Christmas means many things to many people. Gifts under the tree. Cards in the mail. Turkey dinner with the ones we love. As Christians, we celebrate the birth of our Savior on Christmas, His everlasting love, and the joy and hope He brings. But for some, it’s a time of sorrow. The loss of a parent, a failed marriage, estranged children, or financial woes may feel amplified at Christmastime.

If you’re struggling this Christmas, remember Isaiah called Jesus “a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief”. Through the New Testament, He’s repeatedly “rejected by His own”. There’s nothing you’re feeling that He hasn’t felt, nothing you’ve done that He can’t forgive. You are His child, the apple of His eye. It was for you that He “put on flesh” and became man that first Christmas morning.

Let this Christmas be a new start for you. Invite Jesus into your heart and into your life. Let Him carry your burden and give you His abundant life. Things will never be the same. The words “Merry Christmas” won’t be sufficient to describe the life He longs to give you—at Christmastime and all year long.

A CHRISTMAS CONFESSION – a Christmas rebellion

Last year, sometime in early December, as I was reflecting on the upcoming Christmas season, a very radical idea crossed my mind. It was a bold and sacrificial idea. Something very spiritual. Being the great saint that I am, I knew I would have to take action on it as soon as it hit me. In that moment, I made a daring and courageous decision. I decided that on Christmas morning, the Birthday of my Savior before we ravaged through the piles of presents, we would do something we had never done before on Christmas morning. We would start a new tradition: We would pray! Oh, yes! What a grand and righteous idea this was! That’s right. Before opening all the lavish and excessive gifts that we would shower upon each other — on HIS birthday — I decided to do something crazy: I would lead my family in prayer! What a beautiful sacrifice this would be.

I assume you can sense the sarcasm in my words. The truth is that I was grieved by this idea when it crossed my mind. This “new idea” was a gentle prick from the Holy Spirit regarding something much deeper. I was grieved because it was so obvious, and yet I had missed it for so long. How could I have failed to do something so simple — so fundamental? I hadn’t just failed to do it though. I didn’t even see it. I was completely blind.

For the last twenty-one years, as a professing believer in Christ and so-called spiritual leader to my family, I somehow managed to wake up on His birthday and not even mention His name to my wife and children — not even a simple prayer of gratitude. For twenty-one years, we would rise early, completely self-absorbed, tear open a pile of gifts, and go on about our day. And then we would all claim we actually celebrated “Christ”mas. What a sham! It wasn’t my family’s fault, it was mine. I was the one who had taken the “Christ out of Christmas.” I had completely forgotten about Him. He was there in the room every one of those Christmas mornings, watching us from a quiet and lonely corner. He received no invitation to His own party. It was another painful reminder of how I had failed as the spiritual leader of my household. It was not only a reminder of my failure as a spiritual leader, but it was also a reminder of my hypocrisy. Once again in my life, I looked in the mirror, only to see a giant log in my eye; because I am one of those Christians who gets angry about what Christmas has become in America. I don’t know that this holy day could be any further from what Christ would have intended it to be. We have totally corrupted His birthday. We’ve literally taken what should be a season of quietness, prayer, reflection, and meditation upon His Word and twisted the entire thing inside out. We celebrate Him with a season of mass materialism, greed, anxiety, debt, busyness, and chaos. Instead of bringing Him gifts on His birthday — by caring for the orphans, widows, and those in need — we instead shower gifts upon ourselves. We know it’s all wrong! Our conscience convicts us.

For years, the righteous anger has welled up within me as I looked upon what everyone (else) had done to this holiday. But as I reflected on how I missed something so obvious; the Holy Spirit gave me that gentle nudge to look in the mirror. I saw a man — a “Christian” man — that has been part of the problem. A man who let his family get caught up in the traditions of men and the rituals of this world. I saw a man who had been a coward rather than a leader. A man who forgot about Jesus — on His birthday! Even now, as I type this, my heart breaks.

That simple revelation — to pray before opening presents — marked the beginning of something much bigger for our family. It marked a shift in the way we celebrate Christmas. Instead of looking around and telling everyone how disappointed I was in what this season had become, I would look inward — at myself, my family, and my home!

Along with a Christmas morning prayer, several other ideas immediately came to mind, including some new traditions to implement. Every year at Christmas time, we have a large gathering with our extended family. And while I was very anxious at first, as this was a deviation from the expected pattern that had been established for so long, I asked the group if I could read some passages of scripture and pray before we began our “Secret Santa” exchange. No long-winded sermon, just a short, heartfelt devotional of thanks and gratitude for all the Lord had done for us throughout the year. Yes, I was nervous, but guess what? Everyone loved it, and we are all excited to continue this new tradition in the coming years.

I know these are only small changes. But they are significant in my heart. They represent a new path — a new trajectory. Naturally, I cannot change everything at once. The thought of that is overwhelming. There is simply too much that needs to be unwound, and I will need the help of the Holy Spirit for many of those things.

But here is what I can do: I can implement one or two small changes or new traditions each year. Over time, with the help of the Holy Spirit, these changes will add up, and they will radically transform what the entire Christmas season looks like in our home. My prayer is that one day, others will see an entirely different version of Christmas in our home! Maybe they will see a version that doesn’t make any sense to them! A version that is perplexing and peculiar. Isn’t that what we are called to be — radically different? Isn’t that more exciting?

