God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
– 1 John 4:16
When I was a kid, I loved the song, “Jesus Loves Me”. If I’m completely honest, I still do. I can never get tired of hearing the simple message of unconditional love from the Lord. He loves us even when we’re unlovable. He loves us when we feel like no one else does. He loves us even when we might not love ourselves.
This months, as we give cards, chocolates, and flowers to show our love, remember how God showed His own love for us. He gave us His only son (John 3:16) while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). He loves you enough to call you His daughter (1 John 3:1). He loves you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) In fact, 1 John 4:8 tells us, “God IS love.” And Romans 8:38 assures us nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A STORIED PAST
Netflix’s The New Yorker at 100 celebrates the iconic magazine’s centennial with an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at its evolution from a 1925 humor publication to a powerhouse of journalism, fiction, and cartoons. Directed by Marshall Curry and narrated by Julianne Moore, the documentary follows editors, writers, fact-checkers, and artists as they prepare the landmark anniversary issue, revealing the meticulous craft and cultural influence that have sustained The New Yorker for a century.
LOVE NOTES
Canadian jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall is known for her sultry voice and sophisticated interpretations of classic jazz. Her 2001 album, The Look of Love, is a romantic standout, featuring lush arrangements by Claus Ogerman. From the dreamy title track to the playful “S’Wonderful” and tender “A Case of You,” Krall creates an intimate, elegant mood — perfect for a cozy, candlelit evening or a quiet, romantic soundtrack at home.
VINTAGE ROMANCE
Released in 1986, Pretty in Pink turns 40 this year (theater anniversary release, February 14th), and its influence still lingers. John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age film captured teenage longing, class divides, and the courage it takes to be yourself. From Andie’s unforgettable thrifted style to a soundtrack that defined a generation, the movie remains a touchstone for romance, individuality, and ’80s nostalgia — proof that some stories never go out of fashion.

Halls of Heaven in the Echoes
THE SUPREME PURPOSE OF GOD
BY MIKE MAZYCK
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
(Ephesians 2:4–7)
In a passage containing enough spiritual meat for a lifetime of meditation, it may be the two most inconspicuous words that carry the heaviest weight. Like Christ Himself, they are lowly and overlooked, yet they point us towards the supreme reason for our existence – why we are breathing the air we breathe, why our hearts continue to beat, and why we were raised from spiritual death to eternal life in Christ:
“So that.”
Two words whisper to us…The words that follow will tell you the purpose of your existence — the “why” behind the entire story!
And here’s the startling truth, the one that 21st Century Christianity doesn’t want you to know: That purpose isn’t about me, and it’s not about you!
It is about Him. It is about His glory.
As it says, “…so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus”
From the opening words in Genesis to the final “amen” in Revelation, Scripture points us to one overarching theme: God acts for the glory of God.
Jonathan Edwards put it like this, “The great end of God’s works… is the manifestation of His [own] glory.” The great R.C. Sproul wrote, “The chief end of God is to glorify God and to enjoy Himself forever.” That is not ego — it is the very nature of ultimate perfection. God’s glory is the highest good in the universe, and therefore the greatest end of every divine act.
My friend, the supreme purpose behind our salvation is this — that “in the coming ages,” for all eternity stretching endlessly before us, we will become the radiant showcase of the immeasurable riches of His grace. Think of that for a moment. Forever — not for a season, not for a century, not for the first thousand years of glory — but forever. The redeemed saints will be the living, breathing display case of God’s infinite attributes: His unfathomable grace. His incomprehensible kindness. His unwavering mercy. His unquenchable love. His eternal power and might. We are the trophies of His grace, crafted by Him, so that we might be displayed in the halls of heaven for all of eternity.
I have found this truth to be ever so helpful when I find myself asking those difficult questions about this life. Questions like, Why Lord? Why all the pain and suffering? Why do we have to go through all of this? Why is there so much evil in this life?
As I’ve pondered those questions, I have found it helpful to imagine I’m reading a story — a story about a great warrior in a distant land.
Since childhood, he had been trained for war. His mental and physical discipline was unmatched by any of his counterparts. His mind grew sharp and his muscles grew strong. As he walked through the town square, people whispered about his skill and might, marveling at the promise of the young warrior. With each chapter, I’m given
another glimpse of his rising greatness. But as I near the conclusion of the story, I realize something is missing: there has been no battle. No enemy. No conflict. No foe for him to overcome. What kind of story would that be?
