This is the best program I have ever been on. I carried around one of their advertisements close to 6 months and finally decided to bite the bullet and get started. I didn't want to gain the full Covid 19 pounds! I have been on many different programs, but this is the first time I have met my goal and then some. You can eat real food and no prepackaged stuff. I lost 7 pounds in the first week, which kept me very motivated. All together, I lost 26 lbs and got to buy all new clothes!! Becky has made weight loss fun and she is very encouraging. Not to mention very supportive when I slipped up. Thank you so much Diet Solutions. You're the best!!

letter from the publisher

I love looking on Facebook, this time of year, and seeing all those first-day-of-school pictures, kids beaming their brightest smile, sporting new backpacks, spiffy new tennis shoes, and carrying so many hopes and dreams into the classroom with them. Whether you send your child to public school, teach them at home, or partner with one of our outstanding private schools, back-to-school time is a time of optimism and new beginnings for kids and teachers —and parents.

I thank God for the gift of all those eager students and dedicated teachers, administrators, and school workers. James 1:5 tells us if we need wisdom, we can ask God and He’ll give it to us. I ask for wisdom for our teachers, that we may know the best way to reach and teach each child. I pray for the leadership of the school, that they walk in wisdom and grace. I pray for the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance throughout each school campus.

Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” I pray for all those friendships that will be formed to sharpen each other into better people. And lastly, I pray for God’s protection around each school, student, teachers, administrator, and other school worker. Thank you, Lord, for the blessing of education.

letters from OUR MAYORS

Mansfield has proven to be one of the cultural hotspots in the metroplex. Along with our regional partners, we celebrated one of our most active summers in a long time. Our downtown was sizzling with the hottest bands, arts festivals, and old-fashioned cooking contests. This summer was the season when we celebrated the 131st anniversary of Mansfield’s incorporation. The celebration highlighted why our city is a beloved place to live.

To add to the excitement of the summer, now Mansfield residents – along with our partners in southeast Tarrant County – have more to look forward to in the future. On July 27, the city announced a transformative mixed-use development project in Historic Downtown Mansfield that will reinvigorate the district and catalyze future development. The development will bring residential, retail, recreational,

office and parking space to four acres of city-owned land along Smith and Elm streets in Historic Downtown Mansfield. Our city continues to thrive not only in arts and entertainment, but also in education. In late August, we will celebrate the grand opening of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing's Mansfield satellite campus. This campus will produce high-quality medical professionals right here in Mansfield. Let me close with a challenge to my friends from neighboring cities. From Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, the City of Mansfield will participate in the North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge, a new event from the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The goal of this event is simply to be the city that picks up the most litter per resident. Mansfield aims to win!

It’s a great time to be in Grand Prairie! For everyone who is getting back into the school routine I wish you and your students a fantastic school year.

We are so excited about the fantastic new development that is coming to Grand Prairie, and our city has a very bright future ahead. While we’re enjoying our city’s successes, let’s all take time to keep our city clean. Litter is a problem affecting the beauty and health of communities throughout Texas. This year’s North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge encourages us to all take action to clean up our city.

In fact, Mansfield Mayor Michael Evans has challenged Grand Prairie along with Arlington and Dalworthington Gardens to see which city

So much is happening this month in The American Dream City. Where to begin? Kids have returned to Arlington ISD schools and, thanks to local non-profits and volunteers, 10,000 of them returned with free backpacks filled with school supplies. Although no one knows how this school year will play out, it’s obvious teachers and students are thrilled to be returning to face-to-face learning. The Texas Rangers were excited too as they returned to Globe Life Field to host Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners in a six-game homestand and as they inducted former Texas Rangers third baseman, Adrián Beltré, and legendary PA Announcer, Chuck Morgan into the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame. And

can pick up the most litter. On behalf of the citizens of Grand Prairie, we accept this challenge!

Here’s what you can do to help.

• Pick up trash in your neighborhood and put it in trash bags.

• Go to gptx.org and enter the amount of litter you picked up on our Litter Challenge page. You will automatically be registered for a chance to win a prize.

Entering the amount of litter collected will help us keep track so we will win this challenge!

Live Life Grand,

by the time you read this you may have already taken your first ride in an Arlington RAPID self-driving vehicle. The cars are now taking more than 90 trips a day around downtown and the UTA campus. They’re available 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for destinations including the downtown library, city hall, UTA, and numerous restaurants, offices, and businesses.

Lastly, we hope you’ll mark your calendars for the 2021 Ramblin’ Roads Music Festival October 1st through 3rd featuring more than 60 events, 50+ bands, and 18 venues throughout the city, all in one weekend. It sure is an exciting time to be living in Arlington, Texas.