I know I must travel this new road even if my family and I are the only ones on it. But it would be so much more powerful if we did it together! Will you consider taking this journey with me? What if we could all, together, lead a silent rebellion in our own homes against the pattern of this world and the secular traditions of men? What if we could slowly and methodically take back Christmas? I think this is what He wants for His birthday!

MEEHAN’S CHOPHOUSE

TOASTING THE TOWN

BY DANIELLE VAN BEEST BY LAUREN MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

re you hungry?... Would you like some crab cakes?” I was busy scrolling through Lauren’s photos when Chef smiled at us. In the last hour, we pulled Executive Chef Derek Venutolo from his kitchen, asked him to whip up his famous carpaccio, AND coaxed him to change out of his well-earned, white jacket to take photos… mid-service. I have a history with big restaurants in even bigger cities, and there’s a reason why they make tv shows about executive chefs. They may be talented, but few are able to exist – let alone converse – with the non-culinary population. Those personalities work for the drama but are RARELY enjoyable in person. Warmth to staff and diners alike quite often end up on the chopping block. At Meehan’s Chophouse, the Chef’s brilliance is obvious, but it doesn’t take a backseat to Texas hospitality. Chef Venutolo is the whole package. (There is no photo of these crabcakes because I ate them. You’re going to have to order them yourself. If there were extras, I would have put them in my purse.)

THE OWNER

Tony Meehan is best known for his commercial/industrial construction company, Nationwide Construction. Tony grew up in Ireland, but Texas was always calling. Since arriving at age 19 to America, Tony believed Texas is a place where dreams are only limited by your imagination. For the past 30+ years, Meehan has called Mansfi eld his home, built and sold numerous companies, and Nationwide Construction has contributed major changes to Mansfield’s landscape: “Opening Meehan’s Chophouse seemed like a perfect way to give back to the community and breathe life into Downtown, Mansfield. My vision was to make Mansfield the DFW dining experience. You don’t have to drive to Dallas or Fort Worth, the goal is to have

Fort Worth and Dallas drive here.” Now you can experience fine dining at Meehan’s and enjoy a drink or cigar to end your night at the elegant Henry’s Cigar Lounge, next door. On December 15th, Meehan’s Chophouse will celebrate its 1-year anniversary, and it continues to draw crowds from all over DFW and beyond.

Meehan’s Chophouse is now a Mansfield staple and the talk of DFW and beyond, with diners eagerly bypassing Dallas and Ft. Worth to try Venutolo’s menu and experience the plush, leathered ambiance of Tony Meehan’s Mansfield vision: a next level steakhouse that offers top-tiered traditional fare with fl are.

THE CHEF

Chef Venutolo’s resume speaks for itself. A graduate of the Western Culinary Arts Institute, he trained and honed his skills under some of the greats of the restaurant world including 7 years under Executive Chef Matt Hewitt of The Bono’s Restaurant Group (owned by Sonny Bono’s daughter), then Executive Chef Shelly Borjorquez at King’s Seafood Company of Southern California and 555 East American Steakhouse. His talent made Fort Worth’s Capital Grille a hearty, yet refi ned Friday night mainstay for years and his talent garnered him the award for Overall Best Food at Big Taste of Fort Worth in 2014. These are impressive and well-deserved milestones – and if you ask Chef, it all comes down to his Mom. Their shared love of food and cooking together inspired his culinary dreams and her support has been an integral part of his career and success. (I thank you, Mama Venutolo, for those crab cakes.)

THE FOOD

The words Texas and steakhouse go handin-hand. What puts Meehan’s ahead of the pack is not only choice cuts of meat, but the myriad of options that cut like butter. Meehan’s offers 8 steak options ranging from a 6 oz Petite Filet Mignon to a 24 oz Prime Porterhouse. Roasted New Zealand Rack of Lamb and Grilled Double Cut Duroc Pork Chop with garlic butter are delicious butcher block opportunities. But, as everyone knows, if there’s turf there should be surf and the seafood options are as excellent as the meat: Butter Poached Lobster, Scallops, Ahi Tuna, my personal favorite, the Flame Grilled Salmon with

“ TONY AND I WANTED MEEHAN’S TO BE THE NEXT-LEVEL DINING EXPERIENCE. EXCELLENCE ON EVERY FRONT. WE’VE PUT IN THE WORK TO MAKE THIS RESTAURANT NEXT-LEVEL AND WE’RE PROUD OF IT.”
– CHEF VENUOTOLO

an olive tapenade, and if you’ve seen the Grande Seafood Tower, you know it’s something to behold.

The entrées are exceptional. And, you know a restaurant has that special something when diners are leaving reviews about the sides –and not only for the Smoked Gouda Mac ‘n Cheese (which 100% deserves an accolade in its own right) – but for the vegetables. Let me repeat that. The vegetables. Meehan’s offers elevated favorites like mashed and salt crusted baked potatoes, but even the greens have gained a cult following. When diners go to social media to praise the Grilled Asparagus (with dijonnaise and smoked paprika) and Roasted Brussels Sprouts (with Parmesan Cream), you know a restaurant and its Chef have gone above and beyond to make every dish memorable. I didn’t even get to the Baked Brie or the fan favorite Bread Pudding. (Yum.) The light as air Prime Beef Carpaccio with the magical sprinkling of sea salt and crisp, toasted garlic crostini? I ate that, too. Before the crab cakes. It was heaven.

