CHANGING THE HEALTHCARE GAME FOREVER
Looking for a good night’s sleep?

Do you suffer from chronic snoring or sleep apnea?
If the thought of wearing a breathing mask while you sleep doesn’t appeal to you, here’s some good news. Many people with sleep apnea can benefit from a more subtle form of treatment: an oral appliance that is made just for you. This lightweight device fits over the teeth and slightly repositions the jaw to unblock the airway. It’s a more comfortable and less noticeable way to get a good night’s sleep—and it may be right for you!

letter from the publisher

“IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS: FOR THIS IS GOD’S WILL FOR YOU IN CHRIST JESUS.”
1 THESSALONIANS 5:18
I love the winter months. Don’t you? The smells of stew cooking, turkey baking, and hot cocoa beckoning. I especially love trips to the ranch with our grand girls, gigantic fire pits, and making s’mores together.
But most of all, I love the tradition of using the month of November to reflect on blessings and thanksgiving. I’ve been blessed with five children, five grandchildren, amazing parents and a Godly husband to share my life. I live in God’s country surrounded by friends and family who are precious to me. And I have a career I love with clients and colleagues who make my life better, every day. My cup truly runneth over.
As the psalmist wrote, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1) I hope you’ll join me this month—and always—in thanking God for the countless blessings He’s given us.

letters from OUR MAYORS

mayor DAVID COOK MANSFIELD
The City’s website has a whole new look, with a lot of new ways to stay connected to what’s happening and take care of City business online.
City staff spent the last year working on the redesign of mansfieldtexas.gov, tapping government website company CivicPlus to assist with the new design and implement more more user friendly features and expand the city’s digital communications effort.
There’s a great tool called Notify Me where residents can tailor their online experience and get email, phone or text messages when City calendars are updated, when news stories are posted and when online newsletters are produced.
There is also a new emergency alert system offering more efficiency, diversity and user control than the
previous system. Code Red is no longer active in Mansfield. So you will need to go online to https://www.mansfieldtexas.gov/312/Mansfield-Emergency-Alert-System and register an account on the new system. Once registered then select the group messages you want to receive and how you want to receive them.
We believe the new website offers our residents a better online experience. We’re excited for you to try it out.
mayor RON JENSEN GRAND PRAIRIE
As we gather family and friends for Thanksgiving, may I share what I’m thankful for as Mayor of this great city:
1. I get to be Mayor where I grew up, a city of friendly people with a passion for family, philanthropy and fun.
2. Grand Prairie continues to add retail, restaurant and commercial development, including the recently approved Epic East Retail Center to begin construction in early 2020, with stores opening late 2020.
3. Main Event Entertainment Center opens early 2020 bringing family fun and more reasons to visit Grand Prairie.
4. Our new City Hall will open in December, linking
the existing City Hall and Development into one unit making it easier for customers to find us and gain access to city services.
5. My Mayor’s Mentors program is matching mentors with kids on the Big Brothers Big Sister wait list, creating dynamic and positive relationships that will benefit our future.
6. Our City Council and management team are among the best in the nation, as evidenced by a host of national awards for Parks, Libraries, Police, Fire and more.
Live Life Grand,
Don’t look now, Arlington, but fall is upon us. It’s the time of year to stop and reflect on all our blessings. Here in The American Dream City our cup runneth over. And there’s no doubt one of the main things that make this a place like no other is the people who call Arlington home. Dr. Moody Alexander is one of them. A popular local orthodontist, Dr. Alexander helped found the non-profit, EthiopiaSmile in 2010. Since then, the group has provided free dental care to several hundred Ethiopians each year, primarily orphans, widows, the elderly, and those with dental infections. This in a country of 80 million people with fewer than 100 trained dentists.
During that time, Dr. Alexander and his wife, Emily, have adopted three children from Ethiopia, making them parents of seven amazing children who no doubt will follow the example of love and selflessness their parents
have laid out for them. This year, the American Board of Orthodontics honored Dr. Alexander with their 2019 Humanitarian Award at their Excellence in Orthodontics Luncheon and Awards Ceremony.
“The American dream to me is a community of faith, love, and kindness, and a community that wants to better each other and help each other on the journey,” Dr. Alexander said. During this month of Thanksgiving, we want to say thank you, Dr. Alexander, for helping make Arlington, Texas a better place to live, work, play, and serve.

COMING TO THEATERS
NOVEMBER 22 // A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
TOM HANKS, MATTHEW RHYS DIR. MARIELLE HELLER (CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?)

It’s hard to imagine anyone but America’s most likable working actor portraying the broadly loved Fred (Mister) Rogers, and Hanks takes on the role in a film based on once-cynical journalist Tom Junod’s profile of Rogers, originally published in Esquire in 1998. Widely praised upon its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the biopic looks to be a powerful family feature just in time for the holidays.
NOVEMBER 16, 1990 // HOME ALONE
MACAULAY CULKIN, JOE PESCI // DIR. CHRIS COLUMBUS (HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE)
’Tis the season to start breaking out the Christmas movies, and you could do worse than such a modern American classic as the venerable and often quoted Home Alone, which was actually so popular upon release that it remained number one in theaters until February of the following year and stayed in the top ten until June of 1991. Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal.
THIS MONTH IN MOVIE HISTORY OUR BOOK PICK
NOEL STREET BY RICHARD PAUL EVANS
In this new offering from “the king of Christmas fiction” (The New York Times), #1 bestselling author Richard Paul Evans shares a story of heart, loyalty, and hope as he explores the deeper meaning of the holiday season and asks what it truly means to love and forgive.

