HAIR & MAKE-UP
HAIR & MAKE-UP
A bride’s wedding hair will generally have to last for about 10 hours, so it’s important to chose a hairstyle that works for your hair. Make sure you test your hair design beforehand, so you know it will last. Wedding make–up should be chosen around what suits your face — everybody has a different face shape, skin tone, lip shapes and eye colour. The make–up style you choose should come down to personal preference and what you think is best for you. TOP HAIRDO TIPS ■ Make sure your hair is shampooed the day before, so your hair is easier to work with.
TOP MAKE–UP TIPS ■ Airbrush make–up and fake eyelashes help to emphasise your face and eyebrows, but a natural, no make–up look is a great way to show ‘you’. ■ Make sure your skin is clean and exfoliated and use a light foundation to hide any spots. ■ A matte–brown eye shadow and eyeliner can help emphasise your eyes while keeping with the natural look, as can a lightly coloured nude lipstick. ■ Before picking a lip colour, you should

While the bride’s ‘do’ will take preference and will undoubtedly require more time, effort, and money to bring together, don’t forget about the husband–to–be. If your betrothed is a ‘metro man’, who keeps his hair and nails in immaculate order, you will probably not need to get too involved in this area of wedding preparation. However, most men will not have a particular hair style and will not necessarily remember to trim and clean their nails before the ceremony. A good idea is to book a group session at a good local barber and get the groom and his entourage down there for a haircut and, if they’re willing, a bit of styling. Some barbers even offer an old–school close razor shave — complete with the brush and foam — making it a fun experience too.

WEDDING PARTY
Picking a posse The wedding party, both bridesmaids and groomsmen, is your number–one support network in the lead–up to the wedding. Think about the responsibilities of those you’ll choose to form this posse. The maid of honour and best man are usually the bride and groom’s right hands throughout the entire wedding process. It comes as no surprise that siblings and best friends often get chosen for this position of honour at the bride’s and groom’s sides. These people can generally be trusted to support the bride and groom, as well as to make the process a lot of fun. What about your family? Sometimes parents or in–laws could have certain expectations about who should be included in the wedding party. Although it could be a good idea to consider their requests, you should not be pressured into selecting someone you don’t feel should be included. Don t worry about gender — it does not
Page 10
determine good friendships and the tradition of choosing same–sex wedding parties has died a slow and well deserved death. Women can stand with men and men can stand with women. You can even mix up their titles for fun — the man of honour and the best woman, for example. Chances are your best mates or siblings will do a fantastic job, but make sure they know what will be expected of them in the time leading up to your big day. It might be impossible for your bestie, who might live on the other side of the country, to do wedding–related errands for you. Consider the lives and budgets of your wedding party as well; it’s hardly fair to expect your best friend to be your maid of honour at a spur of the moment destination wedding if you know she doesn’t have that kind of cash–flow. And — this is important — don’t be offended if you’ve asked someone to stand up there with you and that person says no.
PHOTOGRAPHER
Picture perfect Your photographs should be a stunning and unique reflection of your wedding day. To ensure you look your best in these photographs, it is essential to feel comfortable with the person behind the lens and to listen to them. Do a bit of research and find a photographer you feel relaxed with, who understands the look and feel you are hoping to capture in your photographs. You will want to check details such as price, coverage, reputation and style. Ask the photographer if you can view a display album of the photographer’s best
images using professional models, or check out their website for a showcase of their work. Make sure you ask what other costs you might incur outside of your desired package (for example, the cost of travel, or reprints and enlargements of photos).

