Over 36 million American adults have some degree of hearing loss.

The statistics are shocking. Hearing loss is an increasing health concern in this nation that is often preventable. Make an appointment with Audiology Experts this October during National Audiology Awareness and Protect Your Hearing Month.

On average, most Americans don’t know how to recognize the first signs of hearing loss or which health professional is qualified to diagnose and treat the condition. If you think you may have a hearing loss, you need to see an audiologist.

An audiologist is a licensed and clinically experienced health-care professional who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating people with hearing loss and balance disorders. The first step in treatment of a hearing problem is to get your hearing evaluated by an audiologist. A hearing evaluation will determine the degree of hearing loss you have and what can be done.

about the seasons changing that helps me see God everywhere: in His world, in His people, and especially in His word. The Bible encourages us to dig deep into God’s word. When we do, we’re seldom disappointed. Our time on this earth is so brief. (James 4:14 says our life is but a vapor or a mist.) And we have been called to be the light of the world.

Sure, we all go through dry seasons. But then there are times, like I’m experiencing right now, when we are hungry for the things of God. The psalmist put it so beautifully in Psalm 42:1 when he wrote, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so my soul pants for you, O God.” What a lovely thought. I’m being blessed with a season where I feel God’s presence so close and I see Him at work in so many ways that I want to encourage others to take the time to find Him. Deuteronomy 4:29 promises we will find Him, when we seek Him with our whole heart.

Take some time today to slow down, be still, and know that He is God and He longs to know you, as much as you want to know Him.

Mayors from our Letters

MAYOR DAVID COOK MANSFIELD

There are a lot of great things about fall, the least of which is the changing colors and the cooler temperatures. But there’s something about this season that connects with the sense of community we all feel about our hometowns.

Maybe it’s all the festivals held this time of year, the kind of events that connect neighbors and bring out the child in all of us.

Whether it’s National Night Out or Fire Safety Palooza, school carnivals or trick-or-treating at Rose Park in the dark, Mansfield residents see fall as a time for celebrating our great community. It’s a wonderful feeling to see the happy faces and hear the laughter at these community events; you get a true sense of the excellent quality of life we are blessed to have in Mansfield.

The city website calendar is full of activities and events this fall hosted by many city departments. Our goal is not just to keep our residents educated and informed, but engaged with their city and with each other.

Visit www.manfieldtexas.gov and look for the calendar on the homepage. I’m sure you’ll find something you and your family will enjoy.

MAYOR RON JENSEN GRAND PRAIRIE

Grand Prairie was recently ranked the 2nd Happiest City in Texas and 10th Happiest City in the U.S. by WalletHub.com. Their analysis was based on 28 indicators, ranging from emotional and physical well-being; income and employment; to community and environment. Our Parks Department recently won its second Gold Medal, anointing it best in nation by the National Recreation and Parks Association. WalletHub.com also ranked Grand Prairie

• A top 50 in nation Best Place to Raise a Family and Best Place to Retire

• A top 5 city in Texas for first-time home buyers

Self-Made.io ranks Grand Prairie #1 Best Place to Retire in U.S. D Magazine lists Grand Prairie’s historic downtown as one of eight in DFW poised for greatness.

And, we can’t forgot, MoveHub.com ranks Grand Prairie as the Least Hipster City in the U.S., but we will take Happiest over Hipster any day!

I’m so glad others recognize our funderful philosophy and proud of our City Council, city employees, residents and businesses who work together to make this possible.

MAYOR JEFF WILLIAMS ARLINGTON

The philanthropic spirit is alive and well in The American Dream City. That was clear last month during North Texas Giving Day, when the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation awarded $50,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations and hosted a free community concert featuring blues rock guitarist and singer Jimmie Vaughan. During the annual 18-hour online giving event, Arlington residents gave generously to the nonprofit of their choice with all funds matched by the Communities Foundation. It was touching to see so many give so unselfishly.

Then, the American Dream City got a little dreamier, with the groundbreaking of the AISD’s new Fine Arts Center and Athletics Complex. The Fine Arts Center will serve the entire district, prekindergarten through 12th grade, will include a 1,250-seat concert hall, 450-seat theater, art and dance studios, classroom space, instrument repair center, and gallery space. The Athletics Complex will include a natatorium and competition venues for basketball, volleyball and wrestling. We think it’ll be a big boon to our area.

