CAUSES OF RUST we like to compare rust to an iceberg. it’s not what you can see above the surface of the water that is most destructive, it’s what you can’t see that you need to worry about. the same is true of rust and corrosion, the things that aren’t visible or less obvious are what cause the greatest damage.
TYPES OF RUST
They are different in how they look and different in the circumstances that led to their formation. At Armor Protective Packaging, we recognize that identifying the type of rust is the first step in identifying a solution to prevent it.
red rust Hydrated Iron Oxide forms due to high oxygen and water exposure resulting in red rust. • Red rust is the result of heavy exposure to air and moisture, combined many times with a contaminate (salt). • This type of rust is most likely atmospheric because typically there are no signs of rust runs or streaks on the metal parts/equip ment where the rust has formed.

• With red rust, there is uniform corrosion, most often from a very corrosive environment.

Iron Oxide-Hydroxide is a very soluble oxide resulting in yellow rust.
Iron Oxide formed under high oxygen and low moisture conditions results in brown rust.
• Yellow rust is distinguishable in recessed areas of the metal parts/equipment where the rust “runs and drips” (solvated rust).
• Brown rust is a drier rust than those mentioned previously.
• Yellow rust forms as a result of very high moisture content. It is frequently found in settings where puddled/standing water has most likely been present.
• It is most likely atmospheric – having formed as a result of water and oxygen in the atmosphere and presenting as a reddish-brown crust on the metal’s surface. • Brown rust is sometimes localized rust and appears as non-uniform spots. It can be the result of a contaminate on the metal’s surface often originating from the manufacturing process.

Iron (II) Oxide forms with limited oxygen resulting in black rust.
• Brown rust has a lower moisture content and is most likely the result of atmospheric conditions.
• Black rust can be visually identified as a thin, black film which is the result of oxidation in a low oxygen environment. • Black rust has an appearance of almost a black stain. Most likely the areas exhibiting the black rust had something covering them, which prevented oxygen from reaching the surface. • This type of rust is a more stable rust layer that does not propagate as rapidly as other rust forms.
• Settings where black rust might form include wet paper resting tightly against a metal surface. • Yellow rust has a high moisture content and can frequently be attributed to an environment where water is most likely present.

Dear Professor: Why aren’t bio-based & compostable plastics the answer? Bio-based plastics are made in whole or partially from renewable biological resources. • Refers to a product's beginnings • Same polymer as oil-based plastic • Renewable material (corn, sugar cane) • Only 20% needed to be called bioplastic • However, same end of life concerns as oilbased films • Bio-based films are renewable, but: - Require land resources to produce - Require large amount of energy to produce - Are still too expensive - Are not biodegradable or compostable
Compostable plastics are mainly PLA (Polylactic Acid) based materials. These plastics require very special conditions to break down. • High temperatures • Proper combination of oxygen and moisture • Specific organisms • Difficult to compost PLA plastics correctly • It cannot be recycled by typical methods • There is currently a lack of infrastructure to accommodate compostable plastics • It will actually contaminate traditional recycle streams

To be clear, ARMOR is not claiming to have the “silver bullet” to save the environment, there is a long way to go for that, for all of us. What we are saying is that we want to be part of the solution. We’re working as hard at being an outstanding steward to our beautiful earth as anything else we do. However, there is so much talk on the environment these days, it can be confusing. We’d like to try and clear a few things up. So here it goes!

ARMOR PRODUCTS ARE RECYCLABLE
Recycling is one of the best ways to positively impact our environment and our human race. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste and reduces the need for raw materials to be used. Huge amounts of energy are needed when making products from raw materials, while recycling requires much less energy and therefore preserves our natural resources. When finished using an ARMOR film or paper, recycle it!
RECYCLED CONTENT IS MONEY WELL SPENT
ARMOR utilizes recycled content in our products whenever possible, and we do it without sacrificing their integrity or performance. As recycled resins continue to improve in cleanliness and recycling continues to gain more ground each year, utilizing recycled resin content makes enormous sense. • By 2020, we expect to have a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled content in all ARMOR POLY® VCI films • ARMOR already uses post-industrial recycled content in our films (check out our innovative FOUNDRY Film™ as an example)
SOURCE REDUCTION SAVES OIL PRODUCTION
Source Reduction (or waste prevention) is the number one recommendation of the United States EPA in their Hierarchy of Integrated Waste Management In 2005, ARMOR was the first VCI manufacturer to use innovative engineering to bring multi-layer (co-extruded) films to the market. ARMOR debuted the DEFENDER™, a three-layer film that strategically places VCI on the inside, closest to the metal part, and added unique barriers, allowing the film to be down-gauged by 25-30%. Source reduction at its finest! We like to use the incandescent vs. LED bulb analogy to help explain the concept of source reduction when it comes to mono film vs. DEFENDER™.

The Biodegradable Plastics Blacklist: (Or The Knock Against Biodegradable Plastics Today) • Biodegradable polymer-based films require high temperature and sunlight to biodegrade but these conditions are unrealistic given the current waste and composting systems. • Its name encourages people to think they actually degrade and promotes ‘single use’ mentality. • Most are still made from petrochem icals, but other chemicals are added to cause the plastic to break down to smaller pieces - if exposed to the right conditions - making them difficult to recycle.
