You are receiving this magazine because you have made a generous donation to support the mission of the UA Parent & Family Association which provides outreach to parents and supports student success at UA. I want to thank you for your support! In addition, we send a complimentary copy of this magazine to parents and family members of incoming freshman and to current members of the freshman class thanks to a generous grant from the Freshman Fee Committee. I also want to thank our Corporate Sponsor, Don Francisco Coffee for their continued support! The spring semester is such a fun-filled time at the University of Arizona. As I write this the excitement of March Madness is in the air. Congratulations to the Men’s Basketball Team, who advanced to the Elite 8. This April will see the return of Spring Fling to the UA Campus for its 40th Anniversary (see page 35) as well as the debut of UA’s first team of women’s sand volleyball (see page 27) as an NCAA sport at UA. The 150th Commencement of the University is just around the corner and is sure to be a spectacular send off for our seniors and Graduate Students. I want to officially welcome the parent and family members of our new Wildcats who will be joining us this fall. We know that parent support is an important part of what helps students successfully transition from high school to college and Parent & Family Programs will be a resource for you and your student. Professor & Alumnus Lauretta Leads UA-NASA Collaboration

Dr. Lauretta presenting at TEDxTucson By Cari Tusing, PFA Graduate Assistant Dante Lauretta has been a professor in the University of Arizona’s Department of Planetary Sciences since 2001, but his Wildcat story begins much earlier. Dr. Lauretta first came to the UA in Fall 1988 as an incoming freshman majoring in Theoretical Mathematics. When I asked him to share one of his memories as an undergraduate, Dr. Lauretta replied, “I have so many great memories of my time at UA. I made sure to not only take courses related to my science degree but also [to] take some time to learn about new and off-beat topics. One of my favorite classes was Backpacking — where we went hiking every weekend and spent time exploring the great national forests around Tucson.” Lauretta took an extra year at the UA to additionally major in Physics and Japanese while he was exploring his career opportunities. When I asked how his experience at the UA influenced his career path, he said, “The NASA Undergraduate Research Space Grant program inspired me. I got a chance to work on a real NASA project as an undergraduate at UA. This work defined my entire career path.” Lauretta advises students who are interested in fields like science,

technology, engineering, and math to “get involved in a research project early. Find a professor or a research group that is working on something you are interested in and find a way to join the team. Volunteer if necessary – most professors and researchers reward initiative.” Lauretta is the principal investigator of OSIRIS-REx, the biggest NASA mission the UA has ever taken on with a whopping budget of just under $1 billion. The mission is funded by NASA, and the UA was awarded an unprecedented $189 million for its role in the project. As UA Regents Professor Michael Drake observed, “This is enormous to the UA,” bringing “enormous opportunities for students to get involved. Most people don’t realize that undergraduates get to work on these missions, and they get paid for it.” In fact, Dr. Lauretta has over 50 students working with him on OSIRISREx, helping with such diverse aspects such as writing system engineering, software development, business management, graphic art, scientific studies and representing the mission at public events. Dr. Lauretta explained the mission goals: “OSIRIS-REx will visit the nearEarth asteroid Bennu – map it to

understand its geology and composition, obtain a sample from its surface, and return it to Earth for scientific analysis.

We hope to learn about the earliest stages of Solar System history as well as understand the likelihood of Bennu impacting the Earth someday.” This type of carbon-rich asteroid has never been visited by a spacecraft before, and the mission will bring new knowledge from the earliest remnants from the formation of the solar system. In addition to his long-term commitment to the OSIRIS-REx mission, Dr. Lauretta is an active professor at the UA. He expressed what he enjoys about teaching undergraduates: “I love the energy that I get from motivated and intelligent students. I am a strong believer in the power of education to inspire the next generation of leaders. I look at my job as being a provider of opportunities to students. Not all take it — but when I see a student really take off because of something that I helped with — it is a great feeling.” When I asked Lauretta for advice to offer undergraduate parents, he shared his insights as a fellow parent: “Try [to] find the right balance between helping your child find the right path and letting them explore on their own. I am a parent of two young boys so I can only imagine what it is like to have a child in college. However, I am always trying to give them just enough guidance to figure out their own path. I expect that the same will be true when

they are college-bound.” If you would like to follow the fascinating progress on the asteroid mission, Dr. Lauretta has shared a number of outlets. These resources include suicide prevention trainings, media campaigns to encourage help-seeking, and outreach events to promote counseling services and mental health issues. The UA recognizes mental health promotion and suicide prevention as an important need among students. According to the 2013 annual Health and Wellness Survey conducted by the Campus Health Service, half of UA undergraduates said they had experienced more than average, or tremendous stress in the past school year. The survey

also found that 23% of undergraduates reported that anxiety or depression made it somewhat diﬃcult to do their work, study, go to class, or get along with people. “This is a special distinction for the UA that underscores our commitment to these important issues,” says David Salafsky, Director of HPPS, of the JedCampus Seal. “We see this as another way we can keep the conversation going on how we can continue to support the mental health of our students,” Salafsky adds. NEW WILDCATS New Student Orientation