NEW CEO BUILDS COMPASSIONATE CULTURE

Kenneth Rose is a new face in town who has wasted no time connecting with the local community and leading Texas Health Hospital Mansfield as President and Chief Executive Officer. Rose’s leadership has shaped an incredible culture in the midst of uncertainty. Texas Health Mansfield opened amid the pandemic, just in time for the first COVID-19 surge, followed by the historic winter storm and now the Delta variant strain. In most people’s opinion, this would’ve been a very rocky start. But because of Rose’s leadership and commitment to both the community and his team, Texas Health Mansfield is thriving. Many people have commented on the compassionate care and positivity that every team member exhibits throughout the hospital. “Culture eats strategy for breakfast is my leadership mantra. I believe that the foundation of our success starts with caring for each other and knowing what personally inspires us,” shares Rose. Here at Texas Health Mansfield, our job is not just a time punch, it is a calling.

Rose’s calling is driven by a personal tragedy. During his previous role at Texas Health Huguley, Rose received a call late Friday afternoon from his mother sharing that his father had an accident. Rose and his wife rushed to the airport. While waiting to board the plane, Rose received the tragic news that his father had passed away. Rose shares, “In that moment, all I could think about was my mom by herself in the hospital having lost the love of her life at the young age of fifty-five. Was anyone there for her? Did anyone give her a hug or try to comfort her?” This was a definitive moment for Rose. He knew that no one should feel alone in times like this. That inspired him to build a culture that

encourages team members to connect with and be there for others during their most difficult and vulnerable times.

Rose’s three non-negotiables for team members are that they are hungry, humble and people smart. Rose leads by example when it comes to these three qualities. On a typical day, you might find him cleaning floors, stacking trays, and visiting patients. When the winter storm hit, Rose spent the entire week driving team members to the hospital so they could take care of patients. Texas Health Mansfield’s mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ and he encourages team members to live out this mission beyond the walls of the hospital by participating in

the hospital’s quarterly volunteer projects. In the brief nine months that the hospital has been open, Texas Health Mansfield has volunteered 225 hours with 103 volunteers. Keep an eye out for the bright green volunteer shirts around town!

Besides being active in the community, in Rose’s free time, you will find him either spending time with his wife Alyssa and their two children, Sofia and Theodore, on the golf course or watching the Tennessee Titans. “My family and I love living in Mansfield. It is very rewarding to work alongside an incredibly talented team and provide whole-person care to everyone that walks through the doors of Texas Health Mansfield,” says Rose.

As Trisha says: “I love to cook now more than I ever have because, for me, cooking is about love. It’s sharing a meal with family and friends and talking about our lives. It’s working out thoughts in my head about what I need to conquer or accomplish while I’m working on a homemade pastry crust. Sometimes the feel of cold butter in my hands working through the flour just makes me see things more clearly.”

SecurityNational Mortgage Company

WELCOME TO YOUR JOURNEY HOME

“Every member of my team came from a leadership position at their previous company,” he said. “Each one was selected for their character and attitude and each of them shares my passion for guiding families through the path of home ownership with a servant’s heart.”

BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOS BY DAYDREAM PHOTOGRAPHY

There’s no question what Jay Cruz considers the most important quality a mortgage lender can possess—a servant’s heart. In fact, he hand-selected every member of his team at SecurityNational Mortgage Company for that quality. “Every member of my team came from a leadership position at their previous company,” he said. “Each one was selected for their character and attitude and each of them shares my passion for guiding families through the path of home ownership with a servant’s heart.”

In fact, it was that servant’s heart that led Jay to take the leap of faith and open his own mortgage company, after years working for someone else. “I knew that, as an owner, I’d have more flexibility and control to help more families,” he said. Having grown up in Dallas, Jay fell head-over-heels for Mansfield when he first came here to close on a home for one of his clients. “We came into Downtown Mansfield in the middle of the pickle parade and I thought how cool it would be to have an office here,” he said. “We’ve absolutely fallen in love with the town and especially with the people. We’ve been able to help so many families—and many first-time buyers—realize the American dream of home ownership and we love being part of what makes this city so amazing.”

CLIENT EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT

Jay and his team take seriously their role as educators to their clients.

“Many people have heard and believed that they need a sizable down payment to buy a home,” he said. “But in many cases, we’re able to help a family make a home purchase with as little at 3% down. We participate in several downpayment assistance programs that help with down payment and closing costs and you don’t have to be a firsttime buyer to qualify. It’s our role—and our honor—to provide education and guidance throughout the mortgage process so the families we serve can live their best lives in the home of their dreams. And with our SNapp Home Mortgage mobile app you can get prequalified, calculate mortgage

payments, securely upload documents, and view your loan any time you want throughout the process.”

