It seems like only yesterday we were buying

...end-of-year gifts for teachers, shopping for summer camps, and looking for that perfect, little strappy sundress. But, as we’ve learned from summers past, these three short months will fly by and, in no time, we’ll be shopping for school supplies and making our Christmas to-do list.

Before that happens though, be sure to take some time to enjoy the pleasures that come with summer in our beautiful state. Take in a Rangers game (or three). Float down the river with nowhere to go and all day to get there. Schedule your weekends around music festivals then drive home with the windows down. And barbeque “anything that crawls by and slows down”.

We also hope you’ll enjoy our annual Looks issue covering everything from liposuction and tummy tucks for that perfect beach body to home upgrades on a budget for a fresh, new look to your home. Enjoy some vaca ideas and light cuisine options. In honor of our nation’s 241st birthday, we’ll hear from a Navy Reservist on what it means to her to defend our nation. (And don’t look now but there are also ideas about getting the kids ready for back-to-school.)

And finally, I’d like to say, “Happy first anniversary” to my husband and soulmate. You are a gift from God and I can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together.

Summer is upon us! Kids are home. The Grand Prairie Library System has great activities through August to keep all ages connected. Take advantage of the early literacy programs to prepare children for kindergarten and stay on par in elementary school. For teens, spark a love of reading through hands-on STEAM programs, where kids create art, technology and games. Spanish speakers can attend Spanish GED and ESL classes, with daycare provided. Adults will enjoy computer classes, American Sign Language classes, Pinterest Club, Crazy Couponing and Zumba. Program and print something on the 3D printer. Create a video or use Photoshop on the Creation Station. Go online via www/gptx.org/library and select from thousand of e-books, audio books, movies, TV shows, and online resources. Nothing changes without education. And libraries provide free and equal access to connections, discovery and education for all regardless of age, means or background. Check yours out today!

One of the highlights of the summer is the celebrations we all can experience on Independence Day.

The 4th of July means fireworks, picnics, community celebrations and flags. In Mansfield, we have been fortunate the last 10 years to host a free community-wide event at Big League Dreams Sportspark. Mansfield’s Rockin 4th of July, set this year for Monday, July 3, gives our residents –and visitors from all over the state – a chance to celebrate Independence Day in a big way with games, music, food and, of course, fireworks.

It’s hard to believe 10 years have passed since we started this annual tradition. Each year it has grown and now Rockin’ 4th of July is one of the region’s top Independence Day celebrations. Families choose to come to our event because it’s a fun, safe and festive way to enjoy the holiday. And the fireworks are spectacular.

But beyond the hot dogs, bounce houses and fireworks is a deeper recognition that what we have as Americans is precious and deserves to be celebrated. From our veterans to our first responders, we take the time to say thank you for their sacrifices and acknowledge that we enjoy freedoms that others on this planet do not, and we express our gratitude for all that we have as Americans.

I hope you have a fun and safe Fourth of July holiday. Enjoy the time with your family and friends. But never forget that Independence Day is more than just a holiday.

Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Prairie had it’s first annual “Send a Kid to Camp” Golf Tournament at Prairie Lakes Golf Course. The turnout was awesome and it was a great day for golf, barbecue and some awesome give away’s and silent action items! “A week at church camp is one of the most pivotal weeks in the lives of students. It is then that they are able to escape the pressures of school and the temptations of American pop-culture that has become all too familiar” said James Robinson, Youth Pastor at Calvary Baptist. Riverbend Camp provides a place of refuge where kids can experience Christ. They specialize in providing a place for teens to step away from day-to-day life and spend time with God, creation and each other. 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 –And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.

I get a wee bit frustrated (in a nurturing, sisterly way) with my morning show co-host on 90.9 KCBI. His name is Jeff Taylor.

Jeff Taylor exists on a diet of Mountain Dew, Twinkies, and steak.

Oh wait, he likes coffee, too.

Jeff Taylor also gets kidney stones.

You know what is not good for kidney stones? Mountain Dew and coffee.

You know what is helpful with kidney stones? Lots of water.

Guess what Jeff won’t drink? Sigh.

I have a friend who gets terrible headaches.

“Why don’t you take something?” I ask. “No, no, no. I don’t need anything.” Sigh.

Kind of like me with grace.

Don’t get me wrong – I love grace. I’m desperate for grace. I need grace like I need air; every minute of every day.

So why do I resist it so much? Why do I try so hard to prove myself, as though I could win points with God? Why do I act like Jeff with his kidney stones or my friend and her headaches? I push and pull and strain against the very thing –the only thing – that brings relief.

I know these things. Yet still I find myself living a life contrary to grace. I call it the trap of do-more-be-more-try-harder.

I’m not alone, am I? Do we not all operate, at some level, under the guise that if we do-more-be-more-try-harder we will somehow increase our worth? We wear busyness like a badge of honor, as though the more harried we become the godlier we appear.

Oh boy.

This was driven home to me recently by an e-mail from a dear friend. This is a small portion of it:

I miss our talks, too. I tell you Rebecca, over the last couple of months I have been hurt so badly by people I love so dearly. I am realizing how much I need the Lord. I have realized how many things I did to get approval from people. I have stopped. I have been praying and thinking hard on every action I take. Is it for the Glory of God, to please people, or trying to be good enough? I’m realizing a lot about myself. It is a good time, but heartbreaking all the same. I love you and hope to get to spend some quality time with you soon.

It was like reading a page from my journal.

This is the response I sent. Little does she know I needed to read it more than she did.

Maybe you do, too.

Hey, sweet friend. I know just how you feel. Been there, been there, been there!

