It’s hard to believe how quickly the season is flying by - we’re already nearing August and tonight marks the final fixture of July! We’re delighted to have AKA providing this evening’s entertainment on the bandstand, so do stop by and enjoy the performance.
Looking ahead to August, we have three exciting meetings to look forward to. On Monday 3rd August, we’ll be hosting our Scoops & Saddles Day - a wonderful day out for families, with plenty of activities to keep the children entertained. A little later in the month, on Saturday 15th August, we celebrate one of the standout events of our racing calendar: the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Meeting. Rounding off the month, we have back-to-back racing with our Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 31st - a fun-filled day for all ages - followed by our penultimate fixture of the season on Tuesday 1st September.

Stepping up to 10 furlongs coincided with a return to form for HARSWELL RIVER at Redcar. Beaten only a neck into second that day, her handicap mark is unchanged and with Cian Horgan removing a handy 3lb, she wouldn’t need to find much more to go one place better Baldosawas back in third and might prove to be the main threat,while Balmoral Boy is next best.

There have to be some reservations about Fractional after she was turned over at cramped odds at Chepstow, and the same can be said about the ex-Irish Flawless Fusion,who finished down the field in a Listed contest at Hamilton on her stable debut. Richard Hannon’s gelding got off the mark in a Nottingham maiden nine days ago and that form suggests that a rating of 73 should be workable on his nursery debut. Eleven Eighty Two has been knocking hard on the door and could prove to be the main threat, ahead of Harley and Empire Rising.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 60. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