RECEPTION
RECEPTION
It’s time to celebrate A well–organised reception will allow you to relax and have fun Just as the ceremony is a reflection of you both as a couple and of your commitment, the reception should also continue that theme. It is truly a chance for you to dance the night away with your nearest and dearest, enjoy a delicious dinner, and catch up with relatives you might not have seen in a while. Booking the venue for the wedding ceremony and reception should be one of the first arrangements you make, as they are often booked months (sometimes years) in advance. This will also give you the chance to decide whether you would like to be married on the grounds of the venue of your choice and simply stroll to your reception.
YOUR WEDDING VENUE CHECKLIST ■ Can I have my ceremony and reception in the one location, if necessary? ■ What is the capacity and cost per person? ■ Is parking available (and, if so, is it free)? ■ What wet weather alternatives are available to me at this venue? ■ Which decorations are provided (if any)? ■ How many weddings/receptions are going to be held on that day? ■ When can we hold rehearsals? ■ What time can the florist set up? ■ Can the guests throw confetti (if not, what other options do we have)?
■ How long can we have the venue for? ■ Are there noise restrictions? It is often important to choose a venue with neutral colours, because this ensures a decorator can use any colour scheme. You also want to carefully select a venue with all the necessary facilities; for example, projector screens, air–conditioning, wi–fi and
laptop connectivity, staging for entertainment, adjustable lighting and sound, dance floor, podium and microphones. If you are getting photographs taken as a couple and wedding party following the ceremony, it is a nice touch to have an area where guests can relax, enjoy a drink and possibly some canapés while they wait. When organising a reception, though, one of the biggest things to consider is the menu. Chicken is always a safe option and be wary of ordering a buffet (plated options tend to be more popular with guests). Industry experts often recommend a sit down, two–course main/dessert option. It is always important to speak with the venue co–ordinator to confirm the budget and their clear schedule.

BACHELORETTES
Have the best ‘last night’ The hen’s night is one tradition that will never die, purely based on the amount of fun a group of you and your best girlfriends can have together. It is typically the duty of the maid of honour to organise and plan the hen’s night, and it is important to consider the bride when planning. If the bride prefers quieter events, that should be the main consideration, rather than arranging a loud, clubbing venue. Remember, you may have to tone things down depending on who is attending (as younger or older guests may be present). Whether it’s a wild night out, or a girls’ night in, make sure it’s primarily about spending
quality time with the bride before she walks down the aisle. Listen to the wishes of the bride and, if she is against doing anything too wild or risky, respect her decision — don’t take her to a raunchy club or sky diving if she won’t like it. A smart approach is to have the matron of honour or head bridesmaid talk to the bride-to-be a while before the hen’s about the activities she deems acceptable, before picking two or three that most will enjoy.

GUEST LISTS
Who’s invited? Deciding on a guest list for a wedding can be a daunting experience. Do you invite that second cousin you last saw when you were 10 years old? What about your best friend’s sister’s boyfriend? Whether you are inviting 30 people to your big day or 300, deciding on who to invite can be hard. Before you begin sending out invitations, sit down with your partner and discuss some basic rules about the guest list. Certain rules could include people you have not seen or had constant contact with in more than three years or no family friends you have not seen or spoken to in more than five years. Here are some tips to help you come up with your guest list: SET A ROUGH LIMIT Would you like to have a small, intimate wedding, with about 20 of your nearest and dearest friends and family, or a much larger event with 200 guests? Starting with a rough number (which can change), is a good place to start for budgeting purposes. MAKE A LIST Short–list the people you absolutely must have at your wedding. From your closest friends to your most
loving aunts — if you can’t imagine your big day without them at your side, put their names on the list. MAKE SOME CUTS Inevitably, your list will be too long. This is where things get tough, as you decide who to cut and who to keep. PLUS ONES Decide whether your guests can bring a plus one and whether children will be allowed at the wedding. It might seem mean, but feeding and seating the children and plus ones of your guests will cost you extra — can you accommodate them in your budget?

INVITATIONS
You are invited A wedding invitation is the first formal notice people will receive about your wedding, so it is worth taking the time to get it right. Wedding invitations are usually sent out at least six to eight weeks beforehand. It is always a good idea to keep a list of your guests; this way you can tick off your RSVPs when they arrive. If you are planning to get married in an area unfamiliar to your guests, it is a good idea to include directions and a map. You may also want to include contact details for local accommodation in the vicinity of the reception venue. Another important thing to add on your
invitation is what type of dress you would like your guests to wear — black tie, formal, semi–formal or smart casual.

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE
Mum’s the word The dress of the mothers of the bride and groom is almost as important as the bridal party
Your mother has probably been waiting for this day since you were a little girl, so it’s only natural for her to be almost as excited as you. A close second to the bridesmaid’s dresses, the clothing of the mothers of the bride and groom is paramount to a wedding. Traditionally, the bride’s mother picks her outfit first, and then lets the groom’s mother know what she’s picked so they don’t clash in formality, style or colour. Both outfits should complement the overall colour palette of the wedding, but often the groom’s mother will coordinate with her son’s tie while the bride’s mother will wear a shade lighter or darker than the bridesmaids.

