“His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”

– Lamentations 3:22-23

One of my favorite Bible promises is 2 Corinthians 5:17 which tells us, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” That’s what a new year is—a fresh start—a do-over—another chance. But that’s also what the Christian life offers us every single day—a clean slate.

And when we inevitably mess up, another promise is found in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” That’s our promise and our inheritance, as we begin 2026. We get a new year, a new day, and new adventures in our walk with the Lord.

As you step into the year 2026, may the One who loves you give you renewed strength (Isaiah 40:31) and peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:6-7). May He be a light unto your path (Psalm 119:105) and a new song in your mouth (Psalm 40:3). And remember, “In his great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)

IS A COUNTERFEIT CREEPING IN?

Redefining R ev ival

Ibelieve it is a dangerous thing to use words carelessly. Words reflect and shape our belief systems. They create our ideologies. They mold our expectations. Words become filters that impact our perception of reality. The way we define words shapes our actions. If a man labels his compromise as “grace,” he will embrace it. If he labels his sin as a “struggle,” he will excuse it. If he calls his lukewarmness “balance,” he will settle for it. The words we use to label the realities and experiences of our lives are of great magnitude.

And in the church today, there is a word I’ve been hearing that is causing me concern — a word I fear our enemy has repackaged with a new definition and slidden back into our everyday vocabulary with great subtlety: Revival!

It was only three years ago when we first began to hear the rumblings of a great revival throughout the Church in America. If you were following Christian headlines around that time, you would remember the story. On February 8th, 2023, at the end of a Wednesday morning chapel service at Asbury University, a group of students chose to remain in Hughes Auditorium for an extended time of worship after the scheduled service had ended. This act of piety became the catalyst for what was labeled “The Asbury Revival of 2023.” For the next two weeks, thousands flocked to Asbury for 24/7 worship. One popular megachurch pastor proclaimed that what was happening at Asbury was “a unique outpouring of the Holy Spirit.” As the world watched via livestream, pastors, influencers, and media echoed that proclamation: God was pouring Himself out in a miraculous way.

And now, as I type these words, we stand only three months removed from one of the greatest tragedies of our day — the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk. His death drew over 90,000 people to his memorial service, where believers and unbelievers alike heard the preaching of the Gospel. Hundreds of

thousands, if not millions, watched online. Over 65,000 new Turning Point USA chapters were applied for across the nation. College campuses held vigils and gatherings where thousands of youth came to honor his life and message. And once again, that word — revival — is being used to describe what is happening. Christian influencers, pastors, and news media all seem to be proclaiming with one accord, “America is experiencing a revival.” It seems that once again, God is supposedly pouring out His Spirit in an unusual way.

My friend, if those words are true, we should rejoice. Revival is the heart-cry of every true Christian and the greatest fear of our enemy. It is the closest thing we will taste of heaven in this life. But on the flip side, if we are misusing that word, it may be to our own demise. If the enemy can redefine the word and cause us to accept a counterfeit as the real thing, then he has us exactly where he wants us: We will never seek what we believe we already possess.

So, what is genuine revival?

Google’s AI defines it as “the act of bringing something back to life or to a more active state.” The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “an improvement in the condition or strength of something.”

It’s my opinion that both definitions are closer to the truth than what we are experiencing in America today. Google seems to have chosen its words more carefully than we do: bringing something back to life implies it was dead before. Oxford’s definition implies a need for improvement or a lack of strength. Both definitions point toward something Scripture affirms: true revival is always built upon repentance and a return to holiness. Anything lacking these elements is not revival.

As A.W. Tozer said, “A revival that does not emphasize holiness is a sham.”

The seed of revival had been implanted in the heart of Isaiah when he saw the Lord sitting on the throne, high and lifted up. What was the response of Isaiah to this vision? “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” ( Isaiah 6:5)

Genuine revival took place in the heart of Ezra: “As soon as I heard this, I tore my garment and my cloak and pulled hair from my head and beard and sat appalled… And at the evening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment and my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to the Lord my God, saying: “O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens.” (Ezra 9:3,5)

Consider the immediate response of King Josiah’s heart at the beginning of his great revival: “When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.” (2 Kings 22:11)

Once again, true revival begins with mourning — not excitement. And I do not mean mourning over the death of Charlie Kirk, as tragic as that was. Revival begins

with mourning over our sin and the condition of our hearts before a holy God. And then, when the season of mourning is over, radical change begins:

After being convicted by the rediscovered Word of God, Josiah went on a holy rampage through the land — destroying altars, smashing high places, and grinding the Asherah into dust. Few stories picture revival as vividly as the revival under King Josiah.

But what might revival look like in our era?

Let us consider the great Welsh Revival of 1904–1905, widely considered to be the last major example of true revival. J. Edwin Orr, a leading historian of revivals, described it this way:

“The places of amusement and the taverns were practically empty… drunkenness was immediately cut in half… many taverns went bankrupt.”

Eifion Evans wrote:

“Crime had dropped to such an extent that magistrates had no cases to hear… Profanity disappeared… There was a great wave of missionary commitments as young men and women abandoned careers to go abroad.”

Evan Roberts, whom God used mightily in the Welsh Revival, wrote:

“Many left their prospects, their professions, their comforts, to preach Christ to the ends of the earth.”

Dr. G. Campbell Morgan wrote:

“I am honestly afraid of exaggeration… but the revival is doing in a few weeks more than centuries of legislation could accomplish.”

The Welsh Revival was not the only one. There were the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Moravian Revival, the Cambridge Seven, the Student Volunteer Movement [revival], the 1857–1858 Businessmen’s Revival, the Hebrides Revival, the Korean Revival of 1907, and the East African Revival, just to name a few. But what was the common denominator in all of these genuine revivals? They were all marked by a renewed fear of God, deep repentance, and a return to holiness and piety.

In each of these revivals, the lives of individuals and families were completely upended. Cities and communities were radically transformed, nearly overnight in many instances. Hidden sins were confessed. Possessions were sold. Bank

accounts were emptied. Men traded worldly success for missionary sacrifice. Days that had been filled with hobbies and entertainment were exchanged for times of fasting and prayer. We must understand that when a genuine outpouring of the Holy Spirit comes upon a person or a people group, the flimsy foundations of their entire life will be shaken, and they will be completely wrecked for the cause of Christ. There will be a Holy disruption to their entire way of life.

So now I ask you: Is that what is happening in America today? Are we truly seeing revival, or are we merely seeing large amounts of people gather to sing the latest Christian hits together? Are we seeing emotionalism or repentance? Is it possible we are beginning to embrace a version of revival that is far more comfortable — a cheap counterfeit that requires no real change — because real revival is something we want no part of?

A DENTAL HOME for theWhole Family

The world would be a funny place if we all grew up to be what we wanted to be as kids. To paraphrase Lily Tomlin, imagine a world filled with cowboys, firefighters, ballerinas, and—in the case of Talon Davis—radio psychiatrists like Frasier. As a young man, he could easily see himself in that role counseling with patients, offering advice to improve their lives, and empowering them to be their own best advocate.

In the end, Talon didn’t pursue that early dreams of psychiatry, but he’s often surprised how his role as a family dentist allows him to meet that exact brief. Counsel with patients. Check. Offer advice that improves their lives. Check. Empower patients to be their own best advocates. Check.

“As it turns out, dentists serve as therapists a significant portion of the time,” he mused. “We live with our patients through their struggles and victories, while supporting them any way we can. Our role as educator is vital as we teach our patients the best way forward in their oral-care journey. And the patient relationships we forge are the best part of our jobs.”

A ONE-STOP DENTAL SHOP

On any given day, Dr. Davis sees patients seeking relief from a dental emergency, others wanting to be proactive in maintaining optimal oral health, others looking to restore damage that’s been done to their smiles, and still others seeking cosmetic dentistry to achieve the smile they’ve always wanted.

Together with Dr. Jordan Brunson, he’s able to provide patients with a true one-stopshop for all their dental needs.

“Once a patient is comfortable at our practice, most don’t want to be referred out to specialists for specific procedures,” Dr. Davis said. “We’d much rather offer the full menu of services they need right here under one roof.”

And while they do their share of fillings and crowns, they truly enjoy the challenge of more specialized procedures. Toward that end, Drs. Davis and Brunson have each completed hundreds of hours of continuing-education classes to increase their skillset and have invested in the latest, cutting-edge dental technology.

PAINLESS FROM CARE TO COST

Before Dr. Davis was a doctor, he was a patient. He remembers all too well what it feels like to sit in the dentist’s chair wondering what they’re about to do to him even while worrying what the procedure was going to cost him. He never wants his patients to worry about either. “I’ve found that open communication is key to alleviating fear,” he said. “If I take my time to truly listen to my patients’ concerns

"EVERYONE SMILES IN THE SAME LANGUAGE."
— GEORGE CARLIN

and desires and explain exactly what I’m about to do, why, and what it will cost, then only proceed when I’ve answered all their questions, it removes the unknown and the ‘lack-of-control’ feeling from dentistry which is where a lot of dental phobia begins.”

Dr. Davis has also taken advantage of dental technology which makes dentistry gentler than ever before. “There’s so much we can do now to make dentistry supremely comfortable while keeping costs low,” he said. “There’s no reason a patient should be in pain. One of my favorite things to hear after a procedure is, ‘That wasn’t as bad as I thought.’ The next time that patient sit in the chair, they’ll feel calmer and less anxious. We also recently bought the equipment to provide same day crowns— no more unreliable temporaries—and it’s been a massive success.”