I am sorry you’ve been so hurt. I hope I am not one of the people who have hurt you! And please don’t feel down about yourself and the things the Lord is revealing to you. I know you know this, but He convicts because He loves. And if we are constantly being made over into the image of Christ that means we are constantly being poked, prodded, squeezed, pressed, and shaken. It won’t end until we graduate from skin to glory.

Here is what you need to swim around in for a while – because of the cross, there is nothing, NOT ONE THING that you can do to make yourself more acceptable to Him. Because of Jesus, His delight in you will never run drynot even on your worst day. He is not now and will never be angry at you, because He exhausted His anger on Christ. And as hard as you try to be holy, you will still struggle will pride. You will still judge people. You will

say things you shouldn’t say and think things you shouldn’t think. His grace has already covered those sins. The only thing you and I bring to our salvation is the sin that makes it necessary (thank you, Jeff Taylor).

Think about this - as much as a six year old may want to ride a bike, it just takes time and practice and bruised knees. Doing things well takes perseverance and patience. And as much as you and I want to be sanctified NOW, it takes a LIFETIME of walking with the Lord.

So.......

He loves you. It’s not about how well you love Him. You don’t love Him with your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength - you can’t. But that’s okay because it’s not about you loving Himit’s about Him loving you.

It’s not about you holding onto Him. It’s about Him never letting go of you.

It’s not about your sinlessness or you sinning less. It’s about Him, fulfilling the law perfectly, and absorbing the wrath of a Holy God. Why? Because we are sinners. And He is stronger than our sin.

It’s not even about your faithfulness. You only have faith because He planted it in you. It is about His faithfulness - no matter how many times you fail Him. And you will fail Him again. And again. And He knows it. And He still chose the cross.

That’s what grace is.

Grace is pretty cool, huh?

At home with Jeannine Hoang…

We met up with Jeannine Hoang and her beautiful family at their home and enjoyed a nice evening out by the pool. Keeping the kids out of the pool was a challenge but we managed to capture some great shots.

An Arlington girl through and through, Jeannine Hoang married her high school sweetheart, Thien. They are proud parents of three and are blessed to both have their parents living nearby. “They’re a big part of our lives and our kids’ lives,” Dr. Hoang said. “We couldn’t do all we do without the help of our families and the support of the wonderful Arlington community.”

Dealing with WELLNESS

There’s plenty to see and do this time of year, but if you’re suffering from chronic dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) like nearly five million other Americans, it might not be as easy as it looks. Most sufferers, but not all, are over 50, with about 30 percent being women. The name sounds benign enough, but if you deal with dry eye, you know how miserable the condition can make you.

WHAT IS IT?

Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. It can occur because you don’t produce enough tears or if the tears you produce are of poor quality. Whatever the cause, chronic dry eye can leave you with eyes that sting or burn, can lead to light sensitivity, and can affect your vision over time. There’s no cure for dry eye, but there are treatments that can greatly alleviate discomfort.

SYMPTOMS

Signs and symptoms of dry eye include:

• A stinging, burning, or scratchy sensation in your eyes

• Stringy mucus in or around your eyes

• Sensitivity to light

• Eye redness

• A sensation of having something in your eyes

• Difficulty wearing contact lenses

• Difficulty with nighttime driving

• Watery eyes

• Blurred vision or eye fatigue

COMPLICATIONS

People with dry eye are more likely to experience:

• Eye infections

• Damage to the surface of the eye

• Light sensitivity (photophobia)

• Decreased quality of life

CAUSES

Tears are more than water. They are a complex mixture of water, fatty oils, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and mucus, which helps make the surface of your eyes smooth and clear, and protects your eyes from infection. Some causes of dry eye are:

• An imbalance in tear composition

• Aging

• Certain medical conditions

• Certain medications

• Laser eye surgery

• Tear gland damage from inflammation or radiation

• Wind, smoke, or dry air

• Blinking less often, while working at a computer, for instance

• Eyelid problems

TREATMENT

Depending on the severity of your dry eye symptoms and your doctor’s diagnosis of the cause, these treatments can help greatly:

• Artificial tears or over-the-counter eye drops

• Eliminating prescriptions that may be drying your eyes

• Drugs (such as antibiotics) to reduce eyelid inflammation

• Eyedrops to control cornea inflammation

• Eye inserts that work like artificial tears

• Tear-stimulating drugs

• Tear duct plugs (to keep tears from draining too quickly)

• Special contact lenses that bathe the eye

• Unblocking oil glands in the eye lid

• Light therapy and eyelid massage

LIFESTYLE

There’s also a lot you can do on your own to alleviate dry eye symptoms including:

• Eyelid washing (with baby shampoo or another mild soap) to unblock oil glands

• Eye gels or ointments at bedtime

• Warm washcloth compress to control inflammation

• Avoiding overly dry rooms or even using a room humidifier

• Frequent breaks from computer work (because we tend to blink less when on the computer)

• Positioning the computer lower (so eyes are less open)

• Wraparound sunglasses or other protective eyewear

• Smoking cessation

One of the simplest things you can do to treat dry eye is to replace your missing tears with artificial tears or eye drops. But if you find yourself using them more than four times a day, opt for the single-use preservative-free type available at most drug stores.

WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Scoliosis is a disorder that causes an abnormal curve of the spine. Spinal curves tend to be either S-shaped or C-shaped. The angle of the curve may be small, large, or something in between, but anything measuring more than 10 degrees is considered scoliosis.

WHAT CAUSES SCOLIOSIS?

In approximately 80 percent of cases, doctors can find no known cause. This type is called idiopathic scoliosis. Family history and genetics can be risk factors for idiopathic scoliosis. If you or one of your children has scoliosis, make sure your other children are regularly screened.

On the other hand, there are cases where the cause is known, and doctors divide these into two types, non-structural and structural scoliosis.