What Can You Expect? By Stefanie Basij, Assistant Director, Enrollment Services Welcome to the Wildcat family! The next few months will be very busy planning with your student and their upcoming transition to the University of Arizona and key to that process is New Student Orientation. New Student Orientation is the time when your son or daughter will get their first chance to connect with the UA community as a student. They will meet with their academic advisor, talk with current students, check in with campus resources, and walk away ready for the first day of class. In short, orientation is the time at which your student outlines their path to becoming a Wildcat for Life. There are a lot of things to do in order to be ready for your student’s New Student Orientation program, and you may be thinking: We need to put a list together to make sure we don’t miss anything! Know that UA has you covered with the Next Steps Center (nextsteps.arizona. edu). The Next Steps Center is where your student will go to pay their enrollment fee and register for an orientation program. Additionally, the Next Steps Center is the means by which your student can complete the necessary academic procedures to be ready for orientation. It is imperative that students complete their Math, Second Language, and Writing placement before attending their orientation program, and the only way to do so is via Next Steps. All students should complete placement requirements at least seven business days prior to their Orientation session. Course registration is dependent on completion of the placement processes. The Math placement exam is just that, an exam that students take online in their Next Steps Center. There are two tests that students can take based on their math experience: Algebra or Calculus. Students should read all instructions and should dedicate three hours to testing. If your student has prior college level credit or is expecting to complete an AP exam, this information will be accounted for in your

student’s placement. Students who do not complete their math placement will not be placed into a Math class or courses related to math placement such as Science and Statistics. In order to fulfill the placement requirement for Second Language and Writing, students need to click on the corresponding checklist items and answer questions to determine if they need to take an exam. It is recommended that all students test in the Second Language they took while in high school even if your student is thinking about taking a different language at the UA. This checklist item will also ask students about prior credit and anticipated AP exams. Many students will fulfill

the Writing placement without needing to test. Students need to complete the item by providing information about dual enrollment and transfer credit. If an exam is needed for placement your student will be prompted to do so within the checklist. Please make sure your student checks in on their Next Steps Center on a regular basis so they are prepared to attend orientation. Again, welcome to the Wildcat family. A New & Improved UA Tradition! By Lauren Maxwell Family Weekend began in the mid1980s as Parents Day and was renamed to Family Weekend to incorporate a larger group of people. Family Weekend is a yearly tradition that incorporates academics, athletics and family values. Though the tradition of the weekend remains constant,

the theme and events change yearly. In the past, themes have included Under the Big Top and Rodeo. Each year we take a survey of participants and try to improve on what is being offered for students and their families. This coming Family Weekend October 10-12 will be the biggest one yet. Portland, Oregon Summer Send-Off By Jill Hall For more than 13 years, the University of Arizona Alumni Association and the Parents & Family Association have partnered to celebrate the UA’s incoming freshman class by hosting Summer Send-off celebrations across the country. National alumni chapters and current UA parents host send-offs to welcome incoming UA students. The send-offs also have the mission of educating students about the transition to college and help to create the feeling that these students are a part of the Wildcat Family, and now, Wildcats for Life! These events are also a chance to educate parents and family members about campus resources including the Parents & Family Association and the Alumni Association. Hosted by alumni, friends and parents

