publisher’s letter

“The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

– Psalm 113:3

September is a month of transition. The winter is ending but fall—at least in Texas—isn’t quite at our door. You might notice morning are getting cooler. Kids are back in school and in the stores, brown and orange fall decorations compete with the red, green, and gold of Christmas. Transition, indeed.

Maybe you’re in a time of transition in your life as well. If you are, remember Proverbs 16:9 tells us that, while we may plan our ways, it’s God who ultimately establishes our steps. Transition isn’t always easy, but it can serve as a reminder that our lives are not our own. They are the Lord’s. He will establish our paths and we can trust that, because God is good, He won’t lead us to a place that won’t ultimately lead to our good. And we can take comfort in the fact that God Himself never changes. (Mal. 3:6; Heb. 13:8)

Hebrews 1:3 tells us he upholds everything in the universe by the word of His power and that certainly includes His beloved children. God sustains every atom of His creation, and we can look to Him to sustain us through any difficulty of transition or change in our lives. Precious sister, your Father loves you so and wants only good for you in this time of transition — and always.

Arlington isn’t called e American Dream City for nothing. It has long been known as an excellent place to start a small business and watch it thrive. It’s in that spirit that the Arlington Economic Development Corporation (EDC) recently launched a series of industry-speci c small business cohorts, a free opportunity for Arlington-based small businesses to connect with experts through programming that directly addresses the challenges and opportunities of their individual sectors.

e industry-speci c small business cohort will focus on scaling, sustainability, and strategy re nement, giving businesses insight far beyond startup basics. e cohort is a way for the EDC to empower small businesses with the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to thrive, to provide Arlington businesses with unmatched support as

they scale and grow. American Dream City, indeed.

And here’s something else to celebrate. e City of Arlington recently paid o its obligation for AT&T Stadium debt a decade early, saving more than $150 million in interest and fees than was projected when voters approved the project. Arlington’s portion of the stadium debt, issued in 2005, was originally expected to be repaid in full over 30 years. But the city advanced through that debt in just 20 years, thanks to good revenue performance and re nancing and early redemptions. Now, that’s what I call a TOUCHDOWN!

Wineskin

IN THE SMOKE

HOPE FOR THE DRY & WEARY SOUL

“Though I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, I do not forget Your statutes.”

– Psalm 119:83

In ancient times they would store wine by hanging it in animal-skin pouches. But if one was left hanging for too long while the smoke from the fire was nearby, it would become dry, cracked, and brittle. Eventually the wineskin would become unusable. Do you ever feel like the Psalmist, like a “wineskin in the smoke” ? Maybe that’s where you’re at today – dry and weary in your soul, worn out and exhausted with the trials of this life. Are you all alone and trying to find your path in the midst of the darkness? Do you feel like you are losing the battle? Or maybe your wineskin has grown dry from your own self-inflicted smoke: You’ve been knocked down once again by that sin that you just can’t seem to conquer! Do you find yourself on the ground now, wondering “How will I get back up again?”

Please do not think that these feelings you are experiencing are foreign to God’s children. Oh no, you are in good company. Saints throughout the ages have gone through times of smoky wineskins: John Bunyan wrote of long seasons of spiritual darkness. Famous missionary David Brainerd filled his diary with entries of depression and despondency. Mother Teresa’s private writings revealed decades of inward darkness and feelings of abandonment by God. The great preacher Charles Spurgeon was a lifelong sufferer of severe depression, and even bedridden at times because of it. Martin Luther’s wineskins became so engulfed in the smoke that he once wrote, “For more than a week I was close to the gates of death and hell.” And may we not forget the description of our Lord Jesus Himself: “He was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” (Isaiah 53:3)

Perhaps, though, our most extensive view of a man who continually found himself being smothered by the smoke was the Psalmist himself. King David littered the psalms with lines of despair, loneliness, and abandonment by God. He cries out in the 22nd Psalm,

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest” (Psalm 22:1–2).

