WELCOME Berkshire Winter Million Welcome everyone today to Royal Windsor Racecourse for our second edition of the Berkshire Winter Million in partnership with Ascot Racecourse. We are genuinely thrilled to be hosting two days of top quality jumps racing for what are unquestionably the flagship racedays of the calendar here at Windsor. With prize money across the three days (including Ascot on Saturday) of £1.3m, racegoers are guaranteed to see plenty of thrilling action from some of jump racing’s leading horses. Following the abandonment of Warwick’s raceday last Saturday, we have added the prestigious Class One race, The Hampton Novices Steeple Chase, as race three within an eight race card on Sunday. The sixth and feature race on Friday will be The Fitzdares Sovereign Handicap Hurdle offering a sizeable prize fund of £110,000 and on Sunday it is without doubt The Fitzdares Fleur de Lys Steeple Chase, again race six, with a fantastic prize purse of £165,000. Reflecting on our raceday here on New Year’s Day, which saw the return of the fixture on the Windsor calendar for the first time since 1998, we were absolutely delighted to have over 5,500 in attendance with a really special atmosphere. The sport of horse racing clearly had a magical Christmas with either record or bumper crowds seen across the country at the likes of Kempton, Fontwell, Chepstow, Newbury, Taunton, Uttoxeter and Cheltenham. Hopefully it has laid the foundation for a really positive 2026 for racing and everyone associated with our fantastic sport. Turning our attention back to the Berkshire Winter Million, we are extremely grateful as ever to our sponsors, namely Fitzdares, who are so supportive of us throughout the year and also Weatherby’s, whose association with racing dates back more than 250 years and produce this racecard amongst many other great services to racing. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital. The gelding looked unsuited by a steady pace at Cheltenham last time and should appreciate a potentially faster gallop here.

Nab Wood has been in excellent form this season for his similarly in-form trainer Nicky Richards, the nine-yearold winning two of his three starts this term. A strong stayer, he powered home impressively when scoring at Carlisle last time and a 6lb rise may not be enough to halt him in this rich vein of form. Olly Murphy’s seven-year-old Kap Boy has done plenty of his best work in the finish of late and he appeals as one to improve for this sort of test, whilst stablemate Long Draw has been disappointing the last twice but holds strong form from last season and is more than capable of winning such a race.

Lud’or proved progressive as a novice hurdler for Tom Symonds last term and couldn’t have been more impressive on reappearance when cantering to a 27-length success on handicap debut at Bangor-On-Dee. The six-year-old backed up that form when third in a strong Newbury handicap from a 13lb higher mark and is unexposed as a stayer stepping up in trip. Emma Lavelle’s Royal Rambler finished a way back in sixth that day at Newbury and gave the form a boost when going down

Paul Nicholls’ Captain Teague makes his long-awaited return following an extended period on the sidelines, a first start since November of 2024. The talented eight-year-old reverts to hurdles for his comeback here and had previously shown a high amount of ability and potential, having finished third in the 2023 Weatherbys Champion Bumper and winning at both Grade 1 and Grade 2 level as a novice hurdler. He perhaps will just need the run but looks well-handclapped from a mark of 139.

Dan Skelton won the first renewal of this race two years ago with Nurse Susan and relies on six-year-old Tranquil Sea here, with talented conditional Harry Atkins taking the ride. A winner on his second start for his new stable at Chepstow back in October, he finished runner-up to a rapidly improving Sam Thomas horse at Market Rasen following wind surgery on his penultimate start.