HOLIDAY IN THE PARK AT SIX FLAGS
IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME of the year and it’s downright magical at Six Flags Over Texas’ Holiday in the Park. During select dates between November 23rd and December 31st, the park will come alive with holiday cheer, including millions of twinkling, colored lights each night. Families will make enchanting holiday memories together enjoying the park’s festive LED light show, a slide down the snow-sledding hill, and warming fire pits for toasting s’mores.
Take a stroll together through the Merry Marketplace. Visit Santa’s Outpost and meet the Jolly Old Elf himself—as well as Mrs. Claus and the elves.
Cavort with furry friends at Johnson’s Creek Critter Corral, enjoy seasonal performances, family caroling, a 60-foot Christmas tree—plus rides, of course—and interactive activities to help craft holiday memories your family will never forget.

LARGER THAN LIFE
ENERGY TYCOON T. BOONE PICKENS SHARES POSTHUMOUS WISE WORDS
UPON HIS PASSING IN SEPTEMBER , a message from long-time Dallas resident T. Boone Pickens was posted to his social media pages and website. We’ve decided to let his anecdotes speak for themselves by excerpting a few small parts of his note here. You can read the full message at BoonePickens.com.

If you are reading this, I have passed on from this world— not as big a deal for you as it was for me.
In my final months, I came to the sad reality that my life really did have a fourth quarter and the clock really would run out on me. I took the time to convey some thoughts that reflect back on my rich and full life.
I’ve long recognized the power of effective communication. That’s why in my later years I began to reflect on the many life lessons I learned along the way, and shared them with all who would listen.
Fortunately, I found the young have a thirst for this message. Many times over the years, I was fortunate enough to speak at student commencement ceremonies, and that gave me the chance to look out into a sea of the future and share some of these thoughts with young minds. My favorite of these speeches included my grandchildren in the audience.
What I would tell them was this Depression-era baby from tiny Holdenville, Oklahoma — that wide expanse where the pavement ends, the West begins, and the Rock Island crosses the Frisco — lived a pretty good life.
In those speeches, I’d always offer these future leaders a deal: I would trade them my wealth and success, my 68,000-acre ranch and private jet, in exchange for their seat in the audience. That way, I told them, I’d get the opportunity to start over, experience every opportunity America has to offer. It’s your shot now.
Over the years, my staff got used to hearing me in a meeting or on the phone asking, “Whaddya got?” That’s probably what my Maker is asking me about now.
Here’s my best answer. I left an undying love for America, and the hope it presents for all. I left a passion for entrepreneurship, and the promise it sustains. I left the belief that future generations can and will do better than my own. Thank you. It’s time we all move on.

IT’S TIME FOR CONCIERGE CARE
Resurgence Wellness was the brainchild of Chris Chappell. Not one to toot his own horn, Chris just wanted to fi nd a more patient-centered healthcare model, one where the patient was calling the shots and the goal was not “sick care” but wellness equality. It was an idea whose time had come, and he now fi nds himself flying all over the country to give his patients the care they need and deserve. Resurgence Wellness caters to the patient looking for better overall health, more time with their primary care provider and no waiting or rushed appointments. House calls and office calls are just the beginning.
HOLISTIC CARE
Modern medicine has become very specialized— with specialists for each part of the body who aren’t necessarily communicating with one another. Resurgence Wellness medical professionals looks at each patient as a whole—physically, environmentally, spiritually, nutritionally, emotionally, socially, and in other ways and considers how the different systems of the body relate to one another. They consider (for instance) the way an issue with the heart relates to a hormone imbalance or how stress may be affecting the digestive system. Although they believe modern pharmaceuticals can be a wonderful thing, they consider them as a last resort, after all conservative treatment options have been exhausted.
COOLSCULPTING
Winter is the perfect time to work on getting your body ready for Summer 2020. Resurgence Wellness patients are doing just that with the help of next-generation body sculpting technology. CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared laser that non-invasively freezes away fat. Backed by more than ten years of research at Harvard University, CoolSculpting can eliminate areas of stubborn body fat from the abdomen, fl anks, and thighs without surgery, often removing 20-37% of fat cells from the targeted area permanently. CoolSculpting is relatively painless and patients can resume their daily activities immediately.
HAIR RESTORATION
Thinning hair is embarrassing enough for a man. But did you know that thirty percent of women over age 30 suffer from temporary or permanent loss of the hair on the head and/or eyebrows. In the past, women have tried topical lotions, medication, and traditional hair transplants with varying success.