His soul is withered and brittle in the 63rd Psalm, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1).

The Psalms show us a man who was a wineskin continually immersed in the smoke; a man who pleaded with God from places of anxiety and fear; a man who cried for relief from the fumes of depression and darkness; a man who begged to be released from the vapors of his ailing physical body. A man blinded by the smoke of loneliness and despair. And perhaps most importantly, he pleads when his wineskin has grown dry and brittle from his own self-inflicted smoke, the entangling cords of his own sin.

These are the seasons and emotions not only of the Psalmist but of saints throughout the ages. Some may even say – and I would agree – that those who know God most deeply will find themselves entrenched in the thickest smoke. We must be careful when we pray dangerous prayers; when we dare to tell God, “Conform me to Your image”; when we dare to tell Him, “I want to go deeper, I want to know You more intimately.” Oh, He will answer those prayers if we really mean them. But make no mistake about it, the fire and the smoke are His scalpel of choice. Let us consider the words of a great theologian, Wolfgang Musculus:

“A bottle [wineskin] in the smoke has very little inflation, fatness, moisture, beauty. Thus God wastes away, debases, and empties his people, while he exercises them with tribulations and the disquiet of hoping and waiting. The glory and eagerness of the flesh must be emptied, that the Divine gifts may find room, and the remembrance of the commandments of God may be restrained, which cannot be well kept in bottles which are swollen, inflated, and filled.”

But what shall we do in those smoky seasons? How do we survive when the scalpel is upon us and the Surgeon has given no anesthetic? We can take comfort in the fact that the great Psalmist did not leave us without hope:

“Though I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, I do not forget Your statutes.”

His statutes… His word… His truth. It is the only answer He has for us. It is the only salve that brings moisture to a smoky wineskin. It is the only spring from which we can quench our thirsty hearts. There is only one Power that will extinguish those fumes we choke on: Christ Himself. And where do we find Him? In His Word – He is the Word! (John 1:1)

My friend, the farther along I go on this journey, I realize more and more the beautiful simplicity of the Christian life; All of our happiness, purpose, joy, peace, and contentment hinges upon one simple question: Will we dedicate our entire lives to what is written in that Book? Will we consume it every day? Will we study it? Will we meditate upon it? Will we memorize it? Will we believe it? Will we orient our entire world around it? This is the only solution there ever has been, and ever will be, to our smoky wineskins.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”

(Psalm 1:1–3)

Don’t worry — if your favorite semifinalist didn’t make the final cut, many concessionaires may still choose to include their creation at their stand as a new food item at this year’s Fair. The 2025 State Fair of Texas themed, “Texas Shines Bright,” will open on Friday, September 26, and runs through Sunday, October 19, 2025. Head over to BigTex.com for schedules and tickets.

Jane of Austin: A Novel of Sweet Tea and Sensibility

Just a few years after their father’s business scandal shatters their lives, Jane and Celia Woodward find themselves forced out of their San Francisco tea shop. The last thing Jane wants is to leave their beloved shop on Valencia Street, but when Celia insists on a move to Austin, Texas, the sisters pack up their kid sister Margot and Jane’s tea plants, determined to start over yet again.

In this modern spin on the Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility, the Woodward sisters must contend with new ingredients in unfamiliar kitchens, a dash of heartbreak, and the fragile hope that maybe home isn’t so far away.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her family in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. This National Book Award Finalist for fiction was adapted into a film starring Tom Hanks.

Discovering their Voice

Every child’s journey is a unique melody composed of giggles, babbling, and, eventually, words. Sometimes, though, the words don’t quite find their way out. What do you do then? Some parents in this situation hope their child will grow out of it. Others hesitate to seek help, thinking they don’t have the time or money to spend on speech therapy.

