The 2016 Adequan USDF/FEI Level Trainers Conference By Teri Rich
First of all I would like to thank Arizona Dressage Association for granting me the ADA Scholarship for Open Riders last year and for allowing me to use it to attend the West Coast FEI Trainers Conference recently. I was very excited to attend and learn from Stephen Clark, one of my favorite FEI judges, also joined with comments by five star judge, Lilo Fore. The rider lineup looked very promising, having several of California’s top FEI riders and Arizona’s own Cyndi Jackson riding her dressage prospect, Sir Amour! The facility at El Sueno Equestrian Center was a great venue choice and the weather turned out to be perfect for the event. On day one, Stephen Clark watched and commented on each rider’s warmup. Then, he had each rider perform the tests appropriate for the level of the horse so he could score and evaluate them with us. It was interesting to hear the marks he gave each horse and the reasons behind them. His first big statement that he wanted to get across was that if a horse is to reach his full potential, he has to be trained without limits. There can be no compromising in the training. It begins with REACTION. The horse needs to react immediately when asked. Most movements are made by the responsiveness to the aids. You don’t manufacture a horse, you create things with REACTION.

With the young horses he looked for 3 clear gaits and then asked himself, “Would I want to ride or train this horse for the next 5 years? Yes or No?” He wanted to see if the horse could “ride” itself, meaning, is the horse going well enough that the rider can just sit there, not constantly nagging at the horse? Is there a forward desire, impulsion by itself? Is the horse “proud” within its own energy? Is there correct “natural” training, not forced? He wanted to already see adjustable gaits in the young horses and straightness into the connection, especially into the outside rein. When he discussed the horse’s walk, he cautioned not to try and hurry the walk, as it will actually inhibit the ground cover and over track. Instead the rider Continued on Page 11

REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE It’s almost time for the USDF Spring Executive Board meeting, being held in Lexington, Kentucky this year. We have quite a few things on our plate for the upcoming meeting and it’s always an interesting weekend getting together with dedicated volunteers from across our country to help work on the future of our sport. We will be discussing the US Dressage Finals, approving the 2017 Regional Championship bids, reviewing lots of our educational programs and oh so much more. It’s a very intense weekend, but very informative and productive. There are many educational events around our Region so if you’re not spending a weekend with family or showing, consider supporting one of our well-organized and great educational opportunities sponsored by the local GMOs (Group Member Organizations) such as Arizona Dressage, Big Sky Equestrian Association, Heart Mountain, Rocky Mountain Dressage and so forth. As of May 17th, our potential candidates for the 2016 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships will be finalized. As I write this in early April, we have 9 declared Juniors and 1 declared Young Rider. I hope we have enough folks to field two full teams in Colorado as Region 5 is once again hosting the Championships. We will at least have a great team of Juniors! It’s the experience of a lifetime for our Youth and if you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@ comcast.net or 970-420-0877 or Kathy Gillespie, our fundraising coordinator, at kjpagillespie@msn.com or 303-921-5253. These young adults work very hard, as do their parents, trainers and friends and every little bit of support is greatly appreciated. MIGUEL UNDABARRENA NOW TAKING NEW CLIENTS AT EL SAMARITANO EQUESTRIAN CENTER We are happy to announce Miguel Undabarrena is now at El Samaritano in Scottsdale, AZ.
We are very privileged to have Miguel Undabarrena on-site. He has Olympic training experience in dressage, under the tutelage of Gary Rockwell. He is also a “Working Equitation” champion and has been successfully competing and instructing in this new popular sport. Miguel is an accomplished rider and trainer of horses. Miguel specializes in green horses, problem horses, stallions, showing, parades, and exhibitions. His talents include training horses for working equitation, dressage, Alta Escuela, and the Garocha. He has experience working with all breeds of horses. Miguel is also specialized in Iberian horses including training, selling and breeding Andalusians and Lusitanos for Dressage, Alta-Escuela, Working Equitation and Exhibitions. Some shows are asking for the proof with your entry information, so this may help you to have it a bit more organized. If you don’t vaccinate, there are requirements you must follow in order to be on the show grounds. If you have news you’d like to share, please let me know, we’re happy to get it out and about for you.

THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:00 P.M. 1. Directors Present: Kathy Smith, Cindy Hitchcock, Sarah Lindsten, Sue Leutwyler, Pam Polydoros, Heather Bilodeau, Carol Elias, Tania Radda. 2. Fundraising Committee – MOTION: Pam Polydoros moved that the Fundraising Committee be authorized to implement all or any portion of the recommended Sponsor/Advertiser fees for any ADA-hosted recognized show. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried. 13. Volunteer Committee – Heather Bilodeau submitted a 2016 volunteer hours’ list to the Board. 14. Vendor Committee – There were seven vendors at the Spring Celebration show. One was promotional only. 15. Education Committee – Due to the Olympics this year, the ADA is unable to secure a Big Name Trainer for 2016. Sarah Lindsten is working on some dates for BNT trainers in 2017. Two upcoming clinics: Gaited Horse Clinic for Arizona Judges L Program Graduates and Candidates on May 1, 2016. Ride with the Judge Clinic – Janet Foy – dates being researched. 16. Rules Committee – Betty Drake and Sue Leutwyler are continuing to do work on this committee. 17. Communications Committee – MOTION: Sue Leutwyler moved that ADA change its web host to a more secure server, without a price increase. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried.

2016 Adequan USDF/FEI Level Trainers Conference (cont) needs to make sure that the horse is honestly marching forward to the bridle and front of your leg. When Stephen talked about the canter, he said every REACTION in the canter is like a flying change. In your upward and downward transitions, if the reaction is not positive, then it will affect your flying changes. The horse has to be 100% in front of the aids or the horse cannot take the balance on the hind leg. Stephen helped several flying change problems simply by addressing the REACTION to the leg. He stressed to keep testing the REACTION of the horse every few strides, changing gears within the gaits as well. It is all about what the horse does and the REACTION in the first stride, not the third or fourth. When working on the canter pirouettes, Stephen says you can only make the pirouette as small as the collection. One horse had to learn to sit down and turn at the same time. Stephen used a lot of turning one stride at a time, then going forward, going into and out of the turn in shoulder fore. He also used the same exercise at the walk to help the horse understand the movement better and how to move his shoulders. When judging the trot, Stephen talked about the importance of keeping the same tempo in collected, medium and extended trots. The same tick-tock timing in your head. With one talented horse, the rider asked of the many trots the horse had available to her, which should she pick? Stephen answered that horses like this with lots of natural suppleness and airtime, you pick the
trot that you can keep the same tempo with in all of your movements. As Stephen went up through the horses and levels, he asked, does the horse have a future in the way he is going? Can it develop to its full potential? He said that every rider when they start out should have the intention of doing the Grand Prix and not put limits on themselves. He was very positive about riding towards a future. Stephen wanted to see the relaxation of the back and the power of the each movement. He stressed that within the contact he wanted to see softness but not an emptiness. The horse needs a contact to move into and have communication. He also warned that a big loop in the curb rein is a dead giveaway that the horse is not accepting the curb. Stephen also addressed that when a horse is tight on one side in the connection, you have 2 options. You can get rid of it by breaking the horse off that contact, but the horse will just be behind the bit. Or, you can make the horse step into the opposite hollow side (empty side) and move the horse’s body and shoulders up into that rein. This will balance the horse better in both reins and better from behind. He said with cadence comes suspension, if the horse is flat, it needs activity. He again reminded us that you need energy + REACTION without speed. When addressing transitions, Stephen told some riders not to “prepare to death” for a movement. It results in a slower reaction from the horse. The rider needs to surprise the horse occasionally with a quick aid and see if the horse is listening. Then, is there is no REACTION, the rider needs to send the horse forward with a forward MAY 2016 | THE CENTERLINE | 11
2016 Adequan USDF/FEI Level Trainers Conference (cont) hand. The horse’s reward for the RESPONSE is the relaxation of the rider. On day two, Stephen again went through the warmup with each horse. He had his checklist of things when starting: • Is there a clear and honest reaction and acceptance of the aids? • Is there lightness and suppleness? • Is there no limit or resistance in lateral bending? • Is there no compromise? • Is the horse active enough, i.e., I don’t need my leg? • Is the horse balanced enough, i.e, I don’t need my hand? • And his #1, is the horse honestly in front of the leg? ... REACTION? • He wants to be able to say, “I sit here and you do it“, to the horse.

