They are incredible encouraging and always had a solution to my weaknesses. I feel great and owe it all to Diet Solutions.

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”
– John 11:25-26
When I was a young Christian, I heard a pastor say, “We only have Christmas so we can have Easter.” That statement stopped me in my tracks and it took me awhile to unpack its meaning. (In truth, I probably haven’t unpacked it all yet.) Jesus of Nazareth was the only baby born to die. He was the only Man who walked this Earth, not dreaming of heaven and wondering what it might be like, but knowing first hand its indescribable splendor because He willingly left it for us.
Easter is a time to stop and reflect on a sacrifice and a love we’ll never fully understand, this side of heaven. We teach our children and grandchildren about Jesus’ life, ministry, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension knowing full well we can’t really understand its significance ourselves, how the Perfect Lamb became sin for us, conquered death and dying, and reunited us with a Loving Father, something we could never do for ourselves.
On Resurrection Sunday, we gather with the ones we love to celebrate God’s victory over the grave and His perfect plan to reconcile us to Himself. We may not fully understand it but we fully embrace it. The tomb is empty. The throne is occupied. And victory is ours through our Risen Savior. Happy Easter from my family to yours!

Gwyneth Paltrow plays London publicist Helen, in parallel storylines that show what would have happened if she did or did not catch a morning train back to her apartment. Love, deception, trust, friendship, and comedy all come into focus as the two stories shift back and forth, overlap, and then surprisingly converge in this entertaining romantic comedy.
From a wok to a clay pot, every cuisine has a ubiquitous pot or pan that can cook just about anything. In the United States, the most common pan is a simple 12-inch skillet. Here you will find 125 recipes from the James Beard Award-winning team at Milk Street that will transform and expand the way you use this versatile piece of cookware. To make it easy to find the recipe you need, the chapters are organized by cooking times (an hour or less, 45 minutes, and under 30 minutes) as well as sections for side dishes, pastas, grains, stir-fries, pan roasts, and skillet-griddled sandwiches. And because the cooking is limited to one pan, the techniques are straightforward, and the clean-up is easy.

WHY DO THEY GET what I want?
ENVY AND THE EYES THAT MATTER
BY TILLY DILLEHAY
When I was about five, my dad invited me and my older sister into his home studio for fun. Like most of the musicians and producers in Nashville, he had a basement room outfitted with everything you need to make a decent demo: a dark soundproofed booth with a mic and stool, another room with a soundboard, and a thick glass window in between — for giving the “thumbs up” sign between takes.
He let me try first. I stood in the tiny room and sang along to the track playing through an enormous pair of headphones. In about three minutes, I was losing interest. I began to complain that the headphones were squeezing my ears, and my dad let me go back to playing.
Then it was my sister Sophie’s turn. And apparently, this was the day my dad discovered Sophie’s voice.
What did they work on? I didn’t hear it until a few weeks later when my parents had friends over for supper. My dad mentioned
the session they’d done, and our guests wanted to hear it. Everybody sat down in the living room, but for some reason, I didn’t go in.
I stood in the hallway outside as the track began and Sophie’s voice burst into the air.
Even at seven years old, her voice was clear, powerful, and controlled. My little stomach flipped. I cringed outside the door as the guests reacted. My dad modestly turned the volume down after the first minute. Why had I left the studio? Why did I quit so quickly? Why didn’t I see that it would lead to Sophie being shown off while I was left s tanding out in the hallway?
WISHING AGAINST OTHERS
The smell of foam insulation in a recording booth would become very familiar to me in years to come. My dad did a great job of including all his kids in the music of his life. He invited his daughters onstage with him regularly during church concerts.
Later, he used connections to get us all jobs working as session singers for children’s projects — allowing us to save for future cars or colleges. He produced and paid for me to record a CD of jazz cover tunes when I was fifteen and was always uniquely supportive of my voice — even if I knew it was more idiosyncratic and less powerful than Sophie’s. She was compared to Mariah Carey, I was compared to Billie Holiday, my younger sisters were later compared to The Wailin’ Jennys — and my dad managed to be a fan of all of it.
But when I look back, I’m shocked to recognize this moment as the earliest flowering of envy in my life. Peering back through the decades, I can see my fiveyear-old self standing in the hallway. The impulse of her heart is unmistakable.
I wished my dad would not play the CD. I wished the CD had been scratched or mislaid. I wished her voice didn’t sound like that. I wished the guests weren’t around to hear it.
In fact, I wished the glory of her voice was banished out of existence.
WHAT CAN QUENCH ENVY?
It’s not just little girls in headphones who hunger for glory. All of us seek beauty and light and fame in our free moments — watching our shows, listening to our songs, shopping for wedding photographers, hiking the lake trail, entwining our souls-in-bodies with other souls-in-bodies, posting our updates, kissing our children, and tucking ourselves into a booth at the local craft beer place for deep conversation. We are glory-seekers, sniffing the wind and watching the horizon. Let a thing whisper, however falsely, however faintly, of our God and Father, and we will run after it.
After all this seeking, how can we believe the good news when it comes? It’s too good to be true; it’s too much to bear: The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
(John 1:9–13)
We’re in the hallway outside, fuming that another child of God was given glories we weren’t. We’re wondering if the love of the Father will run out before we walk into the room, if he’ll look at us like Isaac looked at Esau and say, “He has taken away your blessing” (Genesis 27:35). We can’t imagine what kind of glory would make it okay.