And I was happy to see many of you at the inaugural Downtown Arlington Brewing Arts Festival. Featuring original artwork by local and not-so-local artists, live music, and interactive art activities for kids and adults, the event left us expecting big things from this fest in the future. Now that the weather is growing milder, I hope to see you at River Legacy Living Science Center, for a family nature walk. Educational guided walks begin at 2:00 p.m., the second Saturdays of every month.

Mansfield Family Dentistry

COSMETIC, RESTORATIVE, AND IMPLANT DENTISTRY FROM THE BAUER FAMILY TO YOURS.

Mansfield Family Dentistry is all about family; the Bauer family of dental professionals bringing state-of-the-art dentistry with a small-town vibe to you and your family. It’s a passion they’ve pursued, for more than 30 years. Now, as the fourth generation of Mansfield residents call Mansfield Family Dentistry their dental home, Drs. John and Cody Bauer and their dynamic staff are redoubling their efforts to offer the latest, most advanced dentistry in a warm, know-you-by-name atmosphere.

ONE-STOP DENTIST

Whether you’re looking for someone to stay on top of routine maintenance of your teeth and gums, you need to get back on track with some restorative dentistry, or you’re ready to make some changes with a complete smile makeover, Mansfield Family Dentistry is your one-stop shop. With everything from dentures, crowns, and bridges to extractions and dental implants, there’s no need to be referred elsewhere for care. Drs. John and Cody Bauer can handle it. They even offer Invisalign Clear Tooth Aligners for straightening teeth and beautiful porcelain veneers to correct chips and gaps.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Mansfield has more than doubled in size since John and Terri Bauer decided it was the perfect place to raise their family and establish their family dental practice. Through it all, they’ve placed an emphasis on relationships: with their patients, with their family, and with their community. The Drs. Bauer practice conservative dentistry with an emphasis on patient education and empowerment. Because it’s always better to preserve the natural tooth than to have to make restorations later, they spend time partnering with each patient, teaching them to advocate for their own optimum oral health.

This begins with routine cleanings and exams and includes things such as dental sealants and fluoride treatment to keep natural teeth and gums healthy and intact.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Sometimes you’re just not happy with the smile you have. They understand that. Whether you’re repairing damage to your teeth or just wanting to tweak what the Good Lord gave you, Drs. John and Cody Bauer can sit with you, listen to your wishes and desires and compile a cosmetic dentistry treatment plan, to give you that fully-functioning, gorgeous smile you’ve been dreaming of. They’ve invested in the very latest dental advancements, including laser dentistry, 3D CT scanner, painfree injections, digital impression technology (no more gooey impress material), and gum disease laser therapy. Then they can finish off your

beautiful, healthy smile with in-office laser tooth whitening.

IMPLANTS

On occasion, the natural tooth is beyond help and you need a viable replacement. When you do, the Drs. Bauer can provide you with a dental implant that’s undistinguishable from your natural tooth. It’s a permanent, natural-looking tooth that’s anchored to your jaw with a titanium post giving you the same function and biting strength as your natural tooth and preserving your facial structure.

CHILDREN’S DENTISTRY

What better vote of confidence can a dentist receive that to watch a child grow up in their practice then return with their own kids. Dr. John Bauer can’t believe it (Where did the time go?) but he’s now seeing his fourth generation of patients. Now he and Dr. Cody are treating grandparents, parents, children, then—amazingly—those kids have grown and their kids are sitting in the dental chair. For children as young as three, the Mansfield Family Dentistry team takes it slow, talking to kids, explaining each thing they do before they do it, and taking extra time to educate parent and child about caring for the only set of teeth they’ll ever have.

LEAVING A LEGACY

Over three decades, the Bauer family and their long-time employees have grown with Mansfield and have changed the lives of their patients offering gentle, conservative dentistry and highly personalized care. Find out more at MansfieldDentistry.com or call (817) 473-0291 to schedule an appointment.

DESIRE OR DUTY?

A FEW MONTHS AGO I ATTENDED A WORSHIP EVENT IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. I HAD GONE TO THE SAME EVENT THE YEAR BEFORE AND WAS IMMERSED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND CHALLENGED TO A CLOSER WALK WITH HIM. THIS YEAR THE FIRST FEW HOURS WERE DIFFERENT. I SAT IN THE AUDIENCE AS AN OBSERVER, HESITANT TO PARTICIPATE AS MY MIND RACED IN A THOUSAND DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.