A SEASONED TEAM OF LENDERS

“I couldn’t be prouder of my team,” Jay said. “With their years of experience, they love nothing more than walking our clients through what can be a complicated mortgage process making it less stressful and more understandable. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer, a current homeowner wanting to refinance, or someone eager to add an investment property to your rental portfolio, our focus is on providing a five-star customer experience. Because of our affiliation with SecurityNational Mortgage we’re able to offer competitive interest rates and a wide range of loan products from fixed-rate conventional mortgages to FHA, VA, and jumbo loans as well as down-payment assistance programs. Because we all live, work, volunteer, worship, and play in this community, we take the time to forge relationships with our clients many of whom become friends and look upon each new client as a potential client for life.”

INDIVIDUALIZED SERVICE

Each of those clients is unique so each loan is, too. “Clear communication is key,” Jay said. “My team and I individually consult with each client to ensure we offer a full line of loan product solutions that best match their unique needs and financial situation, keeping the client updated every step of the way. clients come from enthusiastic referrals from a current or previous client.”

Q: In what way does the theme of Esther reflect the theme of the entire Bible?

A: The theme of the book of Esther, indeed, the theme of the Bible, is that all the injustices of the world will be turned on their head.

Grand reversals are God’s trademark. When we feel like everything is falling apart, God is working in our midst, causing everything to fall into place. He is the king of quiet providence…and he invites you and me to partner in his work. The headline of the book of Esther reads: Relief will come…will you be a part of it? When all seems lost, it’s not. When evil seems to own the day, it is God who has the final say. He has a Joseph for every famine and a David for every Goliath. When his people need rescue, God calls a Rahab into service. When a baby Moses needs a mama, God prompts an Egyptian princess to have compassion. He always has his person. He had someone in the story of Esther.

Q: In what ways are the lies and confusion of Persia applicable to us today?

A: The point of the first chapter of Esther is simply this: Persia is lying to you. Do we need the same reminder? The assignment given to the Jews has been passed on to us. God displays his glory and goodness through the Church. As we worship God, love our neighbors, and cherish our families, we become billboards of God’s message.

Max Lucado Q&A WITH

AUTHOR OF: YOU WERE MADE FOR THIS MOMENT

We, too, are caretakers. Caretakers of the message of Jesus. He was born through the lineage of the Jews. Today, he is born through the lives of his saints. As you and I live out our faith, he is delivered into a faith-famished culture. We have the hope that this world needs. But sometimes we forget. Persia is lying to us. I don’t mean to be blunt, but, then again, I do. Billion-dollar industries are conning to lure you into lifestyles that will leave you wounded and weary. How do God’s people live in a godless society? Blend in and assimilate? No, this is the time to stand out and assist. We were made for this moment.

Q: How do we face similar temptations as Mordecai and Esther regarding our identity in this world?

A: Our society permits all beliefs, except an exclusive one. Do whatever you want as long as you applaud what everyone else does. The incontestable value of Western culture is tolerance. Ironically, the champions of tolerance are intolerant of a religion, like Christianity, that adheres to one Savior and one solution to the human problem. To believe in Jesus as the only redeemer is to incur the disdain of Persia. In such moments, God’s message is clear: Remember your name. “What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are” (1 John 3:1 MSG). Do you know who you are? And whose you are? You are the presence of Jesus in this world-an eternal being, destined for an eternal home. Pimply-faced and gangly? Hogwash. You are a citizen of heaven. Unique in all of creation. Secured by Christ for eternity. The devil can’t touch you. The demons can’t have you. The world can’t possess you. What people think about you matters not one whit. You belong to your heavenly Father.

Q: How did Esther find the courage to take on the role of moral leader for her people, determined to lead her people through a crisis?

A: It had to be the straightforward message of Mordecai. Yes, the world is in a mess. Yes, we’ve fallen victim to a brutal Haman. But relief will come, and “who knows whether you have come into the kingdom for such a time as this?” Mordecai opened a window and shed a divine light into Esther’s world. “You are here for a reason,” he said. “Your life is part of a plan. You were placed here on purpose for a purpose.”