• Non-structural scoliosis –The spine works normally but looks curved. Doctors look for some underlying

cause to treat, such as one leg being shorter than the other or a recent serious inflammation like appendicitis. When the underlying cause is treated, the scoliosis often goes away.

• Structural scoliosis – The spine has a fixed curve which could be caused by a disease, injury, infection or birth defect.

WHO HAS SCOLIOSIS?

Anyone at any age can have scoliosis, but the most common type is idiopathic scoliosis in children from about age 10 to the early teens. And although both boys and girls develop mild scoliosis at about the same rate, girls have a much higher risk of the curve worsening and requiring treatment.

HOW IS SCOLIOSIS DIAGNOSED?

Doctors use medical and family history and various tests in diagnosing scoliosis. A diagnostic X-ray of the spine is also helpful, letting the doctor measure the curve of the spine in degrees to diagnose scoliosis.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS?

While most people have a mild form of scoliosis, it can sometimes cause complications.

• Lung and heart problems – In severe cases, the ribs can press against the heart and lungs making it difficult to breathe and harder for the heart to pump.

• Back pain – Adults who had scoliosis as children are more likely than others to suffer from chronic back pain.

• Appearance – Severe cases can lead to changes in appearance such as unlevel shoulders, prominent ribs, or uneven hips, which often causes individuals to be self-conscious about their appearance.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

The most common forms of treatment are observation, bracing and surgery.

• Observation – The doctor will check every 4 to 6 months to see if the curve is getting better or worse. This approach is commonly used for those still growing who have a mild curve.

• Bracing – If a child’s bones are still growing and they have a moderate case, the doctor may recommend wearing a brace. The brace won’t cure scoliosis or reverse the curve, but it usually prevents a progression of the curve.

• Surgery – If the spinal curve is 45 degrees or more, surgery may be recommended. Fusion surgery of the spine involves using a combination of bone grafts and metal rods, hooks, and screws to straighten the spine and hold it in place.

CAN EXERCISE HELP?

The National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases asserts that exercise programs have not been shown to keep scoliosis from getting worse. But it is important for all people, including those with scoliosis, to exercise and remain physically fit.

IF I LIFT WEIGHTS? WILL I GET “BULKY”

Let’s set the record straight, ladies. Lifting weights will not—we repeat, WILL NOT!—make you look like a bulky man-hulk. But if you’re still skeptical (and you’re not alone), keep reading.

“Many women have the misconception that lifting weights will create a masculine look,” explains personal fitness coach Claudia Virgil (ClaudiaVFit.com). “Without supplemented hormones, women cannot develop enough muscle mass to appear masculine.”

So, you can all breathe a sigh of relief as you literally don’t have enough testosterone to get big and bulky. Instead, building and strengthening your muscles will actually make you leaner and curvier in all the right places, provided you’re eating a healthy diet of lean meats, whole grains, and lots of veggies (and avoiding fried foods, cupcakes, and sodas).

HOW MUCH SHOULD I BE LIFTING?

Strength training is imperative for building lean muscle. But you have to tax your muscles for it to be worthwhile. You need to be struggling on the last few reps of each set for those fast-twitch muscle fibers to tear down so they can rebuild and reshape your body.

“If you can lift 5-pound dumbbells until eternity, you aren’t choosing a weight heavy enough to spark muscle growth,” Northington said. “Pick a challenging weight.”

Karey Northington, RN, CPT, a fitness nutritionist from Arizona (NorthingtonFitnessandNutrition. com). “The feeling of being ‘larger’ and the accompanying complaints of jeans feeling too tight stems from adding muscle but not eliminating body fat.”

Think about it. Fat mass is bulbous, chunky, and takes up a lot of room. Muscle is tight and compact. A 5-foot5, 130-pound woman with 35 percent body fat will look much larger than a 5-foot-5, 130-pound woman with only 16 percent body fat. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but it sure looks better on the body! Get it? Where to start? Ideally, you should be doing three to four sets of five to six strength-bearing exercises for 12 reps each set at least three times a week. If you don’t know where or how to begin, consider hiring a personal trainer.

Common skin conditions and what you can do about them

It’s summer in Texas and that means time to show more skin, skin, skin. But if you have embarrassing skin problems, this summer’s strappy little sundresses and off-the-shoulder styles might have you more than a little worried. With that in mind, this month we’re taking a look at some common skin problems and how to treat them, just in time to rock those sassy summer fashions.

SKIN TAGS

WHAT ARE THEY?

Skin tags are small flaps of benign tissue that hang off the surface of the skin on the face, neck, chest, back, armpits, or groin area in about half the population, usually after midlife. Experts disagree on what causes them but some theories are skin rubbing against skin and building up collagen where skin is thickest, hormonal changes due to pregnancy, steroidal use, and heredity.

WHAT TO DO

Your dermatologist can help by removing them with a scalpel, medical scissors, or laser, or using freezing or burning treatments or topical medications. But since skin tags tend to reoccur, you might consider natural alternatives including:

• Cutting off the blood supply using rubber bands or dental floss to tie off the tag at its base

• Soaking the pad of a band-aid with apple cider vinegar and applying it over the tag overnight each night for 10-14 days

• Taking the same approach with an essential oil blend of equal parts cedar, melaleuca (tea tree), and lavender

• Using an over-the-counter product called Tag Away with evergreen oil as its active ingredient

THE MIND/SKIN CONNECTION

Emotions can play havoc with your skin. In fact, the stress/ skin connection has prompted a whole new medical discipline known as psychodermatology, which examines the interaction between our mind and our skin. You’ve probably noticed your face breaking out or existing skin conditions worsening when you’re particularly nervous or anxious. Stress can also negatively affect how skin medications work.

Because dermatologists specialize in diseases of the skin and not psychotherapy, more and more dermatologists are working cooperatively with therapists, psychologists, or psychiatrists to help address psychodermatology issues in their patients.