Resurgence Wellness is seeing astounding results in men and women who are struggling with hair loss. With using a unique combination of PRP, exosomes, biotin medication and other elements. Resurgence Wellness is able to individualize your treatment plan.
JOIN THE RW TEAM
Not sure where to start? Resurgence Wellness offers a variety of health tests including Dexa Scan, 3D-Fit, blood testing, genetic testing, nutrient testing, and allergy testing to give you a clearer idea what your body needs and where to begin your journey to wellness. one heartbeat AWAY
IF YOU HAD JUST MINUTES TO LIVE, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD GO WHEN YOU DIED?
BY KAREN WILLIAMSON

Sooner or later, we are all faced with the reality that we don’t live forever here on Earth. My dad faced it in 2014. My mom is a Christian and took us to church at an early age. My dad—a great man, husband, and father—wasn’t. He was an engineer at NASA who was raised on a family farm in Yukon, Oklahoma. I came to know the Lord at the age of 12 and my dad made a rare appearance at church to come to my baptism. It meant the world to me. My mom told me that as they began singing hymns, he said, “I have no idea what any of this means.” Have you ever felt that way?
There were many people who touched my dad’s life, some who were good Christians— and others who claimed they were but didn’t act that way and really turned my dad against becoming one. My dad worked hard, saved his money, and could fix just about anything. When my parents moved to Rockwall and my mom began attending church at the First Baptist Church of Rockwall, Pastor Steve Swofford got to know my dad and took an interest in his workshop. Those little connections are so important. My dad respected Pastor Swofford, but still didn’t think that knowing or believing in God would ever be relevant to his own life.
In the early months of 2014, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. It was in his kidney, his spine, and pelvis. We watched my dad try to tackle this problem with the same methodical precision as he would anything he needed to fix. But his cancer couldn’t be fixed. When you realize you are at the end of your rope, you will contemplate, if you never have before, what will happen to you when you die, heaven and hell. We will all live in eternity somewhere. My dad asked to meet with Pastor Steve and talk about it.
Something in our conscience tells us there must be a Creator. If a tornado ripped through a barn and whirled up all the metal, would we expect after the tornado to see a perfectly made barn and tractor, with all the intricate details allowing the tractor to run and the barn to stand? Many assume that our intricate bodies, our intricate world, came about because of a big bang and so order came from chaos. But there was a designer for Mount Rushmore, a designer for the building you work in, and a designer for your teeth and jaw.
its usual molar spot. Is that not amazing? I can’t study things like that and not believe there is a Creator.
So, on a magnificent day in July, my dad told Pastor Steve that he had always tried to live a good life. But he had had some bad thoughts. He had told some little lies. He had sinned— which is enough to keep us from a holy and perfect God who loves us so much He had his own, His one and only Son, given as the sacrifice for our sins so we could be with Him forever. My dad realized that day what sin was in its simplest form. My dad realized that day who God was. My dad realized that day that he owed a debt he couldn’t pay, just as none of us can. We can’t work enough, serve enough, live long enough, pray enough, teach enough, be kind enough to ever cancel that debt to God.
Thankfully, God made it easy. He said, “here is my Son.” Jesus paid our debt. And we all have equal access to Jesus Christ as our savior. He came for all of us. My dad prayed to God that day, asking Him to forgive him for his sin, accepting Jesus as the debt-payer. My dad realized he couldn’t save himself— but God provided his Savior. At the age of 78, after so many people prayed for my dad, he was saved.
Three weeks later, my dad went to be with His Lord in peace. And what a difference that makes. My dad was one heartbeat away, as we all are, and now for all of eternity he will enjoy being in the presence of the One who made him, the One who made my dad’s engineering brain and his big heart of love for his wife, kids, grandkids—the one who now holds him forever.
At my dad’s funeral, my brother spoke about how nothing except cancer, the thing my dad couldn’t fix, could have ever brought him to a place of wanting to know what the minute after death would look like. I’m so overjoyed that Jesus Christ took my dad’s place and mine on that cross.

I’ve studied as a dentist for 25 years and still can’t believe how amazingly intricate just a single nerve system for a tooth is. Have you ever seen a molar shaped tooth in the front of someone’s mouth? The tooth buds for our permanent teeth are already forming by twenty weeks after conception—the enamel, the dentin, the nerves that allow us to feel ice cold Blue Bell ice cream. And at around age six, that molar emerges in the mouth in
If you are struggling with whether God is real, how this world came into being, or if you just want to know more about the Creator who made you, email the address below and we will be happy to send you the book One Heartbeat Away by Mark Cahill at no charge. Just remember to give us your address - your earthly address. Your heavenly address is just one heartbeat away.

Donna’s tag line, “When your family and finances matter, EXPERIENCE COUNTS” is more than just a slogan. Donna and her team possess the trial experience of litigating and winning and managing high conflict custody cases to ensure the best outcome for their clients, the children, and
the whole family unit. “As my firm grew and I needed to add attorneys. I carefully hand selected two of the most dynamic and passionate family law attorneys I know,” Donna said. “Desaray Muma joined me four years ago. She’s highly capable lawyer in the courtroom as well as being trained in the collaborative practice of family law. Together we grew the firm so rapidly that we needed to add a third attorney to the practice. We were lucky enough to join forces with, Michael A. Munoz, a senior litigation lawyer with almost 15 years of family law experience. We’ve also have an amazing staff of paralegals, legal assistants,