THE RESTAURANT

Meehan’s Chophouse is fi lled with large, leather-tufted chairs and even larger wine glasses. Tables lined with white linens and an eye-catching, glassed wine wall that includes their own Signature Napa Valley wine label. The dining room is grand, the bar a beautiful prelude, and what makes Meehan’s magical is it feels warm and inviting. The linens may by starched, but there is nothing stiff about Meehan’s (unless you order a cocktail.) Every member of Meehan’s Chophouse offers you a smile, including the Chef. Tony Meehan’s vision is clear – but, oh does it sparkle.

CREATING calm

ELEVATE YOUR MIND, HEALTH, AND SPIRIT WITH MEDITATION

Humans have meditated to calm the mind, reduce stress, relax the body, and create greater inner harmony for thousands of years, with the earliest written records of meditation believed to come from the Hindu Vedas — ancient Sanskrit texts, around 1500 BCE. If you’re ready to quiet the ever-present dialogue inside your head and escape from life’s distractions for a while, give meditation a try and reap the benefits.

The physical and psychological impact of meditation includes improved focus and can boost your immune system. According to MayoClinic. com, it may be a useful addition to treatments for anxiety, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep problems, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, tension headaches, and chronic pain.

GETTING STARTED

It’s easier than you think to begin meditating, but first, let’s address the hurdle of time. If you feel you can’t fit meditation into your schedule, you’ll be pleased to know that it only takes 20 minutes daily to reap the benefits. Plus, it’s convenient. You can meditate almost anywhere, but a quiet space with calming energy away from distractions, like your bedroom or study, is an excellent place to start. As you become

comfortable meditating, you may prefer to practice it outside on a patio or deck on a nice day.

Beginners usually ease into meditation by setting aside five minutes of quality time and focusing attention on a specific object, an image, a mantra, or even deep, relaxed breathing. Wear comfortable clothing, maintain a good posture, and let stray thoughts pass through your mind without dwelling on them and without judgment.

TYPES OF MEDITATION

Keep in mind that there’s no right or wrong way to meditate. Do what comes naturally and give yourself time to build your meditation skills. Once you feel you’re ready to move on from a basic foundation, check out different types of meditation and discover which one is right for you. They include, but are not limited to:

Transcendental Meditation – Founded by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, this practice is designed to quiet the mind and induce a deep state of calm and inner peace. It’s typically taught by certifi ed TM practitioners and often involves using a mantra.

Mindfulness Meditation – According to HealthLine.com, this practice is the most popular and researched form of meditation in the West. Combining concentration with awareness, mindfulness meditation encourages being in the moment and handling thoughts by letting

them pass without taking action or making judgments.

Progressive Relaxation – Also known as body scan meditation, progressive relaxation is a great way to unwind and release tension. During this practice, you may slightly tighten and relax one muscle group at a time throughout your body or use steps of focused relaxation, often starting with your feet and toes and slowly moving up to the top of your head.

Mantra Meditation – Many teachings, including Buddhism

and Hinduism, encourage deeper levels of awareness through mantra meditation using a repetitive sound, phrase, or word, such as “Om.”

Visualization Meditation – Enhance feelings of focus and relaxation by visualizing positive images, figures, and scenes. Try using all fi ve senses when with your visualization. For instance, a scene on the beach can include the smell of an ocean breeze, the sound of palm leaves rustling in the wind, the feel of warm sand on your feet, the taste of coconut fresh coconut, and the image of a sunset gently resting on the horizon.

There’s an App for That

You can find many excellent meditation apps, including free versions to try out. The long list includes:

Calm – Offers guided and unguided meditations and ambient soundscape options. This app also lets you personalize your experience and track your mood. Calm.com

Healthy Minds Program – This userfriendly, holistic meditation app centers on fundamental concepts such as awareness, connection, insight, and purpose with a focus on the science of well-being. HMInnovations.org

Insight Timer – This free app can help

you sleep and relax, build healthy habits, and even share meditation sessions with friends. InsightTimer.com

Meditopia – This mental health companion app includes guided meditation for better sleep, relaxation, and personal mindfulness. Get started by completing your free emotional health assessment. Meditopia.com

Headspace – A multi-faceted meditation and mindfulness app, Headspace offers many well-organized meditations that gradually advance over multiple sessions. Choose from guided to less structured sessions. Headspace.com

A WELL winter

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY’S PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH IN SHAPE THIS SEASON

It’s that time of year again for colds, fl u, allergies, and, yes, COVID-19. Respiratory illnesses increase during the winter months primarily because people tend to spend more time indoors, and classrooms are a Petri dish of germs that school children bring home to the rest of the family. Researchers also say there is some evidence that cold air damages the immune system through the nose.

Since flu strains change from year to year, the antibodies we built up the previous winter may not prevent the strain of flu that’s making the rounds this winter. So, unless you’re opposed for any reason, everyone in the family should consider getting this year’s flu shot and a COVID19 booster. The RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine, which targets lower respiratory tract disease, is also available and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for adults 60 years and older.

