WELCOME Berkshire Winter Million Welcome everyone today to Royal Windsor Racecourse for our second edition of the Berkshire Winter Million in partnership with Ascot Racecourse. We are genuinely thrilled to be hosting two days of top quality jumps racing for what are unquestionably the flagship racedays of the calendar here at Windsor. With prize money across the three days (including Ascot on Saturday) of £1.3m, racegoers are guaranteed to see plenty of thrilling action from some of jump racing’s leading horses. Following the abandonment of Warwick’s raceday last Saturday, we have added the prestigious Class One race, The Hampton Novices Steeple Chase, as race three within an eight race card on Sunday. The sixth and feature race on Friday will be The Fitzdares Sovereign Handicap Hurdle offering a sizeable prize fund of £110,000 and on Sunday it is without doubt The Fitzdares Fleur de Lys Steeple Chase, again race six, with a fantastic prize purse of £165,000. Reflecting on our raceday here on New Year’s Day, which saw the return of the fixture on the Windsor calendar for the first time since 1998, we were absolutely delighted to have over 5,500 in attendance with a really special atmosphere. The sport of horse racing clearly had a magical Christmas with either record or bumper crowds seen across the country at the likes of Kempton, Fontwell, Chepstow, Newbury, Taunton, Uttoxeter and Cheltenham. Hopefully it has laid the foundation for a really positive 2026 for racing and everyone associated with our fantastic sport. Turning our attention back to the Berkshire Winter Million, we are extremely grateful as ever to our sponsors, namely Fitzdares, who are so supportive of us throughout the year and also Weatherby’s, whose association with racing dates back more than 250 years and produce this racecard amongst many other great services to racing. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suﬃcient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Race preview from Weatherbys We are delighted to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Hurdle at Windsor this afternoon, a two-and-a-half mile contest with a strong group of five set to go to post. The race was won last year by Nemean Lion and Kerry Lee’s nine-year-old again holds excellent claims in his bid for back-to-back victories in the lucrative contest. Last year’s event was another strong renewal as he repelled a good field, asserting command on the run-in, and he backed up that effort with a determined victory in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle from the improving Steel Ally. The Golden Horn gelding didn’t appear to stay the trip in the Stayers’ Hurdle but reappeared this season with a mighty effort in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle, beaten under two lengths in third by the reigning Champion Hurdle winner.

With that run under his belt and back up in distance to his optimum trip here, he holds a strong chance of repeating last year’s feat. The Twiston-Davies’ Potters Charm is a second-season hurdler and perhaps the one in the field open to most improvement. The seven-year-old was a Grade 1-winning novice hurdler WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW

last term, as well as a Grade 2 winner over this trip, and bids to build on that promise. A faller on return, he ran to form when third giving away weight in the Ascot Hurdle but did weaken away in the closing stages in the Long Walk last time, perhaps not staying the distance. This trip should be more suitable, and he remains with potential. Harry Fry’s Altobelli was only a couple of lengths behind that rival in the Ascot Hurdle and does reoppose here on 5lb better terms. The eight-year-old too hasn’t appeared to get home over three miles on two of his last three starts but his form in handicaps at Ascot over this trip last season reads well and grants encouragement. Dan Skelton relies on two in the field, though Tristan Durrell-ridden outsider Royal Infantry has a fair bit to find on ratings and must bounce back from a poor chasing debut last time. The mare Take No Chances is the choice of Harry Skelton and she arrives here on the back of two fine efforts in staying Grade 2 hurdles. The eight-year-old has strong form with top mares Wodhooh and Kargese, whilst also finishing third in the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and this valuable pot looks a perfect target.