MEET DR. DAVIS

Originally from Edmond, Oklahoma, Talon Davis grew up playing the double bass in symphony orchestras, staying active in his church choir, and working in his family music studio. He completed two degrees in music performance and performed with major symphonies in the DFW area for years, before hearing a call to serve through dentistry. When not on the job, he

still loves playing his double bass. He and his wife, Kristin, a stay at home mom, have a beautiful five-year-old daughter that’s the light of their lives.

Dr. Davis regularly volunteers at Mission Arlington providing dental services to the underserved and has set a goal this year for South Arlington Smiles to provide $50,000 in dental care to underserved communities throughout Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Mansfield. He’s a big supporter of local school and health fairs where he offers dental health education. And when time allows, he enjoys getting in as much golf and Sooner football as he can.

MEET DR. BRUNSON

Jordan Brunson is a passionate and compassionate healthcare provider committed to quality, comprehensive dental care. His personable demeanor and positive energy overflow into every room he enters. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, before attending East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Brunson has been recognized for his leadership acumen with the American Student Dental Association Distinguished Leader Award. Committed to his professional growth, he regularly attends continuing education as an ongoing Seattle Study Club member. In addition to general dentistry, Dr. Brunson specializes in wisdom-teeth removal, dental implants, sedation dentistry, fillings, and root canal treatment.

When not on the job, Dr. Brunson loves spending time with his wife, Shala, and son, Kylen, traveling and experiencing new DFW restaurants. He also enjoys golfing, watching a good movie, and attending livemusic sessions.

SERVING THEIR PATIENTS

For the team at South Arlington Smiles, dentistry is all about service to others. “My grandmother instilled a strong work ethic in me and made it clear that what we do, we do in service to the people in our lives,” Dr. Davis said. “She taught me that being true in what you do allows you to accept the outcomes life delivers. Dentistry has allowed me to serve my patients well while still being available to my family.”

Magic of the Season

GRAND PRAIRIE HOSTS 2025 WFAA SANTA’S HELPERS TOY DRIVE

Grand Prairie lit up with holiday spirit this season as Mayor Ron Jensen proudly welcomed the city’s role as host for the 2025 WFAA Santa’s Helpers Toy Drive. The community helped achieve an outstanding milestone of 8,000 toys, bringing joy to children across North Texas.

Donation boxes placed at recreation centers, libraries, and City Hall quickly filled with new, unwrapped toys contributed by generous residents. The celebration continued at Epic Rec at EpicCentral, where WFAA’s Pete Delkus broadcast live amid festive

performances by Grand Prairie high school bands, cheerleaders, and drill teams.

Now in its 56th year, WFAA’s Santa’s Helpers remains one of North Texas’ largest and longest-running toy drives, providing over 50,000 toys annually to children in Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties. Through community donations, drive-thru events, and financial contributions, WFAA partners with local nonprofits to ensure thousands of children experience the magic of the season.

Grand Prairie was honored to help carry on this meaningful holiday tradition — proving once again that generosity is one of the city’s greatest strengths.

PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION: A NEWER OPTION FOR MEN WITH AN ENLARGED PROSTATE

Most men do not bring up urinary symptoms right away. At first, they adjust. They wake up once at night, then twice. Sitting through a long meeting or a movie becomes difficult. When they go out to dinner or attend an event, many men find themselves constantly aware of where the nearest bathroom is. Over time, these disruptions begin to affect sleep, focus, and overall quality of life.

In many cases, the cause is benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. For years, treatment options were largely limited to medications or surgery. Today, that conversation has expanded. One option more men are hearing about is Prostate Artery Embolization, often called PAE.

WHAT IS PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION?

PAE is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure designed to improve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. Rather than removing prostate tissue or operating through the urinary tract, the procedure works by reducing blood flow to the prostate. This causes the gland to slowly shrink over time, easing pressure on the bladder and improving symptoms.

The procedure is performed through a small access point in the groin. In experienced hands, it typically takes about 60 minutes, and most patients go home within a couple of hours, usually without the need for a catheter.

“For many men with BPH, PAE is a very good option with a low risk of sexual side effects,” says Dr. Brian Wong, interventional radiologist at Urology Partners of North Texas. “Experience and careful patient selection are key to successful outcomes.”

HOW WELL DOES PAE WORK IN THE LONG RUN?

When PAE was first introduced, one of the biggest questions was whether symptom relief would last. As longer follow-up data have become available, the results have been encouraging. Studies suggest that more than 70% of men continue to do well five years after PAE and do not require an additional BPH intervention during that time.

Improvement after PAE is usually gradual. Over weeks to months, many men notice fewer urgent trips to the bathroom, improved urinary flow, and less disruption to sleep and daily activities.

WHY DOES EXPERIENCE MATTER?

PAE is a technically challenging procedure. The blood supply to the prostate varies from person to person, and identifying the correct vessels requires precision and familiarity with vascular anatomy. As techniques have evolved and physician experience has increased, outcomes have become more consistent and

durable. Dr. Wong has performed more than 1,000 prostate artery embolization procedures, a level of experience that plays an important role in achieving reliable results.

WHY IS SEEING A UROLOGIST STILL IMPORTANT?

PAE is not the right answer for every man with urinary symptoms. A thorough evaluation by a urologist is essential before deciding on treatment. This includes confirming that symptoms are truly caused by BPH, evaluating prostate size and anatomy, and reviewing prostate-specific antigen levels to rule out other concerns, including prostate cancer. In some cases, other treatments may offer better or faster relief depending on the individual patient.

ABOUT UPNT

Urology Partners of North Texas has offered Prostate Artery Embolization for more than two years with excellent results. PAE is performed by Dr. Brian Wong at the IR Centers at UPNT, located at USMD Hospital in Arlington. To learn more or schedule an appointment online, visit UPNT.com.

Sitcom during the day, movie at night – day after day, for months.

In Future Boy, Fox tells the remarkable story of playing two landmark roles at the same time – a slice of entertainment history that’s never been told. Using new interviews with the cast and crew of both projects, the result is a vividly drawn and eye-opening story of creative achievement by a beloved icon.

“Not all providers are equally knowledgeable about hormone therapy. It is important to nd the experts in the eld to help provide you with the most individualized plan of care possible. Hormones are not ‘one-size- ts-all’ -providers must focus on unique treatment plans for YOU, to make sure your personal needs are met”

Mandy Cotten, DNP, APRN, FNP-C INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE

A HORMONE REPLACEMENT CENTER

NONE OF US EXPERIENCED PUBERTY EXACTLY THE SAME.

NONE OF US EXPERIENCED PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH EXACTLY THE SAME.

And, as much as you can rely on your older friend or sister to answer your myriad of questions about menopause and perimenopause, none of us will experience those stages of life the same either. Some women breeze through with a minimum of symptoms or interruptions in their lives. Others will slog through years of hot flashes, sleeplessness, night sweats, urinary troubles, brain fog, thinning hair, vaginal discomfort, and erratic mood swings. For those of us in the latter group, there’s red wine, dark chocolate, shopping, and — mercifully — hormone replacement therapy.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a medication that contains female hormones to replace the estrogen that, up until now, our bodies have been producing naturally. And it’s not just for women. Testosterone replacement therapy is being shown to help older men reduce their risks of heart disease, diabetes — even death — by reducing their chance of developing metabolic syndrome. For women, introducing a steady stream of estrogen back into your body, HRT not only

offers relief from the symptoms mentioned above but the added benefit of preventing bone loss and reducing the chance of bone fracture after menopause. Not every man or woman finds HRT necessary, so the first thing you want to find is a practitioner who’ll take time to listen to your symptoms, educate you about your options, and help you decide whether you need intervention at all.

An OB/GYN, internist, or family medicine doctor may be able to offer you HRT, or they may recommend you to a specialist. Some practitioners provide different types of HRT, and some specialize in one type. So, you can always begin your search by studying and deciding which type is right for you, your symptoms, and your lifestyle. Then, see who in your area offers that type of therapy. Or you may want to ask friends and family for a recommendation and make an appointment to talk to local practitioners about the therapy they think would benefit you.

HRT isn’t one-size-fits-all. For instance, if you still have your uterus, estrogen may

be given in combination with the hormone progesterone. Then, there’s bioidentical hormone therapy which uses hormones chemically identical to the ones your body makes. Because they are, your body can absorb them more easily. Because HRT comes in many forms — pills, patches, injections, pellets, gels, or suppositories — you want an HRT provider who takes the time to explain the pros and cons of each, then respects your ultimate decision.

There are practical matters to consider, as well, such as whether your insurance covers a provider and whether their offices are conveniently located. Whichever way you approach your search, you want to find a practitioner with lots of HRT experience treating women just like you, who makes you feel comfortable, respects your opinion, and answers all your questions in a way you understand. There is life after menopause. In fact, a recent University of Melbourne study concluded that most women are their happiest and most content after age 65.

AN AUDIOLOGIST

“Look for an audiologist o ce with strong credentials, positive patient reviews, and a history of good service. Focus on clinics that o er personalized care, t multiple hearing aid brands, provide excellent followup, and are conveniently located with accessible facilities. Always prioritize clear communication, understanding your needs, and a provider who listens to you for a good long-term t, not just a one-time sale.”

Blaising

APPROXIMATELY 20% OF ADULTS IN THE U.S. REPORT SOME DEGREE OF HEARING LOSS, ACCORDING TO THE HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. IF YOU’RE ONE OF THEM, IT CAN PROFOUNDLY AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE AND RELATE TO OTHERS.

Left untreated, it may lead to a host of problems, including feelings of isolation, negativism, stress, depression, and memory loss. It’s important to have your hearing checked regularly, even if you think your hearing is fi ne. And if you suspect a loved one suffers from hearing loss, urge them to see an audiologist for an evaluation.