So were you, my friend. You, like Esther, were made for this moment. To be clear, you didn’t ask for this struggle. You want to get past it. You don’t know how much longer you can hold up. But what if God is in this? Did he not place you on this planet in this generation? He determined your birthdate, nationality, and selected your neighborhood (see Acts 17:26). What if you, like Esther, have an opportunity to act in a way that will bless more people than you could imagine? This is your hour. This is your moment. You were made to stand up like Mordecai, to speak up like Esther. Deliverance will come. God will have his victory. He will rescue his people. He will right the wrongs of this world. The question is not, Will God prevail? The question is, Will you be part of the team?

Q: How does the story of Esther guide us to use prayer when facing our own challenges?

A: The moment you bow your head to pray is the moment God lifts his hand to help.

Your heavenly Father wants to hear from you. Desperate? Without options? Without solutions? By no means. Now, more than ever, is the time to get down on your knees and plead for mercy. Esther could have remained hidden and done nothing. Or, she could have rushed into the presence of Xerxes. But she chose the wiser recourse. She chose prayer. Her story urges us to do the same. This is the time for a no-nonsense, honest, face-on-the-floor talk with the Lord of All. Garments need not be ripped, but veneer must be removed. Three days of fasting is optional, but the prayer of genuine humility is not. What is your version of Xerxes? What Haman-sized challenge are you facing? Is your job in jeopardy? Is your loved one in hospice? Is your family under attack? Is your faith in tatters? Retreat into your prayer closet. The queen could enter the throne room of Xerxes because she had spent time in throne room of God. The same is true in your story and mine. Once we’ve spoken to the king of heaven, we are ready to face any king on earth.

Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and bestselling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him.

His newest book, You Were Made for This Moment: Courage for Today and Hope for Tomorrow (Thomas Nelson, September 2021), is a relevant and timely release for a society still reeling from racial divides, political strife, and a global pandemic. Lucado demonstrated how he embraced his “moment” to minister in 2020, starting a daily video check-in. These messages have continued and have been viewed more than 42 million times since March 2020. In these videos as well as in his new book, Lucado encourages others to live fully in the grace and love of God, to step out in bold courage and faith, and to trust God for victory over all injustices.

As a writer, Max is known for combining poetic storytelling and homespun humor with the heart of a pastor. All of his trade books began as sermon series at Oak Hills Church, and his sermons all begin with Max asking himself this question: “What can I say on Sunday that will still matter on Monday?” He’s been dubbed “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today, and “The Best Preacher in America” by Reader’s Digest.

CATALYST MINISTRIES

RESTORATIVE RESIDENTIAL HOME FOR SURVIVORS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

t can be a terrifying thing when God calls us out of our comfort zone. For Julie Ryan, that call came early in her adult life, as He burdened her heart for ministry toward women. Like Isaiah, she responded, “Here am I, Lord. Send me.” And send her He has. She soon found herself serving as director of women’s ministry at a large church where she spent years mentoring women struggling in many areas, particularly supporting and equipping single moms. From there, God led Julie into international ministry, helping women in areas of the world where she says it’s “hard to be women.”

It was there, God began to open her eyes to the realities and prevalence of sex trafficking. “It was a hard truth to take in, as I learned the scale of the problem,” she said. “The Lord was so patient with me though allowing me to take ‘small bites’ of an international problem that’s larger and more destructive than

most people realize.” He eventually made it clear He wanted Julie to return to the US and begin a ministry to help women rescued out of sex trafficking in her own backyard, which at the time was Illinois.

Again, as soon as she said, “yes,” God began opening doors, connecting her with like-minded people, and putting everything in place to establish Catalyst Ministries in 2014 and Catalyst Farms in 2017, a beautiful and safe residential home where Christcentered support services are provided to foster healing, recovery, and an opportunity to begin a new life for women rescued out of life as sex slaves. Since that time, Catalyst Ministries in Illinois has empowered dozens of survivors to begin a life of worth and value. This year, a second location opened in the Dallas area.

Who They Are

Christ-followers who believe Jesus is the Catalyst and apart from him, we can do nothing

A community that believes every person has value and is worth fighting for

Individuals who joyfully work alongside our local community to see lives transformed

What they Do

Educate and engage the local community to understand the realities of human trafficking and sexual exploitation and to help strengthen, support, and advocate for the vulnerable

Partner with individuals, local churches, organizations, and law enforcement to reach and rescue those who have been oppressed

Work locally to provide a residential community for women in recovery from sex trafficking, exploitation, and extreme abuse

Survivors of sex trafficking are offered the chance to live in this beautiful home for up to two years at no cost to them where they are— first and foremost—bathed in prayer. They’re offered services such as GED completion or vocational training, trauma counseling, help with substance abuse, parenting classes, relationship counseling, and more.

