Turns out he was playing a show at Lollapalooza with Lucky Diaz and The Family Jam Band. Bethany Thomas has long been a CabCab crowd favorite and man are we lucky we got her for a show this season! Her band Four Lost Souls has been mega-busy this past year, including playing South by Southwest in Austin, a UK tour in April and...wait for it...they are opening for Robert Plant at Millennium Park on June 17th!!

Brianna Borger’s performance of Lucille in PARADE at Writer’s Theatre earned her a spot in the highly coveted, Chicago Tribune, Top Ten Performances of the year (2017). From the same show, our buddy Jonathan Butler-Duplessis won a Jeff Award (Chicago’s version of the Tony Awards) for best supporting actor in a musical. 49

Fun fact: As a friend of the Artistic Team of Arranmore, we’ve been trying to get John Michael Finley scheduled on a CabCab for the past several years. Recently, he moved to New York and then was cast as the star of the hit film, I Can Only Imagine, a huge, surprise blockbuster hit of 2018. He and our Artistic Director, Lara Filip, performed together in James Joyce’s THE DEAD at Court Theatre a few years back. We are so excited for the opportunities that have come his way!

Long-time CabCab band members Liam Davis and Gerald Dowd were nominated for yet ANOTHER Grammy award for their work with Justin Roberts, the acclaimed kids rock artist! They were edged out by Lisa Loeb. We’d be so mad at her, but she is another one of our favorite artists...and her glasses are still SO cute! Darn you, Lisa Loeb!! We’re still very proud of our boys on their third Grammy Nod. These guys are lauded as some of the hardest working musicians in Chicago and we feel so privileged to spend a little time with them each summer.

For anyone who doesn’t immediately recognize the name, they are a cover band founded by Gary Sinise and Kimo Williams that performs at USO shows, entertains troops, and raises money for disabled veterans. Molly has been traveling the globe with them, aweing audiences with her special brand of rock magic. She is also the front woman of the super-popular, summer festival, all-girl band Catfight. Choosing the perfect event tent

At Arranmore, we view everything as an art form. Whether you’re a scientist, doctor, farmer, retail employee, laborer, barista…there is an art to what is given to the world. As part of our “behind the curtain” theme for our 2018 magazine, we decided to take a closer look at the art form of event tenting. Different types of tents are used for different circumstances. Choices are made because of terrain, such as a frame tent to be weighted on a concrete surface. Other times, different styles are used to create a specific experience for the guests. Taking it a step further, you can transform a tent even more with different lighting techniques, fabric, or other décor elements. Ultimately, the art and science of tent selection serves as the foundation of every great event. Century Pole Tent: This is the traditional, white, high-peak pole tent that many brides choose for their wedding. This style tent is a very cost-effective option for a bride looking to have a tent wedding, but also trying to stay on a stricter budget. However, you can always take this tent and add items such as a full interior fabric liner, which does add cost but also adds a whole other layer of sophistication to the event. Sailcloth Tent: This tent is a variation of a pole tent, but with an artistic approach. The tent has stained wood side poles, and stained wood center poles, as opposed to aluminum poles on the Century Pole Tent. This tent also has a thin translucent tent top which allow light to filter through the tent top at night creating a “glow” over the entire top of the

tent. The tent top vinyl is made to emulate sailboat sails from Cape Cod and the Eastern seaboard, and really create a unique experience for brides looking for a “rustic elegance” for their wedding. Frame Tents: These are tents 20’, 30’, and 40’ wide tents without center poles which leaves you with a completely unobstructed interior space. Because the eye is drawn to notice the interior metal framework of the tent, most brides who choose this tent style tend to add fabric to cover up the metal framing. This tent is also used more often when the tent cannot be staked down. So in a space such as Arranmore Farms, this style tent may not be what most brides tend to choose. Clear-Top Tents: Clear-top tents are exactly that, tents with clear vinyl tops! This style tent is on the higher end of tenting for a wedding event, however, the look and feel of a clear-top tent is unmatched – especially in such a beautiful setting such as Arranmore Farms. WHO KNEW THERE WERE SO MANY STYLES AVAILABLE? We’ll tell you who. Dave, the owner of our preferred tent vendor, Blue Peak Tents. We sat down to ask him a few questions on his strategy to create the perfect tenting for each event. ARRANMORE What are the top 3 things you suggest to clients, building their dream wedding? DAVE 1. Make sure you have enough room under the tent structure to accommodate everything in the wedding, including bars, buffets, dance floors, and other items besides seating. Too many times I hear from brides, “we are going to have our dance floor outside the tent”, or “our two bars will be outside the tent”. This is totally fine, but Chicagoland weather can change very quickly, and you should always have space in the tent for everything…just in case. 2. Try to keep your guests comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, everyone loves the look of a clear-top tent, but this type of tent is not the best choice for a July wedding that starts at 3pm. Always consider the time of year you’re hosting the event, and also the time of day. Cleartop tents don’t always work in the dead of summer, and most late September & October weddings will most likely need walls and heat. Don’t let look of the tent overshadow what the tent is really meant to do, which is protect your guests from the elements and keep them comfortable. 3. Have someone from the rental company on-site during your event. This person knows the rental products and can address any issues that may arise during the event. The last thing a bride, MOB, or FOB wants to do on the big day is worry about anything that could potentially go astray.

ARRANMORE Any important facts about tents that would be good for future clients to know? DAVE All of our tents are made to withstand heavy wind loads and inclement weather. We take safety very seriously and do not cut corners on the correct installation techniques for each tent structure. ARRANMORE What style of tent does Blue Peak Tents do the most of? What is your favorite and why? DAVE We do a ton of rentals in each style tent. For the bride looking for a more “unique” tent experience we tend to rent more sailcloth tents in the summer months and more clear-top tents in the autumn months. If I had to choose a tent for my own wedding though I would choose a sailcloth tent. They are stunning! ARRANMORE What are some of your favorite ideas or things you have seen clients do that make your tents different or unique? i.e. Decor, outside dance floors, shape of the tent, etc. DAVE We honestly have seen anything and everything. Event planners often get pretty creative with client visions, so I would always recommend talking with an event planner early in the process. Each client has different ideas, and a tented event is a great blank canvas to get creative on! ARRANMORE What would you say differs a tented wedding from all other styles of weddings? DAVE You create your own space to fit your wedding vision, you don’t have to take someone else’s space and try to “work with it”. Our clients also love to flow in and out of the tent, where they don’t feel constrained to a room. Having your event outdoors just adds another element to the event. There’s nothing quite like having your wedding under the stars.
