New football uniforms incite excitement amongst players as season opener is around the corner BY JAMES KELLEY The Daily Wildcat
For the second year in a row , Arizona football will be wearing new uniforms. The Wildcats will still have the same basic design and number font as 2013, but this season, the gradient design will be limited to the sleeves on their home jerseys instead of the numbers and sleeves. The white jerseys retain the gradient numbers. The Wildcats boast four helmets, three jerseys and three pairs of pants. “We have a decent amount of combos,” senior safety Jared Tevis said. The other difference this year is that the number on the Arizona
jersey being sold to fans is No. 14 , to represent the 2014 season, rather than the number of a star player, like Jake Fischer’s No. 33 last year. Last season, the Wildcats were most successful in their red helmet, but not by much. The Wildcats wore their copper helmets twice, going 1-1. They wore blue helmets three times, going 2-1 . Arizona played four games with a white helmet, going 2-2. Finally, the Wildcats wore their red helmets four times, going 3-1. The Wildcats fared about the same no matter the jersey. They wore the blue and red jerseys three times each and the white shirt seven times. Arizona went 2-1 in blue tops,
4-3 in white jerseys and 2-1 in red shirts. Tevis said the seniors decide on which uniforms to wear each week and relay that to head coach Rich Rodriguez on Thursdays. “It’s kinda just our preference, what we feel like for that week,” Tevis said. Tevis, who is from the Tucson area, said his favorite combination is a blue or white jersey and white shorts. Arizona wore white helmets with blue or white jerseys and white or blue pants in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

Receivers now a position of strength BY brian peel

Think back to a year ago if you will. For Wildcat football fans, it was a time of transition and uncertainty. Not only was replacing NFL bound Matt Scott at quarterback going to be a challenge for head coach Rich Rodriguez, but finding someone to throw the ball to looked just as worrisome. Oh, how the times have changed for Arizona football. One year after going into the 2013 season with maybe more question marks than any other position group and lacking any notable playmakers, this year’s Wildcat receiving corps might not just be one of the best in the Pac-12 Conference, but the nation as well. “I think they’re the best,” said redshirt freshman starting quarterback Anu Solomon. “We have so many weapons and if we keep getting after it and we keep humble, it is scary what they can be.” That may sound a little biased coming from the newly anointed quarterback, but the fact of the matter is, the Wildcats’ receivers look like a devastating bunch and a nightmare matchup for any secondary in the Pac-12. At least on paper that is. The truth is, the Arizona wide receivers have a lot to prove on the field, especially those who had to sit out last season. Transfers DaVonte’ Neal and Cayleb Jones were both highly touted recruits coming out of high school, but neither has made an impact on the field at the college level. Both played one season as true freshmen back in 2012, Neal at Notre Dame and Jones at Texas, but they had to sit out the 2013 season per NCAA rules. Missing an entire season and only being able to work with the scout team, Neal is ready to live up to his lofty hype and make plays when it counts. “Last year was a year for me just to get better, a year for me to work on my craft and make sure I perfect it,” Neal said. “This year is a year for me still to work on my craft, and now that I can go out there and play, it’s a little better for me because knowing I can go out there and compete Saturdays and Fridays with my guys, it just makes it a lot better.” Likely starting besides Neal and Jones is another player hoping to prove himself after missing all of last year. Austin Hill, whom you might remember from his dominant 2012 season, is back after missing last

season with a torn ACL. “I think it’s definitely a big deal for me because it was a rough injury and it was really hard for me watching the team last year play without me,” Hill said. “It’s exciting to be back, and I’m happy the season [is] coming up really fast so I’m able to get back out there and enjoy football like I used to.” While the potential of names like Neal, Jones
and Hill lining up together is certainly an exciting prospect, last year, even without the “Big Three,” the Wildcats’ receivers made plenty of big plays. Returning from a season ago are Nate Phillips, Samajie Grant, Trey Griffey and David Richards, all of whom played important roles for Arizona at different times in 2013, with Phillips and Grant making instant impact as
true freshmen, combining for 98 catches, 1,069 yards and 8 touchdowns. This season, while the Wildcats do lose 2013 threats Terrence Miller and Garic Wharton, the combination of the Big Three and last year’s returning playmakers provide the most depth and talent Arizona has seen at the wide receiver position in quite a while. However, even with all the

hype surrounding them, Hill doesn’t look at the group as the “best in nation.” “I don’t think that really goes through our heads,” Hill said. “I don’t think we ever really came up with that ourselves, I think it was just kind of something the nation just saw … saying we’re one of the best in the nation. I think we’re just looking to be the best receiving corps that we can