While the idea of speech therapy can feel daunting, it can often be the first step in unlocking a child’s full potential. In speech therapy, a speech therapist works with children to help them communicate better. A child might work with a speech therapist one-on-one, in a small group, or in a classroom. Some speech disorders improve with age, while others may require years of speech therapy.

There are many reasons kids might need speech therapy, including hearing impairments, autism, cleft lip or cleft palate, or cognitive delays. Children might also benefit from speech therapy if they have trouble understanding simple sentences or get easily frustrated when reading, listening, or talking.

Here are some of the many benefits of speech therapy:

Improved communication skills. Through speech therapy, children develop clearer speech, making it easier for them to express themselves and be understood by others.

Enhanced language development. When your child works with a speech therapist, they begin to expand their vocabulary, improve their grammar, and enhance their language comprehension — all things that can help them as they progress through school.

Better social interaction. Many activities in speech therapy help children improve their social skills. They learn how to listen well and take turns speaking, which can help them in their relationships with friends and family.

SPEECH THERAPY FOR CHILDREN

Fewer frustrations. Communication challenges can sometimes spark frustration and challenging behaviors in kids. Speech therapy guides them to find suitable ways to express their emotions, resulting in a decrease in disruptive behaviors.

Better grades. Communication is essential for learning. Through speech therapy, kids improve their communication skills, which often correlates with better academic performance, especially in reading and writing.

Increased self-esteem and confidence. As children move through their speech therapy journey, they grow more confident in their ability to communicate with others. This, in turn, can create a huge boost in self-esteem and inspire them to want to make friends and engage more often with others.

Access to other communication methods. Sometimes, technology or pictures can help children communicate more effectively than speaking. A speech therapist can help children learn nonverbal communication techniques, like sign language or picture communication systems to express themselves.

A sense of empowerment. Speech therapy empowers kids to stand up for themselves. They learn how to advocate for themselves and express their thoughts and feelings. As they grow, they feel empowered to speak up for what they need.

Speech therapy isn’t just about helping children discover their voice — it’s empowering them to be heard and understood. If you think your child could benefit from speech therapy, find a qualified specialist in your area. The sooner you begin therapy — ideally by age five — the better the results tend to be.

BRIGHT SMILES

TEETH WHITENING AND OTHER SMILE PERFECTING TREATMENTS

A dazzling smile can light up a room, boost confidence, and leave a lasting impression. For those seeking a radiant grin, teeth whitening and other professional dental procedures can provide safe, effective, transformative results.

IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING

Teeth whitening is a cornerstone of cosmetic dentistry. In-office whitening treatments, which typically involve using hydrogen peroxide bleaching gels activated by laser or LED lights, can brighten teeth by several shades in just one session. Dentists assess enamel health and customize the treatment to avoid sensitivity, a common concern with DIY kits.

An in-office teeth whitening treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. The duration depends on the technology used and the severity of the tooth stain severity. The number of teeth whitening sessions needed varies based on the initial tooth color, desired whiteness, and stain type. Patients with severe staining may require two to three sessions spaced days or weeks apart to minimize sensitivity and help ensure even results. Results can last up to two years, depending on lifestyle factors such as diet and smoking.

For patients preferring at-home convenience, dentists provide custom-fitted trays with

professional-grade whitening gel, offering results comparable to in-office procedures over a few weeks instead of in one or two in-office treatments. At-home teeth whitening prescribed by a dentist is generally preferred to over-the-counter teeth whitening kits in terms of effectiveness, safety, and customization.

PORCELAIN VENEERS

Beyond whitening, other professional dental procedures enhance smiles comprehensively. Porcelain veneers — custom-made porcelain shells bonded to prepared teeth — correct discoloration, chips, uneven tooth lengths, and subtle misalignment, creating a flawless appearance.

Porcelain veneers typically last up to 15 years with proper care, though some can last up to 20 years or more. Proper maintenance, such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups, can extend their lifespan.