Know Anyone Getting Married in 2019/2020?
BRIDESMAIDS
Let them say ‘yes’ to their dresses too Choosing your bridesmaids’ dresses is no walk in the park. When considering the fact that some of them may be different sizes, heights and skin tones, finding a dress that complements everyone can be extremely difficult. Given this challenging predicament, a lot of brides are opting for mismatching dresses to ensure everyone feels comfortable and looks their best. This is a fantastic option, as having confident bridesmaids will only help to
enhance your photographs. If you are worried about the cohesion of your photos, opt for one element to be the same in all dresses. Whether that be the colour, the length of the dresses or the cut — it will surprise you how well everything ties together. Also, remember to consider how the bridesmaids’ dresses will look alongside the groomsmen's suits. This ensures a well–balanced bridal party and fantastic images.

FIRST DANCE
Dancing the night away The bride and groom’s first dance as husband and wife is arguably the most beautiful part of any reception. The newlyweds may perform any number of dances to express their feelings for one another — from a traditional waltz or tango to a contemporary dance created by the couple themselves. Generally, the bride and groom will dance first, followed by the bride and her father and the groom and his mother. The parents then dance with each other, while the best man dances with the bride and the groom dances with the maid of honour. After this, the other guests join them. If the traditional way isn’t your style, you could opt for a more personalised one where you and your partner decide what order you’ll be dancing in. Select a song that is special or meaningful
Page 20
to you both and ensure that you and your partner practice the dance until you are comfortable to perform it for your guests. You may want to undertake classes or some private tutoring for a traditional dance, or simply teach yourselves using videos and how-tos on the internet. If you’re lucky, one of your friends may remember the steps from their wedding and be able to pass that knowledge along.

