Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Good chance of being placed. Can be given little or no chance. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
OF F ICI A L BH A R AT I NG S E X PL A I N E D The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

SAFETY
In the interests of public safety all visitors to the racecourse must follow the directions of the Safety Stewards on the Stands and the Raceday Staff throughout the racecourse. Please do not leave bags or your possessions unattended at any time as this could cause a security alert. Please be aware that horses can be unpredictable, therefore care and attention is necessary within the vicinity of the horses. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL DRINK AND/OR GLASSES BE ALLOWED ON TO GRANDSTANDS, VIEWING AREAS IN FRONT OF GRANDSTANDS OR AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE PARADE RING. SMOKING
Smoking is not permitted inside any buildings but is permitted in all outdoor areas, this includes the use of all electronic cigarettes that omit vapour.
VETERINARY CARE
Horse welfare is a priority at Southwell. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