If you’re like me, you’d feel cheated. Something inside us knows instinctively that the greatness of a warrior is revealed on the battlefield. As a frame holds the picture, the fight itself becomes the display for all to see the quality of the warrior.
My friend, the story we live in is the battlefield upon which the glory of God is being eternally displayed.
We are the “damsel in distress.”
We are the rebel enslaved – the child who was kidnapped.
We are the prisoner trapped behind enemy lines.
And it is precisely in rescuing the helpless, pardoning the guilty, and defeating the serpent that God’s attributes are put on display.
His grace shines brightest against the backdrop of our rebellion. His love becomes all the more staggering when poured out on the wretched and unlovely. His patience and kindness become all the more incomprehensible when offered to those who resisted it at every turn.
When Paul says that God did all of this “so that in the coming ages” He might display His grace, he is revealing something that should cause unspeakable joy to rise within us. Every moment of our salvation story — our rescue, our regeneration, our sanctification, our perseverance — is part of a cosmic demonstration being crafted for the eternal enjoyment of heaven. For ages upon ages, all of heaven will behold the trophies of God — those radiant ones who shine like the sun, though they were once poor, wretched, and miserable. And as heaven beholds us, they will behold Him. And with one resounding voice they will cry out, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!”
My friend, this is the supreme reason for our existence; that for all of eternity, the story of what God has done on the battlefield of time will echo through the halls of heaven.

A C T I V CELEBRATES 10,000 MEMBERS
Less than a year after opening, ACTIV reached a major milestone — 10,000 members strong — highlighting the community-centered spirit that defines the facility.
Mayor Jim Ross and Parks, Recreation & Culture Director Gary Packan joined the celebration, presenting certificates to Lois, ACTIV’s first member, and Nanette, the 10,000th to join — symbolic bookends of a growing and connected community since opening last March.
Members also signed a 10K banner, sharing what keeps them coming back — from great workouts and fun classes to friendships, laughter, and a true sense of belonging.
Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters — to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.
Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has — a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

ESSENTIAL STEPS FOR BOARDING YOUR PET
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
PAW- FECT Prep
magine sipping piña coladas on a sun-drenched beach, the kids building sandcastles, and your furry sidekick is back home, tail-wagging through a stress-free stay at a top-notch boarding facility.
Sounds idyllic, right? But here’s the kicker: That seamless getaway doesn’t happen by magic. It starts with smart prep now, weeks or even months before your suitcase hits the door. With winter and spring getaways looming, why risk a last-minute scramble? Let’s dive into how to turn pet boarding from a worrywart’s nightmare into a guilt-free dream
BOOK EARLY.
PRIME SPOTS FILL FASTER THAN BEACHES DURING SPRING BREAK.
Start by asking fellow pet parents or your vet for recommendations. After you’ve narrowed down your list, visit each business in person. Does the staff coo over your pup like old friends? Check for licenses, vaccination requirements, and emergency protocols.
Your pet’s health is a non-negotiable foundation. Schedule that vet check-up pronto — think updated shots, flea/tick preventives, and a heartworm test. If your pet’s on medication, get a fresh prescription with detailed instructions.
Consider microchipping yourdog if it isn’t already. It’s a peace of mind essential for any “what if” scenario. While you’re at it, snap a current photo.
Jot down your dog’s quirks. Do they bolt at thunderstorms or prefer belly rubs over fetch? This info helps boarders keep your furry family member comfy, minimizing those separation blues.
Packing like a pro seals the deal. Whip up a “Pup’s Away Kit” with regular kibble (to help dodge tummy troubles), a favorite squeaky toy or two, and a worn T-shirt spritzed with your scent. It’s like a hug in fabric form. Toss in grooming supplies, any meds with a dosing chart, and a leash for walks.
Label everything obsessively. And for the eco-conscious twist, opt for biodegradable waste bags to keep the planet as happy as your pooch.
Ease the transition with trial runs. A puppy playdate at the facility or an overnight “test drive” builds familiarity, turning drop-off day into high-fives instead of howls. Set up daily check-ins via text or video. Many boarding businesses offer this as a free perk or for a small fee, letting you spy on nap times from your cabana.
In the end, remember that prepping now isn’t just logistics — it’s love in action. Your pet thrives when you prioritize their world amid yours. So, as calendars fill with travel dreams, carve out that boarding slot today.

PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION: A NEWER OPTION FOR MEN WITH AN ENLARGED PROSTATE
Most men do not bring up urinary symptoms right away. At first, they adjust. They wake up once at night, then twice. Sitting through a long meeting or a movie becomes difficult. When they go out to dinner or attend an event, many men find themselves constantly aware of where the nearest bathroom is. Over time, these disruptions begin to affect sleep, focus, and overall quality of life.
In many cases, the cause is benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. For years, treatment options were largely limited to medications or surgery. Today, that conversation has expanded. One option more men are hearing about is Prostate Artery Embolization, often called PAE.
WHAT IS PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION?
PAE is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure designed to improve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate. Rather than removing prostate tissue or operating through the urinary tract, the procedure works by reducing blood flow to the prostate. This causes the gland to slowly shrink over time, easing pressure on the bladder and improving symptoms.
The procedure is performed through a small access point in the groin. In experienced hands, it typically takes about 60 minutes, and most patients go home within a couple of hours, usually without the need for a catheter.
“For many men with BPH, PAE is a very good option with a low risk of sexual side effects,” says Dr. Brian Wong, interventional radiologist at Urology Partners of North Texas. “Experience and careful patient selection are key to successful outcomes.”
HOW WELL DOES PAE WORK IN THE LONG RUN?
When PAE was first introduced, one of the biggest questions was whether symptom relief would last. As longer follow-up data have become available, the results have been encouraging. Studies suggest that more than 70% of men continue to do well five years after PAE and do not require an additional BPH intervention during that time.
Improvement after PAE is usually gradual. Over weeks to months, many men notice fewer urgent trips to the bathroom, improved urinary flow, and less disruption to sleep and daily activities.
WHY DOES EXPERIENCE MATTER?
PAE is a technically challenging procedure. The blood supply to the prostate varies from person to person, and identifying the correct vessels requires precision and familiarity with vascular anatomy. As techniques have evolved and physician experience has increased, outcomes have become more consistent and
durable. Dr. Wong has performed more than 1,000 prostate artery embolization procedures, a level of experience that plays an important role in achieving reliable results.
WHY IS SEEING A UROLOGIST STILL IMPORTANT?
PAE is not the right answer for every man with urinary symptoms. A thorough evaluation by a urologist is essential before deciding on treatment. This includes confirming that symptoms are truly caused by BPH, evaluating prostate size and anatomy, and reviewing prostate-specific antigen levels to rule out other concerns, including prostate cancer. In some cases, other treatments may offer better or faster relief depending on the individual patient.
ABOUT UPNT
Urology Partners of North Texas has offered Prostate Artery Embolization for more than two years with excellent results. PAE is performed by Dr. Brian Wong at the IR Centers at UPNT, located at USMD Hospital in Arlington. To learn more or schedule an appointment online, visit UPNT.com.

You’ve likely heard cholesterol described as either “good” or “bad,” but the reality is a bit more nuanced. Cholesterol itself isn’t the enemy. It’s a waxy, fat-like substance your body needs to build cells, produce hormones, and support digestion. The key lies in how cholesterol travels through your bloodstream and the balance between its two main carriers: HDL and LDL.
According to the American Heart Association, cholesterol moves through the blood on proteins called lipoproteins. The two most talked about are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and they play very different roles in heart health.
LDL is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, but that label can be misleading. LDL’s job is to deliver cholesterol from the liver to cells throughout the body, where it’s needed for normal function. Problems arise when there is too much LDL in the bloodstream. Excess LDL can build up along artery walls, forming plaque that narrows arteries and restricts blood flow. Over time, this buildup increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
HDL, on the other hand, is known as “good” cholesterol because it helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it can be processed and
eliminated from the body. Higher levels of HDL are associated with a lower risk of heart disease because this process helps keep arteries clear and flexible.
Rather than focusing on one number alone, the American Heart Association emphasizes looking at cholesterol as part of a bigger picture. LDL levels are especially important when assessing heart disease risk, but HDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, blood sugar, and lifestyle factors all work together to influence overall cardiovascular health.
So what helps tip the balance in a hearthealthy direction? Daily habits matter. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats like those found in olive oil, nuts, and fatty fish can help lower LDL levels. Regular physical activity has been shown to raise HDL cholesterol, even in moderate amounts such as brisk walking. Avoiding tobacco products and maintaining a healthy weight also play an important role. It’s worth noting that cholesterol levels are influenced by genetics as well as lifestyle. Some people may follow all the right habits and still have elevated LDL levels, which is why regular checkups and conversations with a healthcare provider are essential. In some cases, medication may be recommended alongside lifestyle changes to manage risk.