Of course, there are several ways to keep you psychologically and physically healthy during the winter when the temperature drops and there is much less daylight. Experts say hydration is as important as it is during the summer months because heating the house and cold weather outdoors make the air dry. Keep the thermostat between 70 and 72 degrees during the day and about 68 degrees at night to provide a more restful sleep. A humidifi er in the bedroom adds moisture to the air and eases nighttime congestion.

Spend time outdoors. Kids should be out playing, and adults can walk to help minimize Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), popularly known as the winter blues. Take advantage of what sunlight there is. Dress in layers, especially if the temperature dips to freezing or below. Exercise will help you and your family avoid winter weight gain, especially during the holiday season.

Stock up in advance on throat lozenges, cough syrup, ibuprofen, decongestants, and saline nose spray so you can begin treating cold or flu symptoms when they fi rst start. Have rapid at-home tests available to help determine whether anyone in the family has COVID-19. The symptoms of COVID19, the flu, a cold, and allergies are often similar, so it’s important to know which ailment you have. Ask your primary care physician for a prescription for an antiviral medication like Tamiflu that can be

taken when a family member has been exposed to the flu and who is OK’d by the doctor to take it.

Good nutrition is important during every season but may be more crucial in the winter when our immune system is more vulnerable. Supplements such as Vitamin D, B12, C, A, and K are important for children five and younger, especially if they are reluctant to get them from natural sources such as squash, carrots, kale, and other leafy greens. Remember to consult with your child’s pediatrician before starting your child on any vitamins or supplements. Fruit also supplies vitamins, and the water content is a source of hydration. This is good advice for adults as well.

Practice good hygiene. That means washing your hands thoroughly before and after meals. Also, try to encourage children not to rub their eyes or nose and put unwashed hands in their mouths. These are the primary ways bacteria spread all year round, but winter makes all of us more vulnerable.

A good night’s sleep is vital because it gives the immune system a chance to recover, like recharging a battery. Medical experts recommend up to 10 hours of sleep for young children. In addition to sleep, adults can indulge in a massage to reduce stress. Studies also show that massages may strengthen the immune system.

Vaccine

Timing

In the early days after the COVID-19 vaccine was introduced, the Centers for Disease Control recommended a two-week wait between getting a flu shot and a COVID-19 booster. That cautious approach allowed people to recover if they had a mild reaction to either of the vaccines, which could include headache, body aches, and low-grade fever. Now, however, the CDC has approved getting both vaccines at the same time and suggests getting one vaccine in each arm instead of both in the same arm. This will spare families with children from making two trips to the doctor’s office or pharmacy. If you’re uncertain about vaccine decisions, please talk with your doctor for guidance.

FOCUS ON foreheads

SURGICAL & NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Did you know that forehead rejuvenation can address more than horizontal lines and wrinkles? Depending on the procedure you choose, you can elevate a droopy brow, smooth out the 11s — those pesky vertical lines between your eyebrows, minimize crow’s feet, and even reduce the appearance of hooded eyes. Read on to discover various ways to improve your forehead and brow area and enjoy a more youthful, invigorated appearance.

FOREHEAD LIFT

This surgical option, which may also be called a brow lift, is performed by a plastic surgeon. It refreshes your forehead, brows, and the area around your eyes by raising the forehead tissue and skin. Although there’s more downtime involved than with noninvasive or less invasive options, the results can last up to 10 years or more, and they are often dramatic.

The technique your plastic surgeon will use depends on how you’re aging and your goals. Below are a couple of popular options to consider. Ask your plastic surgeon to review all the options they perform and to compare and contrast expected results and recovery time. This will enable you to make an informed decision and feel comfortable that it’s your best option.

HAIRLINE LIFT

An incision is made across your forehead at your hairline, and then a small amount of tissue and skin is removed to lift the entire area, which can include the brows if that’s your goal. A gifted plastic surgeon with experience in forehead and brow lifts will use techniques to hide the incision at the hairline and minimize scarring. However, if your hairline is receding, you should explore different options.

ENDOSCOPIC LIFT

This minimally invasive procedure is performed through a few small incisions in the forehead at or just behind the hairline. A long, thin tube with a tiny light and camera is inserted through an incision to view the underlying muscles and tissues. Another instrument is inserted through a separate small incision to lift the tissues and anchor them in place. Ask your plastic surgeon how this option differs from a hairline lift, including the recovery period, expected results, and how long it will last. If you have a high forehead, ask how the plastic surgeon can avoid raising your hairline.

NEUROTOXIN INJECTIONS

If you only want to address lines and wrinkles, look into Botox Cosmetic, Dysort, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and Daxxify injections. These brands of wrinkle-relaxers treat frown lines, the 11s, and crow’s feet with small amounts of botulinum toxin. The procedure only takes a few minutes, and downtime is minimal. You should see wrinkle improvement in a few days, but keep in mind that it typically takes around two weeks for these treatments to take full effect.

PDO THREADS

A PDO thread lift elevates and tightens your skin with tiny polydioxanone (PDO) threads, which are inserted and anchored into different layers of the skin via thin, hollow needles. PDO threads instantly lift and tighten skin and elevate your forehead and brows in strategic areas. They help increase collagen production, which further reduces fi ne lines and smooths wrinkles. PDO threads dissolve on their own, usually within six to nine months, but the results may last up to 18 months.