In addition to routine diagnostic and hearing evaluations, today’s full-service audiologists provide comprehensive hearing healthcare. This typically includes hearing aid fittings, programming, and repairs, and services such as live speech mapping, tinnitus treatment options, cerumen removal, and more. Since you will likely see your audiologist regularly, look for one with an office that is conveniently located to where you live or work.

Location is important but finding an audiologist who meets your individual needs and is up to date on the latest innovations can be worth a drive. Amazing technological advancements have been made over the last

few years in the field of audiology. With this in mind, it is paramount that you fi nd an audiologist who is up to date on the latest advances in diagnostics and treatment options, including digital programmable hearing aids. These new-generation devices are not only powerful but so tiny they are barely perceptible. And they come with enhanced features such as the ability to pair them with your cell phone. The more hearing aid options an audiologist offers increases their ability to customize the technology to your needs and lifestyle.

When researching audiologists, remember their credentials can help you know you will be seen by a professional with extensive training who has demonstrated a commitment to maintaining the highest levels of professional competency. Someone who is board certified by the American Board of Audiology (ABA) has completed graduate studies in audiology from a regionally accredited university, has earned a doctoral degree in audiology (AuD), has completed a minimum of 2,000

hours of mentored professional practice, and must engage in 60 hours of continuous learning to recertify every three years. Other credentials may include CCC-A, which signifies the audiologist holds a certificate of clinical competency in audiology, issued by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Professionals awarded the CCC-A have completed a rigorous academic program, supervised clinical experience, and passed a national examination. F-AAA delineates audiologists who are Fellows of the American Academy of Audiology.

Lastly, finding an audiologist with whom you feel comfortable and who educates you is an advantage. Success with hearing instruments depends on your relationship with your audiologist as much as it does the actual hearing device itself. Better hearing and easier communication are a journey. You want an audiologist who will work with you in partnership every step of the way.

A HOME REMODELER

“Of course, when hiring a contractor, you want to do all the right things like interview the contractor, check their references, look at pictures of their work, make sure they use licensed trades, and verify insurance. ese things are all important but equally important is that you MUST like your contractor and TRUST your contractor. You are entering into a partnership and will work very closely with this person inside your home on a daily basis, so it is important that the chemistry and trust is there.”

Ti any Young TIFFANY YOUNG & CREW

YOUR HOME IS YOUR CASTLE, AND FOR MOST OF US, IT’S NOT JUST OUR ABODE AND PLACE OF REFUGE BUT ALSO OUR MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENT. BUT SOMETIMES, WE FEEL THE NEED TO REMODEL OUR CASTLE.

The family may have outgrown the original house, and rambunctious teens might need more space to call their own. Perhaps an older family member is moving in, and you need a small suite that provides a degree of privacy while allowing them to remain part of the family. Or maybe you’re just tired of your dated, original floorplan and want something fresh and more current.

All these are justifiable reasons for remodeling. To avoid shoddy quality, disappointing results, and unexpected expenses, experts in the field recommend paying attention to a few things along the way.

An excellent first step is to ask friends, relatives, and colleagues for referrals. Ask if the contractor was prompt and organized and returned calls quickly. Don’t be afraid to ask about bad experiences and ask about anything they wish they’d known before starting the process.

Aside from friends and relatives, consider contacting your local home builders association (start at NAHB. org) for the

names of member builders and remodelers.

Make sure they have a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.

Check to see how long they’ve been in business. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound company, and you want to make sure they’re still around to handle unexpected problems and service warranties.

Interview prospective contractors. How a contractor answers your questions is very important, but communication should go both ways. Each contractor candidate should ask plenty of questions, too.

Ask for references and call former customers to check on their work. Was the contractor on time and budget? Was the customer pleased with the outcome, and would they hire this contractor again? Consider contacting the local Better Business Bureau to check the contractor’s rating and fi nd out if any complaints have been filed against them and for what.

Make sure the remodeler has sufficient licensing and general liability insurance. If not, you could be financially responsible for any construction-related accidents that happen on your property.

Make sure the remodeler provides a complete and clearly written contract for your mutual benefit. This document can be your salvation or your ruin, so consider it carefully. It should contain a bid price, a detailed list of all the work to be done, a schedule of payments for work rendered, and a waiver of lien. The latter prevents subcontractors and suppliers from putting a lien on your house if the contractor doesn’t pay their invoices.

Finally, be wary of unusually low-priced bids. Remember, less expensive does not necessarily mean better.

Hopefully, by following these suggested guidelines, your home remodeling will be completed without serious problems, and your improved castle will be a source of joy and comfort for years to come.

A GENERAL SURGEON

“Take your time. Do your research. Know why you’re going to see a surgeon and ask questions. If you don’t understand the answer, ask the question again. Have a good dialogue. Remember that you are the patient.”

Gary K. Alexander, MD, FACS SURGICAL ASSOCIATES OF MANSFIELD

IF YOU’RE IN THE MARKET FOR A GENERAL SURGEON, YOU’VE PROBABLY EXHAUSTED ALL YOUR NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTIONS. NONE OF US WANTS TO HAVE SURGERY. BUT SOMETIMES IT’S YOUR BEST AND MOST VIABLE CHOICE.

General surgeons are educated and trained in the diagnosis and preoperative, operative, and post-operative management of patient care. Some surgeons put in the extra time required to offer state-of-the-art robotic surgery for greater precision and more favorable outcomes. Some conditions that may have you shopping for a surgeon are hernia, appendicitis, hemorrhoids, thyroid or parathyroid disease, breast cancer, gallbladder, Crohn’s disease, or complications from a previous surgery.

If your primary care provider is the one recommending a surgeon, they’re a good place to start. Ask for surgeons they recommend. But be sure to inquire, “Why are you recommending this surgeon?” If the answer is, “They accept your insurance,” that’s not a great recommendation. If the answer is “They are the surgeon we chose for my wife’s (mother’s, daughter’s, my) surgery,” now we’ve got a robust referral. Take your doctor’s recommendations and kick them around with family members, friends, or

other medical specialists to see what they have to say.

Once you have a few candidates, research their credentials and experience on sites such as Healthgrades.com or DocInfo. org. If the surgeon is board certified, you know they’ve completed at least five years of residency training following medical school, met all American Board of Surgery training requirements, completed a rigorous examination process, and adhere to periodic retesting.

Reading what other people are saying online about a doctor can provide some insight. Are patients generally happy with the care they received? Do they report positive outcomes? Online patient satisfaction surveys also typically ask about appointment scheduling, wait times, office environment, and office staff friendliness.

As you narrow your list, call each surgeon’s office to schedule a consultation and meet the doctor. Once there, inquire specifically about their experience with your condition and the

procedure you require. What complication might you experience? What are your risk factors? Inquire which hospital or out-patient center they use and do a little homework on them, too. Patients at top-rated facilities can have fewer complications and better success rates.

How does each surgeon communicate? Are you comfortable talking to them about personal topics? Do they show an interest in getting to know you? Do they welcome your questions and answer them thoroughly? Are they receptive to your treatment preferences? Do they include your input in decisions related to your care? Do you feel rushed?

Of course, you’ll want to find out what your insurance covers. A general surgeon who participates in your plan will mean less out-ofpocket. But if you find the perfect surgeon for you and they’re not on your insurance, fi nd out what it will cost to use an out-ofplan provider and weigh your options. If it’s not too different, it may be worth some extra expense to know you’re working with the best.

how to CHOOSE

A PRIVATE SCHOOL

“For many families, the right school is one that develops both minds and hearts. Seek a place where students are shaped by truth, compassion, and purpose, and where learning is grounded in values that last.”

Dr. Kathy Ferrell HEAD OF SCHOOL

PANTEGO CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

SELECTING A PRIVATE SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST DECISIONS YOU WILL MAKE AS A PARENT. FEW OTHER DECISIONS WILL SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT THEIR FUTURE HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS AND FORM THE PERSON YOUR CHILD WILL BECOME THAN THE SCHOOL THEY ATTEND.

Many parents send their children to a private school to receive more individual attention and to be in an environment that offers and reinforces academic rigor. Special needs are another consideration, as well as religious teaching, programs that develop a child’s talents, and an environment that supports the development of emotional and interpersonal social skills.

With so much at stake, it’s wise to adopt a wellthought-out approach to school selection. But before you begin identifying and analyzing prospects, consider your child’s needs. Think about the kind of student your child is and what type of environment they will most likely succeed in. It’s also important to recognize that the school that best served you may not necessarily be the right choice for your child. Next, create a collection of important criteria such as single-sex versus coed, distance from home or work, class size, budget, religious teachings, available extracurricular activities, and others — and develop a list of potential

schools to compare. This will help you narrow your selection down to a handful of the best prospects.

Before you schedule school tours, prepare a list of questions to ask.

For example, ask about the school philosophy and vision, class sizes and student-toteacher ratios, co-curricular activities, and how technology is integrated into the classroom and curriculum. Inquire about teacher qualifications and the professional development opportunities that are available to them. If a college preparatory education is important to you, ask about college matriculations, available AP classes, and even travel-abroad programs. Additionally, be sure to ask what type of student the school is looking for. If their answer doesn’t fit your child, they may not thrive or feel comfortable at that school.

Once you have a shortlist of schools and a set of questions, you’re ready to begin touring.

The school visit is a chance to establish your wishes and expectations of the school and what the school’s expectations are of their students. A school may look good on paper, but there’s nothing like experiencing the environment and programs firsthand.