No matter what your situation, we understand what you are going through and will do everything in our power to ensure a positive outcome for you and your family.
office manager and a receptionist, to provide the best possible front and back office service to our clients as Arlington/ Mansfield’s full-service family law firm.”
Together they partner with clients who may be struggling with family law issues for the first time. “It’s our passion to share the wealth of experience we’ve adduced at FLFDJS in order to strategize and guide our clients through the family law system in order to maximize a favorable outcome—not only for the client we represent, but the whole family unit,” Donna said. “The ‘wins’ don’t mean much if the family is fractured and the children destroyed by being exposed to the wars fought in family court.”
Donna built her beautiful office, located conveniently in South Arlington to host private, collaborative meetings or mediations in a low-stress atmosphere.
The décor is fun and eclectic, filled with an art collection she carefully curated to provide the nicest possible environment to foster the kindest resolution of the ugliest of family law situations. “We even have a ‘divorce therapy’ dog on staff, as it’s a proven fact that animals, especially dogs, lower the heart rate and calm the senses,” Donna said. “Baxter is an integral part of our intentional commitment to the resolution of family law matters in the most therapeutic setting possible at The Family Law Firm of Donna J. Smiedt, PLLC.”
Donna herself graduated high school at age 15, a year after she moved to the United States from South Africa. By age 19, she had earned her undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and went on to be one of the Southern Methodist University School of Law’s youngest graduates in history, finishing her law degree at only 22.
Since then, she’s worked passionately to improve the lives of her clients as they move through troubled times. She credits her passion to the fact that she fully believes in the importance of the work she does and is proud to be able to offer her clients a safe and understanding system of support as well as effective legal solutions.
It’s no wonder Donna has been named Family Law Attorney of the Year in Arlington and was voted Top Family Law Attorney in Fort Worth by her peers again this year. “Our family law center exists to provide families with a variety of options, at one of the most difficult times of their lives, when emotions run high,” Donna said. “We are the dispassionate voice of advice, tempered with empathy for their stressful situation, guiding them from the dark to the light in their divorce or custody experience.”

AN OPEN BOOK
Giving books as gifts can let the reader learn something about themselves—and about you.
ne thing I love almost as much as reading (and rereading) the perfect book is gifting the right tome to just the right recipient. I keep a notebook in my purse all year long for jotting down book gift ideas as I hear good things. When the holiday season rolls around, I consult my notes—Weird Parenting Wins for Jenn, The Overstory for Wayne, Brain on Fire for April, Educated for Neesy. I take a deep breath and place my biggest book order of the year, mentally crossing my fingers in hopes that each recipient will love the book that brought them to mind. Here are some ideas for finding the perfect book to give each person on your list.
Do Some Sleuthing
Scrutinize your friends’ bookshelves. Notice what they like to read then search for something new in that genre. Consider topics that pop up in their conversations and see what’s being written on them.
Pay Attention
What book last sent them over the moon? What movie did they watch multiple times? That tells you what genre or tone or style they enjoy. My sister, Gail, loves gritty true-life stories, so I’m getting her JELL-O Girls, about the not-so-sweet lives of the Rowbottom family, heir to the JELL-O fortune.
Consult Someone with Similar Interests
Is your favorite uncle a World War II buff or a science nerd? Ask someone who reads about those same topics what they’ve read and loved this year. My friend Ron and my brother Duff are both NASA nerds. For Duff’s Christmas book this year, Ron recommended Hidden Figures, about the women who calculated by hand the complex equations that allowed our astronauts to walk on the moon in a pre-computer era.
Make Friends with your Indie Book Seller
If there’s anybody who’s excited—and I mean really excited—about books, it’s the owner of your local independent bookstore. Tell them who you’re shopping for and where their interests lie. My walking partner loves romance novels—I don’t. The bookstore owner recommended a beautifully illustrated copy of Breakfast at Tiffany’s that Kathy will love.
Explain Your Choice
It’s always nice to include a note telling the recipient why this book reminded them of you. Write it on a pretty bookmark or inside a card and insert it inside the book. If it’s a book you’ve read and enjoyed, consider placing sticky notes throughout the pages for them to find when they read your favorite segments.

DISPEL THE HEAT OF STRESS WITH RELAXATION TECHNIQUES TO ENTER THE CHILL ZONE
BY SAMANTHA GLUCK
Your neck and back are tight. Your head hurts— you’re wound up tighter than a piano wire. No more denial, no more pretending you’re not stressed out.
It’s time to get serious about stress management. Working constantly and feverishly running errands at the end of the day robs you of your best life. But by learning to relax you will cultivate a deeper sense of self awareness and your decisions will arise with clarity and confidence.

Tips for getting into the “chill zone”
Consider committing just 15 minutes to quiet and solitude each day. Carving out a small chunk of time around mid-day can initiate a powerful and positive change in your life. It may seem difficult at first, and you may find the “chill zone” seems out of reach, but you can get there.
PREPARE A PHYSICAL SPACE. Whether you’re at the office or home, map out a space that invites calm and relaxation. For example, don’t sit in your cubicle right in front of the stack of paperwork you’ve been putting off for way too long. Turn your seat to face a blank wall or a soothing picture, or if you’ve got a lunch break, drive to a local park.
BREATHE. Start by taking slow, shallow breaths rather than deep, sharp ones. This rhythmic breathing will help calm stress and pop-up thoughts that try to steal the inner peace you deserve.
PREPARE YOUR MENTAL SPACE. When you begin your planned relaxation time, you probably won’t be ready immediately. Unwelcome thoughts and concerns will continue to swirl around in your mind. After all, you’ve allowed these peace thieves to rule your world for a long while. Don’t attempt to push the thoughts down. Simply notice them and gently pull yourself out of their grasp. This takes practice. It will get easier.
LEARN ABOUT THE MEANING OF SILENCE. During this quiet period, you’ll begin to hear sounds you didn’t notice before—ticking clocks, a car starting, dogs barking in the distance, the hum of an air conditioner. As you move further into the silence, you’ll become more keenly aware of these and other peripheral sounds. You see, silence isn’t an absence of sound. Rather, it’s an elevated form of listening and it’s quite powerful. These sounds ebb and flow within your awareness. They don’t diminish the silence; they are part of it.
TIME TO STRIKE A POSE. Whether you’re in business attire, or in your comfy jeans at home, yoga can greatly assist with relaxation. Start with a crescent moon pose, move into a standing seal pose or desk upward dog, and on to eagle arms (you can find diagrams of these poses easily online). This will likely wreak havoc on your inner silence at first, but keep practicing and you will become master of the 15 minute chill.
It’s the Little Things
Let’s face it—as a society, we’re kind of uptight.
Michelle Newman, PhD, director of the Laboratory for Anxiety and Mood Pathology, says people get into a habit of carrying around more tension and anxiety than they should. She emphasizes regular relaxation to keep anxiety under control and encourages a few simple techniques.
T AKE A BREAK FROM SMART DEVICES. Turn off your electronic devices and put them in a drawer for at least an hour a day.
FIND THE HUMOR. Try to find some humorous angle to whatever comes at you during the day. This giggle therapy can act as an effective tool for diminishing anxiety.
MOVE. You’ve heard it before— take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to your appointments, park further away. Moving your body is a good idea and helps to clear your head between scheduled relaxation times.
Let go of the hustle for just a little bit and free your mind.