Arizona lost its starting quarterback, B.J. Denker, best player ever, Ka’Deem Carey, and middle linebacker, Jake Fischer, so Rich Rodriguez’s string of bowl wins will surely end, right? Not so fast, my friend. In year three, Rich Rod has collected enough OKGs (“our kind of guys”) to not only recover from those losses, but improve on his back-toback 8-5 records. At West Virginia and Michigan, Rodriguez’s teams improved once his players took leading roles. Carey is a big loss, but the Wildcats boast one of the best receiving corps in the country to help offset that and aid the new quarterback.
Rodriguez and the UA are coming back with a vengeance in the Pac-12. Rodriguez preaches speed for his team and all eyes will be on the receiving corps. But the real question will be if the team can replace now-NFL running back Ka’Deem Carey and find an effective offense. This season, Arizona will have to play UCLA and Oregon on their respective home fields, which will be a daunting task. In the end, Arizona is a dominant team that will have to fight hard to win in a conference that just keeps standing out.

Despite key losses across both sides of the ball, year three of the Rich Rodriguez era will be the best yet. However, don’t expect the national media to feel the same way. ESPN’s projected Pac-12 preseason offensive and defensive first teams do not include a single Arizona Wildcat. Last year’s run-heavy offense is likely a thing of the past, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. A glut of receiving options gives this team a more “traditional” Arizona offense. Rodriguez will combine that lack of respect with improved depth across the board and improve upon his back-to-back 8-5 seasons. This is finally starting to look like Rich Rodriguez’s team. His recruits are finally starting to shape the team, specifically at quarterback, where I believe Anu Solomon will have a successful rookie campaign for the Wildcats. Solomon was a big winner in high school and I expect him to bring that winning edge to the team. He certainly has the weapons surrounding him at receiver and the offensive line is experienced and talented. A veteran group of defensive backs should set the tone defensively and the team will get more pressure on the opposing QB than it has in the past. Scheduling-wise, the Wildcats avoid Stanford and Oregon State and if they can pull out toss-up games at home versus USC and Washington,, record-wise, this could be one of the best teams in UA history. “It takes a village to raise a child” is an old proverb, and it looks like it will take a committee to replace Ka’Deem Carey. Seven months after Carey left school early for the NFL Draft, he still looms large over his hometown team. “He was one of the best in the country and not only was he a good player, he was so durable,” UA head coach Rich Rodriguez said about Carey. “I mean he’d carry it 40 times a game and run it just as hard on his 40th carry as his first carry and then he’d be able to go the next week, too.” Carey owns or shares 26 school records, including career rushing yards, singleseason rushing yards, touchdowns, single game rushing yards and most carries in one game with 48. “We’ll do it by committee, we won’t have one guy get 1,900 yards rushing, but we have some talent there,” Rodriguez said. The coaches said they are impressed with the current crop of running backs. “I love the way the guys are working,” said Calvin Magee, associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach. “They focus and they concentrate, and they try to improve every day and that’s all you can ask for.” The Wildcats also lost Carey’s backup, running back Daniel Jenkins, who ran for 411 yards and quarterback B.J. Denker, who ran for 949 yards. Redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon said there is more pressure on the quarterbacks to produce with Carey gone. “Of course, we lost pretty much our running offense but with the receiving corps we have,” Solomon said. “That just kinda replaces that and the young running backs we have, they can be better but they could be as good as Ka’Deem as well.” Carey scored 20 touchdowns and
rushed for 1,885 yards in 2013, despite missing the season opener against FCS opponent NAU. “It’s gonna be very hard,” said freshman running back Jonathan Haden about replacing Carey. “He was one of the best running backs in the nation last year so hopefully, collectively as a group, we can find one person, or two people or three that can get the job done.” Fifth-year senior Terris Jones-Grigsby is listed as the starter at running back for the UNLV game, with fifth-year senior Adonis Smith and freshman Nick Wilson behind him on the depth chart. “We know we got big shoes to fill in for Ka’Deem and we’re all ready to take on that role,” Jones-Grigsby said. “We take it day by day.” Jones-Grigsby is the brother of former UA star Nic Grigsby, who played at Arizona from 2007 to 2010 and rushed for 2,957 yards, averaging 5.2 yards a carry. “Terris is solid, Terris just does everything solid,” Magee said. “He’s a good example for the young kids that are watching him.” Rodriguez said Haden will play as a freshman and, in addition to tailback, has seen time at slot receiver. Three of Haden’s brothers played FBS college football and his sibling Joe Haden is an All-Pro cornerback for the Cleveland Browns. Magee said the freshmen running backs like Wilson and Haden have impressed him. “That’s been very exciting to watch,” Magee said. “They’re learning pretty quick and making some plays so it’s exciting to see.” Wilson said that they are all pushing and learning from each other. “Me and Jonathan were talking the other day and he was saying he’s the real shifty, agile guy, and I’m kind of like the fast, one-cut power guy,” Wilson said. “He said we could really complement each other and I really think that’s true.”
Jared Baker is the only returning running back with a carry last year, rushing 27 times for 130 yards. Baker returned nine kickoffs for 210 yards and his long of 34 tied for the team high, but tore his ACL on a kick return at ASU. “I’m very pleased with Baker,” Magee said. “I’m very pleased with his efforts and he looks really sharp doing what he’s doing and he’s a veteran. He knows the offense.” Jones-Grigsby and redshirt freshman Zach Green said they learned a lot from Carey. “Ka’Deem’s a really strong runner and he doesn’t go down on the first hit,” Green said. “All I did last year was sit back and watch him play and just try to mimic him as much as I can on the field.” Wilson said he would have appreciated getting to learn from Carey. “Personally, I kind of wanted Ka’Deem to stay so I could learn under his wing a little bit because our running styles are very similar,” Wilson said. Haden said the backs help each other learn the offense “because we just want the best player to play.” “We spend so much time in the film room, because we love the game so much we just want to learn, to do our best out there,” Haden said. “So like we stay after meetings to watch film and stuff and just learn the offense, so that we know that we’re doing the right thing and we can do 100 percent.” Maybe working together, the 2014 running backs can fill the void left by Carey, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the No. 117 overall pick. “We don’t have a Ka’Deem,” Rodriguez said, “which everybody knows, but we got a lot of bodies there, and I think we’re going to be good.”