TEAM WORK
Do your planning together Few things can be more stressful than watching wedding preparation tasks pile up. Getting your soon–to–be hubby involved in the big day will not only ease some of the angst, but will also provide an opportunity to work as a team and grow as a couple. Divvy up the tasks early on, keeping each person’s skills and personality in mind, but try to do most things together (like choosing the venue and caterers). Remember, this is his special day too, so your partner’s input should also be valued. Although he might not have an opinion on things like decor, your soon–to–be spouse will have great ideas in other areas. To start with, you’ll want to consider the three Ws — when, where and who. First, set the all-important when: the date of your wedding. This will determine how long you have to plan and save for the wedding, as well as
Page 22
taking season and time of day into consideration in all the rest of your planning. Sorting out where you both want to get married is next on the list; make sure you book it early to avoid missing out. Next, you’ll need to figure out who will be at your wedding, from the bridal party to the guests, which will assist in knowing the size of your ceremony and reception, and how much food and drink you need to cater for. Your soon-to-be husband will have a list of friends and family that he wants to invite too. Most importantly, make sure you are on the same page when it comes to the budget. Weddings can be incredibly costly, with this sometimes leading to friction if you don’t agree on essentials and optional extras. At the end of the day, planning something together that you’re both excited for, will be great fun and the extra pair of hands will come in handy.
DRESS AND VEIL
The perfect fit When the time comes to choose your wedding dress and veil, you will be overwhelmed with options. Different styles, fabrics, brands, stores, colours, prices; the list goes on. You can have a custom dress designed and specially made for you by a highly sought–after wedding couturier, or you can order a dress online from a myriad of e–stores and hope it fits well. Likely, you will find yourself in a wedding boutique at one point or another, trying on different dresses with your bridesmaids and trying to decide which you like best. Even in these stores alone, the options are staggering and you might find yourself being led by the opinions of friends and store assistants alike. While you may be overwhelmed with options, remember these tips when choosing the perfect dress for your special day: ■ Remember, you are the one who has to wear the dress and love it — looking at your wedding photos 15 years down the track should not make you cringe at the dress. ■ Even if there are other styles you like more, your dress style should complement your body, so don’t set your sights on a style without trying them all. ■ Classic looks are classic for a reason; they stand the test of time and always look great, even 20 years down the track. Page 24
When it comes to the veil, there are almost as many choices. Its traditional origins symbolised the bride’s virginity and modesty. For this reason, it was kept in place until the conclusion of the wedding ceremony when either the bride’s father or the groom would lift the veil, before the newlyweds would share their first kiss as husband and wife. The lifting of the veil would symbolise the bride’s father ‘giving away’ his daughter to her new husband. Things have changed a lot and this tradition no longer implies that a woman is the ‘property’ of the man. These days it is embraced more as a tradition that builds excitement and a sense of specialness, as the groom sees his new bride for the first time in her wedding dress. Some brides choose to wear no veil and this is a perfectly accepted modern choice. You can choose a full, cathedral–length veil or a shorter veil and wear it to the front or keep it attached at the back. However, if you are a no–veil kind of bride, you will not be losing out. With an ever–growing assortment of flowers, hair pieces and hats — like a pill–box style with birdcage netting attached to 1920s–inspired lace pieces — your head need not go unadorned on your wedding day. Veil or no veil, you’ll have plenty of options.
GROOM’S SUIT
Well–suited Don’t treat the groom’s outfit and accessories as an afterthought We all know the focus will be on the bride’s dress, but the groom’s outfit is just as important, so don’t treat it as an afterthought. Instead of looking at the groom as a separate entity, treat him and the bride as a pair, both complementing the other. While the groom’s wedding attire would traditionally include black ties and silk cravats, men seem to be stepping away from the traditional black tuxedo and into navy blues, greys, striped fabrics, brown shoes and better fitting ensembles. Mismatching colours of suit jackets and pants is popular among grooms, where some will choose a dark navy suit jacket to pair with light grey suit pants and tan leather shoes. Another popular look is a dark blue, navy blue or light grey suit with a matching waist coat paired with large watches and slim line leather shoes. But, if your wedding is screaming out for a more fun and laid–back feel, ditch the suit jacket and think light grey linen vests accompanied with crisp white shirts and a patterned bow tie. Naturally, the groom’s look is about so much more than just the suit. From shoes and socks, to wrist watches, ties, bow ties, belts and cuff links, the groom’s outfit needs almost as much thought as his bride’s. Decide whether you’re going for the classic look — black shoes, belt and necktie — or a vintage leather look, accented by soft blues, greys or lilacs. Another option, is to add small whacky elements to his wardrobe, like funky socks, a polka dot bow tie, or Superman cufflinks. Whatever option you choose will mostly be determined by the over–all feel of your wedding day celebrations — formal or care–free — and whether you want the groom and his retinue to match the bride’s camp. Page 25
SEATING
Your seating, sorted Once you’ve settled on a guest list and a venue, you can start the task of organising seating arrangements at both the ceremony and the reception. Will you have a ‘his’ and ‘her’ side at the reception, directing family members to sit on the side of either the groom or the bride? Or, will you let people grab a seat wherever they feel comfortable? Dividing your guests among tables can be a difficult task if people aren’t familiar with each other, or don’t like each other. If your guests aren’t enjoying the evening, this can negatively impact the vibe on your special day, so some thought should be put into which guests are compatible and who to keep at a safe distance. But, not too much thought — this day is about your happiness, not theirs.

BOUQUETS
Blooming beautiful Add a splash of colour to your big day, with a bouque Flowers are an integral part of weddings; not only adding to the romance and beauty of the occasion, but also imparting different meanings. The floral arrangements you choose for your wedding — including bouquets, centrepieces and the flowers that decorate your venue — account for a significant amount of the average wedding budget, so it’s important to think carefully before choosing.
CONSIDER THESE TIPS: White bouquets are a popular traditional choice but more vibrant bouquets add colour to the ensemble and photos. Muted and romantic combinations of white and pink, or white and cream, pair better with a classic wedding. If you like traditions, you may want to consider the meaning of flowers as you decide what to put in your bouquet. Page 28
The language of flowers is called ‘floriography’ and has been popular since Victorian times. For example, lily–of–the–valley means ‘trustworthy’, myrtle stands for ‘hope and love’, and hyacinth has a double meaning with ‘constancy of love’ and representing sport or play. The colours of roses — and some other flowers — also have significance, such as red meaning passion and courage, pale pink standing for grace and admiration, and yellow signifying joy and true friendship. Bouquets can be adorned or bound with ribbons, pearls, feathers or diamantes. Ensure the florist removes any pollen from your bouquet to prevent staining your dress.
THE CAKE
Choosing your cake So many cakes, so little time
PHOTOS: MAYDENNISON CAKES
You may be surprised how many variations of a signature cake flavours are available and your idea of a delicious chocolate mud cake may differ greatly from your baker’s. You’ll also want to keep dietary requirements in mind for your bridal party and your guests — there are many options available to cater for gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and more. Make sure the cakes are kept separate to avoid any nasty surprises for those with allergies to gluten and other foods.