What glory could take away the sting of being poor while another is rich, of being single while another is married with children, of giving our best to make mediocre paintings while someone else’s effortless eye creates a masterpiece?
ENVY WILL DROWN IN GLORY
There is, however, a glory that will swallow up the sting of inequality (though it has not promised to take
away inequality itself): this light has given us the right to become children of God . And this is the glory that can work such wonders:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
The pleasure of the Father will overtake us and swallow up all else — pleasure because of what Christ did on our behalf, pleasure because we’ve been reworked into his glorious image from the inside out. We now look like Christ — his glory will one day envelop us and transform us. It has begun even now: We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Envy doesn’t stand a chance. In the final day, it will be swallowed up in glory. Even so, come Lord Jesus.

CAMP THURMAN
MAKE MEMORIES YOU’LL NEVER FORGET
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Last year was a big year at Camp Thurman. It was their most successful summer ever with over 8,300 campers served. That means not only did 8,000-plus campers make memories and friendships to last a lifetime, but each and every one of them was introduced to Jesus and learned how to make Him their Lord and Savior. This year, they’re projected to reach even more precious souls with the Gospel message.
The internet is abuzz with rave reviews of Camp Thurman— from parent, from campers, from counselors, and from the community. One parent review says it all, “This is our fourth year, and my kids love Camp Thurman every second. They not only have fun, but they learn
about God. The staff is great and very attentive. Thank God for Camp Thurman!”
INVESTING IN KIDS
Established in 1969, Camp Thurman is a nonprofit, ministry-minded camp dedicated to sharing God’s love and helping people pursue their identity in Christ. Located on 14 verdant acres in Pantego, it offers premier day camp, team building, and campstyle activities for kids throughout the year. Because of its lush, country setting, kids can feel far from home, when they may only be miles away. It’s no wonder one longtime Camp Thurman camper wrote, “Camp is my favorite part of the summer every single year.”
INVESTING IN FAMILIES
Over the past 53 years, Camp Thurman has touched and molded the lives of approximately 136,000 campers. In 2000, they realized a longtime dream of extending the reach of the camp with a year-round challenge adventure program, Creating Connections by Design. More than 7,000 participants of all ages
uniquely bring to camp life. As many of them hope to return as a counselor, after making their own memories there as a camper, they understand that being at Camp Thurman is being part of a loving, Christian family. After working there three years, one counselor said, “This is one of the most fun places I’ve ever worked and truly an incredible
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Camp Thurman’s leadership looked at this summer’s season from every imaginable perspective and believe they can still offer a safe camp experience for children this summer. They’re doing this through unique scheduling and creative protocols that take all precautions, including social distancing, into account to keep campers and counselors safe. Find out more at CampThurman.org/covid-19.
enjoy Camp Thurman’s specialized programming each year through outdoor activities. Camp Thurman hosts several days throughout the year for their families to play at camp together. Two of the biggest events are the Family Fun Day in September, and the Christmas celebration in December. After each event, Camp Thurman continues to act as a resource for the group. One happy dad wrote, “Loved bringing the family on Family Day. Staff is super friendly and well trained. My family and I had a great time.”
INVESTING IN YOUNG ADULTS
Camp Thurman counselors are the cream of the crop chosen through an extensive application and interview process during which each potential counselor must pen a letter explaining what they can
experience. The greatest group of people work here for one common goal—to draw closer to God together.”
INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY
Camp Thurman invests in the lives of their annual 350 counselors, helping them find, explore, and strengthen their identity in Christ. Many of them return to camp throughout the year for Bible study then return to share God’s love with our community—and our world. It can make that difference for your child or young adult in 2022.

HAVE MORE WITH LESS
THE UNCLUTTERED LIFE
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
We’ve all heard the adage, “Less is more”. Clients of one local mother-daughter firm are living that philosophy firsthand and now teaching it to others. The Uncluttered Life®, a local home organizing company, transforms their client’s lives from overwhelming to effortless by helping them get organized and stay that way. Clients often report feeling calmer, happier, more productive, and more energized—even sleeping better.
Long before Marie Kondo was a household name, Cathy and Danica were living clutter-free lives and learning the importance of keeping only things that had meaning to them. A natural gift for creating functional, clutter-free spaces, Cathy went on to train in Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method®, eventually becoming one of only 50 people worldwide to achieve the distinction of Master KonMari Organizer.
Together with her designer daughter, Danica, they now combine the KonMari organizing style with other proven methods to create the Re:Method, a custom solution for each client. “Each person has different needs,” Danica said. “We work with each client individually to create a comprehensive solution that works for their unique needs and lifestyle.”
Hiring a professional organizer might seem like a luxury. On the contrary, Cathy says that your organizational system is the foundation for your life. Without it, life is overwhelming, chaotic and more work than it needs to be. “Studies show people living in cluttered or unorganized homes are stressed and exhausted,” Cathy said. “Our mission is to empower clients to break that cycle, so that they can live their lives without that burden.”
“Our goal is to help clients focus on the present, rather
than getting bogged down in the past,” Danica said. “There’s a heaviness that goes along with owning things that no longer fit or work for you and are just taking up space. We feel blessed to help clients streamline their lives so they feel less overwhelmed and can focus on the things that make them happy.”
Cathy comes to the table with two Masters degrees and Danica with a degree in visual studies from UC Berkeley, with a focus on art. They could have chosen many career paths. “We chose organizing because we believe in it,” Cathy said. “We’ve seen it change lives for the better.”