I BEGAN TO EVALUATE MY RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND REALIZED MY HEART HAD GROWN COLD. WHILE I STILL WENT TO CHURCH EVERY WEEK, PRAYED, AND READ DEVOTIONALS AND MY BIBLE, I HAD LITTLE DESIRE FOR GOD. THIS REALIZATION SHOOK ME AS I KNEW IT DID NOT PLEASE THE LORD AND I WANTED MORE—MORE OF HIM, MORE SATISFACTION, MORE JOY, MORE MEANING OUT OF LIFE. AS I TOOK INVENTORY OF MY LIFE THE FACTS WERE CLEAR—I DID ALMOST EVERYTHING FROM A SENSE OF DUTY. MY MARRIAGE, MY CHILDREN, MY CHURCH ATTENDANCE—I DID WHAT I THOUGHT WAS REQUIRED OF ME AND LITTLE MORE.

As I sat surrounded by anointed musicians and passionate worshippers, I asked God to forgive me. With an earnest plea, I asked Him to awaken desire in me for Him, for my family, for ministry, for His people, for His ways. I searched for books with the words “Duty vs. Desire” and wouldn’t you know it—a classic written in the ‘80s came up in my search—Desiring God by John Piper. The title sounded familiar, I knew the author, and after reading the sample chapter, I knew it was a book I needed in the moment.

After the first worship set, Todd White took the stage. As he began to share His great love for the Father, I wept. His passion and conviction were contagious. He was and has been on fire for God since his salvation 14 years ago. He doesn’t stay that way through passive living, however. Todd White pursues God passionately from a desire that has been stoked day after day, year after year. Desire for God doesn’t come from feeding the flesh. It doesn’t come from living as close to the world as possible. It comes through an intentional determination to ignore the wants of the flesh and the cries of the soul, and a laser-like focus on the things of the spirit.

We’ve been rocked to sleep by the serenade of hyper-grace, unaware that grace is the power given to us to live Christ-like, not a catch-all excuse to avoid holiness. While salvation is instant, sanctification is a process, one that continues throughout our lives until we are transformed into the image of Christ. The Word is clear that Christ will one day return for His bride, the

church—a bride without spot or wrinkle—not a bride that looks for every opportunity to get by, to cuss a little, to walk so close to the world it’s hard to tell the difference, but a bride dressed in white, saved by grace through faith, sanctified, holy (set apart for a special purpose), through the daily encounters with God and His Word.

Much of the world can quote John 3:16, but do we know John 3:36? It says, “He who believes in (has faith in, clings to, relies on) the Son has eternal life. But whoever disobeys (is unbelieving toward, refuses to trust in, disregards, is not subject to) the Son will never see (experience) life, but the wrath of God abides on him [God’s displeasure remains on him; His indignation hangs over him continually]” (AMPC). Pause, and calmly think about that verse. If we don’t obey Christ, if we don’t submit to Him, the wrath of God comes upon us.

I challenge us today to submit to God daily by carving out time in our busy schedules to meet Him in the secret place. We cannot be transformed into His image without time spent with Him. We cannot develop desire for Him all on our own. Piper says it this way, “Not to enjoy God is to dishonor Him. To say to Him that something else satisfies you more is the opposite of worship. It is sacrilege.”

JIM LANCASTER, CEO

Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington

A Caring Community Partner

Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington is a unique facility specializing in comprehensive outpatient and inpatient treatment of orthopedic and spine disorders. The hospital has 10 operating rooms, a full-service ER, complete diagnostic imaging capabilities and on-site physical therapy, rehab and a new Pain Management Center.

Baylor Arlington prides itself on helping its patients get back to enjoying life. But their commitment to caring goes beyond the unsurpassed medical care it provides to its patients. The hospital is proud to partner with organizations across the Arlington and Mansfield communities and beyond to provide meaningful programs and events that enhance the culture, education

and health of the communities where its patients live and work.

“At our core, we’re a hospital that cares deeply about helping people live the most healthy, active and complete lives they can,” said Allan Beck, CEO of Baylor Arlington. “This means much more to us than providing world-class orthopedic and spine care: It means getting involved in causes and with organizations that enrich the lives of people in our neighborhood, and that help make this area a great place to live and work.”

