ANNUAL ANNUAL REPORT REPORT 2025: 2025:

HIGHLIGHT: HIGHLIGHT: VOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL THEN & NOW THEN & NOW

Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. . .A large number of people followed. . .He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd. (Mt. 3:7-8)
I was walking in the hallway last week with Mrs. Walker (pun is coincidental). She is one of our math teachers. We were talking about the reading of the day, which is cited above. She heard a homily in which the priest focused on the line, “He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him.” Jesus’ ministry depended on the work of so many people doing things behind the scenes. These unheralded people and acts are the foundation of any successful project or organization. Preparing a boat, which seems like such a menial task, becomes part of the mission.
Our conversation caused me to think about several things: Who made the travel and lodging arrangements for Jesus and his group? Who provided food and drink? Who financed the ministry? Who held the purse (well, I think we know that).
It goes back to a tradition that is practiced regularly but is not referenced much in today’s world—sacrifice! The administration of Providence Catholic, the staff, the students, their parents, our coaches, our benefactors, the Women’s and Men’s Clubs, our Advisory Boards--sacrifice! We do a lot, much of it behind the scenes and out of the limelight, for the gospel. We respond to a call to make the world a better place by committing ourselves to the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. We provide for the Christian education of our children because we believe in God, particularly in light of the Augustinian Values. This is how we “have a boat ready” for the Lord.
In the Catholic liturgical year, that’s what you call everyday life, outside of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Most of our life is spent in “ordinary time.” With due respect for Christmas and Easter, God comes to us in ordinary time---God entered history in ordinary time, and God continues to be present to us every day.
As I page through this issue of the Celtic Review, I see how we spend our ordinary time. Scoring a perfect 36 on the ACT, hosting an Australian Augustinian school, doing mission work in another country, participating in a “Friday Flyover,” implementing several charity drives, placing in state tournaments, and holding a special needs basketball camp are only some of the ways we spend our ordinary time. Which, come to think of it, is pretty exceptional!
May God bless the Providence Family!

Providence Catholic High School is proud to announce that senior Michael Jensen earned a perfect composite score of 36 on the ACT, an achievement reached by fewer than one percent of test takers nationwide.
“Michael’s success reflects both his dedication and the culture of academic excellence at Providence Catholic,” said Principal Paul Houston. “We are incredibly proud of his accomplishment and the example he sets for our students.”
What an incredible day welcoming our future Celtics - the Class of 2030! From tackling the Placement Exam to picking up their official Celtic sweatshirt, this marked the first big step in their Providence Catholic journey. We can’t wait to see the amazing things this class will accomplish!

Coach Nissen asked the players a Question of the Week each week (you can check them out on our social). One was: If your mom was a football player, what position would she play? Some guys had thoughtful answers, some had jokes… but one thing’s true - every single mom is the MVP in their lives - as you can see in these senior/mom photoshoot!

We welcomed the boys from St. Augustine College in Sydney, Australia to Providence Catholic! They spent the afternoon shadowing our basketball players in class before hitting the court together for a series of exhibition games. This was an awesome exchange of culture, friendship, and Augustinian heritage.

The Band and Choir Christmas Concert filled the assembly with music, joy, and unmistakable Celtic spirit. After a year of performing at competitions, school events, and athletic contests, these talented students were celebrated for their dedication and the energy they bring to the Providence Catholic community.

What followed was more than a live broadcast - it was a celebration of faith, excellence, and the many ways our students rise to the occasion.
Before the sun rose on September 26th, the Providence Catholic campus was already buzzing. Long before most of Chicagoland hit snooze, our Celtics were wide awake - ready to shine on Friday Flyover with ABC7 News Chicago and beloved host Val Warner.