Danica endears herself to clients with her unique talent for finding and combining high-end and inexpensive items and achieving a designer look that’s unique to each client, capturing the essence of the person, home, or style in a seemingly effortless way.
In addition to in-home and bespoke organizing projects, The Uncluttered Life® offers a six-month and 12-month subscription service that teaches clients how to organize their own homes. Whether it’s your entire home or just problem areas such as the pantry or bedroom closet, their subscription service includes one-on-one monthly sessions to keep you on track. “We’ll teach you how to execute the process and maintain your home with life-long skills,” said Danica.

WAYS TO CLEAR STRESS FROM YOUR LIFE
BY AUDREY SELLERS
According to the Global Organization for Stress, some of the most common sources of stress include money, work, relationships, and health issues.
What can you do if stress is stacking up in your life? Try the following stress-busting hacks to clear your mind and get more joy from life.
Identify your stressors. What really sends your blood pressure soaring? Maybe it’s a particular person, activity, or situation. Before you can work to reduce your stress, you need to know what causes it.
Clear out the clutter. You can hack your way to less stress (and a tidier home and office) by getting organized. Start by throwing away or recycling what you don’t need. All those papers on your desk or countertop? File them or discard them. Visual clutter leads to stress by lowering your ability to focus.
Pare back your schedule. Stress often comes from committing to too many things at work and at home. By clearing your schedule, you’ll notice some of your stress begin to melt away. Look at your calendar and see how your time is booked. Take steps to get rid of the high-stress commitments that bring you little value or joy.
Just do it. Procrastination can be another top stressor. Instead of letting your work or personal responsibilities pile up, do them now. Set a timer and work on it for 10 minutes if a task seems overwhelming. Little by little, you’ll make progress and eliminate the stress of needing to get it done.
Be on time. Are you always running late? Your chronic tardiness can contribute to higher stress levels. Instead of rushing around, commit to being on time. In fact, aim to arrive a bit early for meetings and appointments. This simple move can dramatically lower your stress.
Say no to multitasking. Another way you can clear stress from your life is to work on one task at a time. Trying to do too many things at once can hamper your productivity, sap your energy, and add to your stress.
Watch out for secondhand stress. Just like secondhand smoke, secondhand stress can be detrimental to your overall well-being. When you’re around anxious, frenzied people, their emotions can infiltrate your life. While you can’t avoid everyone who seems to exude stress, you can learn to recognize how you feel when you’re around them. Try not to engage with their stress, and when possible, change the conversation or go for a walk.
Slow down. While there’s no magic pill for stress relief, slowing down comes pretty close. Be intentional about what you do. Take time to savor your food, admire the scenery, and enjoy the people closest to you. Do things just a little bit slower than you usually would, and you can help lower your stress.
Sweat to guard against stress. Exercise is a natural stressbuster in the moment, but it can also help you build new brain cells that are more resistant to stress. Whether you hit the trail or hop on the bike, you’ll boost your endorphins now and set yourself up for a more Zen-like future.
Pay it forward. Random acts of kindness can also help clear away your stress. When you do something nice for someone else, you feel happier. In turn, it can lead to lower stress. Try leaving some change in the vending machine at work or surprising a family member with their favorite treat.

CONCIERGE MEDICINE: IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
In a perfect world, you’d have no problem booking sameday or next-day appointments with your doctor and wouldn’t spend an hour in the waiting room when you get there. You’d never feel rushed through your appointment and could sit and discuss things like the stress you’re experiencing at work. Your doctor would inquire about your nutrition and exercise and discuss positive lifestyle changes you might make. They’d answer your questions, educate you about your wellness, consider your opinion and preferences, and, when possible, provide test results in hours, not days. If this sounds like a fairytale, you need to know about concierge medicine. Also known as boutique medicine, retainerbased medicine, or direct primary care, concierge medicine
is a model of wellness care where a menu of services is available for a monthly fee. It’s more personalized, patient-centric care with increased accessibility and convenience. Although concierge practices vary, monthly membership fees generally entitle you to office and telehealth visits, access to your doctor’s direct line, and appointments that last as long as you need. For patients with chronic conditions, concierge doctors coordinate care with specialists, hospitals, and other medical professionals. They offer patients more access to advanced tests and screenings, and doctors spend ample time discussing results and developing personalized care plans. In some cases, common medications are dispensed directly from the office at a savings.
These boutique practices are kept small, so the doctor never gets too busy to devote sufficient time to each patient. Concierge practices typically have a panel of hundreds of patients, not thousands. Doctors see six to 10 patients a day, not dozens, and spend at least 30 minutes with each. Many offer extended hours with same-day or nextday appointments available. And there’s no sparring with insurance companies or corporate-health systems, just a highly individualized doctor-patient partnership.
Some physicians have chosen to incorporate concierge medicine into their insurancebased practice, making both available in one practice.
Concierge medicine doesn’t eliminate the necessity for health insurance, though. You’ll still want insurance in case you need to be hospitalized or need to see a specialist. But because membership covers routine care, many patients find they can switch to a high-deductible health plan and save money. Additionally, some practices include fitness center access, consultation with dietitians, personal trainers, and physical therapists with your membership. So, if you’re already paying separately for these services, you can eliminate those expenses.