When visiting a school with your child, carefully observe the students, teachers, and parents. Look into the classrooms to see if the students appear engaged. Are they talking with one another, or is the teacher sitting behind the desk while the kids work? Can you envision your child being successful at this school? Does it feel right? And don’t forget to check out the culture of the parking lot. What are the other parents like? Do they seem open and welcoming?

Ultimately, the fi nal decision comes down to both you and your child. In the end, as a parent, it’s important to listen to your children and trust their instincts as well as your own.

A HOSPITAL

THERE ARE FEW THINGS AS IMPORTANT AS HEALTH. CREATING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THAT INCLUDES GOOD NUTRITION, EXERCISE, ADEQUATE WATER CONSUMPTION, AND A GOOD NIGHT’S REST EARLY IN LIFE GOES A LONG WAY TOWARD ILLNESS PREVENTION LATER IN LIFE.

Perhaps you will be blessed with a long and happy life without the need for an unexpected hospital visit. Nevertheless, hospitals provide all levels of care, from simple day procedures to emergency treatments, intensive care, and of course, the more desirable ones — labor and delivery. It’s likely that at some point in your life, you will need a good hospital, and knowing how to choose one is knowledge worth having.

In most cases, one chooses a doctor first, and the doctor determines which hospital a patient attends because they have privileges in that facility. Some doctors, however, practice in many hospitals, and in some situations, you may choose the hospital instead of the doctor. If you reside in a decent-sized city, you probably have several hospitals from which to choose. Some are known for cardiac care, while others have cancer specialization, neonatal units, or other specialties. Matching the hospital’s specialty with your need can be the first step.

For general care, consider the hospital’s locale and convenience. Some hospitals may not provide everything you need, so call in advance and fi nd out the specific policies, procedures, and treatments they offer. If you expect a long-term stay, know the visiting hours as well as the room accommodations. Find out what your insurance covers so you aren’t faced with any unexpected situations or charges.

There are several details to consider when selecting a hospital. Consumer Reports rates hospitals with useful criteria that you might also pay attention to, such as patient experience, patient outcomes, hospital practices, safety, and avoiding adverse effects. You can investigate how local hospitals perform in these categories online or call them up and ask some questions. Hospital ratings can help you form an idea about what’s in store.

While investigating local hospitals is of critical importance, it never hurts to look at some nationally recognized hospitals as models

so you can better understand what highly regarded hospitals look like. What features, services, accolades, and achievements do they have? Does the hospital you’re considering have similar achievements? Do they elicit knowing and confident comments from people who have visited them, or are there more hesitant comments than statements of praise? Depending on your condition, only certain hospitals may be best equipped to deal with it. Find out which hospital has the best reputation for dealing with the issue you plan to have treated and do your best to understand why especially in comparison to other options.

Though a hospital visit is not necessarily something one looks forward to, it is usually necessary at some point in life. Knowing what the hospitals in your area offer and how they rate overall can be advantageous to not only your experience but your health. After all, a hospital is more than just a building — it’s the comfort that knowing you’ve got one selected already can provide.

“Your pain doctor should take time to hear your story, evaluate you completely, review with you all the available imagery, explain your diagnosis in words you understand and answer any questions you may have. ey should work with you to develop a multi-disciplinary treatment plan that is customized to you, to achieve your individual goals.”

Dr. Jason Butler

REGENCY PAIN & THERAPY INSTITUTE

A PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM CHRONIC PAIN IN TEXAS AND THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES IS INCREDIBLE — 100 MILLION NATIONWIDE. THAT MEANS 1 IN 3 AMERICANS CURRENTLY HAVE THIS CONDITION.

Unfortunately, pain often goes untreated. Neglecting to relieve it can poorly impact the immune system. If the pain results from tissue damage, it will heal more slowly if the pain is not mitigated. Unaddressed pain can also make it more challenging to cope with stress, chemotherapy, and surgery. As with any healthcare field, the quality of care you receive will differ from one pain management provider to another. However, knowing how to evaluate clinics will lead you to a team you can trust.

Your doctor should be board-certified and have received specialized training in pain management. Check if the clinic’s doctors are members of organizations such as the Texas Pain Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, or the Society for Pain Practice Management.

Another straightforward way to find a highquality clinic is by getting a referral from your general physician or specialist. You may also be able to get a strong recommendation from a hospital or general health clinic in your

area. A pain support group could provide a referral as well, as could friends or family.

Check online reviews. Ask the clinic if you can speak with current or past patients about the care they received at the clinic. Some clinics are niche focused on specific types of pain. Be sure your doctor has expertise with your specific condition.

If a clinic runs a pain support group, that is a good sign. These groups can be helpful for referrals, and emotional support since that part of pain is so significant. Pain experts believe so strongly about the emotional aspect that the International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience.”

Find out about the therapies offered through the clinic, which may be diverse, given that today’s standard approach to pain management is multidisciplinary — combining various medical, conventional, and alternative specialties into the approach. Clinics that are primarily focused on narcotic pain relief should receive extra attention since

these medications have many side effects and can lead to addiction. Pharmaceutical drugs can also have negative interactions with other medicines you may already be taking. If your doctor does prescribe medication, it should be in combination with physical therapy, rehabilitation, massage therapy, chiropractic, mental healthcare, and other modalities.

The selection of a chronic pain clinic continues through the initial appointment. You should feel comfortable with the doctor. They should not be focused on the pain but on you. Understand the treatment plan. The doctors should be able to customize a plan that is directed toward meeting your objectives. They should communicate with you throughout the process and track your recovery closely.

Chronic pain is a common health issue, and addressing it is critical to immediate and long-term health. Selecting the right pain management center is challenging, but stepby-step assessment upfront can lead you to a healthcare relationship you can trust.

“Don't let pain hold you back from doing the things you enjoy in life. Call today to schedule a consultation and discover how the Regency team can help you on your personal journey to wellness.”

Regency Pain & Therapy Institute is consistently recognized for its outstanding team of doctors and amazing support staff. With years of combined experience, they strive to provide the highest standards of care and service throughout the treatment process while offering patients support and encouragement every step of the way. Their focus is on providing patients with a one-stop-shop for treating pain including patient education, medications, physical therapy, injections, and various procedures -- all under one roof.

Because each patient is unique, care is tailored, highly personal, and centered around the patient, their well-being, and their individual needs and preferences. Conditions routinely treated include:

AN ORTHODONTIST

“In 2026 Hildebrand Orthodontics wants to give back to Arlington and is brining back ‘A ordable Braces’. With accepting ALL insurances and o ering 12 month braces for $2967 he is donating his services to improve the lives of those in the community where the practice has been established for 25 years in the same location on Hwy I-20 just south of Cooper.”

DO YOU RESIST SMILING EVEN WHEN YOU’RE HAPPY OR COVER YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU LAUGH BECAUSE YOU’RE SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT YOUR TEETH? YOU’RE NOT ALONE.

The American Board of Orthodontists reports that one in five orthodontic patients in the U.S. today are adults. And a showstopping smile is only part of the reason. Because overcrowded or misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean, having your teeth appropriately aligned by an orthodontist can help head off potentially life-threatening health conditions caused by bacteria entering the body from tooth decay and gum disease. It can also stave off TMJ and help your mouth, teeth, and jaw function properly.

An excellent place to begin your search for an orthodontist is by asking your general dentist or primary care physician for recommendations. You can also visit The American Association of Orthodontists website at aaoinfo.org/locator for a list of orthodontists in your area who have completed the extra 2-3 years of education after dental school to become a specialist in orthodontics.

And, of course, your friends and family may have a lot to say about orthodontists

they’ve encountered. Try asking people who are currently in treatment. Ask them how they’re treated by the doctor and staff. Have they encountered any problems? Have the procedures and treatment been explained well? Are they comfortable with the price they’re paying?

Once you’ve collected a few recommendations, take the time to interview potential orthodontists. Find out how many orthodontists work in the office. Would you see the same one each time? Undergo an initial exam and ask for their recommendations. Ask about the process. How long will the entire treatment take? How often will you need to visit the office, and how long will each office visit last? Why are they recommending the treatment plan they’re recommending? Do they have 3D software to show you your result before treatment is begun?

Because you’ll be required to make multiple visits to the office, location is important, as are the traffic patterns and location of the office. You want an office that’s close to home

or work, with easy access so that you can be in and out in a reasonable time. Find out how long an average wait time will be. Ask the orthodontist how long they’ve been practicing and how many other adults they’re treating.

Now it’s time to talk money. Get a price on your treatment and be clear about what it covers. Will there be additional fees during the treatment? What follow-up care, such as retainers, will be required after the braces, and what is the expected cost of those? What insurance plans do they accept? You can even ask for referrals and call a few current patients.

By adequately vetting the orthodontist and paying close attention to the overall vibe of the office, friendliness, and knowledge of the staff, and the doctor’s track record, you can find the right orthodontist and the right office to start you on your road to a beautiful and fully functioning smile.

how to CHOOSE

A PLASTIC SURGEON

“Patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction are of the utmost importance as well as getting to know each patient and taking time to listen and answer their questions and concerns. Understanding that each patient’s cosmetic and health goals are as unique as they are.”

Y. Anthony Nakamura, MD, FACS,PA ACCENT ON YOU

IF YOU’RE SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT A PART OF YOUR APPEARANCE, YOUR BEST COURSE OF ACTION MAY BE TO SEEK A QUALIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON. FINDING THE RIGHT ONE MIGHT TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF RESEARCH, BUT IT WILL SERVE AS AN ESSENTIAL STEP IN A PROCESS THAT IDEALLY LEAVES YOU FEELING MORE COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT IN YOUR SKIN.