Baylor Arlington’s Charity Care program provides financial assistance for medical procedures and services for patients meeting certain financial need criteria. This support ranges from help with

large insurance deductibles, copays and premiums, to assistance with everyday living expenses related to a patient’s treatment. Medical financial support is based on a patient’s need, insurance coverage and ability to pay, among other factors. More information is available at www.baylorarlington.com/financeoptions/.

The hospital also extends its care for community by working with organizations to provide cultural enrichment, education, medical outreach and other services.

Baylor Arlington’s title sponsorship of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Levitt Pavilion concert seasons is a great example of how the hospital has become a valuable community partner and a champion for the arts, helping present more than 50

free outdoor concerts for music fans of all ages. Similarly, Baylor Arlington partners with The LOT Downtown in Mansfield to provide another unique place for people to come together to enjoy life through the arts through free, family-friendly entertainment including movies, music and theater productions.

Another key community partnership is with the University of Texas at Arlington. Baylor Arlington is the official orthopedic provider of UTA Athletics. This partnership includes providing medical care to student athletes in all UTA Athletic programs from basketball to volleyball to baseball.

Beyond cultural and education enrichment programs, Baylor Arlington has touched

countless lives through its commitment to education and youth services, including programming at the River Legacy Science Center, Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington, Mansfield ISD Education Foundation and Salvation Army’s Youth Education Town. Through support from Baylor Arlington and other sponsors, these organizations have provided needed programs to support the education and personal development of youth from across the Arlington area.

Finally, Baylor Arlington partners with several organizations to support medical research, outreach and wellness programs both in the local community and globally. Partners include the Arthritis Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Faith in Practice, Eagle Condor

Humanitarian and Canine Companions for Independence. Through support of these programs, the hospital extends the impact of its industry-leading medical expertise and care well beyond its own walls.

The Arlington community is fortunate to have Baylor Arlington as an active, caring neighborhood partner. Beyond its unsurpassed medical care, the hospital plays a critical role in helping valuable organizations develop and continue programming that helps make Arlington a strong, vibrant community.

HUMAN STORIES OF TRANSITION AND TRIUMPH

STACY

Stacy Rountree didn’t give it much thought when her doctor wanted to follow up her routine mammogram with an ultrasound. “I had fibroids starting in my thirties, so I was always diligent about annual mammograms,” she said. “When they called me to come in and see something on the ultrasound, I didn’t even think to mention it to my 7th and 11th grade daughters.”

But the “something” turned out to be three small masses. “They just looked like dots,” Stacy said. “We followed with a biopsy and they came back showing cancer.” The good news is that Stacy’s diligence meant her cancer was caught at the earliest possible stage. The oncologist gave Stacy options, but she knew what she wanted to do.

“I was going to watch my daughters grow up,” she said. “I was going to watch them go to college. I was going to watch them get married.” She scheduled a double mastectomy. “I already had bladder surgery scheduled and I told my doctor I wanted to do everything back-to-back,” Stacy said. “He thought I was crazy, but I had my bladder surgery, moved to the next O.R., had my mastectomy, moved to the next O.R., and had my reconstruction, all in 15 hours.”

“With every person who came in my path, I could see the fingerprints of God,” Stacy said. “He was with me every step of the way. The doctors told me I’d be back at work in six weeks, but I was back in two. We’d caught it so early that I didn’t even have to do chemotherapy.”

“God has given me so many chances to share my story,” Stacy said. “I received so much love from my friends, my church, the school system, the PTA. My husband, Bruce, loved me through it. My sister-in-law and dearest friend was amazing! If I could scream from the mountaintop, I’d tell other women to have a baseline done when you’re 30, then another when you’re 40. That’s how they caught mine so early, because they could see the differences. That’s why I was able to skip chemo and radiation.”

“As long as I’m alive, my girls and other people I love will be diligent about their screenings,” Stacy said. “We love life! We know God took me through this and now I can walk with other women and their families through it.” Stacy is loving life more than ever now. Not only has she watched both of her girls grow up and marry wonderful men, but she and Bruce are now awaiting the birth of twin grandbabies.

“IF I COULD SCREAM FROM THE MOUNTAINTOP, I’D TELL OTHER WOMEN TO HAVE A BASELINE (MAMMOGRAM) DONE, WHEN YOU’RE 30, THEN ANOTHER WHEN YOU’RE 40. THAT’S HOW THEY CAUGHT (MY CANCER) SO EARLY.”