Membership fees and services vary from practice to practice and may increase with age. Additionally, not all services are covered by the membership fee. You may pay extra for outside labs, imaging, certain medical supplies used in your treatment, and executive health assessments.
In a nutshell, if you’re tired of the limitations of insurance-based medicine, want a more personalized, proactive healthcare experience, and are willing to pay for it, concierge care might be right for you.
IF YOU THINK CONCIERGE MEDICINE MIGHT BE A GOOD FIT FOR YOU, RESEARCH WHO’S OFFERING IT IN YOUR AREA, SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION, AND ASK THESE QUESTIONS.
1. What are your credentials and training, years in practice, hospital privileges, and board certification?
2. What cap have you put on the number of patients you see, and how did you arrive at that number?
3. Do you offer health coaching, wellness planning, weight management, hormone replacement therapy, genetic and genomic tests (or other services that interest you)?
4. Where can I find a breakdown of your services, fees, and costs?
5. Do you accept insurance for things my membership doesn’t cover?
6. What’s a typical waittime for an appointment for a concierge patient, and how long can I expect to wait once I’m there?
7. How much time do you spend with each patient?
8. Do you offer evening, early morning, or weekend appointments?
9. Do you offer concierge telehealth appointments?
10. How do you handle after-hour emergencies?
SMILES AT any age
YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD FOR BRACES
BY DAVID BUICE
If you’re an adult with a less than perfect smile and considering the possibility of braces, you shouldn’t hesitate. Whatever your age, you’re never too old to have that perfect smile you’ve always wanted, and if you’re considering braces, you are by no means alone. Some orthodontists (dentists who specialize in straightening teeth) report that up to half the patients they’re seeing are adults.
In deciding as an adult to get braces, modern dentistry offers you the choice of several paths forward.
TRADITIONAL BRACES
In the early years of orthodontics, braces consisted of a metal band placed around just about every tooth in your mouth, all connected with wires. But that’s no longer the case. In today’s dental world, braces hold wires with just a single bracket cemented to the front of the tooth, and a few bands anchor the wires on the teeth in the back of the mouth.
CERAMIC BRACES
Similar to traditional braces, the main difference is the use of clear or tooth-colored brackets instead of the conventional metallic silver or gray brackets. Some choose ceramic braces over traditional braces simply because they’re less noticeable, which can be appealing if you feel self-conscious wearing braces as an adult. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind before deciding on ceramic braces. They may not move your teeth as quickly as traditional braces, and they’re less durable than metal braces. Repairing ceramic braces may slow the straightening process.
Finally, if you engage in any contact sports or activities requiring a lot of mouth movement — like singing or public speaking — metal braces may be the better choice since they don’t chip or break as easily.
CLEAR ALIGNERS
These are clear plastic trays worn on the teeth and changed about every two weeks or so as your teeth move. They’re supposed to be worn around 22 to 24 hours a day, removed only for eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth. One of the positives about aligners is they’re less conspicuous than traditional and ceramic braces, though not entirely invisible. An important thing to remember about aligners is that using them requires a lot of self-discipline. They must be worn almost constantly, and the trays must be changed at the scheduled intervals. If you’re not faithful in doing these things, the use of aligners may take longer to straighten your teeth than traditional braces.
LINGUAL BRACES
These are similar to traditional braces, except the brackets are cemented to the back of your teeth, making them nearly invisible. They work as quickly as traditional braces, though they may be a slightly more expensive option.
ONE POSSIBLE LIMITATION
While age is not a barrier to wearing braces, gum disease may be a limiting factor. If you have active gum disease, it needs to be treated before getting braces. Once that’s done, you and your orthodontist can create your perfect smile.
Things to Consider
HOW
LONG AND HOW MUCH?
The time required to straighten your teeth depends on a number of variables, such as the severity of your dental situation and the type of appliances you decide to use. Generally speaking, treatment with braces will probably take six to 22 months.
The cost depends on the extent and type of treatment, your dental insurance benefits, and even the skill and expertise of your dentist. The orthodontist will review a treatment plan to achieve your goals and explain the cost during your consultation. If you don’t have dental insurance or if your insurance doesn’t cover everything, many dentists offer payment plans.
MORE THAN A BEAUTIFUL SMILE
Finally, braces give you more than straight teeth. They promote overall oral health by making it easier to clean your teeth properly, and they help reduce wear on your teeth over time which could help you avoid extensive restorative dental work in the long run.
GET glowing PROCEDURES TO RENEW AND REFRESH YOUR SKIN
BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
Like the rest of your body, your skin is nothing short of amazing, renewing itself in a repetitive process throughout our lives. A baby’s skin is completely renewed every 14 days. By the time we’re teenagers, though, the same process takes more like 28 days. When we’re adults, it takes between 28 and 42 days, and by the time we’re 50, skin renewal has slowed considerably, taking up to 84 days to renew itself completely. It’s no wonder our skin needs help from time to time. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to get your skin glowing again.
RADIOFREQUENCY SKIN TIGHTENING
Noninvasive radiofrequency skin-tightening delivers heat energy deep into the skin. Your body reacts with a healing response in skin cells that stimulates the production of collagen, the protein responsible for maintaining your skin’s smoothness and elasticity. The result is tighter, firmer skin in the treatment area, such as around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and neck. Some RF devices can also break up connective tissues to diminish the appearance of cellulite on the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, bra line, and back.