From gilded geometric shapes drenched in colour to whimsical watercolours topped with wild flowers, a couture cake can certainly add wedding wow factor and make for some incredible photos. However, intricately designed cakes can come with a hefty price tag, so getting creative can help you save pennies. Taking dessert off the set menu and serving the cake to finish is always an option. Ordering a smaller cake for that special photo opportunity then adding it to a sweet-filled ‘dessert station’ will also ensure everyone gets a treat. GIFTS
Alter native gifts Traditionally, as a way to pass on their best wishes to the bride and groom, guests give a gift to the newly–wed couple at the reception. Letting guests chose a gift themselves adds a more intimate touch that many couples enjoy, but there is that risk of doubling up on items. A gift registry can alleviate this issue but, if you don’t want the hassle of transporting gifts, a wishing well is a great idea. Get creative in making the ‘well’ and request guests to place their wedding cards with cash inside it. There are many registry services available through department stores, services such as Amazon Wish List and more. No matter what you decide, just make sure it is clear on your invitation. Trending items in gift registries include:
■ Charitable donations — These days, many couples have already set up their home by the time they tie the knot. More and more couples are asking guests to donate to charity, rather than to buy gifts. ■ Experiences — Couples are placing more value on experiences than on products, so ask guests to buy a ‘memory’, like bungee jumping or cage diving. ■ Honeymoon funds — From Airbnb vouchers to money in the bank, you can ask guests to help you pay for the honeymoon instead of buying you a slow cooker.

VOWS
Personalise your promises
cue card on the day). Standing at the altar is an emotional experience and vows are easily forgotten under the stress. So, if you want to avoid fumbling for words with your soon–to–be spouse, both your families, friends, the celebrant and all the wedding doves looking on in painful suspense, practice your vows. Whether you write your own vows or not, though, just remember: it’s the meaning and the intention behind the words that count more than the words themselves.

A great way to add a personal touch to your ceremony is to customise your wedding vows. It may seem like it won’t require much work to simply add some special words to the traditional vows, or even to create your own vows from scratch, but it’s a lot harder than many couples think. If you decide writing your own vows is the path you want to take, you’ll first need to make sure your celebrant will allow personalised vows (as some religious denominations may require you to recite all or some of the traditional vows). If you opt for personalised vows, you can share the same words, or each write your own privately as a surprise to each other. Think about all of the times you have shared together, the memories you’ve made, and your hopes for the future. Think about what you want for your spouse and your marriage — happiness, health, etc. — and incorporate that into your promises. You may also want to include promises to any children you may share, or hope to share one day. Remember, when writing your own vows, to practice them (even if you’ll have a small
SPEECHES
A t o ast ! Make sure the speeches go down without a hitch
Choosing the right MC for your wedding can be a tough one. Do you pick the groom’s best mate out of loyalty, despite his habit of saying the wrong things at the wrong time? Or, do you choose your cousin, who’s stories are hilarious, but last way too long (and can be inappropriate sometimes)? Obviously, you’ll need to pick someone who knows both you and your spouse well enough to make the stories relatable, but he/she will also need to be entertaining, while getting to the point. Whether you’ll have an MC to guide the proceedings or not, you will need to make sure everyone who gets the tap on the
shoulder for a speech, knows to keep it short and sweet. Nothing is worse than falling asleep at a wedding or starving to death while the bride’s sister drones on and on. Make sure the best man and maid of honour know to stay sober enough to deliver their speeches — nobody wants to suffer through the embarrassment of a slurred speech. Traditionally, toasts will be drunk to the bride and groom, as well as to their parents, with close friends or family delivering the speeches. Both the bride and groom are also given the opportunity to thank their guests for coming, as well as making special mention of people who helped out with the preparation and execution of the wedding. Although the point of the speeches is to congratulate the bride and groom, wish them good luck, and to thank their parents and the guests, it is also meant to entertain the guests, so opt for quality over quantity. HONEYMOON
Of f you go! Your honeymoon is a magic time, so make sure you spend it exactly how you want to A honeymoon need not be the one you see in movies — tropical shirts, mojitos, luxury hotels and exotic destinations. Of course, it can be exactly that. Whether you and hubby would like to explore new worlds, splurge on ludicrous luxury, or simply take a month off work and drive around Australia, is completely up to you. Many couples start saving for their honeymoon as soon as they’re engaged, making sure they have enough cash in hand for activities and booking flights as soon as they settle on a wedding date. Other couples have short engagements and spur–of–the–moment weddings, leaving them little to no time to save up. There’s no rule that says you have to go on a honeymoon directly after getting married (or ever, for that matter), so some couples wait a couple months after the wedding before jetting off somewhere warm. Page 34
The point of the honeymoon is to spend a couple of days (or weeks) alone with your new husband/wife, savouring that happy glow that comes with joining your life to another. So, wherever you decide to go, just make sure it’s not somewhere you’ll bump into someone you know.