Stephen worked more on some of the lateral movements with the horses. He claimed he was still fond of some of the old school movements such as turn on the forehand to loosen up a tight side. With the lateral movements he said he wouldn’t school forward with bend, (shoulder in and haunches in), without having forward and straight, (leg yield), first. He said to never mind a mistake as long as it was a forward mistake. Then, always after preforming a sideways movement, follow up with a forward movement, like lengthen or medium. In the medium trot, if you come into and out of it in a little shoulder fore it will keep the horse sharper behind by engaging the inside hind leg. Stephen worked several horses on improving the half passes by incorporating shoulder in to half pass, thinking travers on the diagonal, back to shoulder in and then forward again. Stephen stressed in every corner we should be riding a little extra collection. Then also a little extra collection BEFORE each exercise so we can ride forward IN the exercise. This was shown to improve several horse’s flying changes and pirouettes. If the horse was properly collected before the movement, then the movement could be ridden much more forward and freer. Overall, it was a great symposium and they had a marvelous turnout of people. We were all discussing whether there would be a return on the west coast again and hoping it would happen. I would highly recommend attending! Now, FEI trainers can also bring a plus one with their attendance, a student or lower level person. A great opportunity for anyone! They had a fun reception by Dressage Extensions in the evening and panel discussions at lunch each day. It is a nice way to discuss things with your friends and peers. And did you get the theme of the symposium???REACTION!

Understanding the Purpose By Michell Combs
of Training, First and Second Level
February 20-21, Central Arizona Riding Academy’s Dori Vlatten-Schmitz, hosted Session B of the USDF’s L Program. It’s exciting to be able to audit a great program so close to home. Dori’s handout Dressage Made E-Z explains that the L Program is designed to provide trainers, instructors, competitors and spectators insight into the evaluation techniques of judging dressage. The weekend’s instruction was provided by Joan Darnell. Joan lives in Central Texas and is a USEF “S” Dressage Judge, USDF “L” Program Faculty Member, USDF Freestyle Committee Member, an FEI 3* Para-Equestrian Dressage Judge, and has her USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. A major portion of the training was centered on learning and understanding in great detail the purpose of Training, First and Second levels. It’s important to know what criteria is needed in order to evaluate the horse, rider and test movements at each level. Each purpose is outlined below: TRAINING LEVEL. To confirm that the horse is supple and moves freely forward in a clear and steady rhythm, accepting contact with the bit. FIRST LEVEL. To confirm that the horse, in addition to the requirements of Training Level, has developed the thrust to achieve improved balance and throughness and to maintain a more consistent contact with the bit. SECOND LEVEL. To confirm that the horse, having achieved the thrust required in First Level, now accepts more weight on the hindquarters (collection); moves with an uphill tendency, especially in the medium paces; and is reliably on the bit. A greater degree of straightness, bending, suppleness, throughness, balance and self- carriage is required than at First Level. Joan explained what every word or phrase meant in the purpose of the level. The group learned and discussed what “accepting contact with the bit” meant versus “maintaining consistent contact with the bit” versus “is reliably on the bit”. For example, accepting the bit, according to Joan, meant the horse was seeking the contact. Joan wanted to be sure the overall test evaluation as shown through the judge’s comments and scores explained whether the horse’s 16 | THE CENTERLINE | MAY 2016
training was going in the right direction. Joan says “Dressage is training”. Saturday and Sunday morning started with a lecture, followed by discussion to further develop the understanding and ability of the participants to provide appropriate comments and scores. Each afternoon, the group could apply that knowledge to the brave and wonderful live demonstration horse and riders. The participants evaluated all the movements in training, first and second levels, and learned how to take the “words”, such as obedient, not horrible, steady, not enough, active, needs more, cadenced, lacks, willing, etc. and provide a number to it. In addition to discussions on how to handle errors or disobedience within a test, the group also learned what to do when something goes wrong and the judge has to give an insufficient score with numbers such as 4, 3, 2, and 1. Joan said it’s quite rare in the United States to give a score of zero. Joan also made sure the participants didn’t fixate on a particular element in the movement directives so that the most important part is overlooked. For example, she told the group that in the free walk, the quality of the walk is more important than the stretch. Joan also explained what was considered criteria versus essence in a movement. According to the L Program reading materials:
Criteria – the standard against which figure or movement is judged. Essence - the most important part of the figure or movement. Differentiating between the two isn’t always easy, and it comes up for discussion in the USEF dressage judge clinics and forums as well. It was a fun and educational weekend for us all. Thanks to Dori and her volunteers for hosting and taking care of us during the L Program. Special thanks to the demonstration horse and riders for their time and assistance in helping us all learn and grow.