LASER SKIN RESURFACING
Also known as a laser peel, laser vaporization, and lasabrasion, this procedure can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and blemishes. The latest laser technology allows clinicians to be extremely precise while addressing scars from acne or chickenpox, diminishing sun damage and signs of aging, liver spots, warts, birthmarks, and shrinking enlarged oil glands in targeted areas.
MICRODERMABRASION
Microdermabrasion uses a noninvasive, minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage, and stretch marks. It can improve age spots and blackheads, treat hyperpigmentation (patches of darkened skin), exfoliate skin for a refreshed appearance, reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores, and treat acne and acne scarring.
MICRONEEDLING
Sometimes called collagen-induction therapy, microneedling involves pricking the skin with tiny, sterilized needles. Creating small wounds stimulates collagen and elastin
production, helping your skin become firmer, smoother, and youngerlooking. Microneedling can help improve acne, hair loss (alopecia), hyperpigmentation, large pores, skin elasticity, scars, stretch marks, and sun damage, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Typically, microneedling is less expensive than laser treatments and may work better for people with darker skin tones than certain laser technologies that don’t bypass skin pigmentation.
INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) THERAPY
Also known as a photofacial, IPL therapy is a noninvasive way to improve your skin’s radiance, pigmentation, and texture. IPL, which works best on lighter skin, can undo some of the visible damage caused by sun exposure on your face, neck, hands, or chest. The light energy heats the skin, motivating the body to jettison unwanted skin cells. Because it sends out more than one wavelength of pulsating light, it’s often able to treat a range of skin conditions at the same time. IPL helps reduce acne, birthmarks, stretch marks, age spots, broken blood vessels, skin discoloration, fine wrinkles, freckles, rosacea, scarring, spider veins, and unwanted hair.
Your skin is your body’s largest, most nutrient-hungry organ. Many of the things you do to keep the rest of your body healthy will also result in healthy, glowing skin. Here are some simple things you can do.
After you wash your face at night, moisturize it with virgin coconut oil or organic aloe vera.
Wear sunscreen daily with a broad-spectrum SPF of 15 or higher.
Don’t avoid the sun altogether, though. Like the rest of your body, your skin needs Vitamin D.
Don’t cleanse your face too often or over scrub, which can rob it of its natural defenses.
Avoid cigarette smoke and secondhand smoke.
Drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water daily.
Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats such as fish oils.
Eat enough fiber to stay “regular.”
Avoid junk and processed food. Take a daily probiotic supplement. Minimize your skin’s exposure to extremely hot water.
Get regular, adequate, undisturbed sleep.
Exercise daily.

TOP TRENDS IN INTERIOR LIGHTING
BY CHERYL ALEXANDER
If any feature in your home can make it look drab and outdated, it’s the lighting. However, changing out or adding new fixtures is an easy solution. Current trends offer ideas you can include in a soft home makeover that will make a big difference.
MIXED METALS
Mix metals (gold, silver, brass, chrome, etc.) on a single fixture or within a space to create a unique vibe. Pair similar metals — warm hues with other warm hues and cold tones with other cold tones — and combine different textures for a rich effect.
ARTISANAL
GLASS
Lighting fixtures made with artisanal glass celebrate the time-honored technique of molding cut-glass into sophisticated shapes and exquisitely transparent forms. One you can expect to see just about anywhere you shop is glass bubbles. Whether they cluster or cascade, glass bubbles bring whimsy and wonderment to any space.
BIGGER IS BETTER
While scale remains important, modern trends lean toward fixtures that make a big impact. Beyond lighting, these lights are centerpieces. Use such a fixture in a central area where it can create the maximum effect. Balance it with smaller fixtures around the room for the best results.
SCONCES ANY AND EVERYWHERE
Wall lamps, which save floor space and create a warm, intimate atmosphere, have made a comeback. They’re showing up in kitchens, highlighting tasks over a sink, or emitting a gentle wash of light in hallways or over a gallery wall. Eliminate the need for wiring by choosing battery-operated sconces.
MID-CENTURY MODERN AND ART DECO
Both design styles emphasize lights with clean lines, unique designs, and a balance of form and art. Art Deco focuses on sharp lines and cool geometry. Mid-century modern offers natural shapes that integrate function and aesthetics. Look for sleek geometry and daring silhouettes that make an artful presentation.
SMART LIGHTS
Several lighting products in today’s market integrate smart home technology, and light bulbs are one of the easiest ways to dive into it. Smart bulbs can completely transform the way your home looks with features like customizable dimming and programmable colors. You can control them from an app on your phone or by speaking to your voice-activated personal assistant.
LED LIGHTS
More efficient and environmentally friendly, LED lights are easy to find in a wide variety of styles and come in multiple colors, levels of brightness, and shapes. They will save money in the long run, yet the purchase cost is comparatively still quite high, so consider replacing one fixture at a time.
When considering these new options, don’t feel an urgency to make a selection. The best lighting design is the one you’ll love and that works well in your home.
Select a Fixture that Fits
Calculate Size - Select the right-sized fixture for your rooms. For instance, add the width and length of a room and use this number in inches as the approximate diameter of a chandelier. Following this example, if a room is 12 feet wide by 16 feet long, the minimum chandelier width is 28 inches.
Perfect Placement - Use oversized pendants for kitchen islands and dining areas. For vanities, choose thin, sleek, linear LED lights. Cluster pendants at varying heights add interest to living spaces and use statement lamps for sun-filled rooms.