ECZEMA

WHAT IS IT?

Eczema is a form of dermatitis that causes an itchy rash, characterized by dry, red, flaking skin, inflammation, and even blistering, cracking, oozing, or sometimes bleeding. The actual cause is unknown but contributing factors are believed to be poor circulation in the limbs, dry weather, an overactive immune system reacting to environmental factors or internal physiological factors, aging, or genetic predisposition.

WHAT TO DO

Your dermatologist might prescribe pharmaceuticals such as prednisone, betamethasone, or antibiotics, or you can try treating it naturally by:

• Supplementing your diet with proteolytic enzymes and omega-3 fatty acids, to control systemic inflammation

• Using immunomodulators such as L-carnosine, CMO, and colostrums to control an overactive immune system

• Addressing the trigger (assuming you can identify it), such as improving vitamin circulation, using a humidifier in the house, or using dust mite covers on your bed

PSORIASIS

WHAT IS IT?

Psoriasis is a chronic, often lifelong condition that’s best defined as “a non-contagious inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurring reddish patches covered with silvery scales.” Psoriasis causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. For some people, psoriasis is disabling, although symptoms may improve for a time or even go into remission. The condition has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and higher risk of cancers. Unfortunately, there’s no known medical cure, but treatments can offer significant relief.

WHAT TO DO

There’s a lot you can do on your own to quiet Psoriasis symptoms including using a nonprescription cortisone cream, exposing your skin to small amounts of natural sunlight, losing excess weight, undertaking a full-body detox to clean out possible antagonists, or using systemic proteolytic enzymes to reduce inflammation.

WHAT ARE THEY?

A wart is a hard, benign growth on the skin caused by a virus.

WHAT TO DO

You may see your dermatologist who can try freezing it with liquid nitrogen, giving you an injection to stimulate the immune system, removing it with a laser or scalpel, or burning it in a process called electrosurgery. Or you can try treating warts at home by:

• Applying over-the-counter salicylic acid solutions (such as Compound W)

• Repeatedly applying a band aid soaked in an essential oil blend of equal parts cedar, melaleuca (tea tree), and lavender

• Asking your dermatologist to prescribe an athome chemical peel containing salicylic acid tretinoin, and glycolic acid

DANDRUFF

WHAT IS IT?

Dandruff is a catchall term for itching and flaking of the skin of the scalp. Dandruff can actually be caused by oily skin as much as by dry skin. But it can also be the result of localized eczema, psoriasis, or an overgrowth of a yeast called malassezia, which can be the result of chlorine in the shower killing off good beneficial bacteria on your scalp.

WHAT TO DO

Treatments for dandruff include:

• Dandruff shampoos, although symptoms tend to return, as soon as you discontinue use

• Having hormones balanced with progesterone or estriol crèmes

• Obtaining a chlorine filter for your shower

• Supplementing your diet with a good proteolytic enzyme formula and omega-3 fatty acids to control systemic inflammation

• Using immunomodulators such as L-carnosine, CMO, and colostrums to control overactive immune systems

EAT YOUR WAY TO BETTER SKIN

Some scientists believe these five foods can improve the health and appearance of your skin.

• Low-fat yogurt

This yummy snack is packed with Vitamin A, an element vital to our skin’s health, which also helps our intestines. And anything that helps keep digestion normal will be reflected in healthy-looking skin. Vitamin A also aids in repairing skin tissue, benefitting people with dry and flaky skin.

• Antioxidant-rich fruits

Blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, and plums have high antioxidant content which helps prevent cell damage, to keep your skin looking younger longer. Also high in antioxidants are artichokes, beans, prunes, and pecans.

• Salmon

Salmon contains fatty acids which help strengthen cell membranes, allowing cells to more efficiently lock in moisture and even prevent inflammation in our arteries, as do walnuts and flax seed oil.

• Whole-wheat bread products

Whole-wheat bread has been found to possess higher levels of selenium which is believed to lower the risk of skin cancer and other kinds of cancer. You can also increase your selenium with turkey, tuna, and brazil nuts.

• Green tea

Green tea acts as an anti-inflammatory, helping to prevent skin tumors, defend against skin cancers, and fight UV radiation damage.

TUCKED AWAY

Understanding the differences between liposuction and a tummy tuck

Does your midsection give you pause? Do you have loose, excess skin or a stubborn layer of abdominal fat you’d like to get rid of? If the answer feels like yes, and you want to do something about it, you might find yourself looking at procedures like liposuction or a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). But how do you know which one is right for you?

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE ANYWAYS?

Deepak Raj Dugar, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills, is familiar with the difference between the two procedures. “Liposuction is a suction-assisted cannula (thin tube) procedure where tiny incisions are made in the skin. Small metal cannulas are introduced, and using suction technology with manual back-and-forth motions, fat is slowly ‘sucked’ out of the body from under the skin,” he said. “A tummy tuck is an invasive surgery that removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.”

Liposuction is typically used for healthy patients who have otherwise normal skin tone without an abundance of excess skin and want to get rid of “superficial” fat that is cushioned between the skin and the muscle. A tummy tuck is generally recommended for patients who have excess sagging skin and weakened muscles due to major weight loss, pregnancy, aging, or heredity.

AESTHETICS

WHICH LAYER NEEDS HELP?

Here’s a quick way to assess if you need a tummy tuck or liposuction. “Basically [your abdomen] is a three layer pie: the bottom layer is the muscle, the middle layer is the fat, and the top layer is the skin,” said Dr. Dugar. “If the fat is the only layer that is problematic, liposuction is ideal. If muscle or skin are problematic in addition to fat, then a tummy tuck is ideal.” However, it is very important to note that your diagnosis may not be as simple as you think, which means a qualified surgeon is the one who ultimately should address and diagnose the layers that are involved and give their expert opinion on treatment options.