not to WORRY
WHILE ANXIETY CAN CAUSE YOU TO WORRY YOURSELF SICK, UNDERSTANDING IT IS THE FIRST STEP TO CONFRONTING IT
BY DAVID BUICE

Worry is a normal part of our lives. And there are times when it can even be helpful. Ideally and up to a point, worrying about things like finances or family relationships can cause us to think seriously about them, and prod us to take appropriate steps to deal with them. It’s possible, however, for our worries to become excessive, irrational, and uncontrollable, stealing much of the joy of our relationships, everyday activities, and accomplishments.

Lauren Marie Medean
HOW TO confront anxiety
By all means, seek professional medical help if your anxiety is seriously interfering with your work and personal or family relationships, or if it continues for several months.
ATTEMPT COGNITIVE DISTANCING.
With anxious thoughts, your mind is trying to protect you by predicting what could happen, but that doesn’t mean it will happen. Ask yourself if anything good could happen instead, and which is more likely based on past experiences and other information you may have.
DECIDE IF A THOUGHT IS HELPFUL.
Imagine you’re thinking of applying for a job, but only one person out of 50 applicants will get that position. That’s true, but if you concentrate on that thought, you may become demotivated and not even apply. Try instead to focus on thoughts that are helpful— like why you would be an outstanding applicant—and let the rest go.
MOVE!
It’s amazing how much better you can feel after a morning’s 30-minute burst of exercise. Find some form of motion you enjoy or at least tolerate, do it 3-5 times a week, shed that anxiety, and face the coming day.
OTHER CONCERNS
Suffering from this kind of worry for six months or longer is referred to as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Statistics reported by the National Institute of Mental Health indicate an estimated 5.7 percent of adults experience GAD sometime in their lifetime. It runs higher among females (3.4 percent) than males (1.9 percent), but according to Mayo Clinic specialists, there are particular factors that might increase your risk of developing GAD.
• Personality. A person having a timid or negative temperament or one who avoids anything dangerous may be more prone.
• Genetics. Anxiety disorders can run in families.
• Experiences. These include a history of significant life changes or traumatic experiences during childhood.
• Drugs or alcohol. Misuse and withdrawal can cause or worsen anxiety.
SYMPTOMS
Physical signs and symptoms of GAD include:
• Fatigue
• Trouble falling or staying asleep
• Nervousness or being easily startled
• Nausea or irritable bowel syndrome
• Sweating, trembling, feeling twitchy
• Irritability
With a little focus, much anxiety can be understood and dealt with. But if you’re having trouble, there’s no need to endure prolonged suffering—seek assistance from a qualified medical professional.

ANY TIME’S A GOOD ONE TO DECOMPRESS AT AN AREA OASIS
If you think spending some time at a spa, med spa, or massage studio is unnecessarily self-indulgent, then think again. Discovering the undeniable health benefits associated with setting aside a day for rest and relaxation is more or less essential in our busy world.
A day (or even an hour) at a spa allows you to carve out some me time. It’s like a mini vacation. Afterwards, you can enjoy the benefits of a clear mind, increased productivity, and better sleep.
END YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH TOXINS
Body treatments can remove a layer of dead skin cells, dirt, and toxins, leaving you with a healthy looking glow. The same treatments stimulate the lymphatic system, which carries away the body’s waste products to support weight loss.
SET THE TONE
If you want an instant boost, head to a local med spa that offers body contouring treatments. There are a variety of non-surgical body contouring methods available, which can result in the reduced appearance of cellulite by toning and firming those areas that diet and exercise haven’t helped.
A NEW VEIN OF THOUGHT
Pesky spider veins have the potential to turn into varicose veins, which can cause pain, itching, swelling, and aches. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait until a cosmetic concern turns into a health concern to take action. Contact some local pros to learn how some simple injections can diminish the
appearance of spider veins. Leg massages are also a fabulous way to help prevent varicose veins.
ON TOP OF THE WORLD
Massage releases serotonin and dopamine. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with depression, and low dopamine means difficulty focusing and a lack of motivation. If you need any more encouragement to book a massage, you should know that studies have linked higher serotonin levels to decreased quarrelsome behavior, and increased dopamine levels to a greater feeling of satisfaction and energy. Some studies have indicated that massage can increase both by as much as 30 percent.
side notes ABOUT MED SPAS
If you are regretting a lifetime of unprotected sun exposure, a variety of laser treatments are available to leave you with younger-looking, smoother skin. A med spa is also the perfect place to go if you’re tired of looking tired. A wide array of fillers are available to help with fine lines and wrinkles. You might want to try out a resurfacing facial, which can exfoliate damaged skin cells, protect your skin, and stimulate collagen and elastin production.
DIZZINESS? VERTIGO? LOSS OF BALANCE?
Vestibular Testing may be right for you.