Flexibility with Adjustable Fixtures - Select adjustable fixtures that can be twisted and turned to easily accommodate the dimensions of the space and your style preferences. Fan or Not? - Many real estate agents say ceiling fans are a modern feature buyers love to see in a home, placing them in the top five energy-efficient upgrades you can make.

MAKE WHAT’S OLD NEW AGAIN BY REPURPOSING ITEMS AROUND THE HOUSE
BY CHRISTI BLEVINS
Every day can be Earth Day when you reuse household items. Here are some fun ideas to get you started.
A CAN - DO ATTITUDE
Some houseplants can easily be propagated to create more plants. Plant your new offshoots in repurposed tin cans for a sweet, earth-friendly look. Paint the cans or keep them rustic, depending on your style.
TEE TIME
Americans generate an estimated seventeen million tons of textile waste per year. There’s no need to toss the old collectible T-shirts from every concert or special event you’ve attended. Instead, turn that T-shirt collection into a quilt. Even if you’re not a quilter, you should be able to hire someone to stitch your sentimental coverlet.
If you aren’t in the market for a new quilt, try framing your favorite tees instead. You can make your own box frames using scrap wood or try stretching a shirt over an inexpensive canvas or thrift store picture frame.
Turn your tees into grocery totes and kiss plastic bags goodbye. An online search for T-shirt totes will give you a wide variety of free patterns. Some of them are even no-sew.
You can get a double word score in the repurposing game by cutting up old tees into paper-towel size squares. Keep them in a basket on your kitchen counter and reach for one whenever you typically grab a paper towel. In the world of reducing, reusing, and recycling, this is the trifecta.
A REAL PAGE - TURNER
If an old book has lost its binding, don’t toss it just yet. Use loose book pages to create whimsical door wreaths, origami flowers, wallpaper for small spaces, and even gift-wrap.
CARDS ON THE TABLE
Christmas cards, birthday cards, anniversary cards, Valentine’s Day cards, get-well cards — we’re inundated with cards. Did you know you can recycle your cards by opening them up, cutting them on the fold line, and reusing them as gift tags or greeting cards? No one will know. It’s good for the environment and saves you money.
ON A ROLL
Even the humble cardboard tube that supported your toilet paper and paper towels can be repurposed. Fill empty paper tubes with dryer lint to use as fire starters for a campfire, fire pit, or fireplace.
JARRING REVELATIONS
It’s no surprise that old jars can be used for drinking glasses or a pen and pencil holder for your home office desk. This gives you an eco-friendly excuse to splurge on a more expensive jam in a decorative jar.
Use old glass jars to store your dried beans, rice, and dried other bulk food items. Not only are you repurposing the jars, but you are also keeping your pantry stylish, organized, and pest-free.
Old candle jars are perfect for holding small items like cotton swabs, cotton balls, and paperclips.
SCRAP IT
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, food scraps and yard waste create a combined 30% of what we throw away. Composting these materials frees up space in landfills and reduces methane production. Plus, you’re rewarded with organic material that can enrich your flower beds and gardens.
Get the Kids in on the Fun
Save items like empty egg cartons, newspaper, and paper rolls to create an enviable craft station for the children in your life. Add inexpensive craft items like pipe cleaners, construction paper, safety scissors, and the possibilities are endless. With a bit of imagination, a child can create toilet paper tube puppets, egg carton bird feeders, and so much more. Egg cartons make excellent homes for a young gardener’s seedlings, too.
Outsource Your Repurposing
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you can’t find a use for a household item, consider checking out an online “buy nothing” group. Members frequently post curbside alerts of items they are giving away, ranging from furniture to empty baby food jars. You may also find just the thing you need to complete a redecorating or craft project.

TIPS FOR A MORE ORGANIZED HOME
BY SYDNI ELLIS
s your home messy, or do you just have too much stuff? Many people tend to hold onto things they no longer want or need — like old concert t-shirts, extra coffee mugs, and anything else that we convince ourselves may be important someday. But the problem is, hanging onto this stuff turns our home into one big storage closet instead of a space you can use efficiently and enjoy. (And how often does the ambiguous “someday” really come around, anyway?) This month, go a step further in your spring cleaning and declutter your house!
Getting organized will feel good, improve the look of your home, and make it easier to truly value the things you decide to keep. Before getting started, read this quick guide on Decluttering Dos and Don’ts. Then turn on some upbeat music, grab a friend to help, and dive in!
DO START WITH TRASH
Bring a trash bag with you into each room and start your decluttering process by throwing away or recycling as many items as you can. Look for expired medications, old makeup and skincare products, receipts you no longer need, and more. You’d be surprised how big of a difference this can make!
DON’T WORRY ABOUT ORGANIZATION — YET
While it may be tempting to go on a shopping spree with new baskets and organizers, hold off on this for now. It’s easier to decide what you’re going to keep first, and then you can buy new storage containers to your heart’s content. While you’re decluttering, you can use empty cardboard boxes to store different things in for now.
DO PULL EVERYTHING OUT BEFORE YOU START SORTING
You’ve heard this advice for a reason: it really works. Seeing all your travel mugs on the counter or all your clothes piled on your bed puts into perspective how much stuff you actually own. And it’s easier to get rid of the things you never use when you compare them to the things you like. Just be sure to set aside a few hours to get this done — you don’t want to be stuck with a huge mess if you have to stop halfway through.