New playoff system better for everyone BY JAMES KELLEY The Daily Wildcat

fter 145 years, playoffs have finally come to major college football, and it’s an ideal system. Instead of the mistake-prone Bowl Championship Series, the national champion will be crowned by a four-team tournament. “At first, I was thinking, ‘If it’s not broke, why do we got to have a playoff?’” Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez said. “But now, it’s in place … and seeing what’s going to happen with the four teams, I think it’s pretty exciting. I think it’s good for college football.” The four teams will be picked by a selection committee, the proper way to pick the teams. After years of blunders by the BCS computers, college football’s decision makers have ended their blind trust of computer rankings. Those on the committee will use strength of schedule as a tool to make the decisions, rather than letting tools make the decision for them. Arizona’s not likely to make the playoffs, but if it does, the committee would recognize a win at UTSA as solid, since the Roadrunners have 37 seniors and return 21 starters. A computer would just dismiss UTSA as a Conference USA. Also, the playoff won’t rely on imperfect rankings. The Coaches Poll is fatally flawed. The coaches are too busy coaching to watch the other teams’ games, and the AP Top 25 Poll has too many eastern writers. Pac-12 Conference games are often on too late for people on the east coast or are hidden on the Pac-12 Networks. The committee features members whose
jobs are to pick only the top four teams, not an unwieldy 25, and five of its 13 members have western ties. The championship game will also be played at different sites, which are bid on. It won’t just be played at the same four stadiums like the BCS. The first one will be at AT&T Stadium in North Texas and the third will be at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., two places that were locked out of the BCS monopoly. The playoff also added the Cotton and Peach bowls to its major postseason game lineup. Before the playoff, the BCS was limited to just the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange Bowls. The new major bowls will host two semifinal games, rotating, and on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, there will be triple-headers of good games. Finally, the playoff features an ideal number: four. If the playoff was eight, 16 or some other multiple-of-eight teams, it would be too many. “You got to put the breaks on, too,” Rodriguez said. “Say we’ll go to eight, we’ll go to 16 — I don’t know about all that. I like where we’re at right now.” One of the great things about college football is that every game counts. The playoff would only feature the elite teams, teams that deserve a shot at the national championship. But there are four teams in play now instead of two, so a team like the 2013 Alabama squad doesn’t get punished for one crazy play. This season is a turning point in the history of college football, so hang on tight.