At 4:30 a.m., as the campus lights flickered on and cameras rolled into place, Providence Catholic students began arriving - smiling, energized, and ready to represent. From academics to athletics, faith to fine arts, the Friday Flyover broadcast gave the Chicagoland area a front-row seat to what makes Providence Catholic extraordinary.
Viewers were introduced to our seven-time regional champion Math Team, proving that championship banners don’t only hang in gyms. Our Robotics and Engines students highlighted hands-on learning in action, showcasing innovation, problem-solving, and real-world application. The spotlight also shined on our INCubatoredu entrepreneurial program, where students are learning to think boldly, pitch confidently, and turn ideas into action.
Faith and tradition were front and center as well. Our sacristans offered a glimpse into the spiritual life of the school, while the Marching Celtics and choir filled the air with sound, spirit, and unmistakable Celtic pride. Representing student leadership, our Student Council President spoke with confidence and heart about the Providence Catholic experience.

Athletics brought the energy you’d expect - and then some. The state champion Dancing Celtics and state runner-up Cheer and Softball teams filled the morning with pride and momentum, joined by our thirdplace-in-state Volleyball team and Cross Country state qualifiers. One unforgettable moment came when Channel 7's Val Warner stepped onto the mat to wrestle our state champion wrestler, Justus Heeg - a moment that perfectly captured the fun, authenticity, and excitement of the morning.
Rounding out the broadcast were words and wisdom from Father Merkelis and Mr. Houston, grounding the morning in mission and reminding viewers that everything we do - whether in classrooms, labs, studios, or stadiums - is rooted in purpose.
As the sun finally rose over Bishop Kaffer Stadium, one thing was clear: Providence Catholic doesn’t just wake up early when the moment calls - we rise together. Friday Flyover wasn’t just a broadcast, it was a snapshot of who we are, what we value, and how our Celtics continue to lead with excellence, faith, and heart.
A special thank you goes out to Blueberry Hill Cafe and owner George Nikolopolous for providing breakfast that morning for all the students and staff!

Rooted in our Augustinian values of Truth, Unity, and Love, Providence Catholic forms students who live their faith through action. Daily prayer, all-school liturgies, retreats, and campus ministry provide opportunities to grow spiritually, while service programs inspire students to make a real impact in their communities. From local outreach to global mission work, Celtics live out their values with compassion – and discover how faith shapes a life of purpose.

When Providence Catholic senior Sydney Hultsch learned about a summer mission trip to Malawi, she knew it was the right moment. Driven by a long-standing desire to serve and supported by her family, Sydney joined the team and quickly immersed herself in meaningful work—from helping install a clean water tank with 12 access points for a local village to assisting in medical clinics that served more than 1,300 people.
More than service, the trip became a time of personal growth and perspective. Stepping far outside her comfort zone, Sydney found gratitude, joy, and connection in the people she met, carrying with her the Augustinian values of Truth, Unity and Love she learned at Providence Catholic. The experience reshaped how she views the world and reinforced the power of being “comfortable with the uncomfortable.”

The playground at St. Joseph School in Manhattan has an exciting new feature thanks to Providence Catholic senior and St. Joseph Grade School Manhattan alum Tommy Babich. As part of his Eagle Scout project—the highest and final requirement to earn the rank of Eagle Scout—Tommy designed, built, and installed a Gaga Ball pit, giving back to the grade school that helped shape him.
More than just a construction project, Tommy’s work reflects leadership, service, and community impact. The Gaga Ball pit is already a favorite among students, offering a fun, inclusive way to stay active and connect with friends—an addition that will benefit St. Joseph School for years to come.

Providence Catholic seniors Siena Adducci and Cole Hagwell recently organized a toy drive for Silver Cross Hospital to bring comfort and joy to children visiting the emergency room. Both students, longtime volunteers at the hospital, recognized that the toy supply was running low and wanted to respond to a real need within their community. Inspired by their experiences at Silver Cross and the Augustinian values emphasized at Providence Catholic, Siena and Cole saw firsthand how even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference.

Our Providence community came together for the second year to create fifty fleece blankets for children in foster care this holiday season, spreading comfort and warmth to those in need. A special thank you to That Girl + Co for providing the supplies for the blankets and the cute gnome craft for participants to take home as well. We are filled with gratitude for all who joined us for this heartwarming service project. It is truly in giving that we receive.