DON’T KEEP THINGS YOU AREN’T USING
If it’s not a seasonal item and you aren’t using it now, get rid of it! Life is too short to hang onto things just in case. Consider this permission to finally get rid of those jeans that are too small and that extra coffee maker your aunt gave you for Christmas three years ago that you never opened. It’ll feel so good!
DO GIVE EVERYTHING A SPOT
Junk drawers don’t count — if an item in your house doesn’t have a spot, either make one or get rid of it. Not knowing where something goes is a big reason your space will look cluttered.
DON’T
DISPLAY ALL YOUR DÉCOR AT ONCE
To keep from over-cluttering your home and from getting bored of your décor, don’t display all your decorations at once. If you don’t want to get rid of anything, just rotate things in and out of display and keep the rest in a storage container in the garage. This way, you can maintain a clean, simple look and still keep everything you love.
DO REMEMBER
TO KEEP WHAT YOU LOVE
Decluttering can be cathartic, but you shouldn’t feel pressured to get rid of things you love just for the sake of decluttering. It’s more about appreciating what you have and cherishing the things you love by getting rid of the things that you don’t. Because when our house is cluttered, our brains can be cluttered, too.
DON’T
WORRY ABOUT HOW LONG IT TAKES
Spring cleaning is meant to be done over an entire season, so don’t stress if it’s taking you a while to declutter your home. Once it’s finally done, maintaining the level of cleanliness and organization will be so much easier!

PLANNING AND STICKING TO A PERSONAL BUDGET
BY DAVID BUICE
First, let’s define what we’re talking about. A personal budget is simply a summary comparing and tracking your income and expenses over a set time. For most of us, a monthly budget is probably the most helpful. Unfortunately, the word budget often takes on a negative connotation as something complicated and burdensome, but it shouldn’t be seen that way. Instead, consider your budget as a means of balancing income and expenditures to accomplish your financial goals and secure your future, rather than something painful that you must or ought to do.
With a positive mindset firmly in place, here are a few suggestions for creating a monthly budget.
1. Collect the most important records and paperwork.
The more information you have, the better for budget planning. Relevant records include things like monthly pay stubs, credit card payments, recent utility and phone bills, mortgage or rent statements, car payments, any insurance payments, and grocery receipts if you have them.
2. Total your monthly income.
Be sure to include any other sources of income in addition to your regular salary. In today’s gig economy, you may have a side hustle. Make sure you include that income minus any expenses associated with it.
One added tip here is that if your monthly income varies, consider using your lowest paying month as your baseline for budgeting.
3. Use your accumulated paperwork to total your monthly expenses, separating fixed and variable costs.
Fixed expenses must be paid and tend to stay the same from month to month. These include rent or mortgage payment, insurance, car payment, childcare, and telephone and cable services, among others. If you’re planning to save and/or pay off a set amount of debt each month — like a student or car loan — be sure to include those as fixed expenses.
Variable expenses include things likely to change each month. These include groceries, eating out, entertainment, and gasoline.
4. Make necessary adjustments.
If you find that income exceeds expenses, you’re off to a good start. You can allocate some of the left-over funds for things like added retirement savings, saving toward a down payment on a second home, or contributing more to your children’s college fund.
On the other hand, if expenses exceed income, take a hard look at places where you might reduce your spending rather than taking on more debt. For example, are you using that gym membership? Do you need all those monthly subscriptions? Those “only $10 a month” charges add up quickly. If you live in an urban area with excellent public transportation or have started working in a home office, you might even consider getting rid of your second car.
The Ultimate Goal
Strange as it may seem, your goal is to budget to zero, meaning your monthly income minus expenses and savings equals zero. It doesn’t mean you’re spending every dollar you earn, but that you’re giving every dollar a job, even if the job is savings or an extra loan payment.
The 50-30-20 Budgeting Plan
If the goal is to budget to zero each month, how do you accomplish this? Many financial advisers recommend using the 50-30-20 plan as a guide.
• Allocate 50% of your income for essentials you must have, including a mixture of fixed and variable expenses — rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, gasoline, and the like.
• Allow 30% for wants, such as new clothes, eating out, entertainment, and travel.
• Reserve 20% for savings and debt repayment.
Review and Tweak
Remember, circumstances often change. You have another child, move to a different job, or a health issue arises. Given life’s uncertainties, it’s essential to review your budget several times a year and make any necessary adjustments to keep it working for you. In other words, it’s all right to be flexible. It’s a budget, not a commandment engraved in stone.

COOL OFF AND ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Where do Texans go to cool off when the weather heats up?
We head to a lake. The Lone Star State has around 7,000 lakes of varying sizes, and many of us live in a community with its own lake or one nearby. When you’re ready for a change, pack up the car, gather the kids and the dog, and set off on a lake adventure. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
CADDO LAKE – Tucked away in the Piney Woods ecoregion of eastern Texas along the Louisiana state line, Caddo Lake State Park includes an 8,493 acres National Wildlife Refuge and one of the rare natural lakes in Texas. Although strictly speaking, Caddo Lake isn’t 100% natural after being altered by a dam to raise the water level. A “sprawling maze of bayous, sloughs, and ponds” makes the 26,810acre lake ideal for canoeing and kayaking. There are campsites and a few historic cabins available if you plan on staying in the park.
The bald cypress in the lake’s shallow swamps, with “knees” that grow in the water from the trees’ roots and branches draped with Spanish moss, can give the lake an otherworldly feeling. Perhaps this is why visitors allege ghost experiences and plentiful Bigfoot sightings at Caddo Lake.
