WELCOME Welcome everyone today to Royal Windsor Racecourse for our Madness Racenight, a date that has long been marked in the calendar as a big night for the racecourse. We are really excited to be hosting a crowd in excess of 8000 people today, although I will readily admit there have been some anxious moments in recent days as to whether the racing would still be going ahead given the 5th heat wave of the summer and the very hot temperatures on yet another of our racedays. Much of the focus today is clearly on Madness performing on the Silver Ring Lawn (festival area) after racing from around 9pm tonight, a truly iconic band from the 70s & 80s and I have no doubt that Suggs and the band will put on an epic show tonight. Turning to the racing, a great duel is developing in the Flat Jockeys Championship between defending champion Oisin Murphy and 20 year old Billy Loughnane, who really sprung to prominence last year when riding 222 winners in a calendar year, the most for a jockey in this country since the turn of the century. As things stand at the time of writing, Billy holds a lead of 14 winners over Oisin (96 v 82), helped by Billy riding two winners here at Windsor on Monday evening. Oisin may lead the Royal Windsor Racecourse Winning Jockey table, but expect that gap to narrow this evening as Billy has a ride in all six races here at Windsor whilst Oisin has chosen to head to Salisbury where he has five rides today. Off the track, we are truly thrilled to have a new raceday sponsor on-board today in the shape of sports betting exchange, Matchbook. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed.