Nearly 36% of adults over the age of 40 suffer from chronic dizziness, vertigo or loss of balance. Inner ear dysfunction is a leading cause of dizziness and vertigo.
Do you feel dizzy whenever you turn your head in a particular direction? Does the dizziness improve after a few seconds or does it linger for longer periods?
Do you get dizzy whenever you undergo pressure changes?
Do you have tinnitus or noises in one or both of your ears?
Do you have sensation of fullness/pressure in one or both ears?
If you answered "yes" to one or more of these questions, a vestibular evaluation is in order.

A HOLIDAY SKINCARE ROUTINE THAT’LL LEAVE YOU WITH THE SCENT OF THE SEASON BY AUDREY ASHE
ove over pumpkin, there’s a new fruit in town! (Did you know that pumpkins are a fruit? It’s true. But this article is not about pumpkins.) M

Coming down from the giddiness of pumpkin spice and apple cider doesn’t mean the seasonal food bender has to end. We know fresh fruits and vegetables have great health and beauty benefits, but it doesn’t have to stop in the kitchen. One particular fruit, the lowly cranberry, is a gem hidden in plain sight. Cranberries have long been touted for their health benefits both inside and out. The fruit of evergreen dwarf shrubs which are native to North America, cranberries bear antioxidants and other properties that help keep your skin looking and feeling radiant, smooth, and youthful.
Cranberries offer the perfect trifecta of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, along with enzymes that act as an exfoliant, which can tackle the dry outermost layer of skin and leave it silky smooth. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that they have many anti-aging properties as well. Rich in antioxidants essential for protecting skin against damaging environmental stressors and free radicals, the cranberry also has a high amount of vitamins A and C, which help stimulate collagen production.
CRANBERRY INFUSED PRODUCTS WE LOVE
Everyone deserves to relax during the holiday season, so help your skin kick off those metaphorical heels with this beautifying seasonal ingredient.
ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner is everything a toner should be—it tones and tightens the pores while locking in moisture, the cranberry extract giving an extra boost of moisture as well as antimicrobial properties.
Derma E’s Rosehip & Cranberry face oil is a godsend for those dry, cold nights. With the combined powers of rosehip, pumpkin, and cranberry seed oil, your skin will get a healthy dose of fatty acids and vitamins A and E.
Keihl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Mask is perfect for a quick pick-me-up. Once applied, the antioxidants of cranberry and turmeric energize the skin to help give it gorgeous holiday glow.
DELICIOUS DIY CRANBERRY BODY SCRUB
Your face isn’t the only part of your body that can reap the benefits of some cranberry therapy. For a revitalizing scrub sweet enough to eat, all you’ll need are a few simple ingredients from your kitchen.
• 1 cup fresh cranberries
• 1/8 cup melted coconut oil
• 1 cup raw sugar
Simply puree the cranberries to a paste in a blender, add the oil and sugar, and mix well. Voila! You now have a fresh, farm-tobathtub scrub that indulges your skin. Make sure to store it in the refrigerator when not in use to maintain maximum freshness.
When starting your orthodontic treatment, you’ll receive a free care package which consists of a Sonicare flex care platinum tooth brush, and extra cleaning packages to assist in ortho. Mention this offer when scheduling. Expires 11/30/19

SIMPLE IDEAS FOR DECORATING WITH LEAVES THIS FALL BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

Here in Texas, it’s harder to rely on the riot of fall colors enjoyed by some of the country. But if you know where to look—or what to plant—you’ll still find enough red, yellow, orange, and even purple leaves to get you stoked about the season. Take a stroll through your neighborhood or visit a local park to bring home some of your favorites, then have fun preserving their beauty any number of ways.

FALL WELCOME SIGN
Consider a new replacement for the traditional autumn wreath by painting the inside of an old tray with chalkboard paint. Add autumn branches, colorful leaves, and berries around the tray, write a welcoming message inside, and hang it on the front door to greet guests. (If you’d like to repurpose it, swap out the leaves for evergreen and holly come Christmastime.)
SIMPLE DECORATING
It doesn’t take Joanna Gaines to appreciate the prettiest and brightest leaves scattered in the center of your dinner table or strung along a railing interspersed with tiny white lights. The result is simply elegant.
LEAF PRESS WALL ART
Press your nicest leaves in a flower press or between the pages of a book. Then either mat and frame them or adhere them to card stock with spray mount from the craft store and arrange several on the wall.
NO-CARVE PUMPKIN
Just because jack-o’-lantern season is over doesn’t mean that pumpkins are no longer excellent fall décor. Try painting varying sizes of pumpkins white, then use Mod Podge to decorate them with
colorful fall leaves and greenery.
Display them with smaller pumpkins or gourds.
LEAF-STAMPED LINENS
Interesting shapes are more important than bright colors for this one. Paint one side of a leaf evenly with craft paint, position it on a cloth napkin or placemat paint side down, cover with a paper towel, and roll it with a rolling pin to leave the painted impression on the surface of your napkin or placemat.
MASON JAR CANDLE HOLDER
Don’t put away that Mod Podge yet! Use it to adhere (real or faux) fall leaves onto a Mason jar. You can use a sponge craft brush, but we found our fingers easier. Simply drop a candle inside, and you’ll have a lovely autumn votive.
AUTUMN LEAF GIFT TAGS
This is a great one if you give baked goods as holiday gifts, and it couldn’t be easier. Gather leaves with interesting and varying shapes. Cover them with paint in fall colors, and press onto large cardstock gift tags.