BENEFITS AND DRAWBACKS

LIPOSUCTION

Advantages of liposuction include very minimal scarring, generally reduced costs depending on where you go and if you do fat transfer in addition to liposuction, and less down time. On the downside, you may have more soreness and increased potential for sub-par results. Liposuction is “very surgeon dependent,” said Dr. Dugar. “It’s not a simple procedure, despite what people think. Depending on the surgeon, you can have smooth, toned results, or you can have lumpy bumpy results if the surgeon is not meticulous with fat removal.”

TUMMY TUCK

Pros include more permanent results with some tightening of abdominal muscles in addition to removal of excess skin and fat. Cons include longer downtime, a permanent scar (located in the bikini line), recovery from a more invasive surgery, and higher costs.

“The biggest advantage of a tummy tuck over liposuction is that for the appropriate candidate with loose skin, muscle laxity, and excess fat, it gives a dramatic improvement, creates a nice waistline, lifts loose pubic skin, recreates a nice youthful belly button, and flattens the tummy by tightening the muscles in a superior way to what liposuction can achieve,” said George Bitar MD, FACS, an award winning, fellowship trained, board certified plastic surgeon practicing in Washington D.C. “I tell my patients to think of liposuction as snorkeling and a tummy tuck as scuba diving––more risk but more reward.”

A WORD OF CAUTION

Before you get too far, take time to choose your physician wisely. “In this day and age of flashy websites and great marketing, the consumer should not lose sight of the fact that both liposuction and tummy tucks are surgical operations that should not be minimized—they can have serious consequences,” explained Dr. Bitar. Do your research and choose an experienced, knowledgeable physician with a track record of success.

IDEAL CANDIDATE CHECKLIST FOR TUMMY TUCK OR LIPOSUCTION

According to George Bitar MD, FACS, an ideal candidate for these types of cosmetic procedures has to meet the following criteria before the individual’s operation of choice:

• Has to be an appropriate candidate both mentally and medically.

• Has to have realistic expectations (they cannot expect to get tummy tuck results with liposuction).

• Must understand that neither a tummy tuck nor liposuction is a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise.

• Must understand having children or gaining weight after either procedure can change the results––sometimes very significantly––and to choose wisely at the time when the procedure is done.

Wax On

WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO DO IT RIGHT

Before you slip into that bikini or lace up those boardshorts, you might hit the salon for a Brazilian or a back wax. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular, there are a few things you need to know before and after you go.

“Some people come in having never waxed before and they’re not ready, so they cry ‘uncle’ halfway through a Brazilian,” said Ava Trujillo, a licensed esthetician based in California who’s had nearly 10 years of experience waxing clients.

Trujillo recommends starting with a bikini wax to adjust to the discomfort and aftermath. As it turns out, there’s a bit of an “ouch” factor to waxing. The more sensitive the area, the more it stings. Following a wax, skin won’t be quite swimsuit-ready. It will be red and prone to breakouts for a day or two.

“Don’t schedule your wax the same day you’re going to the beach,” Trujillo said. “Plan your wax 24 to 48 hours ahead, depending on your skin’s sensitivity.”

A FEW MORE BANGS FOR THE BUCK

• Replace the showerhead. These are inexpensive and easy to install, and you can start your day on the right foot with a great shower experience. A handheld shower head is great for different heights, from tall adults to children and even pets.

• Create a simple path through your yard or garden using irregularly shaped flagstones, and apply sealant to the stones to give them a permanent wet look.

• If you have a bland concrete driveway or walkway, a brick border can add color and charm.

• Install a programmable thermostat. Regulating your home’s temperature will be a breeze using one of these and will save you about $150 a year in utility bills.

• Install a new bathroom vent fan. If there’s mold in your shower or your bathroom mirror is foggy, it might be time to install a new vent fan. The end result will be a bathroom that is fresh, dry, and odorfree.

A HOUSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR

With an eye on your home’s look, start by taking into account the era and style of your home. Trying to update a 1950s ranch home or a Victorian manor with modern colors can suggest an identity crisis. Pick a color from history—one that’s era appropriate for your home.

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR

If there is a chance of a For Sale sign gracing your lawn in the foreseeable future, take that into account when choosing a color palette for your home’s exterior. Shades of white, putty, and dove grey are classics. You can add intrigue and style by adding a brighter color on the front door.

ALL SHADES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL

Some colors don’t age well and fade rapidly. Your sunny yellow can look a little overcast if the paint color is not specifically recommended for exterior. Your professional painter and the knowledgeable paint store employees can assist you with that.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR (HOME EDITION)

When determining which colors to use, think about what colors you would pair in your wardrobe. Would you wear those colors together? If you are working with brick or other features that won’t be painted, coordinate your trim colors with those.

Will the palette seem dated in a year? Because your home’s exterior won’t be painted frequently, it is not the place to be ultra-trendy. For most home styles, limiting your use of bold colors is a wise choice. You can select one color that pops, while using another daring accent color sparingly. TRUE COLORS

Check out large samples of trim paint next to the main color you are considering. If you are wanting to paint your house light blue, make sure the trim is not going to make it appear lavender.

OUT OF THE CLEAR BLUE

If you have a covered porch, consider adding a shade of blue on the

porch ceiling. It is an old Southern tradition, which adds a feeling of blue sky even on the darkest of days. And there may be some added benefit to the cheery ceiling—several house painters consulted believe the color discourages mud daubers and wasps from building their homes by fooling them into thinking the blue is sky.

INSPIRATION POINT

Look around you for inspiration. Are there homes in your neighborhood with color palettes you admire? Take a drive and contemplate what looks good on other houses, especially those with a similar look to your house. However, it is probably best to not enter into a “Who Wore It Best” contest with the house next door.

