REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Hope everyone had a great winter! Snow is hopefully coming tonight in Colorado as I write this in late March and we are desperate for it. So dry this winter on the Front Range and our pastures are begging for moisture. Show season is coming into focus now in the upper part of our region and winding down a bit in our southern areas. The same holds true around most of the rest of the country and there are plenty of clinics and educational events to choose from in most areas. The Colorado Horse Park and Rocky Mountain Dressage Society are hosting a wonderful education symposium May 20-24 with Axel Steiner, Lars Petersen, Scott Hassler, Michael Klimke and Steffen Peters. Mark your calendars! RMDS is also hosting an instructors’ continuing education with Lars Petersen on May 1819. This is a working closed session for instructors only to work on teaching and training techniques and is always well received. If you are interested, please contact Beth at rmds@rmds.org. The Arizona Dressage Association will be having Janet Foy October 14-15 for a symposium addressing Improving Your Judging Eye and Showing Skills. It will be a great event, so plan to join them. Please be sure to let me know if your barn, GMO, club, chapter or other groups are hosting events and we’ll get them in our monthly USDF GMO newsletter that contains great links to all the Regions and on the Region 5 website. We want to let our members know about as many dressage opportunities as we can. The deadline for Participating Member Delegate nominations is April 15. Our region will have 5 PM delegates for the 2017 USDF Convention in Lexington, Kentucky November 29-December 2. You can check the status of our delegate nominees by going to the link below. Please check your status to make sure your acceptance is there if you would like to be a PM delegate candidate. If you are not listed and you would like to be a PM delegate, please contact Eva Maria Adolphi at adolphi@burgoyne.com. Please do not commit to be a delegate unless you know you can attend. As of May 16th, our potential candidates for the 2017 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Saugerties, New York will be finalized. My ADA Scholarship by Lynn McKinney
I was delighted to learn that I had been selected as an adult amateur scholarship recipient for the 2016 year. Initially, I thought it would be great to go do California for a great long weekend, but in the long run decided to utilize my award toward riding in as much clinic time as possible with David Wightman. In the spring, when David came to town we were working on the PSG movement, but had been struggling with connection and maintaining the suppleness needed. We started on a large 20x24 meter oval and really asked Plato to leg yield away from my inside leg and maintain a supple inside rein. When that was satisfactory, we started on breaking the pieces of the PSG test into more manageable pieces. For the half pass to half pass, I was being pretty casual in the first half, and had many moments of hearing “ No, go back and do it again” until I was better prepared in the corner and was starting the half pass immediately out of the corner rather than drifting past F, then starting the half pass. A great tip was to straighten before the centerline to a slight leg yield before asking for the flying change and starting the new half pass. The second day, we started with the same warm up with leg yielding on the open side of the oval and getting that inside left active and stepping up. After our warm up, we rode through the PSG test with David making corrections and comments throughout. When we finished the ride, David encouraged me to work on developing better flow in the test before trying to show again, and although I was disappointed at the time, I knew it was the best decision.

I did take Plato to California for the summer show in August, and as many of you know, I received a 64% in the PSG class, and that was the final score I needed
for my silver medal! When David returned in the fall, we started schooling the movements for the I1 test, and I received great tips for breaking down the canter zig zag test. Rather than riding the entire movement, I was instructed to break down each piece of the half pass, with a nice forward canter into a flying change with a lot of jump rather than the “proppy” canter that was resulting from trying to cram too much information into a single line. We continue to work on this every week, sometimes working on tempi changes or sometimes asking for full pirouettes. The main focus has been on improving the quality of the gaits and not allowing myself to get casual in accepting less than ideal suppleness. This next year is going to be a very exciting year, and I look forward to seeing all of you at X. 10 | THE CENTERLINE | APRIL 2017

PLATO EN ROUGE, 2003–2017

Some horses touch our lives in ways we never anticipate, and Plato was that horse for me. It started back in 2006 when I was looking for a new horse. I went out to Noelle Carlier’s farm, and she brought out this gangly 3-year-old that had just returned from his 30-day tour. He was tall, scrawny, and had the sweetest face, with that big white blaze. During my test ride on him, as we were careening around the arena like a car on two wheels, we passed a large water bucket. Right then, a Jack Russell terrier jumped out of the water. Amazingly, Plato just kept on going, and never acted like anything unusual had occurred. That’s when I knew he was the one for me. Fast forward several years. I earned my bronze medal and bronze freestyle medal with this generous boy, and a couple of years later, I earned my silver medal and silver freestyle bar! We had ups (like winning numerous championships), and we had a lot of downs (being eliminated for rearing was his biggest faux pas), but he was forgiving of my mistakes and always greeted me with that low-throated rumble of his, ready to start a new day. Plato En Rouge was never going to be on the cover of national magazines, but he was my amazing champion, teacher, and best friend. I had always assumed that one day far in the future he would retire. I imagined taking him out to graze, his muzzle a bit grayer each year, as he’d listen to me reminisce about our adventures together. Alas, it was not meant to be. Plato was lost to us in February, and his departure has left such a huge hole in our lives. I miss that beautiful face of his every day.