Understanding HDL and LDL doesn’t require becoming a medical expert. It simply means recognizing that cholesterol balance matters. With informed choices and routine monitoring, supporting heart health can become a natural part of everyday living rather than a source of stress or confusion.
Know Your Numbers
The American Heart Association recommends adults age 20 and older have their cholesterol checked every four to six years, or more often if risk factors are present. While individual goals may vary, general guidelines suggest aiming for an LDL level below 100 mg/dL and an HDL level of 60 mg/ dL or higher. Total cholesterol is ideally kept under 200 mg/dL. Triglycerides, another type of blood fat, also play a role in heart health and should be below 150 mg/dL. A healthcare provider can help interpret these numbers in the context of overall risk.
BALANCING ACT
COMBINING PLASTIC SURGERY PROCEDURES FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
The allure of combining plastic surgery procedures — such as a tummy tuck with liposuction, a breast lift and breast augmentation, or a facelift with a neck lift — has grown as patients seek comprehensive transformations in a single surgical session. This approach, often chosen for efficiency as well as for producing natural-looking results, offers significant benefits, but it also comes with risks that require careful consideration. Understanding both sides empowers patients to make informed decisions.
BENEFITS OF COMBINING PROCEDURES
Combining surgeries streamlines the aesthetic journey. One major advantage is cost savings. Patients pay for anesthesia, facility fees, and surgical staff once rather than multiple times for separate procedures.
A single recovery period is another favorable draw. Undergoing one healing phase minimizes downtime, which is ideal for busy professionals or parents.
A 2023 ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) report noted that 80% of surgeons observed patients opting for combinations to shorten recovery. Harmonious results are also key, and addressing multiple areas simultaneously, like a mommy
makeover (tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, and liposuction), ensures balanced outcomes, avoiding the uneven look of staged surgeries. Procedures targeting the same body region, such as facelifts, neck lifts, and eyelid surgeries, are particularly effective for cohesive, naturallooking facial rejuvenation.
RISKS AND CONSIDERATIONS
Combining procedures increases complexity. Longer surgical times elevate risks, as surgeries exceeding six hours increase the chances of complications. Mayo Clinic research and other medical studies indicate that prolonged anesthesia can increase risks, especially in those with underlying health conditions.
Intense recovery is another factor. Multiple surgical sites mean more tissue trauma, swelling, bruising, and discomfort, potentially overwhelming patients physically and mentally.
Procedure compatibility also matters. Combining facial and body surgeries can complicate recovery due to conflicting post-operative restrictions, like limited mobility after body procedures clashing with facial healing needs.
PATIENT SUITABILITY
Not everyone is an ideal candidate. Suitable patients are in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations. A thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is crucial to assess your medical history and help ensure your safety. For instance, combining a tummy tuck and liposuction works well for healthy patients seeking body contouring, but those with underlying conditions may need staged procedures.
SURGEON TRAINING AND EXPERTISE IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
Combining plastic surgery procedures can be a game-changer, offering cost efficiency, streamlined recovery, and balanced results. However, the increased surgical and recovery demands require careful planning with a skilled surgeon. By weighing benefits against risks, patients can approach combination surgeries with confidence, achieving transformative outcomes safely.
Board-certified plastic surgeons, trained through rigorous programs, are essential to navigate these complexities safely.

FOR US.
FOR OUR WORLD.
FOR OUR STATE.
BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
Love them or hate them, oysters are a staple of southern cooking. For some of us, the sight of a dozen raw oysters on a plate is nirvana. Others can enjoy them only if they’re baked, gilled, or smoked. For still others, just a glimpse of their slimy texture means game off. Whatever your preference, there’s no denying oysters are good for us and good for our world.
FOR OUR WORLD
Oysters are filter-feeders. That means that under the right conditions, a single oyster can filter 50 gallons of water each day, removing excess nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as pollutants such as heavy metals, and helping balance water chemistry.
Because oysters grow on top of one another forming oyster reefs, they provide vital habitat to over 300 different marine species including fish, crabs, shrimp, and other shellfish and add biodiversity to our waterways. Oyster reefs create a living shoreline that serves as a natural buffer against coastal erosion. This buffer can absorb wave energy during storms to protect shorelines, safeguarding
both beachfront communities and the coastal ecosystems they’ve helped to create.