Low or no-prep veneers are ultra-thin, custom-crafted porcelain or composite shells bonded to the front of teeth to enhance their appearance with minimal enamel removal. They address cosmetic issues while preserving more natural teeth than traditional veneers. The procedure

is less invasive and may be reversible in many cases.

DENTAL BONDING

This treatment involves applying, hardening, and contouring tooth-colored resin to repair minor imperfections and brighten your smile. It offers a costeffective alternative to porcelain veneers that brightens tooth color and addresses chips, cracks, and gaps.

During the procedure, the dentist lightly etches the tooth surface to help the resin adhere. Next, a pliable colored resin is applied directly onto the affected area. When the dentist has finished molding it to achieve the desired shape and texture, the material is hardened with a special ultraviolet light or laser, bonding it to the tooth. Next, the bonded area is polished to blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth, improving appearance.

TRAINING AND EXPERTISE

Choosing a qualified dentist is crucial. Look for professionals with cosmetic dentistry certifications and positive patient reviews. A consultation can clarify options, costs, and expected outcomes, ensuring informed decisions. With advancements in dental technology, achieving a bright, healthy smile has never been more accessible.

More than headwear, the cowboy hat is a symbol of resilience, independence, rugged individualism, cultural heritage, and timeless style. Whether shielding a rancher from the sun or turning heads at a fashion event, it symbolizes the heart and soul of the Lone Star State.

Brief History

The cowboy hat’s roots in the U.S. trace back to the mid-19th century when cattle ranchers and frontiersmen needed durable headwear to shield them from the harsh elements of the open range. John B. Stetson is credited with creating the first true American cowboy hat in 1865, dubbed the “Boss of the Plains.” With its wide brim for sun protection and high crown for ventilation, the design was both functional and versatile. Over time, regional variations emerged, reflecting the diverse needs of cowboys across the West.

By the 20th century, cowboy hats transcended their utilitarian purpose, becoming symbols of Western identity, and Hollywood amplified their allure. Today, they’re worn by ranchers, rodeo stars, urban trendsetters, and pop stars alike, blending utility with contemporary flair.

Cowboy Hat Etiquette

Wearing a cowboy hat comes with unwritten rules rooted in respect and tradition, and proper etiquette reflects one’s character. For instance, men traditionally remove their hats indoors, especially in private homes or formal settings, as a sign of courtesy. However, in public spaces like barns or saloons, keeping it on is often acceptable. Tipping the hat to greet someone remains a charming gesture of politeness. Handling another person’s hat is a serious faux pas in Texas — considered as personal as touching their horse. When setting a hat down, always place it crown-down to preserve the brim’s shape and protect its interior from dirt. These customs underscore the cowboy hat’s cultural significance.

Fashion Forward

The versatile cowboy hat remains a bold fashion statement, bridging Western heritage with high-end style. Modern designs range from classic felt and straw hats to embellished versions adorned with rhinestones, turquoise, leather and snakeskin bands, or feathers. Even celebrities like Beyoncé have embraced the trend. Neutral tones offer timeless appeal, while vibrant colors or distressed finishes cater to bolder tastes.

Iconic Texas Hatmakers and Brands

Below are a few of the master hatmakers and better-known brands that help ensure every hat tells a story of Texas pride and Western spirit.

Hatco Inc., based in Garland, Texas, makes hats for the Stetson and Resistol brands. Stetson, considered the gold standard by many, crafts hats with premium materials for durability and elegance. Resistol, especially known for its rodeo-ready hats, is favored by professional cowboys for its rugged construction.