KIDS OF GUESTS
Engaging the little ones
Your wedding day is one of the most special and memorable days of your life, so this gives you the final ruling as to who attends the big day. As the presence of children can directly affect how the day pans out, you have the power to decide whether you want children there or not. Whatever your decision, it is important to say it upfront and make it clear that you are just having adults. Make your position known relatively early as well to allow parents enough time to make bookings and reservations for their children and arrangements for a child-minder.
If you do plan to have children at your wedding, it is essential you have something to keep them entertained. You could consider talking to a capable friend or family member — perhaps a teenager who needs some pocket money — to specifically look after the children and keep them entertained. It may be a good idea to look into getting a bed or cot for babies and toddlers to sleep in as the night progresses, particularly if the venue is being held on private property. Above all, remember the parents have the ultimate responsibility, so let them know your wishes early on to avoid any stress.

BUDGETING
Splitting the bill Work out your budget and financial responsibilities early on Working out the budget — and who will be paying for what — is an important discussion to have as soon as possible after saying ‘yes’. Traditionally, the bride’s father (her family) will pay for the wedding, but this is not always doable or fair. Some couples might wish to pay for their wedding themselves, while others will need some help from their families. Most parents, whether they’re on the groom’s or bride’s side, would gladly cough up some cash to see their kids hitched. Just make sure your expectations are set within your parents’ and soon–to–be in–laws’ means and don’t ask them to do more than they reasonably can. Splitting the bill on things like the photographer, the venue and the catering, will alleviate much of the apprehension you’ll feel while waiting for the final figure to be quoted. If you and your families have talked, divvied up the costs, and still fall short on your ‘dream wedding’ budget, it’s time to start cutting even more costs and to look at alternative options for getting what you want. Not everyone can afford (or necessarily want) a massive and expensive wedding. If you’d rather put some of your money to a different use, like going on an unforgettable honeymoon, or buying a home, there are ways you can cut costs and still have the wedding day you’ve dreamt of. GUESTS The most obvious way to cut costs, is to cut down on your guest list. With less people to seat and feed, you will be able to free up some much needed cash. Don’t let guilt guide you in this. Focus on the people closest to you and respectfully explain to the rest of the names
on your list that you cannot afford to entertain them for free. You may even offer them the alternative of covering their own portion of the costs; at the very least, they will pay their own way, or decide they don’t really need to be at your wedding after all. DECORATIONS Depending on how elaborate you would like your tables to be adorned, you can get away with many low-cost options, like doing the flower arrangements yourself. VENUE Ask around town and within your circle of friends and family for a venue alternative. Farmers might be willing to let you use their barn, or a beautiful open field. Or have your reception in a local park, like a picnic. CATERING With a smaller guest list, comes a smaller catering bill, but you can cut costs even more by having a barbecue and a finger–food spread, instead of a beautifully designed and laid out plate (which will leave most guests hungry anyway) at top dollar. Page 47
BRIDAL CARS
Roll up in style Wedding transportation is becoming something that is virtually only limited by couple’s imaginations. While any bride should realise that there needs to be some degree of comfort to your transportation, as you don’t want to arrive on your special day a frazzled mess, this sometimes goes out the window in the desire for the sensation factor. Whether arriving in a beautifully detailed limousine or something a little more retro, you definitely want it to be something that looks great in the photographs and makes your guests go wow. For space, elegance and service you can’t go past the traditional limousine.
The beauty of a limo is that you have plenty of space to lay out your dress with room for attendants if necessary, and you can feel like a queen. Generally speaking, cars will be required for the bride (who travels with her father), the bridesmaids, groom and his attendants, flower girls and pageboys and one for the mother of the bride. However, this is something that once again comes down to a couple’s individual taste and budget.