Make sure the plastic surgeon you choose is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is a “must-do” item on your to-do list for your safety. To become board certified, a doctor must complete three to five years of training in general surgery and a minimum of two to three years of training in plastic surgery and take written and oral tests. Check the American Board of Medical Specialties’ website or the ABPS’s website to see if a plastic surgeon is board certified. Recommendations and word of mouth are always excellent ways to fi nd services. Ask your friends and family, your doctors, or others you trust for plastic surgeon referrals. These days, many patients also look to online reviews or social media as their

primary source of information about plastic surgeons. Just take what you read with a bit of skepticism and criticism, especially from anonymous sources.

Some plastic surgeons specialize in particular procedures. When choosing a plastic surgeon, try to fi nd one that focuses on the type of procedure you want. It should at least be in their “top three.” The plastic surgeon should have performed this type of procedure once or more per week, preferably for five years or more. That way, you can know you’re in qualified hands.

Treat the fi rst consultation with a plastic surgeon like a job interview. Come prepared with questions about the procedure, recovery

time, costs and fees, and the plastic surgeon’s specialties. During the consultation, pay attention to important details, such as the cleanliness of the office and the plastic surgeon’s bedside manner and attentiveness to your questions and concerns. Perhaps most important, pay attention to your gut feelings. Ask to review before and after photos, and make sure the after images are several months post-procedure.

Don’t rush into a decision. Take your time to talk to multiple plastic surgeons to ensure you’re choosing the right one for you and the procedure you want. Even after you select a plastic surgeon, it is best to take the time to make sure you and the plastic surgeon are on the same page about your needs.

A PODIATRIST

“Our feet can directly a ect our overall health and lead to serious problems. If you are experiencing foot and ankle, contact a podiatrist who is dedicated to treating the root cause of your problems -not just the symptoms.”

Dharmesh Bhakta, DPM, FACFAS ACCENT PODIATRY

“THESE

BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING, AND THAT’S JUST WHAT THEY’LL DO,” UNLESS THE FEET INSIDE ARE SUFFERING — THEN THE BOOTS EITHER STAY IN THE CLOSET OR MOVE SLOWLY IN SHORT STRIDES.

Painful, uncomfortable, irritated feet are problematic and require immediate attention. In some cases, minor foot pain can be addressed by a primary care physician. Other times, a foot specialist, known as a podiatrist, is required. While selecting a podiatrist may initially seem straightforward, many specialties and sub-specialties exist. In most cases, your primary care physician will assess your need and steer you in the right direction but being well informed during the process doesn’t hurt.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, “Feet are complex anatomical structures, all-in-one stabilizers, shock absorbers, and propulsion engines that are instrumental to overall health and wellbeing.” Since feet require the care of specialists specifically trained to treat them, you should make sure you look for a highly qualified Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). DPMs have completed years of study and training of the foot and ankle through podiatric medical school and training via residency. In

choosing a podiatrist, understand some focus on sports injuries, age-related degeneration, conditions affected by diabetes, work injuries, and others. Is your issue something minor in need of a short-term solution, or will your situation require repeat visits or perhaps even physical therapy?

Foot and ankle problems can stem from various root causes such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and vein disease. Make sure to understand what’s happening with your feet and ankles and find a specialist who understands the cause and doesn’t just treat the symptom. Other issues include arthritis, injuries, skin disorders, nerve damage, muscle and tendon issues, toe or toenail problems, and joint conditions. Ask questions and do your best to get a complete picture of your affl iction. Don’t hesitate to do your own research.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options for a podiatrist that fits your needs, look at online reviews and check the American Podiatric

Medical Association website (APMA.org) for more information. Your feet need to last a lifetime, so preventative care is essential as well. Choose properly fitting shoes and avoid those that don’t offer stability and comfort. If pedicures are among your must-haves, select a place known for its cleanliness, one that uses disposable liners in the foot wash. If you have children, be aware their feet can grow a half size in just a few short months, so frequently check their shoe fit. Don’t wear closed-toe, tight-fitting shoes without socks, and make sure to keep shoes clean and adequately aired.

Your feet are your foundation, and while it may be easy to overlook them, make it a priority to include routine care and maintenance before they demand it! And if you find yourself in need of a podiatrist, many excellent resources are available to help in your selection. Use the tips above to get started, and you’ll be on your way to successful treatment.

A COSMETIC DENTIST

“If you don’t have the smile you desire, you may bene t from dental implants, crowns, or porcelain veneers, contact a cosmetic dentist who has years of experience and a gallery of before and after photos so you can see for yourself what a di erence a beautiful smile can make.”

Dr. John Bauer

MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY

FAMILY, GENERAL, AND RESTORATIVE DENTISTS PROVIDE TREATMENT THAT IS NECESSARY FOR ORAL HEALTH, WHILE THE WORK PERFORMED BY COSMETIC DENTISTS IS ELECTIVE.

Cosmetic dentists improve the appearance of your smile. This field of dentistry offers a range of strategies to boost your aesthetics. Cosmetic dentists can reshape teeth that have been worn down or are otherwise abnormal. They can straighten teeth that are crooked and restore ones that are damaged. They can replace teeth that are missing with dentures, bridges, crowns, and implants. Whitening is also a common practice. Visiting a cosmetic dentist can improve your appearance and serve as a great confidence booster.

Before you get down to business, you have to determine the specific professional who will treat you.

Check the track record and qualifications of the dentist. You could get that information through their website or over the phone. You want to know how long the practice has been open. You also want to know that the dentist has training in cosmetic dentistry as a specialty. One prominent way

dentists can indicate this training is through American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) accreditation.

Verify that the practice has up-to-date technologies to perform procedures. Depending on your needs and level of anxiety related to seeing the dentist, it can be a good idea to find out what patient comforts the practice provides. Options may include sedation, spa services, easy chairs, and headphones with serene music.

Get before-and-after photographs of past patients who have received the same type of treatment from the dentist. Get referrals. One simple way to connect with a strong cosmetic dentist is through a referral from your current dentist. Your general dentist will be aware of your dental health history. Your primary dentist is not just helpful for a referral, but they can also advise you to see other specialists (such as orthodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, periodontists,

or oral maxillofacial surgeons) before you receive cosmetic care. The dentist can also recommend a professional they trust. However, if you want to go beyond your dentist for advice, you can ask coworkers, neighbors, or friends about any cosmetic dentist they endorse.

Do your own research. You can look through databases run by local, state, or national organizations. The American Dental Association has a database organized by specialty. You can also check the record of your potential dentist with the state licensing body, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE), which has key licensee information available online.

There are a variety of reasons that people visit cosmetic dentists. With the above information, you can conduct a thoughtful selection process that guides you toward someone you can trust with your smile.

A BARIATRIC SURGEON

“Once you’ve decided bariatric surgery is the next step in our weight loss journey, nding the right bariatric surgeon is essential in helping you reach your goal. As with any surgery, you want a professional with a record of good outcomes and positive patient experiences. Look for a surgeon who listens to you and takes time to understand your goals.”

TODAY, 7 IN 10 AMERICANS ARE EITHER OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE. FOR MANY, TRADITIONAL METHODS OF LOSING WEIGHT — IMPROVED DIET AND MORE EXERCISE — SIMPLY DON’T WORK.

If that’s true for you, perhaps bariatric surgery is a logical option. You should consider yourself a candidate for bariatric surgery if you have a BMI (body mass index) over 40 or you have a BMI of 35 with a serious health problem directly related to obesity such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea.

The first step in bariatric surgery is choosing the surgeon who will be by your side during this life-changing experience, and there are several things to consider when choosing the one who’s right for you.

Insurance deserves serious attention. Many insurance companies will provide a list of surgeons that they cover in your area. Or a company may stipulate that the surgeon has specific qualifications and certifications to cover the surgery.

Beyond insurance, another vital consideration is the type of surgery that the surgeon performs. Two of the more common types

are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery. The surgeon can perform each of these operations using either the traditional open-incision laparotomy technique and potentially fewer complications.

You need to consider a surgeon’s qualifications. Is the surgeon board-certified by either the American Board of Surgery or the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery? Certification by either indicates that the bariatric surgeon has completed a training program and met certain predefined standards. It also ensures they have passed both oral and written exams. Recertification is required every 10 years.

Beyond board certification, it’s helpful to know how many surgeries the bariatric specialist has performed as there is a direct relationship between the number of surgeries and the risk of complications. It’s not unusual to expect that the more surgeries the doctor has performed, the fewer patients

will experience complications, owing to the doctor’s increased familiarity with the procedure. Th is is certainly one of the most important factors to consider when choosing your bariatric surgeon.

You also need to ask about the support services available following surgery. Follow-up care is extremely important, and the center should support such things as psychological counseling, physical therapy, and nutrition guidance to help manage your new dietary regiment and eating habits.

Finally, while there are many things to consider in choosing your bariatric surgeon, there is also one important question to ask yourself: Do you like them? You should be able to build a relaxed rapport with the surgeon, and if you don’t feel comfortable asking questions, they’re probably not the surgeon for you, whatever their qualifications. Trust your instincts, and if you feel uncomfortable, keep looking.

A UROLOGIST

“Every year in this country, millions of men, women, and children visit a urologist for conditions that a ect their urinary and reproductive systems. Considering the critical importance of urologic health, a lot rests on selecting the right urologist for your needs so you can feel con dent in their urology care provider.”

James Kelley, DO TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY

A UROLOGIST IS A PHYSICIAN WHO SPECIALIZES IN TREATING, BOTH MEDICALLY AND SURGICALLY, PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE URINARY TRACT, INCLUDING THE BLADDER, KIDNEYS, AND URETHRA.