Liquid Lift and Noninvasive Options

Dermal filler and neurotoxin injections tackle aging symptoms in different ways, making them a great combination if you’re a good candidate. They smooth wrinkles and lines, and the fillers also gently lift the forehead and brows by plumping the skin and restoring hollow or sunken areas such as the temples. Liquid lift results last for months, but they aren’t permanent. Subsequent treatments will be necessary to maintain your results.

Noninvasive aesthetic treatments use RF, ultrasound, and laser energy to stimulate new collagen production and tighten the skin to rejuvenate the forehead and brow area. Talk with your aesthetician to understand how effective they will be in addressing your goals and how long you should expect the results to last.

A NEW DIMENSION to your smile

3D DENTISTRY HAS ARRIVED AT A PROVIDER NEAR YOU

When we think about technology in three dimensions, the fi rst thing that probably comes to mind is 3-D movies. Sitting in the theater, wearing those cool glasses, you feel like you are part of the movie, not just watching it. And as unbelievable as it may sound, the fi rst 3-D movie was in 1922, over 101 years ago.

In real life, of course, we see everything in three dimensions –height, width, and depth. But when we read printed matter or watch TV or non-3-D movies, the images are fl at. We cannot see the third dimension, which is depth perception. So, while it may have taken a century, the 3-D revolution is here and is being utilized in numerous businesses such as architecture, interior design, and fashion design, all made possible by the advent of 3-D printing.

During the past decade, 3-D imaging has been increasingly utilized in the field of dentistry. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), images from intraoral optical scanners (IOS) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), can be uploaded to

Dr. Thomas and his staff would like to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas.

Dr. Thomas and his experienced staff are built upon providing exceptional dentistry to each patient while providing a comforting atmosphere.

When Integrity Counts... HONEST, PATIENT DRIVEN CARE SINCE 1983.

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given…and his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – ISAIAH 9:6

3-D software, giving a view of a patient’s teeth exactly as they look when a dentist says, “open wide,” and peers into your mouth. X-rays, in comparison, provide only a two-dimensional fl at image.

As patients, we really don’t have to understand how 3-D imaging works. It sounds like science fiction, and describing the process might as well be like learning a foreign language. What is important is that the technology can be used by dentists to better diagnose and treat a multitude of issues, from cavities to root canals, implants, extractions, orthodontics, bone loss, and sleep apnea. It can help a dentist better treat temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), when the jaw doesn’t open and close correctly, often resulting in pain, headaches, tooth and earaches, and even Tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears.

3-D imaging now allows for fitting and attaching a crown or bridge in one visit.

A dentist takes a scan of the patient’s mouth and then designs the crown or bridge using 3-D software so that it will perfectly match the patient’s bite. The resin used for the crown is poured into the tray of a 3-D printer, and about 15 minutes later, a crown is produced. The crown is washed and dried in a special unit and then cured under ultra-violet light.

The dentist then refines the crown with hand tools before attaching it to the patient’s mouth with the standard adhesive that has always been used. The crown or bridge can be brushed and polished just like the ones made the old-fashioned way. Instead of two weeks, a patient can have a new crown fitting perfectly in less than an hour.

We know how dental technicians usually take X-rays. They use an X-ray holder for the fi lm that fits uncomfortably in every part of your mouth and exposes the patient to a couple of seconds of

radiation with each X-ray. That is why patients have a protective vest placed on their chests. In 3-D imaging, a patient either lies back in the chair or sits upright with their jaw on a chin rest while the scanner rotates around the head, taking hundreds of images. There is a slight amount of radiation, but a good deal less than when a patient has traditional X-rays. It is non-invasive, which makes it much more comfortable than having a full-mouth series of X-rays with a fi lm holder. And if you are wondering, no one is wearing 3-D glasses.

The result is that a dentist has a more complete and accurate view of the patient’s mouth and can identify potential issues before they surface. Let’s face it; it is not easy for a dentist to have a great view of the back of a patient’s mouth during an exam. While experts say there will be a learning curve as dentistry evolves fully into 3-D imaging, the results should make visiting the dentist a little more pleasant.

The Cost of 3-D Dental Imaging

We can all agree that 3-D Dental Imaging is safer and gives a more accurate view of a patient’s mouth, jaw, and head. But what is the price tag? That depends on whether you are paying out-of-pocket, have dental insurance, and how much is covered by your provider. The cost of a typical 3-D scan ranges from $150.00-$700.00. Your insurance provider should pay all or most of the cost as more dentists convert to 3-D imaging and have the technology available in their offices. It is the future of dental imaging and, in the long run, may save the patient and provider money if potential problems are found early. The best advice is to ask your dentist if they are converting to 3-D imaging and check with your healthcare provider in advance to see how much, if any, is covered.

TEETH tips

ARE YOU BRUSHING RIGHT? AND MORE THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW

My dentist recently told me the craziest thing. I brush my teeth too much. Did you know that was a thing? Brushing your teeth is such a fundamental part of adult life that few of us stop to consider whether we’re doing it right. Of course, like anything, there are different schools of thought. But here are some things to consider in your day-to-day dental routine.

DON’T BRUSH AFTER EATING

Well, not immediately after eating anyway, and specifi cally not after eating something acidic. That’s because doing so may affect your tooth enamel. The Mayo Clinic warns if you’ve consumed acidic foods such as oranges, grapefruits, or lemons, brushing too soon can negatively affect your teeth. That’s because these acidic foods tend to weaken the tooth’s enamel, and brushing immediately after can remove it.