“Many of the women are overwhelmed by how beautiful the home is,” Julie said. “They don’t feel like they deserve it. The first thing we can do for them is treat them like the people of worth they are. Then, with the help of our church and community partners, we empower them to make sustainable changes so when they leave, they’re able to support themselves and get the chance to dream and hope, for the first time in their lives.”

“Giving women the knowledge they’re highly valued in God’s eyes frees them from the lie that they’re simply property. Learning God loves and values them gives them dignity, offering them hopeanddeterminationtopursueabetterfuture for themselves and their families.”

How can you help?

Catalyst Ministries exists through the generous support of local churches and the local community who give of their time, talents, and treasures and who pray for the women daily. A 501c3, it offers volunteer opportunities as varied as drivers and office workers, equine and canine therapy, wellness and exercise partners, hobby and music teachers, life skill coaches, and respite resident assistants. Contact Julie at Julie.Ryan@ CatalystMinistries.net to find out about filling the position only you can.

“The problem of sex trafficking can seem overwhelming,” Julie said. “But God is bigger than this problem. Greater is He who’s in us than he who’s in the world. I couldn’t do this if I didn’t’ know that. He loves each of these women, and He is the One who ultimately brings healing— from the inside out.”

HALF-DAY JOURNEY

For those who have several hours to explore a trail, check out one of these half-day options at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Canyon, Texas, near Amarillo. This is home to the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” an absolutely breathtaking place that offers a perfect backdrop to your hike. Beginners can go on the three-hour easy Rylander Fortress Cliff trail, which runs along the canyon rim and offers scenic overlooks perfect for stopping and taking a few pictures. For something a bit more challenging, try the three-hour Upper Comanche trail or the four-hour Lower Comanche trail. Both difficult routes are best for more experienced hikers, and they feature rivers, wildlife, and beautiful views.

WEEKEND ADVENTURES

Make a weekend trip by going on a longer trail. Many even offer campsites, so you can bring a tent, spend the night, and

keep hiking. Climb to the top of Guadalupe Peak at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Salt Flat. This six-to-ten-hour strenuous hike is 8.5 miles round trip and is so worth it for the fantastic views at 8,751 feet — the highest spot in Texas.

After seeing the Top of Texas, travel to the biggest state park in Texas, Big Bend Ranch State Park in Terlingua. There are 238 miles of multiuse trails to choose from, so you’ll never run out of opportunities to explore. One of the most famous is the Rancherias Canyon Loop. The 9.8-mile two to three-day hike goes through the Chihuahuan Desert and takes you to several small canyons and the ridge of the Bofecillos Mountains. You can also try the 8.1-mile Lajitas Mesa trail, offering beautiful wildflowers, bird-watching, and other serene nature scenes in this moderate hike that gains 1,774 in elevation. While you’re there, set up camp in one of the many hike-in or drive-in primitive campsites to soak in the outdoors.

10 THINGS YOU NEED ON YOUR HIKING TRIP

Whether you’re going on a short nature walk or a weekend exploration, it’s important to be prepared. The American Hiking Society recommends bringing these 10 things on your next hike.

1. Shoes with the right traction, support, and protection — function over beauty — will make the difference between a happy hiker and a miserable one.

2. A map, compass, or another way to tell the direction in case your phone loses signal, or the battery dies.

3. H2O baby! The National Park Service recommends one gallon per day, per person.

4. Calorie-dense food like protein bars is essential to keep your energy up throughout the day.

5. Cool layers help you stay warm at night and not overheat during the day, as September in Texas is still pretty hot.

6. Safety items like lights, an emergency fire signal, and a whistle to alert others in case of an emergency.

7. A first aid kit filled with basic supplies to treat illness or injury is one of those things you hope you won’t need but is priceless if you do.

8. A small knife or multi-tool can be helpful in so many ways during your hike.

9. Sun protection, including sunscreen and sunglasses, will keep you from getting a sunburn while you’re outside. Bring a hat with a brim to shade your face, and don’t forget the bug spray.

10. Emergency shelter is great, especially for longer hikes. A lightweight space blanket, for example, will keep you dry in a sudden rainstorm.

EASE YOUR pain

UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING CHRONIC DISCOMFORT

hronic pain is the type that lasts for a prolonged time — months or even years. It can happen anywhere in the body and can be present all the time, or it may come and go. Chronic pain can interfere with your daily activities, including working, your social life, or caring for others, and generally make your life uncomfortable.

ACUTE VS. CHRONIC PAIN

Acute pain happens when something hurts you. Typically, it doesn’t last very long and tends to go away as the body heals itself. In contrast, chronic pain lasts long after recovery from illness or injury and sometimes occurs for no obvious reason.