Urologists treat men and women for urinary diseases, and they treat men for infertility and sexual dysfunction. Kidney stones, prostate cancer, and stress urinary incontinence are also among the diseases and disorders that urologists often treat. Some urologists specialize further in infertility and sexual dysfunction, a subspecialty that includes the use of prosthetics and implants. If you’re dealing with any of these situations, a urologist is probably the specialist you need to see.

If you’re looking for a urologist, the chances are that your primary care physician has recommended that you see one. A urologist will guide you through many decisions about protecting your urinary tract health or treating a urinary tract disease, disorder, or condition. To assist you in your search, we offer some considerations to keep in mind.

Begin by seeking referrals, fi rst from your primary care physician. You can also ask family, friends, and work colleagues for their recommendations.

Take the time to research the doctor’s credentials and experience online, including medical school, training hospital, and board certification.

In the office, don’t be afraid to ask questions. For example, if you know you’re going to need a specific procedure, ask the urologist how many of these they have performed and find out about the risk of complications.

Gender is another consideration, both theirs and yours. It’s important to feel comfortable with your urologist’s gender, as you will need to discuss some very personal information. Urologists may specialize in male and/or female-related urologic conditions. Your questions should include those about his or her recent training and experience specifically related to your condition or your gender.

When you first meet, ask questions and see how they respond. Do they welcome your questions and answer in ways you can understand? Find a urologist who shows an interest in getting to know you and will

consider your treatment preferences and respect your decisions.

If your condition requires surgery outside the urologist’s office, research hospital quality. Your doctor’s hospital will now be your hospital and hospital quality matters. Patients at top-rated hospitals have fewer complications and better survival rates. Also, consider how convenient the hospital is to you, especially if you have to return for frequent treatment or tests.

Review patient surveys online, but don’t be unduly influenced by one or two disgruntled patients. Used judiciously, you can learn a lot from these, especially wait time, office environment, and friendliness.

Finally, don’t overlook insurance. To minimize your out-of-pocket expenses, you want a urologist who participates in your plan, still keeping in mind their credentials and experience and the quality of the hospital care you may need.

A MED SPA

A med spa is a hybrid between a medical clinic and a day spa (“medical spa”), typically operating under the supervision of a doctor or medical director and treating conditions on your body and face, such as laser hair removal, tattoo removal, photo facials, body contouring, permanent fat reduction treatments, injections like Botox and dermal fillers, chemical peels, skin tightening, and rejuvenation. Non-surgical day spa procedures are less invasive than plastic surgery and don’t involve the same level of complexity. But it’s still important to thoroughly vet potential med spas to ensure your treatment is performed safely and in a manner that delivers the results you desire.

Look for a med spa with extensive experience performing the specific treatment you want. You can gather names of potential spas online or from friends and local publications. Once you have some promising candidates, browse online reviews. Keep in mind there will always be complainers. Look for an overall pattern of satisfaction from the clients, especially those who’ve had the same procedure you are looking for.

Go ahead and book an initial consultation at a few locations and make a list of pros and cons. At each facility, inquire who will be performing your procedure and how much experience they have with that particular treatment. How long have they been doing it, and how many do they perform each month? What are their credentials? You want your procedure performed by someone with the proper training, licensing, background, and experience. Ask to see some before and after photos.

Ask questions about your procedure and what you can expect. Discuss your desired goals from the treatment. Ask for a tour of the facility and assess the cleanliness. Ask about the technology used for your procedure. Take the opportunity to talk to as many staff members as possible. Do they seem knowledgeable and professional? You want to feel comfortable with the entire practice, not just the person performing your procedure.

Med spa treatments and technology change rapidly. You want a facility with the latest

“A quality provider takes time to understand your goals, health history, and lifestyle before recommending anything. I believe the most meaningful transformations happen when treatment plans are personalized, intentional, and rooted in overall wellbeing. It’s about supporting the whole person, not just a single goal.”

Kelli Vickrey R&R AESTHETICS + WELLNESS

technology and a commitment to continuing education. Take notes on their technology so you can do some research to see if they’re using the most up-to-date, least invasive technologies available.

Ask how many treatments it should take to see the results you want. Of course, individual results will differ. Some clients may see results after one treatment, while others need several sessions for the results they desire. They should give you an average expected treatment period, though, and shouldn’t pressure you into having additional services you don’t want. If you’re feeling pressured to sign up for treatments you don’t think you need, seek a second opinion.

The best way to find the ideal med spa is to identify your issues and see which med spas offer those treatments in your area. Then, investigate the above points to see who stacks up and where you feel more comfortable and welcome. At the end of the day, trust your instinct to choose the med spa that will be best for you.

YOU PROBABLY HEAR THE TERM “MED SPA” MORE AND MORE, BUT WHAT MAKES A MED SPA UNIQUE?

At R&R Aesthetics + Wellness, you will meet a committed group of women who share a common goal of empowering and assisting you in achieving inner and outer radiance.

AN URGENT CARE FACILITY

“When choosing an urgent care facility, nd out how long it’s been in operation and how long the providers have been practicing there. Longevity means they are familiar with you and your family. Also, a facility that has two providers per shift allows them to spend more time with you and o ers the patients more choices, such as a male or female provider.”

Je ery Fisher, MD

MANSFIELD URGENT CARE & FAMILY MEDICINE

WHEN WE HAVE AN URGENT BUT NON-CRITICAL NEED FOR CARE, AN URGENT CARE FACILITY MAY BE THE BEST CHOICE. TERMS SUCH AS CONVENIENT, IMMEDIATE, URGENT, AND WALK-IN CARE ALL REFER TO THIS CLASS OF MEDICAL FACILITY. THEY’RE DESIGNED TO SERVE PEOPLE WHOSE HEALTHCARE NEEDS RANGE BETWEEN ILLNESSES, ACHES, AND EMERGENCIES SUCH AS THREATS TO LIFE, LIMB, OR EYESIGHT THAT WE USUALLY ASSOCIATE WITH AN AMBULANCE RIDE TO A TRADITIONAL HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM.

The challenge is in choosing the right one. A facility’s proximity is key when you or a loved one is suffering from, say, an unusually high fever or a kitchen knife accident, but there is more to consider than drive time. It’s a good idea to put a moment’s thought into where you might turn for help in the event of a non-life-threatening emergency. Waiting to choose the right facility until you’re in need of immediate attention could turn the decision into a frantic Google Maps drill with uncertain results.

So how do we choose during normal moments of peace and quiet what we won’t want to take precious time to research when our health and safety may be at risk? Accreditations are a good place to start. According to the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), there are two criteria by which urgent care

facilities are recognized. The first is the USAOA Accreditation Program. The other certification program recognized by the UCAOA is the Certified Urgent Care (CUC) program. The CUC is used to recognize urgent care facilities that meet all the criteria that are standard in the United States for demonstrating an urgent care facility’s accessibility to all patients, the capability of the staff to treat a wide range of injuries and illnesses, and the clinic’s capacity to respond to an outbreak of disease in the local community.

These facilities operate with a sense of, yes, urgency. It’s for this reason that it might take a few tries to pin a person down on the phone long enough to get the details. With a little patience and an extra portion of politeness, you can find someone with a few free

minutes to provide you with the answers you’re looking for.

To start with, ask about the certifications mentioned in this article. You might also inquire about services a clinic provides above and beyond primary care, such as occupational, physical, or weight-loss therapy. Ask about standard rates, supported insurance programs, average wait times, and if they have any limitations on care that’s provided. If you get a moment, check them out in person and get a feel for what the process looks like.

An urgent care facility can be a nice alternative to a preplanned appointment with a doctor or a more involved trip to the ER. Make sure you have one in mind in case somebody has an exceptionally bad day.

A VASCULAR AND VEIN SPECIALIST

VASCULAR SPECIALISTS ARE SPECIFICALLY TRAINED TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT VASCULAR CONDITIONS SUCH AS VARICOSE VEINS, AORTIC ANEURYSMS, CAROTID ARTERY DISEASE, DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS, AND PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (PAD).

Of course, any time you choose a doctor to trust, the decision is important. But when dealing with the health of your veins, finding a vascular specialist who’s knowledgeable, confident, skilled, and capable is vital to your future health. While you can see your primary care doctor for vein-related issues, a vascular and vein specialist is someone who’s dedicated their life to specifically treating venous health concerns and will know much more about venous insufficiency than a general practitioner.

Once you decide you want to take your condition to a vein specialist, you might go a step further and search for a specialized vascular surgeon who is a specialist with the knowledge to diagnose your specific problem and the understanding of the optimum treatment available to correct it. While there are now many viable, non-invasive

treatment options, there’s no one-size-fitsall solution. The doctor you choose should be committed to taking adequate time and conducting extensive testing to develop the best treatment plan for your unique venous insufficiency.

Begin by asking your primary care physician for referrals. You can also ask family and friends about experiences they’ve had with local vein specialists. Then check that your insurance covers the specialist they recommend. Read some online reviews and visit some websites. Look to see if the specialists you’re considering are boardcertified or fellowship-trained, which tells you they’ve gone beyond the basic schooling and are accountable to a higher standard of care.

After that, it’ll be time to visit some clinics. Because treatment can be stressful, look for

a comfortable office with a staff that makes you feel welcome and at home. Ask how they’ll analyze your condition. What diagnostic equipment will they use and why? How will they determine the best treatment for your unique case? The specialist should take the proper time to run tests and discuss your symptoms with you at length.

Look for a specialist who’s committed to exploring all non-invasive options before discussing surgery.

Seeing a specialist about your venous health concerns should be a productive, comfortable process that ends in the best results possible for you. Take the proper time now to find a specialist who’ll deliver the venous treatment you need and deserve.

