Swettes’ $10M gift endows football coaching position Brian and Kelly Swette’s faith in Arizona State Head Football Coach Kenny Dillingham led them to establish the Swette Family Endowed Football Coach position. Their $10 million gift is the largest endowed leadership position in Sun Devil Athletics. “It’s time for the alumni base, business community and our political leaders to embrace our athletic programs,” Brian Swette said. “We’ll never have a better coach. Kids love coming here.”

Miller made lasting impact on Sun Devil Football Sun Devil Football lost a beloved member of its family last spring when Steven Miller passed away. The former ASU offensive lineman, who had served as assistant strength and conditioning coach the past three seasons, was a valued member of the football program for nearly a decade. A Gilbert High School graduate, Miller played for ASU from 2016–19. Over those four seasons he started 35 games, including all 13 of the 2017 and 2019 seasons. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies, with concentrations in business and education studies, in 2018. While Miller’s contributions on the field were significant, it is his legacy of putting others first and being there for his brothers that will live on within the program. He is deeply missed.

A training facility worthy of champions Arizona State’s new indoor football and volleyball training facility represents an elite commitment to player development that will help the Sun Devils recruit and maintain the nation’s best athletes. Align Technology has made a naming-rights gift toward the construction of the facility, which will be built directly next to the north end of the stadium and is scheduled to open in 2028. This state-of-theart facility will transform how ASU student-athletes train, prepare and compete. A full outdoor field and an additional half field will give athletes flexibility to maximize reps and Game Day readiness. Arizona State ushered in a new era of Sun Devil Football when alumnus Kenny Dillingham was named as the 26th head coach of the program on Nov. 27, 2022. Three seasons since, Sun Devil Football is as relevant as it has been in decades. Dillingham led ASU to a dream season in 2024 that included a Big 12 Championship, a berth in the College Football Playoff and an unblemished home record for the first time in 20 years. Dillingham and his wife, Bri (also a Sun Devil graduate), have two sons, Kent and Heath. The latter was added to the family in January 2026.

Football History
Sun Devil history and traditions A rich culture of unique traditions has grown around Sun Devil Athletics since 1899. Here are some of the most popular. The Territorial Cup The ASU and U of A rivalry culminates in the Territorial Cup, the oldest rivalry trophy in college football. The cup was first awarded in 1899, 13 years before Arizona became a state. After disappearing for decades, the original trophy was found at the office of the ASU Alumni Association in 1980. The series now encompasses the 22 Division I sports in which both schools compete; the university with the most points at year’s end earns the trophy. 14

1987 Rose Bowl champions The 1986 Sun Devils were LA kings. ASU finished 10-1-1 that season and claimed the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl titles. In doing so, they won three times in Los Angeles, becoming the first team in league history to win at UCLA and USC and then bring home the Rose Bowl title from Pasadena. The Sun Devils’ 22-15 victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl was spearheaded by Player of the Game Jeff Van Raaphorst, who attended high school in Southern California. 20

Football History The Sun Devil Football team annually volunteers at Pat’s Run.
Pat’s Run Pat’s Run is held every April and attracts thousands of participants to honor Pat Tillman’s legacy and fundraise for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses. The 4.2-mile race symbolizes Tillman’s ASU jersey number and ends on the 42-yard line at Mountain America Stadium. Plan to sign up for the 2027 Pat’s Run at veterans.asu.edu/patsrun. 22

Historic victories Head Coach Kenny Dillingham picked up two of the biggest wins for his Sun Devil Football program in Mountain America Stadium during the 2025 season, when Arizona State knocked off then-No. 24 TCU, 27-24, and then-No. 7 Texas Tech, 26-22, over a three-game span. The two ranked victories concluded a 10-game home winning streak for ASU, the longest since the Sun Devils won 14 straight during the 1980–82 seasons.