Consider the landscape surrounding your home. Do you want your home blend into the background or stand out? There is no wrong answer to that question.

BE A RULE FOLLOWER

If you live in a restrictive HOA, it is better to ask permission than face the possibility of having to repaint. Submit your proposed color palette and wait for final approval, or your homeowners’ association could be seeing red over your hot pink shutters.

Time for a Summer Spruce?

Is your barren yard in dire need of a summer spruce? (Sheepishly raises hand.) Making plans to plant a few trees is a great place to start. Much like any other relationship, many trees grow more beautiful with time. Others create decades of annoyance, dropping sticks or messy fruit, leaving you wondering if it’s time for the axe. When it comes to trees (also like relationships), the last thing you want to do is make a hasty decision. But how to know which trees are right for you?

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU’LL WANT TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING “THE PERFECT TREE.”

Step one: determine your intentions. Ask yourself why you want a tree. For shade? For privacy? A little eye candy? Maybe you just want to block the view of your neighbor’s ugly backyard. The answers to these initial questions should bring some clarity.

Next, you’ll want to determine what kind of commitment you’re looking for. Hardwoods tend to grow slower and live longer. Fast growers tend to

be smaller, have softer wood, and generally don’t live as long. It’s also important to note that deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall and are bare all winter. Evergreen trees and shrubs retain their foliage year-round.

WHEN WE’RE TALKING TREES, SIZE MATTERS. The experts at Better Homes and Gardens say trees should be scaled to their surroundings. A good rule of thumb (no matter the size of house or yard): place smaller trees closer to the house, and taller trees farther out, along the edges of your property. You’ll also want to find out what kind of soil you’re working with.

Finally, you’ll want to consider the potential liabilities. Some trees have thorns, making them less suitable for children. Others are messy. Some trees are better matched for the country or suburbs, while others can handle the urban life. You may even want to consult a professional landscaper or gardener, or even an expert at your local nursery or home repair shop.

The Texas Tree Planting Guide (at TexasTreePlanting.TAMU.edu—from the Texas A&M Forest Service), says these are a few of the best types of trees for growing in Dallas.

TALL TREES

• Cedar Elm: This deciduous tree is drought tolerant and a good shade tree.

• Italian Stone Pine: An evergreen with edible pine “nuts” with a rounded shape and nice crown.

MEDIUM TREES

• Bigtooth Maple: Native of the Hill Country, good for moist, well-drained soils and nicely handles shady sites.

• Goldenraintree: A good all-rounder for urban settings, it has a reliable fall color and attractive brown seed pods in late summer.

SMALL TREES

• Rusty Blackhaw: An excellent specimen tree with few problems, has showy flowers but requires good drainage.

• Mexican Plum: This deciduous tree provides good fall color (yellow to red to purple), and prefers well-drained soil. This tree features bright white flowers in the spring and edible flowers.

A Grand Vacation

Family trekking through artsy Sedona and the magnificent Grand Canyon

Deciding to splurge on a weeklong family vacation was easy. Choosing a destination everyone was on board with… not so much. Our children are eclectic—the adventurous, fun-loving scientist, the posh princess accountant, the artsy new age actor and playwright. (And thankfully, a couple of significant others who are generally up for anything.) After weeks of searching for potential destinations, we came up with a trip that offered something for everyone—Sedona, Arizona, with a twonight stay at the Grand Canyon. We bought airline tickets and booked an upscale condo and a hillside house with breathtaking views so everyone would have enough room. And then we went.

Blazing Sunset Among the Red Rocks

The drive from the Phoenix airport to Sedona was mostly unremarkable, winding through miles of brown desert hills dotted with cacti. Then the road curved and suddenly magnificent red rock formations appeared. The views were so breathtaking that we quickly understood why everyone raves about Sedona. With the sky ablaze at sunset and the red rock hills serving as a backdrop, nature in all its glory welcomed us to this slice of desert heaven on earth.

High in the Sky

My husband and I were up before daybreak to take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. The kids opted to spend the morning hiking the two-mile round trip trail to Devil’s Bridge, the largest natural stone arch in the Sedona area.

Having never ballooned before, I was a bit apprehensive, but climbing into the high basket while wearing tight fitting jeans ended up being the only real obstacle I had to overcome. Once we were in the basket, our self-professed “balloon driver” fired up the burner and we began to gently float up and away. The absolute silence and stillness between burner firings was blissfully peaceful. As we glided through the air, the thin morning light gave us a birds-eye view of the sprawling countryside beneath us. We spied jack rabbits foraging as the desert came to life.

That evening we compared our adventures of the day while preparing dinner at the house, which had a fabulous deck with a grill and large open kitchen and dining area. The wine and conversation flowed as we dined on a crisp salad, sizzling steaks, perfectly grilled chicken, and veggies. The familial feast ended with light angel food cake, fresh strawberries,

and whipped cream. Delicious in any setting, but moreso while surrounded by family.

Over the Boulders

The next morning my husband and I sipped coffee while admiring gorgeous vistas through huge picture windows, then did a bit of hiking on the trails behind the house to help work off dinner from the night before. Around noon our family met up at Pink Jeep Tours for a private off-road adventure. The Jeep, specially modified for climbing over boulders, crawled along the rugged terrain as majestic red rock formations loomed above us. The slopes weren’t vertical, but it sure felt like it a couple of times! Once we reached our destination— Merry-Go-Round Rock—we were in awe of the jaw-dropping panorama. Our day ended at award-winning Elote Cafe, which, hands down, has the best cuisine in Sedona. The menu highlights include entrees such as grilled adobo-seasoned wild Alaskan halibut with salsa verde and lime aioli, and pork cheeks served with cascabel chile sauce, grandma’s corn cake, and buttermilk cumin drizzle. Luckily, we went hot air ballooning the day before this meal, otherwise the balloon may not have made it off the ground!