Northern Arizona Chapter Arizona Dressage Association 2016 Schooling Show Rules These Schooling Shows are put on by Northern Arizona Chapter of Arizona Dressage Association (NAC of ADA) for the benefit of its members and the community. Show policies are set by NAC of ADA and are subject to the Show Management’s discretion. The Show Management reserves the right to call for the removal from the show grounds of any horse or rider that jeopardizes the safety of any horse, rider, spectator or other attending party, or of any horse deemed unmanageable and/or a danger to itself or others. Awards will be distributed at last show of season on October 2, 2016 at the NAC of ADA ‘High Point’ Year End Championship Schooling Show. No qualifying scores are required. US Equestrian Dressage Division Regulations are followed with the exception of dress requirements. Exceptions are: Jackets are not required. If a jacket is not worn, a short or long sleeve shirt with a collar is required; stock tie or choker is optional; tall boots or paddock boots, with or without chaps, are required. Effective March 1, 2011, for dressage: Anyone mounted on a horse must wear protective headgear except those riders age 18 and over while on horses that are competing only in FEI levels and tests at the Prix St. Georges level and above (including FEI Young Rider Tests, the USEF Developing Prix St. Georges Test and the USEF Brentina Cup Test). Protective headgear is defined as a riding helmet which meets or exceeds ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards for equestrian use and carries the SEI tag. The headgear and harness must be secured and properly fitted. Any rider violating this rule at any time must immediately be prohibited from further riding until such headgear is properly in place. This includes non-competing riders as well as those competing at any level.
Riders are advised that equipment may be checked, including whip length and bits. No entry fees will be refunded unless cancellations are received by the closing date for that show. At management’s discretion, if a horse/rider combination is scratched due to severe lameness, illness or other serious reason after the closing date, the entry fee may be held over to the next show. If not used at the next show, the entry fee will be dead and not refunded. If a show is “oversubscribed”, all riders will be included based on entry post mark date, up to closing date. If there are over entries, priority will be given to ADA members.

Lilo Fore Says “Be Positive Judges" at the USEF Dressage Judge’s Clinic

A great Arizona crew, including Dori Vlatten-Schmitz, Uli Schmitz, Lois Whittington and I, along with around 16 other participants, attended the USEF’s Dressage Judge’s Clinic at the LA Equestrian Center in Burbank, California, February 27-28. Lilo Fore, who instructed the clinic, is from Santa Rosa, California, and is a USEF “S” Judge, FEI “I” Judge and Sporthorse Breed Judge. Lilo is chair of the USDF Instructor-Trainer Certification Program and she is involved in many educational programs for Dressage. Over the course of the weekend, we learned, group judged and individual judged though Grand Prix. Although many participants in the group were not credentialed to judge above 2nd level (“L”, “r”) or 4th level (“R”), it was a treat to be able to evaluate many exciting classes at the CDI portion of the show, especially the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle tests. Lois and I commented that we regularly judge above 2nd level at schooling shows and so we benefited from the higher test level education. Lilo’s message to the participants: Always be able to say something positive. In fact, she had us judge whole tests only verbalizing the positive things we observed. One horse in particular was a challenge because he was extremely tense and very naughty throughout the test. However, we noticed the tactful rider and that the horse stayed in the ring and mostly made it from one letter to another. Lilo said we still needed to see the positive within what we want to see improved, i.e. “some degree of bend, but tight in topline” or “some cadence, but hind legs should match front”. Many judges are clued in to the performance through visual indicators. Lilo’s examples included: • Check if the power is going out the front door or the back door • If self-carriage is not established, contact will suffer • What is in front of the saddle should match what is behind the saddle • If the shoulder-in has too much angle, the horse can’t sit Lilo’s talent is undeniable. She’d mention a training issue that she observed during a test evaluation and told us what likely mistake would happen because of it. She was right-on all the Guenter Seidel on Zero Gravity time. She asked us not to look just at a mistake. If a mistake happened, she said we need to be careful not to judge ONLY the mistake with our score and comment. She explained, for example, “In tempi changes, a mis-count is less of a mistake than a late change”. One should score mistakes in basics more severely and score mistakes in timing less severely. She asked us not to punish a mistake severely if it was not the result of bad training. Lilo also wanted us to take the “risk-factor” into consideration. She said, “Don’t punish too severely if a horse and rider take risks. If the effort was there, (+), if there is no extra effort (–)”. Judges have to be willing to go as much up in a score as we are willing to go down. Starting at first level, she asked 28 | THE CENTERLINE | MAY 2016
us to mention the use of corners and geometry as training tools. She said that she regularly writes on tests “allow geometry to help your training”. Lilo made sure we had different ways to word a problematic theme. Otherwise, she said, the person reading the test will get bored. She suggested using a mix of words like: needs, add, and achieve more. Lilo said that the judge has to know what we want to see. She said, “You have to have your standard. Set your standard so you’ll be fair to all riders”. She also adamantly believes that the judging standard is based on the horse’s training. She said every rider is a trainer. “Think ‘can the horse go on and get better’?” She reiterated that judges should say something nice in the comment. She said, “Make sure the rider feels good about what they did well and know what needs improvement. Was the criteria met? If not, what happened? Was the quality there? If not, what happened”? The clinic provided helpful and educational information. Through Lilo’s expertise as a judge and instructor, we felt as comfortable as possible learning and growing. All of us had opinions; many of us asked questions; and those that did the individual judging did a good job and learned some things to improve! The scope of rides, from the Open show to the CDI show, which included Zero Gravity ridden by Gunter Seidel, made the evaluations interesting and inspiring. The participant dinner Saturday night, which was also attended by Arizona trainer and USEF “S” dressage judge Beverly Rogers, was fantastic, giving us more opportunity to learn from each other, from Lilo and to socialize.