2014-15 UA football positional grades On Monday, Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez named redshirt freshman Anu Solomon the starting QB for the Friday season opener against UNLV. Solomon redshirted last season and will see his first game action as a Wildcat against UNLV. “I’m confident that Anu will play well, and he’ll be the start as long as he plays well enough to win,” Rodriguez said. Solomon has been praised as a composed, in-the-pocket quarterback by coaches and teammates alike. His ability to remain unfazed, no matter what or who has been thrown at him, has garnered praise from several of his teammates. “He has a lot of capability; he can hurt you with his arm or his legs,” redshirt senior safety Jared Tevis said. “Most importantly, he’s pretty consistent … and the best attribute he carries is

composure. I think that’ll be big come game time.” In addition to seeing his first game action against UNLV, Solomon will be the first freshman to start at QB since Willie Tuitama in 2005. Redshirt senior Jesse Scroggins III was one of the three players Solomon beat out for the starting job and figures to be the backup QB. Scroggins, a junior college transfer who also played at USC, has a cannon arm and was one of the frontrunners for the starting gig. His ability to make a variety of throws greatly helped his case. Add in his athleticism and he has the natural ability to be a starting quarterback for a Division 1 football program. However, he lacks the accuracy to put his receivers in a favorable spot to safely catch his passes consistently. Despite his
lack of accuracy, you could do a lot worse than Scroggins as the backup QB. Redshirt junior Jerrard Randall and redshirt sophomore Connor Brewer both have starting quarterback traits (Randall’s dualthreat ability and Brewer’s accuracy), but they both failed to capitalize on their chances to start. Both received first-team reps throughout spring and fall camp. There will have to be injuries or poor performances above them for either to see consistent game action this season.

It is impossible to replace a star of his status with just one player, and Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez is too smart to attempt to do so. A committee of running backs will likely split carries as they attempt to account for all the production lost from the departure of Carey and QB B.J. Denker, who was second on the team with 1,074 rushing yards last season. Leading the committee this year is redshirt senior Terris Jones-Grigsby. Add those players to the returning cast led by sophomores Samajie Grant and Nate Phillips and the Wildcats have one of the premier wide receiver groups in the conference. Specifically, Hill’s return will make life easier for the quarterbacks on the roster. Hill tore his ACL before last season and missed the entire season as he recovered. Prior to his injury, Hill caught 81 passes for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2012. Having that kind of production return to the lineup will make the Wildcats that much more dangerous. Joining Hill this season is the transfer duo of Neal and Jones. Neal, who transferred from Notre Dame, and Jones, who transferred from Texas, are projected starters and add two different receiving styles to the team.

There have been talented individual pass rushers, but there hasn’t been one team that was dominant at getting to the quarterback. Returning this season is redshirt senior Dan Pettinato, who was injured at the beginning of the season and fell down the depth chart. However, a strong spring has moved him atop the defensive tackle depth chart. Unfortunately for Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez, he likely won’t have a dominant pass rush this season. There’s no

pulled away from the younger running backs with his knowledge of the playbook and multifaceted running style. To begin the season, he will likely get the majority of rushing attempts and the biggest opportunity to make plays. Among the backups who figure to get playing time include: true freshman Nick Wilson, redshirt junior Jared Baker and true freshman Jonathan Haden. Each brings a different running style and should serve as change of pace backs from Jones-Grisgby. Of the trio, Wilson brings the most complete running style to the table. The four-star recruit has the natural talent to make an impact in his true freshman year.

The 5-foot-10 Neal will likely start in the slot and provide big-play ability every time he touches the ball, a la current Seattle Seahawk Percy Harvin. Jones is a bigger receiving threat (6-foot3, 215 pounds) who can catch jump balls down the field over smaller defensive backs. Returning to action is the trio of Phillips, Grant and Trey Griffey. They combined for 112 receptions for 1,239 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last season. If any positional group is significantly better than last season, it’s the wide receivers’.

doubting there is increased depth across the defensive line, but it just doesn’t seem likely to see more than the 24 sacks the defense had last season. Headlining that increased depth is the duo of LSU transfer Jordan Allen and Boise State transfer Jeff Worthy. Both had to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. The duo will provide veteran bodies who have played on successful D1 college football teams and be much better rotational players than Arizona defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel has had in his two previous years in the program. Casteel said he plans on rotating plays based on how many snaps the coaching staff feels it can play per game. “What we’re trying to do is find out how many optimal reps can such and such get at will linebacker, a five technique or whatever it may be,” Casteel said. “Some guys are going to be able to do their best at maybe 45-50 snaps a game, and another kid may be a 20-25 snaps a game guy.” Having more able bodies will allow Casteel to have more fresh bodies than he’s ever had at Arizona.

