Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Jimbo Sport ran well last time out but was found wanting when 3rd in a strong Grade 2 on Boxing Day at Kempton. The drop to a Grade 4 really should suit him, having taken well to hurdles since his bumper win in May. Karma De Cotte looks to be heading in the right direction, placing 3rd here last month at 200/1 and should be involved again. The JP McManus owned Like Minded might also fancy this firmer ground and be in the mix when the medals are handed out.
13:35
Top Flight Century has been improving over hurdles since debuting last April and with his recent win at Sedgefield over the same distance, he should play a big part in this race Drop Kick also looks like a threat, improving in form since making the step up in trip, winning one and placing in the 3 other outings. Glory Hights is experienced and has been a regular at 3 miles, maybe now this shorter trip can benefit him.
14:10
A competitive handicap featuring a number of horses coming here on the back of strong performances. Stick With Me Sam scored a hat-trick on his last 3 chase appearances and should be comfortable to repeat that form now over fences. The Grafter seems to favour the course here at Newcastle, finishing 2nd and 1st on his last two visits. Always a Reason will be seeking a hat trick of his own but with his most recent form over almost 3 miles, he might run out of ground before making an impact.
14:43
The Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Eider Chase, the feature race on the card run over a gruelling 4m will take some getting. Mr Vango shoulders top weight of 12 stone making the majority of the field run off the 10 stone 2lb minimum weight. It is worth noting that last year’s 16 length winner Knockanore runs here off bottom weight. Even though he is 10 pounds out of the weights he does have regular pilot Freddie Mitchell claiming a valuable 3 pounds and brought along steadily this season with this target in mind, he is sure to run a big race
15:20
It is back down to the minimum distance for this competitive looking handicap hurdle Baratablet who was disappointing last time out when beaten rather easily (4/7Fav) would hope to do better as is clearly well thought of The one to be on here is the likely favourite Seaview Rock, the winner of a Leicester maiden hurdle last time where he won with any amount in hand. Ben Sutton keeps the ride and his 5 pound conditional allowance enhances his chances further still.
15:58
Josh The Boss takes a step down in class today and a repeat of his Boxing Day run at Aintree would see him go close Peaky Boy makes a return to the track after a long absence but is probably best watched today. My Noble Lord was a nice winner at Uttoxeter over this trip last time out, but more improvement is likely needed today. Sunnyvilla still makes plenty of appeal off a mark of 126. The 11-year-old has been running consistently well for Nicky Richards over 2 miles and has previously won over this trip so stamina should be no issue
16:33
Sattam was an impressive winner of a handicap at Musselburgh last Sunday. This is a quick turnaround and he runs carrying a 7lb penalty but still could be ahead of the handicapper She’s Notjoeking drops back in trip and although an improvement is needed from her last run, she cannot be ruled out. Justlikefire finished a close 2nd behind Soldier’s Leap in a handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter last time out. He is up 3 lbs in the weights but is lightly raced and looks to have plenty of scope