The American Dental Association suggests brushing your teeth at least 60 minutes after eating or drinking. (Sorry to say, the same goes for after you vomit.) Waiting an hour allows your saliva to wash away food particles naturally and your mouth time to balance its pH level.

WHAT’S THE RIGHT TOOTHBRUSH?

The American Dental Association recommends a toothbrush with either multi-level bristles or angled bristles because they seem to remove more plaque than those with conventional “flattrimmed” bristles. They also recommend a toothbrush with soft bristles because, although medium bristles are effective at biofi lm removal, they may come with a risk of gingival (gum) abrasion. ADA.org includes a list of recommended toothbrushes.

DON’T RINSE AFTER YOU BRUSH

After you brush your teeth, it’s better to spit out excess toothpaste but not rinse your mouth because it will wash away concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste, diluting and reducing its preventive effects. For the same reason, don’t use mouthwash immediately after brushing. Instead, consider brushing in the morning and at night, then rinsing with a mouthwash containing fluoride in the middle of the day. Afterward, refrain from eating or drinking for 30 minutes.

Electric or Manual Toothbrush?

On their website DentalHealth.org, the nonprofit Oral Health Foundation wholeheartedly recommends electric toothbrushes siting a recent 11-year study which found that “people who use an electric toothbrush have healthier gums, less tooth decay, and also keep their teeth longer, compared with those who use a manual toothbrush.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Oral Health Foun dation, Dr. Nigel Carter, OBE, concluded, “Electric toothbrushes, especially those with heads that rotate in both directions or ‘oscillating’ heads, help keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay.”

However, the American Dental Association (ADA) says either manual or powered (electric) toothbrushes can be used effectively, although powered toothbrushes may be preferable for individuals with dexterity problems, such as older adults, those with disabilities, and children. Also, those with dental appliances, such as braces, may find an electric toothbrush easier to use. So, it seems the choice is up to you and your personal preferences.

FESTIVE FOCAL point

HERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO MAKE YOUR MANTEL MERRY THIS YEAR

When I envision Christmas on the Pinterest board in my mind, I think of a roaring fireplace, hot cocoa, and several pairs of feet in fuzzy socks cuddled up in front of the fire. The backdrop is, of course, the living room mantel, all decked out for Santa’s arrival down the chimney. No matter your decor style, there is a mantel decoration to leave you dreaming of sugar plums, so let’s explore a few options to make your Christmas mantel shine.

WOODLAND RUSTIC

Focal point: Multiple coordinating details

This rustic mantel coordinates the wood’s warmth with the stockings’ texture. A Christmas tree lot sign overlooks the

herringbone and reclaimed brick fi replace. A rustic sled is propped up with the hope of a white Christmas, and the mantel is peppered with smaller green trees throughout to complete this outdoorsy look.

NO MANTEL, NO PROBLEM

Focal Point: Apothecary Cabinet

Not every home has a fi replace, and if that is the case, do not worry! Any piece of furniture can act as a focal point. In this case, a large antique apothecary cabinet is the home for the stockings and garland, exactly as a mantel would. Consider using a media cabinet, console table, sideboard, or any centrally located focal piece as the makeshift mantel.

VINTAGE WHIMSY IN RED, WHITE, AND METALLIC

Focal point: Jolly Santa Art

If vintage whimsy is more your Christmas fancy, enlist a jolly Santa face to watch the living room. This look begins with traditional Christmas red and white, then adds in metallics to keep those classics fresh and a bit unexpected. An evergreen garland loaded with colorful ornaments and striped red and white knit stockings trims out the mantel, peppered with bottled brush trees and vintage reindeer. Various metallic Christmas trees are housed in vintage tins, and birch logs and reclaimed wood candlesticks fi ll the fi replace hearth. This scene could be successfully set with any number of these items and allowing them to work in concert together creates a festive overall mood.

EVADING THE elements

SIX WAYS TO WEATHERIZE YOUR HOME

A changing of the seasons may mean adjustments to your routine and updates to your home decor, but it also brings maintenance and upgrade opportunities for homeowners. As temperatures shift and seasonal weather rolls in, weatherizing can help you conserve energy, save money, and improve comfort, all while protecting the exterior (and interior) of your home.

HAVE HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS INSPECTED

Turn to the professionals to have your furnace and air conditioning inspected before temperatures change. They can make sure the system is working properly so you can have heat or cool air when you need it while conducting safety checks to keep your family safe from carbon monoxide

leaks and other hazards. Plus, having your system inspected before extreme weather means necessary repairs can be completed before you rely on it for comfort.

TRIM TREES

Your trees and shrubs might provide a beautiful aesthetic in spring and summer, but winter weather can turn them into hazards for your home. Heavy winds and snow and ice buildup can cause branches to break off and damage roofs, windows, and more. Some experts recommend waiting until leaves fall to prune; be sure to research the types of trees on your property and understand the best maintenance methods to keep them healthy without putting your home at risk.