Throughout fall camp, Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez has maintained faith in his projected starters but expressed concern about his depth. If someone like Baucus was to get injured, reserves like T.D. Gross or Lene Maiava would be forced into action. Gross and Maiava aren’t horrible options but the drop-off from starters to reserves is significant and could lead to problems. As long as the offensive line stays healthy, Arizona will have a successful year on the offensive side of the ball.

Having such an experienced line will drastically help redshirt freshman starting quarterback Anu Solomon get acclimated to the college game. It doesn’t hurt either having 80 percent of the line back from last year’s team that averaged 264.9 rushing yards per game.

However, Fischer and Flowers, the top-two tacklers, both graduated and need to be replaced. Their combined 192 tackles accounted for just under 70 percent of the total tackles made by starting linebackers last season. Replacing that kind of production will not be easy and likely will not happen.
Filling those starting spots is DeAndre’ Miller and Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea, and between them there are a lot of unknowns. The duo needs to perform from the onset or there will be changes made rather quickly. The lone mainstay from last year’s starters is Scooby Wright III. The 6-foot-1 linebacker is tied with safety Jared Tevis for the most total tackles amongst returning players (83) and will be a focal point of the defense as a whole. Wright III played last season as a true freshman and impressed coaches and fans alike. He was named a freshman All-American by 247sports.com. If he can help the other linebackers progress, this unit will be considerably better as the season progresses than it currently is.

Cornerbacks at Arizona have consistently revolved over the past couple years, and there will be yet another new starter this season. Jarvis McCall Jr. is slotted to start and should provide considerable height alongside Jonathan McKnight.
McKnight, who started all 13 games last season, will fill a similar role as last season’s No. 1 cornerback Shaquille Richardson. Behind McCall Jr. and McKnight, there is a unique mixture of upperclassmen and underclassmen that could see playing time if the starters underperform. Among those looking for playing time are Cameron Denson, Devin Holiday and Patrick Glover. All three are talented enough to play but need to earn their snaps. On the other hand, all three starting safeties are back from last season, but Tra’Mayne Bondurant will start the year on the bench due to disciplinary reasons. Bondurant started 12 games last season at safety and was among team leaders with 72 total tackles.
Replacing Bondurant is junior Will Parks, who joins Jared Tevis and Jourdon Grandon as the three starting safeties. In defensive coordinator’s Jeff Casteel’s 3-3-5 defensive formation, having the extra safety helps guard against the spread offenses in the Pac-12 Conference. The Tevis and Grandon duo is among the best in the conference, and its versatility provides Casteel with plenty of options in regard to pass coverage and run support. This season, safety will be one of the few positions of strength on the defensive side of the ball.

Lackluster kickers have plagued Arizona fans for the better part of the past decade. Last year’s starting kicker, Jake Smith, went only 12-19 on his field goals and
prototypical punt return and will improve the return game. Punter Drew Riggleman showed consistency with his 40.1 punting average over 56 punts last season. He is not an All-American, but he is more than capable at handling the punting duties and will do so again this season. As a whole, special teams this year should be better than last season, but the difference won’t be significant enough to turn heads.
was actually a decent kicker by Arizona standards. Returning kicks haven’t been much better either, as Arizona averaged 20.5 yards per return and did not score a touchdown. The longest kick return last season was an unspectacular 34 yards by Jared Baker. Punt returns followed much of the same path as kick returns, as unspectacular plays were the norm, and the team struggled to only 7.2 yards per punt return. However, that should not be the case this season, as the shifty DaVonte’ Neal is slotted to return punt returns. Neal, who transferred from Notre Dame, is a

Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez has a message for UA students: pace yourselves. Football games at Arizona are more than just the action between the opening kick off and the end of the fourth quarter. While the ZonaZoo is first-come first-serve, causing students to camp out to get the best seats, Rodriguez said he doesn’t want them to wear themselves out. “We get there two hours before the game and they’re already in there, packed, ready to go,” Rodriguez said. “The just got to pace themselves it’s a long game … over three hours long. For a 7 p.m. game, don’t start at 8 in the morning, you know? Wait till after lunch and ease your way into that, because that can be a long night.” Last year, ESPN named the ZonaZoo the best student section in the Pac-12. “We have great weather, we have a lot of night
games and the seats are fantastic,” Rodriguez said. “They’re right behind the bench; you can’t find better seats in college football for a student section … so I think the ZonaZoo has been tremendous.” There are two new additions to Arizona game days this year: the Sun Link Tucson Modern Streetcar and the CatTran shuttle. The streetcar has four stops on campus south of Speedway Boulevard. This year, the UA also added a shuttle from the Park Avenue Garage to Arizona Stadium. The shuttles run two hours before kick off and at the end of the third quarter, ending one hour after the game. The shuttles are free for fans who park in the garage, which will cost $5 per vehicle or free to carpools (vehicles of four or more). Free parking for carpools is also available in Main Gate, Highland and Tyndall Avenue Garages. Arizona football’s pregame festivities start the night before with Bear Down Fridays, a pep rally
on University Boulevard near the Main Gate. The first one will be on Thursday. On game days, there are several more events. The Coca-Cola Fan Fiesta starts three hours before kick off. The Fan Fiesta features giveaways and inflatables and is located on the mall, just west of Cherry Avenue Next at about two hours before the games is the Wildcat Walk . Fans can cheer on the football team as they are dropped off at Cherry Avenue and University Boulevard and walk to the stadium with the cheerleaders and mascots in between a tunnel of fans while the band plays. After the game, the band plays a concert at Heritage Hill near the Student Union Memorial Center and the Administration Building. It’s probably better than waiting in your car for the 50,000 other fans to leave after the game.

Rich Rodriguez enters his third year at Arizona, and his changes to the program have the Wildcats ready to improve upon back-to-back 8-5 seasons. BY JAMES KELLEY The Daily Wildcat
Just like one of his most repeated mottos, Arizona football players describe head coach Rich Rodriguez as an almost contradictory figure. Rodriguez often talks about wanting his players to be “comfortable being uncomfortable,” and they portray him as a strict players’ coach. “It’s fun,” senior receiver Austin Hill said about playing for Rodriguez. “It’s always upbeat. It can be tough at times, but his motto is, ‘You gotta be comfortable being uncomfortable.’ He definitely works us hard, but at the end of the day, he makes us better players on the field and better men off the field.” Players who run afoul of team rules, like multiple school recordholder Ka’Deem Carey in 2013 or 30-time starter and senior safety Tra’Mayne Bondurant in 2014, must work their way back onto Rodriguez’s teams. “He’s a high-caliber, demanding but loving ‘taking care of his players’ coach,” senior quarterback Jesse Scroggins III said. “We know he cares about us, and that’s why we follow his rules.” Arizona went 8-5 with bowl wins in Rodriguez’s first two seasons. The UA had only been to 16 bowl games before Rodriguez came to town. Rodriguez said this is where he

facility, so this is pretty good for us.” Rodriguez resurfaced at the UA after working at CBS for a season and has made Tucson a popular destination. According to the Arizona Daily Star, Arizona is the only school that features transfers from all the power five conferences and Notre Dame and BYU. Scroggins, who started his college career at USC, said the coaches and especially Rodriguez are the reason the UA is so popular to transfers. “We see that U of A’s on the rise, and everybody wants to be a part of that, everybody wants to be a part of something great, and coach Rich Rod is doing something great. He’s putting up what I believe can be a dynasty,” said Neal, who transferred from Notre Dame. Senior safety Jared Tevis, who is from the Tucson area, said Rodriguez has had a great impact on the program and that it will pay off. “I think it’s just a matter of attitude,” Tevis said. “It’s kind of more important as I said, more important to the players and to the community. We’ll continue to try and get that going, and the discipline and accountability has increased a ton since coach Rod got here, and I think that’s gonna help us take that step to the next level.” Rodriguez inherited a program from former UA head coach Mike Stoops that lost 10 games in a row to
FBS teams in 2010 and 2011, despite featuring 12 current NFL players. Hill said the program has done “a complete 180” from Stoops and has gotten Tucson and the UA more interested in football. “He really got the community much more involved than I thought he possibly could, and he’s really gotten people interested in football,” Hill said. “Which is awesome, because more fans coming to the games, staying longer — it’s a great experience as a football player to have and to see that the community has your back.” Freshman running back Jonathan Haden said Rodriguez wants the Wildcats to be closer to each other than anyone other than their actual family. “It makes us feel like, ‘Why not Arizona?’” Haden said. An upcoming goal Rodriguez has for the program is less optimistic and also a bit of a contradiction. “We’re not to the point yet where we’re good enough to play poorly and win,” Rodriguez said. “It sounds like coach speak, but I’ll know we’ve arrived when we go out there and play bad and stink it up and still win the game.”