Students from Providence Catholic’s Augustinian Youth Ministry delivered donated items to the Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County on behalf of PCHS. Our Celtics were proud to give back to the men and women who have given so much in service to our country, honoring their sacrifice through gratitude, support, and Augustinian love.

During December, our Girls Basketball team collected items for the Care Kit Foundation. Over break, the team met up with alumna Kate Rost to donate the items and help support those in need.

Another unforgettable Super Celtics Camp is in the books! Hosted by our boys and girls basketball programs, this annual camp brings children with special needs together with Providence Catholic student-athletes for two days of personalized coaching, encouragement, and pure joy. The impact reaches far beyond the court - building confidence in our campers while allowing our athletes to serve as mentors, role models, and buddies in a truly inclusive environment. Just check out all these smiles!

Pride, purpose, and heart. Our Girls in Green lit up the night at their annual showcase - and made an even bigger impact through their coat drive.
Thanks to their generosity and leadership, all donated coats will be shared with the Suburban Service League to help those in need this winter. So proud of our cheerleaders for lifting up our community on and off the mat.

In 1995, Celtic mom and alumna Christine Curtin Lipke ’96 took the court at Illinois State University to cap off her senior volleyball season at staterepresenting Providence Catholic with the same determination, heart, and green-and-gold spirit thatdefinesaCeltic.

Last October, that story came full circle. Her daughter, sophomore Lilly Lipke, stepped onto that very same court, in the very same place, wearing the very same colors - continuing a family legacy rooted in hard work, tradition, and love for the game.
It’s a powerful reminder of what it means to be part of the Providence Catholic family: traditions passed down, memories made, and moments that connect generations. Once a Celtic, always a Celtic.
Take a look at these photos of Christine and Lillytwo athletes, two eras, one school, one court, and one enduring Celtic legacy.

I am excited to share highlights and successes from the year so far at Providence Catholic. We are proud of outstanding academic achievements by our students including five National Merit Commended Students, 50 Illinois State Scholars, and one senior with a perfect ACT score. We are continuously updating and improving our course offerings, and we have new classes starting next year including AP Business with Personal Finance, AP Human Geography, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, and Regional World Studies.
In athletics we enjoyed exciting playoff runs by girls’ volleyball finishing 3 in state and football advancing to the state championship game, along with numerous regional/sectional championships and various individuals making it to the state finals. The girls’ basketball team is having an incredible season including a packed house on Senior Night, and wrestling is showing signs of greatness with state championship potential! We look forward to post-season success for dance, cheer, basketball, and wrestling in the coming weeks.
School spirit has been a focus this year, with the resurrection of the Game Couch at athletic events, school spirit dress down days, and a repurposing of the Christmas dance to a Junior/Senior Winter Formal that was a big hit! We are having a Freshman/Sophomore TWIRP dance near Valentine’s Day, and a big surprise event for the whole school near the end of the year.
Enrollment looks promising with a positive turnout for our Placement Exam, and we are already processing registration and enrollment for the Class of 2030!

WEDNESDAYS WEDNESDAYS WEDNESDAYS
What is your current profession?
Director Of Northern Illinois University Foundation Communications
Where is your degree from and what was your major? I graduated from St. Norbert College in 1999. My major is Communications with an emphasis in Media.
Career Highlights:
I’ve been lucky to work with awesome people. I’ve worked in a university setting for over 25 years at three different institutions and I’m a huge believer in finding the right culture fit.
Tell us about your family: My wife (Julie) and I have a daughter, Kaylie, and a mini bernadoodle named Maggie.
Favorite PCHS Memories:
Being named “Worst Joke Teller” of my senior class (I still rock dad jokes for days)
Mrs. Orler’s typing class is still one of the most beneficial classes I ever took at PCHS.
Winning the 5A title against Palatine and getting my name announced on television for a tackle when I was nowhere near the play.
How did Providence give you a good base in your career and the person you are today?
I was one of a very few people from my grade school that made the trek from Orland Park to New Lenox everyday. I knew I had to work hard to meet new people and also make a name for myself socially, academically, and athletically. PCHS taught me that nothing is a given and you get exactly what you put into something.
What career advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
I’d say that you shouldn’t settle in your job search. Find the right fit for you, because it’s out there!