CAUSES OF CHRONIC PAIN

Chronic pain sometimes has an obvious source, such as cancer or arthritis, which causes pain to last over an extended period. Additionally, an injury or disease can cause changes in your body that leave you more sensitive to pain.

Situations also occur where someone suffers chronic pain that has no obvious cause. Healthcare providers refer to this as psychogenic or psychosomatic pain, which can be caused by psychological factors like stress, anxiety, and depression. Some believe this type of chronic pain may also be caused by low levels of endorphins —the body’s natural chemicals that trigger positive feelings — in the bloodstream. And, of course, it’s possible for sources of pain to overlap. You may have two different pain-causing diseases, or you might have something like migraine headaches and psychogenic pain together.

DIAGNOSIS

If you seek professional help in managing chronic pain, your health care provider will probably begin by asking a number of questions, such as the location of the pain, its severity on a scale of one to 10, how frequently it occurs, how the pain is affecting your life and work, what makes it better or worse and what injuries or surgeries you may have had.

Your healthcare provider may also order various tests to determine the cause(s) of the pain. These could include:

Blood tests

Electromyography to test muscle activity

Imaging such as X-rays and an MRI

Nerve conduction studies

Reflex and balance tests

Spinal fluid tests

Urine tests

TREATMENT

After completing a physical examination and securing test results, your healthcare provider may prescribe or recommend certain medications to relieve your pain. These may include:

Anticonvulsants to relieve nerve pain

Antidepressants

Corticosteroids

Muscle relaxers

Opioids, which can be addictive and should be used carefully

Topical products containing pain relievers or that create soothing heat or cold

Sedatives to relieve anxiety or insomnia

NON-TRADITIONAL THERAPIES FOR CHRONIC PAIN

These might include, to name a few:

Acupuncture

Biofeedback to influence heart rate, breathing, and muscle tension

Exercise

Pet therapy

Mindfulness training, teaching you how to calm yourself

Reiki or Healing Touch, with a therapist using touch to change your body’s energy fields

The bottom line is that if you suffer from chronic pain, you should see your healthcare provider or pain specialist, who will help you manage your pain and live a more comfortable, productive life.

Fighting Chronic Pain with Exercise

Engaging in regular exercise is one of the best ways to deal with chronic pain and promote your overall health. Gentle exercise can often provide pain relief, and if the thought of exercise puts you off, remember that anything that gets you moving counts as exercise.

Here are some suggestions to get you going.

Walking - Your regimen can begin with something as easy as walking to the end of your block or making a loop around the block and gradually building from there. Walking in a local park is also a good option, especially if it has benches where you can take a break.

To keep your effort going, you might enlist a friend to walk with you. Just don’t let your chatting slow you down to a mere amble. Keep up the pace!

Dancing or Moving to Music - Crank up some of your favorite tunes and dance or move while sitting down or do a combination of the two.

Gardening - For many, gardening is a favorite form of exercise and stress relief.

Exercise in a Pool - You don’t have to know how to swim to exercise in a pool that isn’t too deep. The buoyancy of the water makes you feel lighter and makes exercise easier than on land. Slow movements are best, and if you’re not a swimmer, have someone with you to provide help if needed.

These are just a few possibilities, but whatever your choice, always get your doctor’s approval before starting a regular exercise routine.

PROCEDURES THAT TURNAROUND SUN DAMAGE

A POUND OF CURE

Since we don’t always choose an ounce of prevention, think of these procedures as your pound of cure.

Sunlight got you into this mess, and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments may help you get out of it. IPL (also known as photofacial) effectively treats dark spots and rosacea caused by sun damage, among other things. There is virtually no downtime after IPL, and treatment can be done in a short office visit. For best results, plan on investing in a package of two or three treatments and having an IPL “tune-up” every three to four months.

ou probably grew up singing songs about sunny days chasing the clouds away, but there were no childhood songs about the premature aging caused by sun damage. It’s probably just as well, but if you’ve indulged in too much fun in the sun, there are some procedures that can help reverse the appearance of sun damage. Now, that’s a reason to sing.

IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME

Finding yourself with visible sun damage is analogous to movies and sitcoms that portray a teenager throwing a party when mom and dad left town for the weekend. Just like spending too much time in the sun, the party sounded like a good idea at the time. Then things got out of control, and before you knew it, you were left to face the damage. Here are some of the types of skin damage noticed by sun worshippers.