FOR US
Oysters are naturally nutrientdense, offering zinc, vitamin B12, iron, selenium, copper, omega-3 fatty acids, and high-quality protein in every serving. They’re also low in calories, making them a satisfying option for health-conscious seafood lovers.
Their standout nutrient is zinc, which plays an important role in immune function and wound healing. Vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids support overall brain and nerve health, and omega-3s also help lower triglycerides and support cardiovascular wellness. Iron and copper contribute to healthy blood cells and energy production, while selenium acts as a powerful antioxidant.
Although oysters contain only small amounts of calcium and minimal vitamin D, their impressive mix of minerals and healthy fats makes them a solid addition to a balanced diet. And because they’re packed with protein, they help keep you fuller longer, supporting muscle repair and everyday energy.
FOR OUR STATE
Texas is home to 22,760 acres of public oyster reefs and 2,321 acres of private oyster leases. The Texas oyster industry contributes around $33.4 million to the state’s economy through commercial fisheries, seafood processing, distribution, and restaurants. Their water filtration and habitat creation benefits the entire Texas seafood industry, which is threatened by the environmental changes and coastal erosion oysters help mitigate.
“R” RULE
If you grew up, like I did, with the adage that oysters are only good during a month containing the letter “R”, that’s only partly true. During cooler months when water temperatures drop, oysters grow slower and build up more glycogen making them taste sweeter and nuttier. Summer oysters are fine though. They just might have a less complex flavor profile. But, hey, the next few months are “R” months. Sweet, nutty oysters are calling. What are you waiting for?
* As with any seafood, it’s important to obtain oysters from reputable sources and cook them properly to avoid potential foodborne illnesses. Photos are for illustrative purposes.
Best-selling author Michael Pollan famously wrote, “Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.” If I may, I’d expand that thought to gardening: Why plant something your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as a plant?
Many plants sold today are developed so home gardeners can’t reliably save seeds from one season to grow the same plants the next or enjoy swapping seeds with fellow gardeners — enter heirloom plants.

THE FUN & FUNCTION OF HEIRLOOM PLANTS
IS AN HEIRLOOM PLANT?
Although the term “heirloom” isn’t formally regulated, it generally refers to seeds and plant varieties cultivated and saved before 1951. Why 1951? That’s commonly cited as the period when scientists began creating new plant varieties in large numbers through controlled pollination. Many of these hybrid varieties do not grow true to type from saved seed. For annual plants, that often means purchasing new seeds year after year.
Seed Savers Exchange, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing heirloom seeds, defines it this way: “Heirloom describes a documented heritage being passed down from generation to generation within a family or community.” In its biennial catalog, Seed Savers offers flowers such as Grandpa Ott’s Morning Glory and foods like Aunt Ruby’s German Green Tomato, each with its own backstory, including who brought the seeds to the U.S., where they came from, and when.
HEIRLOOM
PLANTS ARE A SAFETY NET
Consider this: estimates suggest that since 1900, the world has lost more than 75% of its edible plant varieties. At one time, thousands of apple varieties grew across North America. Today, only a fraction of those remain, with many varieties lost for good.
Organizations such as United Plant Savers (UPS) work through plant sanctuaries, research, education, outreach, and conservation efforts to help ensure valuable plant varieties are preserved for future generations.
Why should this matter to the home gardener? Because every garden, no matter its size, plays a role in strengthening the food system. While much of the U.S. food supply depends on a small number of crops such as corn and soybeans, home gardens offer an opportunity to grow a wider range of plants and preserve valuable varieties. Greater seed and crop diversity helps agriculture adapt to changing climate conditions and meet new challenges with resilience. In simple terms, heirloom plants encourage diversity, and diversity helps keep our food system strong and secure.
HEIRLOOM PLANTS ARE FUN
Heirloom seeds offer unique varieties and are often celebrated for their flavor. Many gardeners also appreciate the opportunity to save seeds from favorite plants and replant them year after year. I purchased heirloom Hill Country Red okra seeds in 2007 and have replanted seeds from each harvest nearly every season since. I’ve also shared those seeds with friends and family, many of whom have enjoyed similar success. As you plan your garden for 2026, whether growing food or flowers, heirloom plants are well worth considering.
