World Record Toowoomba holds the Guinness World Record for the Largest Lamington, which weighed in at 2,361 kg on June 11, 2011.

Fast Facts
Australia’s first appendectomy was performed in Toowoomba on March 11, 1893. The patient was Emma Webb and the procedure was performed on the kitchen table in her home.
Queensland Firsts Radio station 4GR (Gold Radio) opened on August 16, 1925 making it the first to have a commercial licence in Queensland. In 1967 Toowoomba’s Alderman Nellie Elizabeth Robinson was voted mayor making her the first Lady Mayor in Queensland.
Toowoomba has the funkiest sister cities Wanganui in New Zealand, Takatsuki in Japan and Paju in South Korea have unbreakable sisterhood bonds with the Garden City. Wanganui a city on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It is a place steeped in history, art and culture. Takatsuki is in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its natural parks and universities. Paju is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It is home to the Heyri Art Valley, which is the largest art village in South Korea.

Queensland’s Quirkiest The oldest known existing public urinal in Queensland is in Russell Street. The iconic men’s toilet was constructed in 1919. It survived the floods in 2011, was pulled down in 2013 due to roadworks, and rebuilt exactly, on the same spot, brick by brick.
250 is the number of parks and gardens throughout Toowoomba, which is why it is known as “The Garden City”.
First Brewery After testing water quality in Brisbane and Ipswich, the Perkins brothers located a reliable spring providing the quality they required, in West Swamp Toowoomba. In 1867, the brothers purchased land in Margaret Street (where Grand Central is today), constructing Queensland’s first brewery. In December 1869, they brewed their first commercial hogshead of light ale.

Finish your walk by perusing the collections at the local Art Gallery. 10AM - DISCOVER GLORIES PAST Head around to the Cobb+Co museum through the picturesque camphor laurel-lined streets adorned with glorious century-old homes. You’ll discover one of Australia’s best collections of original horsedrawn carriages — plus a whole lot more. 1PM - JUST A STROLL IN THE PARK After a truly satisfying lunch, walk off your indulgences through the vast expanse of Queens Park. There are 25 hectares of tree-lined avenues, playgrounds, grassy picnic areas, seasonal bloomings and the must-see Botanic Gardens. 3PM - DID SOMEONE SAY SHOPPING? The CBD is home to an amazing array of shopping delights, and Grand Central is the new centrepiece. Another refresher, anyone? NOON - ROSES BY ANY OTHER NAME Take a stroll through Newtown Park State Rose Garden, or a relaxing walk through Laurel Bank Park. History & Heritage Trail Spring Bluff Railway Station — McCormack Drive, Murphys Creek Spring Bluff Railway Station is a heritage listed site located on the main line between Ipswich and Toowoomba. St Patrick’s Cathedral, Toowoomba
S
t Patrick’s Cathedral is the Episcopal seat for the Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba, which stretches from Helidon in the east to the far west corner of Queensland and is over 450,000 square kilometers in size. The present blue-stone Cathedral is the third church under the name “St Patrick” to exist on the site. In 1882, Bishop Robert Dunne, Bishop of Brisbane, put into motion the plans for erecting what was to become the current Cathedral. The foundation stone was laid 13 May 1883, with construction lasting 6 years, the new church was opened on St Patrick’s Day 1889. The architect chosen was James Marks, whose work features throughout Toowoomba. In Victorian -Gothic style, the church was constructed in blue-

stone basalt from the Corporation quarry, with sandstone trims for the facings from the quarry at Murphy’s Creek. On 1 September 1929, Bishop James Byrne was consecrated as the first Bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Toowoomba. Plans commenced on transforming the beautiful stone church into a cathedral. The foundation for the extension was laid on 24 April 1932, culminating in the opening and blessing of St Patrick’s Cathedral 24 March 1935. In 1972 renovations and repairs were undertaken at the Cathedral. And now, nearly 50 years later, major renovations and repairs are in the planning stage to preserve this historical building not only as a place of worship, but also as a tribute to the skills and generosity of a bygone time.