Barn Tip: Calculating Water Needs for Arizona Summers Here is how to calculate how much water you should drink a day for good health during our Arizona summers. Your weight: The first step to knowing how much water to drink everyday is to know your weight. The amount of water a person should drink varies on their weight, which makes sense because the more someone weighs the more water they need to drink. A two hundred pound man and 100 pound woman require different amounts of water every day. Multiply by 2/3: Next you want to multiple your weight by 2/3 (or 67%) to determine how much water to drink daily. For example, if you weighed 175 pounds you would multiple that by 2/3 and learn you should be drinking about 117 ounces of water every day. Activity Level: Finally you will want to adjust that number based on how often you work out, since you are expelling water when you sweat. You should add 12 ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes that you work out. So if you work out for 45 minutes daily, you would add 18 ounces of water to your daily intake. To make it a littler easier to calculate how much water to drink everyday, here are the recommended amounts for a range of weights. Remember to adjust for your activity level.

Tips for Reaching Your Daily Water Goals So now that you know how much water you should be drinking everyday, let’s talk about how to make sure you actually get enough. Drinking over 100 ounces of water may seem impossible at first, but with these easy tips you can reach your goal in no time. * Drink 2 cups (16 oz) of water before every meal: Science has proven that drinking 2 cups of water before every meal helps you to eat less during meal time and lose weight. If you do this three times daily - at breakfast, lunch, and dinner - you have already consumed 48 ounces of water. * Morning and Night: Get into the habit of drinking one glass (16 oz) of water when you wake up and another 8 oz 30 | THE CENTERLINE | MAY 2016
glass before you go to sleep every night. This will add another 24 ounces of water to your daily intake. The easiest way to do this is to keep a glass or container of water at your bedside, that way as soon as you wake up and start your day, you can begin drinking water. * Keep Track By Your Container: One thing that has proven to help people consumer enough water daily is to buy a special container for their water, like this one or this one, and set a goal of how many times they will fill an finish the container. For example, if you buy a 16 oz container and need to drink 80 ounces of water a day, your goal would be to drink 5 of those daily. Need to drink more water? Try a larger container. * Infuse Your Water With Flavor: Water doesn’t have to be boring and infusing your water with fruit, herbs, and other flavors can make it much easier to reach your daily goal. Try adding cucumber, strawberries, lemons, limes, and fresh herbs to create flavorful water. This fruit infusion water pitcher is a great way to always have great tasting water on hand. * Bubbles: Consider carbonated and sparkling water in addition to regular water. Many people find that adding sparkling water and 0 calorie flavored water makes drinking water throughout the day more fun. Find yourself drinking lots of expensive sparkling water?