American Hat Company in Bowie, Texas, was founded in 1915 in Houston. It prides itself on handcrafted straw and felt hats and is still considered the only cowboy hat company to produce waterproof straw hats. AmericanHat.net

Master Hatters of Texas, headquartered in Garland, is known for its quality craftsmanship in straw, wool, and fur felt. The company produces several cowboy hat brands, including their own MHT line. MasterHatters.com

Justin Hats, also in Garland, offers cowboy hats renowned for their fit, comfort, and style. They undergo “rigorous quality testing to ensure they withstand harsh ranch conditions, intense sun exposure, and daily wear.” Justin-cowboy.com

From Pasture to Plate

TEXAS’ RANCH-TO-TABLE RENAISSANCE

The ranch-to-table movement is gaining traction as people seek to source meat, produce, and dairy directly from independent ranchers and farmers. Driven by a desire to reconnect with food origins, support sustainability, and strengthen community ties, this trend emphasizes local, transparent, and ethical food systems. Here we explore key drivers and benefits of this movement.

L imiting the Supply Chain

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in our sprawling supply chains, prompting interest in local sourcing. Eager to establish relationships with independent farmers and to support local economies, many of us turned to ranchto-table providers for organic produce and ethically raised meats. In doing so, we developed a love for super-fresh, just-picked produce and pasture-raised, antibiotic and hormone-free meats.

Transparency and Trust

The ranch-to-table movement builds trust amid growing concerns about industrial farming, including antibiotic overuse, hormones, and inhumane conditions. Independent ranchers typically offer transparency, inviting farm visits and showcasing pasture-raised livestock, organic produce, and regenerative practices through farm events and videos. And speaking of transparency, did you know that the current voluntary labeling system allows for beef to be labeled “Product of USA” if it’s raised in a foreign country and merely packaged in the U.S. Thankfully, this will change when the USDA finalizes a new labeling rule, but it highlights the importance of understanding exactly where

your food is sourced. For more information, visit FoodPrint.org/blog/country-of-origin.

Fresh from the Farm

Did you know up to 20% of U.S. supermarket beef is imported? It’s often shipped via sea freight for several weeks from countries like Australia. Imported pork from Europe can take around 10 to 20 days to ship. Meat from independent ranchers is often raised and processed locally, then packaged and delivered quickly. Many offer grass-fed, grass-finished beef and pasture-raised poultry and pork using regenerative practices, appealing to health and eco-conscious buyers alike. Additionally, customers can often request custom cuts or bulk orders. When it comes to produce, vegetables and fruits from farm stands, farmers markets, and subscription CSA (community supported agriculture) boxes bring us closer to sustainable, fresh, and community-connected food systems.

Community and Country-Focused

Buying directly from U.S. ranchers keeps money in local economies and directly supports farm families rather than corporate giants which may have complex national and international supply chains. Independent ranchers filled the gap during

the recent pandemic, offering subscription boxes, CSA) models, and farmers’ market sales. These options provide convenience while fostering a sense of connection, and consumers often receive newsletters or updates about the ranch and the owners and their families, personalizing the experience.

Find Direct-to-Consumer Farms

Online platforms and social media allow ranchers to market directly to consumers. Websites like BeefMap.com, FarmToTableTX.com, and TexasRealFood. com, along with many others, make it easy to find nearby, high-quality, direct-toconsumer food products. And don’t forget to regularly visit farmers markets for fresh meat, produce, and dairy products.

TEXAS Tunes

MUSICAL LOVE LETTERS TO THE LONE STAR STATE

Whether you’re two-stepping in a honky-tonk or driving under a pink-hued West Texas sky, one thing is certain: Texas has a song for it. Artists from across decades and genres have found inspiration in the state’s landscapes, legends, and lore. From classic country to modern rock, these ten songs celebrate the spirit of Texas with lyrics that stretch as wide as the horizon.

“Deep in the Heart of Texas” –Gene Autry

This cheerful clap-along classic is practically a second state anthem. With its imagery of prairie dogs, wide skies, and moonlit nights, it’s no wonder this song has been sung at ball games and backyard BBQs for generations.