In November, the Providence Catholic family came together in faith and gratitude to honor a remarkable milestone - the 40th Ordination Anniversary of our beloved President, Father John Merkelis, O.S.A.
Affectionately known as Fr. Merk, he has been the heart of Providence for many years. He has guided countless students as a Pastoral Director and Kairos leader, and has celebrated more school and morning Masses than we could ever begin to count. And, he's celebrated hundreds of weddings, countless baptisms, and continues to guide generations of Celtics with his quiet strength, compassion, and steadfast devotion to Truth, Unity, and Love.
More than 300 family members, alumni, Augustinians, students, staff, and friends gathered to celebrate a man who has given so much of himself to others - a man who truly embodies the spirit of Providence Catholic.
As we continue celebrating this milestone, we invite our Celtic Family to join us in a special way - by making a gift to honor of Fr. Merk’s 40 years of priestly service. Every gift made supports Providence Catholic students in need through the Helen Merkelis Fund, named in memory of Fr. Merk’s beloved mother.
Let’s come together, in true Celtic spirit, to say thank youfor a lifetime of faith, service, and love. Congratulations again, Fr. Merkelis!

To the Providence Catholic Community:
Each time I read The Celtic Review, I am reminded that Providence Catholic High School is not simply a place of learning, it is a living expression of the Augustinian educational values of Truth, Unity, and Love. This issue offers a diverse view into a community that continues to form young people of faith, character, and purpose.
From classrooms and laboratories to stages, chapels, and athletic fields, Providence students are invited to pursue excellence in all its forms. Whether it is the intellectual discipline shown by a perfect ACT score, the creativity and courage demonstrated through INCubator and fine arts programs, or the teamwork displayed by championship-caliber athletic teams, the stories in these pages reflect a school that educates the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.
I am especially moved by the many ways Providence students live their faith through service. From local outreach efforts to global mission experiences, these young men and women are learning that faith is not something we simply profess, but something we practice. To see students step beyond comfort and convenience to serve others is a powerful testament to the Augustinian belief that our hearts are restless until they rest in God, and until they are given in love to others.
This issue also reminds us of the strength of the Providence family across generations. Alumni stories, shared traditions, and moments that connect past and present speak to a truth we Augustinians hold dear: community is built through shared memory, mutual care, and a common mission. Once a Celtic, always a Celtic.

As Prior Provincial, I am deeply grateful for the faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and benefactors who make this mission possible each day. Your commitment ensures that Providence Catholic remains a place where young people are challenged to think deeply, act justly, and love generously.
May God continue to bless the Providence Catholic community, and may St. Augustine guide you during this academic year.
In gratitude and prayer,

Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. Prior Provincial Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel

Providence Catholic High School joyfully congratulates Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. on his election as Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians, Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. Fr. Tom will serve as Provincial-elect and will be formally installed in June 2026.
We are proud to celebrate this moment with Fr. Tom and grateful for his faithful service, leadership, and commitment to the Augustinian mission. We pray that the Holy Spirit will guide and strengthen him as he prepares to take on this important role in service to the Augustinian Order and the Church.