Treasurers’ and Finance Report – February, 2017: Operating Acct. - $37,796.90; Debit Card Acct. - $8,624.88; Pantano CD - $11,439.27; Cash - $1,945.00. Reserve account short of goal to cover any catastrophic losses by $12,079.55 (goal = $90,000.00). MOTION: Kathy Smith moved to approve the Treasurer’s and Finance Report as presented. MOTION: The Show Committee moved to approve the payment of all incurred fixed show expenses and then divide up the remaining balance of show entry fees received, to be refunded to competitors in an equitable way proposed by the show committee. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried. 7. Schooling Shows (2nd VP) – Next show is April 1 at Bar A Ranch, Jenny Cohn to judge. Standing Committee Reports: 8. MOTION: Sue Leutwyler moved that the ADA approve a $20/ month subscription budget for the Adobe InDesign Centerline production software to be available for use by the Centerline Editor. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried. The Communications Committee is excited to officially announce Krystal Cottrell as the new ADA Webmaster and Marji McFadden as the new Centerline Editor. We are still, however, searching for a database manager who can handle the ADA Scores Compiling DBs which are used for tracking State Championship qualifying and ADA Year End Awards. Please contact scores@azdressage.org if you are interested. 10. Education Committee – Sarah Lindsten is working on the credit applications for the USDF University Credit and L Program acceptance. Rider applications will be completed next Monday, March 20th. Venues are being researched. MOTION: Michell Combs moved to publish promotional material for the ADA partnered dressage events. Partnership will involve offering reduced/discounted fees to ADA members. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried. 11. Equipment – One tent, a calculator and an additional folding table were purchased. 12. Futurity Committee – Three futurity nominations have been received so far. 13. Volunteer Committee – The 2017 volunteer hours have been updated. 14. 15. Vendor Committee – The Vendor Contract for the Spring Celebration show has been updated and will be sent to the vendor list shortly. One new vendor inquiry. 16. Awards Committee – Turf Paradise will host the Year End Awards banquet. Perpetual award trophy discussion. Volunteer hours discussed. NEW BUSINESS: 17. USDF Convention. Tabled

USDF Youth Outreach Clinics The Youth Outreach Clinics program is a new educational opportunity for our "grass roots" youth riders, and is held in conjunction with the USDF Jr/YR Clinic Series. There will be three Youth Outreach Clinics offered in 2017. The goal of this program is to introduce those USDF youth members who are dedicated dressage riders, but who have not yet entered the realm of FEI level competition or currently do not have an FEI level horse, to the USDF "youth pipeline" and the opportunities it offers. Each of these clinics will be held over two days, and will include a variety of instruction. On the first day, the participants in the Youth Outreach Clinic will observe the Jr/YR Clinic riding sessions, sitting together as a group as their clinician leads the discussion for each session. They will also join the riders of the Jr/YR Clinic during Saturday lunch and on Saturday evening, where they can participate in the lecture and interactive discussion with the clinician of the Jr/YR Clinic. On the second day, each Youth Outreach Clinic participant will ride in a 45-minute session with their clinician. Interested riders must submit an online application; 8-10 riders will be selected to participate. Riders must be 10-21 years of age, and must be able to complete a Training Level test. Ditch the Itch: Saving Your Horse's Skin by Kentucky Equine Research Staff (Source: equinews.com • March 23, 2017)
Few horses are immune to the occasional itch, but some horses are prone to severe itching and subsequent scratching.
Multiple strategies are necessary, including decreasing exposure to trigger factors, managing the environment, and committing to long-term management.
Major causes of itch include gnats, flies, and biting midges, also known as Culicoides. Some horses are allergic to bites and have an extreme reaction. Unfortunately, it is not possible to completely get rid of flying pests. Therefore, avoidance techniques and environmental management are important. Certain plants, as well as dust and mold particles from bedding and hay, potentially stick to and irritate the skin, especially if the horse gets sweaty. Removing offending plants, wetting hay, or altering bedding can help minimize irritants. Tools for the fight. Shade and physical barriers are essential for skin protection. Lightweight, light-colored fly sheets and masks are useful, but they should be kept reasonably clean. Dirt will attract more insects, and the combination of sweat and dirt can irritate sensitive skin. Commercial-grade fans will help minimize pests in stabling areas. Rinse a sweaty horse with water but avoid harsh detergents, which can remove the natural oils that provide a barrier of protection. Instead, use a mild shampoo for sensitive skin. A veterinarian should be able to suggest an appropriate shampoo for sensitive horses. Bug sprays have varying levels of effectiveness. Active ingredients in a spray should make up at least 2% of the total ingredients, so be sure to check labels. Water-based sprays are preferential to oil-based, the latter potentially creating an impervious barrier that can heat skin and aggravate itching. Keep an eye on your horse for any adverse reaction to bug repellents. Supplements, medication, and allergy shots. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in EO•3, have anti-inflammatory properties and are potentially helpful for easing inflammation associated with itch and allergy. Although unlikely to cure the problem, omega-3s are a helpful part of sound nutritional support. A veterinarian will determine if medication is warranted to help break the itch cycle, or if allergy testing would be useful. Although allergy testing is not yet an exact science, it can be a valuable tool for treatment. Allergy treatment is individualized, and essentially “retrains” the immune system to reduce reactions to itchy stimuli, which takes time. Shots can take up to a year for maximum effectiveness, and even up to two years in severe cases, so patience is required. In conclusion, there is no one answer to solving the problem of the itchy horse.
