WELCOME New Year’s Day – January 1st 2026 Happy New Year to everyone! Hope you have all enjoyed the festive break and are ready for some fantastic racing today at Royal Windsor Racecourse. We are absolutely thrilled to have Jumps Racing back here again on New Year’s Day, which was such a feature of the racing calendar up until the late 1990s. Judging by the ticket sales in recent weeks for today, it would appear there is a real appetite amongst the public to head out for a day at the races and we are really excited to see packed grandstands watching some top quality racing on display. The Christmas period was a hugely entertaining time for jumps racing with one of the most gripping King George VI races at Kempton Park on Boxing Day ever witnessed, and huge congratulations go out to trainer Ben Pauling, jockey Ben Jones and owner Harry Redknapp for the success of The Jukebox Man. The sheer joy and delight on each of their faces after the photo-finish was truly wonderful to see. The following day saw a cracking Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow with Champion jockey and Welshman, Sean Bowen, proving a hugely popular winner on board Haiti Couleurs. Today’s feature race is unquestionably Race 6 and The Fitzdares New Year’s Day Handicap Hurdle Race over 2½ miles with a prize purse of £100,000. Thanks as always go out to Fitzdares for their continued and hugely important support of both our racecourse and horse racing across both codes. I would also like to express our gratitude to race sponsors Oliver Jorg Ties and DJB Property Services for their support today and hope they will enjoy their first Windsor experience. Looking ahead to later this month, we are very excited to be holding the second edition of the Berkshire Winter Million in partnership with Ascot racecourse. Racing will be held here on Friday 16th & Sunday 18th January (with racing at Ascot on Saturday 17th) with a total prize purse across the 3 days of a massive £1.25 million. We fully expect strong fields across all our races, hospitality has limited availability left across both days but 3 day passes are still available for the competitive price of only £40, so do come and join us if you can. Back to today, we have a raft of entertainment on offer including the Bluebird Belles singers and the Household Cavalry, along with pony rides, petting animals and face-painting for the younger attendees. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suﬃcient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

HISTORY OF THE NEW YEAR’S DAY HURDLE NEW YEAR’S DAY FIRST BECAME A BANK HOLIDAY IN 1974, AND WINDSOR WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE A FIXTURE THAT DAY. ENTERPRISINGLY, NEXT YEAR THEY INTRODUCED A VALUABLE RACE, APPROPRIATELY NAMED THE NEW YEAR’S DAY HURDLE. GOOD PRIZE MONEY MEANT IT ATTRACTED A SMALL YET CLASSY FIELD. IN 1976 IT WAS WON BY THE REIGNING CHAMPION HURDLER COMEDY OF ERRORS, WHO TOOK THAT TITLE IN 1973 AND REGAINED HIS CROWN TWO YEARS LATER. HE WON 23 OF HIS 48 RACES. BEACON LIGHT, SUCCESSFUL IN THE 1978 NEW YEAR’S DAY HURDLE, WAS UNLUCKY NOT TO WIN A CHAMPION HURDLE, BUT HE WAS UP AGAINST A SET OF EXCEPTIONAL OPPONENTS WHO WERE RUNNING IN THE 1970s. THROUGH THE NEXT DECADE THE RACE WENT TO CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS LIKE CELTIC RYDE IN 1981 AND 82, WHO IN JOHN FRANCOME’S VIEW WAS THE SECOND BEST HURDLER HE EVER RODE; AND HIGH GRADE HANDICAPPERS LIKE RA NOVA, ANOTHER DUAL WINNER. CELTIC SHOT WON IT IN 1988 TWO MONTHS BEFORE TAKING THE CHAMPION HURDLE. THIS 17-TIME WINNER WENT ON TO BE A TOP CLASS CHASER . THE STATUS OF THE NEW YEAR’S DAY HURDLE FALTERED IN THE 1990s DUE TO COMPETITION FROM RACES ELSEWHERE OFFERING MORE PRIZE MONEY. IT WAS RUN FOR THE LAST TIME IN 1998, THE YEAR THAT NATIONAL HUNT RACING AT WINDSOR ENDED, APART FROM A TEMPORARY REVIVAL IN 2004-05 WHILE ASCOT RACECOURSE WAS BEING REDEVELOPED. ARENA RACING REINSTATED JUMPING HERE IN DECEMBER 2024 AND WE HAVE NOW REVIVED THE TRADITIONAL NEW YEAR’S DAY MEETING AND ITS BIG HURDLE RACE, NOW WORTH £100,000.