of the UA, summer send-offs begin in early July with a culmination send-off in Phoenix. Incoming freshmen get the chance to meet other incoming students attending the university from their area and ask current students, staff, and alumni questions about life at the UA. Parents also connect with alumni and staff members for questions and answers. In 2013, more than 24 national alumni chapters and UA parents hosted summer send-off events. A comprehensive lineup also is scheduled for 2014. NEW WILDCATS Family Weekend: A New and Improved UA Tradition! Continued from page 14 Family Weekend team, consisting of four students, is working hard to improve on the past weekend experiences and make an impact on both students and parents. These changes will affect not only the family experience but also student clubs and committee experience. This coming year will offer many opportunities for clubs and organizations to participate in and fundraise, whether it be selling unique foods at Wildcat World Fair or providing entertainment at one of the many other events. The Family Weekend team is hoping to get a larger population of students involved and really show families what their students are capable of. Another change the University is very excited about is the revamp of the carnival. In 2014 the carnival section will become a mini Spring Fling, bringing fun and interactive activities that not only children but also students and families can enjoy. This event will be more interactive and mature so that it is a main focal point of the weekend and provide families with good-hearted fun, without having to pay to go to the fair. The University of Arizona wants to give families an event that will allow them to visit their students, some who may soon be headed off to future graduate schooling in another state or country, as well as students who have just spent their first three months living away from home. Those who attend Family Weekend 2014 will have a unique experience at the University, being able to both see how a student lives, and also learn some of the Wildcat traditions that make us such an amazing institution. Recently, this wonderful Wildcat family became even more involved in the University of Arizona by establishing an endowed scholarship. This generous gift was prompted by personal adversity and was created to alleviate similar barriers to current and future University of Arizona students. The BC Harley Family Endowed Scholarship grew out of a dream to honor the life of Brock Christopher Harley, a young boy who battled illness in his first year of life and left the world too soon. In addition to remembering Brock Christopher Harley, the scholarship was established to acknowledge the brave and courageous members of the extended

UA’s First Sand Volleyball Team

Wildcats Bring the Beach to the Desert By Ryan Dunn It is not often you find siblings at the same school together, let alone on the same team together! For twins Madison and McKenna Witt, however, they get the best of both worlds as members of the inaugural University of Arizona sand volleyball team. The Witt twins were two of the first recruits to sign with Arizona’s newest sport, which was announced on January 15, 2013. The Arizona Department of Athletics announced that the “beach was coming to the desert” as sand volleyball was going to be the school’s 20th NCAA sport, with competition beginning in Spring 2014. The sport was the first added by the University of Arizona since women’s indoor track and field team in 1998. Madison and McKenna, from Glendale, Ariz. and Mountain Ridge High School, had plans to play indoor volleyball at another school before the unexpected opportunity came up at the U of A. As soon as they visited campus, they knew it was the place for them. “We just loved the coaches, the atmosphere and the girls on the team,” Madison Witt said of their initial visit to the U of A. “They say you get a good feeling when you come to the right school and we definitely got that here. And we still love it.” After more than a year of planning,

scheduling, recruiting and building a facility, Arizona is prepared for its inaugural season this upcoming March. In addition to announcing the new sport last January, the U of A also announced that longtime indoor volleyball assistant coach Steve Walker would lead the new sand program. Sand volleyball rules state that the team may consist of indoor volleyball players but scholarship sand players are not allowed to play indoor volleyball. With that in mind, Walker scoured the west coast looking for sand-only players that would fit. With just a few months to recruit, Walker signed his initial recruiting class last April. A group of four pledged to play for Arizona: three high school seniors and one junior college transfer. The twins were members of the initial class along with Sarah Seiber and junior college standout Allie Cook. The four sand-only players were able to take part in individual drills during the fall in preparation for the spring season, while the other players had a successful season with Arizona’s indoor volleyball team. The twins were able to get some valuable experience during the fall session. “Fall training was tough for us since we just started playing the sand game,” Madison said. “The coaches had a lot of patience with us. They literally built us from the ground up. They taught us all of

our fundamentals and we basically just started over. There were just three of us so we were getting a lot of reps at practice.” The team trained at the Tucson Racquet Club during the fall while the new on-campus facility was under construction. Meanwhile, the Arizona Sand Volleyball Courts were completed at the end of 2013, and it has sure been a wonderful addition to campus. “At first, driving to the Tucson Racquet Club with the team was a good bonding experience, but now we are so spoiled with this new facility,” McKenna said. “The sand here is just phenomenal. It is literally just a hidden paradise.” The team held its first full squad practice at the new facility on Jan. 16. Although they are only freshmen, the Witt twins have some advantages over many members of the team. Along with the advantage of an entire fall of sand training, the Witts have been playing together their entire lives. “We have really improved a lot,” Madison said. “We will go home and I’ll tell McKenna, ‘You did this good today or you need to improve on this.’ We strategize together, and we tell each other what we did wrong. I don’t want my sister to be better than me, but I know she doesn’t want me to be better than her. I think it is a huge Continued on page 29