Follow their progression from the discovery of flight through to the technologically advanced military aircraft of today. Our area for kids will spark their imagination and give them a hands on feel for what it might be like to be a Military Aviator. A trip to the Toowoomba Regional Council’s pools, equipped with lifeguards, kids wading pools and waterslides, fits the bill. Open all year round, the biggest issue will be trying to leave. Crows Nest National Park — Three Mile Rd, Crows Nest For a water activity that merges with nature, Crows Nest National Park provides a 2.7km walking track peppered with pit stops to three waterholes, Two shallow sandy pools followed by a large, deeper one for the more avid swimmer. Gorgeous Gardens Trail The Gumbi Gumbi Gardens — In the USQ grounds, West Street, Darling Heights The Gumbi Gumbi Gardens Cultural site feature extensive plantings of flora used by the local Aboriginal communities for food, medicinal and other purposes and is well worth an explore on your gardens tour. Cross the road to Urban Grounds Cafe and enjoy morning tea on the deck. QLD State Rose Garden, Newtown Park — 147 Taylor Street, Toowoomba Boasting over 2000 roses, including Heritage Roses in Australia, Frank Reithmuller and Alister Clark collections, also holds the World Federation of Rose Societies Award of Excellence 2018. Queens Park — 43-73 Lindsay Street, Toowoomba One of Toowoomba’s most recognised icons, Queens Park is made up of over 26-acres of lush green lawns, tree-lined pathways and botanic garden grandeur. Japanese Garden — 20 Regent Street, Toowoomba Also known as ‘Ju Raku En’, (Japanese for ‘enjoying peace and longevity in a public place’), Japanese Garden is the perfect spot to finish the day’s explorations. Hiking & Biking in Nature Trail Crows Nest Falls A creek-side walk to waterholes and to lookouts with spectacular views. Crows Nest National Park protects spectacular creek scenery, granite outcrops, a scenic waterfall and eucalypt forests. Tracks lead from the picnic area and follow the steep-sided gorge in the upper reaches of Crows Nest Creek to a lookout overlooking Crows Nest Falls. Continue to Koonin Lookout for an impressive view over a deeper gorge known locally as the Valley of Diamonds. Cooby Dam Loveday Cove A super recreational area offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy a host of land and *aquatic outdoor pursuits. Boaties, anglers, walkers and picnickers are all provided for at this picturesque location. If you’re keen to cast a line to catch a fish, or two, the dam offers its share of good fishing spots. Just be sure to get a permit first! For those who prefer land based activities, there are walking tracks to explore and picnic shelters and free gas barbecue facilities to help create a memorable day out. *Swimming at Cooby Dam Loveday Cove is expressly prohibited. Picnic Point Parklands Aside from the many small walks and trails that you can explore throughout Toowoomba’s beloved Picnic Point Parklands, there are many bushwalks that are well suited to the avid adventurer (with a good level of fitness of course!). Again, these trails offer a spectacular insight into the natural wonder that Toowoomba has to offer. From stunning displays of colourful flora through to captivating animals in their natural habitat and the views out towards the Lockyer Valley are absolutely breathtaking! Jubilee Park Located in Mounty Lofty, Jubilee is one of Toowoomba’s largest parks popular with bushwalkers, runners and mountain bikers. Playing host to 25km of some of the best trails in Queensland, Jubilee has become synonymous with mountain biking in the last few years. For the dedicated rider, the trails range from easy to hard. Popular trails include Easy Rider, Highlife, Rollercat, Hyperlink, Anonymous and Defibrillator among others. Downhill riders can also enjoy the Mackenzie Frenzy, the first legal downhill track in Queensland. Council Art Galleries Trail Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery Established in 1937, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery was the first public art gallery in regional Queensland. Metiisto Artisan Chocolate — 19 Croft Crescent, Harristown Metiisto Artisan Chocolate started life in 2012 in a little town called Falun in the heart of Sweden. Metiisto were Sweden’s only craft bean-to-bar chocolate maker and went on to win many international awards. In 2018 they moved to Toowoomba and reopened Metiisto as the regions only chocolate factory. Metiisto take pride in using ethically sourced cocoa from the Solomon islands and the highest quality local ingredients. Emeraude — 8616 New England Highway, Hampton A Micro Region Eatery located in the beautiful High Country area of Hampton, a half hour north of Toowoomba, Emeraude is set right on the New England Highway. Emeraude works directly with local farmers, so their menu is ever changing with the seasons. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Emeraude is a must stop to truly experience the flavours the region has on offer. Rosalie House — 135 Lavenders Road, Lilyvale Rosalie House, an original Queenslander homestead and the Rosalie House Vineyard are 510 metres above sea level on the eastern edge of the Darling Downs. The cellar door and café, perfectly pairing local produce and their own wine, is a beautifully restored railway cottage that offers magnificent views across the Lilyvale Valley. German Bake and Wurst House — 108 Postmans Ridge Road, Helidon Spa Andrea Wissig and her mum Sonja Axthelm operate German Bake and Wurst House, having moved from Germany in 1999. Top Secret WWII Tour Step inside the world of the ‘Top Secret Precinct – Charleville’ and discover what 1942 marked the arrival of...
The USAAF arrived in Charleville during WWII. They set up camp here for four years and would spend around $1.4m (1940s currency) constructing 101 buildings on the site. It was a Top Secret base throughout WWII and even if the enemy knew they were here, they couldn’t get to Charleville and return to their base as Charleville was too far inland. This USAAF base would cover an area of approximately 25 square kilometres south of Charleville and station up to 3500 (Charleville’s population today) personnel on site.