MEGAN

Megan Perkins was younger than the average person when she was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. “It was a week before my ninth birthday,” she said. “I was feeling badly and being treated with antibiotics when an on-call doctor noticed bruises on my legs. I was a tomboy, so my parents hadn’t thought anything of it. The doctor felt that my spleen was enlarged and did a blood test. He told my parents to go home and pack a bag. We were going to the hospital.” Once there, tests confirmed cancer.

Megan was one of the lucky ones. “I was so young that I didn’t really know what cancer was,” she said. “I knew I was sick, but the doctors were taking care of me. So, I just figured I’d be fine. They told my parents to keep my childhood as normal as possible and that’s what they did.” And fine she was. In remission within two weeks, she learned later that she’d just dodged receiving head radiation for her condition—a practice that they had just discontinued for her condition that led to some unfortunate side effects for many later in life.

But the diagnosis changed Stacy. “I’d been a very angsty kid,” she said. “Seeing the compassion extended to me by my peers made me a much nicer person. I think I handled my teen years and young adult years differently, because this experience helped put life in perspective for me. It made me take many things in life far less seriously. Megan is 45 now, and has two kids of her own. “I had healthy pregnancies and healthy babies,” she said. “I participate in a lifelong study on adults who survived childhood cancer. I undergo bone marrow and spinal taps every three years. There’s been no sign of cancer since then.”

SCREENING IS KEY

Regular screening tests are the best way to find cancers early, when treatment is less drastic and more likely to work.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends regular, routine screenings for breast, cervical, and colorectal (colon) cancer, as well as lung cancer if you’re at high risk.

• Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early. Starting at age 45, women should have a mammogram every year. Check the complete guidelines at Cancer.org.

• The pap test can find abnormal cells in the cervix which may turn into cancer. The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause these cell changes. Pap tests also can find cervical cancer early, when the chance of being cured is very high.

• Colorectal cancer almost always develops from precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer.

• The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends yearly lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for people who have a history of heavy smoking and smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years and are between 55 and 80 years old.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED

Advancements in cancer treatment over the past 20 years are resoundingly encouraging. Improvements in chemotherapy and the development of targeted radiation greatly reduce the risk of damage to surrounding tissue. Cancer surgeries are far less invasive. Improved supportive therapies like antibiotics treat infections better, and blood growth factors speed recovery after chemotherapy.

But routine and regular screening is still the key to catching cancers when they’re most treatable.

LESSEN YOUR CHANCE

The American Cancer Society offers these simple steps to lessen your chance of developing cancer.

• Stay away from tobacco.

• Get to and stay at a healthy weight.

• Get moving.

• Eat healthy.

• Limit how much alcohol you drink.

SCOTT

Scott Daniels, Sr. was attending an out-of-town trade show when several people inquired about a swelling on the side of his face. “I hadn’t noticed anything when I shaved that morning, and my wife hadn’t mentioned anything,” he said. “But I scheduled an appointment to look into it when I got home.”

His doctor diagnosed a tumor, scheduled surgery, and removed it. “Everything went fine, and I thought that was that,” Scott said. “Then I got a call from the doctor’s office telling me to come in and bring my wife,” he said. “A biopsy of the tumor came back showing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I felt like someone punched me in the stomach. Right away, I asked him how long I had to live.”

But Scott says God blessed him with a good wife. “I knew Fran and I were in this together,” he said. “They set me up with 36 radiation treatment—and I won’t say they weren’t barbaric.” But that was 28 years ago, and Scott has been cancer-free since. “There were some side effects of the radiation,” he said. “During treatment, one side of my face looked perpetually sunburned. It stopped saliva production on that side of my face, my teeth totally went south, and I didn’t have to shave that side for 15 or 20 years.”

But Fran and Scott live a full, active life now, a life which includes golf, fishing, cruising, woodworking, crafting, and outreach ministries through their church. “When you hear the ‘c word,’ it’s easy to think it’s a death sentence,” Scott said. “But treatment has come a long way. I have no restrictions now and life is great.”