“If You’re Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)” – Alabama

A toe-tapping tribute to Texas audiences, this hit from the legendary country group Alabama reminds touring musicians what matters in the Lone Star State: energy, heart, and a good fiddle solo. “Amarillo by Morning” – George Strait

No Texas playlist is complete without George Strait. This rodeo ballad captures the grit and grace of life on the road — and the

enduring pull of Texas towns like Amarillo.

“Texas (When I Die)”

– Tanya Tucker

Tanya Tucker, a proud Texan herself, belts out a tribute to her home state in this spirited track. It’s both a personal anthem and a heartfelt nod to those who feel a lifelong tie to the land.

“La Grange” – ZZ Top

With its unmistakable guitar riff, “La Grange” put this small Texas town — and its mysteries — on the map. ZZ Top’s bluesy rock jam has become a cultural staple far beyond the state lines.

“That’s Right (You’re Not from Texas)” – Lyle Lovett

Witty, warm, and 100% Texan, this tune from Lyle Lovett is equal parts invitation and inside joke. It’s a tribute to the pride of being from Texas — and the good-natured teasing that comes with it. Lovett’s clever lyrics and smooth delivery make this one a standout.

“Beautiful Texas” – Willie Nelson

Willie’s tender version of this traditional tune paints a picture of Texas with poetic brushstrokes — from fields of bluebonnets to the stars at night. It’s sentimental in the best way.

“Miles and Miles of Texas” – Asleep at the Wheel

With Western swing energy and lyrics that stretch across the open plains, this track celebrates the sheer size and heart of Texas. Asleep at the Wheel brings old-school charm to a road tripready classic.

“Texas Flood” – Stevie Ray Vaughan

Guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan delivered this blues powerhouse with raw emotion and staggering skill. It’s a song about heartbreak and hardship — Texan style.

“My Texas” – Josh Abbott Band featuring Pat Green

From tubing the Frio to watching sunsets in Marfa, this anthem is a checklist of Texas experiences. It’s an invitation to explore, appreciate, and love the state like a local.

While this list doesn’t even scratch the surface of Texasinspired tunes, it’s a solid starting point to create your own curated playlist — whether you’re roadtripping through the Hill Country, slow dancing under string lights, or grilling under the stars. So turn it up, and let Texas sing.

Bulb Basics

WHAT TO PLANT IN TEXAS — AND WHEN

There’s something magical about planting a bulb and watching it transform into a brilliant bloom. Whether you’re dreaming of daffodils in the spring or lilies come summer, bulbs are a rewarding way to add color and charm to your landscape. But in Texas, with its varied climate zones and unpredictable weather, timing is everything.

START WITH THE RIGHT BULBS

First, know your zone. Most of Texas falls within USDA zones 7 through 9, which means a wide variety of bulbs will thrive, but they need to be planted at just the right time. Spring-flowering bulbs — like tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and crocus — should go into the ground in late fall, typically November through early December. These bulbs need a period of “chilling” to bloom properly, especially in warmer areas like Central and South Texas. Refrigerate them for 6 to 8 weeks before planting.

Summer-flowering bulbs — such as lilies, caladiums, gladiolus, and elephant ears

— can be planted in early to mid-spring once the threat of frost has passed and the soil warms. These love Texas heat and bring bold beauty through the hottest months.

PREP MAKES PERFECT

Bulbs are surprisingly low maintenance once planted, but they need well-draining soil and a sunny spot to truly thrive. Before planting, enrich the soil with compost and make sure water won’t pool after a rain.

Bulbs rot easily in soggy ground.

Plant bulbs at a depth that’s about three times their height. Pointy end up for most varieties. Water well after planting and apply mulch to help insulate and retain moisture.

A LITTLE PLANNING, BIG PAYOFF

For long-lasting impact, stagger your bloom times. Pair early-spring bloomers like crocus and snowdrops with mid-season daffodils and late-blooming tulips. Then transition into summer with gladiolus, cannas, and caladiums.

