VETERINARY CARE
Horse welfare is a priority at Southwell. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Good chance of being placed. Can be given little or no chance. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
OF F ICI A L BH A R AT I NG S E X PL A I N E D The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

DIAMOND ROSE trained by J S Smith, Tirley, 112 miles. RACE SUMMARY
A combination of the switch to fences, new headgear and more positive tactics enabled STEADY THE SHIP to get his career back on track when seeing off Diamond Rose and five others over C&D last time. This 6lb higher mark should be manageable, particularly with improvement possibile. Capricia probably would’ve won had she not exited at the third-last at Leicester and Martin Keighley’s charge is next on the list ahead of Ar Mest. 1-2-3: 1.STEADY THE SHIP (IRE) 2.CAPRICIA (IRE) 3.AR MEST (FR) KEY colours

AD DM MISS SION ION
NATIONAL LURCHER & RACING CLUB The NL&RC has been established for 35 years and is the oldest membership Lurcher Club in the world. Throughout this time the aim has been to promote and protect the interest and welfare of the type of dog known as the Lurcher. A lurcher is a cross-breed of dog, usually a sight-hound, such as a whippet or greyhound, with a working dog such as a collie, or terrier, having been purposely cross-bred for the pursuit and capture of edible game. What fascinates most people about lurchers is the enormous variety of dogs that fall within this category; smaller dogs such as the Whippet x Bedlington Terrier are ideal for catching rabbits whereas Collie x Greyhounds are more suited to all-round work. Prior to the hunting ban Saluki x Greyhounds (technically ‘long-dogs’) were popular for coursing hares and Deerhound crosses, perhaps obviously, for deer. ‘Gypsy dogs’ and ‘Poacher’s pot-fillers’ are common terms for this type of dog. The club has fought to bring respectability to lurcher work and lurcher people to the extent that many lurchers are now gaining acceptance within the shooting fraternity. Both the political landscape and society as a whole are vastly different to when we started in 1980, but the NL&RC continues to fight to keep the legal right to work our dogs and promotes only legal forms of hunting. The National Lurcher And Racing Club organise events which includes Simulated Coursing, Straight Racing, Hurdles and Showing at some of the largest Game Fairs in the country including Chatsworth and Holkam Hall in Norfolk. It’s survival depends on a team of hard working volunteers and this can be a challenge. The club are always seeking Sponsors and if anyone here would like to sponsor the NLRC please speak to one of the team members present tonight, or contact us through our Facebook page or website. Sponsorship is available on all levels, from individual class sponsors to show sponsors. In return, sponsors will be advertised at our shows, and on our Facebook page and website. The Club offers members a chance to be involved in running shows, racing events and working demonstrations; Members only show classes; 5 free class entries per year; a free Lurcher calendar and regular newsletters. We also have a very active Facebook page and a new website - www.nationallurcherandracingclub.co.uk Anyone interested in joining the NL&RC can do so by contacting Sam on 07539 117600; by e-mail - nlrc1@hotmail.co.uk; or via our website. .

Laura Morgan’s low-mileage 7-y-o PERCUSSION took his form up a level when an impressive scorer here last time and can make light of a 9lb weights rise with his new headgear combination again sported.