Two Unforgettable Nights at the Grand Canyon

The drive from Sedona to the Grand Canyon takes a couple of hours. As for the Grand Canyon itself—how does one describe the indescribable? I can only imagine what the early explorers thought when they first laid eyes on this vast, powerful, and awe-inspiring canyon. You can’t help but wonder about your place in the world when you’re standing at the edge. We hiked along the well-

maintained Rim Trail, often peering into the steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River. Admittedly, the kids hiked farther than my husband and I did. Instead, we drove to the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, which allows you to walk 70 feet out from the rim and peer a mile down into the canyon from the glass floor!

After an active day, we freshened up and unwound with drinks and dinner at El Tovar Dining Room, where Old World elegance meets with contemporary cuisine and a great wine list. My thoroughly carnivorous husband enjoyed the hand-cut, locally sourced grilled New York Strip with a coffee dry rub and a 1554 lager demi-glace. I ordered the boneless chicken breasts over angel hair pasta with mushroom sherry sauce—a dish that has been on El Tovar’s menu since 1947.

Up bright and early on our second day at the Grand Canyon, we rode mules 2,300 feet down precarious cliff switchback paths and dusty ledges to the bottom of the Canyon. Suffering from acrophobia a bit, I had to close my eyes a couple of times, but the unforgettable ride was well worth it.

That evening, our family headed out to Hermit’s Rest Road, where we took in spectacular views of a Monet-like sunset over the craggy canyon cliffs. Indeed, some of the best things in life are free!

So-Long…for Now

Sitting at the Phoenix airport, we vowed to return someday soon for another family adventure. After all, memories made together last a lifetime. My husband and I imagine our children, long after we’re gone, talking about our wonderful family trips to Arizona’s red rock country. Wouldn’t that be grand?

There’s something special about grilling in the yard with family and friends, especially this time of year. The outdoor games, the beverages, and a pile of food make for a great afternoon! This menu is focused on one of my favorite grilled chicken thigh recipes, with a cold cucumber side and flavorful, fruity granita to cool off with. Effortless and effective for any occasion.

HONEY CHIPOTLE

LIME GRILLED CHICKEN THIGHS

2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs

1/4 cup lime juice

1/2 cup agave

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup chopped cilantro

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper lime wedges cilantro

In a medium bowl, make the marinade by stirring together lime juice, agave, soy sauce, olive oil, cilantro, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Reserve about a quarter cup of the marinade. In a large zip-top bag, combine the chicken thighs with the rest of the marinade, seal, and shake until coated. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least three hours, and preferably overnight.

When ready to cook, get the grill hot and season with oil to prevent food from sticking. Grill skin side down until crispy and brown, approximately 6 minutes. Turn and cook on the other side until cooked through, approximately 5 minutes. Baste occasionally with reserved marinade as the thighs cook on both sides. Serve immediately.

THE LONGER YOU MARINATE THE CHICKEN THIGHS, THE JUICIER AND MORE FLAVORFUL THEY WILL TASTE. INVEST THE TIME AND LET THEM MARINATE OVERNIGHT.

TEX MEX TOMATO CUCUMBER CORN SALAD

2 Large tomatoes, seeded and diced 1/2 English cucumber, peeled and diced

1/2 cup corn kernels

1 serrano pepper, diced 1/4 cup chopped cilantro

2 tablespoons rice vinegar

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1/4 cup queso fresco

Salt and pepper to taste

In a large bowl, whisk together salt, pepper, cilantro, vinegar, chili powder, lime juice, and olive oil. Add tomatoes, cucumber, corn, and serrano pepper. Toss to combine and coat. Top with queso fresco.

PREP THE SAUCE AND VEGGIES SEPARATELY THE NIGHT BEFORE! MIX TOGETHER AND TOP WITH CHEESE WHEN GUESTS ARRIVE.

WATERMELON MINT GRANITA

1/2 cup water

5 cups seedless watermelon, chopped and frozen

1 1/4 cup frozen strawberries

3/4 cup agave

1/4 cup mint leaves

2 tablespoons lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Purée until smooth. Store in a plastic container or loaf pan in the freezer for at least 4 to 5 hours. Once frozen, use a fork to scrape the top, creating the granita texture (very similar to shaved ice!). Serve in small bowls with mint garnish.

LIGHT SAUCES PACKED WITH FLAVOR

With summer in full swing, the last thing you’ll feel like eating is a heavy, calorie-laden sauce full of cream and butter. Instead, make use of the bounty of fresh herbs and produce available at your local farmers market or food store to create versatile, health-conscious sauces that add a big burst of flavor to meats and veggies. Your palette, and your heart, will thank you!

ARGENTINIAN CHIMICHURRI

South Americans love to dip grilled meats in chimichurri, which has an herbal yet piquant taste. Spread it on steaks and hamburgers as a condiment, add it to chicken marinades, or use it with any food onto which you would squeeze a bit of lemon. Traditional chimichurri is based on fresh oregano. You can find tasty, authentic recipes online, or try a twist using baby leeks with the recipe below and serve it on thin fronds of grilled asparagus. Divine!

CHIMICHURRI WITH LEEKS

• 3 to 4 tablespoons minced baby leeks

• 1 cup finely chopped parsley

• 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh oregano

• 1/3 to 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil (to taste), plus more for drizzling

• Pinch of sea salt and pepper

• 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Combine all ingredients except the vinegar and mix thoroughly. Stir in the vinegar and spoon sauce generously over lightly grilled spears of asparagus, grilled flank steak, and more. Top with a bit of crumbled feta and a few pitted olives for even more pizazz.