BEST FACE FORWARD

MAKE A FEW REFRESHING CHANGES BEFORE HOLIDAY EVENTS AND PHOTOS

WE ALL WANT to put our best face on when it comes time to visit with friends and family over the holidays. Amidst reminiscing and catching up on who’s doing what, social functions are also exciting places to show off that new haircut or cute cocktail dress. Of course, there are times when looking back at photos leaves you feeling less than fabulous. Luckily, there are quick ways to freshen up your

appearance before you rub elbows, so you can shine in your next holiday photo op as well as look and feel like your best self.

Medspas are great at perfecting your image while making you feel like a celebrity indulging in highend services. Most offer staple treatments, such as chemical peels, Botox, and dermal fillers to help smooth pesky lines, along with plenty of other empowering procedures. One way to experiment with hair that isn’t a new ‘do is laser hair removal (to remedy an uncomfortable mustache-like situation, for example). Or how about hitting the scene with to-die-for eyebrows? Many spas offer microblading, where shallow bladed incisions around the brow are filled with nonpermanent pigment to create more luscious, even eyebrows. For smoother skin, microdermabrasion gently exfoliates and smooths to address uneven skin tone, reduce unsightly pores, and minimize the appearance of scarring. Or maybe you’d love to slim down a bit before shimmying into that little black dress. Noninvasive fat reduction services, such as Coolsculpting, can help you reduce unwanted fat with little to no downtime.

One of the best ways to dazzle both on and off the camera is with your smile. Laser teeth whitening can dramatically turn up the wattage on your pearly whites. Your dentist will cover your teeth with a whitening agent and zap away stains. Or perhaps you’re ready to wow with a straight smile. Invisalign (clear braces) is a discreet way to straighten your teeth. With treatment plans that meet your orthodontic needs and budget, you can easily start alignment at any time. And when the holidays roll around, simply remove your clear aligner for wining and dining.

Most important is the mental approach you adopt about your appearance. We all have things we don’t like about the way we look. Rather than make changes through a lens of criticism and self-consciousness, try coming from a place of self-love. And if you decide to get something done, do it for yourself, not for others. After all, whether your family and friends are some of your biggest supporters or most honest critics, it’s important to lift each other up. Your positive energy is sure to rub off and inspire, and that’s the thing that will make the most lasting impression!

Get Your pre-baby Body Back

COULD IT BE TIME FOR A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

If you are a mom whose body has been ransacked by pregnancy and you’re ready for a change, a mommy makeover could be just what the doctor ordered. To be a good candidate, ideally it will have been six months to a year since you had your last baby and you aren’t planning on having more.

WHAT DOES A MOMMY MAKEOVER DO?

A mommy makeover typically rejuvenates a woman’s abdomen and breasts. The three most common procedures performed during a mommy makeover include a tummy tuck, breast surgery, and excess fat removal. Here is a breakdown:

tummy tuck

Pregnancy can sometimes cause the abdominal muscles to pull too far apart, resulting in diastasis recti, which leaves a protruding belly that puts extra strain on the back. An abdominoplasty (a.k.a. tummy tuck) can help correct this by sewing the abdominal muscles together much like a corset. Skin that has lost its

elasticity (ability to shrink back) and is peppered with stretch marks or has a crepe paper appearance can be pulled tight and the excess removed. The end result is a tighter core and a flatter tummy.

breast surgery

A breast lift will remove excess skin and reposition the nipple/areola higher on the breast to make them perkier. A breast reduction can remove the excess breast tissue and skin and reposition the nipple/areola. A breast augmentation can help restore breasts that have lost volume and size through inserting an implant (silicone or saline) under the breast tissue to fill out the breasts. Some moms might need a combination of these for the right affect.

fat removal

Stubborn pockets of fat can be removed to smooth and contour the abdomen. Liposuction is still the most popular procedure during a mommy makeover, but there are other non-invasive ways of eliminating excess fat, such as CoolSculpting.

things to consider BEFORE GOING

UNDER THE KNIFE

“A mommy makeover can help a woman feel stronger and more like herself after pregnancy, but no one should rush into surgery without careful consideration,” said Constance M. Chen, MD.

Here are her guidelines for deciding when a mommy makeover is advisable and will produce the best results:

• Be in good health and at your goal weight. Don’t use surgery as a shortcut to weight loss.

• Exhaust the possibility of exercise correcting the problem. Don’t use surgery to achieve what can be accomplished with exercise.

• It’s best to defer surgery until your family is complete. A subsequent pregnancy can undo the results of a mommy makeover.