REPLACE YOUR FRONT DOOR

Living in a comfortable, energyefficient home starts with keeping out rain, wind, cold, and heat. For a protected and weather-proof home, consider replacing your front door with a premium alternative like the Masonite Performance Door System,

designed to keep the outside out and the inside in. Available with a variety of exterior fiberglass doors in a multitude of styles, colors, and fi nishes, including multiple glass options, the system’s industry-leading 4-Point Performance Seal provides superior energy efficiency, performance, and comfort. The system is backed by a 10-year limited full replacement warranty and is available at home improvement retailers nationwide.

CLEAR GUTTERS

While it’s a bit of a dirty job, clearing gutters of debris and buildup like leaves and twigs keeps the system running as it should. Gutters can’t properly drain when they’re blocked, which means water isn’t being diverted properly. This leads to water spilling over and can cause problems ranging from mold or mildew to larger issues like foundation damage.

SECURE OUTDOOR FURNITURE

It may cause a bit of sadness to put the patio furniture away for the season. Still, it’s an essential step in protecting the furniture and your home from high winds that can pick up during colder

months or increased moisture during the rainy season. Some pieces may need to be stored away, while others can be covered, but you should clean and carefully dry them beforehand to avoid mold and mildew growth. Take advantage of the opportunity to thoroughly clean grease and grime off grill grates, repair damaged furniture items, and clear the entire area of dirt and debris so everything’s ready to be dusted off and enjoyed in the spring.

HIRE A ROOF INSPECTOR

The roof is a critical component in keeping your home structurally sound. A professional can examine your roof for damage and assess anything that may need fi xing or replacement ahead of winter weather or rain. This examination includes shingles, soffits, fascia, chimneys, gutters, and more, along with a check for signs of interior damage like water stains, mold, holes, or wood rot.

SINGING A NEW

It May be Time to Say Goodbye to an Old Friend CAR TUNE

Maybe it was your first ride and has sentimental value. Or maybe it is the car in which you drove your wife and newborn child home from the hospital. And maybe your reasons for holding on to that old car of yours are strictly economic: You own it outright after paying off an auto loan. But inevitably, the day comes when you realize your car is in the repair shop more than it is in your driveway, and it is time for a new set of wheels.

It is not an easy decision, and even experts are divided over the best time to go shopping for another car. Some advocate driving your car until the wheels fall off, especially if you don’t take long trips and you work remotely. Other auto experts say pay attention to math. For example, the American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that repairs and maintenance of older models can cost up to 16% of owning a vehicle. An analysis by Consumer Reports found that the cost of maintaining a car doesn’t begin to rapidly escalate until the car is five years old.

Other factors are also at play in the decision to get a new car. Older models may not have the technological advances that new cars have, such as advanced front, side, rear, and even knee airbags. They may not have a backup camera, blind spot sensors, keyless ignition, wireless phone chargers, lane keeping assist, forward collision mitigation, automatic emergency braking, GPS, and tire pressure monitoring, among other bells and whistles that make it safer and more comfortable for you and your family. New models are more environmentally friendly and have better fuel efficiency than older gas guzzlers, which saves you money in the long run.

A few things to remember are that newer cars are run by computer chips, and getting an extended warranty covering mechanical and electric issues is almost mandatory and will add about $3,500 to the cost. Factor in that your old car may not be worth much as a trade-in, and auto insurance will likely increase as well. But consider whether gas efficiency savings and no repair costs outweigh or cancel out those expenses. You have probably heard the adage, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Before going to a dealership, use websites like Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, TrueCar, Consumer Reports Car Value Estimator, and others to determine your old car’s worth. Instead of a trade-in, you might consider selling it privately. Parents with a son or daughter reaching driver’s age or going off to college may be willing to spend a little more to buy your car. Hopefully, you have kept the maintenance and repair records and agree to let the prospective buyer have the car inspected. The hassle might be worth it and give you additional cash for a down payment on a new car.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE CAR SHOPPING

In addition to knowing the value of your trade-in, avoid buyer’s remorse by thoroughly researching the price and availability of a new car. If your family is growing, you might want to look at an SUV or perhaps a minivan. Would you pay more for a hybrid and recoup that money over time by making far fewer trips to the gas pump? Many auto websites give you the opportunity to “build” your car, picking the trim package that best suits your needs. And look at different makes and models. Then, you can contact a dealership online and make an appointment to test drive the car you want. If you are interested in a Honda CRV, for example, also test drive a Nissan Rogue, a Toyota Rav4, and Mazda CX-5. With the exception of buying a house, a new car will probably be your most significant expense, that is until those kids go to college.

‘Tis the Time to ast

WAYS TO ELEVATE YOUR HOLIDAY CHEERS

While the choice of spirits and mixers is crucial, the vessel from which you sip your concoctions can upgrade the entire experience. Here are a few cocktail glasses that will showcase your festive libations.

Splendor for Special O asions

For those extravagant holiday affairs, turn to goblets to add a touch of drama to your festivities. The wide bowl allows for ample aeration, allowing the complex flavors of your concoction to unfold. Their grand size lends an air of majesty to your gatherings, making them the ultimate choice for those special, once-in-a-lifetime holiday soirees.

Copper mugs are synonymous with the Moscow mule, where the frosty exterior and the metal’s coolness enhance the cocktail’s crispness. But they are also perfect for a dark ‘n’ stormy (similar to a Moscow mule but rum instead of vodka) or tonic-based drinks. The rustic charm of copper adds a festive touch to your gatherings, making these mugs a must-have for any winter celebration.