ROUGH CREEK LODGE, RANCH, & RESORT
JUST TWO HOURS FROM DALLAS — BUT A WORLD APART
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Caroline didn’t want much in a family vacation. Just a place where she and her husband could get away with their teenage daughter and each find activities they enjoy, things they could do together as a family, and some they might each enjoy separately. She wanted a place that was beautiful, with luxury accommodations, an attentive staff, and amenities such as outstanding cuisine and perhaps a day spa where she and her daughter could enjoy some pampering, all set in gorgeous surroundings. On second thought, it did seem like a tall order to find all that without having to travel far from their home and commitments in Dallas.
In the end, Caroline’s expectations were surpassed when the family booked a few nights at Rough Creek Lodge, Ranch, and Resort, just two hours from Dallas. What they found there was 9,000 acres of unspoiled natural beauty with more amenities and activities than they could enjoy in just one visit. Over the next few days, they wandered scenic trails on horseback, fished in stocked lakes and ponds, rode ATVs through an enchanted forest, and stargazed together under the endless Texas sky.
“My husband was excited about the sporting clays, golf driving range, newly installed putt-putt course, and a
guided fishing trip,” Caroline said. “My daughter and I had a blast on the zipline, at the bowling alley, and climbing wall. We rode horses as a family and had an exhilarating experience on the new paintball encounter, where we could shoot at dinosaurs and Bigfoot.
Rough Creek truly offered more than the family could take in, including guided duck, hog, and deer hunting, a 1,000yard rifle range, and a five-lap mini UTV track for kids. There’s a pistol range, a high rope course, and pickleball and basketball courts. Families can enjoy hayrides by day and s’mores around the bonfire by night. Bikes are available for guests to use, and side-by-sides can be rented. During warmer months, there’s a family pool as well as an adult-only pool.
The Kid’s Ranch features foosball, air hockey, ping pong, and video games, and kids are thrilled to dig for actual fossils with a fossil identification book to help them identify their discoveries. Saturdays and holidays feature live music in the great room and the lakeside terrace. You can stroll to the top of Gunn Mountain Lookout to take in stunning hill country views while you watch majestic longhorns and even white buffalo roam in their natural habitat. And oh, that Texas sky up above!
The lodge also has a full, award-winning spa offering massages, facials, and bridal packages.
Kids truly never run out of new things to do, including a petting corral and pony rides. There are an interactive hiking and natural trail, a batting cage, a spacious sports field, a billiards and darts room, and you can get lost in the largest maze in the state of Texas. There’s even a state-of-the-art on-site fitness center. If all that wasn’t enough to keep you busy, you’re just 20 minutes from Dinosaur Valley, Fossil Rim Wildlife Park, and the Squaw Valley Golf Course.
Caroline’s family could choose between a guest room at the fivestar lodge, a cabin, or an entire vacation home. But for Caroline, the outstanding feature of Rough Creek Lodge, Ranch, and Resort was the staff. “Everyone was so friendly and accommodating,” she said. “Our guides for our excursions, Kayla and Sophie, felt like one of the family by the end of our trip. Every staff member we encountered was eager to make our stay as wonderful as they could. One thing I commented on again and again was the number of teenage guests around us, and not one of them was on their phone. When was the last time you saw teenagers who were so engaged they forgot to text or scroll?”
“Every meal we had was outstanding,” Caroline said. “We love breakfast food, and each day began with a gorgeous gourmet breakfast. For lunch and dinner, the onsite chef, Gerard Thompson, thrilled us with his innovative take on rustic American cuisine. He really seemed to take pride in making our experience the best it could be — like everyone else — and absolutely every detail was thoughtfully crafted to enhance our stay. I thought how fun this would be for a girls’ weekend or a bachelor or bachelorette party, and I’m already thinking about a couple’s getaway, just me and my husband.” Even in the lodge, rooms come complete with Murphy beds and bunk beds, so there’s plenty of room for a group of friends or a family.
Rough Creek is quickly becoming a popular spot for weddings, too. Whether the bride and groom choose an intimate ceremony atop Gun Mountain, a romantic lakeside exchange, or a traditional chapel wedding with up to 300 guests, there are accommodations for the bridal party and guests, and plenty for everyone to enjoy, plus room onsite for the wedding, wedding reception, and rehearsal dinner. You can even book the entire resort for the day or the entire weekend. Rough Creek is popular for corporate events and team building, with a professional on-site conference manager assigned to your group to anticipate your every need.
You can even purchase Rough Creek gift cards for getaway packages, dining, activities, and retreats. Find out more and start planning a vacation you won’t soon forget at RoughCreek.com.