• Have realistic goals and expectations for the outcome of surgery.

• Make sure you have the needed support for your recovery period.

ADVENTURE RENEWED S pirit

TRAVEL DESTINATIONS THAT’LL LEAVE YOU UPLIFTED FOR WHATEVER LIFE CHANGES COME YOUR WAY

In a hectic, tumultuous world, finding a place on earth that instills wonderment, if only for a few moments, makes an impression that lasts a lifetime.

Spirit-renewing experiences are deeply personal and often happen serendipitously as you explore new destinations. A singularly still moment while touring San Antonio’s Spanish missions, witnessing a double rainbow emerge from stormy skies over Matthias Church in Budapest—you never know when and where it will happen. Although spirit-awakening experiences can’t be forced, there are destinations that serve as a backdrop for them. This month I’ve recalled a few that have uplifted my spirit in surprising ways. Where will your spiritrenewing experiences take place?

Bear Butte

SOUTH DAKOTA

Just under 60 miles north of Mount Rushmore, Bear Butte rises from the prairie where bison roam. This small mountain of volcanic rock which has eroded away over millions of years remains a sacred site for Plains Indian tribes, such as the Cheyenne and the Lakota (Sioux).

Viewing Bear Butte from the road wasn’t necessarily as inspirational for me as some say it can be, but hiking the trail to the top offered a whole different perspective. Nearly every tree and bush is draped with lovingly crafted prayer cloths and tobacco ties—offerings left by indigenous people who have journeyed to this spiritual location. If you’re lucky, the sounds of ceremonial drums mingle with the rustlings of a breeze, and regardless of your religion, invite you to become immersed in the heartbeat of the mountain and the Native Americans who hold it sacred.

Wat Po

BANGKOK, THAILAND

Visiting Bangkok without touring a Wat (Buddhist temple complex) is like going to Paris without experiencing Notre Dame. Although it’s home to the famous reclining Buddha, I expected Wat Po, like the other wats I had toured, to be fascinating but not spirit-stirring. Yet upon entering the building where the Buddha lies sideways, head resting on his hand, I felt a sense of serenity pour over me. Perhaps it was the enormity of the shiny gold-leafed Buddha at 151 feet long and 50 feet tall, with his feet exquisitely decorated and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Or it may have been the saffron-robed Buddhist monks whose mere presence in the temple exudes an air of peacefulness. Or possibly it was just me, experiencing a spiritual place where time stands still.

Chartres Cathedral

CHARTRES, FRANCE

Having visited numerous gothic cathedrals before, the Cathedral Notre Dame at Chartres (located roughly an hour from Paris) took me by surprise. Perched on a hilltop, it is one of the world’s bestpreserved medieval cathedrals. Whether you are Christian, practice another faith, or are a spiritual seeker who connects with the site’s Druidic roots, the cathedral can leave you awestruck by the devotion of the faithful who built it and who have made pilgrimages to it over the centuries.

One of Chartres cathedral’s most interesting elements is literally right under your feet. Many believe the beautifully preserved limestone circuit labyrinth set into the floor represents the long and tortuous path pilgrims would have followed to reach the cathedral in medieval times. Today, it is a symbolic path to peace and tranquility. Walking it in the cathedral, I felt the labyrinth was a metaphor for life’s journey and became filled with quiet joy when I reached its center.

Newgrange IRELAND

At first glance it doesn’t look like much—a large, roundish, earthen-topped mound retained at its base by large keystones. Older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza, Newgrange holds a secret inside. A 62-foot-long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with three alcoves aligned with the rising sun at the winter solstice.

It doesn’t take long before your imagination runs wild at this Stone Age (Neolithic) passage tomb. Building the passage graves was a mammoth undertaking. Who were these people who designed and then constructed Newgrange with tools made from stone, wood, and antler? What was the solstice event like? Was there really a pyramidal-shaped stone at the center of the chamber which has disappeared? Newgrange is a place where you lose yourself in ideas about the past, about how humans have evolved, and about where we are today and where our journey will take us.

Three Dog Bakery

In 1989, three dogs, two guys and one $.59 biscuit cutter created the worlds first bakery for dogs. It’s revolutionary idea100% natural, wholesome, human quality ingredients give pet owners a new option in healthy feeding. What was radical “then” is what’s “in” right now.