These student leaders committed to serving the school community throughout the year by promoting school spirit, organizing service projects, planning student activities, and serving as the voice of their classmates. With dedication and faith at the center of their work, they pledged to help build a positive, unified, and spirited Celtic community.
Mrs. Zlogar’s art classes took a field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago. Students stepped outside the classroom and experienced firsthand how the techniques and concepts they had been studying came to life through the work of world-renowned artists. Nothing compared to seeing color, texture, and creativity up close.
The Providence Catholic Women’s Club hosted the Winter Formal for juniors and seniors, and it was a hit! With food trucks, a DJ, and Christmas decor at CD&Me, it was a night to remember for those in attendance!
The All-School Christmas Mass served as a beautiful reminder of what the season is truly about. With alumni returning to celebrate alongside students and staff, and the tradition of Christmas carols sung together at the end, the moment felt timeless.
The English Department got into the spirit at the annual staff Christmas party, compete with flannel and festive glasses!
The Dancing Celtics spent the day supporting an Eagle Scout’s service project, helping children entering One Family temporary housing in Lockport prior to foster placement.
Mr. Paul Houston, Principal of Providence Catholic High School, proudly recognized the school’s Students of the Month for November.
Behind every senior is a teacher who made a difference. During Teacher Appreciation Night, hockey seniors honored Mr. Ditzler, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Gaughan, Ms. Sparano, and Bro. David Relstab for the lasting impact they made both in and out of the classroom.
Providence Catholic students spent their December Day of Service at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, packing an incredible 18,360 cereal bowls for families in need.

Thank you to all our donors and volunteers.
“We need the gifts of others to make up for what is lacking in ourselves.”
St. Augustine, Commentary on the Psalms: 125,13
Providence Catholic High School is, at its heart, a community built on shared gifts.
This past year reminded us just how deeply we rely on one another. Together, we experienced moments of tremendous joy and seasons of sincere sorrow. We celebrated historic championship performances by our Dance Team, outstanding finishes by Cheerleading and Girls’ Softball, renewed energy in our Alumni Hall of Fame, and a growing digital presence that continues to connect Celtics across generations.
At the same time, we mourned the loss of beloved members of our community, honoring the lives of Fr. Rich Young, O.S.A., Sandy Arthurs, and Cathy Muehler. In moments of celebration and in moments of grief, Providence remained what it has always been: a faith-filled community, united in prayer and grounded in love.
Prayers anchored us through it all. As an Augustinian school, faith is intertwined with our education. It is woven into every classroom, every activity, and every relationship we cultivate.
This mission is made possible because of you. Your generosity strengthens the foundation of Providence Catholic. Annual Fund gifts help bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of a PCHS education, ensuring that students continue to receive an experience rooted in academic excellence, spiritual formation, and the transformative love of God. Thanks to your support, we can serve families, sustain programs, and remain faithful to our calling for generations to come.
Please know that your gifts do not go unnoticed, nor are they taken for granted. We are deeply grateful for your partnership and your trust. Most importantly, we remember you in prayer at daily Mass, during All-School Masses, and in our shared moments of reflection as a community.
Thank you for being an essential part of Providence Catholic High School and for sharing your gifts.
In Truth, Unity, & Love,
Celine (Stroup) Pierce ’17 Annual Fund Director

We couldn't have done
it without your generous support.

Elizabeth Fleming, a dedicated student and Eagle Scout, completed an Eagle Scout project that has made a meaningful impact on her local community in Minooka. Her project involved building a 110-foot boardwalk in a park that frequently floods during heavy rain, allowing residents to safely walk through the area even after storms.
Scouting has played an important role in Elizabeth’s life, helping her develop leadership skills, build lasting friendships, and embrace new adventures. Through her experiences in Scouts, she has grown both personally and as a leader—lessons she will carry with her throughout her life.
Reflecting on the project, Elizabeth shared, “The sense of community it brought made me feel so grateful for Scouts.” Working alongside her friends and fellow Scouts made the project especially meaningful. One moment stood out in particular: after the boardwalk was completed, a father and his children passed through the park with a stroller and explained that they usually had to turn around when the area flooded. That interaction helped Elizabeth realize the positive and lasting difference her project made for families in the community.

The St. Monica Campaign was an emergency fund created to cover the tuition of our EMPOWER Illinois scholarship recipients when the state suddenly cut the program, leaving our students with no way to continue payments. These listed donors stepped up to the plate to make sure we did not lose any of these deserving Celtics to the unforeseen circumstance. We are happy to report that we raised enough to cover all the students’ remaining tuition for the entirety of their Providence careers! God is good, and these donors exemplify Truth, Unity & Love in His name.

