We received over 156 entries from St Peters First School, Picknalls First School, Bramshall Meadows First School, St Josephs’ Catholic Primary School and Talbot First School.
We are delighted to welcome you to the Racecourse for our first Family Fun Day of 2026, we have some fantastic Racing scheduled for you alongside some exciting entertainment. Located in the Centre Course enclosure we have Bouncy Castles, Cap’n Catt, Bo’Sun Brains and Scurvy Ship with a pirate show, Mermaid Story Telling, Seashell Workshops and fun fair There is something for all the family
Today we host the Clarke Chase at 16:02 for the Sir Stanley & Lady Clarke Challenge Trophy. This race is in its 10th year and is a fitting tribute to the former owners of Uttoxeter Racecourse & Northern Racing A local businessman who was an avid Racing Fan and Racehorse owner, he modernised the site whilst retaining the original character of the Racecourse, helping it to become what it is today.
It would be remiss not to mention one of our key partners, Wrights Pies who are here today celebrating their landmark 100-year anniversary Partnered with Dougie Mac & Macmillan Cancer Support they have a full year of community engagement and events planned which can be found on their website or social media channels. MEMORIES OF SIR STANLEY AND LADY CLARKE
Today is the 10th Running of this race that was created to be run in the memory of Sir Stanley and Lady Clarke. When Sir Stanley died the family supported a Class 4 Beginners Chase in his memory which was hardly befitting for the man who in 1988 took charge of the racecourse and started turning it into what it is today, as he set out to deliver ‘the Finest Country Racecourse in the Land’.
When Lady Clarke died in 2015, it was agreed that their joint memory should be celebrated annually with a ‘proper race’, hence, with the support of the Clarke family, this valuable open handicap chase over 2 1/2 miles was created as an early feature of the Summer Jumping programme. Sir Stanley was a great advocate of Summer Jumping as it provided a perfect opportunity for many locals to come racing here outside the football season – Stoke and Derby were more in their prime in the early 1990s.
Sir Stanley was a well-known self-made local businessman and racing enthusiast who was excited by the opportunity to take over the Uttoxeter Racecourse lease from East Staffordshire Borough Council. He invested in the racecourse, building a new grandstand, improving the facilities for racegoers, trainers, jockeys and horses. Whilst modernising, he was keen to preserve the charm and character by retaining some of the timber clad buildings, which we still have around the parade ring today. One plan that he had on the ‘drawing-board’, when he died, was to move the Weighing Room over to the Paddock Pavilion so more adjacent to the Parade Ring. This will now happen for the 2027 running of the Midlands Grand National.
A stickler for standards he had a sharp eye for detail, whether it be cutting the grass, making sure all was clean and tidy, improving signage, repainting and repairing buildings, racecourse staff meetings and greeting of customers properly and providing real customer service.This is still the ethos that the team try to live by today.
From Uttoxeter, Sir Stanley developed Northern Racing operating 10 Racecourses which are now all part of the ARC Group. The Clarkes not only took pride in their Racecourses but also their Racehorse’s with ‘Lord Gyllene’ winning the 1997 Grand National, the trophy for which he is carrying in the picture here.
As they say, behind every good man is a good woman and Lady Clarke was just that. A great foil to her dynamic husband, she was caring and supportive. She loved Uttoxeter Racecourse and her horses which she both owned and bred. The Clarkes valued all owners and, today, owners get the chance to watch their races from the box that was Lady Clarke’s.
With this being a landmark running of this race, all at Uttoxeter Racecourse thank the Clarke Family not only for helping to create but also sponsoring this race, and indeed the initial race 10 years previously (only special sponsors manage such longevity!), along with the memory and legacy that their father and mother have left behind.