CATERING
Menu selection tips Making sure everyone has a bite to eat can be a tricky task There are a couple of things to think about when deciding on the food you’ll serve at the wedding. BUDGET The food will likely be one of the most expensive elements of your wedding, so you’ll need to do some careful budgeting — and stick to it. Be ruthless, or you’ll end up paying the price for your soft heart.
If people RSVP after the due date, you might want to think about cutting them from the guest list, or asking them to pay for their own food (seeing as you would already have budgeted and booked the caterer based on RSVP numbers). DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Make sure you’re aware of any special diets or allergies among your guests before booking the caterer. From coeliac disease to peanut allergies and veganism, your menu will ideally have to cater to it all.
Instead of guessing, ask your guests to disclose any special dietary requirements when RSVP–ing, so you can take them into account when booking the caterer. Granted, this will be the more expensive option should a handful of your guests need to diverge from the ‘regular’ menu, but you can hardly let them go hungry. Your caterer will have seen it all and will have workable options for you to consider. From gluten–free tomato and caprese skewers, to a vegan friendly coconut milk and mango panna cotta dessert and everything in between. Picky eaters are now the norm, meaning wedding caterers have updated their available menus, ready for you to take advantage of. MENU STYLE Depending on your budget, you will have to decide whether you’d like a buffet or a sit–down meal, with at least three courses. Page 49
ENTERTAINMENT
Play around Wedding games can be great fun Between the ceremony and the reception, the first course and the second course, after dessert — no matter what time of the wedding, you want to make sure guests are entertained. Here are some ideas: ■ Music — One of the best forms of entertainment, live bands, wedding singers, DJs, jukeboxes or play lists — all do wonders for the mood of your wedding. Music is generally used to create a mood. Songs such as Wagner’s Bridal Chorus and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March remain favourites, as does Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Couples generally pick a happy, upbeat song for the recessional, when they leave the ceremony venue. Then of course, you’ll want a meaningful song for the first dance as a married couple, and possibly some fun tunes for extra dancing with all the guests involved afterwards. ■ Table games — From games like Mad Libs (which allows guests to bond with each other), to ‘guess who of wedding guests’ and other games, there are many different
Page 50
activities guests can take part in at their table. One idea could be to have a booklet for the table to fill out together, answering questions like ‘what should we name our first child?’, and so on. Some couples utilise the place cards or guest favours as an activity/craft pack, self-plant tiny garden, playing cards or game that can be used during the reception. ■ Yard games — If you are having an outdoor ceremony or reception, outdoor games could be the way to go. You could play ring toss, Jenga, oversized board games and chess, or traditional childhood games like tag or hide and seek. ■ Group games — Games like charades, celebrity heads, and more could also be a good way for guests to interact and break the ice.
MEMENTOS
Unique memories Let guests leave their personal mark on your special day In the excitement and magic of a modern wedding, newlyweds can become so caught up in their special moment that it is easy to lose track of the people they’re sharing it with. So, let your guests leave a memento. It can be the candid memories of the guests’ antics that leave you with the biggest smiles after all is done and dusted. Here’s some great ideas to capture the love your guests have for you:
The idea is for your guests to try and snap a photo of each other as the night rolls on. This way, you’ll be guaranteed of some beautiful, funny and chaotic photos that the hired professional (probably) never would have captured. After all the excitement has died down, you can relive the magic of your special day from the perspective of your guests. PHOTO BOOTH As an alternative to the disposable cameras idea, you can hire a photo booth for the reception. Invite guests to snap as many different photos with as many people as possible. POLAROID TREE This can be a decorative false tree, brown string with pegs strung decoratively, or a piece of beautiful driftwood or dried tree branch. Place a Polaroid camera beside the tree so guests can take a ‘selfie’. Ensure there are pegs for guests to pin their photo to the tree and a jar of pens for people to write notes at the same time.
DISPOSABLE CAMERAS Place one disposable camera at each table and have your MC invite guests to use the roll of film you provided.
FINGERPRINT TREE Ask an artistic friend to draw a tree on a canvas, ensuring there are plenty of off–shooting branches. Place an ink pad beside the canvas so guests leave fingerprints as tree leaves. This can be framed and hung in your home. Page 51
TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS
TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS
Discover traditions to include in your wedding From charming to the downright strange, there are many No matter what culture or faith you observe, you will find some fascinating traditions to include in your big day. If you identify with a particular country or belief system, you might want to explore a few traditions to include in your ceremony or on the day. It will be meaningful to you and a source of interest for your guests. SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE, AND A SIXPENCE IN HER SHOE Possibly one of the most well-known traditions, this one has several meanings. The ‘something old’ symbolises the continuity between the family of the bride and the past. The ‘something new’ represents the bride’s new life, while ‘something borrowed’ stands for borrowed happiness from friends. ‘Something blue’ symbolises purity, love and modesty, which were traditional virtues of a bride. Finally, the sixpence is placed in the bride’s shoe for wealth and prosperity. THE BRIDE WORE WHITE This is a Western custom to symbolise purity, not virginity, in the Victorian era. However, a white dress and veil was not considered appropriate in the second or subsequent wedding. VEILING The veiling of the bride has its origins in the belief that a woman is vulnerable and must be hidden from evil spirits. Page 52
In arranged marriages, veiling was more used so the groom couldn’t back out when he saw the bride for the first time. To this day, however, in many religions the veil is a sign of humility and respect before God during a religious ceremony. CELTIC HANDFASTING Handfasting is a wedding ritual in which the bride’s and groom’s hands are tied together. It is said to be based on an ancient Celtic tradition and to have inspired the phrase “tying the knot”. BLENDING OF THE SANDS In this ceremony, the bride and groom each have a container of sand which they pour into one, which is then sealed. Some use plain white sand and others choose coloured sands.
groom as they departed the marriage ceremony. Nowadays, with wildlife and environmental concerns, rice is usually replaced with colourful confetti, flower petals or bubbles.
THE BRIDE’S BOUQUET There are many traditions around the bridal bouquet. In Ancient Rome, brides carried flowers as symbols of new beginnings, fidelity and hope for fertility. In medieval times, the bouquet was neccessary to hide the bad odours of most villages. In modern times, there is a belief that the bride should throw her bouquet to her bridesmaids and whoever catches it will be the next one to marry.
THE WEDDING CAKE In some parts of England, the wedding cake was made from community-stored dried fruit and shared with the entire village as a treat. Later when ‘stacked’ or tiered cakes became fashionable, couples traditionally saved the top tier of their wedding cake for the christening of their first child. Today, couples may not have babies within a year or choose not to christen them, and so save the top tier for their first wedding anniversary instead.