Bred from a love of dogs, the concept of involving a pet pooch in the actual purchasing experience seemed like a natural combination of a dog and owner lifestyle. After all, owners know their dog is special and delight in seeing others treat them so. Just like the companies locations today, the original Three Dog Bakery store was an inviting and exciting place for pets and the people that treasure them to visit. Customers still enjoy the pleasant aroma of freshbaked pastries, treats and food for dogs in a comfortable setting where dogs are always welcome.

Three Dog Bakery has by far and (in dog years) the most seasoned team in the pet bakery industry. The management team supports the company’s bakery owners’ goals by sharing years of knowledge and experience in retail, consumer packaged goods and manufacturing to help keep each bakery on the path of continued success. That management team assists franchises in many ways, including:

• Leading culinary innovation and development of highquality, innovative dog food and treats

• Collaborating with partners on-site selection and bakery build-out

• Developing training programs that include pastry techniques, product and ingredient education, customer service and “pre-opening” operations classes

• Creating marketing programs for bakery store implementation to drive traffic and increase average ticket sales, including social media strategies

• Coaching franchises on key drivers of bakery success

• Increasing awareness and protection of the brand equity of Three Dog Bakery

Kim Harmon heads up a six person staff as well as her four bakery dogs Max, Cash, Tank and Beltre at the new Arlington location. The 2000 square-foot bakery located in the Whole Foods Shopping Center specializes in all-natural, fresh-baked dog treats and personalized celebration cakes, as well as premium dog food, toys, collars, and accessories. The bakery features many Three Dog Bakery favorites loyal fans have enjoyed over the years. It’s popular bakery case treats are sure to wow canine customers, including PupcakesTM, Celebration Cakes, Peanut Butter Cookies, Lickety Splits, Drooly Dream Bars and more. The shop will also carry prepared Three Dog Bakery items, including its top sellers, Classic Creams and Water Cookies.

Three Dog Bakery has a simple philosophy: “We’ve been making tails wag since 1989 and today our mission remains the same, feed the souls of dogs and the people that love them.”

“I have had such great feedback from customers.” Harmon says, this was our very first review: “They have a great selection of treats and chews for my pups. The employees were also extremely kind to them and really went out of their way to make sure they felt special.” Come see what all the fuss is about and don’t forget to bring your beloved pets to enjoy the fun!!

HOW TO QUIT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING

ALL YOUR LIFE, you’ve heard, from your parents, teachers, and friends, “Don’t be a quitter”. But most of us have things in our lives we need to quit—sooner rather than later. Whether you’re trying to stop smoking, overeating, overspending, being tardy, procrastinating, or anything else, there are logical steps to help kick that bad habit to the curb.

Whatever you’d like to quit, from nail-biting to overscheduling your time, the longer you’ve been doing it, the more challenging it will be to quit. Challenging, but not impossible.

HOW TO QUIT

1. Start by evaluating when you find yourself indulging in this negative behavior. What are the circumstances? How are you feeling? Are there triggers that set you off?

2. Keep a journal of the times you want to cave: when and under what circumstances. Try to look at your life from the outside in.

3. Keep your journal for at least a week then analyze the data and look for obvious triggers. Do you do it when you are anxious, bored, hungry, lonely, or overly tired?

4. Make a pros and cons list. How is your smoking, overspending, or overeating effecting your health? What are the consequences of your always being late or constantly procrastinating?

5. Consider how life would look, if you could quit? How would your life—and the lives of the people you love— be different without this albatross around your neck?

6. Do some research on just how bad this habit can be or how bad it could become.

7. Look for replacement activity. If you want to quit smoking, try eating sunflower seeds or chomping on carrot and celery sticks. If you’re trying to stop biting your nails, try chewing gum. If you’re overeating out of boredom, take up a new hobby or craft.

8. Fine yourself for offenses, either with money (which you can donate to a charity) or an unwelcome chore (litterbox, ugh!).

9. Remove temptation. Don’t keep junk food in the house. Avoid the smoking areas at work. Cut up all but one credit card and pay it off monthly.

10. Tell someone what you’re trying to quit and ask them to hold you accountable. If you can find someone who’s successfully relinquished the habit themselves, all the better. Be honest and let that person know how you’re progressing (or not).

Be patient with yourself, take things one day at a time, and celebrate even baby steps. You didn’t develop your bad habit overnight. So, give yourself time to CUT IT OUT!