Their tall, slender design allows for plenty of ice and mixers, making them ideal for refreshing, spirit-forward cocktails. These versatile glasses transition effortlessly from casual gatherings to formal affairs, making them an essential addition to your glassware collection.

With a stem or without, flutes, with their slender, elongated design, are the epitome of refinement. Perfect for sparkling cocktails, they showcase the effervescence of Champagne-based libations, adding a touch of class to your toasts.

Rocks glasses, sturdy and dependable, are the epitome of comfort during the holidays. They’re ideal for an old fashioned or sazerac, serving spirits neat or on the rocks, allowing you to savor the nuances of aged whiskey or velvety eggnog elixir.

World A Wonderful

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AND CELEBRATIONS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

Years ago, after my daughter completed a college semester in England, I thought I’d surprise her with a traditional English Christmas. It was fun researching the holiday customs of another culture, but it was no easy task finding a Christmas goose in a U.S. grocery store. If you’d like to shake up your traditional U.S. Christmas, here are some fun alternatives from other cultures.

Deck The Halls

Ever notice how families decorate their Christmas trees on Christmas Eve in movies and TV shows? Who does that? Folks in Austria and Germany, that’s who. In those countries, it’s traditional to decorate the tree on Christmas Eve morning and then wait to turn on the lights that night. Whenever you decide to put up your tree, consider including ornament options from other countries. In Germany, a pickle ornament is hidden somewhere within the tree. The first child who spots it either receives a small gift or the honor of opening the first gift on Christmas morning. You might also include woven paper hearts from Denmark, lucky spiderweb ornaments from Ukraine, or straw “Yule goats” from Sweden.

Shake up Your Menu

In Central and South America, Hanukkah festivities often include dishes of fried plantain, whereas, in India, they conclude the Hanukkah meal with a dish of barfi, a dessert of milk and fruit, and jelly doughnuts known as sufganiyot. Enjoy a Parisianstyle Christmas Eve feast known as Reveillon, which includes foie gras, oysters, and 13 desserts, including

canned fruit, marzipan, and a Yule log cake. If you’re a fish lover, celebrate Christmas Italian style with a seafood-heavy meal known as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. In Portugal, families enjoy a small Christmas Eve meal called Consoada with codfish, potatoes, and a variety of puddings. Italians and Peruvians both enjoy homemade fruit cake. The traditional Christmas dish in Costa Rica is tamales. And in Africa, the Kwanzaa meal is usually synonymous with curry.

Other Fun Traditions

Here’s a tradition I love. In Iceland, exchanging books on Christmas Eve is traditional, then snuggling up somewhere to eat chocolate and enjoy your new read. (Yes, please.) In Japan, families give their homes a good, deep cleaning during the holidays to get a fresh start for the new year. In Ireland, it’s traditional to leave a candle in the window — day or night, to welcome your guests. And in the Netherlands and Germany, children put out their shoes rather than their stockings to be filled with treats.

Miscellaneous Holiday Happenings

I haven’t even gotten to the pooping Christmas log of Catalonia, skating to Christmas mass in Venezuela, surfing Santas in Australia, hiding the brooms on Christmas Eve in Norway, nativity scene radishes in Oaxaca, Mexico, or Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas Eve in Japan. However you choose to celebrate your holidays — whether you stick with your own traditions or try out some new ones — may your special days be filled with family, friends, and fun.

How They Celebrate

Around the globe, families celebrate much more than Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, Including:

• Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated in many countries each December 6 with the exchange of small gifts and stockings full of candy and treats.

• Saint Lucia Day is a Swedish holiday during which children wear white, carry candles, and provide their families with sweet treats.

• The winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, is December 21. In Japan, it’s traditional to enjoy a hot bath infused with citrus fruit to help ward off colds and flu.

• Little Christmas Eve is celebrated in Norway on December 23 as a time to gather with immediate family and have fun making and decorating gingerbread houses.

• Three Kings Day is celebrated in Venezuela and the Philippines on January 6 with celebration, gift exchange, and feasting.

• In Louisiana and other places celebrating Mardi Gras, king cake is eaten on January 6 in honor of the epiphany, said to be when the three wise men visited Baby Jesus. A plastic baby is hidden inside the cake, and whoever gets the doll is responsible for throwing the next king By Mimi Greenwood Knight cake party, continuing until Lent begins the day after Mardi Gras.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

San Antonio Street Party at Hemisfair Park

San Antonio invites you to a free yearly celebration hosted by their Parks Foundation to watch fireworks and enjoy live music on December 31 at Hemisfair Park. Past events welcomed over 70,000 people of all ages with rides, food, carnival games, and a familyfriendly atmosphere. Revelers often end the party draped in beads and beaming from behind their glittering, novelty New Year’s Eve glasses. With a title like “The Fireworks Capital of Texas,” you know you’ll get a great

production from South Padre Island on New Year’s Eve. Restaurants across the Entertainment District happily serve island fare and libations as you wait for the 9:15 PM fireworks show this year, but you can also bring a picnic and chairs to sit out and watch at The Green. Parking there is free but also first-come, first-serve. Lucky viewers will find themselves near the 60-foot Ferris wheel in Gravity Park. The park’s go-karts, mini-golf, and reverse bungee jumping are great ways to spend the last day of the year. SoPadre.com