CANYON LAKE – Coined “the jewel” of the Hill Country, this reservoir on the Guadalupe River has more than 80 miles of scenic shoreline surrounded by rolling hills, and water recreation is easily accessible. Different areas of the park are perfect for camping, swimming, boating, hiking, picnicking, and shore fishing. If you don’t feel like hauling your kayak or jet skis with you, there are several places to rent them near the lake.

If you’re into horseback riding, the 3.5-mile Old Hancock Trail, located off the Northern shoreline of Canyon Lake, is a designated equestrian riding trail. Divers, however, claim the fun lies under the lake’s surface. With water clarity around 20 to 30 feet, divers find a various sunken treasures, from personal items accidentally dropped into the water to cars and boats.
LAKE LIVINGSTON – Located about 80 miles north of Houston, Lake Livingston is 39 miles long, covers 93,000 acres, and has 450 miles of shoreline. Equally impressive, the lake is kept at a constant level by the Trinity River Authority. No wonder it’s called a “water wonderland.” Of course, anglers call it something else — the Catfish Capitol. Besides catfish, Lake Livingston has crappie, largemouth bass, and white bass.
The lake also features well-maintained grills and picnic tables and is a great place to bike around. If you’re into camping, you’ll have 5,000 spacious campsites to choose from, including Lake Livingston State Park and Trinity River Authority Parks: Wolf Creek Park, which are ideal places for camping. If camping or picnicking doesn’t float your boat, you’ll find some good dining and lodging facilities located around the lake in nearby communities.
LAKE TEXOMA – This 89,000-acre manmade lake between Texas and Oklahoma was created to manage flood control of the Red River. With 1,250 miles of shoreline, including the Dennison Dam, Lake Texoma is called by many “the playground of the Southwest.” Visitors enjoy a Texas-sized variety of activities from boating, biking, hiking, and kayaking to camping, RV-ing, and fishing, including fly fishing for freshwater stripers.
Several small islands only accessible by boat, known as the “Lake Texoma Party Islands,” are favorite spots for picnicking, partying, and playing in the water. If you don’t have a boat, you can reach the islands via water taxi. In addition to fun on the water, there are numerous restaurants and entertainment venues on the shoreline. Visitors can enjoy everything from fine dining to concerts and comedy shows.
LAKE TRAVIS – Visit the State Capitol and unwind on Lake Travis on the same trip. A 63.75-mile-long reservoir on the Colorado River, the lake’s water temperature in summer months averages in the low 80s, making it an excellent destination for all kinds of water sports. You can even Scuba dive in some of the deeper spots.
If you’d rather be near but not in the water, a great selection of restaurants and music venues dot the shoreline. Or visit one of the lake’s many parks, such as Windy Point Park, Arkansas Bend Park, Camp Creek Park, and Gloster Bend Recreation Area, to name a few. If you enjoy fishing, Lake Travis is noted for its largemouth, Guadalupe, and white bass, and the kids will have a blast catching sunfish.
POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE – Don’t let the name — which harkens back to the days of fur trappers — mislead you. This picturesque, 20,000-acre lake located west of DFW is a real gem. Best known for its spectacular Hell’s Gate cliffs, a sheer, 90 feet tall break in the cliffs around the lake, P.K., as the locals call it, has clear blue water, sandy beaches, and surrounding rolling hills. It’s a popular spot for fishing, boating, and wakeboarding. If you’re looking for a party atmosphere, Hell’s Gate, which stands at the entrance to a cove at the south end of the lake, is a popular gathering area.
Dubbed “The Great Lake of Texas,” P.K. also has hiking and biking trails that extend around the park, and you can enjoy wildlife observation are all around the lake.

SIMPLE SWEETS THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN MAKE BY MELISSA TATE
SPRING SWEET & SALTY BARK
SERVINGS: 20 | PREP TIME: 20 MIN. | COOK TIME: NONE | TOTAL TIME: 20 MIN.
1 pkg chocolate candy melts | 1 pkg vanilla (or white chocolate) candy melts | ½ cup thin pretzels | ½ cup spring color M&M’s | ¼ cup Robin eggs candy (or any other Easter candy) | ¼ cup pastel-colored sprinkles
DIRECTIONS: SPRAY a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray, line with parchment paper and set aside. The spray keeps the paper from moving. CHOP the chocolate and vanilla candy melts into 1 x 1-inch pieces and place them in separate microwaveable glass bowls. MICROWAVE the chocolate melts for 30 seconds and stir. Microwave for 15 seconds and stir. REPEAT microwaving and stirring every 15 seconds until melted and smooth. As soon as you pull the chocolate candy melts out, start microwaving the vanilla candy melts the same way. WHILE the vanilla candy is melting, smooth half of the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper. ONCE vanilla candy is melted, use a spoon and dollop onto the chocolate you placed on parchment paper. DOLLOP the remaining chocolate on top of the vanilla dollops. USE a toothpick to create streaks and swirls in the melted chocolate and vanilla as you smooth it out into a ½ inch layer. USE a butter knife to break into uneven pieces or a sharp knife to cut evenly into squares.
TIPS & TRICKS: This is an easy but time-sensitive recipe. Have your work area prepared with all your sprinkles and candies placed in small bowls for easy access.
TIPS & TRICKS: Cream of coconut separates in the can. Shake well before opening and use a spoon to stir well in the can before pouring on cake.