Leafless? Plant these trees now to enjoy fall color in the future.

soul RESET
DIGITAL DETOX GETAWAYS NEAR AND FAR BY ANNETTE BROOKS
After tracking what I did with the number of hours I spent connected and online for a single week, I found myself shocked at just how much time I’d been wasting on well, nothing much at all. So I promised myself I’d explore the world around me and connect with nature, friends, and family instead of spending so much time behind a computer screen or hunkered over my smart phone. I tried it on while vacationing on a tropical island last year and was pleased to discover my stress level went from full throttle to almost zero. It felt like I had reset my soul—which led me to search for more getaways that I thought might encourage me to unplug. After comparing options, I settled on three destinations, each with its own unique allure.
DUNTON HOT SPRINGS IN FALL
DUNTON BATHHOUSE DURING SUMMER DAY
OUTDOOR YOGA AT DUNTON

The Colorado Ghost Town
How could a ghost town be a great vacation destination? As it turns out, this once-forgotten 1800s mining town has been reborn as a rustic luxury resort called Dunton Hot Springs. As soon as I set eyes on the carefully renovated, hand-hewn log cabins nestled together in an alpine valley, tastefully decorated and featuring modern amenities, I felt a sense of peaceful community and blissful serenity wash over me.
The resort, a Relais & Chateau property, offers rustic charm effortlessly blended with creature comforts and outdoorsy options. Located just across the mountain from Telluride, the community rests on 200 acres but owns 1,600 surrounding acres which guests can enjoy. During the day, you can participate in extra activities such as horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and fly fishing. In the winter, enjoy snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and sleigh rides.
The price includes the room, three freshly prepared hot meals, and a daily cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres. The community boasts a saloon, dance hall, library, and chapel, as
well as a restored 19th century bath house and two more geothermal pools. Slow down and restore your body with a natural treatment and massage at their spa or refresh your spirit with an hour-long yoga or meditation session. At the end of the day, the threecourse dinner with sommelier-paired wines is a wonderful way to unwind before heading back to your cabin.
A Peruvian Seaside Village
Searching for a laid-back beach getaway without throngs of tourists, I found what I was looking for in the small seaside village of Máncora. Located on Peru’s northern Pacific coast, this strip of sandy beaches lies between a craggy desert and the open ocean. Accessible from Lima, Peru—getting there from Lima is an adventure in itself—Máncora’s year-round sunshine and waves make it a great spot to escape from it all.
Máncora is about simple pleasures—sun and sand, warm water and waves, food and drink. It’s the kind of place where, after soaking up some sun and being lulled by the surf, you can shake off your sandals and head downtown to the strip of open air restaurants and bars to
FOUR TIPS FOR Unplugging on Vacation
TELL FRIENDS, FAMILY, and neighbors that you will have limited connectivity and will only be checking in periodically. Give them your hotel information to contact you only in the event of an emergency.
SET SPECIFIC TIMES and time limits to check messages, and turn off all push notifications
PLAN YOUR TRIP in advance and notify coworkers as early as possible. Establish a chain of command in your absence.
LEAVE YOUR PHONE in your room, or at least turn off data and voice capabilities if you want to use your phone to take pictures.

eat ocean-fresh fish and seafood to your heart’s content before waking up your palate with Pisco Sour—a foamy Peruvian cocktail made from pisco (brandy), lime juice, simple syrup, and egg white. It’s prepared in a chilled cocktail shaker and topped with a dash of bitters. Try it. Seriously. You’ll be hooked.
Lodging ranges from upscale to basic. I stayed at Arennas Máncora, perched on the ocean just outside of town. Peaceful and quiet, it offers a tranquil, modern style and a beautiful private beach. With a day spa, a restaurant serving Peruvian inspired dishes, and a bar pouring to-die-for passionfruit mojitos, it’s easy to spend time just kicking back at the hotel. Your only decisions will be whether to experience a ceviche class taught by their executive chef, lounge by a lovely palm-shaded pool, relax with a spa treatment, or take a romantic walk along the beach at sunset.
Off the Grid in Belize
An adventurer at heart, I couldn’t resist Ian Anderson’s Cave Branch Adventure Company and Jungle Lodge. With tree house suites available and situated in the heart of Belize in a pristine rainforest, the Lodge offers luxury accommodations furnished with locally sourced marble and hardwood furniture, “elegantly integrated into the surrounding nature.” My tree house room was as incredible as I imaged it would be, replete with stunning natural views and jungle sounds, including those of nearby howler monkeys. I enjoyed the modern comforts of air conditioning and hot and cold running water up in my awesome tree house. Although Caves Branch Adventure Company and Jungle Lodge specializes in fun and exciting adventure expeditions, which do they warn are strenuous, guests are always catered to. Relax in the pool and hot tub and enjoy cheese tastings held in the botanical gardens. A soothing aromatherapy massage after cave tubing is a must!