A COSMETIC SURGEON

“Cosmetic surgery is more than my profession. It is an artistic craft that I enjoy performing and re ected in every patient experience.”

WITH MODERN ADVANCEMENTS IN COSMETIC SURGERY, IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE NATURAL LOOKING RESULTS THAT RESTORE BALANCE, REFINE YOUR NATURAL FEATURES, AND IMPROVE OVERALL PROPORTIONS. WHETHER CONSIDERING SUBTLE FACIAL REJUVENATION OR A MORE COMPREHENSIVE TRANSFORMATION, SUCH AS A MOMMY MAKEOVER, COSMETIC SURGERY OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF PERSONALIZED POSSIBILITIES. CHOOSING THE RIGHT COSMETIC SURGEON BEGINS WITH UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS AND SELECTING A SURGEON WHO PRIORITIZES SAFETY, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALITY CARE.

First, schedule a consultation with a qualified, experienced, and board-certified cosmetic surgeon. Board certification in cosmetic surgery signifies that the surgeon has completed an approved surgical residency and has successfully completed an additional accredited fellowship in cosmetic surgery. In addition, they have passed comprehensive written and oral examinations, thus demonstrating their expertise, skill, and proficiency in cosmetic surgery. These are essential steps in providing safe and effective patient care.

Cosmetic surgery requires unique skills and distinctive knowledge. Therefore, choosing a surgeon certified by a reputable board, such as the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, is advisable. Diplomates of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery must complete an advanced twelve-month fellowship devoted exclusively to cosmetic surgery, where the surgeon receives comprehensive training in facial plastic surgery, breast rejuvenation, body contouring, and non-surgical aesthetic surgery.

In addition, the cosmetic surgeon’s experience with the specific procedures you are considering is vital, as each area of cosmetic surgery requires different skills. Ask the surgeon about their experience, how many years they have been performing the procedure, and how frequently they perform it.

Your perception of beauty may differ from others, so it is equally important to choose a cosmetic surgeon whose aesthetic sense aligns with your goals. Review the surgeon’s before and after photographs of previous patients, especially those with similar physical characteristics. Th is will give you a better understanding of the surgeon’s work and whether their style matches your aesthetic expectations.

Ask your cosmetic surgeon where your surgical procedures will be performed and whether the facility is properly accredited. Procedures may take place in a hospital, an outpatient surgery center, or a private office. To receive accreditation, a facility must adhere to strict standards related to personnel, sanitation, emergency equipment, patient

care, anesthesia services, and inspections. Look for nationally recognized accreditation organizations, including AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO. A qualified cosmetic surgeon will openly discuss facility accreditation as a reflection of their commitment to safety and quality care.

Lastly, the attitude and professionalism of the office staff are important considerations when choosing a cosmetic surgeon. Friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff contribute to a more comfortable experience. During your consultation, you should receive clear information and transparent discussion regarding expectations and fees.

In summary, cosmetic surgery offers transformative possibilities, and the key to success lies in choosing the right cosmetic surgeon. Look for board certification as an indicator of expertise and commitment to safety. Consider the surgeon’s experience, aesthetic alignment with your goals, and the accreditation of the surgical facility. Ultimately, the right choice helps ensure a safe, comfortable journey toward achieving your desired physical and aesthetic outcomes.

A PSYCHIATRIST

MOST OF US WILL EXPERIENCE SOME FORM OF MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLE IN OUR LIFETIME. IT MIGHT TAKE THE FORM OF DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, OR CHANGES IN THINKING, BEHAVIOR, OR EMOTIONS, THAT MAKE DAILY LIFE DIFFICULT. GREAT STRIDES HAVE BEEN MADE IN REMOVING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH AND OUR GENERATION IS MUCH MORE LIKELY THAN WERE OUR PARENTS TO TALK OPENLY ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES AND CHALLENGES. WITH THIS GENERATIONAL SHIFT HAS COME KNOWLEDGE, ACCEPTANCE, AND OPENNESS IN TALKING ABOUT AND SEEKING OUT MENTAL HEALTHCARE AND MENTAL-HEALTH PROVIDERS.

But where should you begin your search for a mental-health provider that’s right for you? Variables to consider include communication style, areas of specialty, patient reviews, and insurance. Begin by considering what’s important to you. An eminently-accredited and experienced psychiatrist still may not offer the connection you need from a mental health professional.

While mental health is becoming more mainstream, it can still be challenging to talk openly and candidly with another person. But the right professional can make it feel easier, even natural. Consider whether you’d feel more comfortable with someone your own age and sex or whether you’d be more comfortable with someone older and of the opposite sex.

By asking your primary care provider for psychiatrists and clinics they recommend. Visit your insurance provider’s website

for a list of psychiatrists who accept your insurance. Ask friends, family, and coworkers you feel comfortable asking who they recommend. Visit the websites of psychiatrists they suggest to see whether they have more experience in treating certain subspecialties such as substance use and addiction, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADD/ ADHD, or insomnia. Or they may focus on a certain population such as adolescent, adult, or geriatrics. Look into each providers’ education, certification, and experience with the type of condition you face. Do they offer telehealth should you need it?

While you don’t want to take every online review to heart, reading a cross section of patient reviews can paint a picture of the way the provider practices. Do patients seem happy overall with the provider and the culture of their office or clinic?

Once you have some qualified candidates, it really helps to meet them and see whether the two of you “jive”. Come prepared with a list of questions and considerations. Building a relationship with your psychiatrist can take time, of course, but an initial consultation can give you a feel for their communication style. Are their responses to your questions easy to understand? Do they seem to understand you and your concerns? Do they show you respect and do they seem to have your best interest at heart. Ask how many people with your condition they’ve successfully treated and what treatments were most successful. Are they able to prescribe medication should you need it? Will they bill your insurance company directly, or will you pay them and submit for reimbursement? Taking the steps to find the right psychiatrist is an investment in your future mental wellbeing. Do your homework now and reap the benefits for years to come.

HABITS TO START 2026 STRONG

Reset

It’s January 2026, and you’re not vowing to “do better” only to crash in a couple of weeks. Forget the all-or-nothing resolutions. Instead, you’re energized, focused, and seeking habits that can stick.

Stack Small Wins

Are you ready to rewire your brain for a year of thriving?

Here’s your blueprint for a 30-day reset that creates small wins and leverages the habit loop — cue, routine, reward. It offers approachable, evidence-based habits, one per week, with a bonus integration day.

Week 1: Claim Your Sleep Sanctuary

Sleep is your superpower. Aim for seven to nine uninterrupted hours nightly. Create a wind-down ritual that includes dim lights, which helps signal your body that it’s time to relax.

Avoid using electronic screens an hour before bed. Instead, try listening to a relaxing audio or reading a physical book or a magazine. Practice meditation or deep breathing exercises. Listen to calming music or a podcast to help you unwind.

Quality sleep helps regulate stress hormones, boosts memory, and can even fortify immunity. During your 30-day reset, log bedtime and wake-up times. By day seven, you should wake refreshed, not wrecked.

Week 2: Move with Momentum

Start with 30 minutes of joyful movement daily — brisk walks, yoga flows, Tai Chi, Qigong, or dance breaks. Adding resistance training twice a week builds muscle magic.

Exercise floods your brain with endorphins, combats depression, and extends lifespan by up to seven years, according to landmark Harvard research.

Track steps or sessions in an app and reward yourself with a healthy post-move treat. Over the course of 30 days, this builds a “movement identity,” turning “I should” into “I am.” Your body will thank you with boosted energy.

Week 3: Nourish with Intention

Nutrition science is clear — antioxidant-rich meals stabilize blood sugar, enhance focus, and lower inflammation, reducing chronic disease risk by 20-30%.

Swap processed foods for colorful, whole foods. Focus on veggies, fresh fruits, lean proteins, and fiber-rich grains. Try “eating the rainbow” daily and hydrate with eight glasses of water. Savor each bite mindfully to curb overeating. By month’s end, your body will crave greens and other healthy foods over those that are highly processed.

Week 4: Cultivate Calm

Carve out 10 minutes daily for mindfulness. No lotus pose is required. Just sit and observe thoughts without judgment. Studies show this slashes anxiety by up to 30% and can improve sleep quality in just weeks.

Use guided apps or practice controlled breathwork. Try anchoring this post-exercise for synergy. Feel the shift? Your mind becomes a sanctuary, not a storm.

Bonus Days 29-30: Weave in Gratitude

Cap your reset with journaling. Write about three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude isn’t fluff — it’s a neural booster that enhances emotional resilience, sleep, and even heart health, as UCLA research reveals.

BREAKTHROUGH SKINCARE INGREDIENTS THAT DELIVER RESULTS

Tired of skincare products that promise the moon but don’t deliver? In 2026, skincare isn’t about more; it’s about smarter, with breakthroughs rooted in biotechnology and dermatology rather than hype. Here are a few of the innovations reshaping the skincare landscape.

Tranexamic Acid. Typically found in topical creams, serums, or lotions, this hyperpigmentation hero steals the spotlight by blocking melanin overproduction to fade dark spots, melasma, and post-acne marks without irritating sensitive skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce redness and flushing associated with rosacea. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology showed that 3% topical use reduced pigmentation by 49% over 4 weeks, outperforming hydroquinone for some users.

Copper Peptides. This antiaging powerhouse mimics your skin’s natural repair signals, stimulating collagen and elastin production, to smooth wrinkles and firm sallow skin. Clinical data from a 2023 Cosmetics review revealed a 70% boost in collagen after eight weeks, with users noticing plumper cheeks and fewer crow’s feet.