In Texas, many spring bulbs act as annuals unless pre-chilled or replanted. But some,

like daffodils and spider lilies, naturalize beautifully and will return year after year with little fuss.

With a bit of planning and some patience, your garden will be bursting with color from late winter through summer — and you’ll feel like a pro every time a new shoot pops through the soil.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

A SAN ANTONIO TRADITION REVIVES CONNECTION

For a few hours every November, the souls of the dead reconnect with the living, according to Día de los Muertos tradition. These hours taste like pan de muerto, a pastry flavored with anise and orange. The time smells like marigolds, an unmistakable musk from lush, wrinkled petals. Beautiful skeletons stalk the streets in parades, dressed to the nines in flower crowns.

Día de los Muertos sparks a city-wide celebration in San Antonio each year, now known as one of the nation’s largest to embrace the meaningful observance.

Visit the Alamo City for spectacular floating parades along the River Walk, large outdoor concerts at HemisFair Park, and the installation of countless altars decked with meaningful tributes to people and pets loved in life.

New World, Old Customs

Bright and colorful as papel picado, a Mexican paper craft, this holiday brings our cherished past connections up to be enjoyed, re-lived in memory, and shared with others. Vibrant costumes of skeletons, or calacas, and faces painted like skulls, or calaveras, put an approachable spin on the traditions that stretch back thousands of years to the indigenous Nahua and Aztec heritage of marking communion with the dead. That folklore in place, Catholic and Christian conquerors merged their own pagan and European practices with customs observed in the New World. Thus, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day coincide with Día de los Muertos today.

Marigolds for La Muerte

This joyful ritual includes personal remembrances of those no longer with us and a communal sense of honoring death. Spanish traditions of visiting graves with flowers and candles remain important. Bringing bread to the grave, another Spanish tradition, lives in a Mexican pan dulce, or “sweet bread” called pan de muerto, bread of the dead, presented at altars. Nahua people believed that the souls of the dead faced nine challenges before being allowed to rest in Mictlán, and because of this, the Nahua often left helpful tools on their altars. Today, the tools have mostly given way to foods and drinks for the dead, particularly their old favorites, but every altar is unique and can include photos, momentos, or simply tortillas and fruit. If people remember to leave these ofrendas, or offerings, the souls of their loved ones can find their way to the living.

San Antonio Soul

San Antonio fetes Día de los Muertos with major events across historic sites worth a visit even outside of the November affair. From October 11 to November 14, Día de los Muertos at the Missions, behind Mission Concepcion, focuses on a quiet celebration of altars and ofrendas for the dead at Padre Margil Pilgrimage Center. Other small ofrendas can be found at The Pearl, The Briscoe Museum, and even the San Antonio Zoo. On October 24, the 7th Day of the Dead River Parade will glide more than two dozen floats down the River Walk after dark. At the historic neighborhood known as La Villita, a Day of the Dead Festival lasts from October 24 to 26 with lots of food vendors, artisan crafts, and alebrijes, mythical Mexican figures made up of many types of animals. From October 25-26, the 12th annual Muertos Fest at Hemisfair Park will present live music, processions, workshops, and a market. This is the event once named a Best Fall Fest by National Geographic.

On the same days, Market Square fans should enjoy visiting the original chili-queen hawker site for plenty of the same delicious food available yearround, with more activities for kids and performances for all. November 1 rings in the Día de los Muertos at Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, where self-taught folk artists share their wares. Also to be announced is the official day for the 48th annual Día de los Muertos at Centro Cultural Aztlan with Avenida de los Muertos Arts and Crafts mercadito, or market.

For many, Día de los Muertos is a comforting way to maintain ties with those no longer present in life. For others, it’s a time to learn about traditions, like the Calavera Catrina figure created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada in 1911, still in use today.

The roots of this two-day party stretch back thousands of years, but today’s living tradition has seen its popularity rise, with events like those in San Antonio becoming some of the most exciting in America.