Hyperpigmentation (better known as sunspots)

Rosacea

Freckles

Wrinkles

Uneven skin tone

Melasma (brown patches of skin)

Collagen breakdown (noticed as saggy skin)

Actinic keratosis (rough, scaly patches or skin growths)

Another option is laser skin resurfacing. Different types of skin resurfacing lasers are used to treat sunspots, reduce the appearance of fine lines, improve skin elasticity and tone, and more. Multiple sessions are usually required, and downtime can range from very minimal, if any, to a week or so, depending on the laser and how aggressive the treatment is.

Chemical peels can treat discoloration and improve your skin’s texture by removing the top layer of skin. They vary widely in strength, ranging from mild treatments with an alpha-hydroxy acid or a glycolic acid to deeper trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels. Expect to experience some redness and peeling skin for a few days following the procedure. New skin will become visible after several days.

Cryotherapy is a freezing technique where liquid nitrogen is applied to actinic keratosis. Expect a little stinging sensation followed by some redness and swelling. A blister may form the following day, followed by a scab. When the scab falls off in one to three weeks, it will reveal new skin.

Retinol can even skin tone, fade sunspots, and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. It may even prevent precancerous lesions from forming. Retinol is available in many over-the-counter products as a topical cream or gel. If you’ve tried the drug-store varieties but didn’t get the results you were seeking, ask your medical professional if prescriptionstrength retinol is right for you. Unless you have extremely sensitive skin, retinol is an excellent way to lessen the effects of sun damage. Part of the beauty of retinol is that it can be a worthwhile addition to the procedures mentioned earlier.

Closely follow your skincare provider’s aftercare guidelines for all of these treatments.

“And last but not least is protection from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens such as Isdin, Elta and ZO are eloquently designed to use the best ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect your skin without the white residue. Many varieties are made for all skin types and most are made with and without tint.”

DISAPPEARING ink

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH YOUR TATTOO HAS ENDED BY

ike a lot of things in Texas, tattoos are a big deal, and lots of people have them. However, sometimes our love affairs with our tattoos are more short-lived than a BBQ rib on a hot pit, and we want them gone — yesterday.

A tattoo consists of ink suspended in the skin. Our immune systems remove small foreign particles from our skin, but tattoo ink particles are too big, and thus, are permanent. A variety of options for removal are available.

Laser removal, the most common method, targets the ink particles with light waves that heat and break the ink into smaller pieces removed by the immune system. Complete removal may take one to 10 sessions. Some colors of ink are more difficult to remove than others and may not ever completely disappear. A six-week wait between each laser session allows the wounds to heal and the body to absorb as much of the ink as is possible. Many patients consider laser removal somewhat painful (like having a heavy rubber band repeatedly snapped against the skin), so laser aestheticians may apply topical skin numbing medications before the treatment. Expect the resulting wound to heal in around five days.

Because other methods of tattoo removal are more invasive than laser removal, they are less common. These methods include dermabrasion, chemical peels, and surgical excision of the tattoo.

Dermabrasion is a surgical method that uses a medical grinding tool to remove the outer layers of the skin that contain the tattoo ink particles. Because this procedure is painful, either a local or regional anesthetic or general anesthesia may be applied. An open wound requiring care will result. These wounds

typically take between 10 to 14 days to heal, and more than one session will likely be necessary. Significant scarring may occur.

Chemical peel removal involves applying a mild acid — trichloroacetic acid or TCA — to the skin to remove the outer layers that contain ink. Peels may be somewhat painful but typically do not require the use of an anesthetic. TCA peels can also result in an open wound that will typically heal in approximately five to seven days. Surgical excision requires cutting out the skin that contains the tattoo, pulling together the surrounding tissue, and then closing the skin with stitches. This method is best for small tattoos and will likely require the use of local, regional, or even general anesthesia, depending on the tattoo size. Patients should expect surgical excision to result in a scar.

It’s vital to carefully follow your provider’s aftercare instructions for each of these procedures. Typically, they can include daily gentle cleansing with mild soap and water and application of an antibiotic ointment. Some of the more aggressive treatments may require covering the wound with a dressing for a specified time.

MUMS T he W ord

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THIS FLOWERING TEXAS TRADITION

When it comes to autumn in the Lone Star State, mum’s the word, but it isn’t how our friends in the U.K. refer to their mothers. Texans are accustomed to thinking of mums as attentiongrabbing blooms just waiting to be adorned with crepe paper, beads, glitter, ribbons, feathers, and even lights. You name it. Anything and everything is game.

