eld against the backdrop of Sedona’s breathtaking red rock vistas, the Sedona Arts Festival presents its 27th annual fine art festival Saturday, Oct 7 and Sunday, Oct 8. Attracting artists from New York to California, this renowned festival will showcase a diverse line up of 125 juried artists as well as live music, food, and art fun for the kids. The Sedona Arts Festival is held on the campus of Sedona Red Rock High School, 995 Upper Red Rock Loop Road in West Sedona. Returning this year are Overall Best of Show artist Duane Maktima (jewelry) and category honorees Donna and Jeff Tousley (ceramics), Michael McKee (drawing), Richard Turner (sculpture), Virginia Kerr (fiber), Scott Thompson (glass), Melissa Hollis (metal) and Tim Mooney (painting). Continuous live music is an integral part of the festival each year and this year’s selection of artists will not disappoint. Local favorite William Eaton will Sedona Arts Festival headline the festival. Eaton is acknowledged as one of the world’s great designers of stringed instruments. A four-time Grammy Nominee, Eaton’s unique and Sat., October 7 • 9 am - 5 pm original sound has been captured in collaborations with R. Carlos Nakai and as Sun., October 8 • 10 am - 4 pm the leader of the William Eaton Ensemble: an eclectic “world chamber fusion” group whose releases have earned Billboard Critic’s Choice awards as well as Admission is $12 at the gate; charting in the top ten World album category. $10 online in advance. publisher’spage THE CHANGING COLORS OF AUTUMN Now that summer has yielded to fall, the Grand Canyon State begins a months long period of perfect weather. Cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours send a signal to the trees, and they respond with an explosion of autumn colors. If you enjoy nature, hiking, and leaf peeping, then October will reward you with a spectacular display of nature’s grandeur. So grab a light jacket, hiking shoes, a camera, and embark on a trip to experience the changing colors of the leaves. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is spectacular. The journey crosses the Colorado River and traverses the red rocks of Marble Canyon and the Vermilion Cliffs. As you climb the Kaibab Plateau, stunning Aspen groves reward your trek. The Kachina Trail, located in the San Francisco Peaks north of Flagstaff, meanders across the middle of the mountains while passing through Conifer groves and Aspens. Old growth forests at higher elevations contain Limber pines and Douglas firs. Lower elevations greet you with rising Ponderosa pines. You can drive the scenic length of Route 89A, or walk along the West Fork of Oak Creek. Incredible red rock scenery, towering cliffs, and the babbling creek add to nature;s painting of deep red and scarlet leaves. (www.fs.usda.gov/coconino) Rising to an elevation of about 8,400 feet, the Hualapai Mountains are topped with Ponderosa pines and aspens. To navigate this forest labyrinth, hike the Potato Patch Loop as it weaves and circles Aspen Peak. In addition to a wonder color palette, the trail provides a nice adventure complete with twists, turns, and giant boulders. From the stunning vistas of the Basin and Range province of Southern to Central Arizona, to the rugged beauty of the Transition Zone of Central to Northern Arizona, and to the Mogollon Rim cliffs and forests of the Colorado Plateau in Northern Arizona, the Arizona State Park system provides a kaleidoscope of fall colors. As October progresses, be sure to visit Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park to witness first hand the grove of burgundy Chinese pistachios, Sycamores and Varnish trees. or three years the Town of Carefree has hosted world renowned pumpkin carver and master sculptor, Ray Villafane. The popularity of the original Enchanted Pumpkin Garden reaches all ages and has gone viral on social media and every local TV outlet and network as far as Japan. The one-of-a-kind exhibit will be open to the public and woven through the four acre Carefree Desert Gardens, October 20 -29, 2017, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., 101 Easy Street, Carefree, Arizona. Over 60,000 visitors are anticipated to stroll this artistic exhibit over 10 days both day and night. The evenings are even more beautiful in Carefree and on any given day or evening you will run into Ray Villafane working on a pumpkin or running back and forth to his Gallery just a block from the Gardens. Four talented sculptors make up Villafane’s team in Carefree, and on any given day they are available to talk to guests and show them the tricks to carving a great pumpkin. The event offers up-close and personal experiences for the entire family. Count on the 400+ colossal pumpkin Ray and his team conquer every year for families to take photos and touch. In addition to the colossal pumpkin, playful pumpkins are relaxing all over the village in the Desert Gardens. Featured, and not found anywhere else, are the ten 3D pumpkin faces preserved and displayed in tanks that resemble a Saguaro. Ray also introduced his handcrafted scarecrows in 2016 made mostly of local, organic materials, which were a hit with kids and seniors wanting to catch a photo. He plans to feature a few new ones this year. Every day is different in the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden so visitors tend to return two or three times. eneto Trattoria in Scottsdale makes Valley restaurant history on October 13th marking their 20 year anniversary. That’s 20 years in the same location, with the same owners, same chef and numerous original staff members – not a common occasion. Susan and Roberto Rossi, founded Veneto Trattoria in 1997 in Hilton Village, at the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and McDonald Dr. Rossi’s envisioned an authentic trattoria, like the warm and friendly small neighborhood restaurants of Roberto’s native Veneto region. Their goal was to serve authentic Northern Italian cuisine typical of Venice and the Veneto region, prepared with fresh ingredients, lightly seasoned, the cuisine typical of the Mediterranean diet. “Our goal today remains the same,” explains owner, Roberto Rossi, “we want the dining at Veneto Trattoria to be as close as possible to dining in Venice.” Diners at Veneto value the consistency of the menu, dishes taste the same as they did on opening day. Most pastas and all desserts are made in house. Signature dishes include two items rarely found on US menus, baccala mantecato which is Venetian style cod, and a customer favorite, fegato alla veneziana, Italian for calf liver with golden onions. A $20.00 three-course choice dinner menu highlights Veneto’s anniversary celebration, which starts on Friday, October 13th and extends through Friday, October 20th. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and serves dinner from 5:30 until 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. “Our staff is an extended family and customers enjoy being recognized and greeted by name. Red?

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron! The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red! The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. HOWLY GROWLY OWLY FESTIVAL Weekends in October

Hoot & Howl Your Way through Bearizona during the Howly Growly Owly Festival Bearizona is hosting Howly Growly Owly Festival weekends in October. Visitors are encouraged to dress up in costume and kids that do can go to the gift shop to get a “beary” special treat! Park hours throughout the month of October are 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

FESTIVITIES INCLUDE: Howl-O-Ween Express: Hop on the windowless bus that takes visitors through the drive-thru animal exhibits. This is about as close as you are going to get to our animals, so you don’t want to miss out. Patrons can howl with the wolves in the Alaskan Tundra & Arctic Wolf enclosure and watch the bison interact with a special Howl-O-Ween enrichment treat. Bus rides depart from the Fort Bearizona parking lot at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. & 3:30 p.m. every day in October.
