A commemoration of craft, creativity, and most importantly: connection to material and place. This speculative memorial is deliberately sited to be in conversation with the regional history of boat making. Formally, the memorial speaks to imagery of over ended canoe hulls, calling back to the original place name of the Montlake cut - sxWátSadweehL “carry a canoe.” And it is directly adjacent to the existing ASUW shell house where George Pocock built the iconic Husky Clipper that won the 1936 Olympic gold medal.

The space is designed to host community craft workshops and connect the shell house and waterfront to the UW campus which is currently cut o by Montlake Boulevard. These key elements are designed to connect people to maker communities, place, and the physical materials of our everyday lives – countering the perceived disposability of consumerist products.

Existing parks are designed for children and elderly the third public park in the International District (ID) addresses the need for young adults to gather and express themselves through sport, collective action, or community events.

Directly across the street from Hing Hay Park, Third Park is in part inspired by the conceptes of community capacity building and its chosen aesthetic. Third Park acts as a connection hub, facilitating community engagement and empowerment. This project reimagines the adjacent buildings to further support the community by replacing the corporate bank with a community center (none currently located in ID), and implimenting Halfway House programming at the American Hotel.