THE POWER OF HOSTING OTHERS FOR DINNER

AT THE TABLE together
PEOPLE OFTEN ASK ME, “HOW AND WHY DO YOU DO IT?” I TELL THEM I HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE OTHERS FEEL WELCOMED, JUST AS OTHERS HAVE DONE FOR ME. THEY ARE REFERRING TO MY TENDENCY TO ROUTINELY WELCOME UPWARDS OF 20 PEOPLE FOR DINNER. THANKFULLY, I DON’T DO IT ALONE—AND EVERYONE DOES THEIR PART.
BY MONA CHAVEZ

OOUR FAMILY PROVIDES THE MAIN DISH, a couple of vegetable sides, and a few drinks. Everyone else is invited to bring an appetizer, a dessert, a side, or drinks. There is no rhythm to the flow. People arrive and set their contribution on the large kitchen island. Ahead of time, I set out napkins, disposable plates, cups, and cutlery. I make sure the bathrooms and main areas are relatively clean and inviting. We briefly say a thankful prayer before the meal, being mindful that not everyone may be of the same faith. Everyone casually helps themselves and we all have meaningful conversations while the children play outdoors. That’s a typical day of gathering at the Chavez Household.
I grew up in a family of seven plus an occasional dog. At the age of five, my father bought a home in Texas while he struggled with his professional life as a teacher. My mother, a stay-at-home mom, always made sure there were parties at our house even when finances were not looking good. However, the best events were at my grandparents’ home.
Once school was let out for the holidays or vacations, we would drive up from El Paso to Colorado, where my mom’s side of the family had immigrated in the 60s. With an extended family of over 65, those celebrations became a learning opportunity. I saw people interacting and being there for each other. Traditions and customs of Mexican heritage were passed down at these gatherings. My grandparents passed away a few years ago in their early 90s, but even in their late years, they still enjoyed having people visit and made ordinary days into celebrations.
I am so thankful that their fondness for congregation was passed down to me. Gathering with people over a meal has been the most meaningful and rewarding skill I have mastered as a citizen of this earth. Are you feeling disconnected? I encourage you to try it. Graciously welcome people to join you in this life. Who knows? One day we might end up at the same table sharing a meal.
My five simple rules of hosting
Be personal and share your life with others of different backgrounds
Don’t have any expectations
Be casual more often than formal
Solicit help ahead of time if needed

SEMI-HOMEMADE PUMPKIN
SPICE CAKE
WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
MAKES: 1 CAKE | TIME: ABOUT 1 HOUR
FOR THE CAKE: 1 box spice cake mix | 15 oz. can pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie mix | 3 eggs | 1 tsp. cinnamon | 1 tsp. vanilla
DIRECTIONS: PREHEAT oven to 350˚F. Spray a bundt pan, sheet pan, or two 8-inch round pans with nonstick spray. IN A LARGE mixing bowl, beat cake mix, pumpkin puree, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla. POUR into prepared pan(s). Cooking times will vary—follow box instructions. BAKE until toothpick comes out clean. Allow cake to cool slightly then invert on cooling rack to cool completely. PREPARE frosting while cake cools.
FOR THE FROSTING: ½ cup butter, room temperature | 8 oz. block of cream cheese, room temperature | 4 cups powdered sugar | 1 tsp. vanilla | 1 Tbsp. milk
DIRECTIONS: BEAT butter and cream cheese together. Mix in powdered sugar 1 cup at a time until combined into frosting. BEAT in vanilla and milk. Add in more milk, a teaspoon at a time, if frosting is too thick. ADD in more powdered sugar, ¼ cup at a time, if frosting is too thin. FROST cake generously with cream cheese icing and serve. (For a two-layer cake, double the frosting recipe.)

TIPS AND TRICKS: For a “semi-naked” cake, run the flat side of a butter knife or cake scraper around the outside of your frosted cake, removing excess frosting. Don’t worry about it being perfect, naked cakes are meant to be rustic!

DIRECTIONS: COMBINE sugar and water in medium saucepan and bring to boil. ADD cranberries and cinnamon and return to boil. STOVETOP
MACARONI & CHEESE
MAKES: ABOUT 6 SERVINGS | TIME: 30 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS: 12 oz. large elbow noodles | 1½ cups whole milk | 2 Tbsp. flour | 2 cups freshly grated extra sharp cheddar | 2 cups freshly grated medium sharp cheddar | 1 cup freshly grated Gruyere | 1 tsp. pepper | ¾ tsp. salt
DIRECTIONS: BRING 4 quarts of salted water to a boil in a large pot. Add pasta and cook according to package. Drain, rinse with cool water, return to pot and set aside. PLACE 1 cup of milk in a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat. While milk is warming, combine ½ cup of milk and 2 tablespoons of flour in a small bowl, making sure there are no lumps. ONCE MILK BEGINS TO STEAM, ADD in mixture from small bowl. Whisk continuously until the mixture thickens, about 2 minutes. Turn heat to low and begin to add in cheese one cup at a time, letting cheese melt into sauce before adding more. Once all cheese is combined, add salt and pepper. Adjust to taste. Pour cheese sauce over cooked noodles and combine.
TIPS AND TRICKS: This macaroni and cheese can easily be finished under the broiler as well. Turn broiler on high, spray any size baking pan with cooking spray, transfer desired amount of finished macaroni into baking pan, and cover with grated cheese of your choice. Broil for 2 to 4 minutes, checking continuously.