Shugrue (Eller Accounting and MIS ’14) participated in the competition last year as well. He said that experience gave his team an edge. “I learned a lot from the experience and knew what the judges would be expecting,” he said. “What really set us apart, though, was our ability to think outside the box and go beyond the recommendations that were given to us.” He said the competition has been the

highlight of his Eller experience so far. “What we accomplished is something you dream about,” Shugrue said. “This whole competition was voluntary, so when you work hard and see this type of results, it feels pretty good. “Our whole team appreciates everything Eller does though; we know this would not have been possible without the great faculty working within Eller.” Faculty advisor Joe Fonte assisted the team in its win. “We’re proud of Drew, Spencer, Derek, and Ryan,” said Len Jessup, Dean of the Eller College. “Eller Wildcats are indeed the very best in the country, whether on the sports field

or court, or in the classroom or boardroom.” More than 2,200 students from 43 colleges and universities participated in the annual PricewaterhouseCoopers accounting case competition. In addition to providing an opportunity to test presentation skills in a real-world setting, the competition offers the chance to learn more about high-level accounting policy issues and compete for cash prizes at the local and national levels. The UA winning team was awarded $10,000, plus an additional $10,000 to allocate to DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that supports public school teachers and their students.

Spring Fling Returns to Campus … Continued from page 35 miles north of campus to Rillito Downs. Despite the move, Spring Fling remains a Tucson staple and has solidified its place as a UA tradition. More than 25,000 annual attendees still enjoy food, rides, and fun, and the event holds the distinction of being the largest student-run carnival in the nation. But it just wasn’t the same as the halcyon days on campus. “It’s going to be something that many people have not seen – even those who have worked here for the past 20 years. It’s going to be magical,” Young says. The Spring Fling 40th Anniversary Committee is responsible for much of that magic and bringing history back to

life. Alumni are invited to partake in a weekend full of events, and the committee is asking attendees past and present to send photos, stories, and memories of past years to sfanniversary@email. arizona.edu Since the beginning, Spring Fling was designed to support the 500+ campus clubs and organizations which are part of ASUA. For many of the participants this is their biggest fundraising event of the year. “This is how they fund their programming, scholarships, events, and so much more,” says Young. The event goes beyond money, however. Volunteers and club members gain invaluable hands-on experience in

event planning, project management, budgeting, and philanthropy. In 2013 Spring Fling donated more than 4,000 lbs. of food to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and 1,515 books to the Reading Seed. The importance of Spring Fling shines throughout campus and Tucson. The money raised goes right back to campus and local non-profits. Plus, who doesn’t love food, games, and rides? Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs (CHSA) contributes to shaping a safe and inclusive campus environment that embraces students’ cultural identity and support students’ success as learners, leaders and citizens.

Asian Pacific American Student Affaris (APASA) remains dedicated to cooperatively developing and maintaining an inclusive environment that fosters a sense of belonging and an appreciation for the diversity, not only among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, but also within the entire University community.

Native American Student Affairs (NASA) provides culturally sensitive academic counseling and support services to American Indian/Alaskan Native students enabling them to achieve academic excellence. We nurture student success by encouraging all students to proactively explore and shape our diverse campus community.

The mission of African American Student Affairs (AASA) is to facilitate a support system that helps students achieve academic excellence and an enriching African American cultural experience. AASA provides opportunities for students to learn more about leadership, social justice and creating community.

The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) offers a space to hang out, free resources (condoms! tampons! pregnancy tests!), two internships for academic credit - The Men’s Project and FORCE (your feminist group on campus), as well as weekly events where you can discuss hot topics, watch cool films, get free food, and find a community of friends! – wrc.arizona.edu or SUMC 4th Level

The Common Ground Alliance (CGA) is a collaborative effort of The UA Cultural Centers, LGBTQ Affairs, the Women’s Resource Center, and the Disability Resource Center to provide a comprehensive approach to helping students increase their multicultural awareness and their ability to address social justice inequalities.

PFA El Tour de Tucson Team Battles Weather to Bear Down! By Lee O’Rourke Congratulations to our first Parents & Family Association El Tour De Tucson Cycling Team. Our team was a mighty team that endured freezing rain and blustery winds! The team’s goal was to have fun and raise money for the PFA Grant Program, and thanks to their efforts we raised $1555. Of our nine team members, four were able to complete the race.