Each year, we encounter a financial gap, as tuition payments cover only 75% of our operating costs. We bridge this gap with contributions to the annual fund. Your gift can truly make a difference for our students. Thank you for your generosity, and God bless!

As we reflect on the milestones of this past year, the word that resonates most deeply within the halls of Providence Catholic is gratitude.
Success at PCHS is never a solitary achievement. It is a mosaic, a community dedicated to supporting each other. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or within our spiritual life, the "Celtic Way" thrives because of the collective investment of people who believe in our mission. We are standing on solid ground today because of the incredible gifts—of time, talent and treasure—that you have “payed forward” into this institution.
The Future is Green and Gold
We are excited to announce that Providence Catholic now has a comprehensive Strategic Plan Framework in place. This isn't just a document; it is our roadmap for the next chapter of Celtic history.
In the coming months, we will begin revealing the specifics of how PCHS plans to maintain our leadership position in Catholic education. This plan is bold and forward-thinking, designed to ensure our students are prepared for a rapidly changing world (along with our facilities.) However, while we embrace innovation and growth, our compass remains fixed. Every initiative within this plan is rooted in our Augustinian core values of Truth, Unity and Love.
“Providence has prepared me for the future by offering a caring, supporting family that challenges me intellectually and spiritually. Experiences such as Kairos as well as participating in unique clubs and academics have formed me into a well-rounded student prepared to succeed in college.”

This process required prayer, honest dialogue and deep reflection and we are profoundly grateful to everyone who participated in this process: students, staff, alumni, parents of alumni, grade school partners and benefactors. We are evolving to meet the needs of tomorrow with great intention, but we will always remain the Providence you know and love.
For you, we are grateful. Go Celtics!
A note from Steve Cardamone, Director of Institutional Advancement

The Providence Catholic High School Men’s Club and Women’s Club exists to provide a social outlet for parents and financial support to the school. Support is given through service, projects and fund-raising. The Men’s Club holds the Super Celtic Sweepstakes and a Golf Outing each year. The Women’s Club sponsors an annual auction and fashion show. Our parent clubs support capital improvements projects that benefit all students. The Men’s and Women’s Club combined provided $168,000 in funding for the CAMPAIGN OF CHAMPIONS since we announced the campaign. Over the years the clubs have been responsible for many major capitalimprovementstotheschool.

Celtic Godparent Fund
The Celtic Godparent Fund exists as a safety net for families who face unexpected tragedies like serious illness, unemployment, or the passing of a parent/guardian. We don’t want the students of these struggling families to have to sacrifice their education. So, we created this fund to keep them enrolled while their families find long-term solutions. Thank you to this year’s donors for being Celtic Godparents!

“I can confidently say that I know the material from every class and that those strong foundations have helped me make connections between different subjects. I also feel that PCHS's commitment to extracurricular activities has helped me develop my interests in math, Spanish, and music, and helped me develop strong time-management skills. Finally, my friends and teachers have supported me in deepening my passion for history, which has given me the confidence to major in it in college.”

Jaxson ‘29, Careese, Jason, & Harper

“Providence Catholic has been a great choice for our family thus far because it aligns with our faith and moral compass, and it also provides our son Jaxson an opportunity to compete at a higher level in his sports of football, basketball, and track. We have felt welcomed and love the inclusive atmosphere.”
Naseem, Fadda, Ameer ‘29, Azizeh, Sophia and Mo

“We chose Providence Catholic for our son because it offers an exceptional balance between academic excellence and athletic opportunity. The school’s rigorous academic program, dedicated teachers, and supportive learning environment have allowed him to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
In addition to strong academics, the football and wrestling programs at Providence have played a significant role in shaping his character. Through these sports, he has learned the value of teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership - qualities that extend far beyond the field and mat.
We truly feel blessed and grateful to have our son be part of such an outstanding school community. Providence Catholic not only challenges him to excel academically and athletically, but also encourages his growth as a well rounded and confident young man.”