BRIDE TO THE LEFT This tradition harks back to a very different time, when the groom needed the space to
brandish a sword to protect his bride. While certainly not the case in present days, this tradition still stands in most ceremonies. THE UNITY CANDLE The lighting of the unity candle is a relatively recent tradition. The ceremony involves two tapered candles and a large pillar candle. Usually the mothers of the couple join to light the big candle with the tapered ones to represent the joining of two families. After the vows, the bride and groom may also choose to light the candle together. RECEIVING LINE The purpose of a receiving line is for the hosts of the wedding and the bridal party to welcome all guests. This is still common but, in addition, couples also circulate between courses at the reception. Page 53

LEGALITIES
Cross the T’s and dot the I’s Your wedding day isn’t all about having fun — there’s paperwork too
Getting married is the single greatest commitment you will make in your life; not just spiritually, but financially and legally too. Your wedding celebrant will discuss the seriousness of a marriage with you before the ceremony and will go through some of the documents you’ll soon come across. One of these, is the ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ application form, which you will have to file with your chosen celebrant at least one month before your wedding date. This form is used to ensure you are legally allowed to get married and asks you to declare things like your full names, date of birth, residency status and so on. After the ceremony, you will sign the documents necessary for the celebrant to register your marriage on your behalf. He/she will have 14 days after your wedding to file the registration papers and the process is generally finalised within about five business days thereafter. The wedding certificate you receive from Page 58
the celebrant on your wedding day is not an official document — you’ll have to apply for a marriage certificate if you want the official version for legal purposes, like making a last will and testament. Now you’re married, you should also update your will to include your new spouse, as this is a significant change in your life that you need to prepare for if the worst happens. You can choose to keep two separate wills, or have a joint will, dealing with all your assets and gifts in a single document. If you’re planning on taking your husband’s last name, be aware that this does not happen automatically. Also, it’s not necessary to formally apply for a change of name with the Department of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, but proof of identity (like your driver’s licence) can be issued under your married name. To do this, you will have to file a change of details form, supported by an official marriage certificate as proof of your name change.