VENEZUELAN GUASACACA

SAUCE

This simple but astoundingly tasty sauce includes avocado, fresh parsley and coriander, bell pepper, onion, garlic, salt, olive oil, and vinegar. Venezuelans use it on grilled meats and for dipping. Toss the ingredients into a food processor and blend until you get the consistency you desire.

LEMONY MINT AND PARSLEY PESTO WITH HAZELNUTS

Pesto, which originated in Italy, traditionally uses basil as the main leafy ingredient, and includes Parmesan cheese. Next time you decide to put some together, try punching it up with some mint, parsley, and hazelnuts—a heavenly concoction that pairs well with grilled lamb chops and chicken. CHICKPEA, ORANGE, AND TAHINI DRESSING

This isn’t a green sauce, but it’s so delicious and nutritious we just had to include it. Instead of drowning your salad in ranch or blue cheese dressing, try a creamy, velvety alternative. Nothing beats a cool drink on a hot summer day—but how about keeping things fresh by kicking back with a classic cocktail instead of the usual suspects?

LIMONCELLO COLLINS

This lemonade-ish drink is great to make for a summer party. Just whip up a pitcher in advance and top each glass, after pouring, with a splash of club soda. The recipe below is for one drink.

• 2 ounces limoncello

• 1 1/2 ounces quality gin, such as Beefeater 24

• 2 ounces fresh lemon juice

• 2 ounces club soda

Combine the limoncello (an Italian lemon liqueur), gin, and lemon juice into a mixing glass. Press three very thin lemon slices against the side of a Collins glass then add ice. Pour the limoncello mixture from the mixing glass over the ice. Top with the club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig.

SOUTHERN-STYLE PRIMM’S CUP

Primm’s liqueur, an English favorite, makes a Primm’s Cup, but this recipe adds some Southern sass and oomph with bourbon whiskey.

• 1/2 cup Pimm’s No. 1 liqueur

• 1/4 cup quality bourbon whisky, such as Maker’s Mark

• 1 orange, sliced and quartered (use cara cara or blood orange for more color)

• 1/3 English cucumber, julienned

• 1/2 red apple, cut into thin slices

• 3/4 cup ginger ale

• 1/3 cup fresh mint leaves

Mix the Pimm’s, whiskey, orange and apple slices, and a few cucumber slices in a large pitcher. Stir in some of the mint leaves. Let chill for about 10

minutes. Add in the ginger ale, and pour into 2 icefilled glasses. Add a few sprigs of fresh mint and an extra cucumber slice for garnish.

WATERMELON GIN RICKEY

The Gin Rickey was invented in a Washington D.C. bar during a brutal heat wave in the 1890s— probably close to an average summer day in Texas! Watermelon adds complexity to the flavor and a nice touch of color to this classic drink.

• Coriander seeds

• 2 ounces quality gin, such as Bombay Sapphire

• 2 ounces fresh watermelon juice

• 1/2 ounces fresh squeezed lime juice (about 1 lime)

• Club soda to top up

Put the coriander seeds at the bottom of a cocktail shaker and crush lightly. Add the gin, lime juice, and 1/4 cup of the watermelon juice. Add ice and shake. Pour over fresh ice and top up the glass with club soda. Garnish with mint and a watermelon spear.

SMASHED CHERRY MOSCOW MULE

With only a few ingredients, this drink may be destined to become your go-to summer party beverage. Serve in a copper mug, of course!

• 2 ounces vodka

• 4 fresh cherries

• ginger beer

• fresh lime juice

Muddle four cherries (halved, seeds removed) in the bottom of your cup along with the juice of half a lime. Add vodka, ice, and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a lime slice and a fresh cherry.

Ashia Reynolds’ optimism as a member of the Navy Reserves

Ashia Reynolds has a smile that could charm a raincloud away, and a purposefully upbeat attitude that always looks at the bright side of things. Originally from Houston, Texas, she now lives in Japan. That’s because Ashia is in the Navy Reserves. Her husband is also in the Navy, as an active duty sailor stationed on a ship in Japan.

Ashia initially joined the Reserves with the intention of transitioning into full time active duty as an officer, but her plans changed when she met her husband and got married. Still, she’s glad that she joined. “It’s done great things for me, just as a person, character-wise,” she says. “It builds a lot of character. And I think it’s a good way to kind of figure out who you are and what you’re capable of.”

While Ashia chooses to focus on how her experience in the Navy has helped her grow as a person, she

doesn’t see it with rose-tinted glasses. After all, you can’t build character without facing challenges, and there are plenty of those in military life.

“Once you get out into the Fleet, you might be tasked with certain things, and—you don’t even know what it is. So, you know, then you kind of find out, are you a resourceful person? Do you buckle under pressure? How much can you take, how do you work through your problems?”

And if there’s one thing that Ashia wishes that people outside the military understood, it’s that serving in the military is rewarding, but not easy.

“Some people do go into the military because it’s a paycheck for them,” she admits. “But a lot of people go because they really do want to serve their country. They want to do something they feel will make a difference.”

“We don’t get to see family or friends the way other people do.” Ashia says. Like most sailors, she speaks matterof-factly about this reality of military life, but isn’t callous to it. “It’s a big deal, and it’s all voluntary. Nobody has to go. But also understand that these men and women, at any given moment in time, will go and fight for you. Put that into perspective—they don’t have to! But they do. We do.”

On the flip side, Ashia has words of encouragement for those considering joining the military, or those who only joined recently. “Even when it gets hard, even when it gets tough—and it is going to get hard, and it is going to be tough—remember why you’re there. Don’t let yourself get beat down by the day to day. Remember why you signed up, remember why you came, and why you’re here,” she concludes.

Those are words of wisdom, I think, that all Americans can take to heart.