Pro tip: Ideal for night serums, copper peptides are generally considered gentler than retinol, making them a good choice for people with sensitive skin.

Polyglutamic Acid (PGA). For nextlevel skin hydration, meet hyaluronic acid’s overachieving cousin. This non-greasy fermented biotech wonder holds more moisture than hyaluronic acid, creating a powerful plumping effect. PGA also boosts skin elasticity and reinforces the skin barrier against environmental stressors.

A Freelance Formulations analysis revealed that PGA enhanced elasticity by 20% in trials, turning dry, flaky complexions into dewy masterpieces. Layer it under moisturizer for that “just back from vacation” look.

Pro tip: Both are powerful humectants, PGA and hyaluronic acid work differently and may be used together for maximum hydration.

Centella Asiatica (Cica).

This soothing, plant-based superstar from Korean skincare lore is now biotech-boosted due to advancements in extraction methods.

Packed with antioxidants and madecassoside (a natural compound extracted from the plant, also known as Gotu Kola or Tiger Grass) it calms inflammation and rosacea, heals skin barriers, and can reduce the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

Exosomes. Derived from plants or stem cells, these tiny messengers released by cells shuttle growth factors to spark repair, boosting collagen by up to 30% in four weeks, per early 2025 trials. They also promote skin cell renewal and reduce inflammation.

Topical exosomes support skin repair and regeneration, enhancing elasticity, smoothness, and radiance. When delivered deeper into the skin during procedures such as microneedling, they may work more intensively.

Malassezin. Considered gentler than Vitamin C, Malassezin, a naturally occurring molecule found on the skin, helps reduce various types of hyperpigmentation, address acne marks, and brighten the skin.

Pro tip: Malassezin works in conjunction with retinol to enhance results while minimizing irritation, such as dryness and peeling, often associated with retinol use. Ask your skincare provider for more information.

Remember ye not e former ings, nei er consider e ings of old. Behold, I wi do a new ing; now it sha spring for ; sha ye not know it? I wi even make a way in e wilderness, and rivers in e desert.

New Hues

Design in 2026 is all about balance — tones that evoke calm, spaces that feel meaningful, and colors that offer both personality and ease. This year’s paint selections reflect a collective shift toward intentional living, with hues that connect to nature, heritage, and quiet sophistication. From moody browns to grounding greens and soft neutrals, the 2026 Colors of the Year invite homeowners to design with warmth, clarity, and confidence.

SHERWIN-WILLIAMS: UNIVERSAL KHAKI

Universal Khaki introduces a calming neutral that leans into simplicity with purpose. Its warm undertones give it a timeless feel, and its versatility allows it to pair beautifully with everything from modern metal fixtures to vintage wood finishes. As a backdrop, it encourages slower, more mindful design choices, creating rooms that feel restored and effortlessly welcoming.

BENJAMIN MOORE: SILHOUETTE

Silhouette channels quiet luxury with its espresso hue softened by charcoal undertones. Inspired by the renewed popularity of tailored, classic silhouettes in fashion, Silhouette adds depth and elegance without overpowering a space. It’s ideal for living rooms, moody dens, or dining rooms where you want a touch of drama with lasting warmth.

BEHR: HIDDEN GEM

Hidden Gem leads the palette with its smoky blend of blue and green, bringing depth without heaviness. This versatile shade feels grounded yet energizing, making it ideal for spaces that need a touch of character—think built-ins, bedrooms, or a welcoming front door. Its refined complexity makes a room feel curated but never fussy.

GLIDDEN: WARM MAHOGANY

Warm Mahogany brings a rich, heritage-inspired red to the lineup. Both bold and balanced, it adds instant intimacy to bedrooms, dining rooms, or reading nooks. The hue’s depth pairs beautifully with brass, natural wood, and layered textiles, making it a striking alternative to traditional accent colors. Its versatility allows it to be expressive without feeling overpowering.

DUTCH BOY: MELODIOUS IVORY

Melodious Ivory embodies the movement toward authenticity and comfort. This creamy beige offers a gentle glow, complementing natural fibers, timeworn woods, and handcrafted décor. It thrives in kitchens, bedrooms, sunrooms, and spaces that aim for an inviting, grounded feel. The shade’s soft warmth helps create rooms built for connection and everyday calm.

VALSPAR: WARM EUCALYPTUS

Warm Eucalyptus closes the palette with a softly muted green that feels restorative and serene. The warm undertones keep it from reading too cool, allowing it to function as a modern neutral. Whether used as a full-room shade or paired with warm metals and creamy whites, Warm Eucalyptus brings a tranquil, nature-forward presence to any interior.

Quick Tips for Planning a Great Texas Getaway

Go off-season. Want fewer crowds and better deals? Visit beach towns in spring or Hill Country in late fall.

Pack layers . Texas weather likes to surprise — bring a sweater even if it’s 80° when you leave. Book early . Many charming inns and boutique stays fill up fast on weekends — especially in wine country. Check for festivals . Nearly every town has a seasonal event, from wildflower trails to chili cook-offs.

Unplug. Some of the best spots (like Marfa or Wimberley) have spotty Wi-Fi — that’s part of the magic.

RING THE DINNER BELL WITH HEARTY BOWLS FOR CHILLY DAYS BY JENNIFER BAJSEL

CAULIFLOWER BISQUE

SERVINGS: 8 | PREP: 20 MIN. | COOK: 1 HR. | TOTAL: 1 HR. 20 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: 2 heads cauliflower | 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, divided | 1 medium yellow onion, diced | 2 garlic cloves, minced | 4 cups chicken broth | 1 cup heavy cream | Pinch of nutmeg | 1 Tbsp. Kosher salt | ¼ tsp. white pepper

DIRECTIONS: PREHEAT oven to 350° degrees. REMOVE green leaves from the head of the cauliflower. PLACE the cauliflower in a baking dish and add ½ inch of water to the bottom of the pan. COVER with foil and steam for 30 minutes. REMOVE the pan from the oven and drain the water. DRIZZLE the cauliflower with 1 Tbsp. olive oil and return it to the oven, uncovered, for 20 minutes, until golden brown. DICE the onion and mince the garlic while the cauliflower is in the oven. HEAT a stockpot on medium heat. ADD the remaining 1 Tbsp. of olive oil. ADD onion and garlic. SAUTÉ until softened. ADD chicken broth. KEEP some cauliflower florets for garnish. ADD the remaining cauliflower to the stock pot. USE an immersion blender to blend the soup until creamy. ADD heavy cream, nutmeg, salt, and white pepper. REDUCE the soup to a thick bisque texture.

TIPS & TRICKS: You can place the onion, garlic, and cauliflower in a regular blender (if you don’t have an immersion blender) and add stock. Blend until smooth. Then return the mixture to the stockpot on the stove and follow the remaining directions.

HAM & POTATO CHEDDAR SOUP

SERVINGS: 8 | PREP: 15 MIN. | COOK: 20 MIN. | TOTAL: 35 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: 2 russet potatoes, peeled and diced | 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil | 2-3 carrots, sliced | 1 medium onion, diced | 2 Tbsp. butter | 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour | 4 cups chicken broth, divided. | 1 cup heavy cream | 1 Tbsp. mustard powder | 2 tsp. thyme | 1 tsp. salt | 1/4 tsp. white pepper | 1 cup sharp shredded cheddar | 1 cup ham, cubed | 4 green onions, sliced

DIRECTIONS: PEEL and dice potatoes. PLACE potatoes in a large stock pot, cover with cold water. BRING it to a boil and cook until softened. DRAIN and set aside; dice the onion and carrots. DRIZZLE olive oil into a medium stockpot and add onions and carrots. COOK until softened. ADD butter to the stockpot and sprinkle in flour, stirring to form a paste. ADD 3 cups of chicken broth and heavy cream. ADD spices. BLEND cooked potatoes and the remaining 1 cup of broth in a blender until smooth. ADD to the soup mixture. BRING to a simmer, stirring occasionally. STIR in cheddar cheese and mix until melted. Reduce the heat and add cubed ham. SIMMER for 5 minutes until warm. LADLE soup into serving bowls and garnish with green onion.

TIPS & TRICKS: Instead of boiling potatoes, peel, cube, and roast the potatoes (tossed with a little oil, salt, and pepper) at 400° until golden. Roasting caramelizes the edges and brings out their natural sweetness.

LASAGNA SOUP

SERVINGS: 12 | PREP: 15 MIN. | COOK: 30 MIN. | TOTAL: 45 MIN.

INGREDIENTS: 1 ½ lb. ground beef | ½ lb. mild Italian sausage | 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil | 1 medium onion, diced | 3 garlic cloves, minced | 6 cups beef broth, unsalted | 1 (15 oz.) tomato sauce | 1 (15 oz.) diced tomato | 3 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped | 2 tsp. basil | 1 tsp. fennel seed | 1 Tbsp. Kosher salt | ½ tsp. black pepper | ½ package (8 oz.) lasagna noodles, broken in pieces

DIRECTIONS: COOK ground beef and sausage in a large pot over medium-high heat until browned. DRAIN grease and remove meat from the pot. DICE the onion and mince the garlic while the meat is browning. ADD onion and garlic, sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. STIR in tomato sauce, diced tomato, spices, and broth. Return meat to the pot. BRING to a boil, then add lasagna noodles pieces to the pot. REDUCE the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until noodles are tender. To serve, ladle the hot soup into bowls, add mozzarella, and parmesan to garnish.

TIPS & TRICKS: You can use any pasta shape, such as bowtie or Sfoglini. Pasta will continue to absorb sauce over time. It’s okay to add more broth or tomato sauce to achieve a soup-like consistency if it gets too thick, check seasoning levels.