For those who’ve recently become Texans, mums are a fashionable floral decoration commonly seen around schools and campuses during homecoming season. They’re generally used as a type of corsage pinned to one’s lapel or dress, hung around the neck, or held by a hand proudly displaying school colors and seasonal embellishments. Traditionally, they’re bought for young women and men by their homecoming dates, though it’s perfectly fine to be given one by a family member or even splurge on one yourself. The male counterpart, albeit smaller, is called a garter.

So what’s the difference between a regular corsage and a fabulous Lone Star mum, and where does this splinter originate? Well, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact progenitor, but it’s speculated to have roots going as far back as the early 1900s. The term mum is short for the chrysanthemum flower, which commonly blooms in the autumn months. There are accounts in the early 1900s through the 50s that mum corsage prototypes were given during the homecoming season. These were much simpler, with beautiful flowering blooms pinned to collars.

In the 60s and 70s, the humble homecoming mum began to evolve to mirror the warmth and enormity of the Texas spirit. But it wasn’t until the 80s they began to take the form they have today. Given they’re a precious memento of an exciting occasion, it was a shame that organic flowers died so quickly. This gave rise to the

use of silk and plastic mums, yet it wasn’t the only change. As we all know, everything’s bigger in Texas, and so began the everincreasing size, flamboyance, and personal flair we see in homecoming mums today. Just imagine the fun being had in this scenario. It’s 1987, the height of the age of excess. The hair is big, and the mum’s even bigger still.

Slowly but surely, more of the common components we see in modern homecoming mums made their way into the mainstream. Nowadays, just about anything can be used to create homecoming mums. In fact, they’re art pieces in and of themselves. And the grander and showier, the better, with some enveloping the front of the recipient entirely. While the flowering bloom is still the centerpiece with trailing ribbons, anything from monogrammed plates, toys, stuffed animals, and school mementos can be incorporated into elaborate, breathtaking designs.

Homecoming mums can be purchased starting at around $30 and run upwards to $100 and well over $500 for extravagant creations. As homecoming season approaches, place your order early with the florist and specify your pick-up day. If you have the time and ability to handcraft one for someone special or for yourself, you can find an abundance of online instructional videos.

In the 60s and 70s, the humble homecoming mum began to evolve to mirror the warmth and enormity of the Texas spirit.

ne of my favorite things about gardening is planning. Winter evenings often find me fireside with stacks of seed catalogs and garden diagrams, dreaming of what will be. Of course, gardening in Texas can test one’s resolve. Our weather and soil conditions are merciless. But with enough fact gathering and planning, Texas gardening can be a rewarding pastime — year-round.

Here Comes the Sun

Most plants have a sun preference, so before selecting plants, note whether you’ll be planting them in full sun, shade, or a combination of the two. Many fruits, herbs, vegetables, and flowering plants require six hours of full sun at some time during the day, and some do best with morning sun while others prefer afternoon. Note where you need plants and where you might want to replace current plantings. Set timers on your phone to remind you to check throughout the day and see when the sun arrives and departs in different spots, then adjust your garden plan accordingly.

Know Your Soil

Soil provides your plants with the needed water, nutrients, and air for healthy growth and development. It’s important to determine whether you have sandy, peaty, chalky, silty, loamy, or clay soil since each has its own blend of organic and inorganic matter and minerals, which will cause plants to grow well or struggle. Request a soil analysis test from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Soil, Water, and Forage Testing Laboratory. They’ll analyze your soil and recommend soil amendments for the types of plants you hope to grow.

Choose a Style

You know your home’s interior style, but what decorating style do you want in your garden? Is your look more traditional, cottage, Japanese, modern, bohemian, Zen, coastal, English, prairie, or meadow? If your property is large enough, consider designing different zones in different styles. While selecting a style for your garden isn’t absolutely necessary, it can be useful to have a clear vision of what you’d like your space to look like before you start.

Select your Plants

Take time to educate yourself about the plants you’re considering. Make sure they grow in your hardiness zone. Take notes on how much water each plant will require, what type of soil it prefers, and how often and when it will need to be fertilized. For year-round enjoyment, plant perennials to bloom or produce during different seasons of the year, then fill in with annuals you can change up whenever you want to.

Opt for Drought-tolerant Plants

We all know how hot and dry Texas summers can be. Planting drought-resistant plants will save you work and heartache and conserve water. Live oak, Texas persimmon, dessert willow, Texas redbud, and crape myrtle don’t mind the natural climate at all. Other native plants to consider are glossy abelia, dwarf adagio maiden grass, autumn sage, Texas sage, red yucca, nandina, liriope, wavy cloak fern, lantana, dwarf yaupon holly, glossy abelia, and barberry. Happy gardening, y’all!
